We can live 2 weeks without food, 2 days without water, and a mere 2 minutes without air. Breath is life. Our breathing pattern greatly affects how we make decisions, how we react, and how we handle situations each day. In stressful scenarios, we are often reminded to take deep, long breaths as a way to settle our nerves. Breathing, the most basic thing we do all day, is easy to ignore; yet, there’s more going on with each breath than we realize.
Meet Julie Adams — Julie is a lifetime resident of Palm Beach County who has been an active member of the Mental Health Recovery Society for 30 years. She has also led a successful nursing career for over 20 years. Julie’s professional journey and life experiences brought her to the healing power of Emergence Breath.
Julie was rst introduced to this incredible, impactful process of Emergence Breath at the Jamar Enlightenment Center. She was so inspired by the simplicity of using one’s own breath to heal that she took the next step and became a certi ed Emergence Breath facilitator and group leader.
“My journey to heal others helped heal me,” af rms Julie. She goes on to explain Emergence Breath as a deeply moving process that helps integrate, re-program, and release negative beliefs or behaviors, replacing them with new feelings of peace, passion, and joy.

I had the opportunity to experience Emergence Breath with Julie during a semi-private session. We were brought into the airy studio at the Jamar Center, where Julie carefully placed us in a comfortable position on a mat with pillows for our legs and heads.
The rst 30 minutes of the 90-minute session featured a thorough explanation of what we would experience and why certain sensations would occur. This process is referred to as the “orientation portion” of the Emergence Breath adventure, wherein Julie enthusiastically explains the entire experience using the acronym
“W-I-N-G-S.”
Beginning with “W,” which represents where the process takes place, Emergence Breath employs the diaphragm using mouth breathing. I realized that I used my breath more times in this 1-hour session than I did with my normal, shallow breathing in one day!

“I” is all about the inhale. Emergence Breathing conditioned me to take continuous 4-second inhales followed by shorter exhales. This constant loop of inhales and exhales represents the physical aspect of the process. Julie explained that we would feel a tingling, even oating, sensation as we continued to change our breathing pattern. The reason for this sensation, which was quite remarkable, is due to what Julie refers to as our “low vibrations.” These low vibrations are a result of traumas, large and small, that have occurred in our lives that we may have tried to tuck away, but our tissues and minds have retained. The “N” in the acronym reminds us to maintain a closed circular ow of inhale and exhale… No pauses. Because I was new to this technique, I, thankfully, had Julie there by my side, coaching and encouraging me to keep breathing. As my body adjusted to the dynamic physical transformations, I learned that the next stage would affect us mentally, with clients releasing their fears of what they are becoming. As my breathing became more rhythmic, I felt more clarity, and realized that each Emergence Breath session is perfect for each individual… it’s your breath.
The “G” (got to let it go) - relaxing the diaphragm on exhale and “S” (surrender) illustrate the spiritual authenticity of Emergence Breath. Julie explains, “At this stage of the process, this is where we are exposed to more of our true authentic self because everything is cleared.” The “let go” allows one to “surrender” to whatever happens. This release can produce feelings of joy and laughter, as well as encourage tears... it can be quite emotional! Julie coaches her clients to use techniques such as toning, which is deep breathing with sound and pounding a soft mat. These techniques allow clients to energetically keep their cadence and achieve a deeper breathing pattern.
During the last 20 minutes of the Emergence Breath session, we were coached by Julie on how to maintain a closed circular ow of breathing. She assisted me with proper diaphragm breathing and release techniques. At the close of the session, I had an increase in energy level, and my mind, which is often lled with to-do lists, felt quiet... Not to mention I had an amazing night’s sleep!
Breath is the foundation of our very being, and every choice we make is based on our breathing pattern.
