Writing these “Notes” each issue is pretty awesome. It’s kind of like journaling; only sometimes I get letters back. That’s pretty amazing don’t you think?

Last month we had a lot going on.

We planted our straw bale garden and it’s looking wonderful… My husband and I were able to get out of town for a much needed vacation.

However we were greeted upon our return to the airport with some sad news - a death in the family, which was sudden and unexpected.

Since then I have crossed paths with a grief counselor, a poet who helps others deal with loss, and several caring friends who just happen to be “there” at the right moments to give a hug or just some wise words. The poet (a complete stranger that I met just today) says that we connect with the people we need, to help each other through every challenge.

So this sudden and unexpected loss makes me want to ask you a question? Are you ready? Do you have a will or a trust in place? Do you have unresolved discord in your life that just could be let go? Have you told your people that you love them? Don’t think you’ll do it later.

Do it now. Lets not be one of those who are totally unprepared. To get an overview on wills and trusts, read about estate planning on page 29.

If you need a smile, why not read about this months “Rising Star” on page 10? McKenna Miller is a super star on the volleyball court, but I noticed this young lady at a middle school honor roll assembly several years ago, when she exhibited such caring and friendship to another student that I have never forgotten it. What a great example she is to others!

You know I can’t wait to introduce you to another of your fabulous neighbors… Lela Llorens is one of those people I so admire! Read her story on page 20 and see how she has never missed a second of life!

I love her positive attitude and how she continues to share her knowledge and skills with others.

I hope you find a little inspiration in these pages. And remember, your story could inspire someone too. Who will you be? What will you do?

TAxeS can be… well, taxing.

It’s something unavoidable that comes every year; and yet there are always those that bury their head in the sand, like an ostrich, in hopes that April 15th will pass them by. Luckily there are a few dragon-slayers that actually enjoy navigating the chaos of income taxes. One such person is William Smith (Bill) of Smith Marion & Company.

When Bill, along with his colleague and friend, Dave Marion, started their firm in 1982, they forged a solid foundation. Over the 30 plus years they’ve been in busi-

ness, Smith Marion & Company has grown to include additional partners and offices in Murrieta, Grand Terrace, Redlands, Lake Arrowhead, and even a branch in Tennessee.

Not wanting to pay the government is an understandable sentiment, however, sometimes it can be counter-productive. At Smith Marion & Co, they understand the three primary reasons why you spend money. Bill has been doing taxes for so many decades that he is now filing taxes for some of his original clients’ children and grandchildren! One of the things Bill loves about his job is building lasting friendships with his clients. Often times, people will need emergency documents in one day and the Smith Marion team always comes

through. Once, Bill received a letter claiming he was his client’s “Hero.” It’s not every day a tax accountant gets such a lofty title!

When asked what the secret to his success is, Bill’s eyes sparkle as he says, “I truly love doing taxes.” He pauses, “and I vacation often. My wife sees to it.” He and his wife have a vacation rental in

What could be better than going to Italy to play your favorite sport for several days? Well, for McKenna Miller, it was being named the BeST HITTeR in the international tournament! McKenna’s club volleyball team was one of only 91 teams from around the world at the competition and the girls were thrilled to place second. It’s no wonder this Murrieta Valley High School junior was signed to a college team just after her 10th grade year.

Those who watch her play are usually amazed by her ability to jump so high. She attributes this to genetics, since her mom used to jump in track. Although McKenna “digs” the intensity of playing club

volleyball, she really loves playing on the high school team, where there is less pressure.

Honored as the best offensive player at the last MVHS Volleyball Banquet, McKenna has taken it upon herself to work more on her defense to be a better all around player. When McKenna started playing 5 years ago, she didn’t get a lot of playtime, but she learned quickly that dedication and hard work really made a difference.

“I’ve had to sacrifice a lot of things to play volleyball, but doing so has given me so many amazing opportunities and allowed me to play volleyball at my dream school after I graduate,” McKenna explains excitedly. Her “dream” school is the same college her mom graduated from: Brigham Young University.

“McKenna has natural athleti-

cism, is competitive, and is not shaken by pressure situations,” says her mom, Heather. “Though we are her biggest volleyball fans, we’re more proud of the whole person that she is,” adds, her dad, Ryan. Both of McKenna’s parents are pleased that she is also service oriented, kind, creative and quick-witted.

