Christmas in Little Falls is Back!

by Laura Powers It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas… in Little Falls! The City of Little Falls invites you to save the dates. That’s right – the DATES! Christmas in Little Falls (CILF) returns with a two-day celebration. Friday, December 10th and Saturday, December 11th will be filled with festive events, specials, and entertainment.

For over a decade, this staple event has offered a day filled with holiday cheer. Like so many things, the activities were postponed last year with hopes that CILF could return for 2021. This summer, a group of volunteers met at the LF Youth and Family Center to discuss a revival. The discussion centered upon how to maintain some of the more traditional pieces of the event and how to incorporate new features.

One of the most notable changes is the expan-

sion to include Friday evening as a kickoff to the regular full-day event. The inaugural Celebration of Lights at Canal Place takes place 5:30-7:30pm. Sterzinar Park will transform into a winter wonderland of lights with a tree lighting ceremony, free tractor pulled wagon rides, outdoor musical entertainment, shopping, yummy eats, activities and more! Valley Cinemas will also host a screening of the Christmas classic ‘Elf’ at 7:30pm for just $3/ticket.

The fun continues bright and early the next morning. Other new additions include a reading of ‘Little Blue Truck Christmas’ which is perfect for younger children and will take place at the Little Falls Public Library at 9:30am. Guests can also have their photo taken with our very own little blue trucked decked out for the occasion. Then Watch Second Street come alive as Candy Cane Lane with outdoor hol-

iday-themed Reindeer Games for kids from 9am12pm. And Pause for All Paws invites you to the Youth and Family Center from 10am-12:30pm for Paw Patrol themed activities and goodie bags while supplies last. There will be face painting by Leysmy of La Take-ria and the NEW House of Flavor Bar & Grill located 622 E Main. New businesses join the fun as well with Main Street Mercantile offering free family holiday polaroids, Chickweed Boutique’s wish list event, and The Mustard Seed (returning to LF) providing gift basket central.

Of course, there are classic events that return including live music. The LF High School student band will perform at Elk’s at 10am, then at 11am the Edelweiss Schuplatters German Dancers will perform, followed by the Appalachian Still Band from 12-2pm, and finally The Brian Mulkerne Band from 3-5pm. The LF First Presbyterian Church will also be caroling along E Main Street from 10am-12pm.

Other classic CILF activities return including an 8am registration ($20/runner, ages 12 and under free) at the Youth

and Family Center for the annual Red Nose Reindeer Run organized by Rock City Runners. Feet hit the street at 9am when Santa starts this festive 5k and runners dressed in their best holiday outfits race throughout the city and end at Ed & Bud’s for the award ceremony and to sip a Tom & Jerry holiday drink. Advanced online registration is also available. Santa will then tour the city in a firetruck and be dropped off at the Youth and Family Center at 10am for professional photos with guests until 12pm! Of course, free horsedrawn wagon rides return from 11:30am-2:30pm to offer tours of historic downtown with pick-up & drop-off at the M&T Bank lot. There will also be open houses throughout the day at Paca Gardens, the Arts Center (MVCA), Showcase Antiques of CNY, LF Antique Center, and the WCA. The LF Historical Society offers an outdoor exhibit as well.

In the theme of ‘giving to others,’ the Tipsy Server Race hits E Main Street at 11am.

Come cheer on your favorite server as they race for charity trying not to spill their trays laden with drinks! Many organizations have benefited from this competition and the fun begins at Ruggiero’s Trattoria.

Another charity-focused event challenges taste buds rather than racing skills. The popular Soup Fest coordinated by Think Local Little Falls runs from 11am-2pm. For $10, you can taste all the delicious soups and stews by the best chefs from Little Falls and all proceeds benefit local charities.

The spirit of giving continues with St. Paul’s Universalist Church holding a hat

and mitten giveaway from 122pm, and there will be a toy collection at Dollar General all day long.

