By Charlotte Beard One building of distinction whose main structure was completed in 1914, has been hosting sacred music from local, national, and international artists since 1993. The Cathedral Basilica of St. Louis located at 4431 Lindell Boulevard in the Central West End is not only a church home to its parishioners, but it is home to the idea that was birthed in 1992 to create the Saint Louis Cathedral Concerts.

“Monsignor James Telthorst was the rector of the cathedral and he really wanted to open the place up to the community,” shares Scott Kennebeck, Executive Director of Saint Louis Cathedral Concerts. “So, when he hired the new music director, John Romeri, they came up with the idea to have some concerts in the cathedral. We’ve grown for the past 27 years since that modest beginning with three concerts.”

To date, St. Louis Cathedral Concerts has entertained more than 225,000 audience members through its performances and educational programs. The concert series has experienced overwhelming tickets sales for performances such as The Ambassadors of Harmony (St. Louis men’s a cappella chorus), The Four Tenors (talent direct from Rome, Italy), The Vienna Boys Holiday Choir Holiday Concert, and St. Louis Symphony Orchestra & Chorus, just to name a few.

Kennebeck shared that most of the artists that come to perform are those of which he is aware, some artists are referrals from the management of artists, or interests come from those who are aware of the St. Louis Cathedral Concerts program. Kennebeck states that the artists who come to perform are known around the world. The ticket costs and/or donations and sponsors cover

the costs of bringing performances to the cathedral. The Missouri Arts Council and the Regional Arts Commission are a couple of those sponsors, along with others.

“We are an independent 501(c)(3) from the cathedral parish itself and the archdiocese,” stated Kennebeck. “We do consider ourselves a community outreach program of the cathedral and the archdiocese. We are completely self-funded. We don’t provide

any funding to the cathedral or the archdiocese, nor do we get funding from them for the program. All the ticket proceeds and our donations from our very generous donors and sponsors allow us to bring these groups from all over the world right here to St. Louis for live performances at Cathedral Basilica.”

‘SOUND’ from cover program began its free admission Joyous Jubilee Concert Series. This year the three-concert series took place in January and February at the Cathedral Basilica of Saint Louis.

“This is the second year we’ve done our Joyous Jubilee series which is a series of free concerts (open to the public) that feature spiritual, gospel, and other sacred music,” stated Kennebeck. “This year we had the North City Deanery Choir, which is made up of singers from Catholic churches and other denominations from north city that came and sang for us. We also had The Sheldon’s City of Music All-Star Chorus, which is made up of select singers from high schools around St. Louis. They came and did a fabulous concert. (Also), New Sunny Mount Baptist Church Chancel Choir and the Gospel Symphonic Choir came to do a concert for us.

We’re going to do that again next year with some different groups. We also, have another series of free concerts that we (host) – our Chamber Music Series. Those are done at various churches around the St. Louis area in September.”

The next ticketed performance in the St. Louis Cathedral Concert series will take place March 29 at 2:30 p.m. at the Cathedral Basilica.

The Organ Plus concert will feature organist Andrew Peters whom Kennebeck shared is the Music Director at Sec-

ond Presbyterian Church in the Central West End. He will be accompanied by violinist, Hannah Frey; flutist, Jennifer Gartley; and harpist, Megan Stout. Tickets are available at the door the afternoon of the concert, daily in the Cathedral gift shop (10 a.m. – 4 p.m.) or for purchase online at cathedralconcerts.org. Kennebeck shared that the Cathedral Concerts program is currently exploring other ways to expand its reach in the community and connect people to the Cathedral Basilica.

