Join in the fun at the Sip and Savor Sept. 4 at 370 Lakeside Park The Greater St. Charles County Chamber of Commerce is excited to host the 16th annual Sip and Savor St. Charles County Taste Event. This year’s event is once again open to the public and everyone attending can satisfy all of their senses for one ticket price and listen to live music.

Sip and Savor will host local restaurants waiting to dish out their finest. Attendees will spend the evening sipping wine or brews while sampling zesty barbecue, gourmet pizza, delicious pasta, sweet treats, and so much more. Try what you like or try it all. Organizers are expecting a copious number of area residents and a vast array of food and beverage vendors to enjoy a delightful evening of fun, food, and drinks while listening to live music.

“Sip & Savor is a great event to showcase local restaurants, wineries and pubs in the Greater St. Charles County area,” said Wendy Rackovan, the chamber’s vice president of marketing and communications. “There is no better way to sample the fare of some of St. Charles County’s most heard of venues – all for one price.”

Local entertainment, provided by Rhythm Music & Performing Arts Studio of New Town, includes: Solo artist Mariah Broeker, and The Eric Prewitt Trio.

“Each year, Sip & Savor grows and

becomes the most talked about event to end Summer. This year will be no different. With over 42 food and beverage booths, no one will go away hungry. We have such a wide variety of restaurants participating, we’ll have something for everyone to enjoy,” said Rackovan.

SafeWise Report Lists O’Fallon as one of the Safest Cities in Missouri The SafeWise Report released its “50 Safest Cities in Missouri” report this week and O’Fallon is listed as number 17. To compile this report, SafeWise used the most recent FBI crime data from 2012 to analyze and rank these cities, which all have a minimum population of 4,000 people.

The second largest city on the list, O’Fallon quickly grew from a quaint railroad town to a booming urban hotspot in merely two decades. O’Fallon’s proximity to St. Louis combined with being the home of MasterCard’s Global Technology and Operations Center has turned the town into a popular spot for commerce.

Today, O’Fallon has everything you could want out of a city from multiple well-groomed parks to an independent Frontier League baseball team. And, of course, a top notch police department that has helped O’Fallon rank at the top of CQ Press’ safest cities in America list multiple years in a row and make sure that if you visit this booming city you’ll have a less

than one in 1,000 chance of falling victim to a violent crime.

SafeWise Report looks at crimes from part 1 of the FBI Unified Crime Report (UCR) reported crime data, which focuses on violent crimes (aggravated assault, forcible rape, murder, and robbery) as well as property crimes (arson, burglary, larceny-theft, and motor vehicle theft).

From there, they calculate the chances of these crimes happening out of a thousand in order to level the playing field for cities of varying populations. From all the cities in Missouri, they narrowed the list down to 50 and assigned rankings according to data provided by the FBI’s UCR report.

“These civic-minded communities look out for one another,” SafeWise security analyst Rebecca Edwards said. “With only seven of our top 50 cities having more than a two in 1,000 chance of becoming a victim of violent crime there’s no arguing that these civic-minded communities know how to take care of their home.”

Top-Rated Emergency Response Training to be Offered by City of St. Charles School District’s Adult and Community Education Program The Adult and Community Education program, through the City of St. Charles School District is once again taking extraordinary strides towards community preparedness. As part of the FEMA Youth Preparedness Council’s efforts and America’s PrepareAthon during National Preparedness month this September, they are offering an Adult and Teen Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) training course. The course is designed to teach students how to prepare for and respond to every type of emergency without putting themselves or others at additional risk, and assisting local emergency services and responders in and around the St. Charles area, in case of an emergency or disaster.

The training is being delivered by Mid America TEEN CERT, to anyone who is at least 12 years old. Mid America has been presented with numerous prestigious honors, including being recognized as the top preparedness training program in Missouri four years straight. The program has a five year waiting list for the training, and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, school districts, faith-based and other organizations request Mid America’s training year-round.

The goal of CERT training is to teach students in basic response skills and then integrate them into their area’s emergency response capability. If

a disastrous event happens that delays or overwhelms the community’s professional responders, trained adult and teen CERT members can assist by applying the response and organizational skills learned during training to help save and sustain lives until help arrives. These same skills also apply to daily emergencies.

