2014 Valley of Flowers Celebrates Children’s Literature For 52 years, the Valley of Flowers Festival celebration has been the first festival of spring. It features a variety of events, including a magnificent parade!

This three-day weekend festival has activities for everyone from a flower and plant sale to culturally diverse musical performances. There are baseball games, craft and flea market sales, children’s activities, a classic car show and of course good food. Carnival games and exciting rides are featured at the Duchesne Knights of Columbus Fairgrounds. The official parade is the highlight of the weekend.

The festival culminates on Sunday, May 4, with the crowning of the Valley of Flowers Queen and her Court at the Duchesne Knights of Columbus Pavilion following the parade.

The Festival is organized by the Valley of Flowers Committee: Chairman, Pat Stinnett; Coordinator, Kati Mahoney; Board Members: Jerry Ahlert, Mark Behlmann, Kathy Blasingame, Mary Gettemeier, Bryan Koen, Mike Kubiak, and Pamela Lee. The Committee works in partnership with the City of Florissant.

At the Duchesne Knights of Columbus Grounds: There will be many activities all weekend at the Duchesne Knights of Columbus grounds on Washington Street between St. Ferdinand and Lindbergh Boulevard (North Highway 67) next to St. Ferdinand Shrine. During the entire three-day festival, the grounds are reserved for families. Anyone under 18 years old must be accompanied by an adult. On Friday night only, all rides are only one ticket. Enjoy the rides, games, great food, and famous barbeque. There

are many rides available for younger children, as well as the grand Ferris wheel for everyone. On Friday, Saturday, and Sunday visit the beer and wine garden. The Duchesne Knights will serve their barbecue ribs, pork steaks, brats, hot dogs, and hamburgers Friday-Sunday. Booths, sponsored by local nonprofit organizations, will offer a variety of festival foods and games. The beer garden will be open Friday through Sunday.

On Sunday, watch the parade. Immediately afterwards, the Valley of Flowers Queen and her court will be crowned at the Knights of Columbus pavilion.

Awards will be presented to the winners of the Valley of Flowers parade, and Pretty Baby photo contest. After the crowning of the queen and her court at the large pavilion, the Knights invite everyone to their Charity Raffle with fabulous items. All proceeds from the Raffle go to help those in need in the Florissant area.

The Knights of Columbus grounds are open on Friday from 4-10pm, on Saturday from 11am-10pm, and on Sunday from 11am-8pm. Please do not park on the local shopping center lots, Dierbergs, and Florissant Meadows. There is ample parking in the field on St. Charles Street or at St. Ferdinand.

To maintain a family friendly and neighborhood atmosphere, the festival committee has implemented changes to better manage the crowds and traffic flow in and around the festival grounds. The plan includes temporary traffic regulations to prevent festival traffic from interfering with local businesses including the no parking policy at Florissant Meadows

Shopping Center and Dierbergs, a wellenforced dress code, and increased overall security. Additionally, no one will be allowed to enter the Knights Grounds after 9pm on any evening.

Valley of Flowers Queen and Court Crowning : Fourteen high school juniors from eight area schools are competing for the honor of Valley of Flowers Queen who will reign over the Festival activities for the coming year. (See their photos and information on page 3). In addition to the queen, a first runner-up and three special maids will be selected. Everyone is invited to attend the crowning at the Knights of Columbus Pavilion following the parade at 4pm on Sunday, May 4.

Hazelwood Residents Urged to Take Online Survey Hazelwood City Council members want to hear from their local constituents. A resident survey has been posted on the City’s website at www.hazelwoodmo.org and can be visibly seen when the site comes up on a computer screen or mobile device. Clicking the link with a computer mouse gives residents easy access to it.

Those who have limited access to the Inter-

net or don’t have a computer can fill out a hard copy of the resident survey at one of these locations: Hazelwood City Hall; Civic Center East; Hazelwood Community Center; or the St. Louis County Library’s Prairie Commons Branch in Hazelwood. After completing the questionnaire, residents can fold it and drop it inside a specially marked ballot box.

Bellefontaine Neighbors Electronic Recycling Event The city of Bellefontaine Neighbors will be partnering with WITS Inc., to sponsor a free Electronic Recycling Event from 9am-2pm on Saturday, May 3 on the City Hall parking lot, 9641 Bellefontaine Road.

