GIRLS WRESTLERS TAKE SECOND AT STATE

T

he Utah High School Activities Association held its first-ever sanctioned girls state tournament, and Copper Hills placed second overall.

“I think our season went really well,” Grizzlies girls head coach Scott Pace said. “The girls worked hard and battled through a lot. They finished off strong.”

The Grizzlies had eight wrestlers in the final, and four came away with state championships.

Brooklyn Pace took first in the 115-pound weight class. She was voted wrestler of the tournament in the lower weight class.

Meridien Grandpre won in the 124-pound class. Ashley Wilcox won at 136 pounds, and Anya Hatch won the 170-pound weight class.

The first-year team included 13 girls. Pace considers them pioneers in the sport.

“This team started this,” Pace said. “Their hard work and dedication and efforts will help create a dynasty that will continue on.”

The Grizzly team included some girls that had never wrestled before. Grandpre was a dancer. “[Granpre] was an incredible wrestler,” Pace said. “She took her dancing skill, athleticism, and body awareness and turned into a tough wrestler.”

Hatch, a sophomore, never lost a match all season. She pinned three girls in the state tournament in less than four minutes total.

West Jordan has a balanced budget, says city finance director

“W

e are bringing to you a balanced budget,” said West Jordan finance director Danyce Steck.

“Our revenues equal our expenses.

We will not be using our reserves after this budget amendment.”

When the current fiscal year (FY 2020–2021) budget was adopted last June, city leaders planned to use $2.5 million to balance the budget. This is no longer necessary. The city is bringing in as much as it is spending.

“The increase in revenues comes from $5.19 million in federal CARES Act funding and an additional $6.19 million from higher than expected return from sales tax,” Steck said.

West Jordan has not had a balanced budget since at least FY 2012–2013, perhaps longer.

I think it would be fair to say that West Jordan City has not had a balanced budget in recent history,” Director of Community Affairs Tauni Barker said.

Where is the community arts theatre money?

“We’re asking to remove the community arts center [funds] back into reserves as a restricted reserve,” Steck said. “We’re not going to build it between now and June, so we need to put it back in.” l

Distinguished Principal of the Year

W

hen Principal Joel Pullan was transferred from Oakcrest Elementary to Riverton Elementary in February 2020, he had no idea that just a few short weeks later the staff and students would be sent home to learn long distance for the rest of the year. The qualities that earned him the Distinguished Principal of the Year Award by the Jordan Association of Elementary School Principals this year are the qualities that enabled him to successfully meet this unprecedented challenge.

“His ability to analyze the needs, whether it be academically, socially or physically, is his greatest strength,” said Theresa Christensen, who worked as an assistant principal to Pullan for two years. “He is always thinking one step ahead and planning for the future. Even in the most difficult situations, he has the ability to calm the situation, eliminate the emotion, discern the steps needed and move forward.”

And that’s what Pullan did, addressing, first his faculty, which was grappling with a sudden transition to distance teaching that was frustrating and difficult. He met with them frequently as a group to support them in the technical aspects of teaching online.

He met them in grade-level teams to get to know their strengths and challenges. He also checked in with them individually to see how

they were doing emotionally.

“That surprised many of them,” Pullan said. “Many commented and expressed their gratitude to have a principal that, not just cared about the academics for kids and the educational growth but also cared about teachers who are providing that in a very difficult situation.”

Donna Filion, who previously taught at Oakcrest and is now a fifth grade teacher at Riverton Elementary, said Pullan is the best principal she’s ever worked for. She said he is never too busy to stop and listen to someone and is genuinely interested in what they have to say.

“He is a fantastic listener and mentor,” she said. “He has made me feel like I can accomplish anything and he has validated me. I love going to work. I love the challenges that he gives us, so that we can learn and grow and become better than we were the day before.”

Pullan said the most important skill he uses as a principal is “the ability to see in others what they can be and to appreciate the talents and abilities that they have now.”

“I believe that if I’m successful in any way, shape or form, it’s because of the great people who are around me,” he said. “So, receiving this award is a credit to every teacher and team, every community and every stu-

dent that I’ve worked with over the years.”

Pullan taught in the classroom for eight years before becoming principal at Herriman Elementary for five years and then at Oakcrest for 7 1/2.

As a principal, he strives to build positive relationships.

