WEST VALLEY TEEN RECOGNIZED FOR HEROIC ACTIONS

S

alvador Colorado walked slowly. It wasn’t until he made eye contact with Sisilia Mila that he realized what was happening.

“I knew that she was in danger because she was scared, I saw her face, her eyes, everything. She was just in panic,” said Salvador, a 15-year-old sophomore at Granger High.

That’s when he snuck up behind the large man who was pointing a knife at Mila. Salvador grabbed the man and slammed him to the ground.

Salvador was recently given a Courageous Citizen Award

by West Valley City in January “for taking quick and heroic actions to help a person in need.”

“It’s good to see and recognize positive things that happen in our community,” Mayor Ron Bigelow said after Salvador was presented a plaque by Police Chief Colleen Jacobs.

Salvador always takes a late night run, but on Sept. 7, he decided to run a different, longer route. He had just slowed down from a sprint when he heard the scream.

“I didn’t know what was going on, but it was like one of those SOS screams,” he said.

He saw two people in a small parking lot at Aspen Village Apartments on 3500 South 3063 West. After Mila caught Salvador’s eye, she quickly looked away. “She didn’t want to startle him, so she was smart in her part,” Salvador said.

Mila had just returned home from visiting her sister. Collecting her things, she climbed out of her car to find a man holding a hunting knife, his face covered with a bandana. The man demanded anything valuable.

Fearing for her life, Mila started screaming.

Those “SOS screams” caught the attention of Salvador, who came over to see what was happening. As he got closer, Salvador saw something shiny, a knife pointed at Mila’s throat. Salvador continued to slowly inch closer to the man to make sure he didn’t hear or see him. After the Granger sophomore threw the man to the ground, he stepped in front of Mila before the man ran off.

Salvador said the situation could have easily escalated with a very different outcome. “I’m just glad that I stopped it.”

After the cops came and left, Salvador and Mila spoke for another hour just talking about life.

“You could tell she was a mother because of the way she was talking to me,” he said. “She just had wise words to say.”

When he finally left to head home, Salvador checked his phone to find 11 missed calls, all from his mother.

Speaking in Spanish, she told the West Valley Journal she was surprised when he told her the story. Her response has been translated.

“I didn’t know this part of him,” she said. “I knew that I have good kids, but I didn’t know this part of him. I feel very proud of them.”

Though Salvador had never done anything like this, it wasn’t out of the ordinary for him.

“I grew up in a very low income neighborhood, I’ve experienced a lot of things with my parents, friends, the neighborhood,” he said. “I’ve never been in a situation like that, but a lot of those things were natural from where I came from.”

He’s also been an athlete his whole life, primarily a soccer player. He credited his many coaches over the years for teaching

him how to remain calm under pressure.

“I kind of panicked,” Salvador said.

“But at the same time tried to keep as calm as I can and just try to process everything that was happening, but quickly so I tried to react as best as I could.”

Salvador, who has two younger sisters and seven older brothers, currently plays with Apex soccer club and is a varsity soccer player at Granger. But that could change next year. He received an offer to go play at the RSL Academy in Herriman. His plan is to begin his junior year there then hopes to go pro straight out of high school.

He still jogs at night. He loves to stay active, but he remains careful, aware of his surroundings. Because that night comes back to him every day.

Whatever route Salvador ends up taking, if it ends up anything like his extended running route on Sept. 7, then he’ll have a lot more people thanking him.

UCT spins a web with ‘timeless’ tale

T

his spider won’t scare you.

“Charlotte’s Web,” the classic children’s story by E. B. White, hit the stage Jan. 18 at the Utah Children’s Theatre (3605 South State Street) for its six-week run through Feb. 23. The show plays on Fridays at 7 p.m. and Saturdays at 1 p.m. and 4:30 p.m.

Directed by Emily Holmgren, the show tells the story of a pig, Wilbur (played by Larissa Anderson), seeking companionship on the farm only to be snubbed by the other barnyard animals. Wilbur eventually befriends a spider, the titular Charlotte (played

by Amanda Van Orden).

“It’s one of those timeless stories about coming together,” said Nellie Kelly, the production and stage manager. “It’s a really easy story for kids to connect to, but also deals with some heavier topics. Because it deals with death a lot, it’s pretty frank about the fact that animals die on farms.”

It’s a show, Kelly said, where kids can feel heavier topics “without being too dramatic or too light about it.”

Last done by UCT about six years ago, the show’s gloomier themes are balanced by its comic elements. Anderson said the script directs her to a variety of emotions from happy to sad to devastated and back again.

“That’s a lot, but my fellow castmates are very focused at moving those emotions along,” she said. “It feels really good.”

The emotion that might resonate most with audiences is Wilbur’s longing for friendship. In a press release, Anderson said she loves how pure the friendship is throughout.

“Wilbur is such a true-hearted pig,” she said. “The show is all about Wilbur’s friends and how he is loyal and true-hearted.”

The show aims to capture the two sides of friendship. “This story is about the circle of life and self-sacrificing friendship,”

Holmgren said in a press release. “Relationships bring the greatest sorrow and the greatest joy.”

Contrasting the animals with the humans could provide the most comedy of the show.

“I’ve laughed so hard putting the show together,” Holmgren said in the press release.

“The audience will laugh and cry. Because they are encouraged to laugh and have fun with the characters, when one dies it sends a pang to the heart because they loved them.

It’s sad, but beautiful.”

Differentiating the actors playing humans from those playing animals may have been the biggest challenge. But it was something the cast and crew were ready for.

Animal costumes were patterned after classic clowns. Wilbur wears a hula hoop while geese have fake heads with eyeballs above their heads requiring actors to mimic where the eyes are looking despite not being their own, according to Kelly.

Set design and costumes are among the items the cast and crew are enthusiastic about.

Anderson was excited for the audience to see Charlotte’s actual web in action.

