Hazelwood’s Harvestfest offers full day of family fun Autumn has come rolling in and people will now take time to celebrate the bounty. In Hazelwood, Harvestfest celebrates the great bounty of community. The city will present the annual fall festival from 9:30 am to 6 pm Saturday, Sept. 13, at Howdershell Park, 6810 Howdershell Rd. “It’s been going on for a few years. It’s basically a way for the city to express its appreciation to residents for making Hazelwood a great community and it offers a full day of fun activities for the whole family,” said Tim Davidson, communications manager for the city of Hazelwood. “This is our opportunity to showcase our community to outsiders and show them all that Hazelwood has to offer.” New activities for this year’s event will include video game play through the Game-Time Mobile Entertainment System and the Miss Hazelwood Dance Party. From 9:30 am to 12:30 pm, gamers can play Call to Duty: Black Ops, Halo 4, NCAA Football 13, MLB 2K 13, NBA 2K 14, Mario Kart 8 and many other games at the Game-Time Mobile Entertainment System. The vehicle boasts hi-performance sound, mood lighting and climate control. The Miss Hazelwood Dance Party will be hosted from 12:30 to 2 pm by Miss Hazelwood 2013 Paige Frye, who will celebrate her reign as queen and introduce everyone to the new Miss Hazelwood. A DJ will play dance music and there will be games for the kids. Davidson said the Teen Beach Party that Radio Disney hosted at last year’s Harvestfest was a success, but the city
wanted to make Miss Hazelwood a part of it for this year. “We thought we could probably do our own twist with the program and give young kids the opportunity to meet Miss Hazelwood, and possibly interest young girls to be in the Miss Hazelwood competition when they reach the 15- to 18-yearold age range, and just create a fun time for kids to dance around and do different games,” he said. Just one of the fun games scheduled during the dance party is Freeze Frame. Kids will dance and, when the music stops, they will have to freeze in a pose. Prizes will be given to the kids who make the funniest pose. “We found that there are certain traditional activities that people like to do year after year,” Davidson said. “We try to bring those back, but we also try to find some new activities that enhance the quality for residents and people outside of Hazelwood.” Activities returning to Harvestfest include a petting zoo from 10 am to noon, the Gypsy Rose III Landship from 10 am to 6 pm, horseshoe tournaments from 10:30 am to 1:30 pm, bingo from noon to 2 pm, pony rides from 1 to 5 pm, and The Bubble Bus from 1 to 5 pm. Also for kids, Harvestfest will feature a Home Run Derby, starting at 11 am, and an NFL Punt, Pass & Kick competition from 1 to 5 pm. The Home Run Derby is open to boys and girls ages 7 to 12, while NFL Punt, Pass & Kick is open to children ages 7 to 17. The city has so far organized two seasons of NFL Flagball and it is hoped that the NFL Punt, Pass & Kick event at Harvestfest will interest children in the 7- to 15-year-old range to sign up
