One of the major prizes auctioned off will be a luxury 4-day/3-night room package to Karisma Hotels’ Eldorado Royale Spa Resort for two adults. This donation is sponsored by Joe Lang Travel at 314.985.5642. Located in Mexico’s Riviera Maya just south of Cancun, Eldorado Royale was ranked last year as one of the “Top 100” hotels in the world by Conde Nast Traveler magazine readers.

Another great prize to bid on will be a St. Louis Cardinals Baseball Outing which includes two free tickets to a home game at Busch Stadium, use of an 8-passenger limo provided by JED Limousine Service, and a gift certificate for dinner at Mike Shannon’s Steaks & Seafood Restaurant. In addition, guests can enter raffle drawings for a Treasure Chest of Happiness, which contains an assortment of liquor valued at $500, and a beautiful emerald pendant being donated by Henefer’s Jewelry in Florissant.

To qualify for the emerald pendant drawing, guests must buy a plastic ring that blinks for $10 a piece. They must also be present at the event in case they are announced as the winner.

event sponsorships, “live” auction bids, and raffle drawings benefit Valley Industries Sheltered Workshop, a 501(c)3 notfor-profit organization which provides dignified, meaningful employment for adults with developmental disabilities.

This organization has been a prominent fixture in North County since 1967 when it first opened a facility in the City of Florissant with 15 employees. Today, the workshop serves almost 200 adults with disabilities in a 60,000 square-foot facility based in the City of Hazelwood.

Event hosts include these elected mayors from several North County communities: Mayor Norman McCourt of Black Jack; Mayor James Knowles, III, of Ferguson; Mayor Tom Schneider of Florissant; and Mayor Matthew Robinson of Hazelwood. They arrive decked out in black tuxedos, top hats, and green ties/cumberbunds/sashes to greet everyone at the front door.

There are very few individual tickets, valued at $100 a piece, left for the event.

6th Annual FestivAle Celebrates Local Breweries Including Ferguson Brewing Co. The 6th Annual FestivAle celebrates the best of the St. Louis region’s breweries on Saturday, March 8 at Neo on Locust, 2801 Locust Street, Midtown St. Louis.

Hazelwood Employees Wear Red to Raise Awareness of Heart Disease Among Women

A good turnout of Hazelwood employees assembled for a photo opportunity on Feb. 7, 2014, to send this message to the community, “Go Red, Hazelwood!” Most of them wore red to show support for the 11th Annual National Wear Red Day, sponsored nationally by Macy’s.

The American Heart Association, (AHA), launched this Go Red for Women movement more than ten years ago for the purpose of encouraging women to take their cardiovascular health more seriously in order to live a stronger, longer life. Unfortunately, heart disease is the #1 killer of women, age 25 and older, and stroke is ranked as the #4 killer. According to AHA statistics, women account for 61 percent of all stroke deaths annually.

For the past decade, women have been fighting heart disease individually and together as part of the Go Red for Women movement. Stemming from that action, National Wear Red Day was born. It’s held on the first Friday in Febru-

ary every year to help raise awareness about the problem of heart disease among women. Looking back over the years, the movement has made strides with these accomplishments: • 21% fewer women dying from heart disease • 23% more women aware that its their #1 health threat • Publishing of gender-specific results, established guidelines for prevention and treatment • Legislation to help end gender disparities But the fight is far from over. There’s still a lot of women unaware of the risks and facts about heart disease and strokes.

Funds raised by the Go Red for Women movement are used to educate women and increase their awareness about these health risks. Also, monies are used to finance critical research needed to find a cure and to provide better medical treatment. Hazelwood’s administrative secretary for the Public Works Department, Kathy Baker, has spearheaded the City’s efforts to get involved in this worthy cause. She has created an online fundraising page for the City of Hazelwood which allows City employees, Council members and local residents to make donations.

2014 Valley of Flowers Queen Candidate Applications Applications for the 2014 Valley of Flowers Queen Candidates are now available. They may be picked up at the Valley of Flowers office, 601 rue St. Charles in Florissant. Applications are also available by request to 314.837.0033 via mail, email or fax or download from the website at www.florissantvalleyofflowers.com.

Candidates must be 16 years of age by April 30, 2014, a junior in high school, and a resident of the City of Florissant. Candidates must be sponsored by a business. However, the business does not have to be located in Florissant. The number of candidates is limited to 25. Candidates will be selected in the order in which the completed application is received by the Valley of Flowers office.

