Be Safe With Electricity Cuivre River Electric Cooperative reminds area residents to be aware of the dangers of electricity while working outdoors this summer. Cuivre River Safety Coordinator Doug Bagby stresses, “Play it safe with electricity. Accidents involving power lines usually happen when someone doesn’t take the time to look up and observe the whole situation.”

Cuivre River offers these important safety tips to help make summer more enjoyable: •Look up for power lines before installing a satellite dish, antenna, making roof repairs, trimming or pruning trees, or using long-handled tools.

•Be sure to fly kites in open areas away from power lines.

•Check outdoor electrical outlets for protective weatherproof covers and be sure GFCIs are operating properly by using the test button.

•Always carry a ladder horizontally. Before setting it up, check to see if power lines are located overhead or nearby.

•Be alert and watch for power lines when operating tall machinery or equipment outdoors. Adjust machinery or equipment to the lowest position before moving.

•Never attempt to move or raise a power

Before you start a digging project, contact Missouri One Call (1.800.DIG.RITE or 8.1.1) or www.mo1call.com. As a free service, an underground utility locator will visit to mark power lines and other utilities that may be buried nearby. Use extreme caution when using a shovel or other digging tool. Call to find out where underground utilities are buried to avoid hazards and keep vital services (electricity, telephone, water and sewer) from being disrupted.

An important step to ensure safety around boat docks and swimming pools is to include ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) protection. Make sure the GFCI is professionally installed to prevent shock, electrocution and injury. Boat owners should have dockside electrical systems installed by professional electricians guided by the National Electric Code and have these systems inspected regularly to avoid tragedy. Boat wiring should be in compliance with American Boat and Yacht Council (ABYC) standards.

Wet environments are particularly dangerous when it comes to electricity. While regulations may vary by location, electricity-related drowning can be prevented by regular inspections for ground-fault failure and by strict enforcement of the National Electric Code through frequent inspec-

tions of pools and docks.

Missouri law requires that your electric utility company be notified when working within 10 feet of a power line. OSHA expands that zone for cranes and construction crews to notify the utility if the work is to be done at 20 feet or closer to a power line. Cuivre River Electric Cooperative will assist with your underground and overhead power line safety requests and concerns.

“Just use common sense when working around power lines. Look up and survey the scene around you,” adds Bagby. “Also make sure to contact Missouri One Call before you dig to avoid hitting a buried power line.”

1st Annual Eliminator Mud Run Are you tough enough to help Crider Health Center eliminate barriers to healthier lives? If so, make plans to join the Crider Health Center Foundation and Young Professionals Board of Directors at the 1st Annual “The Eliminator” Mud Run on Saturday, August 17. The event will help raise awareness about the barriers many in our community face finding access to quality, affordable healthcare and raise funds for the programs and services provided by Crider Health Center.

“We are excited to be bringing The Eliminator Mud Run to our community,” said Shaunna Shaw, development associate at Crider Health Center. “This event provides Crider with an exciting opportunity to break down the barriers and obstacles that prevent the most vulnerable members in our community from receiving the healthcare they need to live fuller, more productive and healthier lives.”

Although the healthcare industry has come a long way, there are still many barriers that need to be addressed. Some barriers to healthcare include: the stigma that accompanies certain ailments such as mental ill-

ness, the lack of providers in rural areas, the cultural beliefs and behaviors of patients in need of treatment, the growing lack of access to healthcare insurance, and for those living at or below poverty-the inability to pay for healthcare services or being forced to choose between a medical/dental appointment or purchasing groceries for their family.

“Crider Health Center exists to serve those in our community facing the barriers of healthier lives,” said Shaw. “The Young Professionals Board of Directors is hosting The Eliminator Mud Run to raise the necessary funds to ensure that Crider can continue providing healthcare services and programs

to those in our community who need it most—when they need it most.”

National Night Out On the first Tuesday in August, Wentzville residents can celebrate National Night Out. On that night, residents are invited to turn on their porch lights, go outside and join with their neighbors in block parties, cookouts, flashlight walks, and other activities to send the message to criminals that residents are organized and fighting back against crime.