“That’s always just a magical thing in my mind,” she said.

But it’s what comes before the show that excites Kelly.

A preshow will be held for kids with games from a relay race to guessing the sound of a farm animal involving the actors.

That interaction between actors and audience continues into the play as characters will speak to the audience such as when the web first appears.

“It’s really cool that way, they’re very interactive,” Kelly said.

The cast ranges from 8 to middle aged and the show features many family units.

Holmgren’s husband plays Homer while two of her daughters and a son also feature in the play. Two other mother-daughter duos are part of the show, with one working backstage doing makeup.

Especially with rehearsals running through the holidays, it’s nice for families to perform together, Kelly said.

“It was really cool because we always try to fit that in, not purposefully, but it’s kind of nice whenever our shows end up having family units in them,” she said. “Because it’s a lot of time away from your family when you’re doing theater.”

For the Utah Children’s Theatre, Kelly said this show caters just as much to the younger audience as the older generation.

“The 4 year old will enjoy it as much as the 82 year old.”

Women freeride and unite at ski resort

Backcountry.com hosted a Women’s Ride Day at Brighton Resort on Jan. 10. It was open to women of any skill level who registered. It was a day of snowboarding, complimentary barbecue, adventure films and a chance to ride top-of the-line winter gear. Dinner and drinks were “on the house” for ladies who met at Milly Express lift for the meetup.

Backcountry.com is an online retailer that was formed by two guys in a Park City garage with a business dream. Since 1996, they sell specialty gear and clothing for a wide range of outdoor mountain sports.

To start the 2019 year with style and ambition, Backcountry partnered with the Women’s Leadership Coalition to sponsor this relaxing day. It was for gathering women to shred up some sweet “gnar-pow” together (that’s old school for “gnarly powder man!”).

Though after this event, gnar-pow is obviously a gender non-specific term.

The point of the event was to inspire women who want to hit the slopes, to meet other women and try out the latest gear. Doing this can help women network and feel empowered in a male dominated sport. Marga Franklin, visual merchandising manager for Backcountry explained, “Our goal is to get people out there on the snow… sharing with other people who might be intimidated, but want to try. We have all the gear so they can come out.”

Brighton chefs served the ladies a hearty dinner of barbecued pork sandwiches and more.

It was a tasty meal to replenish energy for taking more runs into the night. What’s not to enjoy, when there is good female company, food and snowboarding films starring talented women?

Myllissa Pinchem attended. “I love how inviting everything has been. Coming out here today, everybody has been so welcoming. I’m a beginner and everyone was super nice letting us demo the boards. Having the opportunity like this and having other women that share the same passion is really awesome,” she said.

Backcountry recognizes that women can benefit by meeting together in an adventure setting. The attendees agreed that women doing sports together is important.

When businesses give back by promoting core passions, with women celebrated as a part of it, it sends a positive message. It is a message (for women who already love the outdoors) to feel equal in sports. It’s also a message to encourage women who are on the fence about trying new things.

Nirvana Ortanez, a professional snowboarder, was there. “Look up events like this and just come. It’s the best way to get intimidation out of the way. We take time out of our schedules and travels to be here at these events, to really encourage women who might be intimidated,” she said. Ortanez has

been highlighted in TransWorld Snowboarding as a woman with some serious commitment and skill.

Women are also popping out of the woodwork, with talent for filming and photography in snowboarding. Gill Montgomery, a freelance photographer, knew about the event because she shoots professional snowboarders and lives in the area.

“Whenever there is a female event, I’m all about it,” Montgomery said. “It’s great because there are so many girls in the industry that never really get together. Events like this show girls, even younger girls (and girls not as confident in snowboarding), that there is a community — that we are very welcoming; that you can reach out and go to events like this and be comfortable and accepted.”

When it comes to getting more involved in sports like snowboarding, Montgomery related, “It always seems kind of intimidating, especially as a female (you’re constantly second guessing yourself). You just need to find a group that you can ride with, and there really are other girls to shred with. Go out and get involved.” She recommended visiting a local ski shop for info, and paying attention to upcoming events.

Citizens Academy provides police perspective

“I think they’ll be able to look at things that come out in the media and they won’t just get a one-sided thought on it,” he said.

“That they’ll look at more of a bigger picture and make their own decision that can understand why that happened the way it did.”

MacPherson would forward the recommendation to other residents.

“It was one of the best experiences I’ve had,” she said. “I learned a lot, had a ton of fun and I think everybody should go.”

I

t was last fall and a man was beating on a vending machine when Nicole MacPherson and her partner arrived. Wearing the full police belt, she turned the corner and he immediately came at her with a knife.

“I managed to draw my weapon and couldn’t bring myself to fire,” she said. “So my partner and I both died.”

MacPherson was describing a training scenario during last fall’s Citizens Academy, the second such program put on by the West Valley City Police Department. A third will begin sometime this spring.

The academy is a 10-week program giv-

ing residents a chance to get a real working knowledge of the police department through classroom discussions and hands-on training scenarios.

Lt. Jeff Conger coordinated the academy, providing instruction on investigations, policies, and how they handle officer involved critical incidents. “(In 10 weeks) we covered the most important aspects that we wanted to share with the community to help them understand what we’re doing,” he said.

Conger brought in other experts to work with residents, such as forensics and the fire

department.

Conger said the academy — Conger’s first, the department held its first academy in spring/summer 2018 — exceeded his expectations due to the help from other departments.

Participants got in-person demonstrations and experience. That included emergency vehicle operations demonstrating how officers train to drive safely in emergency situations. They also had a day at the shooting range as well as demonstrations from the SWAT team and K9 unit.

“Some residents actually got to wear a bite sleeve and take a bite from a dog which is pretty cool,” Conger said.

They also had specific scenarios, such as MacPherson’s experience at the vending machine.