“We’re expanding our education and community engagement program – Cathedral Arts Academy,” stated Kennebeck. “The first step in that is developing our own choir, the Cathedral Arts Chorale, with development of that choir and voice lessons at the cathedral. The auditions for the Cathedral Arts Chorale are on Saturday, March 21 and Saturday, March 28. People can go to the website to sign up for an audition time (https:// cathedralconcerts.org/cathedral-arts-chorale). The audition process is easy. We are just wanting to hear people’s voices (while) having them sing ‘Amazing Grace’ in their own style and their own key to see how their voice ranges. There is one classical piece by Thomas Tallis called ‘If You Love Me.’ We’re asking people to prepare, come in and sing their voice part. The music links are on the website [with] practice videos for their voice part that they can click on to go to YouTube. We want to make it as easy as possible for people who are interested in joining this new community choir. Its purpose is to perform major sacred works with orchestra in the Cathedral Basilica. It will be fun and a chance to open up the cathedral for more people in the community to come and sing.”

the new chorale where choir practices will take place.

Kennebeck also shared another plan for the Cathedral Arts Academy is to have mosaic art classes given the collection of mosaics found in the Cathedral Basilica. The classes will explore how stained glass is created and the history behind it and mosaics, along with practical application and art classes.

“We’ve had some conversations with (Emil) Frei & Associates in Kirkwood,” stated Kennebeck, “(Who are) well-known around the world for their stained glass application. Just about any church in St. Louis that you go in will have Frei & Associates stained glass in them.”

Breaking the cycle of domestic violence and abuse: continued Domestic violence and abuse is the willful intimidation, physical assault, sexual assault, and/or other abusive behavior as part of a systematic pattern of power and control perpetrated by one intimate partner against another. It includes, physical violence, sexual violence, threats, and emotional/psychological/financial abuse.

According to The National Domestic Violence Stats, on average, nearly 20 people per minute are physically abused by an intimate partner in this country. This equates to more than 10 million victims per year. Records also show that nationwide, domestic violence crisislines receive St. Louis County Police reported 4,410 domestic violence calls in 2017 and 4,195 calls in 2018. The St. Louis City Metropolitan Police reported 2,412 domestic violence calls in 2017 and 2,275 calls in 2018.

Most people think there is nothing they can do to make a difference, especially if they believe they are getting involved in a family issue. However, there are a few things everyone can do to help.

• Call the police if you see or hear evidence of domestic violence:

We have all seen or heard of cases where the neighbors said they heard a disturbance late at night or early in the morning but did not call the police, only to find out later that it was their neighbor who was a victim of domestic violence and she had lost her life.

• Speak out against domestic violence: For many years society has considered domestic violence a private matter between husband and wife. Domestic violence is real! It is not just a private matter between a husband and wife or a female and a male companion. It is a social problem affecting all of our communities.

If you know someone who is being hurt by their partner, let them know that they deserve to be safe. Find out what resources may be available and share them. A person usually needs support to escape an abusive relationship. And sometimes they don’t know where to begin.

• Encourage your neighborhood watch program to become as concerned with watching out for domestic vio-

lence incidences as they are with burglaries and other crimes: The eyes and ears of the community can sometimes make a difference between life and death for a victim and/ or her children.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR Dear editor: I wanted to reply to Dr. Holekamp’s column regarding the children who are recovering from injuries caused by their parents or caregivers on Feb. 19, “Northwest Views: Renewing hope for sick and injured children.”

I work in one of the largest therapeutic residential treatment facilities in the region serving children, adolescents and families for almost 28 years now. We provide a safe and stable environment for youth to help them manage emotional and behavioral issues that often stem from a history of abuse, neglect, abandonment or other traumas. The children impacted by these experiences are exposed to these serious challenges that can affect healthy growth and development.

I am the receptionist in the treatment center where the children enter for the first time. Seeing the uncertainty on their faces and the wonderment of where they are coming, I try to make it go as smoothly as possible. I receive their admission packet so I have some idea of what they’ve been through. I always give them a great big smile and ask their name. Some will reply and others just don’t feel like speaking or smiling.

There have been many successful endings. Some even come back years later, all grown up to visit.

I was deeply moved by your story and how compassionate people are who give so much of themselves every day for children in so much need. I love my job because I love children!

