Greater North County Chamber of Commerce and the City of Florissant to host Business Showcase and Taste of North County On Saturday, March 22 from 10am2pm the public is invited to attend a Business Showcase featuring a Taste of North County. This tasty and exciting event will take place at the James J. Eagan Community Center in Florissant.

The event will be co-hosted by the City of Florissant and the Greater North County Chamber of Commerce.

It will be the 26th anniversary of the Chamber’s Business Showcase and the second anniversary of the Taste of North County. Taste of North County was originally introduced at the 25th Greater North County Chamber of Commerce Business Showcase to add some new excitement and interest to the event. With over 900 people at last year’s event, it was deemed successful and it was brought back again this year.

An area of the community center will be roped off for the Taste of North County and will showcase fare from local venues including Catering to You Banquet Center, Cornerstone Bakery, Deaver’s Sports Bar Restaurant, Helfer’s Deli, Papa Murphy’s Pizza, Popportuinties, Ribshack, and TGI Fridays.

This year’s Event Chairman is John Vogt, general manager of Catering to You Banquet Center and Chamber vice chairman. Sixty-plus vendors (not including the restaurant vendors for Taste of North County) will be in attendance to showcase the various products and services that are available to the communities in North County. The Showcase is an opportunity for Chamber members to put themselves in front of potential customers and clients. Special features at the Showcase will include a Kids Korner with activities for children, a visit from Ronald McDonald and health screenings.

Many area businesses are sponsoring the Business Showcase. Presenting sponsors are Christian Hospital and Schnucks Markets, Inc. “Missouri Made” at Lambert-St. Louis International Airport Missouri State Parks is excited to present an exhibition titled “Missouri Made,” at the Lambert-St. Louis International Airport. The exhibition highlights the Missouri State Museum’s varied and unique collection of Missouri materials and demonstrates a wide range of artistic skills and creativity.

Exploring five themes in five cases, the objects highlight Missouri offerings from raw materials to manufactured goods to one-of-a-kind crafts.

Examples of items on display include an 1870’sera hand-carved cane, an early 1900’s stained glass sampler set from St. Louis’ own Condie Neale Glass Company and several pieces of hand-

knit clothing. The exhibition explores ideas of individual creativity and mass production, and showcases examples of unexpected beauty found within Missouri’s natural resources.

“Missouri Made” will be on display through June in The Lambert Gallery, located in Terminal 1 at the passenger pick-up area near the exit for Concourse C. It was selected by the Airport Art Advisory Committee (AAAC) as one of several exhibitions on display in 2014 as part of the Airport’s Art and Culture Program. The exhibition is sponsored in part by the St. Louis Regional Arts Commission and Missouri Arts Council.

Florissant Fish Swim Team This summer, the Florissant Fish will begin their 12th season as a swim team. This is a recreational program that involves competitive meets with other North County municipalities. Swimmers can register in the following age groups: 8 and under, 9-10, 11, 12, 13-14 and 15-18.

Practice and meets will take place at Bangert Pool from 7:4510am Monday-Friday. Fees are $55 for residents and $65 for nonresidents.

Registration begins on March 7 for residents and 2013 team members, and March 14 for nonresidents. A parents meeting will be held on May 21 at the James J. Egan Center.

Ozzie Smith’s Sports Academy At this years Ozzie’s Spring Training Skills Clinic, offered by the City of Florissant Parks and Recreation Department, boys and girls will work on hitting, pitching, fielding and base running in this one day baseball or softball clinic. The spring training camp is a great way your son or daughter prepared for the season.

The clinic will be offered to children ages 7-14 from 3-5:30 pm on April 13 at Koch Park Field #4. The cost for this camp is $33 for residents of Florissant and $37 for nonresidents. Florissant Summer Playground Program

Pitch Hit & Run Competition

The City of Florissant Parks and Recreation Department will host its Summer Playground program for children ages 6-12 June 9-July 18 from 9am-3pm at either the James J. Egan Center or the JFK Community Center in Florissant.

This is an outdoor program that may have 1 hour scheduled inside. On hot days parents are welcome to keep children at home.

Registration is on space available basis and is held at the James J. Eagan Center and the JFK Community Center. Applications are available now online at www.florissantmo.com as well at the Centers. Child must be 6 years old by July 31, 2013 to register.

The registration fee for residents is $80 for the first child, $60 for the second and any additional children. Nonresident fee for the session is $200 per child. Registration for residents begins on April 1, and registration for nonresidents begins June 1.

