St. Louis County Parks Foundation receives statewide award for contributing to the betterment of parks throughout St. Louis County

By Charlotte Beard Over the past three years one foundation has been at the forefront of securing funding for various park and recreation initiatives and the Missouri Park and Recreation Association (MPRA) has recognized them for their efforts. On Feb. 28, MPRA presented one of six Citation Awards to the St. Louis County Parks Foundation at the association’s annual conference in Branson, Missouri. Tom Ott, Assistant Director and Ginny McCook, Vice President, both representatives of the Foundation, accepted the award in the absence of President Mark Ohlendorf.

“The benefit that comes out of receiving the award is that others are gaining a little bit of awareness of the foundation and what we’re trying to do,” shared Ohlendorf. “We have a lot of good plans for the future.”

Gary Gates, Executive Director for MPRA shared that the association presents six

Citation Awards each year. This year the St. Louis County Parks Foundation was one of two recipients to receive an award going to an organization.

“There are three different types of citations you can have: an individual, an organization or parks and recreation agency,” stated Gates.

The annual Citation Award, which was also received by St. Louis County Department of Parks and Recreation in 1992 for an award made to an agency, has specific criteria for how it is awarded. Gates shared that eligible candidates consists of any not-for-profit or business organization that has made an

outstanding contribution to recreation and/ or parks as follows: preparing and sponsoring recreation and/or parks legislation, promoting recreation and/or parks on all levels, providing a grant of cash, land, bequest, or such contributions of considerable magnitude in the furtherance of parks and recreation in the state of Missouri. Awardees are nominated by a MPRA member. The awards committee that reviews the applications is made up of a chairperson and four regional directors which are representative of Missouri divided into four regions.

‘PARKS’ from cover Since 2015 when the St. Louis County Parks Foundation began, it has raised funds to donate a new fountain in Tilles Park, Faust Park, and Spanish Lake Park as well as playground equipment at Tilles, Faust, Bee Tree and Suson Parks. In addition, they raised funds for the placement of a new gym divider curtain at the North County Recreation Complex and three shade structures at the Aquatic Center, the Pavilion at Lemay, and in Jefferson Barracks Park. Most recently they orchestrated the placement of the splash pad at Castle Point Park along with the completion of last summer’s opening of Spanish Lake Park’s Family Fitness Trail funded in part by a $50,000 grant from the Gateway Foundation.

“We are committed to making new recreational opportunities available for the entire St. Louis County population,” said Ohlendorf. “Being recognized statewide for our work is extremely gratifying for our volunteers and for our funding partners.”

Ohlendorf shared that they already have another project in the works. The foundation has plans to place a gaga ball pit in one of the North County parks.

“It’s a new way to play kickball, Ohlendorf stated. “We built one last year in Ohlendorf West Park and it’s really popular. There are kids out there every day using it. So, the parks department came to us and asked if we would build one up in North County in one of the parks.”

The park has not yet been determined.

Ohlendorf shared that a gaga pit costs approximately $8,000. The foundation is currently in the fundraising stage to place the pit once the location has been determined. Ohlendorf hopes the pit is in place by the start of this summer.

Sources state that the foundation is also working on a strategic plan that will help provide direction in conjunction with the completed Master Plan for the St. Louis County Parks Department.

COMMUNITY VOICES Lent season and you

By Dr. Larry A. Brown Some folk say that they don’t do anything especially different during Lent. Some people say that they ignore Lent. These people may make these utterances, but the reality of the matter is that many things happen during Lent that affect them and everyone around them.

Then there are those who make it a point to celebrate Lent, the forty days that are included, and the season in which Lent occurs.

Some start by allowing their foreheads to be adorned with ashes; some begin Lent by committing to giving up certain food or beverages and generally use the next forty days as a period of time to lose weight and/ or have a body cleansing experience.

Let’s be perfectly clear about things, Lent brings about a change in the earth around us and in the minds and physiques of many of its people. As the sayings go. “You can’t top this “and “If you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em.”

So wake up and smell the coffee because you are a part of a dynamism that deserves your attention.

