DIY Tips to Get Your Roof Ready for Winter Forecasters are predicting cold and wintry months ahead for St. Louis. • Check for cracks. St. Louis winters typically bring repeated cycles of freezing and melting, which stress your roof system and can cause cracks. Your roof may have cracks from last year’s winter.

Consider calling a roofing professional to handle the following tips: • Eliminate any standing water and determine its source. If water is sitting anywhere on your roof, there is a problem that may need correcting before you see evidence in your home or business.

• Remove deteriorated caulking and roofing cement and reapply. Make sure the sealant around any skylights and HVAC systems is secure. Periodically, sealant needs to be reinforced or replaced.

• Request a free inspection. Recognizing that it’s hard to assess your roof at ground-level and not advisable for homeowners to be crawling on the roof, do not hesitate to call a roofing professional.

Hazelwood Residents with Charter Service Must Take Action to Receive Digital Signal Residents living in the City of Hazelwood, who are Charter Communications customers, will soon have access to more than 179 high definition (HD) channels. As part of this upgrade process, customers must take action by acquiring a Charter-issued digital set-top converter for each of their televisions.

Customers in Hazelwood must acquire a digital set-top converter before Jan. 21. Those who recently signed up for Charter cable service and already have a digital set-top converter installed on all TVs do not need to take action.

Charter is making it easy for customers to obtain digital set-top converters at no cost.

The company will be communicating with customers about its scheduled upgrade date via direct mail, bill messages, outbound calls, and messages scrolled across the bottom of the TV screen prior to the cutover. Hazelwood Offers Recycling Program for Residents’ Real Christmas Trees

Real Christmas trees are biodegradable and can be easily reused or recycled for mulch and other purposes. In keeping with its recycling efforts, the City of Hazelwood has formed a partnership with Allied Waste Services for this year’s Holiday Tree PickUp Program. Residents now have the convenience of leaving them at the street curb for pick-up instead of taking them somewhere for disposal or allowing them to clutter local landfills.

Allied will be picking up real Christmas trees free of charge for Hazelwood residents during the first two weeks in January. All they have to do is place their trees at the street curb by 7am on their regular recycling day during this period. If the tree is over six-feet tall, it will need to be cut in half. The trunk of the tree should be facing the street. In addition, all tinsel and ornaments must be removed from the tree for pick up.

After the initial two weeks, Allied will charge residents $10 per pick-up. Residents who need their tree taken away at this point will have to call Allied’s Customer Service Department at 636. 947.5959 to schedule a pick-up appointment.

“Hazelwood’s Biggest Loser” Contest Offers Residents Chance to Lose Weight For Hazelwood residents making a New Year’s resolution to lose weight, the Parks and Recreation Division is hosting a “Hazelwood’s Biggest Loser” contest for individuals, ages 16 and over.

This 12-week period will begin on Jan. 6 and end on March 31. The fee for residents is $20, ID card required. Participants will be given unlimited use of the fitness rooms at both recreation centers and a 20 percent discount off any fitness

programs during the contest. All participants must attend a kick-off meeting at 7pm on Jan. 6 at the Hazelwood Community Center.

Weigh-ins for “Hazelwood’s Biggest Loser” will be held every two weeks and the results tracked

by Parks and Recreation supervisors. The final weigh-in will be March 31. One male and one female winner will be determined by who loses the most weight. Prizes include a 2014 Individual Premier Pass and a 2014 Individual Season Pass to Hazelwood’s White Birch Bay Aquatic Center. Everyone who loses 20 lbs. receives $5 in Recreation Bucks.

Other price changes scheduled to take place on Jan. 1, 2014 include the cost of park permits. In 2014, a park permit will cost $40 for residents and $50 for non-residents.

Non-residents can only rent pavilions at Musick Park and Howdershell Park within 30 days of the event date.

Resident Fitness Preview Event The James J. Eagan Center invites all Florissant residents with a current resident card to take advantage of the upcoming free Fitness Preview on Saturday, Jan. 4 from 8am-9pm.

Residents are welcomed to utilize all that the Center has to offer, use the fitness center, go for a swim, or try variety of fitness classes free.

Ferguson License Office Contract Awarded The Office of Administration, in conjunction with the Missouri Department of Revenue, has awarded the management contract for the Ferguson License Office to the Lions Club of Ferguson.

The office will remain at its current location at 728 S. Florissant Rd. The Club’s contract includes an annual commitment to return 50 percent of future processing fees to the state.

Welding Company to Bond with St. Louis City Jones & Lockhart Welding, Inc. will soon leave St. Louis County for the City when the company moves its headquarters eastward in March of 2014.