National Night Out is designed to heighten crime and drug prevention awareness and generate support for local anticrime programs, such as Neighborhood Watch.

ALWAYS AN ADVENTURE

Alaskan Ride III

Avalanche is a functional illiterate who left the St. Louis area three decades ago in search of adventure. He enjoys motorcycling and all things outdoors. He lives with his wife and dogs.

Last month’s installment detailed a wet, soggy motorcycle ride through British Columbia with a stop at the legendary Liard hot springs.

Day after day of riding in rain proved to have consequences.

Gear remained soggy. The bikes were constantly covered in filth; keeping all that chrome shiny— normally an obsession—took on a much lower priority. Dirt roads were slick. Many miles of the highway were under construction, a near-constant occurrence where the pavement was constructed just a few feet above the permafrost. At one worksite, the traffic flagger warned us to be careful, and said that over 30 motorcycles had been dropped over the last few days on that stretch of road due to the bog-like mud.

We made it through without incident, wallowing and skidding from side to side. The conditions made really bad pavement seem decadently luxurious.

One of the worst products of that much moisture was the ubiquitous and hated mosquito. They were bad in British Columbia, and became a constant scourge through the Yukon and later when we made it into Alaska. There’s a reason the dreaded pest is known as the “Alaska State Bird.” They’re everywhere, and capable of inflicting serious damage. Clouds of the bloodthirsty

parasites surrounded one at all times. Unprotected flesh quickly became covered with a winged, stinging carpet of the little vampires. Accounts from the early miners and pioneers (a hardy bunch, not prone to whining) inevitably describe the consternation of even the most stoic of individuals in the face of such a menace.

Setting up camp became a frantic exercise.

Leaving the leathers and helmets on, we would get all our gear off the bikes and organized. We would set up the tent without unzipping it. Then, with all the gear in hand, one of us would quickly unzip the tent door while the other threw in the necessary camp supplies. As soon as the gear toss was complete, the door was quickly zipped up. Getting ourselves in and out of the tent was a similar exercise, with the action resembling the rapid choreographed precision of a pit crew during a race. Any unnecessary delay would result in clouds of the buzzing pests getting into the tent, requiring several minutes of slightly gratifying extermination by smashing them in any manner possible.

Answering the call of nature was frequently conducted outdoors, with facilities being few and far between. The hungry beasts seemed to be able to quickly identify normally-covered flesh, and zeroed in on the most inappropriate spots to satisfy their blood lust, leaving the victim to later awkwardly scratch at some embarrassing areas.

As unpleasant as the mosquitoes are, they

are part of the foundation of the food chain. The birds that feast on them are numerous and plentiful. They in turn feed the predators up the food chain, the foxes, coyotes, wolves, and bears. Of course, those predators “donate” blood back into the beginning of this chain, as the mosquitoes siphon off the beginning of the next cycle.

Making our way up into the Yukon Territory (YT), we went through the town of Watson Lake, where a “signpost forest” had begun during the road’s construction during WWII. Tens of thousands of city and street signs adorned this makeshift shrine to the towns where visitors had come from. Later, we went across a halfmile-long bridge with metal grate decking which was difficult to traverse on a bike.

Riding over the metal grating made the front tire squirm around and the handlebars shake. Adding to the feeling of insecurity was that looking down through the bridge decking, we could see the river below.

“Grate-ful” to be off the bridge in Whitehorse, YT, we decided we wanted to spend the 4th of July in the United States. We took a turn off the Alaska Highway toward the Alaskan town of Skagway. Situated on the coast, the road dropped out of the mountains and down to the sea. Festivities were typical U.S.-of-A. 4th of July events, which made us feel at home after being on the road for a few weeks. After spending the 4th in the U.S., we headed back up into the YT and continued north.

We saw a huge grizzly bear alongside the road near Kluane Lake, a reminder that while above the lowly mosquito, we were not at the top of the food chain here. We continued on into Alaska and headed up to Fairbanks, the first somewhat large city we had seen in weeks.

