The progress has been bustling and the visual proof is there.

Construction in, near, and around Fifth Street and Interstate 70 has been sure and steady and will continue to do so in and around the Fourth of July holiday season.

“There are no additional closures scheduled through the July 4th holiday as part of the I-70 and Fifth Street/Fairgrounds Road improvement project,” Jessica Hochlan, Intermediate Communications Specialist with the Missouri Department of Transportation said.

“However, any of the lane and ramp closures that are currently in place will remain in place during the holiday weekend.”

The Fairgrounds Interchange project will take up the bulk of the rest of the summer.

Construction from partial cloverleaf intersection into a diverging diamond interchange at the intersection of Fifth Street and Interstate 70 will remain throughout the summer months.

“It will be similar to what you see at the Mid-Rivers Mall intersection,” John Lewis, MODOT resident engineer said.

“It will allow traffic to handle that left to right and get it moving really well.”

Some of the most notable changes of late has been at Veterans Memorial Parkway between Fairgrounds Road and Fifth Street is one-way (eastbound only). Drivers coming from Fifth Street should take Boone’s Lick Road to Route 94 to Veterans Memorial Parkway to get around.

The new ramp from southbound Fifth Street to eastbound I-70 is open. Drivers must stop at a traffic signal before turning left onto eastbound I-70. This is temporary until the diverging diamond interchange is complete. The new ramp from westbound I-70 to northbound Fifth Street is open.

“We have had a few utility issues that we worked through,” Lewis said. “The new intersection is set to be completed by Black Friday and all work will be done by April of next year.”

The Fifth Street Gateway Project is looking to create a legacy for the Fifth Street corridor leading into the city of St. Charles from Interstate 70 for many years to come. The project is part of the district redevelopment plan for the city and includes roadway and streetscape improvements along Fifth Street from Bass Pro Drive to First Capitol Drive.

The motivation behind the project was to project a smoother, sleeker first impression, enhance aesthetics of Fifth Street, improve traffic flow and safety, and promote pedestrian activity. When the entire project is complete it will serve as shiny new front door to the city of St. Charles and provide a gateway leading into the core of the hospital district.

Operation Food Search seeks volunteers for eighth annual Saturday Jubilee Food Drive Operation Food Search, the region’s largest distributor of free food for the hungry, seeks group and individual volunteers for its July 30 Saturday Jubilee, a region-wide food drive to restock its distribution center and shelves for its 330 community partner agencies this summer.

Approximately 1,000 volunteers are needed to assist in staggered shifts from 8:30 a.m. to 4:15 p.m., greeting customers and collecting donations at 150 of the organization’s grocery store partners in the city of St. Louis, and in St. Louis, St.

Red Cross urges blood donations to maintain summer supply The American Red Cross urges eligible donors to give blood in the weeks surrounding Independence Day to help ensure a sufficient blood supply for patients now and throughout the summer.

Blood donations often decline in the summer months, especially around summer holidays when donors are less available to give. The need for blood doesn’t decrease though – every two seconds, someone in the U.S. requires blood or platelets. In fact, a recent survey of Red Cross blood and platelet donors showed that nearly half knew someone who needed blood or they needed blood themselves.

“Donating blood helps save lives and can

affect people you know and work alongside every day,” said Scott Nethery, whose sevenyear-old daughter Audrey requires frequent transfusions. Audrey was born with Diamond Blackfan anemia, a rare condition where her body doesn’t make enough red blood cells. “I am so appreciative of the individuals whose blood is within my daughter at this very moment.

Without blood, my little angel would not be with us today.”

Hummingbirds gone from feeders?

They’ll be back The ruby-throated hummingbird with blurred wingbeats and the ability to hover in the air is a fascinating visitor to flower gardens and home bird feeders. But each summer they seem to mysteriously vanish from some yards. They will return, says Larry Rizzo, Missouri Department of Conservation natural history biologist.

“Many people see ruby-throated hummingbirds in spring when they are migrating,” Rizzo said.

“Even more common is seeing them at feeders from late July through late September when young are fledged and joining the population and fall migration gets underway, so birds from the north move in. But during the height of nesting season, from mid-May through late July, the birds are often scarce and not visiting feeders.

It’s just an indication you don’t have nesting hummingbirds close by.”

If weeks have gone by without a hummingbird sighting, he recommends taking the feeder down for now. But hummingbird feeders should go back up by mid-July.

“Birds will reappear by the first of August,” Rizzo said.

A reminder, creating hummingbird “nectar” for a feeder requires four-to-five parts water to one part sugar. Heat the mixture until the sugar

dissolves into solution. Do not use or add a red dye to the nectar.

