LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR OF ADVANCEMENT Dear Country Day Families and Friends, 2021-2022 was a year with much to celebrate – not least, a new head of school, a new mission, and a return to normalcy after two disrupted years.

With a multitude of on-campus events resuming and Nighthawk spirits revived, the energy in the Country Day community was palpable. I’m happy to report that the positive momentum was also refl ected in our fundraising.

The Country Day Fund, our annual giving campaign, exceeded its target of $1MM, contributing more than $1.12MM to the operating budget. This was a tremendous demonstration of commitment from our community and in a year when inflationary pressure bit hard, these funds provided crucial support for our operations. Money raised by the Country Day Fund supports every aspect of the Country Day experience and we cannot overstate the importance of every gift we receive.

Of our 955 donors to the 2021-22 campaign, 116 made gifts at leadership level ($2,500 and above).

Many of our leadership donors increased their gifts this year and collectively this group contributed almost 72% of the total amount raised.

While significant in value, leadership gifts were dwarfed in number by those from our broad base of donors – approximately half of the gifts we received were $100 or less, almost a third were $50 or less. Collectively, this group contributed more than $250,000 to our fundraising eff ort and their giving made a signifi cant difference to what we could achieve this year.

The 2021-22 academic year was a strong year for net tuition revenue, annual fundraising, and summer camps; although these gains were off set by additional spending on salaries and benefi ts to support higher than projected enrollment and by signifi cant spending on capital projects that addressed deferred maintenance needs.

While the Country Day Fund is our most signifi cant annual fundraising effort, we also received many gifts directed for specifi c purposes. These gifts ranged from a bench saw to support our technical theater program to Lower School birthday books to Athletic Boosters’ donations and more. These donors are recognized in the Other Annual Giving section of this annual report.

Capital and endowment donations built on the support offered by our annual donors. Most notably this year, our campus has fl ourished. The early part of the year saw completion of the Brian J. Bortz Family Stadium, which was ready to host the opening home football game on August 20, 2021.

Landscaping of the area around the stadium and through the entryway was completed in the fall and spring. There is no question that the opening of this facility contributed to the positive community spirit on campus and changed the face of Country Day athletics. On behalf of the school, I would like to reiterate our deep gratitude to the families who made this project possible.

Our campus benefited further from a gift of almost $100,000 from a donor directed specifi cally to the immediate enhancement of our outdoor spaces. Work funded by this generous gift included removal of dead trees, extensive landscaping around the campus entry and driveway, removal and replacement of unsightly fencing, renovation and replacement of playground equipment, and return of the gravel lot to grass field. All these projects signifi cantly improved our outdoor environment, and we are grateful for the support offered by this generous donor.

Endowed funds, comprising gifts invested for the long-term support of the school, provide our fi nancial foundation and in 2021-22, 7% of our operating revenue was delivered by income drawn from Country Day’s endowment. Endowed resources presently stand at $30MM and provide approximately $1.3MM of support to the annual budget. While $30MM is an impressive number by any measure, Country Day’s endowment continues to lag that of its immediate peers and growing these important resources remains one of our greatest priorities. To this end, generous donors injected almost $600,000 of new gifts during the year. We are especially grateful to: • The Class of 1971, which celebrated the 50th anniversary of their graduation and commemorated the occasion by establishing a new fund for student scholarships.

• An alumnus of 1969 established a fund, also directed to student scholarships, which he seeded with a generous five-figure gift.

• An anonymous donor who gave over $300,000 to establish a fund to support faculty resources.

These tremendous donations are just three examples of the crucial support we receive from our parents and alumni community. We are deeply grateful for their continued commitment to Country Day’s students and teachers.

As we look toward the school’s centennial in 2026 and embark on a comprehensive review of strategy through this year, I am excited for what lies ahead and deeply grateful for a community that supports the school so generously. PARENTS GIVE TO COUNTRY DAY BECAUSE...

We give to Country Day because… we want our children to have the skills to succeed in a globalized world.

When Blanca and I [Dr. Blanca Riemann and Dr. Christopher Riemann] were born [in Mexico and Germany, respectively] there were three billion people in the world very many of whom were illiterate and lived hand to mouth. To get ahead and live the wonderful life we are privileged to, we needed to work hard, be ethical, and learn to read, write, and do some math. This put us leaps and bounds ahead of the overwhelming majority of our generation, globally speaking. Our hand-to-mouth contemporaries were keen observers and made sure their children went to school. Fast forward to today. Our kids were born with seven billion people in a globally interconnected planet and will compete with billions of children. Our kids are competing in a globalized world where distances are getting shorter, weekend trips to Europe or Asia are common – especially in the business world – and just reading, writing, and doing math are not enough to stay at the top of the pyramid. Our kids’ generation needs the soft skills that a next-level education provides to be competitive. Country Day provides that – critical thinking skills, analytic skills, communications skills, leadership, interdisciplinary thinking, integrative thinking, and socialization to name just a few.