Classes will be held at the Lewis & Clark Career Center, located at 2400 Zumbehl Rd. in St. Charles, beginning Saturday, Sept. 13 and continuing five consecutive Saturdays through Oct. 11. Each class will run from 8 am until noon.

Once training has been completed, students may request to become part of their municipalities’ individual CERT programs.

Key areas covered during the course are overall disaster preparedness, fire safety and utilities, disaster medical operations, search and rescue, team organization, disaster psychology, special needs considerations, and terrorism. The course ends with a disaster simulation exercise, designed to test hands-on through a practical, comprehensive skills learned throughout the course.

Ted Trent Studios and Circa 87 will hold open call auditions for their new movie shooting in the midwest next summer. The film, which is still untitled, will center on the theme of sports.

The auditions will take place at 13 Wehrenberg Theatres during the first two nights of the run of Belleville, the locally-shot movie about a farmer and his friendship with an out-of-this-world stranger.

“We are so excited to find more talent in the midwest,” says Ted Trent, the star and producer of Belleville. “We anticipate lots of people showing up to share with us their passion for sports, acting, or fulfilling a lifelong dream to be in a movie. Yes, I said sports!”

“We look forward to seeing people of all shapes, sizes, ages, and races,” says director Dan Steadman. “This will be

fun for the community, and a terrific opportunity for my team to scout new talent for next year’s movie.”

The auditions will happen simultaneously, with casting directors on hand in all 13 cities from 4 to 7 pm Friday, Sept.

5, and noon – 4 pm Saturday, Sept. 6. Participants need not be professional actors.

This event is open to anyone in the community, of any age, who would like to talk about his or her love of sports–or perform a monologue of their choice. “You can tell an interesting or funny story about playing a sport or simply make up something to share about the subject,” says Trent. “You might even want to tell us how you aren’t good at sports. Remember, it’s acting!” adds Trent.

Participants are asked to limit their auditions to 2-3 minutes in time. Auditions

will be held largely on a first come, first-seen basis. However, priority may be given (at the casting director’s discretion) to people who have a ticket for the film Belleville.

“We wouldn’t want anyone to miss their audition, or the movie,” explains Steadman.

“The only way we get to make another movie next year is if the community really turns out to see Belleville.”

Saint Charles Riverfront Arts to Host Riverfront Dance Festival Saint Charles Riverfront Arts (SCRA) is hosting the inaugural Riverfront Dance Festival event on Sunday, Sept. 7 at the New Town Amphitheatre in the New Town Development in St. Charles.

This public dance festival for the St. Charles County community is scheduled to begin at noon, and will feature dance companies, studios and organizations from across the St. Charles and St. Louis area.

Community Loving Care Hospice’s T-shirt Fundraiser Raises over $9,000 Staff members at Community Loving Care Hospice in Wentzville helped raise money during the month of July by participating in a T-shirt fundraiser for The Hospice Promise Foundation–a nonprofit organization established by national healthcare provider LHC Group to assist hospice patients and families struggling with essential non-hospice related expenses.

The Hospice Promise Foundation set a goal to sell 500 shirts in the month of July to raise funds to assist hospice patients and their families during particularly trying times. Thanks to the support of agencies like Community Loving Care Hospice, the program surpassed that goal and raised more than

$9,000–enabling The Hospice Promise Foundation to provide even more assistance to those who need it most.

Community Loving Care Hospice is part of LHC Group, a provider of post-acute care services with 10,000 employees operating more than 300 locations in 25 states.

Hospice professionals provide the emotional, spiritual and medical support needed when patients are facing the final stages of life. Hospice services help patients live comfortably, with dignity, when a cure is no longer possible. Veterans’ Commission Hosts Benefits Fair The O’Fallon Veterans’ Commission is sponsoring a benefits fair for local veterans and their families.

The event, which will feature booths and presentations from local businesses, will be held from 10 am to 2 pm Saturday, Aug.23, (doors open at 9 am) at the O’Fallon Municipal Centre, 100 North Main St. in O’Fallon. Admission and parking are free.

The benefits fair will focus on providing information and dedicated discussion sessions on health and veterans’ health care, resumes and job hunting, job training, veterans’ benefits, personal finance, obtaining a home loan, educational opportunities and more. Specific topics and issues include how to make sense of job application systems, how to build social profiles on networks such as LinkedIn, and how to improve your credit score.

