The City of Florissant and the Greater North County Chamber of Commerce team up for the event of the season.

You, your family, your co-workers and your friends are invited to attend the 2013 Business Showcase and Taste of North County on Saturday, March 23, 10am - 2pm at the James J. Eagan Community Center in Florissant. At the free event, you will learn more about local businesses and organizations and the products and services they offer to the community. Health screenings also will be available.

New this year is the addition of the Taste of North County. An area of the community center will be roped off for this event and local restaurants will serve samples of their best dishes for a nominal fee of $5 for adults, $2 for children under 12.

During the event, the City of Florissant will open its swimming pool to anyone (resident or non-resident) who attends the event for the cost of a resident’s fee, $1.50 for youth and $2.25 for adults.

The city’s game room with its two pool tables, ping pong, shuffleboard, and foosball tables will also be open for participants to use.

The Greater North County Chamber of Commerce and the City of Florissant are co-sponsoring this 25th anniversary of the showcase. This year’s Presenting Sponsors are Christian Hospital, Delmar Gardens North & Garden Villas North and Schnucks Markets.

Florissant Electronics Recycling Drive Mayor Thomas P. Schneider announced today that the City of Florissant will again be hosting a major electronics recycling collection event for City of Florissant residents. Residents will need to provide proof of residency by providing staff a current resident card or a Meridian Waste or utility bill and a driver’s license.

The recycling event will be on April 27 from 9am - 2pm in St. Ferdinand Park at the rear parking lot … rain or shine. Signs will be posted at park entrances to direct residents.

Acceptable items to be collected are computers and all of their accessories, networking and telecommunications equipment, phones (home and cell), clocks, TVs (ONE PER VEHICLE), VCRs, DVD players, stereos, A/V equipment includ-

ing cable and satellite boxes, home electronics, rechargeable batteries, fax machines, adapters/ chargers and household appliances.

Midwest Recycling Center will have equipment and employees on hand to assist in the drop off process. This drive has been highly successful in the past.

The Mayor encourages all of our residents to participate. Recycling conserves our natural resources, saves money, creates jobs, eliminates waste in landfills and reduces harm to the environment.

Raise Money for an Alert Dog

Help United Way Invest in the Community

March 26 is American Diabetes Alert Day and the Breakthrough Pain Relief Clinics will be hosting a Stop Diabetes campaign through the month of April, working with Service Dogs by Warren to help a local recipient raise money for an alert dog.

Hypoglycemic alert dogs are trained to sense when blood sugars are reaching an unsafe level in people with insulin dependent diabetes. Breakthrough Pain Relief Clinics are offering to see every new patient in the month of March and April in exchange for a donation of $15 made payable to Service Dogs by Warren Retriever.

This money will go to help a local recipient get one step closer to their own alert dog.

Drag Racing Illegal street drag racing has become a serious problem in the St. Louis area. State Archery Tournament

Two Assistant Superintendents

The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) and the Conservation Federation of Missouri (CFM) expect a record participation of more than 1,600 student archers (up from 1,300 as previously reported) from 64 schools around the state to compete at the Missouri National Archery in the Schools Program (MoNASP) fourth annual state tournament at the University of Central Missouri Multipurpose Building, 500 S. Washington Ave., in Warrensburg. The state tournament was originally scheduled for only Saturday, March 23, beginning at 8 am. Because of higher-than-expected participation, additional shooting flights have been added on Friday, March 22, at 5 pm, 6 pm and 7 pm. The event is free to watch and open to the public.

Dr. Willicia Hobbs, principal of Hazelwood Northwest Middle School, and Dr. Eric Arbetter, principal of Walker Elementary School, will begin their roles as assistant superintendents, effective July 1.

Arbetter has more than 16 years of experience in education, serving the past nine years as the principal at Walker Elementary.

He previously served as the instructional specialist at Barrington Elementary School. He received his undergraduate degree in English literature and a master’s degree in education from Washington University. He received a doctorate degree in educational administration from University of Missouri-St. Louis.