In late summer and fall, keep an eye out for Rufous hummingbirds that are sometimes seen migrating through western Missouri from July through November. Anna’s hummingbirds and a few other western species sometimes migrate through Missouri, too. Hummingbird feeders can be kept up into late autumn to provide food for any late-migrating or unusual species.

Wentzville appoints new city administrator At Wentzville’s Board of Aldermen meeting on June 22, the board approved the mayor’s appointment of David Gipson as the new city administrator. Gipson has served as the acting city administrator following former city administrator Robert Bartolotta’s retirement in February.

The city administrator is responsible for carrying out the policies and ordinances of the board of aldermen, overseeing the day-to-day operations of the government, appointing and supervising the heads of the various city departments and serving as the chief administrative assistant to the mayor. In this role, the city administrator has superintending control of the administration and management of the government business, officers and employees of

the city, subject to the direction and supervision of the mayor.

Prior to his appointment as Wentzville’s assistant city administrator in March 2015, Gipson served as assistant city manager for the city of Richmond Heights. Previously, he worked for the city of St. Charles in various capacities from 2004 to 2011 – serving as planner, government relations specialist and the planning manager.

Gipson holds a bachelor’s degree in planning from Missouri State University in Springfield and a master’s degree in public policy administration from the University of Missouri-St. Louis, with an emphasis in local government management.

O’Fallon chamber endorses Proposition PARKS This August O’Fallon’s voters will be asked to decide on an important ballot issue that will continue to improve the quality of life for O’Fallon residents, Proposition PARKS. If approved by the voters, this proposition will allow the city of O’Fallon to issue bonds for the construction of an expanded Alligator’s Creek Aquatic Center and the construction of a brand new passive park off of Highway DD called O’Day Park. The cost for all of these projects would be an increase of .02 cents property tax increase per $100 assessed valuation.

Following a discussion on Proposition PARKS at the June 21 O’Fallon Chamber of Commerce & Industries board meeting, the O’Fallon chamber board of directors voted to endorse Proposition PARKS. The O’Fallon chamber encourages its members and the community to vote “yes” in the

Aug. 2 election to support O’Fallon’s parks system.

While the O’Fallon Chamber of Commerce & Industries’ Board of Directors strongly supports the expansion of the parks system for the community’s quality of place, the board is hopeful that upon approval, the project will have an open bidding process without the constraints of a project labor agreement.

“The O’Fallon chamber recognizes what the expansion of our parks system means to the community. O’Day Park will be a great asset to the businesses on the southern end of O’Fallon, as it will surely draw visitors from all over the area. The expansion of Alligator Creek will give even more residents and guests a reason to visit our downtown area,” said Erin Williams, President/CEO of the O’Fallon Chamber of Commerce & Industries.

Work on Mexico Road Multi-Use Path Bridge Project requires eastbound lane closures Drivers can expect daily lane closures on eastbound Mexico Road just east of West Sunny Hill Boulevard as work begins on the Mexico Road Multi-Use Path Bridge Project.

This project will build a new multi-use pedestrian and bike path bridge over Dardenne Creek along Mexico Road. The new trail connection will provide pedestrian access on the south side of Mexico Road to the Great Rivers Greenway

Dardenne Greenway trail. It will also provide a connection to the sidewalk system on the south side of Mexico Road to provide safer access to Mid Rivers Elementary School.

This project is partially funded through a Federal Transportation Alternative Program (TAP) grant. Completion is scheduled for October.

Cuivre River Electric Youth Tour delegates visit U.S. Capitol One-hundred and three high school juniors from Missouri participated in the 53rd anniversary of National Rural Electric Cooperative Association’s (NRECA) Youth Tour in Washington, D.C. June 10-16. Local delegates were Emily Baalman, Dardenne Prairie; Clare Citrowske, O’Fallon; Kacie Francois, Wentzville; Leo Kniffen, Warrenton; Justin Rice, Truesdale; and Kai Rogers, Winfield. They were sponsored by Cuivre River Electric Cooperative (CREC), Troy.

The seven-day tour provided an action-filled week for high school students, offering them opportunities to learn first-hand what it’s like to be involved in politics, community service and today’s pressing issues. Highlights included a special session on Capitol Hill with U.S. Congressman Blaine Luetkemeyer to discuss the process of government, issues of the day and increasing their knowledge of cooperative electric utilities and American history.

“The Youth Tour students from Missouri demonstrated a true passion for learning about democracy and government. They asked some really tough questions on everything from education-related bills, health care to climate change legislation. It’s great to see high school students eager to learn and gain leadership skills. Building strong leaders out of today’s young people is essential to our nation’s future,” said Luetkemeyer.