“We want this to really be an all-encompassing day of education and discussion for our local veterans,” said Councilman Rick Battelle, O’Fallon City Council Liaison to the Veterans Commission. “We have partnered with the Veterans’ Commission and some of the best companies and educational sources in our metro area to ensure that we can give our veterans the information they need as they assimilate back home or move on to the next phases of their lives.”

Representatives from local veterans groups also will be at the event: VFW Post 5077, Vietnam Veterans of America Post 458, AmVets Post 106, American Legion Post 388, and Korean War Veterans of America. Senator Claire McCaskill’s office also will provide a field representative who can meet with veterans and their families from 10 am – noon.

Halloween “Howl for the Homeless” 5K Run Sts. Joachim and Ann Care Service will host its third annual 5K and 1 Mile Fun Run/Walk, themed “Halloween Howl for the Homeless” at 9 am Saturday, Oct. 25 on the campus of Charles Community College.

Costumes are encouraged and prizes will be awarded to the best costume in numerous categories.

Local Pub Takes it to the Greens On Monday, August 4, Tilted Kilt of St. Charles, a local sports pub that pays homage to the old public houses of America, England, Scotland and Ireland, hosted its first annual golf outing at The Links at Dardenne. 144 golfers were in attendance and Tilted Kilt successfully raised over $10,000 dollars for Hope for Young Adults with Cancer.

St. Pierre has been part of the Lincoln County Bancorp team for eight years serving as Vice President of Loan Review before being promoted to the role of President. In many ways, however, Into the Storm exploits real-life tragedy. The characters mention the twister that hit Joplin, Mo., a few years ago. The folks who lived through that particular disaster will find little to like about this film. Who wants to see computerized twisters after watching their homes and families devastated by the real thing?

Overall, this film is a colossal waste of time and money. Director Quale introduces one or two good ideas, but it’s impossible not to think of the superior Twister. With that one, Jan de Bont knew that good characters top special effects every time. Hopefully, Quale learns that lesson for future projects.

Into the Storm, rated PG-13 for sequences of intense destruction and peril, and language including sexual references, currently is playing in theaters.

Born and raised in South St. Louis, Steve Bryan is now based in Anaheim, California, and has been allowed access to movie and television sets to see actors and directors at work. Though his writing has taken him far from St. Louis, Steve is, at heart, still the same wide-eyed kid who spent countless hours watching classic movies at neighborhood theaters.

facebook.com/mycnews Bradford and Rams Impressive Against Packers The St. Louis Rams played their second exhibition game last Saturday with the stands filled with a lot of Green Bay fans. The visiting Cheeseheads had a pleasant ride home back north as the Pack won the contest 21-7.

Quarterback Sam Bradford played the entire first quarter at the helm for two offensive drives.

He completed 9 of 12 passes for 101 yards, and one touchdown for a rating of 127.4. Bradford, playing in his first game since his surgery to his left knee, was right on the game plan to throw to as many players as possible. His targets included WR Tavon Austin and TE Lance Kendricks—who each had two receptions, while WR Brian Quick, RB Zac Stacy, TE Cory Harkey, TE Jared Cook and WR Kenny Britt had one reception a piece.

Kendricks was the recipient from Bradford for an 11 yard touchdown, the only score of the game for the Rams.

Bradford commented on the score, “To be honest, we’ve called that play quite a bit in training camp and I’m not sure the ball has ever gone there. But, it was just a look where their safety was playing outside and Lance did a great job of getting around the ‘backer and inside the safety and he made a great catch because that’s not an easy catch.”

One major injury to the roster was running back Isaiah Pead who is lost for the season with a tear to his ACL, suffered after a run back of a kick without really making contact with anyone. * Great start

A Belgian shares his story in Macadoo of Maury River, the fictional tale of a draft horse by Gigi Amateau, the second book in the Maury River series.

Though Belgians, the gentle draft giants, were historically desired for their strength, Macadoo’s father warns him their breed isn’t of much use any longer. “The world has almost forgotten us,” he says.

At times, that seems to be the case, as Macadoo faces trials and mistreatment at auctions, sold more than once to the highest bidder. When Macadoo finds a loving home with Izzy and his grandfather, fate intervenes and the Belgian again wonders what will become of him.

Grill Lean for Great Taste

Take advantage of the longer, warmer days before winter arrives by whipping up tasty grilled meals that are delicious and healthy for the whole family. Using lean cuts of beef is a great way to cut down calories and fat, but it doesn’t have to reduce the grilled flavors you love.

