he Family Support Center has a mission to protect children, strengthen families and prevent child abuse. One of its programs, the Crisis Nursery, helps families with much-needed child care.

“The family is what’s important, and that’s what we’re here for,” Bonnie Peters, executive director of TFSC, said.

The Crisis Nursery program offers free care for up to 72 hours for any child from birth to age 11 at three locations in West Valley City, Midvale and Sugar House.

When parents have an emergency, don’t have anyone to watch their child or are even stressed and need a break, the Crisis Nursery offers a sanctuary for those parents.

“There’s no stigma, no judgment when you come through the door,” Barbara Stallone, development director of TFSC, said.

Stallone said sometimes parents have hospital emergencies, doctor’s appointments or a parent needs to get a protective order.

“We don’t want the kids to be involved in all of that, we just want them here where it’s safe,” Stallone said. “It’s much easier than trying to take three kids under five to a doctor’s appointment.”

Included with the child care, the nurseries offer wrap-around services as well where they have mental health counselors, classes—parent education, anger management, women’s domestic violence survivors are a few examples—offered in English and Spanish or in-home parenting programs that offers a one-onone collaboration.

“The wrap-around services we have are very important, that’s how we achieve the results that we do in each of our programs. If someone has a problem in one area then we have other areas that can come in and augment the situation,” Peters said. “We’re happy we have that, we’re proud of it and we’re looking forward to have people know more about us.”

Each location was a home donated by a local benefactor. While West Valley’s nursery was established more recently in 2008, the Sugar House nursery opened in 1977 and the Midvale location soon followed in the early 80’s serving the county for almost four decades. TFSC has plans to open a nursery in Glendale as well.

Stallone said they look at areas with trends of substantiated abuse claims and whether it’s disproportionate to neighboring areas. At the moment,

Stallone said they need more money to open a center in Glendale unless another benefactor can donate a home.

The homes are equipped with a kitchen, a play area, boys’ and girls’ rooms with bunk beds, necessary hygienic care and a room for a house parent to stay.

“The kids are not uptight about coming here, it’s a home atmosphere, it’s like going to grandma’s house…so the kids are not traumatized. The kids are more playful and more comfortable,” Peters said.

West Valley City is normally its busiest location being open 24 hours. That may change with Midvale to be open 24 hours starting Oct. 3. The nurseries care for about 12 kids every day with a four to one ratio of kids to staff, made up of foster grandparents, staff workers and volunteers who all pass background checks.

While TFSC watches for abuse claim trends, Peters said it’s hard to quantify the number of child abuse cases that don’t happen, but those numbers don’t increase in areas near the crisis nurseries.

“How do you document abuse that hasn’t happened? You really can’t, but we know that we have saved kids from being abused and killed… sometimes just being away from your children can save your

sanity,” Peters said.

“If you’re a mother with two toddlers and a newborn and you haven’t slept in three days, you can come drop all three kids off, go home and sleep for four hours and you’re a new person,” Stallone added.

To see how they are affecting the families coming to the centers, parents are given impact surveys. Questions include, “have you felt an increase in your ability to deal with familial stress,” or “do you believe your child was safer because you used this service?” The amount of people who said yes: more than 80 percent.

“We try to watch the trend line carefully to make sure we are providing a value for the money we’re looking to raise,” Stallone said.

In its 2015 annual report—the 2016 numbers aren’t available yet—TFSC had 76 percent of its finances come from government funding and grants and donations. The crisis nurseries received the largest portion of those finances with more than $600,000.

The report also states that more than 61,000 hours of care was provided to 1,849 children who made 11,762 visits to the crisis nursery. This also includes 1,218 overnight stays and 11,554 meals.

In order accomplish what the nurseries and all of TFSC’s other programs do, volunteers are essential.

From 2015 to 2016, TFSC saw an increase from 1,200 to 1,600 volunteers. Stallone said the value of those volunteers’ service hours can range up to $260,000 if those volunteers were all paid.

But the results of what the nurseries grant are incalculable. “[The Crisis Nursery] provides service, help and healing for so many at the youngest level,” Peters said. Those benefits also extend to the parental level.

“It’s okay to take a break from your kids, it doesn’t make you a bad mom, it makes you a great mom to recognize that filling your own cup means you can take better care of your kids,” Stallone said.

“We let people feel like coming here and leaving their kids for a little bit of time is strengthening and helping them.”

The Midvale nursery is located at 777 West Center Street, the Sugar House nursery is at 2020 Lake Street and the West Valley nursery is at 3663 South 3600 West.

Dogs Leap at Personal Pool Day

hey jumped, they swam, and they played fetch. Nearly 300 tail waggin’, doggy paddlin’ pooches had a day to remember at the annual Dog Days of Summer event on Saturday, Sept. 17 at the West Valley City Family Fitness Center. “[The dogs] have so much fun with this,” dog owner Anna Smith said.