Rules and regulations for queen candidates are included with the application. Completed applications will be accepted until Feb. 27, 2014. The parade theme this year is “Valley of Flowers Salutes St. Louis’ 250th Birthday”.

Judging will take place at the James J. Eagan Center on Sunday, April 6, 2014. A dinner to recognize the candidates, sponsors and families will follow. Candidates are judged on poise and personality. The winner will be announced after the Valley of Flowers Parade on Sunday, May 4, 2014. A scholarship in the amount of $1,000 will be awarded the Queen upon completion of her reign along with many other gifts and prizes.

2014 Valley of Flowers Activities Applications Now Available Since its start in 1963, the Valley of Flowers festival has grown to include dozens of events. This year Florissant, Missouri celebrates the first Festival of spring on May 2, 3, and 4. The Valley of Flowers Committee has chosen “Valley of Flowers Celebrates St. Louis’ 250th Birthday” as the theme for 2014.

Applications for the 2014 Valley of Flowers parade, craft fair, flea market, food and game booths are now available. Colder Than Normal Temperatures Could Mean Higher than Normal Utility Bills

Missourians are being reminded that extremely cold temperatures in early February could mean higher than normal utility bills due to increased energy usage to heat homes and businesses.

“Typically, heating appliances will run more when the outside temperatures are extremely cold, even if the thermostat setting hasn’t been changed,” said Public Service Commission Chairman Robert Kenney. “Furnaces may run longer and more often to help maintain the temperature inside the home when outside temperatures are very cold, sometimes below zero.”

As Easter Seals Midwest, formerly Life Skills, continues to expand their services, the organization recently announced the opening of three new locations in the greater St. Louis area. The nonprofit, which serves people with developmental disabilities, specializing in autism services, opened offices in South County, North County and West County.

The organization signed a lease at 3221 McKelvey in North County across from DePaul Hospital near Interstates 270 and 70.

The 5,190 square-foot office will house nine employees.

The South County office, located at 3701 South Lindbergh Boulevard in Sunset Hills, will support the organization’s Community Living employees. The 4,300 square-foot office, will house six employees.

Je’juan Berry, Marlon Griffin, Adewale Adeoye, Devin Alexander, Nate Rifkin, Ritenour High School’s (RHS) Devin Alexander and Adewale Adeoye, two of the top prep football players in the St. Louis region, recently signed letters of intent to play Division I college football. Alexander made the decision to play for the Toledo Rockets next fall, while Adeoye signed with the Utah State Aggies.

Alexander and Adeoye were joined by RHS head football coach Hoyt Gregory, athletic director Drew Lohnes and teammates. In addition, three other RHS football players signed letters of intent – including Le’juan Berry (Culver Stockton), Marlon Griffin (Culver Stockton) and Nate Rifkin (Missouri Baptist).

Alexander, a quarterback and defensive back, was named the Suburban North Conference (SNC) Player of the Year on offense as he passed for 1,783 yards, with 13 touchdowns and rushed for 1,415 yards and 20 touchdowns this past season. The 6-4, 235 pound Adeoye was named the 2013 SNC Player of the Year at defensive end after recording 81 tackles, 12 sacks and two fumble recoveries.

A Sensual Work of Art with a Checkered History Jojo Moyes burst out of the literary gate with Me Before You, a book that reduced many to tears, the tale of plucky English woman, a caretaker for an upper-class paraplegic man. Right-to-life issues intertwine with a love story in this engrossing pageturner. It remains a book I continually suggest, as do others, a word-of-mouth title that’s become a bestseller.

In The Girl You Left Behind, Moyes newest, the author again focuses on a complex issue. At the center of the controversy is a prized painting of a French woman completed before her husband is taken prisoner by the Germans in World War I. Did Sophie Lefève, the woman in the painting, give this treasured portrait to the kommandant who came under her spell when his troops occupied her village, or did the Germans confiscate the painting? Readers are left wondering as the action shifts ahead to London, 2006, and another love triangle between a couple and the coveted painting.

Thirty-two-year old Liv Halston’s husband David buys the painting for her on their honeymoon. Four years later he dies in an accident. Liv has no clue about the painting’s history, and quite innocently becomes embroiled in a dispute that nearly costs her a chance at newfound happiness with Paul.

She meets Paul quite by chance, having no idea the American works for a company that represents clients whose relatives have had art stolen from them during the world wars. When Paul sees the painting on Liv’s wall, he recognizes it as one his company has been searching for. This knowledge sparks a legal battle that threatens to upend their relationship.

