By Brett Auten Giving back to the community is an important part of the Western St. Charles County Chamber of Commerce. Join the chamber as they host the county’s largest Back to School Fair on Saturday, July 30 from 8 a.m. to noon at Morning Star Church. Morning Star is located at 1600 Feise Road in Dardenne Prairie. There will be free school supplies and many activities for families.

“This is our Fourth Annual Back to School Fair,” said Tony Mathews, President/CEO of the chamber. “The event has grown substantially over the past four years and we are hoping we can help more families this year start their school year off in a positive direction.”

Free school supplies will be given out to children at the event from booths and the Western St. Charles County Chamber will have drawstring backpacks with supplies for the first 1,500 kids through the event.

Kids will also have the opportunity to take pictures with Princess Sofia and a super hero provided by Simply a Princess & Friends. The Kids Area will be sponsored

by The Sparrow’s Nest Maternity Home.

Each booth will feature a fun activity for children to participate in. You will have the opportunity to learn about great businesses in the area and discover how those businesses can serve your needs. The

fair will also feature: free bike helmets (limited quantity) provided by Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital, Oberweis home delivery drink samples, free refreshments, Wentzville Fire Protection District fire trucks, St. Charles County Ambulance District ambulances, activities for children, giveaways and prizes.

This year’s focus is on local families.

“We are very excited to see our local residents receive free school supplies, gather information from local business, and have a great time!” said Jeff Unterreiner, Chairman of the chamber. “The Western St. Charles County Chamber of Commerce strives to help our community and help our local businesses connect with consumers.”

Call for vendors selling art, high-end crafts and unique creations at O’Fallon’s 2016 Fall Fest If you are an artist or upscale crafter, apply for booth space to sell your original creations at O’Fallon, Missouri’s annual Fall Fest. The event will be held in Civic Park 6 – 10 p.m. on Oct. 7, and from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. on Oct. 8.

O’Fallon’s popular Fall Fest is known for vendors selling home and garden décor, flowers, fall-to-winter holiday gifts and decorations, art, trendy original crafts, jewelry, unique accessories, delicious festival food and beverages, and free kids’ activities and bluegrass music throughout the day.

Booth space for artists and crafters is available outdoors in the park at $25 for a 10-by-10-foot space. Electricity and tent canopies are extra. The deadline to apply for a booth is 4 p.m. on Sept. 1.

Wentzville student wins national title Chloe Layton, Wentzville Middle School student and daughter of Jerry and Stacey Layton, recently won the national title of America’s U.S. Tween. She recently competed in Clearwater Beach, Florida against other girls from all over the United States aged 9-12 at the Americas U.S. Miss National Scholarship Program.

Along with an amazing prize package, Chloe has also won a trip to attend the Miss America Pageant in Atlantic City and a trip to Disney World.

The scholarship program is judged on academic achievement, volunteer service, resume, personality wear, evening gown and a personal interview. Emphasis is placed on the importance of gaining self-confidence and learning new skills, as well as setting and achieving personal goals.

Chloe is an honor-roll student actively involved in her community and volunteer service.

Central County Fire & Rescue announces position changes There are three new captains, one new inspector, one new engineer and three new firefighter-paramedics at Central County Fire & Rescue (CCFR). The promotions fill positions that were left open following retirements over the last year, three of which happened this summer.

Inspectors Keith Hargrove and Ginger Alcorn, and Administrative Assistant Darlene Clayton recently retired. Hargrove was with CCFR for 34 years; Clayton served for 17 years, and Alcorn was with the district for 12 years.

Captain Jim Densmore, who has been with CCFR for 21 years, was promoted to inspector. In this role, he will perform fire inspections, conduct plan reviews and assist with fire investigations.

Firefighter Ray Hemenway, who has served for 25 years, and Engineers Tim Mosher and Eric Graham, who have both been with the district for 18 years, were promoted to captain. They will each lead a three to four person engine company and serve as incident commanders in emergency situations. They will also coordinate, oversee

and recommend training for their companies.

