FAMILY BATTLESS TO RAISE FUNDS FOR SERVICE DOG

S

even years ago, Avery Edwards was born with cytomegalovirus (CMV). The virus left him with long-term challenges, including hearing impairment. At age 4 he was diagnosed with prioproception (meaning he has difficulty determining where his body is in space) and vestibular dysfunction. More recently, he received a diagnosis of autism.

“When Avery is told he has to go to the doctor he is struck with fear that sometimes we cannot get him out the door,” the family writes. “This comes from the fact that he has had six surgeries and is only 7 years old. He is also very scared to try new things because of his sensory disorders (proprioception and vestibular dysfunction). These sensory issues cause issues with balance and being able to tell where your body is in its current space.”

As his parents researched ways to help Avery, they learned the family dog, Domino, could be trained as a service dog, providing assistance with Avery’s various challenges.

Avery had already developed a strong bond with Domino. As the family began looking into local trainers that could help Domino become a service dog, they got in touch with trainer Katie Ashby of Legendary Service Dogs. Both Avery and Domino were evaluated for service work and told that they were good candidates for training. It was great news for the Edwards family—except that the training would cost $8,000, an expense not covered at all by insurance.

But none has gotten the results they hope for.

Smiths and Walmart will not let you set up fundraisers on their property unless you’re affiliated with a larger organization, Chelsey said. They set up a fundraiser with Waffle Love in Jordan Landing, where a percentage of each order would be donated to the family when a customer mentioned the “service dog fundraiser.” But “nobody showed up.”

They’ve run a similar fundraiser with Beans and Brews, where donors win gift cards but without many takers. They’ve created a GoFundMe (which to date has raised just under $400) and a Facebook page to document Domino’s training and raise funds. Donors there have given about $200. Most of what they’ve raised so far is from friends and family.

Chelsey Edwards understands why donations have been so difficult to come by. “The economy is bad; many are unemployed,” she said. “COVID has caused delayed donations.”

And though they’re grateful for each donation, they’re still far from their $8,000 goal after months of effort. “I’m not really sure how to get the word out there,” Chelsey said.

The family has foregone little luxuries like ordering out or going to a movie so that any extra funds can go toward Domino’s training. “It’s exhausting, and it’s tiring,” she said. “I just keep hoping that we’ll get

The next stage of training will help him navigate non-dog-friendly places. Then Domino will begin his service training.

Boarding stays, recommended at this stage, are $1,000. From start to finish, it will take two years.

As a trained service dog, Domino will be able to assist Avery in navigating the world with hearing impairment, as well as deep pressure therapy to help with his prioproception.

Having Domino by his side will help Avery no matter how old he is. But at this point, “doing everyday things with [Avery] is difficult,” Chelsey said. The sooner Domino is trained, the sooner the whole family will be able to enjoy life a little bit more. “It is exhausting and discouraging that it’s not happening as fast as it would like it to.

Sister’s cancer diagnosis helped launch this vintage vendor

S

tephanie Gardner has had an eye for design and decoration for as long as she can remember. “First I wanted to be an architect,” she said. “But that was all boys when I was in school.”

So she got her degree in business management, and her interest in design was funneled instead into vintage furniture. For years before she began her own business, she would regularly attend local vintage shows, including Market Beautiful and The Vintage Whites Market in Salt Lake City. Attending shows was something she and her younger sister loved to do together.

Eight years ago, Gardner’s sister was diagnosed with colon cancer at age 38. Shortly after her diagnosis, the two sisters were at a vintage show together when Gardner was struck with an idea. “Hey, next year, let’s do this,” she remembers saying to her sister. They had the passion, they had the know-how. It was time to make it happen.

“She didn’t make it to the next year,” Gardner said. “That was my jumping-off point.”

