Broadway and film star Harvey Fierstein to open the festival 2013 festival co-chairs Gail Feldstein & Judy Kramer are pleased to announce Harvey Fierstein as the keynote speaker for the 35th Annual St. Louis Jewish Book Festival. On Sunday, November 3rd at the JCC in Creve Coeur, Mike Isaacson (executive producer of The Muny) will lead a live on-stage conversation with Fierstein at 7pm, kicking off the two week festival.

As a multiple Tony Award winner, Fierstein may be best known for the roles he’s played in Hairspray and Fiddler on the Roof. But that unmistakable voice is also the playwright behind over 10 Broadway hits including recent successes Newsies and Kinky Boots. Also a comedian, singer, songwriter, activist, and author, Fierstein has been a staple on TV throughout the years, from winning an Emmy for his

work on Cheers to his guest spots on The Good Wife. He’s entertained young and old on the big screen voicing Yao in the Mulan films, running from aliens in Independence Day, and helping Robin Williams get in touch with his feminine side in Mrs. Doubtfire.

Fierstein’s children’s book The Sissy Duckling (now in its 5th printing) will be featured at the festival and available to purchase in the festival bookstore. Attendees at the opening night event will have the opportunity to get their book signed by Fierstein.

This year’s Festival will run November 3 - 17 with a special St. Louis Symphony concert event closing out the November events on the final evening. In addition See JEWISH BOOK FESTIVAL page 2

The festival, a program of the Jewish Community Center, presents literary, media, business, cultural, sports and entertainment luminaries to audiences which number more than 20,000 each November, the largest attendance of Jewish book festivals and fairs in the United States, in honor of National Jewish Book Month. The festival also

presents author programs, book-signings and special events, with newly released books on a variety of subjects, and authors of all religions, throughout the calendar year.

Author programs are open to the public and run approximately 60-90 minutes. They include an audience question and answer period and book signing. Books are sold at each event. Festival events are coordinated by the J’s Cultural Arts Department, co-sponsored by more than 50 community organizations, and supported by corporate and individual sponsors. Monies raised from the festival and literary events go to J scholarships and cultural arts programming for all ages. The J is one of the largest United Way partner agencies serving St. Louis, regardless of race or religion.

Sharsheret’s Genetic Counselor Danielle Singer and Dr. Kristin Zorn, director of the Division of Gynecologic Oncology, UAMS College of Medicine, will discuss the basics of BRCA, lynch syndrome, the genetic counseling process, and the psychosocial implications of genetic testing for individuals and families. The webinar is presented by the National Ovarian Cancer Coalition.

Following the webinar, local expert Heidi Beaver, MPH, CGC will answer questions for the participants in attendance.

Hazelwood Spooktacular Halloween Party Parents looking for a safe, dry and fun way for their children to celebrate Halloween should mark their calendar to attend the City of Hazelwood’s “Halloween Happenings” scheduled for Thursday, October 31, from 6:30 - 9pm. The event will be held at the Hazelwood Community Center, 1186 Teson Road, in White Birch Park.

HALLOWEEN HAPPENINGS Sponsored by the Hazelwood Parks and Recreation Division, this ghoulish event is free and open to the public. Kids attending the event will receive a grab bag of goodies. They will also have a haunting good time playing spirited games, guessing the number of candy pieces in a glass pumpkin jar and going on a Halloween hayride. The costume contest begins at 7:20pm for the Hey, it’s the Fonz – A “Happy Days” flashback to yesteryear following groups: Age 2 & Under; Ages 3-5 Years; Ages occurred when this boy showed up at Hazelwood’s Hal6-8 Years; Ages 9-11 Years; Ages 12-15 Years; and Ages loween Happenings last year and competed in the annual costume contest for six age groups.

Great Day St. Louis

Matt Chambers co-host of Great Day St. Louis, took his show live on the front lawn of the Florissant City Hall on Friday, October 11. Great Day St. Louis was there to promote the 16th Annual Fall Festival.