In addition to holding their State Firefighter I and II certifications, the new captains also all hold their State Fire Office I certification. Captain Mosher has a Fire Officer II certification and is a licensed EMT and Hazardous Materials Technician. Captain Graham holds an associate’s degree in applied science from East Central College and is a licensed EMT-paramedic. He is a member of the technical rescue team and a fire academy instructor who has his Fire Service Instructor and Incident

Safety Officer certifications. He has served as an acting captain since 2002.

Firefighter Dennis Murray, who has been with CCFR for 19 years, was promoted to engineer. In this role, he is responsible for driving and operating the fire truck during emergency situations.

“We are fortunate to have a strong group of leaders within CCFR. These individuals are going to be a great asset to our team and will be positive leaders for our next generation of firefighters,” Chief Dan Aubuchon says.

paramedics were hired to fill the vacancies from these promotions. Austin Wuertz, Mike Hollingsworth, and Spencer Garrett all started with the district on July 1.

“Our community is changing, and there is a need for our first responders to have additional medical training, which is why all of our new hires will be certified paramedics in addition to trained firefighters.

Our three newest firefighters have the background and skills to provide a range of highquality emergency services to our residents,” Aubuchon says.

Monsanto Fund awards grant to Girl Scouts of Eastern Missouri Once a hypothesis of the distant future, robots are now commonplace in today’s society. Thanks to a $25,000 grant from the Monsanto Fund, Girl Scouts of Eastern Missouri is able to provide more opportunities for girls throughout the area to discover robotics.

Girl Scouts of Eastern Missouri promotes STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) as one of its three programmatic focus areas, along with Money Management and Health. As part of its robust STEM curriculum, Girl Scouts of Eastern Missouri supports 42 FIRST Robotics troops. Support from community partners such as the Monsanto Fund has helped Girl Scouts grow its number of robotics troops from only five when the FIRST program launched in 2009. The organization plans to increase the amount of FIRST

teams to 80 within the next two years. Participating in FIRST provides Girl Scouts an opportunity to explore STEM fields, discover their passions and gain valuable knowledge that will help them succeed as future industry leaders.

“We are grateful for the Monsanto Fund’s investment in girls,” said Bonnie Barczykowski, Girl Scouts of Eastern Missouri CEO. “By introducing girls to STEM at a young age, we are able to excite them about STEM as well as give them a glimpse of careers they might not otherwise have considered. This grant ensures a new generation of young women can become future leaders in our area, in STEM industries and beyond.”

The Monsanto Fund has been an innovative philanthropic leader since 1964. The organization

provides assistance to communities around the world, ranging from education and farmer training programs to creating access to clean water and public safety.

“Providing educational opportunities in STEM fields through this FIRST Robotics program allows girls to develop the skills tomorrow’s leaders will need in order to address challenges like climate change and feeding a growing population,” said Michelle Insco, Monsanto Fund program officer. “Girl Scouts of Eastern Missouri is challenging girls to work together to develop innovative solutions to real-world STEM challenges through this program, and Monsanto Fund is proud to be a partner in these efforts.”

The Division of Environmental Health and Protection’s Mosquito Control Unit works with St. Charles County residents to control nuisance mosquitoes and the diseases they may carry. If mosquitoes become a problem in your neighborhood, you can now make an online request for spraying or habitat treatment using a computer or smart phone app.

By registering and using St. Charles County’s “Report a Concern” tool, residents living in unincorporated St. Charles County or within the city limits of Augusta, Cottleville, Dardenne Prairie, Flint Hill, Lake Saint Louis, Portage des Sioux, Weldon Spring, Weldon Spring Heights and Wentzville can request mosquito control treatment. “Report a Concern” can be found at www.sccmo.org or through mobile download of the St. Charles County Government app, and those without Internet access may call 636-949-

Use an insect repellent containing DEET, picaridin, IR 3535, or oil of lemon eucalyptus whenever outdoors to discourage mosquitoes from biting.

2. Drain areas where water collects, clean clogged gutters, remove trash and disrupt fountains or bird baths to eliminate potential breeding areas around homes.

and keep distractions to a minimum and make sure you follow up on what they have been doing during that study time.

