For What It’s Worth by Dr. Melfi , Ph.D.

Does it seem to any of you that for the past several years, months, weeks, people have become less friendly, more isolated, more stressed, and much less fun, or is it just me? I remember back when I rst moved to Florida, thinking it was a 12 month a year perpetual vacation. It seemed that neighbors where constantly thinking of dinner parties, block parties, halloween parties, Christmas parties, and well, you get the idea. e Fourth of July and Labor Day always included backyard barbecues, with smells of steak and chicken on the grill lling the air. Perhaps it is the neighborhood in which I live, or maybe I’m just not being included, but to the best of my knowledge, there has been a big drop-o in socialization.

I’m not completely ignorant of what has been going on nancially. Of course money is not owing the way it was in the nineties, and it cost enough just to feed a family, much less friends and neighbors, but that brings me back to my childhood days. Money wasn’t plentiful then either, but friendships were important. Never did one family foot the bill for drinks, food, and dessert. It was always pot luck, bringing a special dish to an event, with enough food for everyone who came, and brought a dish as well. It made no di erence what anyone ate. Hoagies were just as good as steak, and homemade potato salad was the perfect addition. Desserts might be some brownies, or even a few bowls of jello, so food was not the point. e point was getting together with friends and neighbors, playing catch with the kids, talking about who was looking forward to what, and mostly, knowing that we were all in this together.

From my standpoint, at least the community where I live, that is not the case. ere is a de nite disconnect for no reason that I can gure out. Yes, there has been quite a bit of political turmoil, crime, and chaos over the past decade, and possibly longer, but why can’t we all unite on at least one front: friendship.

For What it’s

Worth, I’m going to make it my business to invite my neighbors over for a pot luck dinner party as soon as the weather cools. It’s anybody’s guess whether anyone will show up, but at least I’m not going to wait for someone else to take the lead. If no one shows, you can be sure I’ll let you know!! Maybe we can all restart a long overdue trend!