Mayor Schneider and Karen Goodwin, who is the co-chairman of the Fall Festival, spoke in the first segment sharing highlights of this year’s event. Community/Media Relations Officer Andy Haarmann closed out the first segment talking about the 2nd Annual Classic Car Show sponsored by the Florissant Police Welfare Association to benefit the K-9 Unit.

In the second segment Matt Chambers spoke with Florissant Civic Center Theater Manager Gary Gaydos to discuss the great entertainment scheduled for the Fall Festival additional information about the Fall Festival and the great shows that will be coming soon to the theater.

Kittie Moller and the Fanfare Band gave a performed a preview of their upcoming performance at the Fall Festival. K-9 Officer Pat O’Fallon had classic cars lined up at City Hall, children from Mother Hen Day Care, Cat at the Hat, a clown and representatives from Baronwood Kennels were there. Members of the Chamber, Knights and Council Members Tim Lee, Pat Stinnett and Jackie Pagano were on hand.

Clean Medicine Cabinets To Safeguard Against Abuse

Girl Scouts Fall Products from Ashdon Farms

In an effort to help residents get rid of expired, unused and unwanted prescription drugs in medicine cabinets that could be abused by family members, the Hazelwood Police Department (HPD) is partnering with the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) for the 7th National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day on Saturday, October 26, from 10am - 2pm. The HPD will set up two collection sites where people can drop off their medications without being questioned or asked for identification.

According to the results of a national survey released by The Partnership at Drugfree. org and the MetLife Foundation, medicine abuse among adolescents is a growing problem. The study revealed that one in four teens (24%) reported having misused or abused a prescription drug at least once in their lifetime. This statistic has jumped from 18% in 2008, a 33% increase over a five-year period.

Of those kids who said they abused Rx medications, one in five (20%) has done so before the age of 14. More than a quarter of teens (27%) mistakenly believe that misusing and abusing prescription drugs is safer than using street drugs like cocaine, heroin or crystal meth. And, one in eight teens (13%) now report they’ve taken stimulants such as Ritalin and Addrall when it wasn’t prescribed for them, at least once in their

When a Girl Scout knocks on your door this month, she will bring leadership skills and product knowledge with her, just in time for holiday gift giving.

October 12 was the Fall Product Program kick-off and one of the best ways for Girl Scout troops to earn funds for troop activities. Last year, some troops earned more than $800 by selling Fall Products.

Troops will take initial orders from October 12-26 with additional orders taken from October 27-December 1. Products will be delivered after November 21, and Fall Product Booths will open from November 21-December 1.

The Fall Product Program is an integral component of the Girl Scout Leadership Experience, where girls gain hands-on experience with five skills linked to leadership and financial literacy: goal setting, decision making, money management, people skills and business ethics. It grows girls’ confidence, skills and financial competence and prepares them for the Girl Scout Cookie Program.

There are rewards for participating girls, including drawings for third-generation Apple iPads®.

Girl Scouts are happy to announce that its Fall Product Program partner this year is Ashdon Farms, a licensed Girl Scout vendor since 1986. It offers a wide selection of delectable nuts and candies, including distinctive molded chocolates that are not sold in stores. Ashdon Farms is also known for its Girl Scout keepsake tins, which are customer favorites.

In addition, magazine subscriptions will be sold in partnership with M2 Media Group. It offers online sales of new and renewed subscriptions to more than 900 popular magazines at lower-thannewsstand prices. M2 Media Group developed an engaging online marketing tool where girls record sales videos as part of their campaigns and collect “promises” for candy and nut orders, which they deliver to customers. These digital tools provide girls with opportunities to enhance their technological skills.

Customers can also donate candy, nuts or magazine subscriptions to military personnel through “Project Thank You.” Each $5 donation will send one can of Ashdon Farms products to the USO. In addition, a $5 donation will provide military personnel with magazine subscriptions for one year.

The nuts, candies, Girl Scout tins and magazine subscriptions make wonderful gifts that arrive in time for the holidays and support Girl Scouts. All of the proceeds stay within our community to benefit area girls.