Kids ages 7-14 are invited to participate in the Pitch, Hit, & Run competition at Koch Field #2 at 6pm on Thursday May 1. Participants compete in 3 stations: pitching, hitting, and running with a chance to advance to sectionals and team championships.

This program is free but requires pre-registration at either the JFK Community Center or James J. Egan Centers beginning March 24.

Community Workshop In March and April, the public will have two opportunities to share its priorities and preferences regarding the redevelopment of West Florissant Avenue in the Cities of Dellwood and Ferguson. Both municipalities, in conjunction with St. Louis County and the East-West Gateway Council of Governments, are hosting an online public survey and an April community workshop to get public input on a range of improvements to the West Florissant Avenue Corridor between the Buzz Westfall Plaza Shopping Center on the south and Interstate 270 on the north.

Florissant Garage Sale Florissant residents can haul down the clutter from their attics and treasures from their garages and organize accumulations from their barns for the annual Florissant Garage Sale.

The Garage Sale will be held at the James J Eagan Ice Rink area from 9am-1pm on April 26. All of the usual garage sale items can be found throughout the sale as well as some unusual items. There is sure to be a treasure with your name on it.

Only Florissant residents receive a space to sell. Each applicant will only receive one space. Pattonville Residents Invited to Participate in Community Swims Pattonville residents are invited to participate in a series of community swims at the Pattonville Aquatic Complex on April 6 and May 3. On each day, a lap swim will be held from 12:30-1pm, followed by an open swim from 1-3pm. The fee is $2 for adults and $1 for students and seniors aged 55 and older. All children under the age of 16 must be accompanied by a parent while swimming (however the parent is not required to swim). The Pattonville Aquatic Complex is located at Pattonville High School. Nine Network Arts Series to Explore Nicole Eisenman Exhibition The Nine Network’s weekly arts series Arts America explores the current Nicole Eisenman exhibition at the Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis (CAM), and features segments about songwriter Richard Sherman and comedian Steve Martin in an episode that airs Saturday, March 29 at 3:30pm on Nine PBS. It will be rebroadcast the next day on Sunday, March 30 at 1pm.

The CAM exhibition Dear Nemesis, Nicole Eisenman 1993-2013 displays more than 120 works charting artist Eisenman’s development over 20 years in painting, printmaking and drawing. Curator Kelly Shindler leads the tour and explains how Eisenman fuses historical influences with contemporary subject matter in bold, colorful pieces.

Leave Storm-Related Tree Work to Professionals "What's this? Another tree/branch/large shrub in my yard that wasn't there before the storm? I better gas up my brother's old chain saw and go cut it up."

Stop! Just don't.

Yet another storm has brought distress into your yard in the form of large branches and even entire trees that have broken and fallen into your world view. Before you dig out your brother's old chain saw, the first question should be, "Am I capable of removing this large tree/ limb myself or should I seek professional help?" Major tree-damage cleanup will undoubtedly require the use of a chain saw and climbing equipment. Unless you are experienced in the use of such equipment and comfortable working off the ground, it would be best to have the work performed by a competent professional.

Wind places loads on trees, including trunks, branches and roots, leading to higher stress. The varying lengths and sizes of tree branches tend to dampen the overall effects of wind; however, as wind speeds increase, the loads placed on stress points within the tree increase exponentially. When the loads exceed trunk, branch or root strength, various types of failures occur.

There could be overhead and/or nearby electrical wires that create potential hazards and limit the options for tree cutting. Torn, hanging limbs overhead could make it extremely dangerous to cut downed limbs underneath them.

Most chain saw work on large limbs or trees requires the experience of a trained operator to prevent injuries.

Wood under tension (one or both ends of the fallen tree or branch pinned under other branches or debris) can have different types of binds at different places. Releasing that tension with chain saw cuts is extremely dangerous and can seriously, or fatally, harm the chain saw operator.

Uprooted root plates or root balls are unpredictable.

Cutting the trunk of a fallen tree from an uprooted plate releases the pressure holding the root plate. The roots are still anchored and may have enough tension that they will pull the stump and root ball back into the hole.

It could suddenly sit back into the root hole, trapping anything nearby underneath it.

Slope and uneven footing surfaces are dangerous while operating a chain saw.

Living with Type 1 diabetes (T1D) for 10 years puts Thomas P. Brobson, JDRF’s national director of research investment opportunities, in the unique position to effectively communicate JDRF’s cutting edge research and development activities.

