Caregivers Conference in St. Louis provides support and resources for those who assist with or provide care to an aging or ill person

However, for many it is unheard of to have a conference for those who assist with or provide care to an aging or ill person, whether by profession or simply for a loved one, until last year.

For the second year the Caregivers Conference in St. Louis will take place Aug. 28 at the Paul F. Detrick Building Atrium on the grounds of Christian Hospital located at 11133 Dunn Rd. The conference will be from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and is being presented

The idea for the conference originated from the attendance of CHF board member, Ellen Lutzow, at a Caregivers Conference in St. Genevieve, Missouri. Lisa M. Avenevoli, who is also a CHF board member, was instrumental in helping Lutzow present the idea of the conference to the foundation.

R. Diane Hall, Associate State Director of Community Outreach for AARP shared a

2013 study by AARP’s Public Policy Institute, which shows Missouri to have had 792,000 caregivers providing 737 million care hours.

The study states that at an economic value of $11.52 per hour that is $8.49 billion of care provided by family caregivers.

“AARP serves the 50 plus community; that’s our membership aid,” stated Hall.

“We serve a lot more people, but we work with that group. There are almost 40 million people who provide care to a loved one every year and more than 85 percent of them are See ‘CAREGIVERS’ page 6

Learn cane-pole fishing with MDC at free classes held in August

There’s no better way to get back to the basics of fishing than using an old-fashioned cane pole. No high-tech graphite rods, no fancy spin-casting reels, just the fundamentals of fishing – a snapshot from a simpler era. Cane pole fishing is an easy, affordable, non-mechanical way to experience the sport at its purest. It can also be an effective way to catch fish.

The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) is holding Basic Cane Pole Fishing classes during the month of August at two locations in the St. Louis area, including The August. MDC is expanding sunflower plantings at Columbia Bottom this summer It may seem a little sunnier than usual at Columbia Bottom Conservation Area, even on a cloudy day. Visitors to the area will find some extra splashes of yellow this summer, and for a longer time than usual. That’s because Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) Wildlife staff at the area are trying out a new sunflower planting strategy this year.

The common sunflower (Helianthus annuus) is an extremely large and showy member from the same plant family as daisies.

The impressive height and brilliant yellow rays of a single sunflower are an impressive sight. Uniform rows of hundreds can be positively memorizing.

Spectacular sunflower fields have been a yearly tradition at Columbia Bottom Conservation Area in Spanish Lake. The area is known as an excellent mourning dove hunting destination each September. MDC staff cultivate the sunflower plots as part of their dove management strategy. The large flowers supply seeds that entice the doves, and their lofty stalks create cover for the hunters who pursue them.

“It normally takes about 60 days from planting to flowering,” according to MDC Wildlife Biologist Andy Tappmeyer, who manages Columbia Bottom.

His team typically plants about 14 fields throughout the 4,300-acre area in early May as part of the dove management regimen.

The large plantings reach fruition by the start of July, and for their 10-day blooming period they decorate the area with vibrant brush strokes of gold. The sight has always been a popular draw for sight-seers, nature

buffs, photographers, even couples seeking a picturesque wedding venue.

“This year, we’re giving visitors more chances to enjoy the sunflowers by planting some additional plots,” said Tappmeyer.

He said many of the new plantings are close to the visitor center and easily spotted from the road. His staff has staggered the timing of the plantings to spread their blooming periods out over a longer period.

“Visitors should be able to see sunflowers in bloom somewhere on the area through the middle of August or so this year,” Tappmeyer said.

That means that those fascinated with sunflowers should have even more opportunities to view and photograph them.

And there’s a lot to be fascinated with when it comes to the common sunflower.

Inside the eye-catching rays on top of each stalk are large, dark brown disks where the action really takes place. These disks hold hundreds of small flowers. Every one of these tiny, disk-shaped blossoms is made up of its own petals, and contains both male and female reproductive parts—the stamen and stigma, respectively. It’s here the magic of pollination occurs, allowing the plant to produce a bounty of seeds. In addition to helping perpetuate the sunflowers, these seeds provide excellent nutrition for birds and wildlife, like doves. Even humans find them a tasty treat.