“When the relationship between the principal and teachers is positive, that goes all the way to the kids,” Pullan said. “When we have that strong relationship and confidence and trust in one another, then we can work together to do amazing things.”

Pullan also values collaboration to create an environment of learning for students, staff and administration.

“He was constantly pursuing more information and knowledge to better himself and his school,” Christensen said.

Tracy Davies, a teacher at Oakcrest, said Pullan was a great principal because he provided staff with growth opportunities.

“He encouraged us to become and do better,” she said. “The opportunities for professional development were given based on our interests and classroom needs. He listened. I feel this greatly contributed to relationship-building with faculty and staff.”

Pullan also builds relationships with students, greeting them in the hallways, the classroom or the playground with his signature thumb-wave.

“It has great meaning for us when we see each other,” Pullan said of his secret wave.

“It symbolizes me being a friend and them being a friend and that we’re in this together.”

Davies said Pullen values students’ input and has always been supportive of the student council’s ideas.

Pullan also values the input of leadership teams as they work together to improve student growth as well as their overall well-being.

Three years ago, there was a disturbing upward trend of suicide risk assessment requests at Oakcrest Elementary, and the leadership team identified student behavior as an impediment to emotional, social and academic success. Pullan introduced methods to improve students’ emotional health.

“Kids deal with trauma at different levels every day, and they bring that trauma every day to school,” Pullan said. “By recognizing the emotional state of kids when they come in, we are better able to support them socially and emotionally in that process and to help them feel that security and safety.”

Teachers began to greet each student by name before class, to make an assessment of their emotional state, to follow up on concerns throughout the day and to send students home with a personal comment or word of praise and an expression of excitement to see them again the next day.

“We received encouragement to really inquire about each student daily,” Davies said. “Before students step foot into our classrooms, we know how their basketball game went the night before, what they had for breakfast or how much they are looking forward to a family vacation next weekend.

We are well aware of their struggles as well, and are able to address them effectively.”

Pullan said within months of implementing these practices, suicide risk assessment requests dropped drastically.

“Kids understood that school was a safe place, that they had a friend there,” he said.

When this school year began with many feeling anxiety about attending school during a pandemic, the primary priority for Pullan and the staff at Riverton Elementary was to create a positive, predictable and safe environment for students. Pullan asked teachers to implement the morning and afternoon personal interaction routines that had been so successful at Oakcrest.

“This is an amazing addition to the classroom because it allows me to say something to each student right at the beginning of our day and it sets the tone of the classroom,” Filion said. “Then at the end of the day, they leave me knowing that I will miss them, that I hope they have a great night and how excited I am to see them tomorrow.”

Pullan is an educator because he cares for kids. So, when the demands of his job become burdensome, he heads to the kindergarten classroom.

“Kindergartners are great, because they say the greatest things—they’re uninhibited learners,” Pullan said. “I go there to get centered and refocused when I need to reaffirm my why I went into education.” l

“I wanted more girls on the team, but in a COVID-laden season, we felt good about that,” Pace said. “Lots of parents were worried about kids picking it up and bringing it home. There were lots of unique things about this season.”

The pandemic forced schools to prohibit fans from attending. Tournaments that have been two days in the past were reduced to oneday events. In the first sanctioned year, it made it hard for the sport to grow.

“We could have no fans,” Pace said. “Kids could not invite their friends to see what they were doing. It made it more difficult.”

In its inaugural season, just over 500 girls completed the hydration test to wrestle. Pace sees the possibility that there could be more than 1,000 next year.

“I think these girls have turned a lot of heads this year—not just our team, but every team had talented girls that worked very hard,” Pace said. “The state has taken notice and gotten behind it. The coaches are starting to see how impactful and what a benefit this can be for the girls. I think this year was an overwhelming success.”

The Grizzlies have several returning for next season, and Pace thinks the team will continue to grow.

“I am extremely proud of these girls,” he said. “It has been a unique and difficult year.” l

Preschool provides learning experiences for preschoolers and teens

T

his month, kids at Copper Cubs Preschool will be counting Lucky Charms marshmallows, graphing rainbows and clovers, and finding rhyming words on gold coins.

These St. Patrick’s Day inspired lesson plans were created and will be taught by high school students who are teachers at Copper Cubs Preschool, which is part of the Early Childhood Development Department at Copper Hills High School.

