Castlepoint Park gets upgrades thanks to an anonymous $10,000 donation

By Charlotte Beard The St. Louis County Parks Foundation, under President Mark Ohlendorf, has added to the improvement of Castlepoint Park located at 2465 Baroness Drive in St. Louis. With the help of an anonymous $10,000 donation and in collaboration with the St. Louis County Parks Department, as of early June 2018, the neighborhood park now enjoys a new splash pad. Tom Ott, Assistant Director for the department shared that the area was previously all asphalt with a concrete circle.

Susan Poling, Planning Manager for the department stated, “This was refurbished with funds from an anonymous donor.” He is very supportive of children’s activities.”

The splash pad is open daily from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. under seasonal operations from Memorial Day weekend to Labor

Day weekend. It operates on a timer that is activated by stepping on the activation pad.

The upgrade consisted of reconstructing the former area due to a previous drainage issue.

“We had our own carpentry firm that came in and did all the concrete flat work and our plumber did the installation of the new apparatus, stated Ott. “The donor bought the fountain, all the apparatus, and he will pay for all the plumbing.”

Ott shared that the project began this past spring 2018.

“The old spray fountain was just a sand pipe that was about six feet tall. It got vandalized. So, we cut it off at the ground See ‘PARKS’ page 2

Ott explained that the old sand pipe sprayed an umbrella of water in the air but that the new splash pad can allow 10 – 15 kids to get wet at one time.

“These [splash pads] are popular,” stated Ott. “We have about 10 of these throughout our park system.

We have one over at Creve Coeur Park, Tilles, and there are some other ones. They’re a little bit larger as well. This is a nice size for a neighborhood park.”

Ott shared that Castlepoint Park is about five acres.

Sources state that the Castlepoint Park will also serve as the location for the Community Affair and

Sports event on Saturday, July 28 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. The event will provide job resources and fun involvement in games such as tug-of-war, flag football, dodge ball, and a threeon-three basketball tournament.

The event is being hosted in collaboration with the Castlepoint Neighborhood Association, Community Action Agency - Teen Advocacy, St. Louis County Parks, the Metro Fire Department - St. Louis County First Precinct, and Keeping It Real Youth Outreach.

CareSTL Health to host health and Hat party held for the second Old Town wellness summer fair under new name Partners Wednesday Night Out CareSTL Health formerly Myrtle Hilliard Davis Comprehensive Health Centers, Inc. (MHDCHC) will host its annual Health and Wellness Summer Fun Fair, Saturday, July 28 from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. at 5471 Dr. Martin Luther King Drive. It is the first back to school fair under the new name, said Chief Executive Officer Angela Clabon.

Clabon explained, “We changed the name of the fair. But we will still provide the usual…health screenings, physicals, immunizations and an “Ask the Doctor” area for adults and seniors. Plus, families will enjoy visiting the game truck, ice cream truck, dunking booth, bouncy house, petting zoo and music provided by a DJ. This event is always a lot of fun for the entire family.”

On March 23, the health center’s name officially changed from Myrtle Hilliard Davis Comprehensive Health Centers, Inc. to CareSTL Health.

Clabon said, “We are still a federally qualified health center that provides high quality medical, specialty and dental services to underserved, underinsured and uninsured populations.”

The Annual Health and Wellness Summer Fun Fair is expected to attract 500-1200 people.

The goal is to provide a new component every year. This year, the new addition is for seniors with an “Ask the Doctor” component.

Seniors will have an opportunity to interact with their provider by asking questions in a private setting.

Attendees will enjoy plenty of refreshments and the kiddies get free book bags and school supplies. One big hit of the fair is the Clothing Closest. Fairgoers took advantage of the gently used and/ or new clothing that is neatly displayed for their shopping pleasure.

Everything is free.

Another successful Wednesday Night Out was sponsored by Old Town Partners and the city of Florissant on June 27. The event was hosted

by Kortes Custom Framing & Antiques in the 500 block of N. Jefferson. It was a “hat party” theme which featured live music by The Doo

Wop Band and many participants sporting their most bodacious hat. Helfer’s Pastries & Deli Café served food and the beverages were served by Henke’s Tavern & Grill.

The next OTP Wednesday Night Out is “Movie Night” at the Shrine featuring “Moana” July 25.

Longtime volunteer appointed to Special School District Board of Education Curtis Faulkner, a longtime volunteer of the Hazelwood School District, was recently appointed to the Special School District Board of Education.

Faulkner has served on many different committees including, budgeting, redistricting, public relations and strategic planning. He has been an active volunteer for 19 years.