Rewarding consistent and positive behavior Staying up a little late on the weekend could be a reward for going to bed on time during the week. Extra time to watch TV or play video games could be a reward for completing homework assignments. In addition to the rewards, make sure you provide praise and encouragement and acknowledge their strengths whenever possible.

What to do after a bad day or a set back If your child has a bad day, try to re-teach the positive behaviors which will help increase the likelihood of success for the next time. Studies show that children with ADD and ADHD respond well to positive reinforcements and not criticism.

Barnes-Jewish St. Peters Hospital gives back to community through a Day of Play There were some famous faces among the 450 people who came out to Barnes-Jewish St. Peters Hospital’s Day of Play on June 25.

Darth Vader and a host of Star Wars characters from the 501st Midwest Garrison welcomed visitors to check out the free health screenings, bicycle helmet checks and kids fitness challenges.

“Day of Play is just one way Barnes-Jewish St. Peters and Progress West Hospitals give back to the community,” said community outreach director Kristin Williams. “We are always seeking new ways to partner with our friends and neighbors in St. Charles County, and to provide health education opportunities in fun and interesting ways.”

Healthy nutrition habits start early in life

Optimal health is achieved through establishing healthy lifestyles early in life. If we can make healthy food choices from a young age, it can significantly reduce the occurrence and severity of a variety of chronic diseases, leading to a healthier life.

It’s important to aim for proper nutrition in early childhood because when kids start out on the right food, they are more likely to carry these healthy eating habits into adulthood.

What are some of the common nutritional pitfalls?

There is a lot of nutrition misinformation out there, which makes it really confusing to know what we should and shouldn’t do. It seems like there is always a new study coming out that suggests we should go

low carb or high protein or low fat or gluten-free… The truth is that there’s no “one-size-fits-all” plan. What may be good for one person may not be good for another. For example, someone with diabetes would have to pay close attention to their carbohydrate intake, whereas someone with kidney disease would have to pay attention to their protein and sodium levels.

How important is water intake?

It’s very important to stay hydrated all the time, especially on hot summer days. Our bodies are more than 60 percent water – if we don’t drink enough water, we can quickly become dehydrated. We can survive three weeks without food, but only three-to-five days without water. Water also helps with the absorption of nutrients from the food we eat and with medication.

For our bodies to work properly,

we have to make sure we are adequately hydrated.

Is there a difference between eating fruits and vegetables that are fresh vs. frozen?

Fresh produce can lose some of the nutrients in the days and weeks after it’s picked and before it gets to us in the market. Frozen fruits and vegetables, if frozen right after picking, don’t lose as many nutrients. But really, whether they are fresh, frozen or canned, all fruits and vegetables are good and contribute to a healthy diet.

How often do our nutritional needs change throughout our lives?

Our nutrition needs are changing constantly throughout our lives. If you’re sick, if you have a wound, if you are a baby, toddler or adult, if you’re diabetic, if you’re pregnant, if you’re someone with kidney disease, if you are an athlete or couch potato, all have very different nutritional needs.

If summer travel plans frequently keep you away from home, it can be a challenge to maintain your regular fitness routine. With dedication, planning and a little creativity, you can use these tips from fitness entrepreneur Cassey Ho to maintain your workout regimen no matter where your travels take you.

1. Pack for fitness Before your trip, research the hotel, nearby fitness facilities or area parks and pack accordingly. Be sure to bring along the essentials, such as athletic shoes and exercise clothing; easily portable equipment such as a jump rope, resistance bands or yoga mat; and technology to support your workout like your smartphone and headphones.

2. Keep active as you go Whether you’re traveling by car, train or plane, summer travel can force you to sit for long periods. To fit some activity into your travel, wear your walking or running shoes. If you’re traveling by plane, stroll through the airport terminal rather than sitting at the gate if you have a layover or delay. When traveling by train walk through the cars occasionally. If you’re driving, take breaks to get out and stretch.

3. Work in a workout When you arrive at your destination, set the tone for your trip by working out right away or scheduling time for a workout and treating it as an important appointment. Consider these simple ways to squeeze in some physical activity: • Go for a quick run in the area near your hotel – it’s a great way to burn calories, and it’s the perfect opportunity to explore your destination!