The HPD will be setting up two collection points, making it easy for the public to drop off their unwanted medications without being bothered. One of them will be placed at the street curb in front of Hazelwood City Hall, 415 Elm Grove Lane, so motorists can drive up next to the collection box, drop them in and then leave. In case of rain, signs will be posted directing people to the collection box placed inside the lobby area, near the front entrance. The other collection site will be the Police Sub-Station at St. Louis Outlet Mall. A collection box will be placed just inside the front door.

The HPD plans to continue participating in the DEA’s National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day events until a more uniform system of disposing prescription drugs is set up. Good News: Florissant Man Gives Service; Wins Award Sherman Lindsey, a cook at Life Care Center of Florissant received Life Care Centers of America’s Central Division Whatever It Takes And Then Some Award on September 24 for his dedication to customer service.

Executives from Life Care awarded Lindsey a $1,000 cash prize during an awards session at the company’sAnnual Management Meeting. He was chosen from among thousands of associates in the Central Division and was one of only seven associates from Life Care’s more than 220 facilities nationwide to receive the award.

While he does his job well daily, Lindsey was particularly praised for several specific acts of caring in 2012.

“His bond with a special patient exemplifies his dedication,” associates shared in their nomination. “We had a young patient with advanced cancer. She had no family, and her power of attorney was a former co-worker. She was very depressed and would frequently refuse meals, therapy and other treatments. After getting to know her, Sherman would come early every day and spend time with her. They would talk, pray and laugh.”

Lindsey also volunteers his skills as a mechanic and sometimes works on associates’ vehicles at no cost. Each day, before he leaves the center, he makes rounds through the building and checks on each resident, making sure their needs are met.

During the ceremony, Lindsey shared, “What really motivates me is that I love all our residents. I put myself in their position.”

Local Receives Award for Excellence in Cancer-Fighting Advocacy Work Karen McKay of Florissant, was awarded ACT! Lead of the Year by the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN) for her dedicated volunteer and advocacy work to help make cancer a national priority.

This annual award is given to a lead congressional district volunteer who has demonstrated unfailing leadership advocating for ACS CAN’s areas of cancerrelated public policy.

Karen leads the Ambassador Constituent Team (ACT!) in Congressional District 1 for ACS CAN, the advocacy affiliate of the American Cancer Society. ACS CAN is the nation’s largest cancer advocacy organization and supports evidence-based policy and legislative solutions designed to eliminate cancer as a major health problem. As the ACT! Lead, Karen serves as the primary volunteer contact with District 1 lawmakers and recruits and manages other local volunteers to lead district advocacy and fundraising efforts.

Karen has been a volunteer with the American Cancer Society for many years as a leader for her local Relay For Life event and has volunteered with the ACS CAN since it began over 10 years ago.

Community Dedicates and Tours New Media Convergence Center and Radio Station

While sitting in the new spacious studio of KRHS-90.1 FM radio, Ritenour High School senior DJs Jeremy Fips and Maddie Williams announced, “We’re on the air,” to open the dedication ceremony for the high school’s radio station and new Media Convergence Center on Saturday, October 5.

While KRHS radio carried the dedication live while also live streaming it over the Internet, more than 100 Ritenour alumni, students, families and friends packed the new Media Convergence Center to formally celebrate the completion of the last project of the $50 million Proposition K bond issue program that voters overwhelmingly passed in 2008.

The new $1.25 million center opened at the beginning of the 2013-14 school year with 5,000 square feet of space dedicated to the radio station, as well as media convergence, video production, print news and yearbook. Next year, courses in TV production also will be offered. The center is located in the area that formerly housed an old gym, and orchestra and band rooms. Those rooms were relocated into the new Ritenour High School auditorium, which also was built as part of Proposition K. Following the ceremony, Ritenour High School students gave tours to visitors that allowed them to see and hear about how students are gaining valuable experience in a professional setting, using professional technology to produce videos, do live radio broadcasts, and a student newspaper and yearbook.

KRHS, which began operating in 1977 at Ritenour High School as KRSH radio, is the only high school radio station in Missouri licensed by the Federal Communication Commission (FCC). It is a 10-watt station that can be heard within an approximate 5-mile radius of Ritenour High School.

College Planning Family Night North County Christian School will again be presenting its College Planning Family Night on Tuesday, October 29, from 7 - 9pm in the Cafeteria. This is a fast-paced activity that will be interesting and informative to families with students of all ages.