Every year the Family Fitness Center closes and cleans the pool. But before embarking on the month-long maintenance, the pool is opened up to dogs where they can swim around the pool participating events like the Doggy Long Jump contest or the Doggy Paddle Race. Raffles were also held throughout the day to participants with dog appropriate prizes like treats or collars.

This is the 12th consecutive year the event has been held. Carly Kent is the pool coordinator at the Family Fitness Center and has been here since its inception when she was a lifeguard.

“We thought it was a good idea and worth a try and it’s just kept going,” Kent said.

Before the aquatic events began, a 2K and 5K was held outside around Centennial Park. The first half hour of the pool was reserved for smaller dogs under 25 pounds before opening up to bigger dogs and the aquatic events.

other side of the pool to their owner. Only three dogs completed the swim with the majority of the others reaching their toy and returning to the closest edge of the pool. “[The dogs are] like, ‘I got my ball, I’m done

with this,’” Smith said with a laugh.

Kent said 2016 was the biggest event they’ve had yet with 300 dogs. A dog named Lola won the Doggy Long Jump with a jump of 14.5 feet. While a dog named Muddy won the Doggy Paddle Race

with a time of 28.5 seconds.

Seeing all the dogs enjoy themselves is one of Kent’s favorite parts of the event.

“I really like dogs. It’s fun to watch the dogs jumping and playing,” Kent said. It’s the type of craziness she can enjoy and handle. “And I get to control chaos.”

West Valley City does not currently have a dog park and Kent said this creates an opportunity that local residents otherwise couldn’t enjoy.

“It gives [dog owners] a chance to bond with their pets…and with no dog park, this kind of helps support the dogs in our community,” Kent said.

“I’d love to see a dog park [in West Valley] and it would be great if [the dogs] had their own pool too,” Smith said.

The West Valley City Animal Shelter was also on hand with a pet vaccination clinic and to accept donated items. Attendees received a dollar discount for any items donated per dog like toys, leashes, treats, brushes, nail clippers or shampoo.

There was a dog bathing area available for canines prior to leaving the event.

With dogs playing fetch in the pools and occasionally relieving themselves in the water as well, it’s as good a time as ever to clean the pools.

“Yeah,” said Kent, “it can get a little smelly.” l

Schools to Experience Benefits from CEP Funding

fter-school programs received an extra boost from West Valley City.

The West Valley City Council voted unanimously during a city council meeting on Sept. 13 to appropriate funds of $90,000 to the Community Education Partnership of West Valley City (CEP). CEP is a non-profit corporation that, for more than 10 years, has offered students afterschool and outside of school time programs in West Valley City.

Councilman Steve Buhler has been the CEP chair for more than five years.

“This is essentially the only thing that we, as a city government, do to support education. We don’t run the school districts, we don’t support charter schools monetarily, we support and help the CEP,” Buhler said.

Margaret Peterson, CEP executive director, said they typically receive their funding from the state board of education but the state has required CEP to cover their payroll before releasing the grant funds. The CEP then approached the city for help.

“We are held to very high standards by the state auditor and if we’re not able to meet those requirements, we will not be able to function. And our contracts with the state would be turned over to the state, I’m not sure what would happen to them and I’m not interested in letting that happen,” Peterson said during the city council meeting.

The fund gives the CEP a pool to draw upon to expedite the actions already being taken by the CEP. Councilwoman Karen Lang requested that the appropriation was amended to include a yearly review. She said she wanted to ensure that the yearly review is reported to the city council to safeguard the expenditure of the funds.

“This is a great program, there are numerous schools next to my house it benefits. I want to make sure it happens but I want to make sure we’re protecting our residents as well,” Lang said.

Students have seen progress in different areas over the last six years. CEP reported that teachers who worked with students who also participate in the after-school programs saw a 64 percent increase in academic performance and a 61 percent increase in classroom participation. The survey results come from after-school programs in 19 Granite School District schools in West Valley City from 2011 to 2016.

“Our outcomes are tremendous,” Peterson said. CEP programs exist at all schools in West Valley except two elementary schools.

Various principals from West Valley schools were on hand to voice their appreciation and support of the funding to keep the programs going.

Connie McCann, Rolling Meadows Elementary principal, said her school of more than

500 students has at least 60 stay every day after school. McCann said it provides students a place to be after school before their parents come home from work as well as necessary academic tutoring.

“We really look to this program and need this for our school,” McCann said.

Julie Smith, co-coordinator at Rolling Meadows, said it is more than just academic assistance.

“It’s a personal relationship we have with those kids, that’s as important as the academics… they know us and seek us out throughout the day to tell us things,” Smith said.

Sue Dickey, Monroe Elementary principal, has an Extended Days program that runs for 34 weeks of the year. Dickey said 432 of her 700 students were touched by the program that has multiple subjects for the kids to be involved in such as Girl Scouts, science tutoring, Latina arts or computer coding to name a few.

“Because of CEP, these programs are available month after month, year after year,” Dickey said.

