After three successful years in the food truck business, Heather Lamphere and Julie Izzo have decided to plant permanent roots in the former Alfie’s Diner location at 83 North Main Street in Dolgeville.

Lamphere is from the area, living in Salisbury and going to Dolgeville schools. She’s a teacher in Richfield Springs, teaching high school English.

She said, “I always thought this would be

what I did in retirement, but I guess we’re getting there a little earlier than that.”

Lamphere and Izzo started with the Southern Girl Food Truck about four years ago and they were working hard with it, but having fun at the same time.

Izzo is from Ashville North Carolina, and she’s been in New York for about 21 years but hasn’t lost a bit of her accent. “I’ve been in the Dolgeville area for 18 or 19 years now.”

She has been in the restaurant business for 32 years. “I’ve probably worked in at least 30 restaurants in my life.”

The idea for the food truck came up while she was home with the kids, thinking about what she

“My sister passed away four years ago, and she was a wonderful cook, and she inspired me to just go after it after I had dropped that idea on her. She said follow your dreams, you can totally do it,” Izzo stated.

She started thinking about all the people who had inspired her over the years with that feeling of home, roots, and family recipes that had been passed down. “I decided that I wanted to cook, and I wanted it to be good for people, and something that kids would enjoy.”

Izzo loves festivals and events and she thought “People need something different to eat when they go to a festival. So, that’s where these different ideas for food came

Lamphere said Izzo was babysitting her kids one day and she had told her about the idea. “One day I pulled into the driveway and here is this giant pink food trailer in the driveway, and I was ‘what is that?’”

Izzo had bought it just three weeks prior to the Violet Festival, and that was going to be her first time out in public with the idea. Lamphere said, “You’re going to get all this ready by then?”

Lamphere watched the daily progress and felt that she wanted to be part of it as well. “So, it was the week of the Violet Festival and she

was going crazy getting ready and I said, Who’s helping you?”

“You kind of have to be invited to the bigger shows,” Izzo stated.

“Who is going to be with you the whole time because you cannot do this by yourself,” she said.

They had their first big surprise at the Remsen Barn Festival’s 40th-anniversary event.

“We won first place for food truck vendors,” said Izzo. “We were beside ourselves.”

Izzo said, “Well I don’t have anybody,” so Lamphere said she’d be there.

From that day forward, the two have worked together on making the Southern Girl Food Truck a success. Izzo said, “We’ve been like Gouda and Blackberry since then, which is one of our favorite sandwiches.”

They did two years of the food truck business, starting out with smaller shows the first year, and then bigger ones in year two. “That first year was a real learning year for us,” stated Lamphere.

“It was a great second year, but our third year was COVID and we didn’t open up at all. So, this is our fourth year, but the third one in business,” she said.

Lamphere said that even though they’re planning on opening up the restaurant in Dolgeville the first week of September, they are going to continue with the last scheduled events that they have for the year with the truck.

“It’d be nice to have them there officially declaring it a record, that’d be great, but that’s not what’s going to happen. We’re going to submit the evidence and stuff and it’s going to take them a few weeks to get back to us to confirm the record,” he said.

Cassella said that every time his phone rings and it shows that it’s Moore, he has a mini panic attack. “He’s been kind of dragging me along.

I think he kinda saw the ending way before I did.

I thought, yeah, I’ve got a thousand bucks I can throw at this.”

He said that looking back now, he was pretty naive.

“I don’t even know the amount of money we’re putting into this.”

Moore said that he was thinking ‘festival’ all the time. “I thought we were going to buy a bunch of cheese and things and go to the field with 10 friends and have a get-together,” stated Cassella.

The next couple of weeks are crucial for the event as the organizers finish the final details. “We’re

still securing sponsors, selling tickets, doing our interviews with media.

There’s just so much going on,” Moore said.

“Sometimes opportunity just shows up and you have to jump at it,” said Izzo. “This was friends and followers of our food truck and people that have supported us from day one making connections, and wanting their diner back,” Lamphere said.

“We’re still going to do the Cheese Festival in Little Falls because those Little Falls festivals and the Dolgeville events were really the springboard for us. People know us and follow us on Facebook and we want to keep that following,” she stated.

They also plan on having the food truck at the 315 Foodies event on September 26, 2021, as that group goes after the world record for the longest Charcuterie board. “We’re pretty excited about that too,” said Izzo.

The food truck for both of them was like a parttime fun thing during the summer. “A hard workin’ girls day out,” Izzo said.

Izzo is quitting her fulltime job to open the diner.

“It’s going to be a lot easier for me, I’ll be right here in my hometown. I don’t have to travel and my kids are right here in school.”

Lamphere says that she’s going to help as much as she can while continuing to teach for the next 12 years. “Whether it’s early in the morning, after work, or on the weekends, I’ll be here, but my life will definitely be different.”

The two said that they’re planning on opening from 7 - 2 Tuesday through Sunday. “We plan on bringing our food truck sandwiches here and incorporating those into

the menu, but also some typical diner fare,” stated Izzo.

Soups sandwiches, burgers, pulled pork, and all of the traditional breakfast items will be on the menu, but you will also see a little bit of a Southern twist to things.

“There’s going to be some grits and home fries in there. And, for lunch, I’m also going to do some shrimp and grits, which is also one of my favorites,” said Izzo.