The one-hour agenda includes five-minute presentations from five different colleges or universities, from a college financial aid officer, from an ACT test specialist, and from NCCS alumni. This program offers a broad overview of the post-secondary education search, but also the opportunity to speak in more depth with the presenters at their individual tables afterwards.

Represented will be St Louis University, Truman State University, Hannibal-LaGrange University, St Louis Community College, and Ranken Technical College. Student Council representatives will be acting as our hosts and serving light refreshments.

Hazelwood Senior Wins First Place in Student Video Contest RJ Fentress, a senior at Hazelwood West High School, received first place and a $1,000 cash prize in the Missouri School Boards’ Association’s “2013 What’s Super About Public Schools” student video contest. Students were challenged to produce a 60-second video that conveyed the contest theme and was related to at least one of the recommendations in the Missouri Public Education Vision Project Report. The video was featured at the 2013 Annual Conference sponsored by MSBA in conjunction with the Missouri Association of School Administrators.

Missouri River Country, 100 Miles of Stories and Scenery from Hermann to the Confluence by Dan Burkhardt, pays tribute to a plethora of natural wonders that lie right under our noses, but which we too often take for granted.

Here’s a coffee table book that would make a great gift, but one you’ll want to display in your home as well, so you’d better plan on buying a couple of copies. All proceeds from the sale of the book go to the Katy Land Trust, a mission begun to better connect Missourians with the countryside around them.

Comprised of more than 60 essays, penned by a vast range of writers, including Gov. Jay Nixon, and local folks whose names you’ll recognize, Missouri River Country, won’t bog you down in the mundane. The heartfelt contributions pay equal homage to our area’s historical figures, and present-day farmers who make a living off Missouri River bottomland, dealing with floods and their accompanying nightmares.

Expect to also learn more about Missouri’s bounty—wine, beer and the farm-to-table movement in essays written by St. Louis restaurateurs, Gerard Ford Craft and Bill Cardwell. These topics are just a sample of what’s in store for readers.

Missouri River Country isn’t comprised of text-heavy pages—most are lavishly graced with fullcolor spreads by local photographers and artists, among them Curt Dennison and Danny Brown, and artist Gary Lucy. Local readers will recognize many of the sights pictured—Lucy’s depiction of “The Campsite at Tavern Creek,” scenes along Highway 94, the river at sunset, tunnels formed by the trees along the Katy Trail, and a rainbow’s palette of birds at Shaw Nature Reserve.

While watching a movie based on a Ben Mezrich book, it is difficult not to feel betrayed. Mezrich made his mark with Bringing Down the House, a reportedly true tale about card counting college kids that became the successful thriller 21. Accidental Billionaires, his novel about the founding of Facebook, was turned into the critically-acclaimed 2010 film The Social Network.

Yet, in both cases, Mezrich’s books were called in question over their accuracy. Runner Runner, the new Ben Affleck/Justin Timberlake thriller based on Mezrich’s Straight Flush, suffers from the same muddling of fact and fiction. Gary Baute Rams May Have Lost More Than Game The St. Louis professional football team never did get on a roll in the recent loss to the Carolina Panthers this past Sunday 30-15. Besides dropping the game, they had a scare late in the game. With about five minutes in the game, Ram’s quarterback Sam Bradford, unable to find a receiver open, was running out of bounds when he awkwardly twisted his knee with the help of a Panther player. He left the game in much pain, and the severity of the injury is still in question.

A few highlights include: -Bradford completed 21-of-30 passes for 255 yards and one touchdown for a 93.1 quarterback rating.

Bradford has a touchdown pass in 11 consecutive games.

-Running back Zac Stacy tallied his first career touchdown on a 4-yard pass from Bradford.

-Wide receiver Brian Quick hauled in a career-long 73-yard reception from Bradford. The throw is Bradford’s longest this season.

-Defensive end Robert Quinn sacked Panthers QB

Cam Newton for a loss of 11 yards. The sack gave Quinn 7.0 sacks this season. Going into today’s game, Quinn led the National Football Conference in sacks.