Next month: Circle City and Denali National Park.

Cindy Moore

Cindy Moore is the mother of three superlative kids, servant of two self-indulgent felines and wife to one nifty husband. Her ficticious occupation? Archeological Humorist: someone who unearths absurdity and hilarity in strange and unusual places including public restrooms, the lint filter, and church meetings.

Most recently, she excavated a find in her neighbor’s bird feeder.

I lost my cell phone the other day. It fell out of my pocket in my backyard as I uprooted a particularly thick, weedy patch, which borders an even thicker, wooded lot— a no man’s land. Things have entered there and not returned.

It’s rumored that Jimmy Hoffa and Elvis are wandering around aimlessly in that dense forest. If they were thinking, they’d have carried smart phones with them, accessed Google Maps and been out by now. See why it’s called dense forest?

I searched and searched. I called from my husband’s cell hoping to hear it ring. No luck. I had put it on vibrate.

My link to the world was suddenly shut off.

Why, you might ask, would I have the need for my phone out there in the jungle?

First, it is vital that I am accessible to my people.

My husband may need to ring me from the kitchen demanding to know why I bought creamy peanut butter instead of chunky or my son may find it necessary to transmit an urgent YouTube video featuring a 35-pound tabby named Bacon Bits, playing banjo.

Secondly, I need my phone because it contains valuable apps.

I have an app for the current weather report—to know if it’s a good day to weed. It was. A GPS app, in case I venture too far out into the woods and need to find my way back. If I run into Jimmy or Elvis, I’ll bring them along— if there’s a reward. I have a Google app to search “poisonous weeds” in case I develop water balloon-sized blisters on my arms from the funny three-leafed plants I have yanked up.

Sadly, I do not have the app to find a lost phone.

I am stuck.

So when it goes missing, the world spins off

its axis. It is my brain in a box.

Yet, for being so brainy, it sure seems to lose itself enough.

How did we ever find things in the old days, such as husbands in the store? Did we actually have to make a plan; synchronize our watches then choose a specific point to meet at? What prehistoric organizational skills we were forced to use. Torturous!

I vaguely recall those times utilizing the grocer’s loud speaker, “Attention Mr. Moore.

You have been declared lost. Please return yourself to the courtesy desk.”

Now we simply wave each other off, go our way and know we will meet up with the push of a button.

It goes like this: Ring, ring.

“Hello,” I say.

“Hey,” my husband says. “What aisle are you on?”

“Speak up, I can’t hear you.”

“I said what aisle are you on?”

“Louder. Some rude jerk behind me is yelling into his phone and I can’t hear a word…”

I turn to face the jerk—my jerk.

He speaks face-to-face while still on his phone, “I got the ketchup.” He wags a bottle at me.

“No, no. Wrong kind. Put it back,” I say.

“Ketchup is ketchup,” he says.

MOORE ON LIFE

A is for App “Ketchup is not ketchup!” I yell back louder into my phone.

A lady passes by and says into her phone, “What aisle? Louder. I can’t hear you; some jerk is yelling about ketchup into her phone!”

Maybe we are all too attached to our mechanical devices. *** It is now twilight. I have gone a full five hours without my phone. My text fingers have atrophied. It is only a guess as to the number of YouTubesgone-viral I have missed. I have needed to Google twice. Do you have any idea what it’s like to have the urge to Google and not do so? I can only compare it to being seriously constipated.

I venture out into the darkened woods in one last attempt to reunite with my phone.

I have snagged my husband’s cell and make a hopeful call.

There, in the black of the woods, a bright shaft illuminates heavenward. The spirit of Jimmy or Elvis? Perhaps, but no…something more miraculous: my sweet little connection to the world. One call and my phone lit up the blackness under the thickest of bushy bushes like a beacon summoning me.

I plop down, relieved but exhausted.

I don’t need an app—I need a nap.