The entire city will be bustling with entertainment, activities, shopping and more throughout the day. Herkimer County Budget hearing set for December 15th “The Herkimer County Legislature has accepted the tentative budget of $107,416,273 for 2022,” stated Patrick Russell, Chairman of the Ways & Means Committee. He added “The tentative budget has a flat tax levy from last year and a 3.48% decrease in the tax rate. Each municipality’s rate will vary due to what happened with the City and towns’ equalization rates.

This tax rate decrease is in line with the last eight years with the average decrease over that span being 2.13%.”

Chairman Bono added, “I’m leased that we are able to produce a structurally sound budget that carries a tax rate decrease without cuts in services.”

The Legislature is proud of the job our employees have always done, but especially for the last 21 months during COVID. We didn’t lay off a single employee during this difficult time and our employees answered the bell to provide the necessary services to our residents.”

Budget Officer Ferdula added “Some of the headwinds we faced in preparing the 2022 budget were lost revenues of $336,686 on our In Rem tax sales, $200,000 increase to other community colleges, $200,000 in Mental Health placements (state cut their 50% share two years ago), a loss of interest earnings of $125,000 and an increase of $140,000 in utility costs. On the positive side, we are seeing a $1.4 million dollar increase in sales tax, $80,000 in gaming revenue, a $100,000 increase in additional Medicaid Part D reimbursements, and a $100,000 increase in the County’s portion of the mortgage tax.” She added, “There is no use of General Fund unassigned fund balance in this budget.”

Mr. Russell concluded “With the influx of federal dollars that we anticipate will not be available in the near future, we are happy with this budget not just for 2022 but for moving the County’s finances forward for the next several years. I want to thank the Ways & Means Committee, the entire Legislature, Mr. Wallace and Ms. Ferdula as well as all of the Department Heads and staff for the work done on this budget as well as for their efforts day in and day out for the taxpayers of Herkimer County The tentative budget has been submitted to the Clerk of the Legislature and is available for viewing in her office. It is also online at www.herkimercounty. org. Copies of the tentative budget are available in the Budget Office. The Legislature has scheduled a public hearing on the budget for December 15, 2021,at 6:00 p.m. and it will be voted on by the Legislature on that date.

SOUTHSIDE CIGAR STORES Author Gary Staffo Submitted by The Little Falls Historical Society

This article came about as part of the research started for the Southside Veteran’s Recognition Project, which was displayed during the September 2013 Southside Reunion. It covers the period from the 1930s through the mid-1970s and the role three Southside cigar stores played in the lives of the young men who grew up hanging out around them. The first of the three “hangouts” was Tommie’s Smoke Shop, which was owned by Tommie Yanno and was originally located on East Jefferson Street during the mid to late 1920s. This store later moved to 11 Flint Avenue and became our article’s second establishment, Staffos Cigar Store, which operated until about 1952. The last was Masle’s Cigar Store, owned by Larry Masle from the late 1940s until the mid-1970s at 407 South Ann Street.

(Note: Similar “pool halls” such as Foxy’s, Bride’s, Wally’s, and Charlie’s were located on the north side of the Mohawk River in Little Falls.)

The first part of this article discusses the role that the cigar stores played in shaping young men’s lives and some of the mystique about what went on in them.

The article’s second part focuses on the World War II period and Staffos Cigar Store.

This part includes excerpts from postcards and letters sent home from the cigar store boys, and how these once primary sources for young men’s social and recreational personal friendships gradually faded away.

THE ROLE OF CIGAR STORES FOR YOUNG MEN During the 1930’s through the mid-1970s, the local cigar stores played an important role in the coming of age for many young men in Little Falls. Tommie’s, Staffos, and Masle’s Cigar Stores were a major part of these young men’s formative teenage years. This was especially true during World War II as it was the place from where these young men went off

to war, and one of the first places they went to when they came home. These were the years when friendships were for life, which started in youth when most of your free time was spent with your pals. During this period Jefferson Street School provided an education for all “Southsiders” from Kindergarten to Grade 6.