JDRF Greater Missouri and Southern Illinois Chapter hosted Brobson for a series of talks in early March. “Tom covered the waterfront of JDRF-funded early exploratory research to proof-of-concept and proof of efficacy clinical trials. He answered a host of questions and clearly addressed the challenges JDRF faces in the discovery, development and delivery of drugs and devices to cure, better treat and prevent T1D,” said Emily Rapp, Chapter Board President. “Audience members were particularly moved to hear about his personal thrill – wearing the first generation artificial pancreas as part of a clinical trial. There were plenty of goose bump moments hearing about other innovations farther in the future, as well. We left with many reasons to hope.”

The Florissant Parks and Recreation Department invite children ages 2-5 to join them at the Nature Lodge at Sunset Park to make Easter decorations, dye Easter Eggs and search for the Easter Bunny from 11am-noon on April 16.

Homeowners will have the chance to connect with a Springboard housing counselor in the event that their mortgage servicer is not participating.

Elementary Students Get a Taste of College Life

Students from Duchesne Elementary School visited St. Louis Community College-Florissant Valley on March 6 to tour the campus and explore possible career pathways.

“Our aim is to create an early college experience for the students by exposing them to the various offerings we have at Florissant Valley,” said Carla Jordan, career and technical education transition specialist at STLCC. Approximately 110 students were divided into groups and rotated through hands-on activities on campus.

The students toured KCFV-FM, the student radio station, where they learned about audio production and the difference between analog and digital signals. They had an opportunity to do voicetracking and actually broadcast.

They participated in biotech activities, using micropipettes to transfer colored water to 96 well plates that revealed a hidden message, and extracted DNA from strawberries and made a necklace or bracelet out of their tube of DNA. Students built a balsa wood model aircraft and learned how the position of a plane’s control surface determines height, speed and direction. They also had an opportunity to visit a jet cockpit and learn about how parts of the airplane are built.

During a nanotechnology activity, they looked at the tiny building blocks of nature and the properties that they bring to the world.

In a math and perspective drawing session, they were taught how to see proportions and follow lines, as well as how to represent a three-dimensional scene on a flat, two-dimensional surface.

They learned how objects relate to each other and to a horizon line.

“They left with an example drawing they created themselves from their new knowledge of how to see and reason the space around them,” said Ann Marie Mosher, professor in mathematics.

The students also learned the American Sign Language alphabet, signs for greetings and animals, as well as how to interact with peers who are deaf.

2014 Teacher of the Year Named The Ferguson-Florissant School District has named its 2014 Teacher of the Year and Support Employee of the Year.

Mrs. Christine Ries is the District’s Teacher of the Year.

Mrs. Ries is a fifth-grade teacher at Combs Elementary School and has served the District for 15 years. In 2013, she received the Elementary Science Teacher of Missouri Award.

The District named Mrs. Amanda De Krey its 2014 Support Employee of the Year.

Mrs. De Krey is the office manager at Robinwood Elementary School. Mrs. De Krey has served the District for 13 years; first as a building aide at Halls Ferry Elementary School for 8 1/2 years and at Robinwood for the past five years.

Both award recipients will be honored on March 12 at the Ferguson-Florissant Board of Education’s monthly meeting.

Trinity Catholic High School students competed at two academic events recently. At the Battle of the Burets at Florissant Valley Community College the teams of Alan Scheibel (St. Angela Merici), Mike Lacy (Christ Light of the Nations), Meghan O’Donnell (St. Rose), and Katie Driskill (St. Rose) each finished third out of 10 teams. Each team had to complete a chemistry experiment in a given amount of time and were then judged based on the accuracy of the their results. In addition to Trinity Catholic, Bayless, Clayton, Pattonville, Parkway West, Westminster Christian, Francis Howell North, Villa Duch-

esne, Crossroads and St. Mary’s High Schools were represented.

Worldwide Youth in Science and Engineering state competition at Florissant Valley Community College, three Trinity Catholic students placed in the sectional round of the competition. John Hilmes (St. Ferdinand) finished second in English. Brendan McGrellis (St. Rose) placed second in Engineering Graphics. Justin Krafft (St. Rose) wound up third in Engineering Graphics. Hilmes and McGrellis now advance to the state championship round April 15 at Missouri University of Science & Technology in Rolla.