Just as the weather changes and becomes more pleasant, and just as we see the flowers, trees and plants blooming to make a more beautiful and different environment, so can we become better individually as we continue to face life and its various challenges which are bound to come. (As the old folks say, “Just keep on living.”)

It has been stated that Lent is a season

for repentance, sacrifice and preparation.

Since these are all admirable activities, we should all examine them and determine how we are going to ingratiate them into our own persona, at least during this period of time.

Repentance allows us to self- reflect and admit our guilt to ourselves, be sorry for the wrongs that we have committed, even if we can’t bring ourselves to admit our wrongs to our victims, we can purge ourselves of the acknowledged guilt that we have been carrying around. Repentance allows us to begin again, theoretically, to do the right thing and to do so with a “clean slate.” Of course, true repentance includes addressing the victim and telling them sincerely that you are sorry!

Sacrifice requires us to endure the challenges of doing without that which have decided to give up. It’s a strength builder and provides an opportunity for increasing our self-reassurance and ability to survive.

Some refer to this as fasting.

Preparation includes establishing new goals, determining what is necessary to ultimately achieve those goals, and obtaining those things in order to be successful, whether they are spiritual, physical or emotional. Sometimes we conclude that the best thing we can do is to become an open vessel and available to be used to accomplish positive things.

If you are looking for the right thing to do during this season, and if you are look-

ing for something really meaningful to accomplish, I encourage and invite you to consider helping us to drastically reduce the unnecessary killings in our community. These merciless murders are robbing us of our present and our future.

Three compete for two open seats in the FFSD Board of Education election Three candidates will compete for two open seats in the April 2 Ferguson-Florissant School District Board of Education election. Starting this year, board members will be elected using cumulative voting. In cumulative voting, voters can cast as many votes as there are seats.

With two open seats in the election, each voter has two votes to cast. Voters can cast both of their votes for one candidate or one vote each to two candidates. The candidates are listed in the order of which they filed and will appear on the ballot.

Leslie Suzanne Hogshead, 68, has lived in the Ferguson-Florissant School District for 42 years and has served on the district’s board of education since 1992. She and her husband Ken have one adult child who is a graduate of McCluer High School. Hogshead has served on various comLeslie Suzanne Hogshead mittees within the district, including the Walnut Grove PTA, McCluer High PTSA, Ferguson Middle School PTSO, and she is the founder of Project Graduation. She is also a member of Harvester Christian Church. She currently serves as the assistant secretary on the board of education. Hogshead is employed as a nursing home administrator with Health Systems, Inc. She studied psychology and business at Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville.

Constance “Connie” Harge, 64, has lived in the

Ferguson-Florissant School District for 40 years and was initially elected to the board of education in 2016. She is the board’s current secretary.

Harge has received advanced and master’s certification from the Missouri School Board Association. She and her husband Bill have two adult children who are McCluer North Constance “Connie” Harge graduates. Harge also has two grandchildren, of whom are also graduates of McCluer North. She has been a member of the Halls Ferry Elementary School PTO. Harge is an ordained minister and a member of Hope Church. She is also a member of the Eastern Star, Ferguson Lions Club, Florissant Township Democratic Club, Florissant Youth Advisory Board and director of the Ferguson Youth Initiative. She has been awarded the Youth Mentor and Outstanding Employee awards by BJC and Washington University. Harge studied business at St. Louis Community College-Florissant Valley and Washington University. She is employed by Washington University as a Pain Management Pre-Cert.