Jones & Lockhart Welding will move to its new 51,000-square-foot location at 3401 Morgan Ford which is situated on 4.5 acres. The company recently purchased the building for $820,000 and will invest $460,000 in renovations for electrical work and office upgrades.

An additional $250,000 will be spent on new

equipment including cranes and heat treat ovens. Jones & Lockhart Welding was previously located at 10500 Page in a 16,000-square-foot building.

“Our current location was too far from our customer base,” said Jones & Lockhart Welding owner and president Steve Jones. “We needed better highway access and more space to grow our business.” Jones said he is the third generation to run the company that his grandfather started more than 60 years ago.

Florissant License Office Contract up for Bid The Missouri Office of Administration is now accepting management contract bids for the Florissant License Office. Interested individuals and groups must submit their bids to operate the Florissant License Office by Jan. 17, 2014.

A copy of the Request for Proposal (RFP) bidders are required to use to develop their bids can be viewed on line. Prospective bidders may also tour the Florissant office from 5:30 to 6:30pm Jan. 2, 2014 to gain perspective on how a license office is operated.

In fiscal year 2013, more than 146,000 transactions were conducted at the Florissant office, generating $496,382 in agent processing fees.

The Missouri Department of Revenue oversees 182 license offices which are each operated by independent agents. All of the license offices were put out for bid under the competitive procurement process in 2009. Contracts were awarded for one year with three one-year renewal options. The move toward a competitive procurement process of the license offices overhauled the way local motor vehicle and driver license offices are awarded and was one of the first actions of Gov. Jay Nixon’s administration.

Pattonville Senior Signs Agreement Pattonville High School senior Kaely Fitterling recently signed an agreement to play soccer at Concordia University in Chicago. She also received an academic scholarship from the university.

Fitterling was a member of the girls varsity soccer team that made it to the state quarterfinals in 2013 and 2012. Her team last year completed its season with a 21-6-1 record and was named Conference Champions, District ChamPattonville senior Kaley Fitterling is shown signing an agreement to play soccer for Concordia pions and State Sectional University Champions. At the end of the entire soccer season, last year’s team was ranked fifth in the state. Fitterling was named Second Team All Conference in 2013 and 2011.

Pattonville Senior Published in National Spanish Journal Pattonville High School senior Laura McAdon was chosen to have an essay published in Albricias, the official journal of the Spanish National Honor Society. McAdon, who most recently completed College Credit Spanish IV under teacher Dr. Silvia Hilker, was a member of the Pattonville Spanish National Honor Society in her sophomore and junior years. St. Louis Community College Joins Manufacturing Institute’s M-List The Manufacturing Institute has named St. Louis Community College the newest member of the M-List. STLCC is acknowledged for its outstanding precision machining, production and logistics programs.

The M-List recognizes high schools, community colleges and universities that are teaching manufacturing students to industry standards. Specifically, these institutions offer students the opportunity to earn National Association of Manufacturers-endorsed manufacturing skills certifications as a standard part of their manufacturing education programs.

STLCC-Florissant Valley Hosts Martin Luther King Jr. Birthday Celebration St. Louis Community College-Florissant Valley will host its annual celebration in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. at 3pm, Jan. 19, in the Terry M. Fischer Theater on campus.

The theme is “50 Years: Working Together to Celebrate the Legacy.”

Terrence Freeman will serve as keynote speaker. Freeman is a professor in engineering science and has been with the college since 1982. He was an adviser to the president for seven years on multicultural affairs, coordinated Project Chart to encourage underrepresented students to pursue careers in the science, technology, engineering and mathematics fields, and is an adviser for the National Society of Black Engineers. He helped develop the minority engineering transfer program and has hosted nine students from South and Central America.

The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and the Council for Advancement and Support of Education recently named Freeman the 2013 Missouri Professor of the Year.

The event will feature the winners of the annual North County Churches Uniting for Racial Harmony and Justice (NCCU) Oratorical Contest, readings from STLCC students, musical performances from the Third Presbyterian Church Choir and an interpretative dance piece by Shawntelle Fisher.

From little on, Henri Matisse, a Frenchman relished art. He was continually creating, even drawing pictures in his law book. Soon his passion took front seat. He ditched law and set off to Paris to become an artist.

“He painted pictures year after year. He was happy, and his paintings made people happy.”

Sadly, old age brought an end to Matisse’s ability to paint. Afflicted with illness, Matisse was wheelchair bound, yet pictures continued to come to him in dreams. On a trip to the seaside to recover, Matisse made a discovery. He began scissoring colorful shapes out of paper. His creations became a cut above and remain one of the calling cards for which Matisse is remembered.