WITS is dedicated to reuse and recycling.

WITS fixes and refurbishes electronics, computers and surplus equipment then puts it back into the community. This keeps the used equipment out of landfills and provides those in need with technology. Items that cannot be fixed are dismantled and taken to appropriate recycling facilities.

Valley of Flowers Parade, featuring more than 120 units, is a must-see spectacle. All parade units will depart from their designated line up positions at 1:45pm. This year, on May 4, the parade will feature floats, decorated cars and antique cars, Valley of Flowers queen candidates, marching bands and other unique units. The parade will travel west on Parker Road to New Florissant Road, then south to rue St. Francois and will continue west on rue St. Francois, turning south again on St. Ferdinand Street to Washington Street. The parade will conclude at the Knights of Columbus grounds, where the candidates will be on stage for the crowning of the Valley of Flowers Queen and her court.

Volksmarch: The St. Louis Stuttgart Volksmarch Club will sponsor this “People’s Walk” (a noncompetitive, recreational walk meant for family participation) through interesting and scenic areas. It is not a contest of speed or endurance but a leisurely stroll. This Volksmarch is free.

The Volksmarch will be held on Saturday, May 3, with registration from 8am-noon in the pavilion located behind the Girardier House, 601 St. Charles Street (Old Town Partners/Valley of Flowers Office).

During the Festival the Friends of Old St. Ferdinand will host a variety of fund raising activities with proceeds going toward the preservation of this fascinating historic landmark. Valley of Flowers Car Show: The Florissant Old Town Partners Car Show will be on Saturday, May 3, from 8am-3pm along rue St. Francois. There is plenty of parking available on the side streets with a short walk to the fun.

Greater North County Chamber Awards 2014 Scholarships The Greater North County Chamber of Commerce recently honored its scholarship recipients and their guests at the Chamber’s April Membership Luncheon at Catering To You. The scholarships were awarded to high school seniors who reside in the Greater North County Chamber service area, which includes Bellefontaine Neighbors, Black Jack, Ferguson, Florissant, Hazelwood, Jennings, Spanish Lake,

Old Jamestown and surrounding unincorporated St. Louis County. Each student received a $1,000 scholarship.

The 2014 scholarship recipients are Tiara Gibson, Incarnate Word Academy; Kristen Henderson, Hazelwood West; Olivia Rivers, McCluer; Marrio Roberts, Riverview; Michaela Sutherlin, McCluer; and Brenden Stealey, Christian Brothers College High School (CBC).

The scholarship fund was established with donations from chamber members and an annual bowl-a-thon. Since its inception, the chamber has awarded $52,000 in scholarships.

8th Annual Spanish Lake Youth and Family Resource Fair

The Spanish Lake Youth and Family Council, in partnership with the Hazelwood School District, St. Louis County and the Spanish Lake Community Association will sponsor its 8th Annual Youth and Family Resource Fair on Saturday, May 3 from 10am-1pm at Twillman Elementary School, 11831 Bellefontaine Road in Spanish Lake, and will be joined by Majic 100.3FM. This has become a great annual event for families and youth in Spanish Lake and surrounding communities. Families can get information to help them provide a safe and enriching summer for their children and find useful resources to strengthen our community.

Area residents will be able to get information that they can immediately use. A range of agencies, organizations, government and faith-based groups will provide information in areas such as summer activities and educational support services for children; recreation, scholarships and job training opportunities for youth. There also will be basic needs information for families such as food and shelter resources, substance abuse prevention, counseling and child safety. Additionally, there will be fun activities and free books for children.

According to Lottie Wade, Chair of the Council, “There are so many new and great things happening in Spanish Lake that will make a difference in our community. For example, our community has partnered with Christian Hospital and St. Louis County to create a community development corporation that was recently launched to help address housing needs; so now it’s more important than ever to support healthy families to make our community stronger.”

Standing Tall

By Dave Welborn If you watched coverage of the NCAA Tournament, you might be familiar with the story of Lacey Holsworth, 8, and her favorite basketball player and “big brother,” Adreian Payne, 23, a forward for the Michigan State Spartans Basketball team. The two met by chance when the team visited a local children’s hospital in 2012.