Poll workers needed for November election According to Herkimer County election officials, the City of Little Falls is short twelve poll workers for the upcoming November 2, 2021 election.

Kim S. Tranter, Republican Commissioner at the Herkimer County Board of Elections stated, “On election day, we need twenty poll inspectors.

Those are the people who sit at the table. For each election district, and the City of Little Falls has five, we have to have four

workers - two Republicans and two Democrats.”

Tranter thinks that because a lot of the poll workers were elderly, that they have been affected

by COVID. “They just dropped off one by one.

Last year we were able to handle the Presidential election with fill-ins. Even though they went through the training, they’re not our normal poll workers that you would see every year.”

Pizza Challenge Returns to Little Falls The mission of Think Local Little Falls is to promote a “local living economy” by bolstering locally owned businesses.

Over the years, the group has developed a Third Thursday series of events to highlight business and encourage patrons to spend their dollars to support local.

One of those events is the Pizza Challenge.

Think Local hosts their 5th Pizza Challenge on Thursday, September 16 on East Main Street in Little Falls. This laidback event can be taken at your own pace and is delicious fun for all ages.

Participants can purchase a ticket for

$6 to sample pizza between 4-7 pm at each participating pizzeria including Ruggiero’s Trattoria, Ed’s Pizza Place, Italian Feast, Skobby’s, and Mangia Macrina’s Wood Fired Pizza. Ticket holders are also invited to have a dessert bite at Il Caffé.

Participants who get their tickets stamped at all five pizzerias will be given the opportunity to cast one vote by 7:30 pm for their favorite pizza to help to name this year’s Pizza Challenge victor!

Little Falls resident becomes viral sensation

20th Anniversary 9/11 Remembrance Walk planned Dan Enea with Mohawk Valley Funerals and Cremations, the Little Falls Youth and Family Center (YMCA), and M&T Bank are inviting all community members, first responders, and veterans to take part in the 20th Anniversary 9/11 Free Community Remembrance Walk at Rotary Park.

Enea said, “We do the picnic every year and I thought coming off of COVID we could do something a little more low-key, especially to commemorate the 20th anniversary. So, we came up with the walk, and hopefully, the community will take part in it.”

He said that people can gather at 1 pm in Rotary Park and the walk will begin at 1:30. They’ll

proceed down the Erie Canalway Trail, loop around under the bridge, and then come back to the park.

Little Falls Historical Socity Back in Time Segment The Lost Village of Beardlee’s Mill - Thriving Frontier Community In 1800 on Banks of East Canada Creek

John Beardslee left Sharon, Connecticut in 1781 at the age of twenty-two, skilled as a mechanic, surveyor, and an architect. He came to Herkimer County in 1792 as a government employee. John was hired to build a mill for the Oneida Indians, helping them to rebuild the Mohawk Castle in Danube. His next job was to build the first bridge over the Mohawk River at Little Falls, with building the “Red Mill” next to it. He also was hired to build a bridge, east of Little Falls, known to this day as the Gulf Bridge. The Mohawk Valley had been previously ravished by war during The Revolution. Beardslee was given the job of rebuilding John Joost Petrie’s mill, the grist mill of the massacre of 1782.

These projects required John to need considerable amounts of cut timber.

In March of 1794 he purchased a hundred acre lot on the west bank of the East Canada Creek, with setting up a saw mill at

the falls. He also built a stone bridge spanning the East Canada Creek.

During this time period, there was a flood tide of emigration to the Royal Grant, as well as Western United States, with the village growing rapidly on this lot of land. By 1800, the town consisted of two stores, two taverns, a blacksmith shop, a nail factory, cooperage, and a brewery as well as the sawmill and a grist mill.

The village also had a doctor, Dr. Daniel Ayers, and lawyers and school teachers all settling in his frontier town, which was nearly self- sufficient.

The population was nearly 2,000.

The first decline began in 1802 with the toll road, the Mohawk Turnpike was completed, which was three miles south of Beardslee’s City as he now called the town.

When Mr. Beardslee noted that the highway was taking trade away from his settlement. He purchased another 350 acres in 1810 at the cost of 330 pounds, to expand the village to meet the turnpike. The new “Beardslee City “was built in 1815.

The next decline which the city never recovered from was the opening of the Erie Canal on October 26, 1825, which was on the Mohawk River, taking all the trade from the Mohawk Turnpike. In addition to this, a dam was built on the canal changing water levels so mills could not be built below the “New City.”

Prior to the opening of the canal in October 3,

1825, John Beardslee died from a stomach condition.

Lavina Pardee, his widow whom he married in 1795, bore him three sons and three daughters. The three daughters and one son died young, unmarried with leaving no descendants. Their last surviving son was born in 1801, Augustus Beardslee, who became a judge and

an assemblyman. He built the mausoleum above the cemetery at Beardslee City in 1847, with Lavina being laid to rest there in 1855.

Lavina lived long enough to watch the decline of the city. As business declined, the mill closed and one by one the residents moved away.

“It was really hard to get a job because they wanted experience. Now, all my restaurant, food sales, bartending, and working in marketing and advertising - all facets have come together. I feel like it’s a perfect fit, and I’m pretty good at utilizing the space,” she stated.