Each of the six high schools in Jordan District house a preschool lab. High school students take prerequisite classes in child development to prepare them to work in the preschool, where they get hands-on experience to apply what they’ve learned with support from adult faculty.

Rachel Stephenson, director of Junior Jags Preschool at West Jordan High School, said the high school-based preschools offer a lower student to teacher ratio than other community preschools. Because so many students are interested in taking the class, there is usually one teacher for two or three kids and often even one-on-one.

“The children get individual help with writing their name and holding scissors the right way, and they get books read to them often, one-on-one or one teacher to two kids,” Stephenson said.

Stephenson said high school students are great teachers for preschoolers.

“I think there is a very high amount of love and care,” she said. “These high school students love the little kids. They are doing this class because they want to be in the class, and they give these children attention. These high school students are not burnt out.”

“Being a preschool teacher is a whole lot of fun; you have the best moments ever,” said WJHS student Lanna Loring. “Every kid is so unique, and I love watching them grow.”

said, “I love going to preschool and bonding with the kids. I get experience working and teaching younger children every day.”

The preschool curriculum includes a lesson on the theme of the day; activities in math, science, art and language arts; movement; music; free play; and snack time.

Jessica Patterson said Junior Jags has been a wonderful learning environment for her daughter.

“The amazing teachers and student teachers have fueled her appetite for learning,” she said. “She enjoys doing homework, reading time and sharing art projects she has made. She loves to sing songs that she learned at school to her baby sister.”

Melissa Houston likes the academic focus.

“My daughter is always excited to show me the fun projects she’s made and the letter or number practice pages she’s done,” she said. “She loves the homework practice sheets that are optional. I love the Reading Passport that allows her to keep track of what books she’s read at home for the month and pick out a prize at the start of the next month.

It’s a great blend of learning at school supported by parent interaction.”

Being housed at the high school, the preschool has access to school resources, such as big indoor and outdoor areas to hold activities. The Copper Cubs went on a walk to spot animals in the pictures of the school hallways for Zoo Day in February and will follow the trail of tiny feet in the hallways on their leprechaun hunt in March.

At WJHS, the kids visit the animals in the Agricultural Science Department. Both preschools also host visitors such as magicians, puppeteers and the fire department.

“Many activities—special dress-up days, class photos, special visitors, etc.— make this school very unique and special,”

said Wendy McConnehey, whose son attends Junior Jags.

Teaching in the preschool prepares the high schooler students for future careers.

They learn basic job skills and leadership skills that can be applied to any job, said Sherrie Eloff, preschool director at CHHS, but the hands-on experience is especially beneficial for those students considering careers working with children.

“If they are at all interested in possibly going into teaching, then it gives them a good indicator of whether or not they’re going to like it,” Eloff said.

Emma Jensen took childhood development classes at CHHS and decided she wants to become a preschool teacher. Now a senior,

she is teaching in the Copper Cubs classroom and gaining confidence in her abilities.

“It’s definitely made me less scared about being in front of a big group of kids teaching and to handle situations when they happen,” Jensen said.

Isabelle Maudsley, a junior at CHHS, believes learning how to develop age-appropriate lesson plans, communication skills and patience in the preschool class will help her to be a good elementary school teacher.

become an elementary school teacher, said the hands-on experiences she had as a junior and senior in the preschool lab class gave her a glimpse of what it would be like to be an elementary teacher, so she knew she wasn’t wasting time and money pursuing a teaching degree in college..

“I had many teachers in elementary that quit after their first year because they didn’t have the hands-on experience and know what to expect when you’re teaching,” Higley said. “I’m grateful that I was able to be in the preschool program at CHHS. It has made me learn to be a better teacher.”

Preschool classes are 2 hours and 15 minutes, Monday/Wednesday and Tuesday/ Thursday. Registration for next year is open now for 3- and 4-year-olds.

Years past, West Jordan has held spring clean-up days. Due to COVID last year and this year, we will not be holding the clean-up event. Salt Lake County Health Department Distributes COVID-19 Vaccines in West Jordan

The Salt Lake County Health Department distributed COVID-19 vaccines to residents 70 and older at the West Jordan Senior Center.

In late February, the state of Utah announced Utahns between the ages of 65-69 are eligible to register for their vaccine. Starting March 1st, residents of any age, with underlying health conditions will be able to register for their appointment.