Making sure others feel included is something that comes naturally to McKenna, whether it’s on or off the court. In Volleyball, McKenna always tries to learn everyone’s name on the Freshman, JV and Varsity teams so that she can cheer them on by name. Off the court, McKenna’s attentiveness to those with special needs has earned her some very extraordinary friends.

It will be interesting to see how this remarkable young lady develops her gifts and talents as she finds her path through college and beyond.

The Circus Girl

went to the circus on opening night to interview Mariella Quiroga. She is 17 years old and she is a circus performer. When I met her she was wearing a bright costume and her makeup had sparkling jewels. She was very nice and looked happy, so I thought maybe I would like to be in the circus.

Mariella performs in the circus with her 12-year-old sister, and her cousin, who is 16. They dance and wear pretty costumes. She and her

She loves to draw and dance. She's not sure what she wants to be when she grows up yet, but after attending the circus recently, she's considering being a performer in the circus. ;)

A lyra looks like a hula hoop that hangs in the air. Mariella’s first performance was when she was 6.

She worked for another circus and she got to do an act on the elephant!

Mariella is the 8th generation of circus performers in her family. Her mom, dad, uncle, and cousins still perform. Her grandma used to do the high wire and she still works for the circus selling concessions.

10 months out of the year to entertain people. When they are away from their homes, they live in an RV. Mariella still has to do homework and chores like cleaning her room, doing the dishes and helping with laundry.

I think it would be fun to be in the circus. Maybe you get to eat free snow cones and cotton candy.

I would like to be a funny clown because they get to do jokes and be crazy.

Fatigue ne of the most common complaints people come to me with is fatigue. After ruling out heart and lung problems, anemia, blood sugar issues, and sleep apnea a typical primary care physician may tell you that you’re fine. Integrative practitioners will look further.

Low thyroid is often missed. “Normal” lab values are not the same as “optimal” lab values. Typically with low thyroid you may also see dry skin or hair, constipation, and a difficulty losing weight; plus fatigue. Typically you will have fatigue in the morning and again mid afternoon. Low thyroid is easy to fix with a prescription of a natural thyroid replacement.

Adrenal fatigue is also a common problem. Your adrenal glands help your body respond to stress and can easily get overloaded in today’s world. Some other symptoms you may notice are low blood sugar, salt cravings, and a fatigue that never goes away.

To manage stress, schedule some time on your calendar just for you. epsom salt baths are great; or try the Float experience in Temecula for a real treat! Try unplugging from electronics and the outside world one day a week, Hatha yoga class, meditation, or deep breathing exercises daily. Avoid toxic people and situations (when you can) and watching the news.

Dehydration can cause fatigue and tends to make you overeat. A good rule of thumb is to drink half your body weight (pounds) in ounces. For example, a 150-pound person would drink 75 ounces of water per day.

Have a purpose in life that drives you. Consider volunteering, leaning a new skill or sharing one of your hobbies with a friend. If you are “stuck in your head,” we’ve had many patients who have experienced success with hypnotherapy.

The important thing here is to pay attention to your body. Being tired all of the time takes away quality of life. If you notice a change, don’t just tell yourself you’re getting older…. Take action!

imagine the supper clubs of the ‘50s and ‘60s… people didn’t

go in just for dinner: these social clubs were considered a

“destination.” Guests would come in for cocktail hour, enjoy

an elegant dinner served with artistic flair, and finish up with cabaret-style entertainment.

Supper clubs became popular after the prohibition, when the first liquor licenses were granted to establishments outside of city limits where food was served. As they evolved, they typically presented a high-class image donning linen tablecloths, serving fine cocktails and presenting an ever-changing lineup of entertainment. This was just the kind of stage where you could catch a performance by Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr., or Dean Martin.

While there are few of these original supper clubs still in operation across the US, a new generation of these clubs has been noticed popping up from New York to L.A. Plans are in progress to open one supper club right here, in Temecula.

The Cuvée Club (pronounced Coo-Vay) revives the cabaret aura and supper club sophistication, with a unique mix of classic and contemporary American cuisine.

Managing Partner, Collin Rand explains, “A dining experience should not just be about top quality food. It should be about the memorable experiences.” Collin has paid careful attention to creating the right atmosphere for the club. His strength in training high-end wait staff will mean excellence in service, while guests find enjoyment in so much more than a fantastic meal.