One of the assistant superintendent positions is open because Dr. Darrell Strong, who has served the last two years as an assistant superintendent for learning, recently expressed his interest in serving as the director of alternative education for HSD. Strong, a single father, said he would like to dedicate more time to his twin teen-aged sons, who attend Hazelwood Central High School. The director of alternative education position does not require as many evening meetings as the assistant superintendent position.

The second assistant superintendent position will be vacated due to the retirement of Dr. Steve Sandbothe, who has been an assistant superintendent for the past five years. Sandbothe began working for HSD as an intern in 1995, and he has been an assistant principal, associate principal and head middle school principal.

In their new roles, Hobbs and Arbetter will provide support to principals and teachers. We will initiate the hiring process for principals at Walker Elementary and Northwest Middle School shortly.

MoNASP is an affiliate of NASP and promotes education, self-esteem and physical activity for students in grades 4-12 through participation in the sport of archery.

More than 58,000 Missouri students from 266 schools participate in MoNASP. Since NASP's beginnings in 2002, more than 10 million students have participated in the program through more than 10,000 schools in 47 states and six countries.

North County Christian School Wins Spelling Bee In January, seven North County Christian School students’ grades 3-8 participated in the annual, district ACSI spelling bee. Approximately 120 Students from Eastern Missouri Christian Schools participated. These students competed against students in their own grades in the first round of the competition. After completing the first round, they then moved on to the final elimination round against the entire first through fourth place winners from each level, grades 5-8.

In the final round of competition, the 16 top spellers were challenged with words that were not used in the previous qualifying rounds. After an hour of grueling spell off competition, the first and second place winners were announced; and both of them were North County Christian School students. 1st place was won by 8th grader Truman Schulz, and 2nd place was won by 5th grade student Erynn Tate. We are very proud of the performance of all of our fine spellers.

Art Contest for Fifth-Graders The Missouri Department of Natural Resources, working with the American Water Works Association, is accepting entries from Missouri fifth-grade students for the annual Drinking Water Week poster contest.

Drinking Water Week, May 5-11, 2013, recognizes the importance of safe, reliable water supplies to Missouri communities. In celebration of Drinking Water Week the Department of Natural Resources and the American Water Works Association are holding a poster contest for students in the fifth grade.

Prizes will be awarded to the top three winners: $300 for first place, and $200 for second place and $100 for third place. Contest entries should be postmarked by March 25, 2013.

The artwork size must be no larger than 11x17 inches. Each entry should have the student’s name, the teacher’s name and the school name, address and telephone number on the back. Students should also be sure to sign the front of the artwork.

Entries will be judged on three criteria: how original the entry is, how well the concept is executed, and how well the poster relates to public water supplies. The poster should convey a message celebrating tap water.

Let the adventures begin. Navigating Early by Clare Vanderpool is a mystifying tale of wonder. It’s a long way from Kansas to Maine, but Maine is where 13-year-old Jack Baker lands during World War II, in a military school where he knows no one. Feeling outcast and cast about, Jack meets Early Auden, “the strangest of boys,” a solitary student with a passion for Pi, obscure facts and an obsession to find his brother, a war hero lost in France.

Jack is haunted by his own losses. His relationship with his father is distant because he’s always been away, serving in the military. When Jack’s mother dies unexpectedly, his dad enrolls him in the Morton Hill Academy for Boys. There Jack fails miserably at everything, including the rowing competition, until Early Auden takes him under his wing.

Early’s behavior and personality puzzle Jack, but the two become friends and, like modern day Huckleberry Finns, embark on a river trip fraught with bears, crazy old ladies, rattlesnakes, pirates and tales of Pi. All the narrative’s threads come together at the end of this novel, a real work of genius, that provides hours of pleasure and “ . . . miracles by the boatload.”

Wholesome Snacks for Busy Families A busy family schedule means there’s less time to gather around the dinner table each night, let alone ensure everyone in the family is getting the nutrients they need to live healthfully. And what convenience foods offer in terms of portability, they often lack in vitamins and nutrients.