Mayor Dirk Burton volunteered at the Rec center where he received a tour and was able to sit down and talk with some of the recipients. Many of them were there for their first shot and will be returning in a few weeks for their second dose.

The state of Utah has administered more than 500,000 vaccines to residents and are pushing to double that number by the summer.

Jordan School District Announces New Learning Opportunities for Students in 2021-2022 School Year The Jordan School District is preparing to open three new and unique schools.

Kings Peak High School, Kelsey Peak Virtual Middle School and Rocky Peak Virtual Elementary School are part of the Jordan Virtual Learning Academy. The schools will give students the option to learn virtually starting next year.

“These opportunities will give students more options in the way in which they learn,” said Jordan School District Superintendent Dr Anthony Godfrey. “It’s a big leap for us to move to having three separate online schools.”

Ross Menlove is the new principal of Rocky Peak Virtual Elementary, with a background in teaching and instruction, Menlove said he’s excited to offer parents more options when it comes to their child and learning.

“Currently all of our online program is synchronous, live with the teacher.

What we’re going to be offering next year is asynchronous, meaning that the student can log in and they can complete their coursework for that day, any time, any place, any pace,” Menlove said.

All three schools fall under the Jordan Virtual Learning Academy, but they are individual schools, and they are currently hiring.

For parents with middle school aged children, Principal of Kelsey Peak Virtual Middle School Spencer Campbell said you can expect flexibility and predictability.

“Currently, we have students in a variety of situations throughout the District.

For example, we have a student that has high anxiety and coming to school is difficult for them. Or maybe they want to take their core classes online and they want to take their extracurricular or their elective classes at the school. They have that option,” explained Campbell.

Ammon Wiemers, principal of Kings Peak High School, said this new option of learning gives students the opportunity to show they can work independently.

“This is a decision that parents need to make with their students. And while it is a new high school, we have some idea of who might be successful here,” said Wiemers. “They can work at their own pace and make good choices on their own.”

Salt Storage and Use in West Jordan

The City of West Jordan uses two types of salt for snow removal: Type “C” (white) road salt and Redmond (a reddish in color) high performance road salt. Both types of salt are on the State of Utah’s cooperative contract.

The quantify of salt distributed with storms varies, as does the material the city uses. Storms warmer or closer to 32 degrees Fahrenheit and above, the city uses straight Type “C” road salt.

For storms which are in the mid 20 degrees Fahrenheit, the city uses a mixture of Type “C” salt and Redmond salt.

“I compare it to ‘hamburger helper’ as the Redmond activates faster and is more effective with the colder temperatures – yet we can mix it with the Type ‘C’ salt to make it go further,” Tim Peters, West Jordan Public Services Manager, said. When it comes to very cold temperatures, the city will need to use Redmond salt because the Type “C” salt becomes less effective.

Redmond salt’s unique composition is designed to penetrate and dis-bond better than white salt. Pound for pound, Redmond is naturally equipped to melt more, melt faster and last longer on the road.

Redmond salt doesn’t come from Utah’s Great Salt Lake, it comes from an ancient salt deposit near the small town of Redmond, Utah, which is more than 150

miles south of the Great Salt Lake. More than 60 trace materials and micro-nutrients give it a reddish color.

That color provides several benefits when dropped on the road. Having a red hue enhances performance.

Studies show it can absorb up to 50% more heat from the sun, allowing it work better than white salt.

Public Meetings in March The City of West Jordan has two public meetings coming up – residents are welcome to join and weigh in with any questions.

1300 WEST BETWEEN 6600 SOUTH AND 9400 SOUTH A virtual (Zoom/Facebook) public open house is planned for March 11, 2021 at 7 PM. The meeting will inform area residents, drivers and business owners about the project plans.

The city plans to improve 1300 West from 6600 South to 9400 South by adding bike lanes, new storm drains, sidewalks, and lighting.

Construction is currently estimated for 2023 and 2024.

7800 SOUTH BETWEEN HIGHLANDS LOOP ROAD AND U-111 West Jordan plans to improve 7800 South from the Highlands Loop Road roundabout to U-111 by adding lanes, storm drainage, water system improvements, sewer upgrades, curb and gutter and sidewalk, and lighting where none exist. The roadway surface will also undergo a resurfacing treatment.

A virtual (Zoom/Facebook) public open house is planned for March 18, 2021 at 7 PM. The meeting will inform residents, motorists and business owners about the project plans.