Having also worked in the entertainment industry, Collin developed his ideal of an exceptional experience during his time working for Disney entertainment Productions at the Disneyland Resort in Anaheim. Here he also learned the magic behind quality service!

of Success ur wonderful neighbor, Lela Llorens, grew up knowing that she could do or be anything she wanted if she was willing to work hard, thanks to her dad. Although she could have looked at her African-American heritage as an obstacle, her upbringing instilled her with confidence and a positive attitude.

Additionally, being a part of the Girl Scouts taught her to always “Be Prepared.” Lela learned in her youth to look at each situation with composure and calm, a mindset that has served her well throughout her life.

Lela’s passion for education and desire to keep moving forward have propelled her to receive several degrees including a Bachelor of Science in Occupational Therapy, a Master’s Degree in Vocational Rehabilitation, a Doctorate in Philosophy and a Certificate in Gerontology. “I chose Occupational Therapy as a career because I thought I would enjoy helping people–children and adults–build or rebuild their lives following illness and/or disability,” she explains. worked as an occupational therapist for 18 years helping children and adults with developmental, mental and physical disabilities before becoming an academic faculty member. Over the next several decades she served on the faculty of several universities from Florida to California.

At the time she retired, over 18 years ago, Lela had been serving as the Associate Academic Vice President for Faculty for San Jose State University. With a career that spanned 50 years, Lela took satisfaction that she left every department that she was a part of better than she found it. Upon retirement, Lela and her husband, Joe, decided to move to Southern California where they could be closer to their daughter. They began looking in the Temecula Valley and soon discovered Murrieta where they settled.

Lela became involved with the Friends of the Library right away while she continued as a consultant to the Occupational Therapy Department at the USC. With the passing of her husband she knew it was time to get more involved in

her community. She now serves as the Vice-President of the Friends of the Murrieta Library.

As a widow of nine years, Lela has found the Murrieta Senior Center to be a vital part of her life.

“It has been a great place to meet people and make friends. The openness, acceptance, atmosphere and the activities available are exceptional,” she emphasizes. Lela participates in an exercise group, a writing group and a book club and says there is something for everyone. She believes this involvement is important in continuing to live a happy and healthy life. Lela also takes great comfort in her spirituality. “My faith keeps me going when times are tough,” she shares.

It is such a joy to count amongst our neighbors such an accomplished woman. Though she gives much of her time to volunteering locally, to this day Lela continues to mentor younger colleagues in the field of Occupational Therapy and education. What a great example of making life worthwhile.

went to the circus last month where I was able to interview 17-year-old, Nicole Weiss.

Nicole is a dancer for Circus Vargas.

I was able to get an idea of what a circus performer’s life is like. She’s lived in Las Vegas for one year. Her parents, Jon and Laura Weiss, are also in the circus. She has two siblings ages 15 and 20 who are not in the circus. Nicole is also homeschooled and because of all her traveling. She loves traveling and performing for kids of all ages.

exciting. Thousands of people of all ages come to watch her. When Nicole grows up, she wants to be a dancer or a hula hooper.

Other than being in a circus, Nicole is a normal girl. When she isn’t performing she goes to the mall, hangs out with her friends, goes to the movies, and ice skates.

Nicole’s friends compliment her on her dancing. Nicole also likes to watch people hula hoop and would like to get better at this skill herself.

“You can never be too good at anything,” she says.

Performing, hanging out with friends and family are the things that make Nicole happy. Nicole’s favorite acts are the wheel, the trampoline, and the foot juggling. Her favorite costume is her finale one which is white. She does all of her makeup herself. Nicole practices her performances one hour every day after school. It really shows! If you missed the show this year, I highly recommend a trip to Circus Vargas next time they are in town!

Does my Insurance Cover That?

ental insurance benefits can cause a great deal of frustration and confusion for some patients. If your employer offers dental insurance, consider yourself fortunate. This benefit works like a valuable “coupon” that can greatly reduce the costs of dental care. However, no dental benefit plan is set up to cover all of your costs.

Almost all dental plans are the result of a contract between your employer and an insurance company. Your employer and the insurer agree upon the amount your plan pays. Your dental coverage is not based on what you need or what your dentist recommends. It is based on how much your employer pays into the plan. employers generally choose to cover some, but not all, of

their employee’s dental costs. If you are not satisfied with the coverage provided by your insurance, let your employer know.

Insurance plans usually pay a higher percentage, often 100%, on procedures that are considered preventative and diagnostic, such as exams and cleanings. Basic restorative procedures, such as fillings, may be covered at 80%, while major restorative work, such as crowns and root canals, may only be covered at 50%.