Dr. Gary Jansen, principal at Hazelwood East Middle School was the recipient of a surprise school assembly Wednesday, March 12 when he learned he had won the Middle School Principal of the Year award by the St. Louis Association for Secondary School Principals (SASSP).

Students, staff and Hazelwood School District administrators greeted Dr. Jansen at the assembly. Dr. Jansen had no idea about the honor.

“I was very surprised when I walked into the gymnasium and all the students and teachers began clapping loudly,” said Dr. Jansen.

“I was still stunned when I went up on stage to accept the honor and thank everyone for the award.”

“Congratulations to Dr. Jansen on this great honor,” said Dr. Grayling Tobias, superintendent of the Hazelwood School District. “His commitment to his students and staff is outstanding, and serving the community and District as a school principal is challenging and rewarding.”

Dr. Jansen will be honored as the 2014 Middle School Principal of the Year at the SASSP awards banquet April 3.

FDA To Revamp Food Labels After 20 Years

Does a bag of snack mix really serve eight as the package suggests? How many grams of added sugars are in that package of fruit snacks? The FDA recently announced an overhaul on food labels.

This update will mark the first in over two decades.

What changes will you see on food packaging? It will include more attention to total calories, added sugars and important nutrients such as sodium and Vitamin D. For example, a package of M&M’s serves two according to its food label (look under Servings Per Container). If new research data shows most people eat the whole package as one serving, the updated food label will reflect this habit. Current food labels list sugar content, but do not show naturally occurring sugars and added sugars. This is important in products such as yogurt that contain both types. Daily values of nutrients like sodium will also be updated, and food companies will be required to report content of other important nutrients like vitamin D. “This is a big win for consumers,” said registered dietitian nutritionist and Academy President Dr. Glenna McCollum. “The changes announced are long overdue. CyberBully Mobile App The CyberBully Hotline’s award-winning anonymous bully reporting service for K-12 schools is going mobile thanks to a new app for school administrators. The app allows school leaders to respond to incidents of bullying and other issues reported by students.

Our reporting program is already helping schools across the country uncover and deal with hidden problems, such as bullying, vandalism, and school violence,” said Paul Langhorst, co-founder of the CyberBully Hotline. “Our app gives school leaders an easier way to respond to incidents that are happening on campus.”

Schools that implement a CyberBully Hotline program can accept anonymous text messages and voice calls from students and parents who want to report problems.

The idea behind the program is that students are reluctant to tell adults about issues like bullying, self-injury, and mental health troubles, and an anonymous means of reporting can help bring their concerns into the light.

Leaders of the CyberBully Hotline say that they created this new mobile app because administrators needed a mobile way to manage bullying reports.

“With the CyberBully Hotline’s new bully reporting app, school leaders have a direct, realtime link to the CyberBully Hotline system, and they’ll be able to work with reports directly from their mobile devices,” Mr. Langhorst said.

“This mobile app will help administrators respond even more quickly when students make a report.”

Mr. Langhorst notes that educators can use the CyberBully Hotline customers to prevent many incidents from happening, rather than simply reacting after an event has occurred.

“A great example is a school district that reduced the number of students disciplined for fighting by over 90 percent in just one year of using the CyberBully Hotline,” said Mr. Langhorst. “They consistently encourage kids to text in tips, and they’ll often receive notifications that say something like, ‘There’s about to be a fight in the gym.’ Quite often, they’re able to intervene before problems get out of hand.”

The CyberBully Hotline program is being used by K-12 schools from coast to coast. In less than two years, it has become a leading anonymous reporting solution for schools and been recognized with multiple national awards.

“We’re confident that the CyberBully Hotline mobile app will help enhance safety and security at the schools that use it,” said Mr. Langhorst.

An iPhone version of the CyberBully Hotline app is now available, and schools who subscribe to CyberBully Hotline service can direct users to download the app from the iTunes store for free. An Android version of the app will be released in the coming weeks.

Gary Baute Player Spotlight for the Rascals Eric Williams starts his fourth consecutive season with the Rascals after leading the Frontier League over the past two seasons with a combined 192 walks.

He was questioned about the very high total and he commented, “I get paid to get on base, and that’s how I get on base.” Frontier League pitchers know all too well Williams’ balanced approach at the plate, and because of that league-wide label, focus excessively on throwing him strikes.

On the defensive side he sets himself apart from the other players as well. Over those three seasons, that’s more than 280 games, Williams has committed only one error.