John Paul Sorensen, West Lake STEM Jr. High vice principal, has been teaching in the valley for 12 years. He said there are many at-risk students at these schools who need this programming. “[CEP program] is critical, not having it would be crippling,” Sorensen said. l

Townhomes, Mixed-Use Commercial Coming West

Redwood Road is a changin’.

The West Valley City Council voted 6-1 to see a zone change from manufacturing to residential multi-family making way for a townhome development agreement to be passed unanimously by the city council.

“I believe this is very good for our city,” Councilman Tom Huynh said.

The property is located at 3579 and 3605 South Redwood Road on 7.1 acres. The proposal shows that the western portion of the property will have three commercial building with offices, restaurants and retail uses. While the rest of the property will be balanced out with townhomes.

One neighboring resident was disappointed with the development agreement. He said there is already dust blowing into his backyard. He lives in a house bordering the property to the east.

“Townhomes are very tall…I don’t like the proposition, all I can do is probably move and sell house,” the resident said having lived at his current house for 10 years.

The 1,800-square-foot townhomes are set to be two or three stories with two-car garages.

Russell Platt, the developer of the project, said he feels townhomes are the right development for that spot.

“Going from the hard commercial to residential, I think a townhome development makes a perfect transitional zone,” Platt said. He added that he thought the townhomes would be sold at around $159,000 but are actually going for $235,000.

Platt said after working with the West Valley City Planning Commission, they agreed to drop the density to 12 units per acre.

“It’s a great place to be, we want to be a great neighbor, we want to do a really nice product on this piece,” Platt said.

Councilman Steve Buhler said its actually better for surrounding residents that zone be changed to residential multi-family.

“Although the property is not developed currently, anyone who owns or buys that property could develop it and I think there’s a much greater risk to your enjoyment of your property to have it zoned manufacturing,” Buhler said. “This is a better

use for that area and for the neighbors right there than the risk of leaving it manufacturing and having something much more disturbing and obtrusive coming into there.”

While Councilwoman Karen Lang, who dissented on her vote, asked if the scheduled park inside the development could be moved to the eastern portion of the property for a softer transition. Platt said the park is better located in the center of the development for the people who will live in the area.

Huynh said he feels good about the area where the development is going in.

“It’s great for our area on Redwood Road and we can support further retail stores in that area,” Huynh said. l

5 to 10 culminating in a 28-21 victory by the football team against Hillcrest High and ending with the homecoming dance at the school.

The school commemorated the week with a different event each day including the Granger Carnival on Sept. 7. A car show featuring a classic from the Granger Debate Team as well as a GTM X Factory Five (a racing car).

which involves participants being tethered by cord, then see how far they can run before being pulled back.

Other booths were available for henna tattoos, caricatures drawn by the art club, old-fashioned wedding photos and a television where people could play Super Smash Brothers on a Wii console. Chess games were available to go along with the pingpong table. Ice cream was served by the Parent Teacher Student Association.

Miss Utah, Lauren Wilson, made an appearance talking with students and promoting suicide awareness and prevention.

People were encouraged to wear white for the color run where participants were given bags of color for a tag-like event. l

Finalists for Presidential Award Make Subjects Engaging

N

eil Armstrong achieved excellence by completing the first mission to the moon.

Now, teachers at his namesake’s academy in West Valley City are achieving excellence too, but here on earth.

Jennifer Bodell and Julie Christensen were named state finalists for the 2016 Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST). While Bodell is now an instructional coach at West Lake STEM Jr. High, both were teachers at Neil Armstrong Academy last year.

“It’s certainly well-deserved. [They’ve] worked very hard to become the teachers [they] are today, it’s a good recognition of all of their efforts over that time,” Matt Goebel, principal at Neil Armstrong academy said.

A national panel of scientists, mathematicians and educators recommend up to 108 teachers to receive the presidential award. The panel will then review the finalists’ applications and select one math teacher and one science teacher from each state.

In order to be named a finalist, the teachers had to be first nominated then undergo an extensive application process that involved a video of them teaching, letters of recommendation and a five-part essay.

The grueling process afforded each teacher the chance to reflect on their teaching ability. Bodell said it’s a great reminder that if you’re not enhancing your abilities than those abilities can disappear.

“There is always room to grow,” Bodell, a teacher for 20 years, said. “You can always improve your teaching and there are always new things to try.

If you stay the same, you lose it.” “[The application] took a lot of time and effort and reflection on my teaching so I was excited to grow as a teacher from that but then to actually become a finalist, it was exciting,” Christensen said.

Both teachers said they found out via email and were thrilled to be named finalists. Christensen said she didn’t have high hopes.

“It was one of those I submitted hoping, but not really expecting,” Christensen said.

Awardees will receive $10,000 from the National Science Foundation and an all-expense paid trip to Washington, D.C. for the award ceremonies.

Finding a way to keep a subject like math engaging for all students can be a challenge. For Christensen, a teacher for 11 years, she said her enthusiasm for the subject is key.

“My attitude shows [my students] how much I love math and once they come into my class and see that it can be hands-on then it can start to change their attitude,” Christensen said.

