Canal Celebration in Little Falls highlights a busy month

The 34th Annual Canal Celebration in Little Falls is a go for August 9th through the 15th.

Some of the notable ones are the car show on Sunday in Burke Park, adult & youth fishing derbies, the Freedom Run, the Southside walking tour, a cemetery tour, and several dedications by the Little Falls Historical Society. In addition, music and the fireworks display are back on for Rotary Park.

Tony DeLuca, festival organizer stated, “After not being able to host the festival last year, with the loosening of the guidelines and restrictions being lifted, we’ve had enough time to find the volunteers to organize many of the events.”

Vintage Base Ball a new addition to Canal Celebration

A new addition to the Canal Celebration this year will be Vintage Base Ball, which will be played on Saturday, August 14, 2021 at Veterans Memorial Park Field #3.

This kind of baseball evolved very quickly from the 1860s to the 1890s according to Krutz. “We’re based on a team that played in the 1880s and 90s which is when overhand baseball became common, so we’re called an overhand team and that’s the rules that we play by.”

The idea belongs to Andy Krutz, who was born in Little Falls, went to school here, and graduated in 2005. And, he is on a mission to bring back ‘vintage baseball’ to the City on a regular basis.

After going to college, Krutz got a Masters in Forestry Management and had numerous jobs around the country in that field until landing a permanent job in Bloomville NY. Growing up he played soccer and baseball and said that he wasn’t quite good enough to play in college. “Last time I really played organized baseball was when I was 18, but I moved here and got this job and I heard that another forester had started up a vintage baseball team a few years earlier,” he said.

Krutz contacted him and started playing on the team in 2018 and he says one thing led to another.

“Teams like this are scattered throughout the northeast and I think there are even teams like this in the Carolina’s down to

He said that there are also a lot of teams that use the 1860s rules, and they throw underhand and the rules are quite a bit different.

There’s not a significant difference between today’s major league baseball and vintage league teams, but according to Krutz, there are differences.

“You can have an infinite number of foul balls with no strikes called on you and the balls are a little softer.

Lots of players back then didn’t wear gloves of any kind and the gloves that did exist looked like leather working gloves,” he said.

The softer ball means the hits are not quite as hard and don’t go as far as you think they might and the gloves are not as large as what is used today, so it makes for a higher scoring game.

Plus Krutz says, “Because we’re mostly older people who just play on the side, is going to make the game higher-scoring because of errors and things like that.

But, if you look back at box scores from the games back then, they were pretty high-scoring as well.”

When those games were played, it might have been on a hayfield that had just been cut that morning, not the perfectly manicured fields that we have today.

How interesting are these games for the fans, and how well-attended are they?

According to Krutz, they always bring out the crowds.

“Our area is pretty sparsely populated and the number of spectators we get for our games is pretty impressive.

We have hundreds, and sometimes close to a thousand if it coincides with another event,” he said.

“The people really like it.”

“You’re dressed up in period clothing, so you look pretty comical compared to what is worn today. That, compared with the slightly different rules makes it interesting for the fans.”

Krutz thinks that part of the reason for the success of these types of games is the nostalgic mood that is sweeping the country

and the simple old-time atmosphere that is created when they play them.

The games will be played at Veteran’s Memorial Field #3. “It will definitely be the nicest field we have played on, but there will be certain things we won’t be able to change. For instance, back then, the mounds weren’t raised, so we’re not going to change that.”

Even a local craftsman is getting into the act by manufacturing periodauthentic bats for the game.

Three teams will be coming to Little Falls for the event, and Krutz has put together a team from the City called the Little Falls Alerts, which is the name of a team that actually played here during that time-frame.

His long-term goal is to make sure that vintage baseball is here to stay and to establish a permanent Little Falls team. “There’s a team in Amsterdam that’s forming and wants more opponents to play as well.”

The goal is to get a roster of people who are interested enough in the game so that they can pull from it when needed.

They sometimes have umpires, who dress up for the occasion as well.

“We’ve had umpires that really play it up with top hats on and a three-piece suit with a cigar. I think

there would be a bunch of people in Little Falls who would like to play that role,” he said.

Game schedule: 10:30 am – Bovina Dairymen vs Little Falls Alerts 12:45 pm – Bovina Dairymen vs Mountain Athletic Club (MAC) 3 pm – Mountain Athletic Club vs Little Falls Alerts Each game will be 7 innings. 4 innings will be played under 1864 rules and 3 innings will be played under 1886 rules.

Each game also has a hard stop time of 2 hours with a

15-minute break between games.

During/between the games there will be an explanation of the rules of the era and how they differ from modern baseball.