Moyes raises moral questions using the framework of an engaging love affair and has written another book sure to spawn discussion. One wonders what subject Moyes will tackle next as she adds an army of admirers on this side of the pond to those she already has in the United Kingdom.

But sadly, not all kids get that opportunity.

David Welborn knows that all too well. Welborn is the Executive Director for KEEN (Kids Enjoy Exercise Now) St. Louis. His nonprofit organization provides free recreational and sports programs for kids 4-17

school or in the neighborhood because they are seen as different from their peers. That not only hurts emotionally, but it hurts physically, as well. Studies show that we all benefit from physical activity. Kids with disabilities are no different. KEEN was created to get these very special kids off the sidelines, get some exercise and feel special for who they are not what they can or cannot do.”

According to Welborn, KEEN St. Louis, was started locally by a handful of volunteers in 2005, and is an affiliate of a National organization based in Washington, D.C. KEEN’s mission is to foster the self-esteem, confidence, skills and talents of those it serves through non-competitive activities, allowing young people facing even the most significant challenges to meet their individual goals. KEEN currently offers three separate recreational programs KEEN Sports, KEEN Swim and KEEN Sings, a music and motion program,” Welborn said.

Welborn said that a typical KEEN session, each child is paired with a trained volunteer and together they may practice basketball or soccer skills, bounce on large exercise balls, race each other across the floor on scooters, have hula-hoop contests, crawl through an obstacle course, or take turns running under the large, multi-colored parachute.

“For all sessions, the presence of diverse recreational equipment enables every child, no matter their level of ability, to enjoy time with their volunteer and their peers,” Welborn said. “Adaptive equipment is provided and activities are tailored to the specific needs of each child.”

Welborn, who has spent his entire 30 year career working with and for local nonprofits including both children’s hospitals and the Muscular Dystrophy Association, will also help highlight other area programs, like his, dedicated to providing services to children with special needs.

“RoboCop”

In 1987, Peter Weller played the lead role in RoboCop, the story of a devoted police officer whose body is destroyed by criminals. OCP (Omni Consumer Products), which runs the Detroit Police Department, transforms the nearly-dead officer into an armored fighting machine.

OCP treats crime fighting as a business and this mechanized peacekeeper is simply their next product.

The original RoboCop poked fun at 1980s consumerism, but the new remake from José Padilha lacks the dark humor that made the first film such a wild ride.

Padilha takes good advantage of 26 years of technological advances, though, to create a sleeker, more tactical cyborg. Un- Robocop photo courtesy of Columbia Pictures fortunately, the human side of the film is nearly gone.

Here, Joel Kinnaman plays Alex Murphy, a Detroit police officer investigating crime and corruption in his own department. Nearly killed by a car bomb, Murphy is rebuilt by OmniCorp, a corporation that makes peace-keeping robots for foreign countries.

Raymond Sellars (Michael Keaton), head of OmniCorp, wants his RoboCop to show Americans how effective mechanical crime fighters can be on their city streets.

He hires publicists and specialists to market the cyborg to the general public.

Focusing on just the technological aspects of both films, the new RoboCop beats the old one by a mile. In the original, Peter Weller’s Alex Murphy is completely encased in his metallic body. In 2014, director José Padilha opens up the suit to show audiences exactly how much flesh and blood Murphy retains.

As an actor, Kinnaman has nothing on Weller, who brought his whole heart and soul to the project. Weller’s mechanical manner of walking, speaking, and reacting in character as RoboCop is a testament to his acting ability. By comparison, Kinnaman is a somewhat boring cyborg with the emotional range of Keanu Reeves.

Gary Oldman breathes life into the film, though, as Dr. Dennett Norton, a scientist who creates prosthetic limbs for ampu-

tees. In a scene featuring a musician trying out new mechanical arms, Norton shows his humanity, but he is easily swayed by the money offered by OmniCorp to rebuild Murphy into a war machine.

Jackie Earle Haley steals the whole movie as Rick Mattox, the OmniCorp employee who oversees their robots.

Rick has absolutely no love for RoboCop, referring to him as “Tin Man.” Mattox thinks that putting a man inside a machine is a huge mistake and he wants to prove that point.

Overall, RoboCop is not a bad film, but it can’t hold a candle to the original. José Padilha focuses too much on the tech and not enough on the heart and soul of Alex Murphy. Without those elements, the 2014 model is nothing special.

RoboCop, rated PG-13, for intense sequences of action including frenetic gun violence throughout, brief strong language, sensuality and some drug material, currently is playing in theaters.