Payne was so touched by meeting Lacey that he stayed in contact with her. He often visited Lacey and her family at her home.

Sadly, Lacey, lost her fight with cancer in April, but not before she witnessed her favorite team and player fight hard throughout the tournament. Payne saw to it that Lacey and her family were on the sidelines for many of those games and quickly snatched her up and hugged her after each game. As Lacey’s dad said, Payne’s friendship was the best medicine for his little girl.

Closer to home, we were also touched by a video that went viral on the internet which features SLU Basketball player, Austin McBroom and his friend Blake Carelli, helping out a homeless man named Michael living on the streets of Downtown St. Louis. The two, neither of whom had ever met Michael, documented their efforts throughout the day as they helped the man off the sidewalk where he was sleeping, bought him food and clothes and helped him feel special for the day. In interviews following the event, McBroom said that the two were not interested in using the video as self-promotion but instead, they shot and posted it so that others might be inspired to do the same thing.

These two acts of kindness are indicative of the many acts those of us who run nonprofit organizations see every day— total strangers reaching out to help others by raising funds, serving food, staffing programs or just lending an ear.

In April, nonprofits celebrated Volunteer Month, recognizing the individuals who serve as backbone of each of their organizations -- their volunteers.

Volunteers selflessly give of their time, talents and often treasure, to help advance their missions.

While nonprofit knows the benefits volunteers have for them, studies show that volunteering has great benefits for the individual, as well. A Corporation for National Community Service study establishes a strong relationship between volunteering and health: those who volunteer have lower mortality rates, greater functional ability, and lower rates of depression later in life than those who do not volunteer.

Many people want to volunteer but don’t know where to start. Volunteer Match (www. volunteermatch.com) is an online resource that lists opportunities throughout the metropolitan area. Hundreds of organizations are listed giving those interested a chance to match their talents and skills with an organization in need.

As Martin Luther King, Jr. once said. “Everybody can be great because anybody can serve. You only need a heart full of grace. A soul generated by love.”

Transcendence raises many intriguing questions, but provides few concrete answers. Will Caster’s artificial intelligence does incredible things to benefit mankind, but it’s unclear if a benevolent super-computer can truly be good for the world. It’s too bad that the movie isn’t a proper forum for this debate.

Transcendence, rated PG-13 for sci-fi action and violence, some bloody images, brief strong language, and sensuality, currently is playing in theaters.

Born and raised in South St. Louis, Steve Bryan is now based in Anaheim, California, and has been allowed access to movie and television sets to see actors and directors at work.

Though his writing has taken him far from St. Louis, Steve is, at heart, still the same wide-eyed kid who spent countless hours watching classic movies at neighborhood theaters.

Hensley is a two-time allCHA goalie for Lindenwood and among her 2013 performances was making 90 saves in a triple-overtime conference tournament game against Robert Morris. This past season, Hensley led NCAA goalies with 1,198 saves, the thirdmost in NCAA Division I history for a single season.

Celebrate a Sweet Cinco de Mayo

Cinco de Mayo is, officially, a holiday celebrating Mexico’s victory over France in the 1862 Battle of Puebla. In the U.S., where it is actually celebrated with more gusto than in its native country, the holiday has become a celebration of Mexican heritage and culture.

The holiday also provides a great excuse to make irresistible Mexican-inspired recipes for entertaining and, of course, a big batch of margaritas to wash it all down. Fresh sweet corn is an essential component of many Mexican dishes and a cultural staple.

Luckily, Cinco de Mayo falls right in the middle of Florida’s Sunshine Sweet Corn season, meaning that the sweetest corn, available all year, arrives just in time to be a part of your Cinco de Mayo celebration. Fire Roasted Corn and Chorizo Dip

Serves: 8 to 12

Ingredients: 3 to 4 ears Sunshine Sweet Corn 1 small onion, peeled and sliced into rings 1 small red bell pepper 1 cup cooked chorizo 3 cloves garlic, minced 1(8-ounce) package cream cheese, softened 1/2 pound spicy pepper cheese, like pepper-jack or habanero cheddar 1/4 cup chopped green onions