Another scenario, she said, was a man at 7-11 yelling at someone. When they walk in, the man turns and pulls a phone at them to show a situation where police aren’t sure what they’re holding.

“It felt very real,” MacPherson said of the scenario training. “You kind of understand better what (police are) thinking and what they go through.”

MacPherson’s husband completed the first academy last spring and she applied for the academy after his recommendation.

“I love our police department. I just have a great amount of respect for them and I wanted to come be more involved and show them my support,” she said.

Some of the common symptoms that bring people to Dr. Hendricks’s office are back pain, hip pain, neck pain and headaches. He is serious about getting to the bottom of what’s causing the pain.

“The spine is so important in terms of overall body function. A lot of pain can be relieved by manipulating the spine. With headaches there is often a neck tension component, even in migraines. Our adjustments can release the tension and send the message to the brain to relieve the pain,” Dr. Hendricks said.

During the initial consultation, Dr. Hendricks helps patients come up with a care plan.

If additional diagnostics such as ultrasound or radiology are suggested, Dr. Hendricks will give

his patients a referral to a trusted outside source.

“Sometimes the pain is minor and there is a quick fix. I enjoy focusing on patient care and spending the time to figure out what’s wrong. We want to find the proper adjustment to help people get better. And once they feel better, we want to help them stay that way,” said Dr. Hendricks.

The Joint Cottonwood doesn’t go through insurance companies, and they accept FSA and HAS payments. “We have a wellness plan where patients can get four adjustments per month for $69. That really makes it affordable when you break it down by visit. We really aim to be a model that is convenient and affordable,” said Dr. Hendricks.

Bus rapid transit project connecting Murray, Taylorsville and West Valley remains on schedule

etween I-15, the westside belt route, Bangerter Highway and the Mountain View Corridor, commuters in the southwest part of the Salt Lake Valley can normally find a relatively pain-free way to move north and south.

But ahhhh… the never-ending dilemma of the east-west commute lingers on.

On 5400 South through Taylorsville the solution was to install red and green lane signs that make every day feel like Christmas for drivers.

And for a full decade now, the problem has been considered, debated and addressed for improving 4500-4700 South travel.

“Work first began to address this travel problem across the valley along 4700 South back in 2009,” said Loretta Markham with Jacobs, a consulting firm on the project.

“Back then, a light rail spur was still being considered. But through years of analysis, it was determined a bus rapid transit project would be more effective at connecting people to other midvalley mass transit systems.”

At their first meeting of 2019, Taylorsville City Council members heard a detailed update on the Midvalley Connector Bus Rapid Transit project from Markham, who is the Jacobs consultant team project manager.

“My guess is the bulk of the construction work will occur in 2021,” she told the elected officials. “Under the current timeline, final design of the project will occur this year, with property acquisition after that. There are 30 partial land acquisitions required. But most of those are just little slivers of land, which should not take as long to acquire.”

who will be displaced by the project reside in two aging apartment buildings between 4700 South and Salt Lake Community College: Casa Linda Apartments.

“The city purchased Casa Linda Apartments as right of way acquisition,” City Councilman Brad Christopherson said in a text. “The state allocated some funds several years ago. A couple of the Casa Linda buildings have already been torn down.”

Christopherson also added, the city was aware of an asbestos issue in the buildings at the time of the purchase. Taylorsville will be responsible for the hazardous waste cleanup if there is any. But because the still standing buildings were constructed more recent-

ly than those that have already been torn down, the council is hopeful asbestos will not be found when the current structures are removed.

Effectively, the Midvalley Connector Bus Rapid Transit line will link Murray’s Intermountain Medical Center to West Valley City Hall. A new transit hub will be constructed at Salt Lake Community College, the primary reason why the apartments must go. And 15 bus stations will be constructed along the route.

“They are not like standard Utah Transit Authority bus stops, which are often just a pole in the sidewalk,” Markham said.

“These stations will be covered, include

benches and a kiosk for purchasing bus tickets.”

Several of the stations will be built in the middle of 4500-4700 South.

The bus route will proceed west on 4700 South before turning north on 2700 West to end in West Valley, west of Valley Fair Mall.

“This route will connect commuters with TRAX lines and many other mass transit options,” said Lynda Jensen, with Forsgren Associates, Inc. Essentially, she is Taylorsville’s contracted city engineer on the project. “There are so many office buildings along this route; it should help a lot of people to be able to leave their cars at home when they go to work.”

The $40 million cost of the BRT project includes the purchase of eight deluxe, high-capacity busses, at an estimated cost of $1 million each.

During her presentation to the Taylorsville City Council, Markham also asked the body to sign a formal resolution in support of the BRT plan. At press deadline, council members had verbally committed to do so and encouraged Markham to offer their resolution as a template, as she seeks similar notices of support from the Murray and West Valley City Councils.

“I have worked with a lot of cities on a lot of projects,” Markham concluded.

“Taylorsville’s vision and support to see this through – for 10 years now – has been as impressive as any municipal work I have seen.

Even through various city administrations, their commitment to improving mass transit through Taylorsville has never wavered.”

tially hesitant in spending that much money when there were other priorities in the city.

Design for the sculptures feature nine double helixes (Decker Lake Drive) and seven double spinners (I-215 off ramp).

While Kuwang Plaza will have three desert palms.

The helixes and spinners will have offsetting heights with the tallest reaching just over 23 feet. The desert palms max out at 13 feet.

Retention top priority for fire, police departments

New upgrades coming to Centennial Park

oth public safety chiefs told the West Valley City Council on Jan. 8 that their top priority is recruiting and retaining personnel.

“We’ve got dedicated people,” Fire Chief John Evans told the council during its work meeting. “My priority is to keep the dedicated people that we have.”