Dr. Sheila Powell-Walker, 48, has been a resident of the Ferguson-Florissant School District for over two years. She has two children who attended Lee-Hamilton Elementary and McCluer High School, and she was a member of the Lee-Hamilton PTO. She is a member of Third Presbyterian Church, the St. Louis County

Juvenile Justice Association and Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Powell-Walker is currently employed by the School District of Clayton as a district social worker. Black History Month celebration takes place at Hazelwood Central High School Hazelwood Central High School held a Black History Month Celebration on Feb. 21.Guest speakers included St. Louis County Prosecutor Wesley Bell, St. Louis Surge Team Owner Khalia Collier and KSDK Meteorologist Anthony Slaughter. All three shared messages of inspiration with Central High School students and answered student questions about their careers. The city of Florissant along with Midwest Recycling Center to host electronics recycling event The city of Florissant along with Midwest Recycling Center (MRC) will be hosting an electronics recycling collection event on April 6 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.(or until trucks reach their capacity) in St. Ferdinand Park at the rear parking lot, rain or shine. Signs will be posted at park entrances to direct the people on where to go. The event is open to the public.

Acceptable items: working or not, basically anything that has a cord or battery; computers and all of their accessories, networking and telecommunications equipment, phones (home and cell), clocks, TVs, VCRs, DVD players, stereos, A/V equipment including cable and satellite boxes, home electronics, rechargeable batteries, fax machines, adapters/chargers, household appliances and lawn and garden equipment (lawn and garden equipment MUST have oil and gas removed).

St. Louis region Money Smart Kid Essay Contest deadline approaching

The Greater St. Louis Financial Education Collaborative and Money Smart Committee, in partnership with United Way of Greater St. Louis, is hosting a Money Smart Kid Essay Contest for sixth through eighth grade students in the St. Louis area. Three winners will be selected to receive scholarships, including a grand prize of $2,000; the second-place winner will receive $1,000 and a third-place finalist will receive $500.

Students must demonstrate their knowledge of good money management skills by submitting an essay in 500 words or less that explains income volatility, describing why a family may experience income volatility and how they can prepare for it.

SSM Health’s new North County pediatric outpatient center ready to welcome patients SSM Health’s new pediatric outpatient center in Ferguson, MO, is opening in April. The center will be the first and only pediatric specialty services center in the North County area, making health care more accessible and convenient for local children and families.

Some things in life take place that make you scratch your head and ask, “How in the heck did that happen?”

Case and point: A woman recently left her child at the airport terminal. She had already made herself comfortable and took her seat onboard. Only after the plane had taken off and began cruising at an altitude of 30,000 miles and the stewards were well into snack service mode, did she discover her oversight. She then promptly threw a conniption fit and the plane was forced to make an abrupt U-turn and head back to pick up the kid.

Really? Who believes she “forgot” her child. Did she not ask herself at some point, “Hey, where is that little annoying human that has been whining constantly for a juice box and asking non-stop questions? Where is that kid that thought it was so funny when we last used the airplane potty to flush Mommy’s wallet down the super-sonic toilet?”

My thinking is the kid was throwing a colossal tantrum back in the waiting area. He probably discovered the last fruit snack in his bag contained a green gummy instead of all red ones. Then he got so revved up that he threw up on the man seated next to them. While everyone was preoccupied with cleaning up fruit snack spew, the mother stealthily grabbed her luggage and slipped through the gate entry and enjoyed the next hour of peace and quiet until she realized she’d left her

phone in her kid’s backpack. She absolutely had to turn around.

I can relate. I’ve tried on more than one occasion to leave my kids behind. It never worked.

Once when we were at the grocery store mine knocked down a pyramid of pickles display. I sloshed through dill juice and over broken glass and hurriedly raced towards the exit. I almost made it before security stopped me and shouted, “Freeze!” I thought I was going to be tazed, so I put both hands up in the air. That’s when the guard placed a kid on each arm and shoved us all out the door. So close.

So let’s give this lady a break. Raising kids is hard on the emotions. Next time she should opt for the aircraft’s overhead compartment. It’s just the right size to fit a toddler in.

Cindy Moore is the mother of three superlative kids, servant of two self-indulgent felines and wife to one nifty husband. Her ficticious occupation? Archeological Humorist: someone who unearths absurdity and hilarity in strange and unusual places including public restrooms, the lint filter, and church meetings.

Most recently, she excavated a find in her neighbor’s bird feeder.