With very little preparation, you can ensure that convenient, wholesome, onthe-go snacks are at the ready when it’s time to head to play practice or ballet

Here are a few snack ideas to keep your family happy and healthy: Smoothies: While smoothies may not be the first thing that pops into your mind in terms of portability and convenience, with the right to-go cup, straw and lid, smoothies can be a great way to get some key nutrients en route. Prepackaged smoothies, however, often contain a great deal of sugar. Ensure your family reaps the benefits of a fruit smoothie by whipping up a batch using allnatural ingredients and freezing them for later. Be sure to store blended smoothies in freezer-safe or airtight containers in the freezer, and allow for one to two hours of defrost time before grabbing them and heading for the door.

Whole Food Bars: Just because you’re short on time, doesn’t mean you can’t work wholesome foods in convenient, pocket or purse-sized portions into your diet. But make sure to check the labels when you grab a quick snack. The night before a busy day, simply add 1 teaspoon of salt to a large pot of water, bring to a boil and add the edamame. Cook between 4 to 5 minutes for frozen edamame, 5 to 6 minutes for fresh. Drain, then add your favorite seasoning and store in a zip-top bag or storage container in the refrigerator until you head out the door.

Homemade Trail Mix: For a shelf-stable snack that’s perfect for storing in the car, at the office, or in your purse, consider mixing up your favorite dry food snack items such as popcorn, almonds, peanuts, dried cranberries, raisins, banana chips and more.

Keep snacks readily available in your kitchen, such as in a basket on the counter or portioned out in a shelf within the refrigerator to ensure your family will choose wholesome foods over convenient, less-healthy snacks. With a little planning and preparation, you can save time on busy days, while ensuring everyone gets the nutrients they need.

Featuring more adult themes than its cinematic predecessor, Oz the Great and Powerful is truly the greatest film of 2013 so far. James Franco may be a bit flat in the lead role, but with a solid supporting cast and superb special effects behind him, this film has more than enough charm.

A prequel of sorts, the story focuses on Oscar Diggs, the fast-talking character played by Franco. Ham and Peas with Mint & Tarragon Ingredients: 4 ounces cooked ham, cut into 1/4-inch dice 3 cups peas, fresh or frozen 3 tablespoons unsalted butter (1/2 stick) cut into 4 to 6 pieces 1/4 cup fresh mint, coarsely chopped, plus sprigs for garnish 2 tablespoons fresh tarragon, coarsely chopped, plus sprigs for garnish Salt and pepper, to taste

Makes 4-6 servings

Directions: 1. Bring medium saucepan of wellsalted water to a boil over high heat.

Add peas and cook until tender, 3 to 8 minutes depending on size of peas.

2. Drain peas, reserving 2 tablespoons cooking water. Return peas and cooking water to saucepan. Add ham, butter, mint, and tarragon, stirring until butter melts. Season with salt and pepper.

3. Transfer to bowl, garnish with mint and tarragon sprigs, and serve.

Caramel Frozen Yogurt Pie with Grilled Peaches Ingredients: 6 to 7-pound fully-cooked bone-in ham, trimmed 1 tablespoon ground coriander 1 tablespoon ground paprika 1 teaspoon ground cumin 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves 1/4 cup lemon marmalade (or other citrus marmalade) 2 tablespoons orange juice 2 tablespoons packed brown sugar Directions: 1. Preheat gas or charcoal grill to medium-hot (375°F to 425°F). 2. Prepare grill for indirect cooking: For gas grill, turn off center burner; for charcoal grill, bank coals on either side; place a drip pan under grate between heat sources.

3. Score a diamond pattern into ham, about 1/8-inch deep into any fat. In small bowl, combine coriander, paprika, cumin, cinnamon and cloves. Rub spice mixture over all sides of ham. Place ham, flat side down, in center of grill over drip pan. Cover and cook, adding briquettes as necessary to maintain heat, until internal temperature of ham reaches 140°F, 1 1/2 to 2 hours or 15 to 18 minutes per pound.

Meanwhile, in small bowl, combine marmalade, orange juice and sugar.

Cover and grill 5 minutes, until glaze is lightly caramelized. Remove ham from grill, transfer to cutting board, and let rest 15 to 30 minutes. (Oven-roasting instructions can be found at www.porkbeinspired.com.)