Bee-coming the difference to save pollinators

ative pollinator populations are in decline and a team of high school students is enlisting the public’s help to save bees, butterflies and other natural pollinators.

“It’s an ever-growing problem that just needed a solution to help the pollinator,” Kyana Trane said. “We’re trying to get people more aware that they’re important and that they’re not as scary as they may seem.”

Kyana, her sister Donna, Emma Davis, Lowell Saign, Kate Watson and Zachary Watson have been studying the plight of pollinators over the past four years as part of various school projects at Mountain Heights Academy, which they attend virtually.

The team is now focused on educational outreach and providing resources to encourage community members to be part of their project, which they’ve titled “Bee-coming the Difference.”

These high school students developed an elementary school curriculum that clears up myths and misinformation about bees, explains their important role and enlists kids to help protect them. They provide schools with a bucket of flowers for the school yard and a packet of seeds for each child to plant at home to make bees feel welcome.

The team encourages everyone to plant wildflowers and garden plants that attract pollinating insects. According to the data they’ve collected, this simple gesture can have a positive effect on pollinator populations. Last year, each of the students planted a home garden and grew wildflowers in their yard. Because MHA is an online school, team members live in different areas—from Sandy to American Fork to Uintah Basin—and were able to collect data in a variety of environments.

over the summer about different pollinators that they found in the different gardens,” said MHA science teacher and team coach Amy Pace. “So, we have data about the number and the types of all the different pollinators for both types of environments, urban and rural.”

Donna and Kyana, who live in an agricultural area of Great Basin, collected data on their family’s farm.

“We usually grow alfalfa, so we’ll see tons of pollinators there that help our crop,” Donna said.

Their efforts on the project inspired their family to open a conservation on their farm to protect pollinators. While that is a great outcome of the project, Pace insists that even a small flower patch can make a difference.

“Everybody, whether you’re in a rural area or an urban area, can do your part to encourage native pollinators, just in your yard or in your neighborhood,” she said. “It doesn’t require a huge effort to just have some flowers.”

The team created a website at science86. wixsite.com/bee-coming, to explain their project and solutions. There are links to the school curriculum, information about what plants will attract certain pollinators and a data log where community members can contribute their own data to help track pollinator populations.

The website also provides a file for printing a 3D nesting box, which the team is encouraging community members to print and place around their homes and businesses to provide a place for endangered pollinators to nest.

This winter, the students experimented with various building materials to make nesting boxes with different sized holes for pollinators to burrow in. They created several designs but decided the 3D printed design is the simplest way for anyone with access to a 3D printer, commonly available at schools and public libraries, to quickly and easily print a box for their yard.

“It’s as simple as just hanging up this little native pollinator house with little holes in it, that the bees can go in,” Pace said. “That provides a huge resource for the bees, to be able to have a place to live and to make it over the winter, because without those homes they die.”

Donna believes the more people who are aware of the problems and solutions affecting pollinators, the more of a difference they can make to their survival.

“If a lot of people are really willing just to simply plant flowers or make a nesting box or just reduce the use of pesticides or the threats to pollinators and just, ultimately, be aware of what we can do to help, they can survive,” Donna said.

students and their teachers to creatively use STEM skills to address a challenge in their community. They were chosen as one of 75 semifinalist teams to receive $15,000 and a Samsung Galaxy Note20.

Team coach Lora Gibbons said MHA has always supported students entering these types of contests, even before it was profitable. When their teams do earn award money, it is invested back into the program. The 3D printers used to print nesting boxes for this year’s project were purchased with the winnings of the school team that was a finalist in last year’s Samsung competition.

ecords are meant to be broken.

The girls Copper Hills swim team broke two school records this season on its way to a region championship, the first in school history.

“I am super thrilled that we had a great year,” Grizzlies head swim coach Markie Harper said.

Hayley Bachman, Jersey Nielsen, Jade Updike and Katelyn Riddle combined to establish new school records in the 200 and 400 freestyle relays.

“It was super cool to watch and they are ranked high in the state right now,” Harper said. “I am excited to see how they do.”

In the 200 relay, Bachman, Updike and Nielsen had forged a small lead over the Bingham and Jordan swimmers, coming into the final leg of the race. Junior Katelyn Riddle secured the win by swimming a final 50 meters in 25.32 seconds.

