Our Beginning Spring 2005
In spring 2005, Health Alliance for Austin Musicians was created with a noble yet challenging mission: to provide access to affordable healthcare to Austin’s low-income, uninsured working musicians. Three partners joined forces: SETON Healthcare Network to provide primary medical care, St. David’s Community Health Foundation to provide basic dental care and SIMS Foundation to provide mental health counseling. With a focus on wellness and prevention, the Health Alliance set forth to serve musicians who previously had to delay seeking care until forced to go to the emergency room — the most expensive kind of treatment. One year later, the program that sounded too good to be true is a reality!

Our Chairman’s Message Reflecting on our first year of operations, we are overwhelmed by the successes the Health Alliance for Austin Musicians has experienced: from the tenacity of our board of directors that worked at record pace to get this program up and running and the amazing response of our local musicians who access our services, to the generous financial support of our Founding Sponsors and the local community that has expressed its gratitude to the Health Alliance for keeping Austin “The Live (and HEALTHY) Music Capital of the World.” Musicians often work long hours and late nights, juggling several jobs to do what they love — play their music for appreciative audiences. These musicians are self-employed and do not have access to group insurance for themselves or their families. To pay for private insurance might cost more than a third of working musicians’ incomes, meaning they might not be able to pay for other necessities such as food and rent. Health Alliance for Austin Musicians offers these musicians a way to access preventive and primary care at an affordable cost. Within one year, the Health Alliance has: Enrolled 450 members. • Earned a 96 percent approval rating from members for quality of care and services. • Served more than 70 percent of members in the health clinic for wellness and prevention. • Raised more than $100,000 from the community to increase capacity. •
Thanks to all of you who have contributed to these successes! Robin R. Shivers Chairman of the Board of Directors Health Alliance for Austin Musicians HAAM member receives dental care.

“At its very core, the Health Alliance has a sincere desire to help musicians continue doing what we love to do, and that makes the services provided to me feel very sincere. Every visit to a clinic or specialty doctor, every time I say, “Ahhh” for a dentist and each time I interact with the HAAM staff, I know that the people making those services a reality truly care about me and the entire music community that has made Austin such an amazing place for all of us to live.” Nakia Reynoso, aka Vic Odin Singer-songwriter, The Small Stars