Those golden outer rays are separate flowers, rather than petals as many assume. This portion of the plant is not reproductive,

however. As the early buds develop atop the stalks, they turn to follow the sun’s path through the sky during the day. Once the flowers open, the plants lock their orientation toward the east, and the fields resemble a battalion of yellow soldiers standing at attention.

Common sunflowers are the most important crop plant native to the United States. They’re cultivated worldwide for sunflower oil, which is made from the seeds. At one time, Missouri was a leading producer of the species.

Tappmeyer said the area is open every day from a half hour before sunrise until a half hour past sunset. He also reminded visitors to bring their cameras.

Columbia Bottom Conservation Area is managed to create a mosaic of bottomland habitats that includes shallow wetlands, bottomland hardwoods, prairie, and cropland.

It is located at 801 Strodtman Road in north St. Louis County. The area can be reached by taking the Riverview Drive Exit from I-270 and travelling north approximately three miles.

Florissant to dedicate new Municipal Division Court Building and Police Annex The Florissant City Council, Judge Dan Boyle, Mayor Thomas P. Schneider and Police Chief Tim Lowery have invited the public to the building dedication for the new Florissant Municipal Division Court Building and Police Annex which houses the Judge Timothy W. Kelly Court Room.

The former location of the Dick Weber Bowling facility was renovated to provide a spacious court facility to accommodate all defendants, their families and representation to provide just, fair and expeditious resolution of municipal court cases.

The ceremony will take place on July 30 at 7 p.m. at 4575 Washington Street. The

master of ceremonies will be Missouri State Senator Gina Walsh and the colors will be presented by the Florissant Police Honor Guard.

The ceremony will include remarks from the three elected branches of Florissant government represented by Judge Boyle, Council President Jeff Caputa, and Mayor Schneider Lowery will comment on the mission of the new police annex.

Instead of a ribbon, a large ceremonial cake will be cut to officially open the facility and the cake will be served to those in attendance with ice cream and light refreshments.

Young leaders connect, share advice to empower Normandy youth The Center for Academic & Social Advancement (C.A.S.A.) recently hosted a Civic Engagement with Young Leaders event, a joint project with Beyond Housing.

Held at Normandy High School, the event provided students an opportunity to hear from a panel of up-andcoming civic leaders about the importance of voting and issues impacting their communities.

Florissant Mayor Thomas Schneider joined Dr. Paul Detrick, Jr. and Detrick family and friends at 701 rue St. Francois to unveil the 33rd Walk Through History plaque to honor the late Paul Detrick, Sr. before the start of the second Wednesday Night Out festivities on June 27.

Paul F. Detrick, Sr. was named President of Christian Hospital in 1960. Paul Detrick and his wife Mary raised three children in North County, their home for life. His vision and leadership was instrumental in developing Florissant’s

healthcare services with the opening of Christian Hospital Northwest in 1968 and then a few years later the opening of Christian Hospital Northeast Campus in1973. Paul Detrick worked with Florissant civic leaders and board member of community organizations including Boatmen’s Bank.

He was committed to the prosperity and well-being of the Florissant area residents and businesses. Paul Detrick and his entire family were proud to serve the community. The Christian Hospital NE Auditorium is named for him.

Both Hall and Avenevoli shared that last year’s conference received very positive feedback.

Avenevoli stated, “As a financial advisor who sees this on a regular basis with my clients, I walked away learning a lot and I walked away with a huge sense of accomplishment for something I really didn’t have expectations of because we’d never done anything like it before. People came up to all of us and then wrote in afterwards and thanked us for holding this event and for reaching out and realizing that there are so many caregivers out there. Many of them said they never realized all the free resources that are available.”