It will give them hope that your generation understands how to

lead and you are committed to doing so.”

Missouri’s Youth Tour delegates visited with U.S. Congressmen from their congressional districts across the state, toured famous monuments, the Smithsonian Institution’s museums, George Washington’s Mount Vernon Estate and Arlington National Cemetery. The group also took a sightseeing cruise on the Potomac River one evening with delegates from other states.

Since 1964, CREC has sponsored 210 Youth Tour delegates for visits to their U.S. congressional delegations, energy and grassroots government education

sessions, and sightseeing in Washington, D.C. More than 53,000 high school juniors and seniors sponsored by the nation’s electric cooperatives have participated in the Youth Tour since the educational leadership program began.

Previous Youth Tour participants have become University Presidents, CEO’s of Fortune 500 companies, and Members of Congress. In fact, Apple CEO Tim Cook credited the Youth Tour with his first trip to Washington in his commencement speech to graduates of The George Washington University this year.

The St. Louis area was well represented at the Mrs. Missouri Amer ic a Page ant as Mrs. Wentzville, Heather Hussey, was crowned 2016 Mrs. Missouri America. The event was held in conjunction with the Mrs. Kansas America Pageant in Chillicothe, Missouri. Mrs. Missouri receives an all-expense paid trip to Las Vegas, Nevada to represent the Show Me State at the national Mrs. America Pageant Aug. 20-27. Required categories of competition include Interview, Evening Gown and Swimsuit. The winner of the Mrs. America Pageant will advance to the Mrs. World competition held in Incheon, South Korea Sept.

23 – Oct. 5.

There have been two women crowned Mrs. America from the state of Missouri and both ladies were from the St. Louis area.

Flying High Have you ever been stuck in bumper-to-bumper traffic idling in neutral while breathing in some SUV’s toxic exhaust fumes? Some reports say we spend as much as three months of our life in traffic. Has the thought ever crossed your mind that things would be much easier if only we lived like the Jetsons and had personal flying transportation?

Well think no more because the Jetson era is coming. It is estimated that in the year 2017 we will have flying cars available.

Just think of all the problems these vehicles could solve: Avoiding the morning school madness. How much easier would it be to drop the kids off at school–literally? Whizzing over the parking lot and merely opening the escape hatch while shouting these important reminders, “Don’t forget to hand in your math assignment and to tuck and roll before your hit the pavement!”

Less deer accidents. It is estimated these hooved creatures are the cause of approximately 1.5 million accidents per year. Soaring up in the atmosphere would help greatly, except for the occasional seagull being sucked into the engine.

Aggravating weather conditions. How irritating is it to come out after a long day’s work to find your car completely covered in a thick blanket of snow? SCC Continuing Education Department to host Art Extravaganza

St. Charles Community College will host an exhibit featuring artwork from its Continuing Education students and instructors July 18-Aug. 4. The show, titled “Art Extravaganza,” will be in the gallery of the Donald D. Shook Fine Arts Building on the SCC campus in Cottleville.

The gallery will feature artwork from students of all ages who have participated in the Continuing Education Department’s 20142016 classes and summer camps, as well as their instructors.

Meet the artists and instructors at a reception from 6-8 p.m. Aug. 4, in the Fine Arts Building gallery.

Gallery hours are 8 a.m. - 8 p.m. MondayThursday, 8 a.m. - 4 p.m. Fridays, and 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. on Saturdays. The exhibit is free and open to the public.

The exhibition is open to all who have attended an SCC Continuing Education art, craft, photography or computer design class in the past 24 months. Artwork must be original work created by the artist within the past two years and not previously shown at SCC. Those interested in showcasing their work can submit up to five works. Acceptance is dependent on the number of overall entries and space available. Entry forms must be received by the Continuing Education office in the John M. McGuire Humanities Building, Room 103, by Friday, July 8.

Kasey Lann, a third grade math teacher in the Wentzville School District, has been selected as a finalist for the 2016 Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST).

The award is the highest recognition that a K-12 mathematics or science teacher may receive for outstanding teaching in the United States.

“When I learned that I was a finalist, I felt very proud of what my students and I had accomplished in the school year. I could not wait to share the news with family, friends/ colleagues, and most of all my class,” said Lann, one of only five educators in Missouri to be chosen as a state finalist in mathematics. “I am honored and blessed to represent Heritage Intermediate and the Wentzville School District and will continue to strive to grow as an educator.”