Some dental insurance plans do not cover conditions that existed prior to enrollment. One example is a “missing tooth clause” which will not pay for the replacement of a tooth that was missing prior to the beginning of coverage. even though your plan may not cover certain conditions, treatment may still be necessary to maintain your oral health.

Some plans set limits on certain procedures and those procedures may not be covered by your insurance as often as they are dentally necessary. For example, some patients may need dental cleanings more than the two times per year that their plan allows.

Often dental insurance plans will only cover the least expensive treatment possible. For example, many plans only cover the cost of mercury amalgam silver fillings instead of tooth-colored composite fillings. The least expensive

alternative treatment may not be the best choice for optimal dental health. Patients must keep in mind that insurance companies help to offset costs, but treatment decisions should be made with their health in mind.

If you need dental care that falls outside of your plan benefits or at a time when you have reached your maximum allowance, you should talk with your dentist to decide on the best course of action with your specific concerns in mind. In order to avoid future dental complications that could require more extensive (and expensive) treatment later, patients should seek treatment in a timely fashion. The best decisions on your oral health can be made once you gain a thorough understanding from the person who knows your conditions best: your dentist. After exploring treatment options, possible outcomes of delaying treatment, and any concerns you may have, your dentist can help create a plan specifically for you to help achieve optimal oral health.

or many, the mind stays sharp as long as it continues to be challenged and the trend of retirees working and living longer proves just that.

Take Hugh Lyman, for example. When he retired, this small business owner pursued a long-standing passion as an inventor. Fascinated with the possibilities of using 3-D printer technology, he felt the expense of the plastic filament used was too high. So he developed his own version using lower-cost plastic pellets, cutting the cost of the material from $40-50 a kilo to $5. Apparently the cost of the original material was inflated due to a patent, so he invented his own workaround.

Sometimes it takes a good bit of work experience to understand that there are alternate ways of achieving the same goal.

However, not all retirees can afford to quit work and pursue their passion. One recent study asserted that the decline of company retirement benefits is a primary factor keeping older employees working longer than ever.

At age 70½, individuals can no longer make traditional IRA contributions, but they may continue Roth IRA contributions as long as they are earning income from a source other than a pension, annuity or required minimum distribution (RMD). If they work past age 70 for an employer with a 401(k) plan, they may continue contributing to

the 401(k) as well and avoid required minimum distributions.

Then again, for many retirees the question isn’t whether to work longer, but how they can preserve money once they’re out of the workforce. Many affluent professionals who made their fortune in a high tax state such as New York or California, are now fleeing the state in order to enjoy the fruits of their wealth and avoid paying these high taxes. While many retirees choose to migrate to Florida or Texas, (states with no taxes on retirement income), some choose to stay closer to home.

Still other retirees are joining and starting new virtual retirement villages. In an effort to live independently as long as possible, these organizations charge members an annual fee in exchange for access to resources and social connections that help them continue living in their own homes. As part of the growing social network economy, these entities are cropping up all over the country. According to Village to Village Network, which helps manage these villages there are presently 140 villages in 40 states. Instead of seniors moving into one specific community, they may live in their own houses yet tap resources that their peers use, such as lawn care, dog walkers and even shared social activities. The organizations use social media sites such as Facebook, Twitter and YouTube to stay in touch with members.

As our nation is headed to a future with a large population of seniors, either working or living in retirement, we seem to be a solid part of this network in which we can help solve financial, leisure and social challenges.

The Citizens’ Police Academy, headed up by Corporal Matt Mozingo, is designed to increase public awareness and understanding of the Police Department’s operations. Those who live or work in Murrieta and are over the age of 21 are invited to this FRee ten-week course (which meets once a week).

Citizen students will be taught by an expert panel of department personnel in the topics of patrol tactics, criminal investigations, S.W.A.T., police canines, narcotics, crime free

“The objective of the Citizen’s Police Academy is for students to gain an overall knowledge of the Murrieta Police Department.” multi-housing, neighborhood watch, dispatch, traffic enforcement, use of force and other many other related fields. Students will ideally have the opportunity to participate in practical demonstrations, simulations, and attend a ride-along with a patrol officer during the academy.

The next academy is scheduled to begin August 26 to November 4, 2015. Applicants must successfully pass a background check and have no felony convictions, outstanding warrants, or pending criminal cases.