In 1984, he became a social entrepreneur as the founding Executive Director and CEO of the Juneteenth Heritage & Jazz Festival Inc., a federally registered 501-c-3 heritage and cultural preservation and event productions organization.

Faulkner currently serves as the national chairman of tourism for the National Juneteenth Observance Foundation. He received a “Lifetime Achievement” award in 2006 by the foundation and the Congressional Black Caucus for his work in promoting the awareness and values of Juneteenth nationwide.

In 2016, he started the Dred Scott Advocates of Justice, and Equity a Missouri registered Political Action Committee (PAC) and currently serves as chief advocate for establishing a community revitalization plan for North County.

“Mr. Curtis Faulkner has been instrumental in helping the District build coalitions and capacity within the Community,” said Dr. Nettie Collins-Hart, superintendent of schools. “He will be an even greater asset to the Special School District Board of Education and to our community.”

Hazelwood City Council approves 2018/19 budget giving all employees salary increases

At a special city council meeting held recently at Hazelwood City Hall, council members voted to approve the city’s 2018/19 fiscal year budget.

The approved budget gives a 1.75 percent Cost of Living Adjustment (COLA) increase to all city employees and another 1.75 percent salary increase to all city police and fire employees.

The 3.5 percent increase for police and fire personnel puts the salaries of employees more in line with the comparative salaries of employees in other municipalities.

“After doing a preliminary market analysis, we discovered that the salary levels for some of our employees, particularly in the police and fire departments, were lower or out of market when put side-by-side with a list of comparators. In an effort to retain the best and brightest employees on our payroll, city council members agreed to give everyone at least a 1.75 percent COLA increase to incentivize them to stay and doubled the salary increase to 3.5 percent for everyone in our police and fire departments,” Hazelwood Mayor Matthew Robinson said.

The city budgeted to receive $975,000 after the Prop P referendum passed in April 2017, and $1.2 million in the 2018/19 fiscal year budget.

The passage of Prop P enabled these benefits, programs, equipment and staff to be approved for the 2017/18 HPD budget: hiring of four

new police officers; no civilian positions were lost; college reimbursement was restored; and funding was increased for programs such as D.A.R.E., Neighborhood Action Team and other Community Policing events. Additional improvements included five new police vehicles, a police motorcycle, new computers for several vehicles, replacement of tasers and mobile video recorders, and upgrades to the police station.

With the $1.2 million for the 2018/19 budget, HPD intends to retain 67 commissioned officers with no loss to civilian resources. The department also plans to purchase five new police vehicles, a second new motorcycle and the replacement and installation of 12 new upgraded computer systems in select vehicles. In addition, the extra 1.75 percent pay increase for all police officers will be covered by this funding.

On Dec. 20, 2017, the city council voted to terminate its contract with the RFPD. Beginning Jan. 1, 2019, the city of Hazelwood will be providing fire and EMS services to residents living in the area once served by RFPD. Since Hazelwood only made a partial payment to Robertson in January 2018 because it intends to sever ties with RFPD, the city currently has additional funds to accommodate the extra 1.75 percent pay increase for all police and fire personnel.

You may have noticed stories about hepatitis C in the news lately, as well as quite a few commercials about the disease geared toward “baby boomers.”

Hepatitis C is an infection of the liver caused by the hepatitis C virus. This condition poses a risk for cirrhosis and liver cancer.

“It is suspected that there are more than 4.5 million people in the United States that are infected with hepatitis C. Hepatitis C frequently is a “silent” disease that people can live with for years without noticing symptoms,” said Patrick McDonough, MD, medical director of the Hepatitis C Clinic at SSM Health DePaul Hospital.

According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), people born between 1945 and 1965 are five times more likely to test positive for hepatitis C than other adults. That’s why the CDC recommends one-time testing for the Hepatitis C virus for adults born between 1945 and 1965.

Why are “baby boomers” at high risk of having hepatitis C? Prior to 1992, the blood supply was not tested for Hepatitis C. You can catch hepatitis C if the blood of someone who has hepatitis C enters your body. This is why people who received blood transfusions before that date are at risk for having the virus. In addition, people may have been infected by certain medical

procedures before enhanced infection control techniques were recognized and universally adopted.

Operation Food Search accepting fall applications for afterschool meal program Operation Food Search (OFS), a nonprofit hunger relief organization, is now accepting applications for its afterschool meal program through the Child and Adult Care Food Program. Qualifying organizations can work with OFS, which will provide nutritious super snacks to fuel the minds and bodies of children at the end of each school day.