Their 200 time of 1 minute 44.39 seconds was the fourth-fastest time in the state behind Lone Peak’s 1:40.19. Their 400 relay time was fourth fastest.

“I have never seen anyone work as hard as these girls have this year,” Harper said. “I am super proud of them and the whole team.

At region, we had 63 personal records.”

The swim team ended the season with 44 team members. It had 13 (eight girls and five boys) that qualified for the state swim meet.

The Utah High School Activities Association 6A state swim meet was scheduled for Feb. 19–20 (after press deadline) at the Kearns Oquirrh Park Fitness Center. This season, the state meets were split up by classification because of COVID concerns.

Bachman is a freshman and had the

team’s fastest times in the 50 and 100 free.

Senior Kylee Nelson swam a 1:04.25 in the 100 butterfly; Riddle had a fast time of 1:07.35 in the 100 backstroke; sophomore Marissa Visser swam the 100 breaststroke in 1:15.25; and Updike posted a 2:02.48 in the 200 free.

The boys finished sixth in the region.

“I am super impressed with my boys,” Harper said. “There was not a ton of them, but they were happy all season, and that is the important thing.”

Fast times this season for the boys were accomplished by Kaden Eichelberger in the 50 and 100 free; Lars Leigh in the 100 butterfly, 200 individual medley and 100 breaststroke; Andrew Jensen in the 100 backstroke; and Sebastian Bodero in the 200 and 500 freestyle.

“This year, we had to remember that at least we were swimming, we were not shut down,” Harper said. “The boys supported each other and even had a ‘who did it better’ selfie contest against the girls. It was hysterical.”

The Grizzlies practice and use the KOPFC as their home pool.

“We consider ourselves lucky,” Harper said. “We do not have to fight for pool time, and Kearns Oquirrh Park has been great to us.”

This is Harper’s first season as head coach at Copper Hills. The coaching staff includes Angela Western and Becky Babcock. The Booster Club president is Jennifer Ludwig.

“We have a great coaching staff, and they have made all the difference for these kids,” Harper said. “I feel super lucky to coach. I think we are in a good place to keep working hard and find ourselves another championship somewhere.” l

The other day I was talking with my husband and we were both commenting on how we’ve felt a bit of depression set in from this long COVID year. We all need human interaction to thrive, and with health challenges, financial pressures, political unrest, and so much uncertainty, it’s no wonder that many of us feel a little down. I wanted to share some tips from Salt Lake County’s Health Department on how to improve or maintain your mental and social health as we head into the final stretch.

Take breaks from the news and social media - It is important to stay informed, but constantly hearing about the pandemic or politics is exhausting and upsetting. Limit your news and social media intake to once a day or every other day.

Practice Mindfulness – Set aside time every day (even for five minutes) to be in the present moment. You can do this by meditating, journaling, or focusing on your breathing.

Go outside for 30 minutes every day– Bundle up and get outside. Being outdoors is a natural antidepressant as sunshine naturally increases serotonin and endorphins that boost energy and reduce pain.

Get enough sleep – Stick to a regular sleep schedule and give yourself extra wind-down time each night before bed to read, stretch, and/or meditate to ensure quality sleep.

Stay in touch – Be intentional with your connections by scheduling regular video chats, phone calls, or text messages with loved ones.

Try online exercise classes – Salt Lake County Parks and Rec are hosting online exercise classes for all activity levels. Check out the schedules at slco.org/parks-recreation.

Take Virtual Tours with loved ones – The Utah Hogle Zoo, Utah Museum of Contemporary Art, The Leonardo, and the Tracy Aviary all offer virtual experiences to enjoy with family and friends.

After reviewing this list, I have to admit that I need to do better on my sleep habits. And keeping my cell phone next to my bed is probably not helpful. One thing we did this past summer is welcomed our first pet (fish excluded) into our family. Ripley, our mini goldendoodle puppy, has forced us out for walks every day, and she’s kept life interesting during the pandemic. Some of my favorite memories have been Zoom calls with the entire Winder or Newton extended family so we could catch up and hear how everyone was doing.

This pandemic will only break down our mental health and friendships if we let it, so take active steps to stay engaged, integrate healthy behaviors, and connect with our loved ones. Finance director assesses city revenues

est Jordan’s fiscal year (FY) 2020– 2021 budget is balanced. Now how does the city keep it that way?