How Tony Soprano Changed Television A few years ago, I was filming the Emmy Award-winning TV movie Cinema Verite. I was lucky enough to be cast as a tennis player on a shoot at a country club. During a break from filming, I walked by a familiar-looking gentleman with a thick beard. Within a few seconds, I had mentally removed the beard and realized that I had just encountered James Gandolfini on set.

When I heard the news that Gandolfini passed away this past June, I immediately began to reminisce about the day I got to work on his movie, and I thought about the end of his outstanding career.

Gandolfini’s defining role as a mobster changed men in television forever. Now, shows like Dexter, Breaking Bad, and Mad Men, all feature flawed lead men that viewers can’t get enough of.

Without the historical success of The Sopranos, it would be much more difficult to imagine the success of these shows and their leading men. Each of these shows features a leading male character that has major flaws (specifically in their actions) that we should disapprove of, yet we immediately become so invested in these iconic leads that we cannot wait to see how they’ll end up (or if they’ll try to change their ways).

It all began with Tony Soprano…

TONY SOPRANO, played by James Gandolfini in The Sopranos, was introduced to us back in 1998, a family man who runs his own business to provide for his wife and children whom he loves and cares for. His flaw is that he is in the mob business: He is the mob boss. Tony is a complete mixed bag of a character that people easily became invested in: we loved watching how he juggled both his business and personal life, which was divided by a line that was too thin. Our guilty pleasure was witnessing how he continued to keep his family together, yet away from all the dirty business and extreme violence he was involved with for a living. An even guiltier pleasure 8 CROSSROADS AUGUST 2013

was seeing which deserving (or undeserving) character we’d came to know got ‘wacked’ next.

DEXTER MORGAN, played by Michael C. Hall in Dexter, was introduced to us in 2006 as a likeable Miami forensics specialist. His problem? He’s a serial killer by night, disposing of those whom he believes have escaped justice. He has an uncontrollable urge to ‘fix’ that injustice every chance he gets. Our guilty pleasure comes from the suspense we crave as we watch to see how and if Dexter can get away with his next killing without any of his colleagues (including his sister) finding out, all while a real serial killer is usually on the loose each season.

DON DRAPER, played by Jon Hamm in Mad Men, is an extremely talented ad executive in New York City during the beginning of the 1960’s. He’s extremely polite, professional and has a soft spot for sweeping women off their feet. His flaw is that he’s an occasional big liar and is a playboy—which doesn’t sound that bad until you realize that (SPOILER ALERT!) at the end of the pilot episode, we meet his wife and children. We keep watching Mad Men because we are invested in Draper’s mysterious past that keeps unraveling as we also wonder how much longer he will keep lying to his family to keep them whole. We are also shocked by how women are treated and humiliated by men in this era.

WALTER WHITE, played by Bryan Cranston in Breaking Bad, is a high school chemistry teacher in New Mexico who’s been diagnosed with terminal cancer.

Since he’s only been given 2 years left to live, he turns to a new career of manufacturing and selling methamphetamine (the dangerous flaw we witness him choosing) with one of his former students in order to help secure his family’s future (he has a wife and a son with cerebral palsy). We’re glued to this show because we sympathize with his situation and we’re anxious to understand how a working man’s morality can be altered from the knowledge of his own future fatality—not to mention how many people will be hurt or killed during this dangerous operation.

Things to Do the Week Before College

The wait is almost over. In just seven days, your first semester of college will begin. Before you sit down in that first class, here are fifteen must-dos to guarantee you the best possible semester: 1. Figure out where you’re going and how you’re going to get there. Your college experience will be off to a bad start if you discover on the first day that there are no spaces left in Lot 32 or that the bus doesn’t stop at Lincoln Street and Nebraska Avenue. Always have a Plan A and a Plan B in regards to transportation. And while you’re at it, figure out where your classes are going to meet. You wouldn’t want to show up at 411 Old Main, only to find the class is at 411 New Main.

