He was given his first professional head coaching position with the Kentucky Colonels in the old ABA where his team won the league championship with a 58 – 26 record. When the two leagues merged in 1976, he became a coach for the Atlanta Hawks. From 1976 to 1987 Hubie was head coach of the Atlanta Hawks and the New York Knicks, and after a fifteen-year “layoff” he returned to coaching with the Memphis Grizzlies from 2002 to 2004. He was noted for his defensive mentality. Hubie was named NBA Coach of the Year in 1978 and 2004, the honors being separated by a span of 26 years. His overall record coaching in professional basketball was 559 wins and 592 losses.

Hubie began his long and distinguished broadcasting career after being fired by the Hawks and has, over the years, worked games for the USA Network, CBS, TNT, ABC, and ESPN working alongside the top broadcasters in the business. Still working occasionally, at age 88, he is widely considered today as the finest NBA analyst. Hubie was nominated for a Sports Emmy in 1994 and 1999, and in 2000 was the recipient of the Curt Gowdy Award for outstanding contributions to basketball.

HALL OF FAME

Hubie Brown reached the pinnacle of sports excellence when he was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame as a contributor in 2005. At Hubie’s invitation, I attended the NBA induction ceremonies in Springfield, Massachusetts along with Father Joe Halloran, Jim Dinneen, and Jerry Shepardson. During his acceptance speech, Hubie acknowledged St. Mary’s and Little Falls. He said, “Way back in September in 1955 I was at my first day at a little Catholic school, St. Mary’s in Little Falls, New York. We had about 120 kids in high school and you are saying why is he bringing this up. Because this is what the award does for you. Sitting out in the audience tonight is Father Joe Halloran. He was there for me in ’55 and with him are three guys who helped me, and they are here tonight. And this is what knocks you out. This is such a meaningful thing to me. This is all about what this award does – it brings people like this out.”

At the ceremonies, I sat next to Pat Summit the famous coach of the Tennessee lady’s basketball team and she asked me what Hubie was like when he started coaching at St. Mary’s Academy way back in 1955. One thing that I can say is that he never forgot his roots!

shop. “That worked out to not be an option.”

The fourth option is what worked for her. “This wonderful woman named Barb walked in to talk with me and she said - I heard you are looking for a new spot. It was an old church at 78 North Main Street, a beautiful location. I was a little bit hesitant because it didn’t look like a storefront and all the others did. You had to think a lot about how this could work, and that’s where all the friends came to the rescue.”

She said that a lot of people are locked into what a storefront should look like and a church, doesn’t fit that model. “A lot of people who were from out of the area could see it and said do it. People here said you want that window so people can see in,” she said. “Even I got stuck on that idea.”

In the end, with a lot of thinking and input from her friends, she decided to take the chance. “It’s good to take advice from people who have been there before,” she stated. “It’s a beautiful structure and once we started moving in, it felt right. It ended up working out.”

She says that it’s a lot bigger than her previous store. “I really like it on the overcast dreary days because you have these little Christmas tree lights in there and it looks so homey.”

Rutkowski said that having the extra space is going to allow her to expand her gift offerings and that on the flower side, she might be able to get into silk flowers a bit more, as well as outdoor plants when the weather permits.

“We’re officially telling people now that we are also going to have a tea room in November, which will open on the 9th. So that will be a fun thing as well. It screams for something elegant where you can just sit and enjoy your time in there,” she stated.

“Right now it will be selfservice until we can get all the permits that are required. Maybe if it takes off, we’ll add even more to it. We want to be able to grow the business and see where it goes.”

Rutkowski says that it’s just a really comforting space, and she’s even thinking about having a piano in one of the corners. “It’s not going to be like a concert location, it will just be off to the side. It will be a nice little place where you can just go in and play for a couple of hours if you’d like to.”

“We’re just going to do it and I hope everyone

Let’s All Get Vaccinated

Vaccines are one of the tools we have to fight the COVID-19 pandemic.

• Over 338 million doses of COVID-19 vaccine were administered in the United States from December 14, 2020, through July 22, 2021. • Vaccines are one of the most effective tool to protect your health and prevent disease. Vaccines work with your body’s natural defenses so your body will be ready to fight the virus, if they you are exposed (also called immunity). • Studies have shown the COVID 19 vaccinations are safe, effective, & it’s free. • Different types of vaccines are available. Most vaccines are given in two shots, one at a time and spaced apart. If you are told that you need two shots make sure that you get both. • The vaccines may cause side mild effects in some people, like sore muscles, feeling tired, or mild fever. These reactions mean that the vaccine is working to help teach your body how to fight

COVID-19 if you are exposed. Most side effects will not last more than a day or two. • COVID-19 Variants are present in the community and the unvaccinated are at risk of getting sick and being hospitalized. • Please consider getting vaccinated so that we can protect all of the children that cannot be vaccinated.

things that she loved. “If you combine the two, you have the best outcome.”

At this point, two and a half years ago, they converted the one-car garage at her house to hold classes. “I was training a lot of people one on one in the garage and it was a very basic setup. Very Simplistic. You don’t need a ton of equipment, you just need to know how to use it in the right way.”

Then she thought that during the summer, she could extend what she was doing by opening the garage door and using the driveway to allow more women to participate. “So, I started a class called ‘build and burn’ which was teaching women how to confidently lift weights. It was kind of like circuit training. We got the best of both worlds.”

Through all of that, she says that she grew a really nice base of her ‘build and burn’ girls that allowed her to expand. “When I really started to get busy, my husband said I think you need to choose. You’re working almost full time at this and as a vet tech.”

“It got hard to manage, but it was hard to leave a secure job that I’ve had for thirteen years that I really enjoyed. It was probably the toughest decision that I’ve ever had to make. Handing in that resignation letter was just the hardest thing to do. I was holding back tears because I didn’t want to disappoint Dr. Spalding because I admired him a lot,” she stated. That was in June of 2019 and then COVID happened. “I’d just given up a job that I’d had for thirteen years and all the gyms were closed,” she said.

They had not started building the new facility, but they had looked at the land at that point. The couple had also looked at some old buildings in Dolgeville and other potential locations.

“We were getting nowhere with finding a location to build a gym. We thought that building from scratch would be way too expensive and not manageable,” she said.

However, she contacted a Mennonite that owned the four-acre plot of land where their facility is now located and he sold it to them. “He gave us a great deal that we couldn’t ignore and we decided that we were going to build.”

Daukontas felt that there was some risk, but that she had a good following that would make it work. “I would regret it if I had never tried.”

They bought the land last May and started building the 3,600 square foot facility in June, and they’ve been officially open since January 1st, and since then, she feels that they’ve really built an awesome community.

They have two additional businesses in the building - a massage therapist that is there by appointment only and a chiropractor that is there twice a week by appointment only as well.

For services, they have a members-only open gym with 24-hour access. “Our members have a little key fob and they can come any time they want,” she stated.

They offer personal training, group classes, nutrition counseling, two bathrooms with showers, central air and heat, and a stellar view. “It was beautiful when the trees had their full foliage. We have just about everything you need to get strong and healthy here,” she said.
