Construction on the St. Charles County Justice Center will provide a safer, more secure and sanitary environment for employees, inmates and outside agencies

By Brett Auten A safer and more efficient county jail is on the horizon.

Construction on the St. Charles County Justice Center is well underway and will continue through the end of the year.

Dan Keen, the St. Charles County Director of Corrections, said the improvements were put in place due to the need to prevent the spread of COVID-19 throughout the facility and provide a safer, more secure

and sanitary environment for employees, inmates, and outside agencies.

“This will put us in line for years to come for any type of airborne virus we may face in the future,” Keen said.

When it is all said and done, the jail will have a larger and more secure booking area.

“The booking area is going from 4,000 square feet to 14,000,” Keen said.

Also, cell doors are being replaced with ones that have wickets, or openings, to allow officers to pass food trays or handcuff

There will be designated housing units with negative pressure areas to reduce the spread of COVID-19 and other airborne viruses.

“They will have 14 days to clear before entering the general population,” Keen said.

“Currently, we are driving two or three prisoners to court, disinfecting the vehicle, before getting two or three more,” Keen said. “Now we will be able to transport them straight there in a much more efficient manner.”

The construction, which will be finished and in use by the end of the year, is being paid for through Coronavirus Aid, Relief,

and Economic Security CARES Act funding.

“This is a 30-year-old facility and the construction team has been plugging away,” Keen said. “COVID was the driving factor to see part of it done. It’s corrections, so anything can happen at any given time. The staff and the inmates have been excellent and have made adjustments at the drop of the hat on any last-minute moving of individuals.”

Cottleville firefighters donating coats to children in need As cold weather approaches, Cottleville firefighters are hard at work sorting and delivering 360 winter coats to children in need. This donation is part of an annual winter coat program that has provided over 1,600 new coats to children in the community. The Cottleville firefighters fundraise for this project through their nonprofit and partner with the Francis Howell School District to distribute the coats to families that need them.

“We want to keep kids warm at the bus stop and outside playing throughout the winter.

We hope this program takes some of the financial strain

from families that are already on tight budgets,” says Cory Hogan, a Cottleville Professional Firefighter.

Recipients are being selected by the Francis Howell School District’s educational support counselors, who then provide the children with their coat while they attend classes.

“Giving these coats out at school makes it easier for families that don’t have transportation,” says Hogan.

In previous years, the Cottleville firefighters delivered the coats to children themselves. However, COVID-19 precautions are being observed this year and the firefighters

Virtual Veterans Day Tribute to air Nov. 11 Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the city of St. Peters is not holding an in-person event for Veterans Day this year. Instead, St. Peters Television (SPTV) will air a virtual special: Veterans Day: A Tribute to All Who Served, on Wednesday, Nov. 11, at 10 a.m.

The special contains memorable moments from speeches and musical tributes from past Veterans Day ceremonies.

11th Annual LSLPOA Holiday Charity Drive will help feed families this Thanksgiving The Lake St. Louis Police Officer’s Association is going to deliver food to less fortunate families again this Thanksgiving. The food items will include a fully prepared meal (turkey and all the fixings) purchased from a local business.

They will also be sponsoring local school children again this Christmas. The 2019 Thanksgiving charity drive was very successful and they would like to continue the tradition. The Holiday Charity Drive will begin now and will continue until Dec. 22. Please do not send food items or clothing as there is no storage facility.

St. Charles County launches ‘QLess’ at municipal courts to improve safety, customer service in pandemic Residents in St. Charles County soon will be able to avoid crowds and save time when they need to visit key County Government departments. Beginning Oct. 23, those needing to make an appearance at St. Charles County Municipal Court, located at 399 Turner Boulevard in St. Peters, can join a virtual queue from their mobile device or computer using the free QLess app.

QLess enhances customer experience by providing real-time status updates. Individuals have the option of waiting in their car or outdoors to avoid a crowded courtroom.

Those without a mobile device,

or opting not to use the app, should check in and seek assistance when they arrive at the Municipal Court building.

Later this year, more government buildings and services will be added to the QLess system, including Assessor, Collector of Revenue, Community Development, Finance, Human Resources, Recorder of Deeds, and Sheriff ’s Office in the Administration Building at 201 N. Second Street in St. Charles, as well as the County’s Pet Adoption Center at 4850 Mid Rivers Mall Drive in St. Peters, and the Department of Public Health at 1650 Boone’s Lick Road in St. Charles.

businesses across the nation are facing the same issues we are with COVID-19,” says County Executive Steve Ehlmann.

“While we offer the option of accessing some services online, there are others – like pet adoption, passports, document deliveries and court appearances – that must be done in person.

With QLess, we can eliminate long lines. Having fewer people in our buildings at one time will keep customers safer from the spread of disease.”