2. Figure out where you’re going to eat. Are you going to be taking lunch to classes, hitting up the dining hall, or going back to your dorm or apartment to eat? And what about Sunday nights, when (for who knows what reason) the food service in the dorms is closed? Hey, you can’t do this college thing without proper nourishment.

3. Plan an exercise routine. Colleges invest gazillions of dollars in world-class exercise facilities. Go over to one of them, pick up a barbell, and imagine yourself doing this three times a week. (At least you’ll have a sound body in which to preserve your sound mind.)

4. Get some proper beverage equipment. Almost every lecture or discussion section will go better with a piping hot caffeinated drink. So hoof on over to the local superstore or coffee bistro and buy the biggest spill-proof stainless steel thermos you can find.

(Non-coffee-drinkers should consider tea, vitamin water, or whatever your favorite non-caffeinated beverage is.)

5. Buy the tomes. Get the list of required textbooks from either your college bookstore or online course page. Then check out prices at both brick-and-mortar bookstores and online sites (including marketplace and book-renting sites).

5-Star Tip: For all book modalities (print, e-, and rentals), check out the aggregators (sometimes called meta-sites): These are websites that compare the prices of many other bookselling websites. 6. Start calendaring. Get a good electronic or print calendar and start entering your time commitments right away: when your classes meet, when you plan to study, what the assignments are, and when they’re due (often, these dates can be found in advance on the course web page). Some e-calendars we like are Google Calendar, iStudiez, AirSet, 30 Boxes, and iCal (for Mac). Of course, if you have an iPad or iPhone, do your calendaring there.

7. Get some apps. If you’re one of the 100 million or so people worldwide who own an iPhone, you’ll want to get some apps especially tailored to college. Some we like include: • iStudiez Pro (organizing your schedule) • Pocket Lists (to-do lists) • Evernote (note taking) • Wikipanion (Wikipedia) • Mental Case and Flashcards++ (flashcards) • Chegg (study help) • Graphing Calculator (just like the handheld model, and includes screenshots) • The Chemical Touch (periodic table) • Instapaper (stores web pages) • iTranslator (translations for your language courses) • Dictionary.com (lots of words you don’t know) • Blackboard Learn (hooks up with your school’s course management and grade reporting system) • My GPA Calculator (includes “what if” scenarios so you can fantasize about getting an A in that killer statistics course)

8. Get the word. You’ll need a password to access the university portal (which is where you’ll find course web pages, library e-resources, your enrollment status and grades, and online registration in semesters to come). Get it now if you can; if not, take the time to think of a secure password. Also take advantage of your

free university e-mail account: Professors will be happier getting papers from jeremy.hyman@ucla.edu than from jeremythestud@mondohotbodies.com.

9. Visit the books—including the electronic ones. Make your way over to the library and see where the books and journals are shelved. And while you’re at it, look at the electronic resources at your library’s home page. See how the databases and e-resources are organized (many college web portals have very useful “top 10 lists”) and imagine yourself actually using them. With any luck, you will.

10. Scout out the services. When you have some extra time, take a self-guided campus tour and check out the various “offices”: advising center; writing center; math and computer labs; tutoring center; and centers for nontraditional students, first-generation students, international students, single parents, and veterans. Hey, who knows, you might actually want to use one someday!

11. Find yourself a cave. You won’t want to spend much time during the semester trying, then retrying, all kinds of study places. Figure out where you think you’ll study best, then christen this place as your study spot. Maybe it’s a lounge in your dorm, a secluded corner of the library, or even your own desk.

12. Rein in the folks. Set some limits on your parents, especially if your dad—or mom—is the type who’ll be texting you the two hours a day that he or she isn’t calling you. Also, up the privacy settings on your Facebook page if your parents err on the side of intrusive—or if you think you’ll have stuff going on that you don’t want to become a family affair. You might prohibit them from post-

ing messages on your wall or tagging you in family photos—or refuse to “friend” them altogether. (Of course, if they’re paying for your college and they know the ins and outs of Facebook, your folks might not be all that happy about your banning them from your page—so use your best judgment!)