Our family speaks multiple languages – a direct consequence of us being a product of a globalized world, and frankly, that’s not that unique at Country Day. At Country Day, there are many 20 | CCDS 2021-2022 Annual Report

We have all chosen to leverage a Country Day education to benefit our children because we see the value in a “next level version 2.0” education. Competition is a good thing. We live in a city with many excellent educational options, which tells you a lot about Cincinnati as a metropolitan area. Competition means that everyone has their A game on. Every year when we sit down to write the tuition checks we go through a rigorous process to vet the value proposition of a private vs. public education. We live in Indian Hill – a truly superlative public school system. In our family, results speak for themselves. And you can’t argue with success.

Our oldest (Nathan, Class of 2019) double majored at Johns Hopkins (biomedical engineering/Spanish) and will graduate in three and a half years this fall summa cum laude. He is already enrolled in the school’s 3+1 master’s program in biomedical engineering and is contemplating medical school and a combined MD/PhD. Our middle child (Michelle, Class of 2021) is a rising sophomore at Duke where she double majors in physics and electrical-computer engineering. Why? “Because it’s the hardest major there is at Duke,” she replies.

Our godson, Christopher, who lives outside Dresden, Germany, came to Country Day for a year as an exchange student. He was a mediocre student with mediocre ambition but killer aptitude. His lacking motivation was the result of the pedagogy he was offered in his excellent German high school, which made sure he understood his limitations. We hatched a plan for him to attend 11th grade at CCDS. His teachers encouraged him to ask questions and then lovingly and patiently answered those questions. He had a fantastic year and learned that his only true limitation was his own ambition. Christopher went back to Germany to graduate as valedictorian of his high school class. He will soon finish medical school at the University of Leipzig, where he is studying to be an emergency room physician. CCDS turned his life around.

Blanca and I are quite sure our kids would have done fine anywhere – thanks in large part to their own natural work ethic and good nature – but it is that extra level of “fine” that Country Day provides that will give them a path to continue living at the top of the pyramid in a world with eight billion people. So, every year, when the time comes to decide on whether our youngest (Alex, Class of 2024) continues at CCDS, we write the check. We donate – beyond tuition – to support the school’s mission for our kid and for his entire generation of kids.

There are a lot of school systems that still have not recovered from Covid. At Country Day, the teachers and administrators put in a Herculean effort to minimize the impact the pandemic had on our children. In a time when we not only had a global

Before Covid, during Covid, and after Covid, from pre-K all the way though Upper School, it was always clear that each child receives a personalized education from the get-go. Teachers are truly invested in and committed to every child’s success. We were able to accelerate our kids without skipping grades so they could stay with their socially appropriate peer groups but also stay academically challenged. When they needed extra support, committed teachers who loved their profession made sure they received it. Teachers partnered with us as parents, accepted and acted on our input, and professionally pushed back when we failed to see the bigger pedagogical picture. Blanca and I are super grateful for what the CCDS faculty have done for our family and our kids.

HOW DID YOU SELECT COUNTRY DAY FOR YOUR FAMILY? We moved into town as a childless, professional couple and started living the life of a young, hip recently married couple and that was fine and wonderful. Then we had kids and rationalized that public school was a good option for us, so we bought a house in a great public school system. When the kids started getting older and we started seriously looking at schools, a friend told me, “I know you live in Indian Hill and it’s certainly a fantastic school system, but you ought to interview at the independent schools. They are amazing.” To humor him, we did. Now all three of our kids are lifers at CCDS and we have never looked back.

SUPPORTING OUR GRANDCHILD IN EVERY WAY WE CAN

“We give to Country Day to support our grandaughter.”

Candace and Frank Koch have made it a priority to spend time with their grandchild, Emma Rainey ’24, since the day she was born. “She knows she can rely on us to be there for her and that is one reason why we’re so involved at Country Day – to support her.”

Candace feels that Emma has always thrived at Country Day, which is what motivates her and her husband to donate to Country Day every year.