When not in school most boys had work to do around home or for others, but when not working they engaged in sports, games, and other outside activities year-round. Junior and Senior High School followed and the “Southsiders” made the transition to Benton Hall and Little Falls High School, where the sports teams had a healthy contingent of Southside athletes.

It was during their early teen years that these young men moved from hanging around outside the cigar store to trying to get inside past the front store area, and into the back room where the pool tables were located and the card games were played.

CIGAR STORE “GANGS” Cigar stores were the first real “man caves” and a second home to many young men. It was where they caught up on all the local news and a place where they were very comfortable and shared their opinions, dreams, and problems.

At that time it was also where they learned the facts of life across all areas. The rite of passage of getting past the front store area to the sacred back room was a challenging and mysterious process of trial and error that did not seem to have any logic. To these young men, it became a badge of an earned acceptance by not only the owner but also by those who were already so privileged. Although it was rumored that there was a local law or ordinance that required youth to be at least 16 years of age to enter a pool hall, some entered younger while some were not allowed until later. Big brothers and cousins were notorious for keeping younger brothers and related youth out of the back room. In some cases, it may have been well-intentioned, but in many instances, it was to protect their own privacy and to ensure that a little brother or cousin did not accidentally spill the beans about something that the parents or family would not approve of. It was here, in this teenage sanctuary, that young men told tall

In 1998, I was hired for my very first food service job as a waitress at Friendly’s in the Sangertown Mall- (back when they still had a smoking section). You know who managed that Friendlys? Bonita, who now owns and operates The Sandwich Chef. When I worked at the Overlook Mansion in 2000 as a waitress and bartender, I fondly think of my close friend Michelle Hanson who was the sue chef there and now owns and operates the Ann Street Deli. 20 years later, we’re still close friends.

Tradition Since 2011, there’s a Little Falls tradition where we celebrate the bartenders and servers from the fine bars and restaurants in Little Falls, formerly known as the Bartenders Race.

It’s now rebranded with a more inclusive title: “Tipsy Server Race” and takes place during Christmas in Little Falls. It will be held this year on Saturday, December 11th at 11am on Main Street from Mary Street to Second Street.

What is the Tipsy Server Race you ask? Well, servers and bartenders compete to win a 100 yard(ish) dash down Main Street carrying a tray with a beer bottle and a glass (without spilling anything off the tray). Its not as easy as you would think. In addition to the bragging rights earned by winning, it’s a fun event for many great causes.

The Impact Each server or bartender competing, raises money for the charity of their choice, and regardless of the winner, each charity will receive the proceeds. So, in addition to celebrating our fine food industry folks, there is much good done along the way!

Prizes are awarded for the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place finishers in the race and prize for the person who raises the most money for the charity of their choice.

Katrina Talbot has been helping to keep this tradition alive for the past few years.

She said, “We are hoping for the biggest turn out we have ever had. It would be so cool to see each business have a

tales, and the newly admitted kept quiet, but with ears wide open listening to the “older” men as if they were prophets with sage advice for success in all areas. This was especially true when it came to advice about the ladies, for there was a continuing and growing attraction for the opposite sex that displaced earlier priorities of sports, food, and drink. Friendly rivalries, teasing, and kidding around were demonstrated openly and often, and in many cases led to nicknames that often stuck with a person from youth through adulthood.