Bodell demonstrated a very hands-on approach with some of her teaching methods. When teaching

the kids about decimals, she uses a stock market simulation where the kids receive $1,000 to put on real stocks and then every day they do the math to find out whether they earned or lost money.

“It’s just trying to connect it to the real world that we use decimals, we use it with money all the time,” Bodell said. “They don’t want to work in a math book or a science book. They’re investigating and coming up with their own conclusions, their own ‘aha’ moment…I let them find their own [‘aha’ moment].”

Bodell also uses college football teams for the kids to make graphs out of the players’ weight or understand fractions and statistics with the teams’ wins and losses.

“Just try and make it fun for them and they usually start to see the value in it and they see that it is fun,” Christensen said.

Goebel said Christensen understands both math and children, which makes her such an effective teacher.

“She unites the two in a beautiful way,” Goebel said.

Christensen taught at Gourley Elementary before coming to Neil Armstrong Academy and throughout her teaching experience she said she’s learned how important mistakes are in the learning process. It’s a philosophy that’s been compounded even more at Neil Armstrong Academy. “[Mistakes] happen every day in the classroom.

As teachers we do that, as learners we do that and [we want] to make that kind of environment where our kids are willing to take a chance and try even if it’s not going to work to see how we can improve the fails and try to make it successful,” Christensen said.

As an instructional coach, Bodell is a support system for teachers by modeling lesson plans and giving feedback on their teaching. Along with teaching kids, she helps teachers learn how to teach.

This is her first year at West Lake STEM Jr. High as an instructional coach.

Bodell said connecting with a student is possibly the most important thing a teacher can do. “A teacher can have all the content knowledge in the world, they can know everything about math or science, [but] if they can’t make that connection, the kids don’t see the value in knowing that information,” Bodell said.

Both finalists share a love for working with children that has allowed them to teach effectively thereby earning national recognition.

“I love seeing the student’s growth, in both their academics and their self-esteem. Where they come in and feel like they can’t do it and then realize that they can,” Christensen said. “[Kids] are sponges,” Bodell said. “They want to be taught new things in a fun and exciting way and that’s why I love to teach.” l

New Principals Highlight Love for Profession

A

s West Valley City’s school start, new faces will be seen in the hallways, including the faces of new head principals at four different schools.

The West Valley Journal caught up with all as they start their journey to ask about their backgrounds and outlook on education.

Ike Spencer Valley Jr. High School A former running back for the Minnesota Vikings drafted out of the University of Utah, Spencer entered his first year at Valley Jr. High after spending the previous six years as principal at West Lake Jr. High.

Spencer said he works with a great staff, which has eased the transition.

“I never feel like people work for me, I feel like we all work with each other,” Spencer, a native of Compton, Calif., said.

Spencer’s philosophy of working with kids means respecting them and understanding their needs.

“You got to give them the opportunity to be respectful and sometimes the way you do that is by being respectful to them first,” Spencer said.

It also means meeting the students at their level of knowledge. Spencer gave the example of a construction class they created at West Lake when some students were struggling with math.

“It was basically woodshop, but we threw the math component in so everybody had to understand the math that went along with the building,” Spencer said. Many of the students had parents who worked in construction.

“You got to find what’s good in the kids,” Spencer said.

He often sits down with students during lunch to get to know them oftentimes facilitating friendships between students who otherwise wouldn’t know their classmates’ interest.

This included meeting a student at Valley whose dad went to high school with Spencer in Compton. It gave Spencer an opportunity to reminisce with a former classmate.

At the conclusion of his football career, Spencer—who earned his master’s degree in education—came back to Utah to work for Xerox becoming the first African-American area manager in Utah. But it was after his three kids left for college that Spencer decided to jump back in the education game. “[While at Utah] I took school very serious. I didn’t mind going back to Compton but I didn’t want to have to go back to Compton,” Spencer said. “Education is the key to all of it so after my kids got into college I decided to go back to what I really wanted to do, and that was education.”

During his time at Valley, Spencer said he hopes to involve parents more, which, as a consequence, will improve behavior.

“If the parents feel like the school is so open that they can walk in anytime, kids know there’s a good chance their parents will walk in at any time and that’s when kids do better,” Spencer said.

Carol Carroll Hunter Jr. High School She often gets the question and the answer is always the same, yes, Carol Carroll is her real name.

“People say funny stuff about it still and it never bothers me, I’m just kind of used to it,” Carroll said of people’s reaction to her name.

Once, when Carroll was a teacher, she had a principal ask her to not have the students call her by her first name before slowly realizing what he was requesting.

Having graduated from high school in Denver, Colo., Carroll moved to Utah a year later getting her undergraduate degree from the University of Utah and her master’s degree from Utah State. But it was her job as aide at Midvale Middle School that inspired her passion to work with kids.

“I really, really enjoy junior high kids, you have to know their sense of humor, that they’re still learning social skills and they say and do things that are weird, but we still love them,” Carroll said.

Carroll said there’s no other age group she’d rather work with and for that reason she loves coming to work every day.