His motto, “Always be prepared for anything,” he said. “I couldn’t just react to anything on the field. I quickly learned that in order to strive for the perfection I wanted, I had to anticipate everything. Before every pitch, I’m running the scenarios through in my head getting ready for whatever comes my way. First year Kassidy Gengenbacher was named the conference freshman of the Year and was placed on the All-MIAA Second Team.

She led the Lady Lions in scoring (15.4), steals (45), 3-point percentage (.448),

and free throw percentage (.836). Gengenbacher also ranked fifth in scoring, second in free throw percentage, fifth in steals, and first in 3-point percentage in the conference.

The freshman from Quincy, Ill. led the team in scoring 15 times this season and scored in double figures 22 of 26 games she played in.

Lindenwood finished the MIAA regular season with a record of 14-12 overall and 9-10 in conference play. The Lady Lions will be part of the upcoming MIAA Tournament at Hyland Arena. *Great start to college League Honors Soccer Ambush Player The Major Indoor Soccer League honored its top performers of the season in several different categories for the 2013-14 season. The winners were announced at an awards ceremony in Independence, Missouri, site of the upcoming first leg of the 2014 MISL Championship Series featuring the Missouri Comets and the Baltimore Blast.

Rookie of the Year was Odaine Sinclair of the St. Louis Ambush. The Jamaican from Baker University had a strong first season for the expansion St. Louis club as he led all rookies with 37 points. He was also in the top 20 in points in the league. As impressive as his finishing touch was, however, it was Sinclair’s work-rate that saw him constantly harrying opposing defenders that made him a player to watch in each of the Ambush’s contests.

Sinclair’s most memorable performance of the season came when he had a hat trick and set up Cory Adamson’s game-winning goal in overtime as the Ambush defeated Syracuse 14-12 on Dec. 29, 2013.

“When we first saw Sinclair at open tryouts we felt he was a special player.” Coach Daryl Doran said, “We were pleased with his instant impact on our offense as a rookie. He scored some big goals for us this season and I see a bright future for him in this league.”

A mix-up casts three creatures into the Canadian wilderness, an old English bull terrier, perky Labrador retriever and regal Siamese cat. The companions, dedicated to one another, eventually find their way back to their former home, their only map their primal instincts.

Published in 1960, The Incredible Journey, a Tale of Three Animals, by Sheila Burnford remains a beloved classic.

When the pet’s owner, Mr. Longridge, leaves his home for a vacation, he assumes the animals will be cared for by of his housekeeper, who looks in on his property. But there’s a miscommunication; she believes the trio of friends have gone along with him. That isn’t the case, of course.

For 250 miles, the companions travel on through the dense woods. Along the way, they battle wild animals, floodwaters, fatigue and ever-present hunger, using their noses and intuition to guide them.

Their trail of danger is fraught with near disaster, and skillfully rendered in black and white illustrations by Carl Burger. Here’s an old favorite sure to be a new favorite of young readers and their families alike.

Ribs to the Rescue: Delicious and Simple Game-day Winners

You’ve got your favorite team. Your bracket is ready to go. All that’s left to do is choose the perfect menu star while the competition on the court – and on the sidelines – heats up. Serve up something your friends and family will love almost as much as the game itself: pork.

The traditional favorites are great, but to take your game-day gathering a notch above the rest, try a winning recipe like Slow-Cooker Root Beer Ribs. The perfect choice for serving a fired-up crowd, these fall-off-the-bone, St. Louis-style spareribs are known for their delicious, meaty pork flavor. Slow-cooked until tender in a root beer-infused sauce with a chili powder kick, these ribs are easy enough to prepare that you won’t have to miss any of the action.

For sides, try: • A refreshing slaw with a hint of sweetness from apples, oranges or raisins • Oven-roasted sweet potato fries, dipped in extra sauce from the ribs • Extra-creamy macaroni and cheese with bacon If you’re entertaining a large crowd, make one batch with root beer and try another with cola, and let your guests pick their favorite. Garnish with thin slivers of red onion for a trophy-worthy presentation. If you don’t have a slow cooker, roast ribs until tender, about 1 1/2 to 2 hours.