Charred Corn Tacos with Radish Zucchini Slaw Serves: 4 Ingredients: 4 ears Sunshine Sweet Corn Extra virgin olive oil, as needed Salt and freshly ground pepper, as needed 1/2 cup torn cilantro, parsley and mint leaves 1/2 small red onion, thinly sliced 2 1/2 tablespoons fresh lime juice 1 teaspoon maple syrup 1 cup radishes, cut into matchsticks 1 small zucchini, cut into matchsticks 1 jalapeno, seeded and thinly sliced 1/2 cup (2 1/2 ounces) crumbled Cotija or feta cheese 10 to 12 small (6-inch) soft corn tortillas Directions: Brush corn with olive oil and season with salt and pepper. Over hot grill or open gas stove flame, char ears of corn until well blackened but not completely burnt. Remove from heat; cool. With large knife, shave off kernels into bowl.

Add cilantro, parsley and mint; reserve.

In small bowl, combine onion and lime juice; let stand 10 minutes. Stir in maple syrup, radishes, zucchini, jalapeno and 2 tablespoons of oil. Season with salt and pepper; set aside.

Heat your tortillas one of two ways: Wrap whole stack in foil and place in warm 250°F oven for 15 minutes, or coat cast-iron skillet with thin layer of oil and heat over high heat; warm each tortilla 30 seconds to 1 minute each side, until lightly blistered.

To make tacos, fill each tortilla with 1/4 cup corn.

Top with cheese and radish-zucchini slaw. Serve with lime wedges, if desired.

Directions: Preheat oven to 400°F and preheat grill to high heat. Remove cornhusks and corn silk, and place fresh Florida Sweet Corn, onion slices and red bell pepper on grill. Grill corn and bell pepper for 8 to 10 minutes, turning every 2 minutes until all sides are slightly charred. Grill onion slices for approximately 3 minutes per side. When veggies are cool enough to handle, cut corn off cob. Then chop onions and pepper, removing pepper seeds. In 8-by-8-inch baking dish or one-quart souffle dish, mix all ingredients together until well combined. Bake for 10 to 15 minutes until edges are bubbly. Serve warm with tortilla chips.

Joe Morice Beancounteritis Some folks believe CEO’s with MBA’s from prestigious business schools who enjoy huge salaries, unwarranted bonuses, perks and “golden parachute” retirement packages for increasing profits even if it hurts the future of their corporations suffer beancounteritis.

Products and services seem to come second to profits in many cases unlike the old time Captains of Industry that told their accountants to shut up and count the money.

Airline companies that sacrificed service and customer satisfaction to swallow up other airlines and eliminate competition suffer this disease. My favorite airline was Southwest with staff who enjoyed joking with passengers and made sure everybody was comfortable and happy during the flights. Since I was tall, the attendant

grabbed my arm and put me in a front seat where I had room for my long legs. Announcements by flight attendants were often augmented with wise cracks.

Then beancounteritis set in and they swallowed Airtran.

My last and final commuter flight proved the days of “The High and the Mighty” were over. We were crammed into narrow seats with limited leg room that were nearly as comfortable as seventeenth century stockades. I don’t remember the airline but according to friends that still commute, they’ve gotten worse. I decided I’d rather hitchhike.

I had a dream about an airline corporate board meeting. The top executives discussed a merger while the board members snored in alcoholic haze. It went like this: CEO Paul Profiteerio: Gentleman. Flyby-night Airlines is on the brink of gobbling up…er…I mean forming a merger with Jinky-Jet airline. It’s time to call our stock brokers for a future buy order so we can collect our just rewards afterwards.

CFO Benny Beancounter: That’s wonderful PP but what about the FTC? Surely they weren’t enthusiastic about this.

CEO Profiteerio: No problem, BB. We’ll have to give them free flight service to their off-shore bankers but they really liked that South Sea island retreat I donated to their head troglodyte. After all, it’s only thirty rooms and a golf course and my wife didn‘t like it anyway.

CFO Beancounter: You gave away our retreat because your wife didn’t like it?

CEO Profiteerio: I can put a new one on my expense account but now she wants a sixty room mansion, with two golf courses, five tennis courts and a bigger passenger jet

CFO Beancounter: I assume I’ll have to replenish petty cash but I don’t foresee any problems, PP. I propose we buy your wife…er…the company that new resort, increase your salary by ten million with a five million dollar bonus and an armor-plated limousine in case the laid off employees attack.