And after reading your story, it must be a challenge, especially for you and your nurses to work with these children whom you see for their medical help for their injuries, and then we see them for their psychotherapy and counseling to stabilize.

I agree with you wholeheartedly that some of the stories that we hear are heartbreaking is enough to shake your faith in humanity, but if there are enough people out there like us then it’s what motivates me to come to work every day!

Treasurer’s report: four Ferguson Commission calls-to-action implemented St. Louis Treasurer Tishaura O. Jones is reporting on her office’s activities from 2019, including four policies recommended by the Ferguson Commission in their Forward Through Ferguson Report.

“The Ferguson Commission report was not meant to sit on a shelf. My office has been implementing the Forward Through Ferguson calls-to-action because we all benefit from an equitable region which expands opportunity for all,” said Jones.

1. Call to Action: “Raise the Minimum Wage to $15/hr.” Last year the Treasurer’s Office set a $15 minimum wage, helping blaze a trail for other governments and businesses in the region.

2. Call to Action: “Create Universal Child Development Accounts.” This school year, the College Kids program reached 16,000 children’s savings accounts with over $1.1 million in assets, helping students in SLPS and charter schools attain their dreams of college or vocational training.

3. Call to Action: “Raise Awareness of Development Accounts.” The office used radio PSAs, new placement on the SLPS website,

I-270 area police departments stepping up enforcement for hazardous driving Police departments from around the north St. Louis County area that services Interstate 270 are stepping up enforcement. The Bridgeton, Florissant, Hazelwood, St. Louis County Police Departments and the Missouri State Highway Patrol have formed an I-270 Enforcement Group to curtail dangerous, aggressive and hazardous driving on the areas busiest interstate.

The purpose of this enforcement campaign is to reduce the dangerous driving that is occurring everyday on the highway ahead of the Missouri Department of Transportation’s major construction project, slated to begin in spring 2020. This project will affect motorist along the I-270 corridor from near Interstate 70 to Bellefontaine Rd. These police departments will work together during

the coming months to present a high visibility enforcement effort. Officers from the various departments will work as teams to focus on the most serious traffic violators. That focus will be on hazardous moving violations and seatbelt enforcement on I-270. Hazardous moving violations such as speeding, following too close, improper lane use and changes are the most common factors in crashes along this area of Interstate 270. By working together these departments are encouraging safe driving and voluntary compliance of traffic laws through high visibility and enforcement efforts.

A study of accident statistics since 2017 revealed there were over 1,800 traffic crashes on I-270 in the area between Bridgeton, Hazelwood and Florissant. In these crash-

es over 1,200 of them were reported to have hazardous moving violations attributed to the cause of the incident.

There were over 655 of them that involved injuries and 12 fatalities. The enforcement campaign will focus on the times and days where hazardous moving violations are most prevalent and enforcement can be most useful.

The campaign is being partially funded through on-going MoDOT traffic safety grants. The enforcement campaign will continue as the need to conduct operations is necessary and in coordination with scheduled MoDOT construction operations.

Commuters ‘Hopping on Transit’ at select transit centers to receive a bunny candy in celebration of spring Transit is a safe, beneficial transportation option utilized daily by thousands of St. Louis area residents. To demonstrate appreciation to these individuals and reinforce why transit is a sweet ride, representatives of Citizens for Modern Transit, Metro Transit, Metro Transit Public Safety, St. Louis County Police Department, St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department, St. Clair County Sheriff ’s Department, St. Clair County Transit District, AARP St. Louis and University of Missouri–St. Louis will be handing out bunny candy to those “Hopping on Transit” between 6:30 a.m. and 8:00 a.m. on March 20 (the first day of spring) at the Forest Park-DeBaliviere, Shrewsbury-Lansdowne I-44 and Belleville Transit Centers. MetroLink and MetroBus riders boarding at those transit centers will also be given clues to help them find several prize-filled, Golden Eggs hidden at other transit stops as part of a rolling scavenger hunt.