“Sometimes what they do is just the learning process and you can’t get mad at them, you just have to teach them something different,” Carroll said.

Having previously worked as a teacher, counselor and assistant principal, Carroll takes over the job coming from her position in the Granite School District as associate director of the Youth in Custody program. Carroll would oversee all the sites where youth, in the custody of the State of Utah, were placed and got their education.

Carroll said she wants kids to remember their junior high years in a positive light.

“They are good experiences that help develop who we become…I want them to say, ‘those were really good years at Hunter Jr. High,’” Carroll said.

Carroll’s love for children extends beyond her profession with nine grandchildren.

“They are my hobby; I absolutely love them. I love to be around them,” Carroll said.

Doug Johnson Pioneer Elementary School Weeks before school was set to begin, Johnson was preparing for his fourth year as principal at Gerald Wright Elementary when the principal at Pioneer Elementary resigned to move to Washington.

The district transferred him over to Pioneer effective Aug. 3.

In his three years at Gerald Wright, Johnson oversaw the improvement in the school’s SAGE scores every year prompting the district to transfer him.

It was an immediate and sudden transition, one where Johnson needed to forge relationships quickly.

“My first and most important part of this new position is building that trusting relationship, not just with the students and teachers but with the community as well,” Johnson said.

Involving the community is Johnson’s first goal for the new school. Johnson had food trucks come to parent-teacher conferences as a way to engage the neighborhood. He also has an open door policy to address needs and concerns.

“I want [parents] to feel like [the school] is part of their community and not just a place they send their kids to come and learn,” Johnson said.

The last minute transfer, while a surprise, was not a shock.

Johnson said he is used to sudden changes. After receiving a

degree in marketing and administration from Utah State, he was working in store management with Kmart when he decided to quit focusing more time on his family.

Johnson began working as a substitute teacher eventually earning the necessary licensing and endorsements.

Johnson, a father of six, said he considers any involvement with kids a teaching and learning opportunity.

“I’m convinced that if kids feel respected, loved and appreciated then they’re going to behave differently and their academics will be different as well,” Johnson said.

As principal, Johnson said he hopes he can instill in the kids a desire to learn during his time at the school.

“It’s that they have the desire to learn the most that they can here, do the best they can and be accountable for what they’re doing to take onto the next level in their life,” Johnson said.

A native of Sugar House, Johnson is an avid photographer taking second place at the state fair for his photos. He also loves basketball and golf.

Robyn Roper Jackling Elementary School For Roper, working with kids was always in her blood. Her mom was a teacher and had other family members who worked in schools as educators.

“From the time I was young I wanted to be a teacher,” Roper, a Hillcrest High graduate, said.

And as a teacher, she hasn’t stopped learning. Roper has a master’s degree in special education with an emphasis in hearing impairments. She taught hearing-impaired students at Utah’s School for the Deaf for five years. Roper is also four classes away from finishing her doctorate in educational leadership.

After two years as an assistant principal at Hillsdale Elementary and Vista Elementary, Roper is in her first year as principal and it’s an opportunity she can relish.

“It’s a challenge to see if you can implement some things that will make positive change for others and I love challenges,” Roper said.

Positivity goes a long way, Roper said, in the development of children.

“Letting them know we care about them as kids and individuals will help us then be able to teach them,” Roper, a mother of three kids and two stepdaughters, said.

That positivity encompasses teachers as well. Roper said it’s important for them to have her support.

“They are the leaders and the change-makers. I’m here as support but they’re the ones who truly have the job of helping these kiddos,” Roper said.

Just as with Johnson and Spencer, Roper said she hopes to see more collaboration with the community in order to build a positive culture within around the school.

Now that Roper has seen her passion for teaching grow from a childhood desire to a fully-fledged career, she said this profession has an insurmountable importance in today’s world.

“It is the profession that builds all other professions. We teach young people how to think and then they go out into the world and work in various professions thinking and shaping our society,” Roper said. “So I think we have the most important job in the world.” l

School Partnerships Provide Students’ Necessities

T

he return to school meant running out for necessary back to school supplies. But for some students, two companies brought some of those supplies directly to them.

Stansbury, Academy Park and Robert Frost Elementary Schools all received donations to mark the beginning of the school year.

(Stansbury Elementary) School-focused items weren’t the only things donated. Molina partnered with various local organizations to also provide free health screenings, vision checks, immunizations, healthy snacks, resource information and entertainment.

“We were thrilled to host our Shoes for School event… and provide local students with the tools they need to succeed in school,” Rylee Curtis wrote in a press release. Curtis is the manager of community outreach for Molina Healthcare of Utah.

Diane Metzler, secretary at Stansbury, said the event really helped the kids prepare for school.

“[The kids] were able to come to school with their haircuts and their new shoes and backpacks that first day. We have a lot of them that don’t get that kind of stuff,” Metzler said.

The event impacted 850 students at Stansbury with over 800 backpacks and shoes donated to supply students with necessary equipment for the school year. With 94 percent of Stansbury students qualified for free or reduced lunches, the donations furnish important resources for the kids.