Goose the cat is Marvel’s latest breakout star

Born and raised in South St. Louis, Steve Bryan is now based in Anaheim, California, and has been allowed access to movie and television sets to see actors and directors at work. Though his writing has taken him far from St. Louis, Steve is, at heart, still the same wide-eyed kid who spent countless hours watching classic movies at neighborhood theaters.

Studios’ standout players. Atwell originated the role of Peggy Carter in “Captain America: The First Avenger.” Carter saw something special in Steven Rogers (Chris Evans), a 4-F reject given a chance to serve his country in World War II. Thanks to the Super Solider Serum, Rogers became the hero known as Captain America.

After some romantic tension, Rogers and Carter finally arranged a date near the end of the movie, but the good Captain apparently sacrificed himself to save countless lives. Though he didn’t die, Rogers was frozen for 70 years before he was revived in the 21st Century. An elderly Peggy was still alive and in a skilled nursing facility, but she later passed away. In dream sequences in “Avengers: Age of Ultron,” Peggy Carter appeared to Captain America, offering him a chance at a life with his lost love.

Released in 2015, “Ant-Man” was another hit for Marvel featuring a lead character that wasn’t as well known. Paul Rudd was perfectly cast as the tiny hero and will appear in the upcoming “Avengers: Endgame.” Michael Pena stole the show, however, as Luis, a fast-talking ex-con who answered most questions with hilarious monologues of Shakespearean proportions. Luis also returned for last year’s “AntMan and the Wasp.”

The MCU is filled with mighty heroes and powerful villains, but these breakout characters are the ones that tend to stick with us.

orget Brie Larson and Samuel L. Jackson, because the biggest star in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) these days is a cute tabby cat called Goose. This feline is part of the “Captain Marvel” storyline and brings out the best in Nick Fury, played by Jackson.

There’s more to her than meets the eye, though, as Fury himself can confirm.

Films released by Marvel Studios sometimes have breakout stars like Goose, no matter if they are animal, vegetable or mineral.

A surprise hit after it arrived in theaters, 2014’s “The Guardians of the Galaxy” featured an intelligent, tree-like creature called Groot.

He would only utter the line “I am Groot” which, to the uninitiated, sounded horribly repetitive. Some of his colleagues, with the exception of Star Lord (Chris Pratt), could interpret the subtle nuances in Groot’s speech.

After he sacrificed himself for his friends, a small part of his damaged body was planted and a baby Groot was the result. The opening credits of “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” showed the tiny creature dancing to “Mr. Blue Sky” by the Electric Light Orchestra as destruction rained down around him. He was still an asset to the team, but a post-credits scene showed an older and taller Groot apparently going through puberty.

Ambush soccer playoff hopes are dim The St. Louis Ambush, your professional soccer team that play home games at the Family Arena, lost 10-7 to the Kansas City Comets Saturday night at the Silverstein Eye Centers Arena in Independence, Missouri.

The loss drops the Ambush to 10-13 on the season, while the Comets improved to 11-10. Both teams came into this match competing for the second playoff berth in the MASL South Central Division. While the Ambush aren’t yet numerically eliminated, the loss all but erased their playoff hopes.

In order to still earn a trip to the postseason, the Ambush would have to defeat the 18-3 Milwaukee Wave next Friday and the Comets would have to lose all three of their remaining games.

Guillaume Teste had two clutch victories by scores of 7-5, 7-5 in his match while Michele Gaspari won his two sets by a 7-5 margin and a 6-1 differential.

Theo Butaeye (6-4, 6-3) and Juan Albin (6-1, 6-1) each picked up a two-set win in their matches as well.

Logan Orr had a marathon of a match but in the end lost in three sets.

Butaeye and Teste teamed up to win their doubles match by a 6-3 final.

And finally, Hector Horcajada and Orr earned a slim 7-6 victory in their doubles competition to help earn the team point. * Picking up their first two wins Gary Baute, a St. Louis native, may be educated in business but he lives and breathes sports. As a fan or an athlete, Gary is all sports all the time.

He hosted a radio sports program on KFNS, emceed the River City Rascals’ inaugural season, among many other activities.