Finance Director Danyce Steck outlined revenues to the city council in February and how to keep spending under what comes in.

“Instead of expenses driving revenue, we’re driving the revenue first,” Steck said.

“We’re saying this is what our budget is, and our expenses are going to have to fit in this box.”

Revenue comes through three avenues: sales tax, property tax, and fees and fines.

“Our general fund revenues are going to be about 30% property tax, about $17.4 million,” Steck said. “Sales tax is 40% at $23 million. The rest is from franchise taxes (cable, hotel room tax, telecommunication) and fines and fees (permitting, charges for services, fines for the court).”

Some revenue streams are slowly drying up, and what used to be reliable income is no longer something the city can count on. This means that other sources of income must be found.

“Telecom is continuing to be reduced in revenue,” Steck said. “We’re almost in half in the short year period (2018–2022). Cable, we might see the same trend. We’re not seeing it decrease too much right now, but as streaming services continue to move forward, we

may see the reduction in cable services.”

As of February, Steck is planning to keep expense planning in line with revenues from last year, rather than budgeting on uncertain income growth.

“If you were to [spend] everything that you did in 2021 and change nothing, that was $57 million,” Steck said. “Change nothing” means at this point there is little room to bring back employees, raise salaries or add any services on top of what the city is already doing.

More than 30 employment positions were lost last year after the state declared a state of emergency.

Copper Hills finishes runner up in region

opper Hills is making its presence known in Region 3 basketball.

The Grizzlies had just two region losses this season, and both came at the hands of crosstown rival Bingham. In the first loss, the Miners held the Grizzlies to just 39 points, a season-low.

Copper Hills finished in second place in Region 3. The Grizzlies were defending champions having won the last four region titles.

Junior McCoy Langston has stepped forward as a leader for the Grizzlies. The 6-foot6-inch forward has scored in double figures in 11 of 15 games this season. He scored a season-high 25 points at Herriman on Jan. 26. His increase in scoring has directly coincided with a better proficiency at shooting three-pointers; he leads the team with 38 this season.

Carson Butler has made 37 three-point shots this season. He has 119 in his high school career and amassed over 500 points in that period.

Quincy Hills has averaged 3.6 assists a game, leading the team.

Copper Hills started the season with a 20-point victory over Hillcrest. I was able to pull away in the fourth quarter for that win.

Langston had 14 points.

The Grizzlies are averaging 16.6 points in the fourth quarter. They have scored as many as 25; the low point of the year came Feb.12 against Riverton with nine.

Overall, the Grizzlies ended the regular season with a 13-5 record. Three of those losses came in the Skyridge Holiday tournament to Skyridge, Davis and Layton.

High School Activities Association’s rating performance index. They ended last season ranked eighth as well. The RPI is used to seed the teams into the state tournament bracket.

John Watkins is in his second year as head coach. He had been an assistant coach with the team for 13 seasons. He took over last season after Andrew Blanchard stepped down.

The Grizzlies lost in the second round of the state playoffs last season to Westlake 6156. They defeated Granger in the first round by 15 points. In 2019 they lost in the quarterfinals to American Fork. l

rofessional soccer player Alex Kimball, who returned to her Salt Lake roots as a member of the Utah Royals, headlines a new six-week online training program that will begin March 15. Ultimate Virtual Soccer Training for Female Athletes is aimed at training young female soccer players, ages 13 to 17, in the skills and knowledge needed to improve their performance. The first week is being offered for free to give those interested a glimpse of the program.

“We are so excited for this program,” said Utah-based Sport Ready founder Robin Cecil, a physical therapist of 25 years.

“To have a strategic advantage, one must train all aspects of the game and be available to train. This course provides a holistic approach that includes the soccer specific and physical aspects of training, along with other aspects, such as core values, and how behaviors affect an athlete’s performance.”

Kimball, who splits time living and training in the Salt Lake area and North Carolina where she played collegiately for the storied Tar Heels program, said she is excited to share her experiences with younger players. “We’re going to educate and help you train yourself in ways that you’ve never probably learned before,” she said. “I wish I knew then what I know now.”

Cecil said the program will give a comprehensive outlook and “some real takeaways” to educate youth athletes and empower them to know what to do to take care of their bodies.