The stories behind nicknames are an article in itself, but it is important here because during the World War II years correspondence from these young men to the “cigar store gang” reads like a code, with many nicknames used and requiring translation. Let’s end this first part by defining “gang” and noting how it was used. At that time “gang” was understood by all to mean a group of guys having an informal and common association of hanging out together at a cigar store. It meant a friendly group, although somewhat untamed, without nefarious designs. STAFFOS CIGAR STORE Staffos Cigar Store was run by two Staffo brothers, Rock and Mike, who took over Tommie’s sometime in the mid-1930s and operated it until the early 1950s. Photos from the early 1930s show an overhead sign “Tommie’s Smoke Shop” (that at some time later was repainted to say “Mike’s Smoke Shop”), and “Tommie’s” on the window of the store. The photo to the left, taken circa mid-1930s, shows Mike Staffo wearing a “Staffos Cigar Store” T-Shirt alongside Mossy Eysamen. (Note: Although Staffo’s is grammatically correct, we use Staffos to be historically consistent with how used during this period for the shirt and mail) This photo started my Staffos Cigar Store research in 2013 and resulted in my finding the “Mike’s Smoke Shop” sign stored inside at 11 Flint Avenue.

THE ROLE OF STAFFOS CIGAR STORE As previously stated, during the years of World War II, the Korean War,

and on into the 1970s, cigar stores played an important role in the coming of age of many young men in Little Falls. On the Southside, Staffos Cigar Store at 11 Flint Avenue was a central gathering place for neighborhood young men. During World War II it was the place from where they went off to war and one of the first places they returned to when they came home. In the June 1943 photo below taken at the store, John “Matchy” Staffo, standing front row center, poses with five other Southside friends just before they all headed overseas. It is important to note that preceding World War II over 75% of the United States population had never ventured more than fifty miles from where they were born and raised. World War II would take these “pool hall boys” thousands of miles from home to countries and cultures they may have never have heard of, or only read about. For many of them it would be years before they returned, and a few who would sadly never come home.

They gave us cider and doughnuts. It must have made some guys sick. The beer is pretty good down here but I’ve had only about 20 since I’ve been here.

Had K.P. four days in a row for raising hell. Wed-Sat. *I put that mark there because that’s where I stopped to go to church. It’s not hurting me I guess.

Not only did the “Gang” write home, but on the home front family, friends, and Southside merchants sent letters and packages to their boys. These were greatly anticipated and deeply appreciated, especially overseas after having had first-hand combat experiences.

From my dad, Nicholas “Chick” Staffo (HQ Cannon Company, 24th Infantry Division, 21st Regiment) in a letter home dated August 14, 1944, from New Guinea. “. . . We also got some American candy for a change,

M O H A W K baby Ruths, butterfingers, and Hershey’s. They sure were a sight for sore eyes, getting this candy and beer may not mean anything to you, but to me, it was a Godsend. A fellow doesn’t mind it so much if he is given treats like that once in a while . . .”

From my uncle, Rock Staffo, one of the owners of the cigar store, to his brother, “Matchy,” in a letter dated August 13, 1943.

“Received your letter today and was glad to hear that you are O.K. . . . Say so you’re having Ice Cream. Well, I’m glad that somebody can get it now, especially you fellows.

It’s tough to get good Ice Cream, only Sherbert . . . . You didn’t receive my first letter yet, I notice. Chauty and Rock Dinardi arranged for a weekend visit and they had a heck of a time together. I got a let-

ter from them yesterday telling me about it. . . . I got your clippings, send some more if you can…. “ Author’s Note: On October 10, 1943, John “Matchy” Staffo (99th Bomb Group, 348th Bomb Squadron) was killed in action over the Gulf of Corinth on a bombing mission near Athens, Greece. The letter from his oldest brother Rock arrived too late and was returned to sender.

From my dad, Nicholas “Chick” Staffo (HQ Cannon Company, 24th Infantry Division, 21st Regiment) in a letter home dated February 21, 1945, from the Philippines. “ . . . I’ve seen combat again and I hope this is my last campaign. I’ve had some real experiences in this affair and it wasn’t very pleasant. I prayed before, but this time I really never stopped. I’ve said

my Rosary’s in fox holes and many other hiding places. I know my prayers were being answered because I was pulled out of many tight spots without a scratch. . . .I met a boy from LF while we were engaging the enemy. His name is Walt Redjinski and he lives on Furnace St. He’s only 19 so I didn’t know him. He told me that one of the Verri boys was here also but I never did see him. . .”