Based on their proximity to the county building where their appointment is located, residents can remain at home, in their car or tend to other business until they are notified

via text that it is time to head toward the service location. A spot in line can be managed by text commands that enable users to request more time, leave the line, ask for help, cancel an appointment, or be notified of the time remaining before they reach the front of the line.

QLess capabilities at the county’s administration building will include a kiosk for the app in the lobby. Instead of using QLess on a mobile device or computer, at the kiosk customers will simply pick the service they need, enter their first name and last initial, and be given an estimated wait time.

will update those in the queue.

When it’s their turn, customers will be alerted both visually and audibly through the monitor or their mobile device.

Appointments for some in-person services will be available by using the QLess calendar feature, including fingerprinting services by the Sheriff ’s Department; employment candidate testing by Human Resources; homeowner certification tests through Community Development; specialized licenses from Finance; and military discharge papers and marriage license applications from the Recorder of Deeds. The calendar feature will show details about what services are available and when.

At the Pet Adoption Center, customers will be able to make an appointment to adopt a pet via the website or through the QLess app, either in advance or from the building parking lot.

They will be given a wait time and alerted when they can enter the building.

The St. Charles County Public Health building is undergoing renovations to better keep customers and staff safe and secure, but when complete at the end of the year, QLess will be available for making health appointments and getting in a queue for services such as passports, vital records, testing and more.

It is important to note that QLess does not sell data or transfer it to third parties; however, those who do not wish to use the QLess app still will be able to access all services as before – by going to the location, using the kiosk in the Administration Building, calling to make an appointment, or visiting sccmo.org/OnlineServices for a list of services available online.

“Keeping our residents safe is always a priority, but it is especially important during this pandemic,” Ehlmann says.

“QLess allows us to meet those unique needs now, while providing enhancements that will save customers time and improve our services now and in the future.”

Win prizes, trophies and a Thanksgiving turkey with St. Charles County Parks Just in time for Thanksgiving, contenders of all ages and skill levels can compete for cash prizes, trophies and a Thanksgiving turkey at the 17th annual Disc Golf Blind Turkey Toss Tournament, Nov. 21, at St. Charles County’s Indian Camp Creek Park at 2679 Dietrich Road in Foristell.

This nighttime event is fun for disc golf enthusiasts and first-time disc golfers alike and is hosted by the St. Charles County Parks and Recreation Department and the St. Charles County Disc Golf Club.

Using baskets lined with glow sticks to mark the course, a 5 p.m. shotgun start will kick-off the 18-hole contest. Trophies will be awarded to first, second, and third-place finishers and the competitor closest to the pin of one of the glowing baskets wins a Thanksgiving turkey.

The tournament is for individual play, and the cost to enter is $10. Participation is limited and the event is open to the first 72 registered contestants. Registration begins at 4 p.m. on the day of the event. A limited number of LED disc lights will be available for competitors to purchase at the registration table.

Inspiration Corner: When someone doesn’t love us back “What other dungeon is so dark as one’s own heart!” – Nathaniel Hawthorne With one eye she watched the clock, and with the other she watched the front door. But like the proverbial pot of water that refuses to boil, the desired outcome was lacking. She has known for some time her sister doesn’t love her back, but she still struggles to come to terms with rejection.

That day was an agony like no other.

She looked at me with hot tears in her eyes, “Why doesn’t my sister love me? Am I not lovable?”

“You are infinitely lovable.” I said.

“Then why didn’t she come? She knew how important this was.”

I searched my brain for an encouraging word but before I could speak, she said, “I’m done with her. I never want to see her again.”

She wanted to build a fortress around her heart to protect against future pain. Each word was a brick and the mortar was her tears. But the longing to be loved remained. Hidden inside the stronghold was a mosaic of broken pieces and no finger to make them whole.

C.S. Lewis writes in “The Four Loves”, “As soon as we are fully conscious we discover loneliness.

We need others physically, emotionally, intellectually; we need them if we are to know anything, even ourselves.”

I noticed this need in myself at a young age as I stared with wonder at the natural world. Upon catching a toad or lizard I found an intense need to share that excitement with someone I loved.

Usually it was my grandmother – a kind-hearted soul who took intense interest in all my discover-

ies. She seemed just as enchanted as I was – at least until I accidentally released a snake in her house.

That is when I discovered her fear of reptiles.

The way we experience the world seems “less than” without someone we love to share it with.

That is why my friend was hurting. She wanted to share one of life’s big moments with her sister. But like a three-legged stool with a crack in one leg, as soon as she put weight on the relationship, it broke.

I remember a time she did the same thing to me.

The thought occurred to me that we are all perpetrators. Unfortunately, all our love relationships are broken. None of us know how to love perfectly.

That is why the one perfect love that exists in this world – God’s love – is so beautiful.