The priorities came to light during the departments’ year-end presentations to the council. Every department presents an accounting on how the previous year went and shares what their primary focuses are going forward. All departments present prior to the council’s strategic planning meeting when councilmembers direct city staff where to concentrate their efforts.

Two of the final presentations came from the fire and police departments. Evans said he’s lost experienced firefighters to other agencies because they’re being offered better wages. He wants to become more competitive with other departments along the Wasatch Front.

“I wish I could figure out a way to replace experience but I can’t,” Evans said.

Police Chief Colleen Jacobs faces a similar problem. In 2018, the police department hired 41 new employees (seven civilian and

34 sworn officers), but lost 31. Reasons for leaving included retirement (seven), left for different police agency (13) and 11 for personal reasons.

When Councilmember Don Christensen said he was worried about the turnover rate, Jacobs immediately responded, “So am I.” She said the department is young and inexperienced with almost 120 officers with less than five years of experience. Many of the departments officers have only held their current rank, whether sergeant or lieutenant, for less than five years as well. Forty-five percent of the patrol division have less than one year on the job.

“To have police services fast and to have them good, we need experienced police officers,” Jacobs told the council, later saying they’re struggling to replace the experienced officers who leave.

Those experienced officers typically have 5-10 years on the job. “They learn what they’re doing and then leave for someone else,” she said.

It’s an issue confronting many cities, and city administration is looking at ways to retain officers with more than five years experience, said Paul Isaac, assistant city manager.

The basketball courts, all of which are over 18 years old, will be repaired and resurfaced, while the four tennis courts on the east side will be converted to 12 pickleball courts.

Golf carts at Stonebridge Golf Club and The Ridge Golf Club will soon have GPS systems. A five-year lease contract was set up for both golf courses with Intermountain Golf Cars Inc. City officials said it should have a high return on investment. A golf cart was once stolen and found in a nearby neighborhood.

The new carts give them the capacity to shut them down. They also expect, as a new amenity, to bring in more golfers.

The Ridge Golf Club will host the 5A state girls golf championship this spring.

Residents will see a few new upgrades at Centennial Park (5405 West 3100 S.) in 2019.

In December, the West Valley City Council unanimously approved a few changes to the city’s largest park.

First, a new sign will be built along 5600 West near the entrance to Centennial Park.

The approximately 17-foot electronic sign will display messages advertising events, leagues and activities.

A backlit sign will be mounted on the wall of the Family Fitness Center along 3100 South. City officials said people often drive on 3100 South not realizing which building is the fitness center.

The total cost will be $54,520, with $42,753 from impact fees going to the 5600 West sign and $11,767 from the Family Fitness Center budget going to the 3100 South sign.

A double face monument sign will be made of concrete with beveled corners, a 7x10 electronic sign and a 7x8 Corten steel (also known as weathering steel) plate with the park name. YESCO won the bid to build the signs.

Second, the basketball and tennis courts at the 77-acre park can expect a change.

Teams ready for realignment in 2019

Hunter and Granger high schools will continue their rivalry in the region alignments that begin this fall.

I

n December the Utah High School Activities Association released its final determination for region alignments for the upcoming school year.

“The new region alignment for 2019-20 is the best representation for my school that I’ve seen since I’ve been coaching,” Hunter High School soccer coach Bret Solberg said.

“These schools are all quite similar to each other and that leads to fair competition.”

The realignment committee consisted of 16 members, including an athletic director, a representative from each classification in the state, a private school, charter school and six board of trustee members. The committee received current enrollment numbers on Oct. 1

and arranged each school into six classifications.

The committee delivered a first consideration in October for schools to evaluate.

Kearns and Granger were considered bubble schools in the 6A classification. Bubble schools were allowed to argue which of two classifications they could join. After consideration they choose to stay in 6A with schools in their area.

“A few years ago Granger, Hunter and West were in a region with Davis County schools and that was hard because we were not similar to them,” Solberg said.

The 2019 alignment for Region 2 will include Cyprus, Granger, Hunter, Kearns,

Taylorsville and West Jordan. These school will compete in this region for two years. All but one of the schools (West Jordan) is in the Granite School District.

“I do feel like we have been treated fairly,” Taylorsville athletic director Guy Mackay said. “Being an only school in your district in a region is hard, but us being back with schools with similar demographics is good.

As far as competitiveness goes it will be good. We are back with some of our natural rivals.”

The UHSAA oversees 109 state championships over 10 boys and 10 girls sanctioned sports. Executive director Rob Cuff emphasized the importance of balance in its regions.

“We wanted more like schools in each region,” Cuff said in an open meeting about alignment. “It minimizes risk especially in football. Some say it is watered down, but now we have similar schools playing each other. There is not a big difference in school size.”

The committee uses two factors in its decisions, enrollment and free lunch applications. Cuff explained they look for things that can be measured to make alignment decisions.

“There are 51 different high school associations around the country and there are

51 different ways to work this out. There are states that use the success factor in determining regions. We have not felt that is the way we want to do it yet. Some want it that way, others don’t. I have heard mixed feelings on some of our regions like Region 2, but we feel this is a group of like schools and it may not be the strongest, but it is competitive,” Cuff said.

Some have argued that the qualifications for state tournaments should be changed to allow more competitive teams into the state playoffs.

“I think it is unfair that some better teams sit at home during playoff time,” Herriman head boys basketball coach Scott Briggs said.

“Maybe the region champions should get a bye into the tournament and then the lower place teams play into the tournament. I am not sure how to do it, but we need to look at it.”

There is a motion for the UHSAA to analyze its playoff formats. Currently, the top four teams in each region qualify for the state tournament. In 2019, Region 1 will have eight schools whereas the other three regions in the 6A classification each have only six.

The UHSAA is scheduled to analyze the enrollment and realign its members in 2021.