A perfectly placed header by Yayish Pohtos who played for Rosati-Kain scored the first goal of the game off a corner kick from Eileen Koppy who played for Lindbergh. The Blue Jays held the 1-0 lead throughout the half and into the second half.

The Griffins of Fontbonne scored a goal in the 61st minute to tie the game up. A 20-yard shot by the Griffins hit the top half of the goal, giving them the 2-1 lead with 10 minutes left in the game.

Hockey Chill Drop Inaugural Game The St. Charles Chill, in front of their hometown fans, lost in a shootout to the Missouri Mavericks 3-2.

The Chill goalie Mathieu Corbeil made a series of great saves to end the first to keep the score close.

Jordan Fox was credited with the first goal in franchise history when a crossing pass was deflected into the Mavs net to close the gap to 2-1, where it stayed until the final minutes of the third period. David Strathman buried a one-timer to even the score at two.

Following a scoreless overtime, the Mavericks outscored the Chill in the shootout to notch the win.

The Chill will be back on the ice this Friday, October 25 at 7:05 at the Family Arena against the defending CHL Champion Allen Americans. *It is a long season St. Louis Blues Team Up With Chill The National Hockey League’s St. Louis Blues announced to have the St. Charles Chill as one of their development teams. “We’re excited and humbled to be part of the Blues organization,” commented by the Chill’s general manager and Head Coach Jamie Rivers.

This Halloween, throw a wickedly wonderful fete for family and friends. With help from the Wilton entertaining experts, you’ll have all the tricks to treat your guests to a spooky celebration that will leave them howling with delight.

Halloween’s not just for the kids anymore, so before you put on your costume, grab your baking and decorating supplies and get ready to let the creepy crawlers loose.

“Halloween is the one time of the year that you can take your decorating skills to the dark side,” said Nancy Siler, vice president of consumer affairs at Wilton. “From finishing pumpkin cookies with ghastly grins to creating creepy cakes decorated like graveyard skulls, it’s the perfect holiday to have some fun in the kitchen.”

Try these tips from the Wilton test kitchen for tasty and terrifying treats: • Creepy Cupcakes: Transform traditional cupcakes into other worldly creations by decorating with eyeballs, spider webs or candy corn. Set up

Tower of Horror Treats 4 eggs 2 cups applesauce Buttercream icing Directions: 1. Preheat oven to 325ºF. Prepare Dimensions Mini Skull Pan with vegetable pan spray.

2. In large bowl, combine flour, sugar, cinnamon, baking powder, baking soda, salt, cloves and nutmeg. In small bowl, whisk together oil, eggs and

applesauce. Add to dry ingredients, stirring until well combined. Fill each cavity about 2/3 full with 1/3 cup batter. Reserve remaining batter.

3. Bake 30 to 35 minutes or until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean. Cool in pan 15 minutes.

Remove to cooling grid and cool completely. Bake remaining batter as above.

4. To assemble, cut the domes off of fronts and backs of skulls and sandwich with buttercream icing.

Cookie Bones: Makes about 3 dozen cookies Ingredients: 1 cup (2 sticks) butter, softened 1-1/2 cups granulated sugar 1 egg 1-1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract 1/2 teaspoon almond extract (optional) 3 cups all-purpose flour 1 teaspoon salt

Directions: 1. Preheat oven to 350°F. Lightly spray Bones Cookie Pan cavities with vegetable pan spray.

2. In large bowl, beat butter and sugar with electric mixer at medium speed until well blended.

Beat in egg and extracts; mix well. Combine flour and salt; add to butter mixture. Beat until well blended. Press dough into prepared pan cavities,

filling 2/3 full.

3. Bake 9 to 10 minutes or until light brown around edges. Cool in pan 10 minutes. Turn pan over; lightly tap pan to remove cookies. Cool completely on cooling grid.

Directions: 1. Place assembled cakes and cookies on cooling grid positioned over cookie sheet. If desired, add yellow candy color to melted white candy; pour over cakes and cookies until well coated. Chill 10 to 15 minutes or until set. Repeat if needed.