Hall stated, “If we can take this one part of the day and connect them with the resources and the services that are available in their area and bolster their spirits a little bit, I think that will be a great impact. The more caregivers who know what’s out there for caregivers will have a ripple effect because people who are caregivers talk to one another and share information. So, if we start that ripple with a conference it’s just going to multiply exponentially. That’s what I’m hoping.”

Avenevoli shared, “Most people in attendance filled out a survey (last year) and let us know what they liked and what they would like to see more of. They also (provided) questions so we looked at their questions and tried to focus the speakers this year to answer any questions that weren’t answered last year.”

Avenevoli shared that there will be 22 resource tables.

“Some of those [tables] include veteran benefits, respite care options, medical equipment, and home modification companies. No one will be allowed to sell at the event, but they [can] hand out their information,” she said. www.LifeCareCenterOfFlorissant.com The conference will also include a speaker from the Alzheimer’s Association, two speakers from Christian Hospital, an elder law attorney, and a representative from the Veterans Association. Attendees can expect to hear topics covering palliative care, occupational therapy, incapacity and strategies for continuum of care, and caregiver selfcare. He shared that he is very passionate about sharing his and his wife’s experience. At the age of 63, 16 years ago, Elaine was beginning to get lost driving to and from places where she had previously driven. their family physician. An Alzheimer’s specialist found that she was experiencing an early onset of the disease.

“After approximately 12 years is when I realized I no longer could do it alone,” stated Schreiber, “and that (for) me to really help Elaine be who she is now, assisted living was one of the most important and best things I could do for her. Although, it was extremely painful for me to think about having my wife go into a nursing home, I realized that was the best thing for her, the best thing for me, and our children and grandchildren, as well.”

Though Schreiber’s time as governor in the 70s yielded him the accomplishment of putting necessary policies into place for nursing homes and finding ways to enable certain seniors to stay in their own homes rather than be placed into nursing homes, that experience didn’t help him in navigating his wife’s disease.

Schreiber shared, “Knowing that maybe I was helpful in having good inspections and good enforcement, that was comforting, but there is no way a person can prepare for Alzheimer’s with a loved one because it is such a horrible experience with a person who once was (but now) is no more. I don’t know if anything can prepare anyone for this other than once you understand that it’s the situation you’re in then the most important thing a person can do is try to learn about the disease.

I contend that if Alzheimer’s is bad then ignorance of the disease is much worse.”

He went on to share the challenge that caretakers have in first caring for themselves.

“You (must) understand as a caretaker that you cannot do it yourself. You need to take care of yourself first and I didn’t understand that. They tell me that 35 percent of the caretakers die before their loved one and an Alzheimer’s patient has a better chance of becoming ill, a better chance of having their savings eaten up, a better chance of job challenges because of the length of time away from work, or just the pressure and the tension that one is experiencing in trying to handle the job and finances at the same time. It’s so important for caregivers to understand that they cannot do it alone.

I tried to do it myself and I couldn’t go out asking for help because I thought I could take care of it myself. I was a governor, I am a man, and we men can go any place without asking directions,” he said.

Schreiber expressed that he wants caregivers to try entering the world of a person who is ill, especially those with Alzheimer’s, and understand that they have become a different person.

“You can eliminate a lot of the anxiety, despair, and frustration. And you can capture moments of joy and steal it from the disease simply by knowing more about it.”

Culinary arts students share healthy cooking habits at after-school program

The roles have reversed for a few Normandy High School students who twice a week, spent their afternoons leading culinary arts classes with their younger counterparts.

The culinary lessons are an extension of Beyond Housing’s Healthy Internship Program (HIP), benefitting children who live in the Normandy footprint as well as surrounding municipalities.

Through HIP, youth learn the importance of maintaining healthy lifestyles through gardening, physical activity, and making healthier choices in the kitchen. The high school students are paid a stipend to share their knowledge with elementary and middle school students in Beyond Housing’s Freedom School Program, which is held in the summer. One of the first student-teachers to volunteer for the program was Latasha Cain.

“It’s teaching me how to explain the process,” said the recent Normandy graduate. She plans to own her own restaurant one day.