These healthy grab and go light meals include a fruit, vegetable, protein, dairy and whole grain to ensure children have the opportunity to receive a well-balanced meal. Hazelwood teacher selected for Missouri Regional Teacher of the Year award

Hazelwood School District’s Teacher of the Year Scott Borcherding was recently selected as one of 10 awardees for the Missouri Regional Teacher of the Year for the St. Louis region. He was chosen by his peers as a teacher of excellence and selected by an elite panel of educators for one of the most prestigious honors in the educational profession.

He has now qualified to move forward in the Missouri State Teacher of the Year process.

Free transportation for new Hazelwood East Middle School students The Hazelwood School District Board of Education recently approved plans to provide transportation for students at Hazelwood East Middle School Eighth Grade Center for the 2018-2019 school year.

The Hazelwood East Middle School is designed to offer eighth-grade students an opportunity to pursue a career pathway of interest either under a traditional pathway model or an accelerated model. The program provides opportunities in broadcasting, health sciences, information technology, and coding. Each opportunity is specific to the students’ needs in pursuing a college degree or a career in one of the high demand fields after graduation.

The program will also offer college credit to students through advanced placement, dual

credit, and/or dual enrollment courses. Students on the accelerated pathway may choose to graduate early or pursue an associate’s degree in general studies.

“At Hazelwood East Middle School we are responding to a new type of student and a new type of world,” said Dr. Nettie Collins-Hart, superintendent of schools. We have students who are bright, and they need access to diverse courses making them more college, career, and life ready.”

The Hazelwood School District’s technology department recently rolled out a five year comprehensive technology plan. The district consulted with the Center for Educational Learning and Technology (CELT) in the 20122013 school year. Which laid the foundation for the plan. As a result, many of CELT’s findings were implemented over the last five years.

It is a community development organization that works in defined geographies like the Normandy School District in order to focus its resources where they can have the greatest impact.

osinante was an old 1963 Dodge post office truck which I converted into a fine motorhome with my little brother Guy who kept urging me to finish so we could go camping. Finally, in late August, we went “camping.” I didn’t tell our parents where we were going. For days we chased the sun until we couldn’t go any farther. From San Clemente State Park in California we looked down on the Pacific Ocean. But along the way we fought the winds across Kansas, saw the Grand Canyon, Cave of the Winds, Oak Creek Canyon and Disneyland.

We traveled in luxury…sort of. Our 48-square-feet of floor space included a sofa/gaucho bed, a bathroom with recirculating toilet, a kitchen with refrigerator and sink and a furnace. The rear roll-up door opened up to a fold-down platform shaded by an awning.

Our adventure took a little over two weeks, quite a feat since Rosinante couldn’t go over 50 mph.

Aug. 25: Art exhibit

On Aug. 4, the #ThisIsMyFerguson Art Exhibit opens with a reception at four venues: Ferguson Municipal Public Library, Good Shepherd Arts Center, St. Peter’s United Church of Christ and Urban League’s Ferguson Community Empowerment Center. #ThisIsMyFerguson will run through Aug. 25. Men’s basketball players honored for 3.20 GPA at Lindenwood Four members of the Lindenwood University team were named to the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Honors Court recently. The Lions honored for the program included Chandler Diekvoss, Zac Haese, Landon Mills and Drew Moore.

The NABC Honors Court goes to any collegiate basketball player that is a junior or senior academically, has been at a school for at least one year and had a 3.20 GPA or higher.

Lindenwood was one of just two programs in the Mid-America Inter Collegiate Athletes (MIAA) with multiple players on the list, and the four Lions accounted for nearly 60 percent of the recipients from the conference.

Diekvoss started all 29 games in which he appeared in last season for Lindenwood. He collected 414 points, 189 rebounds, 54 assists and 20 steals. He ranked 12th in the MIAA in rebounding and third in field-goal percentage, both team-leading totals.

Haese competed in 19 games for Lindenwood last season. He posted 40 points, 11 rebounds, three assists and three steals, and shot 35.1 percent from the field.

Mills played in 19 games in 2017-18 and recorded 26 points, 30 rebounds and shot 37.0 percent from the field.

Moore appeared in all 29 games during his first season as a Lion, including six starts. Moore registered 99 points, 92 rebounds, 20 assists, eight steals and four blocks, and shot 38.5 percent from the field.

Last weekend the team impressed their home-

town fans with a series win over the Washington Wild Things. The opening game on Friday saw the visiting team squeeze by the Rascals in a 5-2 decision.

On Saturday, the home team took the contest 8-7 behind timely hitting by catcher Clint Freeman who had three hits as well as right fielder Zach Lavy who also contributed a home run. Designated hitter Paul Kronenfeld helped out with a three-run homer, his 13th round tripper of the year. Jonny Ortiz picked up the victory throwing 4.1 innings allowing only three earned runs.