The now-or-never spirit that her sister’s diagnosis inspired gave Gardner the motivation to make her dream a reality. Today, she and her husband, Justin Gardner, are full-time sourcers, refurbishers and vendors of vintage furniture. They maintain an Instagram account, @gardenof8s, but primarily sell from brickand-mortar shops: Funky Junk in West Jordan and The Old Flamingo in Holladay.

“It’s like being a buyer for any shop,” Gardner said of her job. She scours thrift shops, yard sales and estate sales for forgotten furniture, then brings it back to life.

In addition to reinvigorating individual pieces, Gardner has a passion for styling them in full designs, creating spaces that are “meaningful” and unique. One of her most memorable projects was part of the Millcreek Arts Festival, where they did a booth showing how to

“transform” a room using vintage pieces.

It’s all about “mixing the new and the old,” she said. She aims to bring personality into a space by using one-of-a-kind pieces that no one else is going to have.

Funky Junk, located on Redwood Road and 9000 South, opened in 2016. It’s a cooperative shared by eight different vendors, each of whom pay an equal share of the rent: $700 per month. “A cooperative is great because you don’t have to stock a full store,” she said.

Gardner and her fellow vintage vendors have certainly felt the economic impact of COVID, but because their model allows them to spread out the expenses, the burden of rent doesn’t all fall on one person.

Still, the pandemic has taken its toll. The second weekend of November, a large annual event was supposed to take place involving both shops where she sells. “In years past, these would be $7,000 days,” she said. “That’s kind of off.” But she is confident in the relationships she’s built with customers over the years and said they will continue to shop with her. Now more than ever, it’s important to shop small businesses.

As a mother of six children ages 15 to 20 (including a niece and nephew adopted in 2010), she’s put her family before her shop.

But now that her children are aging into independence, she’s been able to give full-time hours to her business.

And her children share their parents’ passion for treasure hunting. “I can send my boys out now to find stuff,” Gardner said. “They have an eye, too.” One son curated his own selection of old comic books within the shop.

Gardner has worked to instill in her children the principle that you don’t always have to buy new. “Sometimes the clothing and furniture you can find secondhand is a hundred times better than what you can find new,” she said.

She’s right: the secondhand clothing market is growing 24 times faster than traditional retail, driven largely by millennials and Gen Zers who have a strong desire to shop sustainably while also finding unique pieces. Thrift and secondhand shopping in general is booming around the globe.

Stephanie’s expert tips for finding secondhand gems? First, frequent a lot of different shops. Don’t limit yourself to one area. Next, have a goal, but go with an open mind. Finally,

he Jones Ranch plan, a 592-acre development on the west side of West Jordan, is inching forward.

In September, the West Jordan City Council deliberated on the needs of the development, transportation support, density and how much commercial space to include. Most of the development is housing, with the maximum-allowed housing units, is 2,960 over the entire acreage. Thirty-five acres is open for commercial space. Nineteen percent of the entire space was left for green space, which was just under the city’s 20% general open space requirement.

Because of this, the council needed to decide whether to change the green space requirement or refuse the development plan.

In November, the council did approve an amendment that would allow 17% open space in future developments, therefore allowing the Jones Ranch development plan to progress.

However, the new 17% requirement comes with a condition.

City planner Scott Langford said while the code may allow for less green space, it is not a guarantee for every future developer. “It’s not just a free waiver,” he said. “If the council does choose to lower the open space requirement, it’s going to be based on specific findings and make it unique.

West Jordan’s code [still] calls for an initial 20% gross open space, though it leaves some room for flexibility.”

Duncan Murray, an attorney for West Jordan, reiterated that the zone change will, “[Make] sure that we are sufficiently able to communicate to the public the benefit to the city that is provided that each time a provision is modified especially in regards to density or open space.”

Student mentor shares secrets for a winning STEM fair project

verwhelmed by the thought of helping your child prepare a STEM Fair project?

Wish you knew the tips and secrets to a successful project and had a personal mentor to walk you through it? You’re in luck!

Jordan School District has released a 10step online Canvas course that provides students in grades 4–12 access to instructions, resources and tools to develop a successful STEM Fair project.