To add to the fun, TapSnap Studio Photo Booths will be at each event site. Transit riders can get a commemorative photo taken to share on social channels explaining why #TransitIsASweetRide.

“Citizens for Modern Transit has been teaming up with Metro Transit and other partnering organization for more than a year now to promote the benefits of taking transit, build relationships between commuters and members of law enforcement patrolling the system, and demonstrate appreciation for riders,” said Kimberly Cella, executive director of Citizens for Modern Transit.

Red Cross responds to increasing number of fatality fires; COMMUNITY offers free smoke VOICES alarms In recent months, the American Red Cross has responded to an increasing number of fatal fires in the Greater St. Louis area and the surrounding counties they cover. Sadly, this often means individuals didn’t receive enough warning to act quickly and get out of their home before being overcome by smoke and fire, either because they didn’t have a smoke alarm, or it wasn’t working properly.

While it is normal to see more fires in cold weather, the number of fatalities is up significantly. We track fire responses by fiscal year starting July 1 and since then, we have already responded to seven fatality fires, five of those just from November through January. In comparison, we responded to two fatality fires during the entire previous fiscal year (July 1, 2018-June 30, 2019).

As part of our annual spring home fire education campaign, Sound the Alarm, the Red Cross will be installing 1,250 free smoke alarms in the Greater St. Louis area in late April into early May. This is done in conjunction with local fire departments who work with us to respond to the needs of the community. This is the fifth year for the campaign and ensures area homes are made safer and lives can be saved because working smoke alarms can cut the risk of fire deaths by approximately 50 percent.

Since the Sound the Alarm campaign launched five years ago, the Red Cross has documented 29 lives saved in the state of Missouri through the installations. In addition to the Sound the Alarm campaign, the Red Cross partners with the St. Louis Fire Department each spring and fall to install smoke alarms during time change weekend, resulting in an additional 2,000 installations a year.

In the Greater St. Louis area and surrounding counties, the Red Cross responds to home fires daily by offering assistance to individuals who may not have a place to go, or a way to purchase food or clothing in the immediate aftermath of a fire. The Red Cross is grateful for the financial support they receive that allows them to continue to support those who need their services. And, they are so appreciative of their volunteers, who make up 90 percent of their workforce, ensuring we are able to deliver these vital services.

Northwest Views: Give blood 2020

As we recover from the winter holidays and start to forget our New Year’s resolutions, many of us will be looking for new things to do as warmer weather slowly approaches from signing up for gym memberships to volunteering in the local community.

Most of us will not be thinking about giving blood.

Blood centers across the country experience a shortage of donors every winter, and as we enter spring start to see those numbers improve, encouraging donors to return.

“Schools and businesses hold fewer blood drives (in the winter) and many of our regular donors are unable to schedule an appointment until after the holidays,” said Pat Dillon, a Recruitment Development Coordinator for the Blood Center and member of the Northwest Chamber of Commerce.

As the blood supplier to SSM Health, Mercy and St. Luke’s hospitals here in St. Louis, people who donate with Mississippi Valley get to make more of a local impact than they realize.

Jamila Boone, one of the blood centers very own had to receive four times the amount of blood in her body to save her life after complications during the birth of her son. Since donors supported the blood supply at the hospital, she was able to receive the gift to live.

“Unknown to the doctors, my amniotic fluid had slowly been entering my blood stream.” Jamila Boone, a Recruitment Development Coordinator for the Blood Center said, “As soon as an incision was made for the C-section, I began to bleed out

rapidly.”

The blood center encourages people to give blood this year to help support local hospitals and community members to help us save lives.

“Before this unexpected medical emergency, I didn’t know anything about blood donation,” Boone said, “blood is the most precious gift that anyone can give to another person, and I am forever grateful for those that gave me the gift of life.”

