9.13.22 Putting the live back in live music! myhaam.org

PNC Bank sees the value that HAAM provides to the greater Austin community, and we are proud to begin a 5 year partnership with HAAM, supporting HAAM Day and HAAM events throughout the year that will bring additional healthcare services to Austin musicians.

Please join me, PNC Bank, and hundreds of Austin musicians and volunteers at participating locations and help us reach our goal of raising more than $850,000. With your HAAM Day donations and support, HAAM will continue to expand services and meet the needs of Austin’s working musicians so our beloved live music scene can continue to thrive. Together, we can ensure Austin continues to be the Live Music Capital of the ThankWorld!youfor supporting the Health Alliance for Austin Musicians.

Dillan HAAMKnudsonDayCo-Chair and Regional Vice President, PNC Bank

HAAM Day has an ambitious goal of $850,000 this year, so your donations are imperative to the organization’s continued success! In 2005, Robin Shivers founded HAAM to address the previously unmet healthcare needs of low-income working Austin musicians. The organization was designed to leverage collaborations across community resources and between its musicians, healthcare providers, and the Austin community. These crucial partnerships are what makes HAAM Day so successful and such an important event across town.

DillanSincerely,Knudson, PNC Bank 2022 HAAM Day Committee Co-Chair a note from haam day committee co-chair, dillan knudson

Dear Austin Music Lovers, After nearly three years without open-to-the-public HAAM Day concerts, the entire PNC Bank team is excited to be a part of powering this year’s live and in-person HAAM Day. Since the onset of COVID-19, HAAM has successfully been able to pivot, and reinvent its longstanding signature fundraiser through virtual and broadcast platforms. This year we’re putting the “live” back in live music with a return to hundreds of performances throughout the Austin metropolitan area. Not only are our musicians an essential part of Austin’s cultural identity as a city, but also an important economic engine, drawing in 2+ billion dollars each year. HAAM is doing everything it can to provide assistance to musicians during these difficult times, including adding a focus on basic needs care. Austin’s artists already live in a very fragile music ecosystem … as our artists who make Austin ‘The Live Music Capital of The World’ continue to recover from the last two years of pandemic work stoppages. With continued uncertainty in the live music economy, the last thing we want is for HAAM members to have to choose between eating and accessing healthcare.

It is our responsibility as a community to give back to our local artists and provide them the support they need and deserve. And it’s our responsibility as Austinites to give back to the creative community which brings us joy and entertainment every day, 365 days a year. Engaging with organizations like HAAM helps foster and nurture Austin’s unique, creative culture, and take care of the musicians that make our city “The Live Music Capital of the World.” We hope that you will join us in supporting one of Austin’s most valuable assets - its musicians. Get out and shop, eat, drink, and enjoy live music on September 13, 2022!

On Tuesday, Sept 13, HAAM Day Powered by PNC Bank returns fully live and in-person for the first time in three years! From our anchor showcase at stores, lobbiesAustinAmphitheater,Moodytoiconicvenues, tobankandgroceryhundredsof Austin-area musicians will perform in support of HAAM, to keep music in Austin alive and well.

a note from the haam ceo: keeping music in austin alive & well

I was in my living room, but I had no memory. Then I recognized my partner, which was good. And then they put me in an ambulance and took me to the Thehospital.ambulance was not covered by insurance, but because I had HAAM this time around, when I was at the hospital, I was able to get all the scans and get medication. That took a while to sort out … getting the right medication. I did a bunch of follow-up ap pointments with a neurologist, including a PET scan, CAT scan, and an MRI. And it was all covered! That was all early in 2020, and I haven’t had any sei zures since. But the hospital bill … they were trying to charge me like $8,000 or something. I was like, man, if I didn’t have HAAM, I never would have been able to pay this. Or I’d be trying to pay it down for God knows how long. Insurance enrollment can be really difficult to navigate. But because of how HAAM and Foundation Communities work together on enrollment, I’m in the federal marketplace program that covers part of the insurance bill, then HAAM and its Central Health and Sendero partners assist with the rest … which makes it essentially free … which is amazing.

And so it happened again, about seven years later, January 26, 2020. Right before the pandemic started. I was asleep on my couch. And my girlfriend was there. I actually don’t remember anything. But apparently I woke up, and there were medics in the room. And the fire department had arrived. They were putting an oxygen mask on my face. It was like I was in the deepest sleep ever. As I woke up, I was really annoyed. I was like, “what’s Thehappening?!”EMSteam asked, “do you know where you are?”

Ten years ago, when I was in my twenties, I had just started touring with a band called Whiskey Shivers. We were making zero money, but having the time of our lives. One morning during that time, I remember walking to the store … and then I woke up in an ambulance. The paramedics said, “um, you had a seizure, dude!” That was my first one. They called it a breakthrough seizure. At the time I didn’t have HAAM. And so I just couldn’t afford any of the follow-up appointments, which would have included all these different scans.

- San Gabriel, aka singer/songwriter, James Bookert Paul CEO,ScottHealth Alliance for Austin Musicians

I talked to the neurologist and he said, “yeah, you should have come in here after your first seizure.” I explained, “I couldn’t afford it.” If I had done an MRI without insurance, it would have been nearly I$6,000.don’tremember the exact cost of it. It’s so expensive. There’s no way. I would have never gotten the MRI without HAAM. They don’t really know what’s causing the seizures. They know that I don’t have epilepsy and I don’t have a tumor. So I’ve just stayed on the medication for two years. But I haven’t had any seizures since, which is awesome. The silver lining of it is, it has re ally made me take mental health and exercise more seriously. It’s been a really positive experience. It’s weird to say there was a silver lining to it, but there really was. It’s easy to take your health for granted, especially when you’re healthy. I remember being in the neurologist’s office with my mom. She was super worried. Those neurologist appointments wouldn’t have been an option for me without HAAM. With the cost of living, and the cost of housing in Austin, without HAAM I think I would’ve been in medical debt indefinitely.

I am grateful to be a part of this organization and the wonderful community that supports keeping music in Austin alive and well. Thank you all, I cannot wait to see you on HAAM Day! meet san gabriel

As HAAM’s CEO, I find myself inspired by the thou sands of musicians supporting HAAM Day, including HAAM member San Gabriel (aka singer/songwriter James Bookert). James shared with us the story of his breakthrough seizures, his subsequent diagnosis and neurologist referrals. He makes it very clear that his healthcare journey would’ve been substantially different without the assistance provided by HAAM and its healthcare provider partners like Sendero and Central Health. Thousands of musicians have stories like thisstories that drive me and the entire HAAM staff to redouble our work in assisting Austin-area musicians in being as healthy as possible so they can thrive in their musical careers.