The rubber game of the series saw the team fight back in dramatic fashion by tying the game by scoring two in the bottom of the ninth compliments of a two-run homer by Clint Freeman.

The Wild Things scored one run in the top of the frame to take a 7-6 lead.

The Rascals came to bat and started with a runner starting the inning at second, as per the International Tiebreaker rule, observed by the Frontier League. Freeman singled in the tying run, and took second on a wild pitch. After Kronenfeld was intentially walked, Mike Jurgella drew a walk to load up the bases. Lavy was at the plate and made it look easy as he stroked a base hit for the walkoff win.

As the weekend ended, the O’Fallon club still had a slim 1.5 game lead over the closest team and 2.5 games lead over two other team.

Bacon S’mores Prep time: 20 minutes | Cook time: 5 minutes | Servings: 8

Ingredients: 4 strips any variety bacon 8 marshmallows 2 chocolate bars (about 3 ounces), broken into eight pieces 8 graham crackers, broken into squares

Directions: Heat oven to 375 F. On lightly sprayed, foil-lined, rimmed baking pan, separate strips of bacon; lay flat in single layer and gently stretch each strip 1-2 inches. Bake 10-12 minutes, or until bacon begins to curl and edges just start to crisp, rotating pan halfway through cooking.

Remove bacon from pans with spatula while warm, draining briefly on absorbent paper; reserve.

Cut bacon slices in half crosswise and tightly wrap around marshmallows, securing with skewer or roasting stick. Roast marshmallows over open fire until toasty brown on edges, being careful not to burn or ignite marshmallows.

Immediately sandwich roasted marshmallows between two graham crackers with piece of chocolate.

More than 30 years ago, Bill Watterson created the unforgettable comic strip “Calvin and Hobbes.”

The protagonists were Calvin, a boy with a vivid imagination, and Hobbes, a stuffed tiger that he treated like a living, breathing creature. Calvin and Hobbes travelled through time, bent the laws of science and always remained the best of buddies.

The reclusive Watterson ended the strip on Dec. 31, 1995, but the characters are still adored and analyzed by fans. A few years back, one fan even posted a drawing of a college-age Calvin rediscovering his stuffed tiger. Like most of us, the artist assumed that Calvin put his toys aside as he grew into a young man.

Watterson’s creation came to mind when I heard about “Christopher Robin,” an upcoming film based on the works of A. A. Milne. The famous author created stories about Winniethe-Pooh, a honey-loving stuffed bear who lives with his friends in the Hundred Acre Wood.

Christopher Robin, a boy modeled after Milne’s son, is their human friend and protector.

“Christopher Robin,” a new film from the Walt Disney Studios, shows the inquisitive and imaginative little boy as an adult. Here, Christopher, played by Ewan McGregor, is an office worker and family man. His job sometimes keeps him from spending time with his

‘Yeggs’ is a comic series about Robert and Bill, two rabbits who have opened their own egg franchise in the Midwest (St. Louis area). We follow their day to day lives, watching as they go about the hectic task of preparing for their one big day every year. Moore On Life Do all men take as long as my husband in the bathroom? This is a question I need answered.

What can he possibly be doing in there other than what he’s supposed to be doing in there, which I’d rather not know about?

But I kinda do want to know about the “other than” the other than he’s doing in there.

Seriously? It’s been 10 minutes!

He brings in all kinds of things that are not bathroom related, such as his IPad. He claims he needs to check on his stocks.

Some people say, “I need to see a man about a horse” which is code for, “I need to go to the bathroom.” My husband tells me he needs to, “talk to his stockbroker”, which is his code for, “I have to go to the bathroom.” But then he actually takes his phone in there with him. This makes me wonder if he really is talking stocks to his broker and what’s more, is this where the term potty mouth originated from?! Hmmm?

It also makes me wonder what would happen if his broker knew he was conversing with a man squatting on the pot?! And…what would happen to the value of the stocks if he really knew?

I think they would go down the drain. (See what I did there? I believe that’s called potty humor).

Now it’s been 15 minutes. I’m about to dial 911, but instead I punch in my husband’s phone number. It rings a few times then he sheepishly answers.

“Hello?”

“What in the name of blocked intestines are you doing in there?

Are you still alive? Do you need some kind of assistance?

I’m about to call search and rescue or send in a laxative. Which one do you need?!”

“Can’t a man have a little privacy without being interrogated?”

“You’ve had 20 minutes now. Either you tell me what’s going on in there or I break the door down.”

“Geez! I’m talking to my stockbroker.”

“Hmph. I’ve heard that one before. How are our stocks doing then? Can we retire in luxury?”

I hear a flush.

He comes out. “The market is down.”

Too much information.