“I think a lot of our parents and grandparents will enjoy watching us play again because we’ve become middle-aged men and they can watch us run around like we’re little kids again.

Just a lot slower and more careful,” stated Krutz.

Admission to the games are free, and the event is sponsored by the Little Falls Historical Society and the Little Falls Youth and Family Center.

Ward continued, saying “Growing up on a farm has been one of my life’s greatest blessings.

I wouldn’t trade it for the world. We did not get the chance to travel or go on vacation as kids, but we had so much more available to us than most people did, right in our own backyard. With over 100 acres as our playground, I knew every bit of that land like the back of my hand by the time I was in high school.”

Burnsy’s great grandfather emigrated from Ireland and bought the farm somewhere around 1860, and the Burns family has owned and operated the land for four generations.

Burnsy said, “I was the only one of five kids that were actually born on the farm in this house.

My mother never got to

the doctor in time, so Dr. Santry from Little Falls delivered me and he got here in time I guess.”

“Burnsy has always been a farmer at heart. He was raised on a farm and then bought his own dairy farm shortly out of high school after he married my mom.

They raised us four kids on the family farm until they could no longer keep up with the demands of the hard work and the low prices they received for milk. He sold the farm around the time we all went off to college, and eventually moved into his childhood family farm,” she stated.

Burnsy said, “Nobody was around, so I started running this farm in 1994.”

They were making hay on the farm, but also sweet corn, with the kids and his wife picking it each season. “I’ve done my

share of corn picking, but not just that. We had an acre of a garden, and I pushed the lawnmower back then, kept the house, and raised four kids,” said Tom’s wife of almost 60 years, Janet.

Burnsy said, “We try to grow the best super sweet corn...the right kind of super sweet corn.”

Janet said that he reads all kinds of books to stay up on the trends in corn.

It started because a neighbor came over and suggested that they both start growing sweet corn.

“I started out with Seneca Chief, which was the best corn ever in 1970, but then one came along called Silver Queen. That was a white corn, and that was the best corn ever. We grew that for like 20 years, and then all of a sudden, a couple of people came into my farm and said

He said that the Candy Store didn’t have the longevity that he had been used to. “The old saying goes that you want to be picking corn while you’ve got the water boiling because once you pick it, you’ve got about one day before it turns to starch.”

All of a sudden, he said that the companies that make seed started making corn that had no starch in them whatsoever. “It’s all sugar with a shrunken kernel and when you put that in the ground, you only have one week for it to go. Every kernel of corn has to die, decay, and shoot the spout. If you don’t have the right weather conditions and 65-degree soil, it will fail. If it’s 64, I go.”

He said that this year, on the 13th of May the soil was 63 and he decided to go. “It worked out great.”

Burnsy says that he plants nine different times, one week apart each time.

“You can’t just grow one crop and expect it to last six weeks,” he said.

The best part of growing corn, according to Burnsy is watching people eat it raw and then seeing the look in their eyes.

Janet said that there are different ways that people cook corn. “Some do a

microwave type of deal, putting an ear of corn in with the husk on for a minute and a half and then turn it and do another minute and a half.”

Burnsy said that he loves corn cooked in water.

“One of the best ways to cook corn is to take cold water, turn the burner on full blast, put the corn in cold, and when it comes to a boil, take it out. Most people wait until the water boils, and then cook it for ten minutes. That’s too long. Five or six minutes is enough if you are boiling.”

He said that other people soak it in a bucket of water for three hours and then put it on the grill. “That’s a nice way to do it,” he said.

“We don’t do it that way because we only eat a couple of ears a day.”

Burnsy said that Roger Morocco down the road used to eat eleven ears in one sitting. “I think he’s backed off a bit from that with his age, but he’s probably still good for eight or nine. That’s a lot of corn.”

Janet said, “There’s a lot of stories out there about how many people eat in one day.”

“Our objective is to keep the product as high quality as possible and sell it.

We sold it last year for $6 per dozen and nobody complained about the price because of the quality,” he stated.

M O H A W K He said that back when there were no super sweets, you would start out at $3 per dozen and by the time it was a week after Labor Day, it would be down to 50 cents per dozen. “With super sweets though, they want that quality and they’re willing to pay for it right up until the 1st of October.”

Rumor has it, that Burnsy has even received a medal for his corn. It’s something you’ll have to ask him about next time you stop up for a visit.

Burnsy is going to be 84 this year, but he said that at this point, “I’m not going to be giving up planting corn. I’ve gotta go for it. I love to do it.”

He’s not able to pick the corn himself these days, so he has some help on the farm. “Once you get these young kids, 15, 16, 17, trained how to pick corn, they’re very good.”