13. Meet the prof. For the really bold, there’s the visit to the professor’s office to find out a little more about the course and distinguish yourself from the nameless masses. Don’t be put off, though, if the professor is too busy to visit with you (he or she might be rushing to polish up the syllabus or figure out what to say in the first week of lectures).

14. Go clubbing. While you still have some free time, it’s nice to see what kinds of student clubs and teams your college has to offer.

You might just be dying to join the Jews for Jesus or the Wiccans, the Young Green Republicans or the Democrats for Sarah Palin, the Rock-Paper-Scissors Club or the Death Cab for Cutie fan club. And even if you don’t want to join in on the fun, the look-see will give you a better feel for what’s going on at the school and what the students are like.

15. Take a breath. Fifteen weeks—or one semester—is a long haul.

Don’t get wound up too quickly. There’ll be plenty of time for panic once the semester sets in.

Bullying? Not on My Watch!

By Todd Patkin Every few months, it seems, there’s another headline about the death of a child or teen as the result of bullying. That’s terrifying, and it’s also unacceptable. To some extent we expect to hear about economic woes, political strife, and natural disasters. We don’t expect to hear about the premature (and preventable) deaths of our young people. And we shouldn’t have to. According to Todd Patkin, it’s past time for America to realize that bullying is “the” problem of our day, and for parents and educators to lead the revolution on stopping this dangerous behavior.

If you’re skeptical, consider the following statistics from www.bullyingstatistics.org: • Almost 30 percent of young people participate in bullying behaviors or are bullying victims.

• Every day, around 160,000 students do not attend school because they are afraid of being bullied.

• Young people who have been bullied are two to nine times likelier than their nonbullied peers to consider suicide.

“To put it bluntly, what we’re doing to combat bullying clearly isn’t working,” says Patkin, author of the new book Finding Happiness: One Man’s Quest to Beat Depression and Anxiety and—Finally—Let the Sunshine In. “Suicides are still happening, and that’s not even mentioning the thousands of kids whose lives are destroyed or diminished— but not ended—by bullying.”

Yes, bullying is a big problem.

Patkin knows from personal experience just how devastating bullying can be. Being the target of several tormenters filled his high school years with much anxiety, and the effects of being bullied lasted into his adulthood.

Patkin recalls: “My tormenters caused me to dread coming to school or attending social functions. My confidence and selfesteem took a huge hit. And looking back, I believe that the negative self-image bullying cultivated lasted well into my adult years and contributed to the anxiety and depression from which I suffered.”

Patkin isn’t alone. In fact, research has shown that the fear, social anxiety, shame, 12

low self-esteem, and anger that bullying causes can rear their heads throughout adulthood, often at crucial moments, causing individuals who were once bullied to stick with “easy,” “safe,” or “defensive” choices instead of those that might prove most beneficial. There are definitive links between childhood bullying and adult depression. Being bullied can also lead to anger management problems and aggression in adulthood.

“The importance of combating and preventing bullying should be obvious,” Patkin states. “By preventing a young person from being bullied, we may be freeing him or her from a lifetime of feeling inadequate and being haunted by horrible memories. We may even be saving a life.”

So, why isn’t the current approach working?

Yes, bullying has gotten a lot of media attention, and as a result, schools and communities are providing more and more resources for bullied kids. They’re encouraging victims to reach out for help, and they’re also instituting zero-tolerance policies aimed at the bullies themselves. But too many victims are still slipping through the cracks. Why? According to Patkin, we’re putting too much responsibility on the young people we’re trying to protect.

“Schools put out a lot of rhetoric on dealing with and preventing bullying, but the problem is still rampant,” he points out.

“That’s because our current approach revolves around requiring kids to tell on each other—and it’s not as effective as we hoped.

For several reasons, young people just aren’t reporting the bullies.”

First of all, kids who are being bullied often lack the self-esteem and confidence to stand up for themselves and let adults know what’s happening. They also worry that turning a tormentor in will make them new targets, or intensify the former level of bullying.