“We hope that our efforts promote education and work toward lowering the poverty rate of children in Utah,” Curtis wrote.

The benefits of the experience extend to the company’s employees. Both Discover and Molina encourage their employees to volunteer and give back to ingrain it into the companies’ culture.

Molina employees participated through the company’s Helping Hands volunteer program where employees are provided paid time off to volunteer.

Discover donated 3,200 backpacks, filled with school supplies and a T-shirt, to five elementary schools in the Granite School District (GSD). One of Discover’s charitable pillars is Success in Schools by empowering youth. Matt Towson, director of community affairs, said their relationship with GSD helps their employees support that pillar.

“Backpack drives are used as a team building opportunity, and to give our employees an opportunity to give back,” Towson said.

“It all ladders up to our mission of giving people an opportunity for a brighter financial future.”

Granite Superintendent Wins Statewide Honor

tah School Superintendents Association selected Granite School District’s Martin Bates as Utah Superintendent of the Year for 2016-17.

“It really is an honor,” Bates said. “The 41 superintendents in the state are great women and men, and we all work really hard. To be honored and recognized by them and be able to represent them is an honor.”

Bates was notified of the award in September, and he will represent the state at a national superintendent conference in February where he will be in the running for the National Superintendent of the Year title.

It’s not by chance that Bates was selected as Utah’s representative, Terry Shoemaker, executive director of the state’s superintendent association, said. The 41 superintendents in the state are a close-knit bunch, and they realize Bates has much to offer, he said.

“He’s just one who is thoughtful about policy development,” Shoemaker said. “His ability to coalesce complex issues in an understandable way made him valuable in those development processes.”

Bates didn’t plan to be a superintendent, but he did plan for a career in education. His father, grandfather and great grandfather were educators, and he said it was his goal to keep that tradition.

Early in his career he secured a job teaching math at a Provo alternative high school but took an administrative internship with Granite School District when there was an opening.

“I love it at Provo, but I figured I’d enjoy working with 1,500 kids more than just working with 180,” he said.

Bates went on to hold administrative positions in Provo and Salt Lake City schools districts before returning to Granite as the

assistant superintendent over administrative and legal services. In 2010 Bates was promoted to superintendent.

He said he desires to bring a personal touch to the role of superintendent. While he’s in charge of administrative functions, Bates said he doesn’t forget that his job is centered around education and learning, which often occurs in classrooms.

“What I feel most strongly is that our children are our most valuable possession,” Bates said. “I want to help give them a solid foundation and opportunities to grow and be successful and be contributors to the community. I try to share that.”

Bates tries to visit each school during the academic year to observe students’ learning, she said. He hosts town hall meetings at the high schools and runs a blog where he posts Superintendent Snapshots, short video clips in which he tells about news going on in the district. Superintendents across the state support the programs Bates has implemented in Granite schools, according to Shoemaker.

Bates invites teachers and administration to make school a learning-based environment instead of a teaching-based environment where it’s not about the teachers’ performance but about the students’ understanding, he said.

Schools who follow this model perform better academically, he added.

“It may sound like a little thing, this teaching and learning shift, but I am amazed at how far we have come in a few years,” he said.

“It’s been a culture shift.”

Incremental differences in education may seem insignificant at first, but Bates said he can reminisce on seven or 15 years at Granite School District and see that their faculty, staff and administration are heading in the right direction. l

The City Without a Skate Park is a Skate Park

f you are interested in finding out what words like grind box, hubba, slant rail or spine transfer mean, then head over to West Valley City’s first and only skate park; located near the family fitness center on 5600 West. The athletes there might be able to tell you.

“We are a large city and have no skate park. We certainly see the demand and have learned very quickly that if you do not have a skate park then everything is a skate park,” West Valley City Parks and Recreation Director Kevin Astill said.

The grand opening of the new skate park is scheduled for Oct. 8. The ribbon cutting will mark the beginning of what city leaders hope is a place youth and adults alike can enjoy a nontraditional sport such as boarding.

The project cost the city nearly $1.2 million. The main focus of the park is for the beginner skater.

“There are a lot of kids that do not play traditional sports, but they love this activity and they are very good and very athletic.

Some kids just don’t like football or baseball,” Astill said. “We got requests and letters from residents for this park. We could see the demand.”

The park contains several features designed for experienced skaters and several for intermediate and beginners. The park will allow skateboards, inline skates and bicycles. It contains five fun boxes (swimming pool type holes) with coping on the edges for gliding and staling. Several flat rails, ledges and ramps will provide speed and obstacles for tricks and jumps.

After the scheduled opening the parks and recreation department is planning on offering learn to skate and board instructional courses.

“We want to use it to expand the sport and offer opportunities to the community to learn to use the facility, we will offer the typical recreation programs. Mostly we are excited to cut the ribbon and let the kids go at it,” Astill said.