“What is being done at Country Day with even the youngest students is remarkable. Since kindergarten, Emma has had opportunities to present to her parents, her peers, and to us. I think that’s one of the greatest things about Country Day – kids are given experiences to make them comfortable presenting in front of others. This has such an impact on so many areas of their lives. The kids have such composure and presence at such a young age and when Emma graduates, I know she’ll have gained the experience and perspective she needs to thrive in the next stage of her life.”

Candace and Frank don’t just support Emma by attending her lacrosse games, soccer matches, piano recitals, presentations, and events, like Grandparents Day. They also consistently support the school with their financial gifts because they believe the academics are exceptional and the extracurriculars are engaging.

“Undoubtedly, the academics are important – every year you see a progression that builds on the curriculum from the previous year – but we have also been really involved in her other school activities because we see the difference those experiences are making in Emma’s life. We want to support her in every way possible because we feel like the school does everything it can to support her as well. We just want to do what we can to make a positive impact on Emma’s life.”

For the Habibs, staying connected to Country Day is essential, which is why they continue to give. But they also recognize the critical role that Country Day education played in their daughters’ lives “It was important to us to be part of an independent school,” said Mitchell. “A good education plays such a significant role in the lives of young people as they pursue their dreams.”

Elissa added that Ilana won a Scholastic Gold Key Photography Award during her time as a Country Day student.

“The attention she received in class helped her grow into a photographer,” she said. “When she won that award, the response and support she received from Country Day was heartwarming and overwhelming.”

Their daughters were heavily involved in the theater program, so the Habibs joined the Arts Alliance and formed friendships with other theater parents.

“Just like our kids found lasting friendships at Country Day, so did we,” said Mitchell. “I think the best part of being Country Day parents was finding a group of parent friends. It was important for us, too, to feel like we fit in and to find our place at the school.”

“I have missed the community,” said Elissa. “Not just the other parents but the school too. The faculty and staff are the most caring people in the world. They work hard to make the school special.” The Habibs have now returned to the Country Day community —as grandparents. Sarah’s daughter started pre-k in the lower school this fall.

Paying It Forward to the Next Generation Mitchell and Elissa Habib have given to Country Day for the last 16 years. The parents of two Country Day alums – Sarah ’07 and Ilana ’11 – they felt compelled to start giving to the school years ago and do not plan to stop anytime soon.

“Simply put, we give to Country Day because Country Day was there for us,” said Mitchell. “It was a home for our daughters, and now we want to be there for Country Day. I see it as returning the favor and staying involved in the place that was our home for so long.”

“We give because we want other families to experience the friendships and the community we’ve had,” said Mitchell. “We want other parents to see their children have the success ours have had, and we want other families to experience the joy of progressing from Country Day parents to parents of alums to Country Day grandparents. Country Day made such a huge impact on our whole family.”

COUNTRY DAY IS LIKE A SECOND HOME

Eduardo, Alexandra, Andres, Alexia, and Andrea spend some quality time together cheering on the Reds.

“We are motivated to give back to Country Day because when I drop my kids off at school in the morning, it’s like I’m leaving them at their second home.”

Alexandra and Eduardo Vegas are from Venezuela, which is also where their three children – Andrea ’21, Alexis ’23, and Andres ’25 – were born. They moved when Andres was six months old and have lived all over the world.

“We first enrolled our kids [at Country Day] when they were young and then my employer transferred me to Panama for six years. When we moved back to Cincinnati, the day Ms. Bertsch saw Andres in the hallway she hugged him like she saw him yesterday. Who wouldn’t want that for their kids? For their family? It’s mind-blowing to see the level of personal attention the kids receive – they are recognized and respected as individuals with their own strengths and opportunities.

This is why we give.”

Although Alexandra and Eduardo believe the strong academic education their children have received at Country Day is critical to their future, they believe it is the values the school instills and encourages that make a true difference. And according to Alexandra, foundational to those values are the teachers.

“We contribute to the Country Day Fund to support the teachers.

The values are not in a textbook, they are in people. At Country Day, teachers are extended family members.”

And Alexandra said that being back together at events like CountryDate this past year was special. CountryDate will always have a special place in their hearts.