• Walk the hotel halls – or get your daily steps logged at a local attraction or meeting facility. Take the stairs when possible and use your phone’s GPS to map out a path or find a local park or trail.

• For a quick burst of cardio, power through a few sets of jumping jacks in your room.

• If you’ve got space in your hotel room, use your tablet or smartphone to find a yoga or aerobics workout and follow along.

• Try pushups, planks and squats, all of which rely on your own body mass for resistance.

• Swim laps in the hotel pool.

4. Make healthy dining choices When dining out, make sensible choices. Take the time to evaluate the menu. Select foods that are steamed, roasted or broiled, and avoid fried foods. Ask for dressings and sauces on the side. If you’ll be in town for more than a day or two, take time to visit a local grocery store to stock up on fresh, healthy snacks, such as fruit, vegetables, hummus and unsalted nuts, for your hotel room.

Spare the food and spoil the child The annual family vacation is now but a fond memory with the kids and babies gone home.

The little poop-machines were a joy to be with, but I’m sure glad I don’t have to feed them anymore. It was enough that their mommies became short-order cooks and pulled out pencils from behind their ears to write down individualized menus as they cowed to each demand. But meal prep became insufferable with all the new-fangled food allergies out there.

No, I’m not talking about the gluten-free trend or the lactose intolerance thing or even peanut allergies. I’m talking about the dreaded allergen, StuChi (Stubborn Child). This manifested itself in forms such as, breakfast intolerance; the inability to swallow anything before 10 a.m.; green food aversions, any shade of green caused an immediate outbreak of cries, screams and general grouchiness; the vegetable/fruit allergy – basically anything that grew from a seed produced an adverse reaction. The children’s faces suddenly contorted into hideous, gargoyle-like expressions. And then there was the dreaded crust-free sensitivity. The mere sight of bread ends resulted in uncontrollable arm spasms causing plates to be pushed onto the floor.

Today’s kids are definitely pampered. There are too

many selections, especially with fast food restaurants on every corner offering specialty packaged meals filled with toys, treats and sugary drinks.

Back in my day, we had two choices: eat or waste away.

Going to a restaurant was only for special occasions – like, if grandma died. Then we got to eat out at the one and only diner in town. Parents always ordered.

None of this indulging, “Honey Biscuits, what expensive meal choice does your little mouth feel like spitting out all over the floor today?”

Oh sure, a child might get bold and dare make a

sassy comment about his order, but it was to his immediate peril.

After uttering, “I don’t want fish sticks!” that child would be lead out of the establishment by the ear to spend the rest of the evening thinking over his cheekiness in the back of the car…where there weren’t any seatbelts. Then after going a day or two without eating, he would soon develop an overwhelming desire to suck down his plate of cold, brittle and stuck-to-theplate fish sticks and beg, “More please!”

The next family get-together is at my house with my rules. I’m making fish stick and green bean sandwiches…with the crusts and no substitutes.

Local Author Spotlight: Ann Chandonnet Ann Chandonnet grew up on a farm in Massachusetts and has a life-long interest in history and food history. After earning an MS degree from the University of Wisconsin, she taught English at Kodiak High School. She was then hired as an English instructor at her alma mater, Lowell University. After four years in California, she and her husband Fernand lived in Alaska for 33 years. She was a reporter for The Anchorage Times for 10 years and for the Juneau Empire for three years. Recently the couple retired to Lake St. Louis to be nearer to Alex, the younger of their two sons, and his family in Dardenne Prairie. Chandonnet has been a published poet since she was a teenager, and has also written guidebooks, book reviews and magazine articles. Her non-fiction book “Write Quick” (2010) was based on 150 unpublished family Civil War letters, and illustrated with period photos and postcards. Her work has won several national prizes.

Her latest book, “Barn Raising and Cemetery Cleanings,” deals with the foods associated with American celebrations and social gatherings that are no longer in vogue – such as quilting bees, apple parings, singing schools, nut cracks, cabin raisings, booya picnics and muster days. It contains photos as well as more than 150 recipes.