Students create Mustang Media for West Lake STEM Junior High

W

atch any episode of Mustang Media at West Lake STEM Junior High and you’ll know the students work hard to make this an engaging show for their peers, parents and teachers. Each episode starts with a welcome and tells what week it is, followed by The Pledge of Allegiance and the events for the week.

Tyler Howe, principal of West Lake STEM Junior High, is proud of his school and students.

“West Lake was starting a new chapter in its rich history as the first junior high STEM school in Granite School District.

This included a remodel of the building and many new teachers and students to the school. With the start of this new chapter,

we felt it very appropriate to have a highly dynamic communication medium that could be shared with teachers, students, and parents via all possible social media channels. Mustang Media was born,” Howe said.

Mustang Media launched in August 2015 and just celebrated its 100th episode. It is aired every week during the school year.

“Mustang Media drives the culture of the school,” Howe said. “Teachers and students get a chance to see many of the other instructional practices and activities taking place throughout the building on a weekly basis.”

“In a profession that trends to teacher or classroom isolation, this is essential,” he continued. “By being able to see the best of what

we are capable of on a regular basis, a new standard is established. Teachers, students, and parents consistently live up to and surpass that standard, establishing a new standard. It becomes an endless cycle of pushing the boundaries of our individual personal best. The show is meant to be informational, inspirational, humorous, student-driven, and plain fun.”

Both teachers and students work together to pick the topics that will be on the show.

The principal writes a general script of what needs to be addressed each week, but the students execute and expand upon that script.

Howe said, “The anchors and editors of Mustang Media are our student body officers.

However, most students make it on Mustang Media at least a few times each year. Students are constantly being interviewed in the lunchroom or being highlighted with their learning activities in the classroom.”

All students involved with Mustang Media take turns with each role. Some students man the camera, act as anchors, edit the footage, and so forth.

Mabel Suarez, an eighth-grader attending West Lake, has been doing Mustang Media for two years. “It is such a great experience. My favorite thing about being on Mustang Media is that many people know

me because they have seen me on Mustang Media, and will allow me to meet other great students that are at my school. Also, being on Mustang Media helps me to increase my knowledge about being on camera and being social around others,” Mabel said.

Howe said he has seen many positive impacts from the show being on air.

“Students seem to engage more into what is celebrated on Mustang Media. They love being highlighted or featured on the show, so we get more and more positive performances (academic and other) from our students because that is what’s featured on Mustang Media,” Howe said.

Mabel treats her role seriously, recognizing what it does for the student body.

“When being a part of Mustang Media there are standards that have to be met, and it is important for us to meet the standard that our advisors have set for us, because being the person that informs other students about important information is very motivating for us to know that we have students who count on us for information that they may need,” Mabel says.

ontention amongst the teams in Region 2 for its girls basketball crown is heated, competitive and sometimes bruising.

Hunter High School head coach Cameron Gardner has high expectations for this year’s team.

“We have been up and down,” Gardner said. “We have had some good games and some bad games so far this season. We just need to be able to put a full game together.”

Gardner has been at the school for three seasons. His first summer conditioning camp he had only a handful of girls participate. He now has a team that could contend for a region title.

“From the time that I have been here we have progressively gotten better each season. We only have ourselves to trip us up from here on out,” Gardner said.

Gardner was hired in 2016 and the team only won two region games. In 2017 they won four and this season they have split their four games so far (2-2).

The team is in for some tough competition in Region 2. On Jan. 8 they faced crosstown rival Granger for the first time this year. It was a bruising contest. The teams shot combined 43 free throws. Hunter led at halftime 26-22, but the Lancers mounted a furious comeback in the fourth quarter for the 55-41 victory.

“Region 2 is going to be like that. Every game is going to be a battle. No one is going to show up and be the clear or dominant team. Region 2 is going to be a struggle. We will certainly not give up. It is someone dif-

ferent every night for us. It is a great thing to have. We don’t need to rely on one player all of the time, but some nights like against Granger we can’t get it done,” Gardner said.

The Lancers outscored the Wolverines by 16 points in the fourth quarter. Despite the fourth quarter meltdown seven players scored on the night, led by Teya Gasu’s 11 and Bianca Cuevas’ 10.

Junior Angel Lui leads the team in scoring averaging 12.3 points per game. Justine Aiono is the team’s leading rebounder with 4.5 per game.

In Region 2 basketball the teams all play each other three times. They are scheduled to play Granger again Friday Jan. 25 and Feb 12. The games remaining against Cyprus could be equally important (Jan. 15 and Feb. 1).

“Good thing about playing each team three times is that we have all of our goals in front of us still,” Gardner said.

The Utah High School Activities Association state basketball tournament is scheduled to begin Feb. 18 at Salt Lake Community College in Taylorsville.

Gardner is in his third season as Wolverines head coach. He graduated from Utah State University where he was a walk-on basketball player. He graduated high school from Box Elder.

“I love these girls to death. They work their butts off. They are just a little ways from being a great team. I am excited and hope we get there. I would not want to be anywhere else,” he said.

o you know what to do when you come across someone who is bleeding, perhaps wounded in a car crash or shooting incident? Severe bleeding can cause shock or death within five to 10 minutes, before medical help arrives. Knowing how to stop

the bleeding can mean survival for those involved.

After the Jan. 13 gang-related shooting at Fashion Place Mall in Murray, Intermountain Healthcare issued the following statement: “…(the) shooting at Fashion

Place Mall is a valuable reminder that everyone should know how to Stop the Bleed.”

Intermountain Medical Center is offering just this kind of training to the public in a program developed by the Department of Homeland Security’s Stop the Bleeding Coalition.

“The Stop the Bleeding Coalition is focused on raising awareness of how, with the proper training and materials, death from bleeding can be prevented. Simple measures can save many lives,” according to IHC’s press release. “Uncontrolled bleeding is the number one cause of death after a mass shooting and similar mass casualty events.”