Missouri Civil Air Patrol Honors Veterans at Annual Wreaths Across America Day For the eighth year in a row, the Missouri Wing of the Civil Air Patrol, U.S. Air Force Auxiliary, hosted the annual Wreaths Across America Day ceremony at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery on Dec.14, 2013. Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery is the nation’s second largest veterans’ cemetery after Arlington National Cemetery. Almost 100 members of the general public – including Patriot Guard Riders, Gold Star Mothers, Sons of the American Revolution, Survivor Outreach Services, Rockwood South Middle School National Junior Honor Society, Youth Excited About Helping (YEAH) and Civil Air Patrol – braved 3-5 inches of fresh overnight snow throughout the greater St. Louis area to help place more than 500 remembrance wreaths in honor of those who gave their lives in service for our country, as well as those who have served and are serving in our nation’s armed forces. In addition, seven special wreaths representing the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force, Coast Guard, Merchant Marine, and POW/MIA were presented during a short ceremony.

Heat oven to 350°F (325°F for dark or nonstick pans).

Grease bottom only of 8-by-4-inch loaf pan with shortening or cooking spray, and place paper baking cup in each of 18 regular-size muffin cups.

2. In large bowl, beat cake mix, bananas, oil, water and eggs with electric mixer on low speed 30 seconds. Beat on medium speed 2 minutes, scraping bowl occasionally, until smooth. Place 1 3/4 cups batter into loaf pan. Spoon remaining batter into muffin cups.

3. Bake loaf cake 35 to 40 minutes and cupcakes 18 to 23 minutes or until toothpick inserted in center of cake comes out clean. Cool 10 minutes; remove from pans to cooling rack. Cool completely, about 30 minutes. For easier handling,

Decorate with peas. Use remaining frosting to frost cupcakes, if desired. Store cake and cupcakes loosely covered in refrigerator.

Joe Morice I Write Like I Talk A friend complained, “You write like you talk.” I said, “You think?”

He said, “If you had to write a college thesis, you would fail miserably.” I said, “So what’s your point?”

He was right, of course. I took a lesson from, among others, the late Robert B Parker who wrote all the famous tongue-in-cheek Spencer who-done-it books.

Instead of writing or saying, “I assume I made a mistake,” his would say, “Guess I goofed.” It’s how I talk and it endeared me to Parker’s style of not wasting words. I’m unsure if the TV adaptation, Spencer For Hire had the same speech patterns. It was too badly cast and low budget to hold my interest longer than the first ten-commercial break.

If I were to complain about the idiosyncrasies of speech, it would be about the length of political speeches. Presidents throughout history have made the mistake of losing their audience’s attention with

over-long harangues on various subjects. An exception was Abe Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address, which may be one of the most famous speeches in US history with only 243 words.

Ironically, Lincoln was probably the most quoted man in the world. Yet according to some experts, if he said everything he was quoted on, he would’ve had to speak 24/7 for over a hundred years.

President Obama is famous for being a great speaker. Yet in my opinion, he doesn’t seem to know when to quit…thus losing his audience who get bored and go forage for nibbles in the kitchen.

I seldom listened to presidential speeches since Lyndon Johnson was president. Besides being a real let-down after hearing the late John F. Kennedy, Johnson bored me to tears. Perhaps I was suffering a short attention span but so were the majority of his listeners. I suppose this trait made him good at filibustering when he was a senator but then, so might teenage girls jabbering on cell phones about boys.

Another acquaintance wrote several books but unfortunately, none were ever published. I read part of one and found it almost as boring as a fifties World History school book. She was an English teacher and the book was so grammatically cor-

rect, it sounded like an instruction manual on how to change a tire.

I admit not having the correct degree for my vocation and I suppose it’s why I’m not adept at writing like a Harvard law professor but I never wanted to.

I often wonder if those presidents and second runner-ups understood that when their speeches become longer than a few minutes, it creates suspicion among their listeners. It reminds me of a comment in Shakespeare’s Hamlet, “The lady doth protest too much, methinks,” spoken by Hamlet’s mother. In other words, like that protest, over-long speeches would be much more believable if they weren’t so vocally longwinded on the subject matter.

By keeping it short, the readers and listeners are more prone to like it and remember it. If I were to say, “When I walked down the basement steps this morning, I came upon a number of insects crawling about the floor as if they expected to find food.” you might think I majored in Pomposity 101 and looked at your watch. “If I were to say, “When I was in the basement this morning, I saw some bugs crawling around looking for crumbs.” You might give me a tip on which insecticide works best or ask who the heck was eating sandwiches in the basement?