St. Louis region’s inland port system climbs to number two spot for total tonnage The latest data from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) reveals the St. Louis regional ports moved from the third position into the second position for inland port total tonnage in the 2018 rankings. The port system handled 37.4 million tons of commodities over the course of the year, a 13.2 percent increase over the prior the year.

Just 1.1 million tons separated it from the top position, which the Port of Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky held onto, despite a drop in its total tonnage for the year.

The rise in the rankings adds to the accolades for the St. Louis region, which continues to rank as the most efficient inland port district in the nation in terms of tons moved per river mile. During 2018, the St. Louis region’s barge industry handled more than 534,000 tons per mile along the 70 miles that make up the port system. The system also has the second highest concentration of port facilities per mile of all inland ports, contributing to growing awareness of a 15-mile stretch of the Mississippi River that flows through southwestern Illinois and eastern Missouri at St. Louis known as the Ag Coast of America.

“For you as a region to come up to number two for total tonnage is a real accomplishment, but it’s not surprising as St. Louis has been gaining for a while,” said Ken Eriksen, Senior Vice President with IHS Markit, a world leader in critical information, analytics and solutions for the major industries and markets that drive economies worldwide.

Eriksen notes there are several things contributing to the positive trends for the St. Louis region’s port system, among them the fact that there is only one set of locks between St. Louis and Asia, and that is the Panama Canal. He also highlighted the deeper draughts that allow for barges to be loaded heavy, rail access in the region from both sides of Mississippi River and the presence of

On Feb. 19, McCluer North sent 12 students to compete in the Missouri State High School Activities Association (MSHSAA) Boys and Girls Wrestling State Championship. This is the largest number of student wrestlers who have been sent to compete at the state level in 10 years. The state championship took place from Feb. 19, through Feb. 22, at University of Missouri-Columbia’s Mizzou Arena.

“I’m excited. It’s been a long journey,” said senior, Isaac Roberson. “I’m coming to get a state medal! I’ve been practicing all summer and all throughout the year. All of us are ready!”

On Feb. 15, the wrestlers competed in the Class 3 District Tournament at St. Charles High School in St. Charles, Missouri. Several schools across the Greater St. Louis Metropolitan area participated and McCluer North scored the highest points. This is the second year of girls wrestling at McCluer North.

“Last year, in the girls first year of wrestling, we only brought three of them to state. This year, we’re bringing six,” said assistant coach Dan Cooper. “We have a great shot at getting the medal. We’re extremely excited about the hard work the kids have demonstrated.”

New academic readiness program provides a free, fast jump start to college St. Louis Community College (STLCC) has just announced the launch of the Longbow Academic Readiness Accelerator, a new program that offers adult learners a smart, no-cost way to jump start their journey into college and beyond.

Longbow is uniquely designed to help students quickly improve their college course placements or ACT WorkKeys test scores in four to 16 weeks so they can focus time, tuition and Pell grant dollars on classes that really count toward their career goals.

“We want our students to reach their career goals as quickly and effectively as possible, equipped with a world-class, affordable education,” said Hart Nelson, associate vice chancellor, STLCC Workforce Solutions Group. “This program potentially shaves multiple semesters and significant tuition dollars off a student’s course plan and can even open up accelerated job training opportunities that were previously out of reach.”

The program currently resides at the STLCC–Florissant Valley campus, and offers students individualized instructor attention or the ability to work in small groups in a comfortable lab setting where they can move through the materials at a pace that works best for them.

“Students enter our programs with varying levels of skill and knowledge, and many students need a different kind of option that allows them to move through coursework at a pace they might not find in a traditional classroom,” said Dr. Elizabeth Gassel Perkins, campus president, STLCC–Florissant Valley. “For some students that means moving quickly, while others may need more time in a classroom to prepare for college-level work. Longbow supports both scenarios and helps students understand how the college can support their future goals while they learn for free!”

The Longbow name is a nod to the program’s ability to serve as a launching point for students who aim to reach new heights and travel further in college and career.