Ingredients: 2 pints premium vanilla frozen yogurt 1 9-inch prepared graham cracker pie crust, or 8 individual graham cracker pie crusts 1 1/4 cups caramel sauce, store-bought 2 tablespoons butter, melted 2 tablespoons dark brown sugar 6 ripe medium sized peaches, halved and pitted Directions: 1. Transfer 1 pint of frozen yogurt from freezer to refrigerator to soften for 30 to 40 minutes.

2. Preheat oven to 375°F. Bake pie crust until lightly browned and crisp, about 10 minutes. Set aside to cool.

3. To assemble pie, spread softened yogurt evenly over pie crust. Place in freezer and chill about 1 hour. When firm, spread about 3/4 cup caramel evenly over frozen yogurt.

4. Return pie to the freezer, and transfer second pint of frozen yogurt to refrigerator.

Allow pint to soften for 30 to 40 minutes.

5. Spread second pint of yogurt evenly over caramel, making decorative swirls, if possible. Freeze until firm.

Remove from freezer 10 minutes before serving.

6. To grill peaches, prepare medium fire in a charcoal grill or preheat gas grill on medium. Melt butter and stir in brown sugar until dissolved.

Toss peaches with butter mixture until well coated.

7. Grill peaches directly over medium fire, cut-side up, until grill marks are visible, about 5 minutes. Turn peaches over and grill until grill marks show and peaches

are tender, about 4 minutes longer. Set aside to cool. When cool, cut peaches into thick wedges.

8. When ready to serve, cut pie into wedges and serve with peaches on the side.

Drizzle a little of remaining caramel sauce over top.

Our Precious Democracy Needs Saving People often decry, “There’s too much government!” It’s usually about some law that affects them one way or another. Perhaps they forget those laws were passed because someone was doing something that hurt others. Air was becoming polluted because industry and other sources were befouling it. When asked to do something about it, those business executives refused.

They claimed it hurt their profits. The government had to make them do it.

Water pollution had the same scenario. The government had to make industry stop polluting our rivers and streams. Even ATV and four-wheel-drive vehicle owners had to be legally forced to stop churning up our precious waterways just as canoeists had to be forced to stop throwing trash in the streams during float trips.

Laws were passed to stop bankers from ripping off their customers and subsequently, they complained of too much regulation. As each law was circumvented by some newfound loophole, new laws were sought to patch the loopholes.

In each instance of government intervention, there were any number of scoundrels with no regard for other human beings and too much regard for power and money.

In spite of the bureaucracy it created, small businesses became larger, larger businesses became huge corporations which became multi-national conglomerates that swallowed up scores of smaller businesses. The outcome was a huge, sprawling octopus with tentacles inside the halls of justice and the offices of lawmakers throughout the country as well as many of those abroad.

In other words, since they couldn’t circumvent the laws to increase profits to the levels of obscene, they literally bought the lawmakers. They couldn’t control the media who decried their greed and double-dealing, so they bought it via corporate takeovers, forced buyouts or whatever means were available. The fourth estate that once exposed their chicanery was in turn, used to print or broadcast misinformation that supported the very forces of evil they once exposed.

Slowly but surely, a great many news sources became controlled by the sprawling corporate octopus it abhorred. Unbiased editors were sent packing.

CEO’s became the puppets of predisposed board members and billionaire investors and huge salaries and bonuses were awarded for profits derived from cheapening products, eliminating competition via various forms of corporate takeovers, circumventing laws that protected consumers and the environment and eventually, laying off workers and sending their jobs to starving countries. It resulted in taking control of underhanded corporate scheming and

maneuvering away from government protections and into the hands of the most unscrupulous executives and billionaires the country has ever produced.

Even here in Missouri, a billionaire sits in on private state legislative committee meetings, a privilege that ordinary citizens would seldom, if ever, be allowed.

The difference between today’s CEO’s and yesterday’s business owners who worked hard and became successful is manifest. The assurance that most billionaires would opt for saving our country from bankruptcy against saving their billions may be our undoing. Some are benevolent, but considering the methods involved in becoming incredibly wealthy, it could also be a façade hiding a monster.

I have met hard-working self-made millionaires who are benevolent, honest and concerned for our country and God bless them. Unfortunately, they may have become a minority.

I agree that we have too much government. It’s a shame we needed it.