Born and raised in South St. Louis, Steve Bryan is now based in Anaheim, California, and has been allowed access to movie and television sets to see actors and directors at work.

Though his writing has taken him far from St. Louis, Steve is, at heart, still the same wideeyed kid who spent countless hours watching classic movies at neighborhood theaters.

When it comes to higher education, I’m not about to lower my expectations.

Gary Baute Roller Derby Girls On The Flat Track The St. Chux Derby Chix are part of the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA), a national governing body for female-only, skater-owned, flat-track roller derby leagues. The league was founded in August of 2009, started bouting in 2010 and became a full WFTDA league in September of 2012. um-high heat. Add onion and garlic and cook for 2 minutes, stirring occasionally.

1 cup instant mashed potato flakes 1 cup fat free evaporated milk 1/4 cup shredded 2% milk Cheddar cheese Directions: Heat oven to 350°F. Stir soup and 1/4 cup water in large bowl. Season chicken with 1/2 teaspoon black pepper, onion powder and poultry seasoning. Heat oil in 12-inch skillet over medium-high heat.

Add chicken and cook until well browned, stirring occasionally. Add chicken and

vegetables to soup mixture and stir to coat. Spoon chicken mixture into 2-quart round casserole. Microwave remaining water in microwavable bowl on HIGH for 1 to 2 minutes or until hot. Add potato flakes and stir until water is absorbed.

Loosely cover and microwave on HIGH for 2 minutes or until mixture is hot.

Spread potato mixture over chicken mixture. Sprinkle with cheese. Bake for 40 minutes or until chicken mixture is hot and bubbling.

Season chicken with chili powder mixture. Heat oil in 12-inch skillet over medium-high heat. Add chicken and cook for 6 minutes or until browned on both sides.

Add garlic and onions and cook; stir for 1 minute. Stir in soup, picante sauce and water and heat to a boil. Reduce heat to medium-low. Add beans and corn. Cover and cook for 15 minutes or until chicken is cooked through. Sprinkle with cilantro.

Joe Morice The Fifties and Now I remember the Western Auto store in my small town. It was run by a local man that spent most of his time there and was well respected and liked by his customers and friends. This was the days of one or two channels on black and white televisions and Edward R. Murrow. Small businesses lined Main Street and thriving was considered making a small profit and living in homes they could afford. Those homes might be considered starter homes these days.

There were other stores along Main Street; drug stores, barber shops, a small theatre, a hardware store, a department store, a dime store and so on. I remember the ones that were owned by families of my classmates. The drug store included a soda fountain and comic book racks. Fountain cokes were delicious; far better than the bottled stuff.

Family cars were usually stick shifts with am radios and little else. Wives stayed home and raised children while husbands worked. Children went to schools where they all knew each other. There weren’t thousands of them…yet. Misbehaving meant a smack on occasion. Small children that acquired minor injuries while playing were treated by teachers that sometimes kissed their hurts and hugged them. In today’s world this would have meant dismissal and lawsuits.

The town had only one lawyer and he was the county’s district attorney. He often handled legal affairs of victims along with the victimizers. It usually turned out fair and seldom went to court.

Parking was diagonal on Main Street.

The town sheriff finally had to write parking tickets for locals and farmers that refused to feed the new parking meters. One sometimes saw him in a heated argument with a driver who received one. Saturday night drunks sometimes ended up in jail and were freed the next morning.

I’m probably describing Mayberry RFD here. One thing stands out above all else when I compare those days to now. Hate and prejudice were seldom openly demonstrated. We had blacks in town. Although they were sometimes eyed with suspicion or prejudice by whites, they weren’t openly scorned, at least not by the kids. Republicans and Democrats sometimes argued but seldom did it heat up into a conflagration. Both sides often attended barbecues and other events together.

Civil discourse usually occurred with dignity and compassion. Rabid hatred seldom reared its ugly head.

Businesses weren’t huge and soulless like the present. Profiteering was seldom encountered. Goods were American made. Farms were owned by families instead of sprawling corporations. There were still middle-men that profiteered between the farmers and the grocery stores but they hadn’t made it to billionaire levels yet.

Was life better? Only in some ways. We still had bullies, bigots and violent drunks. People didn’t live as long because medical science was in its infancy compared to now. Kids still got in fights at school. Girls still got pregnant before graduating from High School.

Human frailties existed, just as now.

I suppose the main difference was expectations. We didn’t expect to get rich overnight. We didn’t expect to get a college education and then a high paying job although a few of us did. None of us foresaw the hatred, greed and corruption that has divided America in recent years. How did we let that happen?