“I certainly didn’t ask teachers or my parents for any help when I was in high school

because I was so ashamed of my weakness in dealing with my bullies,” Patkin admits.

“Also, I was afraid that if my teachers or parents stepped in, their interference would just make my tormenters focus their efforts on me more. I’d be even more on the outside because I’d ratted out my peers.”

Patkin believes that many young people today feel just as powerless to speak up and “out” bullies—and he also points out that repercussions for them could be worse than those he might have faced due to cyberbullying. In other words, today’s bullies aren’t forced to stop once the school bell rings— their vicious and hurtful behavior can continue 24/7 thanks to social media sites, texting, and emails.

“How much longer are we going to let this problem go on?” Patkin asks. “Are we going to continue to allow more kids to become victims because, like I was, they’re too scared to speak up? Not on my watch!”

Here’s what our goal should be.

“We need to spark a culture-wide revolution to make bullying uncool—in fact, unacceptable!” Patkin insists. “There needs to be a palpable stigma attached to tormenting and belittling another person in this way.”

Patkin compares the bullying problem to drunk driving. Once upon a time, getting behind the wheel after a few alcoholic beverages was fairly common and casual, and was not seen as “that big of a deal”—just as, until recently, bullying was seen as “a part of kids growing up.”

Then an organization called Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) took up the cause and dramatically changed the way in which Americans viewed drunk driving.

It’s (Past) Time for a Cultural Revolution roots movement, MADD caused the public to view driving while intoxicated as something that is reprehensible, irresponsible, dangerous, and even criminal. MADD’s efforts also helped to enact stronger penalties against drunk drivers.

“Similarly, bullies need to lose the ‘cool’ image that comes with being at the top of the social pecking order,” Patkin says. “The public—adults and kids alike—needs to view bullying as something that brands you with a modern-day scarlet letter. Our current zero-tolerance policies are a good start, but we need to add another prong to our antibullying approach. In short, parents have to lead the way (along with other students) to say that we are no longer going to accept this behavior. It has to start in your house.”

What can parents do to change things?

“We as parents need to be more proactive in raising kids who are not bullies,” Patkin says. “If young people see bullying as something to avoid at all costs—something that they don’t want to participate in or allow to happen—we’ll be directly attacking the problem instead of treating the symptoms. Over time, this attitude will spread and will hopefully become just as ingrained in the public psyche as our negative views on drunk driving. The best news is, getting started is pretty simple.”

First, have the bullying talk. Talk to your kids about bullying, just as you would have the drug talk or the drunk driving talk. Explain just how damaging certain words and actions can be to others—even if your child didn’t “mean” them or think they would have a lasting impact.

“You should also make a point to explain that when someone commits suicide because of bullying, many lives are ruined,” Patkin suggests. “As a parent, you don’t want a young person’s death on your head, or on that of your child.”

Patkin is also adamant that if your child is caught bullying, you must take it very, very seriously. If you caught your child lying or stealing, you’d come down hard, right? You definitely wouldn’t brush off the behavior as “just a stage.” You’d do whatever was necessary to nip it in the bud. Treat bullying the

same way.

“Ultimately, this is one social change that will happen because ordinary parents are purposeful in how they’re raising their children,” Patkin concludes. “In the past, bullies have been seen as ‘cool’—they’ve even been glamorized in popular culture thanks to movies like Mean Girls. We have the power and responsibility to change this view, now that we fully understand the thousands of lives that bullying affects every day. And that change must start now.”

Believe it or not, 2013/2 the new school year is right

around the corner. Students may feel like they’ve

only just finished up, but the next semester begins in midAugust. The time to start preparing is now, and the school districts of Lincoln County and western St. Charles County have already begun communicating to families online and via mail about academic year 2013-2014. Much of the information parents and students need to know has been collected here in one easy-to-access article. However, check your district and school website often. As the summer progresses, more events will be scheduled and updates will be posted more frequently.