When we forgive those who hurt us, we exhibit a facet of God’s character. This irrational love is infused with bright hope. Hate is easy. Love is hard.

Hate retreats but love advances. Hate festers. Love heals. Today, if you are struggling to find a finger to put the broken pieces of your heart back together, seek the love that surpasses the human kind.

Boone Center, Inc. (BCI) and Permian Plastics recently joined forces to establish a new manufacturing program at the BCI Skills Center, a first-of-its-kind vocational training facility for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The first cohort of students graduated Sept. 30.

Founded in January of 2019, the BCI Skills Center partners with local businesses like Permian Plastics – a leading precision injection molding firm – to create custom programs and, upon graduation, students move directly into the integrated workforce where they earn a competitive wage.

Graduates of the new program are now full-time team members at Permian Plastics’ headquarters located at 1477 Hoff Industrial Drive in O’Fallon. Permian Plastics produces custom molded products for the healthcare, biotechnology, electronics and telecommunications, consumer and industrial products and optical industries.

“We are excited about our partnership with the Skills Center and this customized training program for our Secondary Operations department,” said Permian Plastics President Ben Abbott. “The first cohort’s graduation and advancement into

because they’ve partnered with us in the past,” said BCI Skills Center Executive Director Todd Streff. “So, to see this partnership grow into a whole new vocational program at the Skills Center is really quite exciting.

The BCI Skills Center currently has three vocational programs including Salesforce, Hospitality Housekeeping, and another manufacturing program in partnership with True Manufacturing.

WSD students honored with Glory of Missouri Awards Five Zumwalt seniors named National Merit Semifinalists; nine Ten WSD students have been named recipients of the 2020 Glory of Missouri Award by State Repnamed Commended Scholars resentatives Bryan Spencer and Justin Hill. The Glory of Missouri Awards were created to recognize students who display virtuous qualities both as students and as citizens. Each student honored represents one of the virtues of good government engraved on the walls of the Missouri House Chamber. The virtues include knowledge, liberty, equality, law, justice, fraternity, education, progress, honor, truth, virtue, temperance, enterprise and charity.

Lindenwood University, St. Charles Community College sign articulation agreement Lindenwood University (LU) and St. Charles Community College (SCC) are coming together to create a smoother and more seamless transfer process for students.

On Oct. 21, LU President Dr. John Porter and SCC President. Dr. Barbara Kavalier signed a Memorandum of Agreement, strengthening the relationship between the two institutions and expanding the number of transferable courses.

“This is a great opportunity for SCC students to continue their education right here in St. Charles County,” said Kavalier. “By combining the resources of our institutions, students will benefit from a much smoother transition process.”

“We are thrilled to enter into this meaningful agreement with St. Charles Community College,” said Dr. John Porter, Lindenwood University president. “This will open doors for excellent students in our community and enrich both campuses in many ways.”

Fort Zumwalt School District’s five 2020 National Merit Scholarship Semifinalists are among the top scorers on the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT) taken by more than one million high school juniors at more than 22,000 high schools across the nation.

The semifinalists represent less than one percent of high school students and qualify to continue in the competition. Next spring, the National Merit Scholarship Corporation will award about $35 million to roughly 8,000 graduating high school seniors.

St. Peters and Cottleville residents will have an opportunity to safely destroy unneeded documents for free by bringing them to the “Shred It and Forget It” recycling event from 9 a.m.noon at the Health and Environmental Services Operations Building at 135 Ecology Drive. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, people who use the Shred It service will be unable to get out of vehicles to watch their materials get shredded by the large mobile shredder at the event. Please stay in your vehicles at all times. Please make sure that the boxes are not too heavy to lift.

There is a limit of five boxes per vehicle. The service is for St. Peters and Cottleville resident households only.

Lindenwood is set to begin its men’s and women’s seasons on Feb. 26, 2021 at Illinois Springfield. The Lions will open their home slate against Quincy on Feb. 28.

The schedule features an eight-week, balanced slate that ensures the league’s safe return to competition during the COVID-19 pandemic. The conference’s 15 teams will compete in a 14-match, single round-robin schedule beginning on Feb. 26, 2021.

“We are pleased to be able to provide our soccer student-athletes a spring schedule comparable to what they would have played this fall,” said GLVC Commissioner Jim Naumovich.

The quarterfinals of the GLVC Soccer Championship Tournament will take place on April 19, followed by the semifinals and finals on April 23 and 25 at Lindenwood’s Hunter Stadium in St. Charles.

Busy season meal solutions California-Style Cheesy Enchilada Casserole

Fill in the blank squares in the grid, making sure that every row, column and 3-by-3 box includes all the digits 1 through 9.

Directions: Preheat oven to 350 F. To make cooking sauce: In bowl, whisk eggs, salt, halfand-half and sour cream; set aside.