Author’s Note: On February 13, 1945, Fiorello Verri from Flint Avenue (11th Airborne Division, 187th Paraglider Regiment, E Company) was killed in action at Nichols Field, Manila, Philippines.

EPILOGUE There are many other stories found in the letters written back and forth between Southside families, friends, and store owners on the home front. In

all of these letters from “the Gang” the boys consistently request more mail with news from home.

Staffos Cigar Store was sold to Mike Bulger in the early 1950s and for some reason, the young men moved to a new location, Masle’s Cigar Store on South Ann Street.

Larry Masle ran the store for the next 25 years as his place became the new home for the next generation to come of age.

With the closing of Masle’s in the mid-1970s, the end of an era was marked. Little Falls’ society and neighborhoods evolved reflecting a dwindling population, with more structured youth activities and other lifestyle changes. This evolution led to most of the traditional cigar stores closing down, and with this, some of the mysterious backroom activities and mystique of the “pool halls” came to an end

The police have been investigating a very mysterious case during the past week, and if the “Woman in Black” continues as mystifying as she has been and again makes her appearance without being captured, then the officers and others who have seen her are willing to swear that she does not belong in this terrestrial sphere.

For some time there have been rumors that a strange woman dressed in black was seen upon the streets in the eastern part of the city, usually late in the evening, cutting up many pranks, one of the diversions being to leap over high fences with the greatest of ease when any one approached. About the first of the week she was alleged to have been seen on the south side, and her actions were of the same mysterious manner.

The next sighting of the “Woman in Black” was about 6 o’clock last Wednesday morning, when Policeman Long who was standing opposite the Beattie House, saw a strange looking woman who was very tall, apparently more than six feet, and dressed in a black skirt, shawl and veil, walking steadily up the south side of Main Street. She darted into the Beattie

House yard and made some peculiar motion with her hands. Just then the Policeman walked across the street and offered his assistance to the woman.

She made no reply, but started to run, the officer pursuing her as fast as his legs could carry him. He commanded her to halt, but to no avail, and she turned onto William Street like a whirlwind. She came down Albany Street and when in front of the Universalist

Church, stopped to adjust some of her garments under the electric light. She held in her hand what the policeman took to be a long dagger. He again shouted for her to halt and although a good sprinter, the officer says she had him distanced before she turned onto Second Street. It seemed impossible, he said, to get only within a certain distance of the woman who all the time never uttered a sound.

Many Saw Her When John Street was reached she bounded across the railroad track so fast that it almost took the breath away from Gatetender Bry Stevens. A belated drunk was lying upon the broad of his back on the west side of Ann Street.

The woman bent over him for a moment and then again started on a run.

Night Watchman Holmes, Patrolman Klock and Engineer “Charley” Casler and Fireman George Davis saw her in her flight, and gave the same description of her as that of Policeman Long.

She passed Policeman Gross near the Jefferson Street Bridge and greeted him with a sardonic grin from under her heavily veiled features. She was 30 years old, he thought, but of the funniest make-up he ever saw.

A short time after she passed Gross.

Policeman Long appeared, a poor second in the race. Both officers then took up the chase. For a time the form of the woman was lost to view, and then they discovered her running up the hill to Danube Street. She disappeared from view and a moment later the officers say she uttered a piercing, agonizing yell and then all was silent. In the vicinity there are sharp rocks and deep gullies and it is a spookish place at best. The officers searched for more than an hour, but no trace of her could be found.

The place was also searched next day, but nothing was discovered to help solve the mystery. There are no houses in the immediate vicinity of the spot where the woman was last seen when she disappeared as if by magic.

The matter was kept quiet for the time being in the hope that the woman would again make her appearance.

The police are baffled and have not theory to offer as to the mystery.

Governor Kathy Hochul today extended an invitation to New Yorkers and visitors alike to explore all the new experiences available in New York State this winter.