The awards are given to

mathematics and science teachers from each of the 50 states and four U.S. jurisdictions.

It recognizes those teachers who develop and implement a high-quality instructional program that enhances student learning. Lann represents the fourth WSD educator in five years to receive this prestigious recognition for excellence in teaching.

The White House will announce the winners next year. Those selected for this presidential honor will receive a $10,000 award from the National Science Foundation to be used at their discretion. They also are invited to Washington, DC for an awards ceremony, educational events, and visits with members of congress and the administration.

St. Dominic graduate receives LindenwoodPachyderm Scholarship Emily Scott, a 2016 graduate of St. Dominic High School in O’Fallon, has been named the recipient of the university’s 2016 Pachyderm Scholarship, which is presented in cooperation with the St. Charles Country Pachyderm Club.

Scott, a resident of Wentzville, has in high school served on the student council and a variety of clubs and organizations and was an honor student. She also studies piano privately, in which she has competed in regional music competitions, and is active in 4-H, in which she has won Grand Champion and Reserve Champion awards in swine and cake decorating and has served in several officer

But every summer when Carter Carburetor closed down for three weeks, the family would pack up everything into their Byerly trailer and head out. Over 20 years, they visited Mount Rushmore, Devils Tower, the Everglades, Mesa Verde, Mackinaw Island, the Calgary Stampede and more. Campgrounds weren’t like they are now, but the Warrens traveled in relative luxury in their 1954, 16foot, Byerly Mansion.

Ingredients: 1 1/4 cups plain Greek yogurt 2 tablespoons honey 1 lime, zest only 1 1/4 cups Montmorency tart cherry juice 1 lime, juice only 1/3 cup finely chopped fresh mint leaves 2 tablespoons light rum (optional)

Directions: Stir together yogurt, honey and lime zest. In separate bowl, stir together tart cherry juice, lime juice, mint and rum, if desired.

To unmold pops, run mold under warm water for a few seconds, being careful not to thaw pops. Store in freezer for up to 2 months.

Spoon two alternate layers of yogurt and cherry mixture into each mold. Insert sticks into molds and freeze until solid, about 6 hours.

“Swiss Army Man”

The bold making of ‘Swiss Army Man’ Reminiscent of Tom Hanks and his “Castaway” volleyball, the dark comedy “Swiss Army Man” features a young man named Hank (Paul Dano) who also is stranded on a desert island. Instead of athletic equipment, though, Hank finds companionship with Manny, a dead man, played by Danielle Radcliffe. The corpse may not have Harry Potter’s magical abilities but it proves to be a useful survival tool.

So how does a film with a fresh and outrageous plot like this get made? When reached by phone, “Swiss Army Man” producer Miranda Bailey said a colleague had been pitching her some pretty standard projects. In her words, she said she wanted to do “something different.” That turned out to be a script by Daniel Schienert and Daniel Kwan, who are known simply as the Daniels.

“He said ‘I have this one that’s by the guys who directed the video for ‘Turned Down for What.’

So my eyes kind of perked up because I know that video,” Bailey explained. “But it’s this movie where there are two guys and one of them is dead.”

Bailey received the script that night and read it.

She came into her office and talked with producing partner Amanda Marshall: “I was like ‘Hey, so we are doing this other project, and this is what it is.’ And she is like ‘Are you crazy? What?

[The Daniels] have never directed a movie before; they’ve done really, really weird short films. This is not easy.’”

Marshall did read the script and got on board with it, so they took a meeting with the Daniels.

“They are meeting with everyone at that point.

And everyone at that point is like ‘Yeah, we want to work with these guys,’ but everyone was way

too afraid to do that movie. I was like ‘Listen, I’ll do it.

We’ll do it. We’ll find financing partners, we’ll help you get a great cast and we’ll make this movie.’ So that’s kind of how it happened,” she said.

During production, Bailey said she got Manny to be more of a tool, a real Swiss Army Man kind of tool. They

still had to find the right person to play the useful corpse.

“Paul Dano had wanted to work with [the Daniels], so Paul Dano signed on. And then it was all about who would be the next guy, and we knew we would need someone who had some international pull, but also someone was creative and a good physical actor,” Bailey added. “We were in discussions with other actors who wanted to be in the movie, but they didn’t necessarily want to rehearse.”

She also points out that to produce a film like “Swiss Army Man” requires a really creative team: “The Daniels already are very, very involved in all of the special effects in everything they do. That’s what they are known for doing; they are known for being very creative with practical and special effects in their music videos. It would be a different scenario if these were directors that were pretty traditional to begin with. It couldn’t have happened.”