With HIP receiving rave reviews from students — and extra grant funds — Ted Simpson broached the idea of extending the summer program.

Simpson is the community health manager at Beyond Housing. He approached Chef Andrea O’Bannon, culinary arts instructor at Normandy High, with the idea to incorporate the cooking classes into the Beyond Afterschool program. This opportunity would give Normandy high schoolers a chance to share what they learn in the culinary arts class with younger students and hopefully spark an interest in culinary arts at a younger age.

The Culinary Arts students worked under the guidance of O’Bannon, who is a credentialed ProStart instructor, at the Pagedale Family Support Center. Classes wrapped up in May. “What you’re seeing at the Pagedale Family Support Center is an extension of a program

that we’ve done with students in the Normandy community for a couple of years now,” Simpson said.

He added that the impact of peer-to-peer mentorship can leave a lasting impression on students.

“They get to see people who look like them, cooking healthier meals and teaching them how to make healthier decisions,” he continued.

Funding for this program was provided by the Missouri Foundation for Health’s Healthy Schools Healthy Communities grant. The foundation is a resource for the region, working with communities and nonprofits to generate and accelerate positive changes in health.

Simpson said the 24:1 area at one point had been tapped as a food desert. HIP is one of several initiatives at Beyond Housing that is a direct result of a rallying cry from families in Normandy footprint to have access to healthier foods.

Beyond Housing has also partnered with Operation Food Search to launch Cooking Matters, a seven-week culinary arts class for Normandy students and their families held two to three times a year. Cooking Matters at the Store is an event held at Save A Lot to teach families how to find and prepare healthier foods within their budget at their local market.

“We usually gain a lot of interest because at the end of each class, they always get to take home a bag of groceries of the things they learn how to cook,” Simpson said.

Plans to continue the culinary arts classes during the school year depends on acquiring additional funding, he said.

“We would like it to continue,” he continued.

Funding for the Healthy Schools Healthy Communities grant will end September 2018.

Lindenwood women golfers excel in the classroom and the course Lindenwood women’s golf posted the best team GPA in Division II, the WGCA announced recently. The Lions posted a team GPA of 3.886 last season.

Last week, seven Lions were named WGCA All-American Scholars.

During the 2017-18 season, Lindenwood posted eight top-five finishes in its 13 events. The Lions played some of their best golf during the postseason, taking second at the MIAA Championships and third at the NCAA Regional Tournament.

Lindenwood has finished in the top-two at three of the last four MIAA Championships.

The Lions set a new program record during the 2017-18 campaign, averaging 313.43 strokes per round over their 30 rounds of competition. Lindenwood had four golfers receive all-MIAA accolades. * Great combination-grades and athleticism After the All-Star Break the Rascals try to keep the momentum The River City Rascals professional baseball team play in the West Division of the Frontier League with their home games at CarShield Field in O’Fallon.

Starting off in Sauget, Illinois they faced the last-place Gateway Grizzlies who took the three game series from the first-place Rascals.

Things don’t get any easier as they will head to Joliet, Illinois to take on the first place Slammers of the Eastern Division.

The much-anticipated home run derby had former St. Louis Cardinals players namely Ray Lankford, Kerry Robinson, Rick Ankiel and Mark Whiten. They competed against eight Frontier league All-Stars, one being Trae Santos from the Gateway Grizzlies. At this point in the season, Santos is tied for fifth place in home runs in the league with 11.

On the hot and humid evening on July 9, Santos out-slugged former Cardinal’ Rick Ankiel in the 2018 Frontier League Home Run Derby final round to be crowned winner. Santos totaled 32 home runs over four rounds at CarShield Field.

As far as the all-star game itself, the Experienced Team beat the Rookie Team by a score of 8-3, and the Normal CornBelter’s Derrick Loveless was named MVP, thanks to a two-homer, five RBI performance from the outfielder.

“I’m just really grateful that River City put this together and did all this hard work. I know it’s not easy to prepare something like this – a lot of time and effort from their staff goes into it. They did a fantastic job,” said Loveless. * Packed house at the stadium Gary Baute, a St. Louis native, may be educated in business but he lives and breathes sports. As a fan or an athlete, Gary is all sports all the time.