Spray casserole dish with vegetable oil.

To make casserole: Assemble first layer by spreading 6 tablespoons enchilada sauce on bottom of casserole dish.

Top with four tortillas, overlapping them. Cover tortillas with 6 tablespoons enchilada sauce.

Assemble second layer by tossing chicken with enchilada seasoning. Mix with 3 cups shredded cheese. Layer half chicken-cheese mixture over tortillas.

Cooking Sauce: 2 eggs 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/2 cup half-and-half, milk or evaporated milk 1/2 cup sour cream vegetable oil

Casserole: 1 1/2-2 cups prepared enchilada sauce, divided 12 corn tortillas, divided 1 cup roasted skinless chicken, cut lime wedges, for serving into bite-size pieces Real California sour cream, for serving

Assemble third layer by seasoning pinto beans with cumin and garlic powder. Spread beans over cheese-chicken layer.

Assemble fourth layer by overlapping four tortillas then cover with 6-8 tablespoons enchilada sauce. Cover with corn, olives and chiles. Top with remaining cheese-chicken mixture.

Assemble final layer by covering filling with remaining tortillas, overlapped, then spread remaining enchilada sauce over them. Pour cooking sauce over casserole. Top with remaining shredded cheese. Let rest at least 30 minutes.

Bake 50-60 minutes, or until bubbling. Remove and rest 10 minutes before cutting.

Sprinkle with cilantro and green onions. Serve with lime wedges and sour cream.

Denzel Washington digs deep in 2004’s remake of ‘The Manchurian Candidate’

enzel Washington is a consummate actor with credits that include the underwater thriller “Crimson Tide,” the boxing biopic “The Hurricane” and his Oscar-winning performance in “Training Day.” In 2004, the actor starred in “The Manchurian Candidate,” a remake of the classic 1962 film with Frank Sinatra in the lead role. Based on Richard Condon’s novel of the same name, the story follows Major Bennett “Ben” Marco (Washington), a Gulf War veteran who has troubling dreams about what really happened during a raid that he led.

In July 2004, I joined a roundtable discussion with Washington, who said he had never seen the original film or read the novel.

“Growing up, I didn’t watch movies,” he explained. “When did it come out—1962? I was eight. To be honest, I never heard of it.

I kind of wanted to work with the screenplay.

I didn’t want to go back, although it probably wouldn’t have been a bad idea to read the novel. What we were doing was so different, I think. Not so much what we’re doing was so different, but the times were so different, the events that this film talks about.”

In the remake, Liev Schreiber (“X-Men Origins: Wolverine”, “Ray Donovan”) plays

Moore On Life Yawn. Oh man. I just can’t get going. That’s it! It’s only 9 ‘o’clock.

I’ve got another hour before I have to wake up. I’m just gonna hit snooze and see you in an hour.

Okay, here I am.

Whew. Are you guys feeling it? Fatigue, exhaustion, tiredness, lethargy. Thank goodness for the thesaurus because this article has to have 350 words and I’m running out of ideas.

I think I need another little rest, catnap, siesta, sleepy-bye. Be right back.

Ahh, that’s better.

The problem is there are so many fatigues nowadays: COVID fatigue, staying-home fatigue, and the biggest one lately…election fatigue!

COVID: Are we tired of wearing masks and rebreathing our hot, stale breath and asking ourselves, “Why didn’t I use a stronger mouth wash?”

Wearing a mask around Halloween is something I can handle. All kinds of masks are popping up.

Once they were harder to find than lettuce in my diet salad (I promise, it’s there somewhere under the gobs of dressing and meat and cheese and gummy bears). Hey! It’s a pandemic. Croutons are in short supply.

Now masks are everywhere. Once they were tougher to get than a table at Denny’s during Grand Slam breakfast time. Today you can buy a six-pack of them at the grocery store right next to the gummy bears; believe me, I know.

Now there are masks with funny faces painted on them or fancy fabrics adorned with sequins.

Some even have messages on them. Those are dangerous. I noticed a guy wearing one announc-

ing his presidential preference. These days, this guy stands a good chance of getting punched in the face by the opposition. I hope the fabric is made of thick, blood-absorbent gauze.

Staying home: We’ve been confined forever. Our cats are getting upset. We’ve invaded their space for far too long. I’m certain we are going to end up on an upcoming episode of “Feline Felonies.” I suspect their plot will involve a trail of gummy bears leading to a noose.

Election: The non-stop commercials, calls and texts asking for contributions. Problem solved. I give the go-ahead to deduct a few Benjamins from my property taxes.

But seriously, I’m getting desperate. If these politicians don’t leave me alone I’m going to die, perish, croak, kick the bucket. Either that or I’ll just send my cats over to their house.
