Letter from the Chairman of the Board
Dear Friends, The year 2010 was one of growth and transition for Health Alliance for Austin Musicians. It was the first year without our founder Robin Shivers, but all of us continued to be inspired and guided by her vision for HAAM and helping Austin musicians. The Austin community’s generosity has enabled us to continue expanding our services and assist more musicians. In five-and-a-half years, HAAM has helped over 2,200 musicians. In 2010 we added The SEE Project with affiliate service provider Prevent Blindness Texas. On one day in June, 175 musicians had full eye exams at Eye Physicians of Austin. Each musician who needed glasses received a prescription and a voucher for glasses. We strengthened our relationship with The SIMS Foundation, and we continued our work with Seton, St. David’s and Estes Audiology. In 2010 we welcomed new board members Lisa Hickey and Liz Watson. The commitment and leadership by our Board of Directors coupled with the passion and drive of our Executive Director Carolyn Schwarz are the key reasons for HAAM’s success. Also, a key to success is the excellent leadership from other volunteers. Keith Carmichael chaired HAAM Benefit Day 2010, and Keith and his outstanding committee helped us have our biggest and most fun HAAM Benefit Day to date, raising over $195,000. The whole day was a wonderful celebration of Austin and our musicians, and I hope everyone will mark their calendar now for HAAM Benefit Day 2011, which will be Tuesday, October 4. Also, big thanks to Lisa Hickey and Dan Connolly, who co-chaired a very successful Corporate Battle of the Bands. It was a fun night at Antone’s as we listened to great music from eight different bands. This year the Battle will again be at Antone’s on April 28. We are also very grateful to Good Eggs & HAAM, a group of dynamic young professionals who support HAAM’s mission. Through their efforts and the leadership of Quinn Donahue, Scott Flack, Jackie Mooney and Clint Strait, they made a significant contribution to HAAM in 2010. As HAAM moves into its sixth year, it is time for the organization to “grow up.” HAAM is transitioning out from under the auspices of Austin Community Foundation (ACF). We are extremely grateful to ACF for shepherding us through the early years, and we are excited about the opportunities ahead as a stand-alone organization. Jennifer Stowe is our Director of Services, and with the transition out of ACF, we welcome Kristina Winters to the HAAM staff as Office Manager. With Kristina on board, Carolyn’s great leadership and Jennifer’s dedication and love for Austin’s musicians, I am confident that this transition will be seamless and that 2011 will be another great year for Health Alliance for Austin Musicians. It has been humbling to know what a difference HAAM is making in the lives of the musicians. When asked how HAAM is affecting his life, one musician told us, “I have quit smoking, I struggle to exercise more, and I eat a healthier diet. I drink less, and I visit the doctor more frequently. The most important change, however, is that I now feel more confident about myself and my life knowing that the community I grew up in supports what I do, and that my hard work in the arts is appreciated here. This new mentality has proven to be the most important one for me.” This work is only possible because of the generosity of the community and the amazing contributions of the affiliate service providers. Thank you for sharing your gifts to make sure that we keep music in Austin alive and well. Tim Taylor

“When I was discharged from the hospital, Dr. Kerr, my primary care physician at Seton McCarthy, had a big job ahead of her. I have to take medicine that keeps my blood constitution within a certain range. That requires regular blood work. Dr. Kerr and her team help keep me on track with my blood work and do so much more. I am fortunate to have Dr. Kerr as my doctor. I relate to her not only as a doctor but as a beautiful human being.”

“HAAM has helped me take care of things that I had to put to the side because I couldn’t afford them. The earplugs were something I wanted to do but never thought it would be possible because of the cost. Luckily, HAAM has The HEAR Project with affiliate service provider Estes Audiology. My hearing exam showed that my hearing is still pretty good, and now with the custom-fit earplugs, I will prevent hearing loss for years to come. In my industry, hearing is something you just can’t afford to lose.”

HAAM Benefit Day “Whole Foods Market is committed to each community where we have put down roots — and there’s no place we have deeper roots than Austin. When Whole Foods opened its doors 30 years ago, it set out on a simple mission: to provide a more natural alternative to the conventional grocery options available at that time. That mission still rings true today. When HAAM opened its doors five years ago, the mission was to provide access to affordable health care for Austin’s musicians, focusing on prevention and wellness. We support local causes that are aligned with our mission and core values and those that are important to our shoppers and neighbors, and the health of our musicians is important to all of us! So I encourage everyone to come out and shop on HAAM Benefit Day!” — Rebecca Scofield, Austin community relations, Whole Foods Market Whole Foods Market was the presenting sponsor for the fifth annual HAAM Benefit Day on Tuesday, September 21. HAAM Benefit Day is a city-wide celebration of live music and the talented musicians who make Austin and its culture so rich. It was a record-breaking day all around, with the largest number of Austin-area businesses making a donation or pledging a portion of the day’s proceeds — more than 200 — and the most musical performances (more than 140) heard on any HAAM Benefit Day. The result was the most funds raised to date on HAAM Benefit Day: $195,000! HAAM is incredibly grateful to the community for your support! Your contributions far exceeded the $10,000 matching grant from Texas Heritage Songwriters’ Association. HAAM is also especially appreciative of Whole Foods Market, which has made an incredible commitment to musicians’ health throughout the five years of this event. Underwriters C3 Presents, South By Southwest and ThunderCloud Subs also have been longstanding supporters of HAAM Benefit Day, and we thank you. One of the unique aspects of HAAM Benefit Day is the incredible artwork, and we thank GSD&M and Dale Minor for the support and creativity! HAAM invites all businesses, residents and musical acts to participate in the sixth HAAM Benefit Day on Tuesday, October 4, 2011. Special thanks to members of the HAAM Benefit Day 2010 Committee, including chairman Keith Carmichael, Mark Bellman, Lisa Hickey, David Jabour, John T. Kunz, Cathy Nabours, Nancy Nichols, Alison Silverstein and Diana Zuniga.

“I was on tour playing drums for a Texas country artist and took a fall off the stage as I was moving my gear. Because of the nature of the fall, my hip took the brunt of it. I continued to gig for over a month thinking it was just a sprain. It got to the point where I couldn’t walk was at

immediately and helped me get to an orthopedist, who determined I was suffering from osteonecrosis; my hip bone was dying. I needed a full hip replacement. This process required a lot of navigation, and Jennifer at the HAAM office was there for me all along. She really went to bat for me. Thanks to HAAM, Seton Family of Hospitals and all my doctors, including Dr. David Dogin, I will be rockin’ for years to come!”

“Before joining HAAM, I was diagnosed with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. I was in and out of the hospital and was forced to quit my band. I couldn’t breathe enough to keep up on my drums…. HAAM got me set up with Dr. Buttrey. She really cares about me, and I haven’t been back to the ER once! I can’t stress enough how grateful I am to HAAM. They allowed me to continue to play music.”