Beating the high cost of movies

As a film fan, I enjoy heading to the theater, grabbing some popcorn and soda before taking my seat in the theater auditorium with other movie lovers. Even with cable, digital downloads and home theater options, I don’t think anything beats seeing a movie in a theater auditorium.

Call me a traditionalist but it is my favorite option.

Unfortunately, ticket prices tend to be prohibitive these days.

Earlier this year, the National Association of Theater Owners said the average cost of admission was $9.16. The Regal Cinema I attend in Orange County, California, charges $14.70 for a “standard” adult admission. Moviegoers who want to see “AntMan and the Wasp” in a premium format with better seating and sound will pay even more.

So how does one go to the theater and not spend a fortune? Dollar theaters used to be common in St. Louis, but even those have raised their prices and options. AMC Theaters, for instance, rebranded some locations as “AMC Classic” venues with discounted prices on first-run movies and concessions. In the South County area, the Keller 8 shows second-run movies, charging $5 for adults and $4 for children for evening showings.

Over the last year, though, MoviePass upped

the ante with their one-movie-per-day plan.

For $9.95 per month, consumers could go to participating theaters and see what they wanted. Unfortunately, the company’s business model, as the Verge pointed out, is hard to maintain since they lose money on every ticket sold. MoviePass has changed their polices and plans, which are not as financially appealing as they used to be.

The AMC Theater chain also adopted the concept of a monthly subscription plan. Their “Stubs A-List” program allows members to see up to three movies per week for a monthly fee of $19.95. This plan even includes premium formats like IMAX® and Read D® 3D. Anyone

taking full advantage of this program can see a new movie for less than $2. It seems like a good option for people who really enjoy the moviegoing experience.

Those who shop at Costco or Sam’s Club can find discount movie passes for some major theater chains. You typically must buy at least four tickets at a time, but that can represent real savings for a group of friends or a family. I also think the Marcus Wehrenberg chain offers great deals for consumers, especially their five-dollar movies on Tuesday.

Going to the movies doesn’t have to break the bank. With a little preparation and a good internet browser, it can be an affordable entertainment option.

Moore On Life The sun is bearing down mightily; a solar flare has been predicted. The asphalt has heated up so much that black tar bubbles are oozing out of the pavement. The weatherman is frying an egg on the sidewalk just to prove how hot it is. In my neck of the woods these are all good signs. I know what this means; my husband may think circumstances are optimal to turn on the air conditioner.

Suddenly, there it is a wonderful surprise, much like an ice cream truck making a surprise visit to the lost souls boiling in hell. Sweet, cool oxygen gently wafts into the room drying up the sweat drenching my body.

My husband has finally turned on the air conditioner.

All too soon, I make the supreme mistake of opening the door to let the cat in instead of making it stay out until October. My husband detects the slight disturbance in the air quality.

“Hey! Did you open the door?” he hollers.

“You’re letting hot air in. I’m not paying for the world’s electricity bill, ya know.”

“Oh pipe down! I just let the cat in.”

“The cat in? Do you realize that one careless action heated up the house .01 degrees, which equates to .05 cents. Over a period of three months of letting the cat in while the air is on could buy us more than a few rotisserie chickens at Sam’s Club! I’ll remind you that we got the cat for free so essentially that bag of fur is costing

me groceries.

He’ll owe me four chickens by summer’s end!”

Later I arrive home after grocery shopping. I carry in a few sacks and don’t shut the door because I am going right back out after I drop my bags on the counter. Too late! The Human Barometer has felt the house depressurize.

He marches in and spies the opened door.

Sweet mother of insanity, here we go…

“What in the name of cooling off the entire neighborhood is going on?! Why is this door wide open? You’ve just let 20 cubic meters of cooled air out the door and right over to the Pilkinson’s. How am I going to ever be compensated for that complimentary draft of arctic air?”