Professional women’s team wins eighth in a row The St. Louis Surge women’s professional basketball team ended a successful regular season campaign with its 95-58 victory over Kansas City Majestics recently at UMSL’s Mark Twain Building.

The victory gave the Surge a 9-1 record for the season and its eighth-straight triumph and clinched the top seed for the Midwest Division tournament of the Women’s Blue Chip Basketball League (WBCBL). In the four-team, bracketed set-up, the Surge plays fourth-seeded Iowa Force in a semifinal.

The St. Louis team won all five of its games held at Mark Twain Building this season, and maintain an unblemished mark (17-0) since its 2014 home opener and now head into the WBCBL post-season.

“It seems like a whole new season for us now,” said Surge guard Rebecca Harris following Saturday’s 37-point win. “Our regular season record means nothing at this point. It’s a whole new ball game so now we have to go back and hit practice hard and work on a few things.”

Rascal pitcher flirts with no hitter The River City Rascals play professional baseball in the West Division of the Frontier League at the CarShield Field in O’Fallon.

Recently picture Tim Koons took a no-hit bid into the sixth inning but was out-dueled by Washington Wild Things righthander Trevor Foss as he threw his third completegame shutout of the year to defeat the Rascals 3-0.

Rascal’s starter Koons was prominent on the mound allowing just one baserunner in the first five innings on a walk.

He allowed two runs at one point but rebounded with a strong start to the seventh inning including getting his sixth strikeout of the night. After that the Wild Things added a run to secure the win. Jason Zgardowski took over for Koons in the eighth and in his Rascals debut struck out one and

“Ghostbusters”

Hollywood’s unfortunate devotion to reboots Recently, a colleague of mine asked about the increasing number of movie reboots, in particular the all-female reinvention of “Ghostbusters.” He wondered if screenwriters and studios simply ran out of ideas and are now relying on previous winning formulas. Based on the evidence, that seems to be the case.

Unfortunately, director Paul Feig’s reimagining of the classic 1984 comedy is, in a word, disappointing. With top comedic talent such as Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy and Leslie Jones, one would expect the 2016 version to break new ground. Unfortunately, even Kate McKinnon’s amusing performance could not save this film from the pits of mediocrity.

Feig himself has taken to social media to defend the film and, in particular, spiteful attacks on Leslie Jones. To her credit, Jones has the most grounded scenes in the whole production. Protective instincts aside, Feig can’t save Jones or the other cast members from bad writing, especially Chris Hemsworth in his turn as a dim-bulb secretary.

Some movies benefit greatly, though, from new casts and new perspectives. Actors Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto revived the 50-year-old “Star Trek” franchise, adding depth to the characters along the way. Audiences learn more about Captain Kirk and what motivates him. Quinto’s Spock retains the logical demeanor from Leonard Nimoy’s era while letting the Vulcan actually have a loving relationship with a woman.

On the other hand, the much-maligned “Fantastic Four” franchise never captured the joy Stan Lee and Jack Kirby brought to the printed pages. Iconic film director Roger Corman did a fantastic job with just a one million-dollar budget. His version never made it to the-

aters, though, but bootlegs are readily available at most comic-book conventions.

Speaking of comics, Disney executives are padding their retirement and bank accounts thanks to Marvel. This team-up produced some of the best superhero movies to date. Even a lesser-known property like “Guardians of the Galaxy” thrived under the stewardship of Disney. “Ant-Man,” a founding member of “The

Avengers” in the comics, also made a huge debut in 2015.

Disney’s treatment of “Star Wars” also has been well-done. Instead of redoing the first 6 episodes, the studio recruited the original core cast members for “Episode 7,” giving us new characters to love and admire. That was, in part, an act of self-preservation because fans would have balked at anyone other than Harrison Ford playing Han Solo.

With so many underutilized resources out there, it’s easy to assume that most of Hollywood simply has become lazy and complacent. “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” has been remade, but no one wants to touch “Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator,” the even darker sequel by author Roald Dahl.

Tim Burton and Johnny Depp could have a field day with this one.

Any screenwriter worth their salt should be haunting libraries and comic books stores to find those hidden gems and let their imagination run wild. Going to the same well too many times doesn’t do anyone any good.