The park will operate during normal park hours, 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. Users skate at their own risk. Although studies done by the

skaters for public skate parks show that a majority of accidents involving skaters include a motor vehicle. The most interesting terrain for skating is found on streets and sidewalks. Centralizing the terrain in a park make a safe place for these athletes to practice their sport without the outside danger.

When a park is constructed correctly it will require virtually no maintenance. The oldest parks in the country have been in operation for nearly 30 years.

Granger Charges Like a Rhino

T

he Granger High School football team is trying to accomplish something that has not happened since 2012 — a return to the state playoffs. Senior Amata “Rhino” Tavai feels his team is charging down the path to attain that goal.

“Our season is going to end in state. I know for me and my team that is what we want. We are going to do it,” Tavai said.

Tavai is second on the team in rushing yards with 112 yards and three touchdowns.

Sione Houma leads the Lancer rushing attack with 324 yards. The ground game is the primary source of offense for the team, after five games they had only attempted six passes.

The Lancers will have to wait one more year to accomplish another feat that has evaded them; beat a rival, Hunter High School. The Wolverines have managed to defeat the Lancers 10 straight times. The last Lancer victory came in 2001, 44-13. Hunter leads the all-time series 19 to 5. On Sept. 16 the Wolverines hosted Granger for their homecoming game and managed to pull out the victory in front of a large crowd.

“Hunter is always a big game for us. Every year we look forward to that game,” Head Coach Mike Morgan said.

“We have had our moments when we have played well. We need to work a few little things and keep our composure in tight spots,” Morgan said.

Morgan said he has several players with potential to continue playing at the collegiate level.

“We have a tight end (Junior Tiatia) that has an offer from SUU, we have kids that can compete. Rhino is a great player. There is no doubt he has the potential to keep playing, but his size is not the prototypical that coaches are looking for. He can play at the next level,” Morgan said. “Sione (Houma) is also a great player, but I think it is most important that we play as a team.”

Morgan is in his third year as the Lancers’ head coach.

The Lancers are scheduled to close out their regular season at Syracuse (Oct. 7), at home against West (Oct. 13) and at home against Viewmont (Oct. 19). The state playoffs are scheduled to begin Oct. 28.

The finals are scheduled for Nov. 18 at the University of Utah. l

o mother wants to hear her child speak the words “I want to die.” But for parents of children battling depression, that is Aimee Winder Newton a fear. And for me, it became a reality when County Council District 3 one of my own children was struggling and needed help.

It was 10:30 p.m. one summer night when my son came to me and shared his thoughts of suicide. As a mother, I am so grateful that he was willing to speak up. But I didn’t know what to do or who to call. Mental illness is one of those “taboo” subjects in our culture, and we really need to change that. We also need to take seriously our teens crying out for help. My son is very brave and has allowed me to share his story so that others can get the help they need.

After this particular incidence, I learned that the University of Utah Neuropsychiatric Institute or “UNI” has a crisis line. This line is

staffed with trained counselors 24/7. You can call anytime and have a live person answer the call. It is also anonymous. But how many of us know this phone number? I didn’t. This is why I am determined to see that we have a three-digit phone number that can be used to go directly to a crisis line statewide.

Across the state there are 19 different crisis lines, many with limited hours and staffing. This past month, I invited Missy Larsen, chief of staff for Attorney General Sean Reyes, and state Rep. Steve Eliason to present to our county council on this issue.

They spoke of Utah’s suicide rate (5th highest in the nation), and discussed how suicide is now the number one killer of Utah teens.

The rate of suicide by seniors is also climbing in Utah. These leaders, as well as state Senator Daniel Thatcher, have been involved in developing the SAFEUT app. Youth are able to report unsafe behavior at school or other behavioral health-related issues and get help.

We had several mayors and city officials

present at our council meeting who expressed support for this initiative. Some tearfully shared stories of loved ones or city residents who have needed help. This truly is a crisis in our community.

I believe there is incredible consensus and support for establishing a statewide, dedicated, three-digit mental health crisis line to connect more Utahns with needed support.

Our coalition is working with stakeholders and the FCC on this issue and will look at all numbers available and determine the best one that will fit these needs.

I know there are many people still struggling, both parents aching for their children and individuals grappling with these issues themselves. It is imperative that we prioritize solving this issue. We’ll be working hard in the coming weeks and months to find a solution. In the meantime, download the SAFEUT app on your smartphone. Wolverines Combine Youth With Senior Leadership

he Hunter High School girls volleyball team is taking on a new identity. They have stepped away from its former knock your block off attitude to a team of finesse and skill.

“I feel like we are starting to make some big improvements. We started off the season very slow. We have a lot of young players, but we also have some seniors and when they come together they are pretty amazing,” second year Wolverines volleyball coach Rebecca Dees said.

“We want to be united as a team and play with a level head. We have really tried not to get caught up in the emotion of the game.”

The Wolverines have combined inexperienced players with a few upper classman.

They are learning to rely on each other and come together as a team so they can get better.