A St. Patty’s Day sandwich

In honor of the day when everyone is Irish, welcome family and friends to a traditional St. Patrick’s Day lunch with this Reuben Sandwich recipe.

Fill in the blank squares in the grid, making sure that every row, column and 3-by-3 box includes all the digits 1 through 9.

Reuben Sandwich Servings: 2

Ingredients: 2 tablespoons butter, softened 4 slices rye and pumpernickel swirl bread 4 slices swiss cheese 6 ounces corned beef 2 tablespoons, plus 2 teaspoons, Thousand Island Dressing, divided 4 tablespoons sauerkraut Directions: Heat nonstick skillet over medium heat.

Spread 1 tablespoon butter on one side of two bread slices. Place buttered side down in heated skillet. Add two slices cheese to each bread slice. Spread 2 tablespoons dressing over cheese slices.

Add 3 ounces corned beef to each bread slice.

Spread 2 teaspoons dressing over corned beef. Spread 2 tablespoons sauerkraut

over corned beef.

Spread remaining butter on one side of remaining bread slices. Place buttered side up on top of sauerkraut.

Cook 4-7 minutes each side, flipping once, until golden brown and cheese is melted.

Though his writing has taken him far from St. Louis, Steve is, at heart, still the same wide-eyed kid who spent countless hours watching classic movies at neighborhood theaters.

orty years ago, the 1980’s officially began with new attitudes and fashion trends, especially clothing lines inspired by the TV series “Miami Vice.” For film fans, this decade also featured offbeat, strange and often wonderful films that now serve as a video time capsule for us. The 1987 cult classic “The Monster Squad,” for instance, focuses on a group of young people that battle the likes of Dracula, the Mummy and other monsters. It also contains scenes with outdated devices like payphones.

The 1980’s definitely made stars out of many performers as well. Coming off Broadway success, Matthew Broderick starred in films such as 1983’s “War Games” and the underrated adventure “Ladyhawke” opposite Rutger Hauer and Michelle Pfeiffer. A few years later, the actor took the lead role in “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off,” a classic comedy that became part of pop culture. In 2012, Broderick paid homage to the character in a Superbowl ad that showed him getting his own day off.

Although they didn’t do well at first, some 80’s films became beloved cult classics. Fred Ward, who played astronaut Gus Grissom in 1983’s “The Right Stuff,” took the lead role

t’s been a super kind of year so far. There have been so many things that have that title in them.

We just experienced a Super Moon—a.k.a. the Snow Moon. Word is, a nearby supernova created a supercell, which in turn created a super blizzard that dumped a super amount of snow on the moon. Naturally, under all that excess weight, the moon dropped considerably closer towards the earth. Totally true; it’s all right there in Wikipedia.

Then there’s the Super Bowl: This year my husband’s and my team won, which made it supercool. The halftime event featuring superstars produced a lot of controversy which some say was super gross. I must have missed it. That’s the time I left to make nachos and drinks, supersized, of course.

There’s a super virus out there which is wreaking havoc on the world. This teeny tiny super bug even caused the big giant markets not be so super. What can be done? Do we need a supersized swatter to crush this bad bug? How about a superhuman with superpowers to come down and rescue us? Maybe Superman or Superwoman? But we all know that’s not going to happen.

They’re both too busy making another super blockbuster movie fighting evil monsters and space demons while earning super bucks.

Then there’s that other event that created so much angst and negative energy – Super Tuesday. This was the time when the superrich brought their superegos and pandered for a super amount of votes. It left the country’s underpants in a super knot. So much blather!

Something needs to be done about all the lies

Super duper and super hype. I suggest Superglue; applied generously right around the mouth area.

I have an even better idea. Instead of all of these partisan crybaby wars we should have just left well enough alone. We all know Tuesdays were reserved for one thing and one thing only.

Why ruin a good idea with all this silly madness?

Load up your plates, supersize your drink and enjoy it like it was intended to be enjoyed…
