For What It’s Worth by Dr. Melfi , Ph.D.
If you have waved goodbye to your high school or college years, and are well into adulthood with all of its responsibilities, you might have le something behind. Sure, you may have a couple of children, maybe a new house, and a promising career, but while you were acquiring your new life, you probably didn’t have a chance to bring your personality, your belief systems, your private thoughts and dreams, and your needs along with you. So o en, we are too busy to catch our breath, to soak in a tub, to meditate and smell the roses. It’s a whirlwind of grocery shopping, cooking meals, scrubbing oors and trying to t in an hour or so of interrupted television time before you fall into bed, exhausted, and wondering where the time has gone. But what about taking time out for getting reacquainted with the you that you have become. e adult you, who might still be sporting the same old hairstyle and make-up, and the same old thought processes, doesn’t quite t anymore.
We should take inventory every ten years or so, to reassess what our needs are, what we are willing to put up with, which friends have turned out to be loyal, and which friends are simply taking up space. Sometimes we just get stuck in the past, or we’ve given up. Sometimes life gets in the way. In a perfect world, all women should be sent on a four-day retreat every decade, to have uninterrupted time to be pampered physically and mentally, to meditate and answer questionnaires about your needs now, not the ones you had in the past. We should be allowed to voice our opinions as to our disappointments with people we’ve vowed to spend our lives with, if that has become a problem, and without judgment, work through which relationships can be salvaged and which are better le . But we don’t have that luxury, we aren’t going to be sent on an all-expense paid mental and physical vacation. Still, there are things we can do in our own home, that cost little to nothing. A bubble bath, a good book, some quiet time while the children are sleeping. e oors will still need mopping tomorrow.
For What it’s Worth, make time today, without guilt, to light some candles, try on a new make up product, venture out of your comfort zone with a pair of dangling earrings, apply bright red nail polish and take a long, long bubble bath. If you have a husband or partner, ask them to give you one night, once a week, to yourself, to do what you want, to refresh your outlook and begin anew. In the long-run, both of you will reap the bene ts!