“We have some solid seniors on the team and have mixed in a few younger girls. We have a strong group coming up, some of them are not even getting playing time. We will be competitive this season and in the future. Once we decide to play together, like we have lately, you will see Hunter’s volleyball team really improve,” Dees said.

The Wolverines started the 2016 season off on the wrong path. The only won two of their first eight matches. They defeated Hillcrest 2-0 and Highland 3-2.

“We have had a few rough spots, but we are working really hard in practice to get better and play as a team,” sophomore outside hitter Caleigh Vagana said.

Dees said Vagana is a player to watch. She leads the team with 78 kills and has 16 service aces.

“She (Vagana) keeps getting better. The team depends on her in tough situations. I know she will step up and fill the role of a leader on this team. Vagana has some great hits, but she is not going to get those big hits without some great passing or a setter that can get it to the outside for her. We are making big improvements. Our goal is to get to state and start competing at that level,” Dees said.

Senior outside hitter Roni Lui is second on the team in kills with 54. Ofa Miko leads the team in blocks. Defensive specialist Katrina Azevedo has 110 digs to lead the team.

Against Granger Sept. 15 the Wolverines defeated the Lancers in three sets 25-23, 2523 and 25-19. The teams had long rallies. The final point in the second set saw the Wolverines making several key digs and sideline passes before Vagana placed a beautiful ball down the left side of the court and off a Lancer defender.

“This team is diverse and we are learning to come together,” Vagana said.

The Wolverines currently stand in sixth place in Region 2. They are just one game behind West and Syracuse for fourth place.

“Region two has some powerhouses and some coaches with a lot of history. This is a tough region, but there is no reason that we cannot battle back and compete with these teams,” Dees said.

Activities to Help Kids Understand Halloweens of Long Ago

H

alloween. It’s a holiday that leaves me confused and mystified. No, it’s not the witches brew getting to me, it’s the evolution of the holiday itself. Take for example this trunk or treat tradition where kids safely walk past parked cars, with cleverly decorated trunks that hold candy lures. Then there are the costumes, which look like characters from PG-13 Disney movies and cost a king’s ransom.

Perhaps I am confused because I had to endure candy hunting through my own neighborhood, wrapped up in a coat, with a pillowcase full of hard candy and stale raisins.

I wore a costume pieced together from torn sheets, yarn scraps and toilet paper.

It seems that the Halloweens of days gone by were much more imaginative and memorable than the picture-perfect, formulated, store-bought ones we are giving our kids today.

Perhaps a trip down your own memory lane may prove helpful in gaining perspective.

5. Watch a vintage scary Halloween movie.

While your kids’ ages will most certainly determine the movies you allow them to watch, scary movies of yesterday are less scary and less violent than many of today’s blockbusters.

Things I Learned at the Statue of Liberty

I

magine the worst family reunion ever. Add some cholera and a couple dozen languages and you’ll get an idea of the conditions immigrants faced when traveling to America in the early 1900s. You think your Aunt Maude is annoying? Imagine being stuffed in a ship’s berth with her for almost two weeks.

But then. One morning you step onto the deck and see the Statue of Liberty standing in the New York Harbor, lifting her lamp and welcoming you to America. Breathtaking.

The hubby and I visited New York this summer and Lady Liberty was one of our first stops. At 130 years old, and standing 22-stories tall, she continues to attract people from all over the world who view her as a light in the darkness, a symbol of freedom, and the best place to buy overpriced ice cream cones and Statue of Liberty back scratchers.

While navigating the crowds on Liberty Island, I learned some things I thought I’d share with you.

1. Selfie sticks need to go. Maybe it’s an evolutionary stage. Maybe in 100 years, our arms will be three feet longer to accommodate our narcissistic self-obsession to document everything we do with a photo. I watched as girls stood in front of Lady Liberty, extended their selfie sticks and took seven or eight dozen pictures, flipping their hair from side to side and making kissy, duck faces at their cameras. By the angle of the phone, I’m sure the statue wasn’t even in the photo.

2. I’m so white. Picture hundreds of people with beautiful

4. Tourists will buy anything. Americans commercialize everything, and Lady Liberty is no exception. If you’re looking for a Statue of Liberty snow-globe, bumper sticker, shot glass, toothbrush, underwear set or decorative clock, a crowded ferry ride to Liberty Island will fulfill all your dreams.

5. She still stands for freedom. At the statue’s right foot, a broken shackle and chain rest on the pedestal, representing freedom from oppression. Through all the shrieking immigration debates, her promise still resonates in the hearts of people all over the world: “Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, the wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door!”

Lady Liberty is a pretty cool old lady. For more than a century she’s welcomed refugees, tourists, immigrants and dignitaries. She’s starred in several movies. She’s inspired poetry, anthems, songs and memes. But her real accomplishment is that whoever visits Liberty Island feels like part of a global family reunion with dozens of languages, cultures and dreams.

3. I’m not good at butting in line. Part of the Statue of Liberty experience was standing in line. For everything. I waited for the restroom, the drinking fountain, the tickets, the ferry and the souvenir Statue of Liberty plastic crowns. But not