Stop the Bleed training materials state, “No matter how rapid the arrival of professional emergency responders, bystanders will always be first on the scene. A person who is bleeding can die from blood loss within five minutes, therefore it is important to quickly stop the blood loss. Those nearest to someone with a life-threatening injury are best positioned to provide first care.”

In emergency situations, the Federal Emergency Management Agency advises that you first call 9-1-1, then protect the injured from harm. Stop the bleeding, then position the injured so they can breathe. Stay close to provide them with comfort.

“Approximately 40 percent of trauma-related deaths worldwide are due to bleeding or its consequences, establishing hemorrhage as the most common cause of preventable death in trauma,” according to IHC. That’s why trauma experts from the Intermountain Medical Center Trauma Program in Murray say Stop the Bleed is a national awareness campaign and call-to-action. Stop the Bleed is intended to cultivate grassroots efforts that encourage bystanders

to become trained, equipped, and empowered to help in a bleeding emergency before professional help arrives.

Bystanders at Fashion Place Mall were able to apply dressings and tourniquets to the wounded before paramedics arrived.

The quick thinking of these responders was hailed as critical in helping the wounded survive.

Dr. Mark Stevens, a Level 1 trauma surgeon at Intermountain Medical Center, said, “We recommend placement of tourniquets only when there’s life-threatening bleeding that can’t be stopped by direct pressure. I don’t think either of the injured was hurt by placing the tourniquets, but they probably weren’t necessary in this situation.”

Stop the Bleed courses, such as the one that IMC offers, recommend that you first find the source of bleeding. If you have something to put in between the blood and your hands, like gloves, a cloth, or a plastic bag, use it. Apply firm, steady pressure directly on the source of the bleeding. Push hard to stop or slow bleeding, even if it is painful to the injured. Keep applying pressure until emergency medical services arrive. A tourniquet should be used when the injury is to an arm or leg and/or the bleeding is so severe it cannot be controlled otherwise.

Those interested in getting trained can attend a free hour-long Stop the Bleed course offered by IMC. The Draper Fire Department also offers a Stop the Bleed course.

A New Year to focus on issues important to you

“To Strengthen and Promote the Shared Interests of the Business Community”

W

e’re well into the new year, and that means new opportunities to tackle some of the most pressing challenges facing our community. In January I was also sworn in to serve another term representing you on the Salt Lake County Council. Thanks to those of you who supported my re-election.

To those who did not, please know that I take the charge to represent ALL my constituents very seriously, whether you voted for me or not. Please don’t ever hesitate to reach out if you need anything.

I commit to being accessible and responsive to my constituents, and to bringing renewed vigor to the great tasks ahead of us as a community. For the coming term, as well as this legislative session, here are some of the key issues I’ll be focusing on.

I’ve fought for our trails and open space, and I’m pleased to see added resources for the gem of the west side: the Jordan River Trail. As I represent the county on the Jordan River Commission, I’ve had opportunities to support additional trails, a bike rental program, and added law enforcement along the river. I will continue to push for additional resources, because we need to keep this a fun and safe place for people and families to recreate.

I also serve as a board member for Prevent Child Abuse Utah, and I’m a big proponent of education in our schools on this important topic. One in five kids in Utah will be sexually abused before age 18, and I’m determined to reduce this startling statistic.

I’m eager to see continued work at the state level for mental health crisis resources. Suicide is the most preventable cause of death, and I’ll be particularly interested to support legislation or county initiatives that can help curb this epidemic. As I serve on the state’s mental health crisis commission, I will

continue to push for things like more mental health counselors in schools and receiving centers in the valley.

I also chair the county’s intergenerational poverty task force, where we’ve been collaborating with local leaders in human services, education, mental health, and local and state government to improve resources for impoverished families and remove any barriers to their success. Any legislation that supports families stuck in a cycle of poverty, in a fiscally responsible way, ought to be supported.

We also need to keep the momentum strong on criminal justice reform, through improved substance abuse treatment programs and enhanced mental health tools in the community, so that those incarcerated don’t become repeat offenders. This, while still providing sufficient jail bed space to enable police to do their jobs, is vital. A safe community is my top priority.

Another pressing issue that’s top of mind this time of year is our air quality. For the quality of life as well as overall health, increasingly working to curb emissions is something we can all get behind. Sensible government policy ought to be part of the equation, but all of us can do our part today by being more mindful of how much we drive and seeking to reduce trips.

All of these issues, and many more, are intrinsically tied to the current and future success of our county and our state. I’m optimistic about the future of Salt Lake County and Utah because I’ve seen the goodness in our people, the strength of our economy, and the courage in our hearts to work even harder to build a bright future for our kids. Thanks for putting your trust in me to serve you once again!

To communicate with state legislators, many cities turn to professional lobbyists for help. (Pixabay)

When a bill is approved in the Utah State Capitol, the consequences can be cascading and far reaching. The Utah State General Legislative session runs from Jan. 28 to Mar. 14.

During that time, there may be a bill that can negatively affect a city, financially and systematically.

For cities to keep up with the thousand-plus bills during a session, there must be some communication with legislators. City governments must make their own effort; there is no official meeting with state and city leaders. And with government officials constantly changing with each election, relationships can be difficult to maintain.

One resource some cities turn to is lobbyists.

A lobbyist means “an individual who is employed by a principal; or an individual who contracts for economic consideration, other than reimbursement for reasonable travel expenses, with a principal to lobby a public official.” (Utah State Code Chapter 11) Lobbying is defined as “communicating with a public official for the purpose of influencing the passage, defeat, amendment, or postponement of legislative or executive action.” (Utah State Code Chapter 11) There are strict rules in state code that dictate exactly how a lobbyist behaves with government officials, down to the size of font on their name tags.

Most importantly is the required full disclosure of expenditures to government officials. Lobbyists are required to submit these disclosures to the state at the end of every quarter. This disclosure includes when, why, where and how the money was spent on an official, whether it be travel, lodging or food (above the value of $10).