Before picking up your supply list, make sure your student is up-todate on the immunizations required by the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services. To attend school, all students must present documentation of current immunization status. To remain in school, students must have an Immunization In Progress form on file and must receive immunizations as soon as they become due. A detailed schedule of required immunizations by grade level is available at the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services website: health.mo.gov.

Religious and medical exemptions are allowed, but the appropriate exemption card must be on file. School districts want parents to know that unimmunized children are subject to exclusion from school when outbreaks of vaccine-preventable diseases occur.

The most important tip school districts are offering this summer is to get prepared now. Some districts have quickly approaching deadlines or athletic try-outs scheduled for the end of the summer or first weeks of the school year. Secondly, make sure to plan a visit to your child’s school, especially if this is a new school or one that will not offer a formal welcome back event, transition day or open house. For more information about your school district, be sure to check your district and school websites.

Lincoln County R III School District www.troy.k12.mo.us The biggest change in the Lincoln County R III School District this year is the addition of a new elementary school: Claude Brown at 711 West College in Troy. Claude Brown’s schedule will mirror that of the other elementary schools in the District. A boundary search is available at the District website to determine which elementary school your child will attend.

The first day of school for Lincoln County R III will be August 15.

Thanksgiving Break is planned for November 27 - 29. Winter Break will be December 23 - January 3, and Spring Break will be March 10 - 14. Students will also have April 18 and 21 off for the Easter Break. The last day of school is tentatively scheduled for May 20. Inclement weather make-up days (if needed) are January 20, February 17, April 21, May 21, 22, 23, 27, 28, 29, 30, and June 2 and 3 ( if January 20 and February 17 are not used.)

Ninth Grade Center Welcome Back Day will be Wednesday, July 31, from 12 – 6pm. At these events, students will be able to get their picture taken, pick up their schedules, and tour the building.

Inclement weather make-up days will be May 30 and June 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6.

There will not be any early release days at the elementary and middle schools, but there will be two early release days at the end of each semester at the high schools.

4 Things Parents Should Know Before Paying for College

By John McDonough From $20,000 to $65,000 a year: that’s the tuition cost for one year of college, says John McDonough, a money expert who helps retirees and parents plan for their families’ futures.

“For the 2012–2013 academic year, the average cost for an in-state public college is $22,261. A moderate budget for a private college averaged $43,289,” says McDonough, CEO of Studemont Group College Funding Solutions, www.studemontgroup.com. “But for elite schools, we’re talking about three times the cost of your local state school. Either way, your kid’s higher education can easily shoot into six figures after four years.”

Along with worrying about rising tuition prices, parents also fear for their own futures if their retirement savings are drained by children’s college costs, McDonough says. Only 14 percent, for example, are very confident they’ll have the money to live comfortably in retirement, he says, citing a 2012 survey by the Employee Benefit Research Institute.

“Families feel they’re faced with conflicting goals, but there are numerous ways to pay for college while investing in your future retirement,” says McDonough, who offers insights for parents to keep in mind while planning for their child’s education: • The ROI of a college education: At a time when so many American families are financially strapped, college is an especially stressful topic because parents know higher learning will help their kids succeed. College graduates earn 84 percent than those with only a high school diploma, according to Georgetown’s Center on Education and the Workforce. Here is how earning breaks down over one’s life time, based on education: a doctoral degree-holder will earn $3.3 million over a lifetime; $2.3 million is estimated for a college graduate; those with only a high school diploma can expect $1.3 million.

• Move retirement assets to qualify for grants: Most parents know about the 529 savings account, but that’s not necessarily the best or only option. Reallocating your retirement assets, such as 401(k)s, can better position a child to qualify for grants and scholarships. This legal and ethical maneuvering may be the single most important factor when considering how to pay for college.

• Know your student’s strengths and weaknesses: Consider independent and objective analysis of your future college student. Assessment might include a personality profile and a detailed search for a future career. Also think about a more nuts-and-bolts approach, including scholarship eligibility, SAT and ACT prep courses, review of admissions essays and an in-depth analysis of chances for enrollment in a student’s top four choices of colleges.