The objective of the Citizen’s Police Academy is for students to gain an overall knowledge of the Murrieta Police Department, its organizational structure and how it continues to provide nationally recognized service to the community.

Although the subject matter is similar to that of a traditional police academy, the purpose of the Citizens’ Academy is strictly for public education and to enhance and foster a strong relationship with the community.

an Introduction to Wills, Trusts, & Probate

What do Jimi Hendrix, Heath Ledger and Sonny Bono have in common? Aside from celebri-

ty status none of these celebs were ready to leave this life so soon: all died without a will. In fact, rock legend Jimi Hendrix’s estate was held up in probate for over 30 years, and 20 of those years the estate was controlled by an attorney! 37 years after his death, Jimi Hendrix’s estate was still held up in court. Why? Because he didn’t have a will and people lined up to get what they felt was their share of his wealth. And yet this is not out of the ordinary.

I met with a man who owned two successful businesses, had three adult children, two teenage step children, a home, and a rental property.

He had just been diagnosed with cancer when we met and he con-

fessed that he hadn’t really prepared for something like this. He had no will or trust in place. Luckily for his family, it wasn’t too late, but many people do not have this kind of “notice.” Preparation is so important to providing direction and preserving assets for your family.

Your estate includes all of your property and possessions, land, money and other things that you have full or part ownership in. If you pass away without a trust or a will, your estate will pass down to your heirs. Heirs are classified by their rank, title, and position in relation to one another. The order by which your heirs will inherit your estate is set by state statues. While heirs are being identified and their classification for inheritance is being determined, your estate remains untouchable in probate.

California has “summary probate” for estates with a gross value under $150,000. All other estates must go through full probate.

This can get very expensive as the costs and fees are set by state law (a percentage of the gross value of the estate). An estate that gets hung up in probate, like the Hendrix estate, wastes time, is expensive and often results in families fighting over assets.

A will can be used to provide instructions for distributing your estate. Having this legal document can shorten the time that your estate

is held up in probate, save money, and eliminate potential feuds. In California, you can create a handwritten will, use a fill-in-the-blank form, or have one prepared by an attorney. Whichever you choose, it’s a good idea to consult with an attorney to discuss options and get questions answered.

Other estate planning tools, such as a trust, can eliminate probate entirely, saving time and money.

The most common kind of trust is a revocable living trust. The revocable trust allows for the property to be removed in the future, meaning you can make changes over time.

A trust can also be irrevocable where the property is transferred into the trust, and belongs to the trust, not you. An irrevocable living trust has distinct benefits such as keeping your assets away from potential creditors, Medi-Cal planning, and reducing the amount of estate taxes owed. A pour-over will, paired with a living trust, automatically transfers all of your property to your trust when you pass away.

Having a plan for your estate does so much more than reducing time and costs of probate, it preserves something far more important… family relationships. Don’t wait until it’s too late! Talk to an attorney to review your specific situation and create a personalized plan for you and your family.

Paws 4 Law was founded in 2012 by local residents and business owners, and is dedicated to supporting the Murrieta Police Department K9 Unit.

Rock & Roll for Crohn’s & Colitis

On November 15, 2015 the Rock and Roll Marathon Series will go to Las Vegas. Local resident, Jennifer Abbott, has chosen to run this event alongside Team Challenge, a non-profit organization that works with CCFA, Crohn’s &Colitis Foundation of America. CCFA is a non-profit, volunteer-driven organization dedicated to finding cures for Crohn’s Disease and Ulcerative Colitis.

Both are Inflammatory Bowel Diseases, about 1.4 million Americans are affected. Jennifer’s best friend was diagnosed with Crohn’s 12 years ago and her cousin Ryan was diagnosed 10 years ago.

Jennifer has teamed up with the locally owned, Tavern Grille, in Murrieta for the second consecutive year to help raise awareness about Crohn’s & Colitis Disease. The Fundraiser will be held on Sunday May 24th 2015 from 2-9p.m. The Tavern Grille will donate 15% of all proceeds to CCFA, in addition Wendy’s Taxi (another local business) will be donating 25% of all fares going or leaving the Tavern that day. The Whiskey Brothers will be performing from 4pm into the night and Ballast Point Brewery will be doing a tap take over. We will also be raffling off prizes with 100% proceeds going to CCFA. Come on out for a night on the town and support this worthy cause.