A professional lobbying firm, Foxley & Pignanelli, is employed by West Jordan City.

Renae Cowley, associate lobbyist for Foxley & Pignanelli, explained that a lobbyist is not as much an influence but an informer.

“We present lawmakers with facts and data that inform them of the broader scopes

and impact of the laws that they are passing,” Cowley said. “A lot of times, they are unaware of these unintended consequences. At the end of the day, we don’t have a vote.”

For example, in 2017, Operation Rio Grande was implemented that cleared Union Station of homeless individuals. Many moved to areas around the Jordan River. While there were other initiatives to help find housing for the homeless, it is not a problem solved. Now the cities along the Jordan River are responsible for the homeless but were not given any additional police resources or funding. It is now up to those cities to come up with the resources.

This is particularly a problem in West Jordan, a city that does not have a homeless shelter. Councilmember Alan Anderson described how this is a financial issue for the city and part of the motivation for their property tax increase.

“We get the added crime for moving the Rio Grande, and we have to pay [West Valley and South Salt Lake] with homeless shelters with [sales tax] that we collect, which is how we’re funding police and fire,” Anderson said.

“We have to make adjustments because the legislature changes things.”

Having a knowledgeable voice to communicate these types of issues can make a big difference to a city. Lobbyists maintain professional relationships that may be difficult for individual cities to maintain while taking care of internal city needs.

West Jordan Mayor Jim Riding explained his endorsement of lobbyists. “You get someone who’s elected, and he may have been a CEO of a tech company or a shoe salesman,” Riding said. “But now he’s going to go up and lobby, when the lobbyists are the ones that have the background and experience and know the people.”

For West Jordan, lobbyists efforts have been fruitful.

West Jordan, a city trying to boost its economic base, has been unable to invite a new car dealership. Businesses are required to pay

full value on property (residents pay 40 percent) and car dealerships can significantly lift city budgets. State code prohibited similar car dealerships from being closer than 20 miles to another, and because of existing dealerships in neighboring cities, West Jordan was unable to invite a car dealership into their city limits.

Lobbyists Foxley & Pignanelli were tasked with addressing this issue. “[West Jordan City Council] hired lobbyists to shrink the size of the circumference of the restriction that existed for a new car dealership,” said West Jordan City Manager David Brickey. “It used to be 20 miles, and they were able to cut it in half down to 10. For the first time since that enactment of law and its restriction, West Jordan could now be the home of a new car dealership.”

Other cities choose to send their own leaders, rather than professional lobbyists. In recent years, Sandy City employed many professionals. But, when Mayor Kurt Bradburn was elected, he decreased the number of paid lobbyists and gave much of that responsibility to his deputy mayor, Evelyn Everton.

“Having me here full time made it so that we didn’t need so many contract lobbyists,” Everton said. “We picked the best of the best that we had. Some of our lobbyists are focused on water issues, some of them are focused on securing state funding for infrastructure, and some are kind of catch-all and helping to advocate for the city.”

Everton explained the need that Sandy sees in lobbying with the state legislature.

“These legislators are going to see about 1,000 bills over 45 days,” she said. “There is no possible way for them to know everything about every bill. A lobbyist’s job is to really understand how this legislation does affect certain industries and how it affects our city.

That can be anything from how it affects our watershed, how it affects our tax dollars, how it affects our infrastructure or how it will affect our fire and police department.”

Though lobbyists are a useful and loud voice on Capitol Hill, they are not the only voice, nor are they the loudest.

“When paid lobbyists go up against a group of highly organized citizens, we lose every single time,” Cowley said. “Politics is for those who show up. Private citizens speaking on their own behalf for their own behalf are far more powerful than the paid lobbyists.”

Unite for Holladay is one such example of a loud public voice that overruled the voices of developers and government. In Holladay, there was a development on the table for construction on the old Cottonwood Mall site. The majority of the community opposed the development with 57 percent of voters rejecting the development.

Paul Baker, founder of Unite for Holladay was amazed and proud of his city for vocalizing their opinion. “In lobbying, there is no substitute to a well-informed and mobilized populous,” Baker said. “But having a well-informed citizens majority is unique and requires three ingredients: a lack of listening, passionate citizens, and really poor policy.”

You were just in a car accident, now what?

U

nless you’re one of the few anomalies in the world, we’ve all been in an accident. We’ve experienced that sickening feeling when your car makes unwanted contact with another vehicle. We’re frustrated and disheartened.

While we may want to crawl into a hole, we can’t. There are things to do and we’ve given you 10 to be aware of (in no particular order).

1. Have an emergency kit in your car. While this step comes before the accident occurs, it’s essential to be prepared.

Whatever you kit entails, make sure it has a first-aid kit, flashlight, reflective triangles and a small (and simple) camera in case there’s been damage to your phone. We’re typically frustrated or frazzled after an accident and not inclined to rational thinking. Being prepared limits the possibility of forgetfulness.

2. Take a deep breath. Accidents are traumatic experiences. Taking a breath will shift focus from what just happened to what needs to be done next.

3. Get a status check on everyone in the car. Check with each passenger to see if they are OK. Have someone call 911 immediately if someone is injured or unresponsive.

4. Move to a safe location. Most insurance companies recommend relocating the vehicle to the sidewalk or shoulder of the road as soon as possible after the accident. If

the damage to the car is minor, this should be relatively easy. But if there are major injuries or questions about the safety of the car, leave it where it is, even if its blocking traffic.

5. Increase your visibility. Turn on your hazard lights and set out your attention items from the emergency kit—flares, orange cones, reflective triangles, etc. One accident should not lead to another. Take precaution to ensure other drivers on the road remain safe.