Burnsy said that one of them is so good that he can pick 500 ears of corn in half an hour.

His daughters stated that Burnsy’s passion for farming started at a very young age and that his passion for the business and life-long stewardship of the land is something to be admired.

“Unfortunately, many family farms these days end up being sold and the land divided for profit and new construction. We hope that he’ll be able to live out the rest of his life on the farm, doing what he loves.”

Rustic Ties - A hidden gem right here in Herkimer County

Heath Williams has created one of the most unique event venues in upstate New York, right here in Herkimer County.

People thought he was crazy when he built what he calls the utility building, right in front of the barn and pavilion.

“It was really by design.

What it does is, once you come in, that blocks off your view of the parking lot and the street. It also prevents the noise and light from bothering the neighbors on that side.”

He says once you get in there, your other view is pretty much nature.

“There’s nothing else going on, and that’s part of the design.”

It was a fateful time back in March 2020. The world was so unsure of what would happen in the coming weeks, and then in an instant, the world shut down. Theatres shuttered their doors and dimmed their lights.

Performers around the world lost their jobs, their hobbies.

Due to the COVID19 outbreak, all live theatrical productions set for 2020 were forced to come to a halt, indefinitely. However, with many of the COVID restrictions dropping the arts are coming back with a vengeance. In recent weeks many broadway, local, and high school theater companies have announced their return to the stage. Does this mean it’s time to strap on our nice shoes and hit the red seats? That’s exactly what it means, it’s time to go out and support local arts.

Little Falls High School was one among many

schools forced to cancel their musical last spring, saddening performers and viewers alike.

After months of hard work and time put into rehearsing, the high school’s production of Thoroughly Modern Millie was canceled the day before opening night.

It was thought that the show would never see the light of day, however, director Amanda Grimaldi has decided it is time for a revival. With the majority of the original cast returning ‘Millie will be coming to the Little Falls High School stage this summer.

Modern Millie was going to be one of her best productions yet.

The cancellation of the show left Grimaldi and all others who worked on it crushed, and broken-hearted. There were numerous seniors who thought they would never be able to perform their last high school show, an experience that is so important to high school theater kids.

There was a display of fireworks Sunday night. It is believed that the power dam will be selected each year as a camp for the scouts, as admirable facilities are at hand for the event.

POP dedicates bench to Ritz

Preserve Our Past (POP) had a dedication ceremony last Thursday night for a bench that was installed on the southside by the Little Free Library.

The idea was to thank Jayne Ritz for her many years of working and service to the community. Philomena Cerone with POP stated, “You’ve been a responsible homeowner and landlady, a preservationist extraordinaire and now we’re going to elevate you to the level of Frederick Law Olmsted.”

co-designing many wellknown urban parks like Central Park in New York City with his senior partner Calvert Vaux.

“I’ve had a wonderful time with preservation in the City of Little Falls. I’d like to think that over the years, we’ve planted the seeds, much like I’ve planted the seeds here. I would say to those people who are here and those who are

preservationists, that you have a lot of work ahead of you,” stated Ritz.

She went on to say that they’ve only just scattered a few seeds in this City about preservation. “You need to make it bloom, have some laws put in place, and you need to remember City

Hall.”

Ritz went on to say that she’ll continue to help in any way that she can, but that it’s time for new young people to get involved.

She said that they had asked her where she wanted the bench to go,

and she stated that she had chosen the spot. “It’s a wonderful place for people to come to the little library, get a book, and sit. This is very much appreciated.”

The Little Falls Rotary Club was a partner in the purchase and installation of the bench.

Southside walking tour brought back by popular demand Newly revised program Southside Walking Tour VII Growing Up on the Southside 1957 – 1970 This new walking tour will START and END at the Rotary Park Terminal Building on Southern Ave. This Tour will focus only on the area of the Southside, south of the Mohawk River and Barge Canal. If you took this tour in the past, and you could not finish beyond Casler Street or finished sooner, come hear the stories you missed!

The “Tour” will focus on

growing up on the Southside from 1957 to 1970, with a theme that was NOT “Leave It to Beaver” or “Ozzie and Harriet” or “My Three Sons”, but instead a very different and special experience. The history is about the places, the people, and the memories.

You will find some of the stories very entertaining!

Anyone with an interest in the Southside during the 1960s, or those from the Northside who never understood Southside people, or those not from Little Falls who married Little Falls Southsiders, or their adult children. Some “adult?” content or described behaviors may not be suitable for children.

If you are a photographer, you will find great opportunities for

photos in a variety of natural vistas, vegetation, etc. Bring your camera.