Jordan School District science specialists Lynn Gutzwiller and Rachael Coleman said STEM Fair projects can often be overwhelming to students. The new course breaks down each component of the process into manageable modules, with resources, videos and templates for students to follow.

Students are led through every step of the course by a digital mentor, Afton Barron, a seventh grader who also helped create, design and organize content for the course.

Afton provides the audio instructions and voice-overs and even filmed most of the video components herself. Afton also provides weekly virtual tutoring sessions for students taking the course.

Afton is a great mentor for students. She has competed in seven STEM fairs in the last three years, winning most of them. She was Grand Champion at last year’s Central Utah Science and Engineering Fair which earned her invitations to apply to other state and national fairs, including the prestigious national Broadcom Masters competition.

Afton also brought her experience as a student to increase the usability of the course for teachers and students.

“Being in online school, she’s been exposed to a whole bunch of really cool programs that her teachers are using,” Janae Barron, her mother, said.

Afton used tools she’d used for school assignments to easily edit video clips for the course. She also suggested including links to tools, such as a graph maker that she uses in class, as a resource for students in the course.

Gutzwiller and Coleman said the Canvas course meets the unique needs of this unique year. Teachers are depending on more online content this year, and the students are required to submit projects in a digital format for the district fair this year.

The course sets out a step-by-step planning guide with instructions, reminders, helpful hints, hyperlinks to tools and information, a comprehensive Google Doc to keep everything together, and information about what judges are looking for and how to maximize points earned. Everything is color-coded and accessible with Afton’s videos, voice-overs and kid-friendly explanations.

“It’s really important that the kids have an ability to have someone explaining it to them,” Barron said. “There’s just too much information in these templates that it is a little intimidating.”

The content can be scaled from basic to complex to meet the needs of students in any grade.

“Somebody who’s brand new, like a fourth grader, we expect the template will be a starting spot for them, but there’ll be so much that’s lost on them,” Barron said. “But for the 11th grader who will need to go beyond it, at least it gets them thinking about what’s needed and they could use it and have a very competitive project.”

Afton is proud of the end result of all her efforts.

“The course is rigorous, but I think it is pretty user-friendly,” she said. “It’s relatively easy to navigate, and the content is great as well. So, it’s just a good resource.”

Afton’s contribution to the JSD science department is not unique. Several years ago, her older sister Amber created and shared a STEM Fair project template that can still be found on the JSD website, along with the grant she applied for to help cover project costs. (Using this engineering mini grant is one of the many tips Afton incorporated into the Canvas course.)

This year, only students who participate in the STEM Fair course can participate in the district fair and access can only be granted by a student’s teacher.

The detailed course and the personalized help for students will ease the workload of teachers who want their students to participate but don’t have class time to guide students through the steps.

“Teachers are spread so thin,” Barron said. “So we were just super excited to be able to maybe do something that not only helps kids but also teachers.”

She also hopes parents see the course as a way to make the process easier on the whole family.

“There’s a lot of pushback from not only students but parents who understand that it is a lot of work but don’t necessarily understand all the learning that’s taking place,” Barron said.

“I’ve been over this ground multiple times, and I’ve seen children empowered over and over and over again,” said Barron, whose two older daughters who participated in STEM fairs—even competing internationally—have gone on to work in their dream jobs in STEM fields. “As a parent, I’ve seen the good it did in my children. Then as a teacher, I’ve seen the amazing benefits that occur when students are involved with a STEM fair project. There’s so much power that happens when kids have the opportunity to be able to think of real-world solutions and overcome obstacles.”

Barron said the course is helping to prepare future leaders.

