Humans of St. Louis is a nonprofit that collects the stories of everyday people across the area and shares them with the world By Charlotte Beard What really makes any city what it is? Is it the buildings that people see around town or the food for which it has become known? Some people may believe that a city is representative of what is stated in the media. Five years ago, two women made it part of their mission to show that the genuine experiences of everyday people in St. Louis make St. Louis what it is. Caroline Fish and Lindy Drew, co-
founders, began Humans of St. Louis (HOSTL) when they were both in school studying social work and public health at The Brown School – Washington University in St. Louis. The concept, modeled after Brandon Stanton’s Humans of New York, began in St. Louis due to Fish’s experience with open one-on-one conversations when she lived in New York. While in school at Washington University, Fish
continued her love of capturing the stories of others and decided that she needed a photographer. A friend connected her to Drew, who was photographer. Drew stated, “She told me about the project in New York. I’d never heard of it. She told me to ‘check it out online and if you like it let’s go out on the street and See ‘HUMANS’ page 2