“We’re not trying to take away from club soccer, just enhancing their knowledge base and overall experience to play the sport as long as they can and in the safest way possible,” she said.

Other professional soccer players, including 2019 FIFA World Cup player Jessica McDonald, Manchester United player Alesia Russo along with former BYU player Alyssa Jefferson will also be featured in the training.

The online training course will be also be taught by other sports professionals, including RSL nutritionist Michelle Meinking and sports endocrinologist Nicki Keay who has worked with elite athletes for more than two decades.

The focus of the program will be on learning what type of training and recovery to do; in what season of play, and how much; strategies to train mental strength and improve well-being; proper nutrition; tools to help you communicate effectively with coaches and parents; increasing awareness of female physiology; learning

how to listen to your body; and decreasing injury risk. There will also be weekly competitions and interactive activities.

“Our staff understands what it takes to make it to the top and can guide athletes in their journey,” Cecil said. “With our expertise, our hope is to give every female soccer player an equal playing field and provide a virtual conduit to sustained development.”

Kimball will lead athletes through training drills while athletes will additionally be involved in live question and answer sessions, among other aspects of the program. The training will take about one hour per day, four to five days a week, depending on the individual schedule of each participant.

Like a mother in a Disney movie, my cell phone died inexplicably. Well, not inexplicably. I dropped it in the toilet.

I was wearing jeans for the first time in seven months and had the phone in my back pocket when it promptly fell into the commode. My phone, not my back pocket.

There’s a universal response when you drop your phone in liquid; you reach in and grab the damn thing. It could be submerged in molten lava or boiling oil; you will instinctively reach for the phone at the expense of ever using your hand again.

Snatching it up, I screamed several unprintable words and resorted to 15 minutes of “No, no, no, no, no!” I shook my phone, blew in it, prayed over it and dashed home to dump it in a bowl of rice. (A robot on Mars can send information to NASA but I have to submerge my phone in rice because it got wet.)

I thought, this would make a great Instagram post and frantically looked for my phone so I could take a picture of my phone sitting in a bowl of rice.

But I was phoneless. I reached for my phone nonstop. I absently grabbed the TV remote, trying to scroll through Tik Tok. I picked up my computer mouse to check the time. I kept patting my leggings where my cell phone used to be, frisking myself like some weird felon.

Simple Fix in West Jordan, saying they work miracles. Miracles sounded pretty good, but they couldn’t look at my phone for several days.

Several days without a phone? Impossible! What would I listen to while walking my dog? Who was Scam Likely going to call? What if Samantha Bee texts me about a job? How would I waste hours of my time doing something unnecessary?

The typical cell phone weighs four or five ounces but after a day without my phone, I felt weightless. After two days I could talk to my husband without furtive glances at my phone. After three days, I didn’t miss playing Words with Friends.

Is this what life is supposed to feel like?

I swore when I got my phone back, it wouldn’t control me anymore.

Then I got my phone back. I listened to all the podcasts, played all the games, bought everything on Amazon and beat my family at Words with Friends. I ignored my husband, tuned out the world in general and scrolled endlessly through social media platforms.

The lesson here should be turn off your phone and interact with the real world. But what I learned was I need to buy cargo pants with dozens of secure pockets so my phone will never fall into the toilet again.

GIRLS WRESTLERS TAKE SECOND AT STATE

T

he Utah High School Activities Association held its first-ever sanctioned girls state tournament, and Copper Hills placed second overall.

“I think our season went really well,” Grizzlies girls head coach Scott Pace said. “The girls worked hard and battled through a lot. They finished off strong.”

The Grizzlies had eight wrestlers in the final, and four came away with state championships.

Brooklyn Pace took first in the 115-pound weight class. She was voted wrestler of the tournament in the lower weight class.

Meridien Grandpre won in the 124-pound class. Ashley Wilcox won at 136 pounds, and Anya Hatch won the 170-pound weight class.

The first-year team included 13 girls. Pace considers them pioneers in the sport.

“This team started this,” Pace said. “Their hard work and dedication and efforts will help create a dynasty that will continue on.”

The Grizzly team included some girls that had never wrestled before. Grandpre was a dancer. “[Granpre] was an incredible wrestler,” Pace said. “She took her dancing skill, athleticism, and body awareness and turned into a tough wrestler.”

Hatch, a sophomore, never lost a match all season. She pinned three girls in the state tournament in less than four minutes total.