6. Stay calm. It is very easy to lose your temper in this situation, it’s human nature. Keeping your cool will keep the situation from getting worse. If it wasn’t your fault, it’s easy to want to let your emotions loose on the other driver. This will cloud your judgment and may lead to something that does not help the situation. You still need to exchange information.

7. Exchange insurance information.

This is imperative. If you are to file a claim on your car, you will need the other driver’s information. Most likely, after an accident you are feeling jumpy or stressed. It means when you try to write down their information your handwriting will look like ancient hieroglyphics and, unless you are a cryptographer, will be unable to read it later. We live in the 21st century, take a photo of their information and take photos of the damage done to both cars.

8. Don’t admit guilt. Every insurance

company will tell you to do this. Even if you are at fault and it was you to blame. This could drive your premium up or even lead to you being sued. Let the police and insurance companies determine this.

9. Call the police. While some minor accidents don’t require a report to be filed, it’s up to the discretion of the drivers in the accident to call the police. Law enforcement can take statements, get information on injuries and property damage. Be sure to ask for a copy of the accident report. If there is a dispute, the officer will be an important testimony.

10. See a doctor. Depending on the in-

juries suffered or not, it is easy to skip this.

A large financial situation has just happened with the car accident, you don’t want another one by seeing the doctor and jacking up your health costs. It’s important to consider it, or possibly speak with one. Adrenaline can be pumping after the accident and one might not notice the amount of whiplash to your neck.

Symptoms can take 24 hours to appear. The warning signs include neck pain, stiffness, loss of motion in the neck, headaches, fatigue, dizziness and pain in the shoulders or upper back. It can be better to be safe than sorry. l

ver wonder what the best bang for your buck is at the coffee shop? Let’s take a journey through my years working as a barista at local and corporate coffee shops.

As a customer, you have all sorts of options to get your caffeine fix: drip coffee, espresso drinks, teas, iced blended drinks, cold brews, etc. Let’s focus on drip coffee.

Drip is a coffee shop’s equivalent to what you make at home in your coffee pot, just on an industrial scale. We’ll grind the beans, measure out the correct amount, throw that in a filter, make sure the brewer is set to pour the correct amount of water, and hit a “brew” button. If you’re looking for something simple, drip coffee is the best deal at any coffee shop.

Depending on the size, and if you’re going to use your own cup, drip coffee is priced anywhere from $2 to $4. Or, if you plan to hang out, most shops will offer “to stay” refills for a reduced price.

However, most of us don’t want to get plain drip coffee when we visit a coffee shop.

Usually, we desire something fancier, something with espresso. The options for espresso drinks are vast: doppios, lattes, flavored lattes, cappuccinos, Americanos, cortados, macchiatos, mochas, flat whites, dirty chai lattes, blended drinks and signature drinks.

Instead of detailing every one of those, I suggest focusing on the most important factor for making your important morning decision:

the ratio of the amount of espresso to the amount of product. Depending on your taste buds, some drinks might suit your wallet better than others. For example, the espresso quantity in a latte and a mocha are equivalent, but there can be as much as a $1 difference between the drinks. For chocolate lovers out there, it’s worth it to get the mocha. But for customers focused primarily on caffeine, a latte would be the way to go.

For espresso drinks, one of the main considerations is size. If there are three size options for a single drink, it’s important to ask how many shots are going in each size.

At a popular corporate coffee shop, there are three size options for espresso drinks — the equivalent of a small, medium and large.

Here’s the big secret: there’s generally the same amount of espresso in a medium and a large. The difference comes down to the other products: milk, flavoring, water, concentrate, tea. Anytime I visit a coffee shop, I always order the equivalent of a medium, because there are more espresso shots than a small, but less product to dilute the espresso (and add more calories) than a large.

Subbing is a secret trick. Many coffee shops will charge 50 to 75 cents for extra shots, additional flavorings, or a milk substitution. If you order something like a vanilla hazelnut latte with coconut milk and an extra shot, you’ve just added $2 to your

drink price. Instead, you might want to find a drink on the menu that already has coconut milk (check the specialty drinks) and sub out whatever flavor that drink has for your desired flavor. Sometimes, it’s worth pricing out where your favorite drink would be cheaper if you subbed products, and where it would be cheaper just to ask for the additional flavor.

Last, but not least, please tip your baristas. I know that seems contradictory. You say, “Wait, we are going to save a few extra cents on a drink just to spend more money by tipping?” Yes, but hear me out. Even if the baristas won’t admit it, or even when they are trying hard to be objective toward customers, they’ll remember who tips well. If you tip your baristas, they’ll make sure to treat your drink with a little extra love.

Life and Laughter—Cold Snap

I

n the lovely, winter song, a family travels over the river and through the woods to visit grandma. It sounds idyllic, with everyone bundled in fur robes as a happy, prancing horse carries them through snow drifts.

I call bull-shenanigans. Winter travel is never that picturesque.

My winter driving dread usually starts around 5 a.m. when the snowplow drops its blade outside my bedroom window. First, I want to murder the snowplow driver. Second, I want to burrow in the blankets and not get out of bed until Easter weekend.

I don’t know if there’s one inch of snow or three feet, but I know stupid drivers will hit the streets soon, causing mishaps and mayhem.

Once I’m ready for work, I jump in my car where the faux leather seats have frozen over like a glacial lake and the steering wheel is now made of solid iceberg. I shiver uncontrollably as I crank the heater up and run through my wide vocabulary of cold-weather swear words. Jack Frost isn’t nipping at my nose; he’s chomping my entire face.

Utah drivers are always encouraged to drive smart and read up on winter safety tips.

Of course, no one does that, so freeways turn into demolition derbies on ice.

Some advice includes: • Never mix radial tires with other tires (because those radial tires are anti-social as hell).

• Keep the gas tank at least half full. (Hahahaha!)

• Steer where you want to go. (This seems like a trick suggestion.)