“Every CountryDate we get something for the kids – a signed baseball bat, a tour of a toy company – but one year we got a dog. Our dog “Spot” was a CountryDate dog. Alexia was having a hard time learning to read, which is not uncommon when you have exposure to different languages at a young age. When you learn to read in Spanish you memorize a combination of sounds but when you learn to read in English you speak out loud so it’s very different. Her teacher recommended we get a dog so Alexis could practice reading out loud to an engaged yet impartial audience. After a month or two, her reading had improved tremendously; it was incredible. Country Day helped our child read and gave us 10 years with an amazing dog. The school has been life-changing for us in ways we could never have imagined.”

INVESTING IN JOY Tara McMullen Hoffstetter is a dedicated mom, Country Day teacher, and donor. She shows up every day ready to teach and nurture Country Day’s youngest students, and she’s also given financially to the school for 17 years.

“I don’t know if everyone feels the same way, but I don’t think of it as giving or donating money; it’s an investment,” said Hoffstetter. “Everything I do for this school is an investment. I pick up trash in the morning while walking through the halls; I show up at sporting events; I work at summer camps and want to participate in these things because Country Day is my home.

This is my home away from home. I spend more time during my waking hours at school than at home, so I see it as investing in my home too.”

Tara does not just give her money and her talents as a teacher, she also gives in other ways, like volunteering for after-school events or auctioning off a night of babysitting at CountryDate.

“I believe you get back what you give in this world, whether it’s money or something else. Call it fate, karma, or good juju, but some good energy comes back to you. I feel that’s true for me here. It’s how people treat my son. It’s how people treat me.”

In addition to teaching, Tara is also a Country Day parent. Her son, Titan McMullen ’23, is an active member of the Country Day lacrosse team.

“Being on campus with my son is the greatest joy that I’ve been able to experience. I’ve seen that unfold in the last couple of years since he’s been in the upper school. To see him making his mark on this world and growing into an adult – I know Country Day was part of that. So if I can invest in this school to give other parents the same joy to see their kids grow like this, why wouldn’t I?”

CountryDate 2022 CountryDate is the school’s annual community gala, with net proceeds directed to the Country Day Fund. The event was held on Saturday, February 26, at TQL Stadium, the new home of FC Cincinnati.

It was a wonderful night, marked by theatrical spectacles and the chattering and laughter of over 300 guests, reveling in the chance to reconnect. In addition to those present, almost 200 more participated virtually through online donations, games, and a silent auction.

The event raised over $190,000 toward the Country Day Fund’s goal for the year.

CountryDate is a community event in every sense. It would not be possible without volunteers to plan, set up and tear down the event, the hundreds of donated auction items, donations of time and talent by our dedicated teachers, and the many cash donations received. Dan Hoffheimer ’69 has never missed a Country Day class reunion. He has also continuously given to the school since his graduation over 50 years ago. Spend five minutes talking with him and it is evident how much he cares about Country Day. “I loved my time at Country Day! The work was hard, but the quality education I got was worth it,” said Hoffheimer. “I loved my teachers so much; that’s what I remember the most. They set the groundwork for the rest of my life.”

“What I love about these reunions is that I still find myself making new friends with people I went to school with 50 years ago.

There’s a real loyalty among us Country Day alums. We have shared pride and affection for the school. Every reunion, I try to set an example for my classmates and encourage them to give back. I want my friends to say, ‘Look at Dan, if he can give like this, then so can I.’”

For Dan, that groundwork set him on a path that inspired him to give back to the school in many ways, including setting up a scholarship fund, the Daniel J. Hoffheimer ’69 Scholarship Fund. The fund’s purpose is to provide tuition assistance to students who might otherwise be unable to attend Country Day, focusing on supporting the school’s commitment to maintaining a diverse student body. The scholarship is open to students of color (including Black Americans, Native Americans, Hispanic Americans, Asian Americans, Pacific-Islanders, and people of Appalachian decent).

“I believe the key to maintaining a civil and progressing world is to strive for everyone to get a good education. That’s what I want to give young people – the opportunity to come to Country Day and receive a life-changing education.”

But it’s not just the academic education that changed Dan’s life.

The friendships he made – and still have to this day – have impacted him in ways he never would have imagined decades ago.

Endowment + Capital The foundation for the school’s ongoing financial security is provided by the school’s endowment, comprising more than 65 individual funds. These funds are built through cash gifts made to the school over many decades. The majority of our endowed funds, designated by the original donors, are used to fund student tuition awards, provide faculty resources, and support the development of specific programs.

On June 30, 2022, the school’s total endowment funds were valued at $30,548,266. Despite cash gifts of $594,647 during the year, this represents a 7.8% decrease since June 30, 2021, driven by the net-decline in equity markets over the year.