For the best results when grilling, choose quality meats that are 92 percent lean or higher, naturally raised and contain no hormones or antibiotics, to ensure you are packing in flavor without harmful ingredients. Grilled Steak Fajitas Start to finish: 2 hours and 30 minutes | Servings: 8 Ingredients: 1 pound Laura’s Lean Beef ribeye steak (may substitute strip, sirloin or flank) 1 teaspoon black pepper 1/2 teaspoon cumin 1/2 teaspoon chili powder 1 green bell pepper 1 red bell pepper 1 medium-hot Poblano pepper, dark green and triangular 1 medium yellow onion 8 fat-free flour tortillas Directions: At least two hours before dinner, dust steak with freshly ground black pepper, cumin and chili powder. Let it sit in refrigerator so flavors can penetrate meat.

Cut peppers into large segments, discarding ribs and seeds. Chop onion into thick slices, making sure not to pull rings apart.

Place peppers and onion slices on grill over medium heat; cover and roast by turning frequently until covered with dark spots, but not burnt. Remove from grill and allow to cool, about four minutes. Pull off waxy-papery skins of peppers and slice crosswise into strips. Break onion slices into rings and mix with peppers in serving bowl.

Things I Don’t Understand Since everyone knows how much I hate broccoli, it’s number one because I don’t understand why anyone buys it when poison ivy is free. Some others are as follows: I don’t understand…

- Why mid-summer rain waits until my grass is dead before it pours down….and I don’t mean a sprinkle that wouldn’t grow a dandelion but makes my car look like it needs a Clearasil treatment.

- Why traffic comes to a halt on the interstate just after I clear the on ramp and have no place to get off unless I’m driving an army tank and crash through the perimeter fence.

- Why Congress listens to complaints about income tax from kazillionaires who pay 14 percent but ignore middle income working folks who pay twice that.

- How anyone can eat hot wings that burn holes in their tongues and then mumble how great they tasted while chewing ice cubes.

- Why parents would buy their testosterone-tainted teenager a motorcycle with the capability to reach speeds of 180 mph and expect him to live past puberty; the parental desire to depopulate the household notwithstanding.

- How teenagers can borrow the family car and return it with just enough gas left for mom or dad to back it out

of the driveway.

- Why teenagers text each other when they’re standing two feet apart.

- Why the air-conditioner waits until it’s 110 degrees before it croaks or the furnace quits when it’s 10 below.

- Why doctors leave me in the waiting room with flu patients sneezing wetly and then transfer me to a treatment room where I wait until the sneeze germs infect my lungs or their tee-time nears, whichever comes first.

- How the greasy, pock-marked parolee working at the discount oil change and midnight auto supply can tell my car needs an air filter, tires, battery, windshield wipers, radiator hoses, fan belts, brake pads and U-joints 30 seconds after he figures out how to open the hood.

- Why my car is the only one on a crowded parking lot that birds use for a toilet.

- Why I bothered parking my car in the farthest space to avoid door dings only to return and find a rusted out pickup truck with multiple beer bumps parked next to it.

- Why hail storms only happen before I put the car in the garage.

- Why someone pays big bucks to a weight loss spa but burns 20 bucks worth of gas driving around a parking lot looking for the closest space.

- Why people in 500 dollars worth of Adidas sweats are out jogging for exercise while illegal aliens mow their lawns.

- Why bankers went from making loans to people who didn’t need one to people that shouldn’t get one.

- Why birds ignore the fancy birdhouse in the neighbor’s yard and nest in my dryer vent.

- Why a guy in a pickup truck drives normally until he hooks a trailer on the back and turns into Evel Knieval in a make-believe semi going 90 in the monster lane.

- Why traffic cops ignore pickup trucks going 85 in the passing lane pulling trailers carrying four-ton tractors and ticket the hybrid roller skate they’re tailgating.

-Why someone who keeps three slavering, 90-pound barking dogs in a one-bedroom apartment is a member of PETA. -Conversely, why would someone with a yappy, anklebitting cur the size of a sewer rat with the disposition of a werewolf think it’s cute? Maybe if Copperheads grew fur…

-How new stadiums make ball players win more games.

-Why Cardinal reliever Trevor Rosenthal can terrify batters with 100 mph fast balls while the Cards lose 1 to 0...?