2. Using disposable decorating bag, pipe melted black candy face details on skull cakes; chill 5 to 10 minutes or until set. Attach candy eyeballs to skulls with dots of melted candy. If desired, brush Color Dust highlights on candy-covered bones and

skulls.

3. Using melted white candy, secure four decorated skull cakes to cake base or serving platter, hold until set; insert decorated bone cookies between cakes. Add second row of skulls, positioning between the skulls below and securing with melted candy; hold until set. Add bone cookies between skulls. Secure final skull to top of tower with melted candy; hold until set. Arrange remaining bone cookies around base of cake tower.

To decorate and assemble: Ingredients: Yellow candy color from Primary Candy Color Set, optional 3 (12-ounce) bags White Candy Melts Candy, melted 1 (12-ounce) bag Black Candy Melts Candy, melted Large Candy Eyeballs Brown Color Dust, optional

Preheat oven to 350°F. Prepare 12-cavity Silicone Petite Pumpkin Mold with vegetable pan spray.

2. Prepare cake mix following package instructions; fill silicone mold cavities 2/3 full with cake batter. Bake 8 to 12 minutes or until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean. Remove from mold and cool completely.

3. Melt orange Candy Melts candy following package instructions. Dip lollipop sticks in melted candy; insert into bottom of cakes. Using spatula or butter knife, spread melted candy onto backs of cakes; chill in refrigerator 5 to 10 minutes or until set. Has Thinking Left for Parts Unknown?

I finally started using a GPS on long trips. It seemed pretty handy until I discovered it isn’t always right. After six or seven wrong turns, I threw it in the glove compartment and bought a road map.

It eventually occurred to my feeble mind this was a prime example of what has become of our modern society. We’re letting electronic toys do our thinking.

Of course, many will say that’s far too extreme—but is it?

An otherwise very bright loved one in her teen years went to a big box store to buy a man’s shirt. She said she needed it for her job to match the other employee’s shirts. After a period of wandering the labyrinthine aisles, she became distraught and dialed her mother on her cell phone and told her she couldn’t find the men’s clothing department. Then her mother became distraught because she had to tell her to look up at the rows of signs above the various departments.

She yelled, “Find one that says, ‘Men’s Clothing,’ you... you...arrggh!” She hung up.

If this isn’t a clear signal that some children’s thought processes have left for parts unknown, I don’t know what is. But is it only our children that have been relying on their electronic toys to do their think-

ing, or is it all of us? I did it with a GPS, so perhaps some other adults are guilty as well.

I saw a similar phenomenon when I watched a public utility worker trying to nail two boards together. He held them in place and discovered the nails were out of reach. He set them down and moved the nails closer.

Then he held them together with his elbow while he held a nail in place and reached for a hammer. It was also too far away. He put them all down again and moved the hammer within reach. Eventually, he drove some nails into the boards. Then he moved to his left to repeat the process for two more boards. Once again, he left the nails and then the hammer out of reach.

I envisioned this man in a laboratory cage along with chimpanzees and rats being studied by behavioral scientists. Of course, these aren’t real tradesman like carpenters. These are public utility workers who’re hired by Human Resource employees with degrees in corporate ladder-climbing and back-stabbing, among others. I knew one with a degree in accounting. I suppose she could perceive an applicant’s ability to balance a checkbook but this unfortunate process is SOP for public utilities. They’re subject

to the whims of politicians with friends and relatives who need jobs. Aptitude is sometimes overlooked in favor of free hockey tickets.

When I finally saw two female teenagers walking down the street together while texting each other, I realized the younger generation was in serious trouble. Some of them seem not to know how to think or communicate beyond the use of electronic gizmos. I admit that my ability to use cell phones is on a level with a dog’s ability to use can openers. I fully understand how engines work, but I don’t understand how cell phones work or, more to the point, why they don’t work.

I’m sure there is some animosity involved here. I dislike telephone interruptions while I’m busy...or even when I’m not busy.

I can, however, find the men’s clothing department without calling someone. I admit I sometimes accuse management of moving it around to confuse me.

Maybe they do that so I’ll buy one of their cell phones with GPS. Joe Morice is Community News’s blue-collar philosopher.