Slow-Cooker Root Beer Ribs Yield: 6 servings Ingredients: 1/4 cup dark brown sugar, packed 2 tablespoons chili powder 1 tablespoon salt 2 teaspoons onion powder 1 teaspoon allspice 2 racks St. Louis-style pork spare ribs, (2 1/3 to 3 pounds each), cut into 3- or 4-rib sections 1 1/2 cups (12 ounce can) root beer, (not diet), divided 2 tablespoons cornstarch, dissolved in 2 tablespoons cold water Directions: Combine sugar, chili powder, salt, onion powder and allspice in medium bowl. Set aside half spice mixture (about 1/3 cup); sprinkle rest over both sides of ribs. Pour 1/2 cup root beer into slow cooker and add ribs. Cover and cook on low 5-6 hours or on high for 3 1/2-4 hours, until ribs are very tender.

With 10 minutes left on ribs, combine remaining root beer and reserved spice mixture in medium saucepan over medium-high heat.

Bring to boil, stirring to dissolve sugar. Add cornstarch mixture and stir until sauce thickens, just a few seconds. Remove from heat; set aside.

Remove ribs to platter and cover. Strain cooking liquid and pour off fat. Add 1/3 cup remaining liquid to sauce; stir until smooth.

Brush ribs with sauce, serve with remaining sauce on side.

“Mr. Peabody & Sherman”

Jay Ward was the delightfully subversive creator of such classic cartoons as Crusader Rabbit, Rocky & Bullwinkle, and Dudley Do-Right. This year, DreamWorks Animation tackled Mr. Peabody & Sherman, Ward’s edgy and offbeat series about a hyper-intelligent dog and his adopted boy. While the animation is quite good, the story lacks Ward’s insight and offbeat humor.

Ty Burrell of Modern Family fame lends his voice to the spectacled, bowtiewearing Mr. Peabody. A canine with a genius level IQ, Mr. Peabody works for the betterment of mankind, but something in his life is missing. I’m Jealous It’s too bad us seniors weren’t raised in today’s childhood electronic heaven. We didn’t have cellphones, computers or any other of the ubiquitous electronic gizmos of our present world.

When I was a kid and wanted to do something besides homework and chores, I tried to find some other kids to play with by going outside and finding them.

My parents believed telephones were for business and emergencies but seldom for just plain old howthe-heck-are-ya jabber sessions. A few housewives dominated the party lines chattering about their gall bladder operations or varicose veins. They were sometimes threatened by irate neighbors who wanted to use the phone. Its use seldom included children’s efforts to get up a ball game or a bicycle ride with friends.

If we were today’s children, we might have our own cell phones to text each other or personal computers or iPads to email messages about boyfriends,

girlfriends, sports statistics or street gang rumbles.

We could even play sports games on computers or the TV screen with our friends in other places with Xbox.

Instead we played baseball in a sandlot, pasture or if we were lucky, the local park.

In today’s modern society, we could have all sorts of playtime and never leave our houses.

I think I’m jealous.

We didn’t have fast foods and pizzas either. We were made to eat balanced meals, as formulated by grocery store coupons and two-for-one sales. Inbetween-meal snacks were illegal in our generation. I suppose it’s why we didn’t know many fat kids. I picked up a Hostess cupcake in a grocery store and went into sensory overload staring and salivating at this wonderfully appetizing, cellophanewrapped, preservative-infused, calorific nightmare. Then I went into a funk because my mother said, “Put it back. I make the cupcakes around here!” She put no whipped cream in the middle but arguing with the chef meant no cupcakes.

I even had to walk all the way to the TV set from my chair to turn it on or change channels. Remote controls were something from a Buck Rogers comic book.

There were only two or three channels in black and white and they were subject to some very stringent morals police actions.

Two, in fact. One by networks and another by parents. Saturday morning cartoons held our attention to some degree but day-

time television on weekdays must have been televised to bore deadbeat husbands enough to make them go find jobs. I think it still does.

Even primetime TV in those days wasn’t a big deal for kids. After a month or two of I Love Lucy, I went and found a book to read or sneaked out and went frog hunting. If Red Skelton wasn’t on, I wasn’t interested although I admit, afternoons with Annette Funicello on the Mickey Mouse Club held my attention quite well.

Today’s teens have programs with teenaged girls and boys who look like movie stars and sometimes dress accordingly. Saturday morning cartoons morphed into talking sponges or gratuitous violence by superheroes or hideous robots. Roadrunner and Bugs Bunny styled cartoon humor went the way of roof antennas.

I still see kids playing ball although with adult supervision. To me, it seems oppressive but at least they’re out in the sunshine seizing the day. They still ride bicycles and hang out. Not all of them stay indoors, eat Twinkies and get fat while surfing the net or shooting people on Xbox. Considering all this, maybe I’m not so jealous after all.