“If we’re going to be able to do what the governor is wanting to do to be able to have our students prepared for 21st-century ca-

reers—that have not even been developed— we need to empower these children,” Barron said. “They are the children who are going to grow up and are going to make those jobs.”

uary and February to determine which projects will advance to the District STEM Fair, held virtually Feb. 18. Finalists in the district fair will go on to compete in the Central Utah STEM Fair, sponsored by BYU, held virtually March 22–25. l

Copper Hills has secured its spot as a volleyball powerhouse

opper Hills volleyball players were disappointed their season did not end with a championship, but with today’s worldwide challenges, they will take their second-place trophy.

“It is hard to talk about a loss.,” Grizzlies head volleyball coach Silver Fonua said. “We had higher expectations, but I can see a lot of the accomplishments we had. It was a great season for us.”

Headed into the 2020 season the Grizzlies hoped to take the next step towards a state championship. They thought that this was their year. A senior-laden team wanted to accomplish what no Salt Lake County school had done since Brighton won in 2006: win the Utah High School Activities Association’s top classification trophy.

Copper Hills avenged last season’s final loss to Pleasant Grove in thrilling fashion. Down two sets to none, the Grizzlies stormed back to advance to the Saturday final. A powerful Lone Peak squad had other plans and defeated them in four sets (25-18, 20-25, 25-18, 25-23).

“Getting to a 6A final again and the things we have accomplished this is by far the best season,” Fonua said. “I am happy and proud of what we have done and how we have represented Copper Hills. If anything, I am grateful that we were able to finish the season. I am proud and happy that the Utah High School Association and Jordan School District did their best and kept fighting to keep sports going.”

The finals match was full of ups and downs for the Grizzlies. In the first set, Copper Hills went up 4-1 before Lone Peak stormed back. The second set was completely opposite. Fonua said his team was focused on each and every point and not the momentum that found itself in the gym that day.

“At higher levels, the great teams play one point at a time,” he said. “Each serve we had to separate ourselves from the emotion. They did a great job serving, and we had a tough time passing. They did a good job against us.”

The back-row defenders for the Grizzlies did a good job of keeping the ball alive. Randi Reeves led that charge by getting to many of the difficult Knights serves.

“I think she (Reeves) is the best libero in the state,” Fonua said. “Nobody really knew about her. She stepped in this year. She is the reason we hit so well. She digs and passes and gives our hitters opportunities to put away a ball.”

Priscilla “Baby” Moleni and Lolohea Fonua played important roles as opposite side blocker and hitter. Senior setter Teniyah Leuluai record 22 assists.

“Teniyah is probably the best setter in the state,” Fonua said. “We lose several seniors, and they will be hard to see go, but I feel confident in the players we can plug in and be successful. This senior class is the best we have had in our short tradition. We have a lot that could play college ball if they take the opportunity.”

Asiah and Aliyah Sopoaga, senior twins, played all-around strong games in the finals match. Asiah had 11 kills; Aliyah had 11 digs.

“Asiah is an outside hitter, and Aliyah is a setter, and they play their particular positions and are very good,” Fonua said. “I think they can do everything. They work their butt off. They spend the offseason training, and it makes them better all-around. It has been a blessing to have them in our gym.”

Sophomore Mya Laufiso showed poise in her 20 service attempts with only one service error and two aces.

“She (Mya) is the youngest player on our team and comes from a great family,” Fonua said. “Her older sister played for us, and she has watched the game. She is advanced beyond what a sophomore normally is. She is fearless.”

Junior Elle Hutchings is a two-year starter and had a tremendous game with seven kills.

“She (Hutchings) has worked really hard,” Fonua said. “I think there is a lot of pressure on her. She has accepted that challenge. She is undersize and is banging balls against bigger and taller girls. She has learned and is one that never gets too high or too low; she just works.”

The gym for the championship game was filled two-thirds with Copper Hills fans.

“It is a family, and we represent the community,” Fonua said. “We felt their support. We had great support from our students and even the sub-varsity players. They have watched us go and become the top dogs. They can relate. It was memorable to come out of the hallway and feel the cheers. This team has brought together this community. We look like the underdog.” l

Lions Club honors West Jordan police officers

he Holladay and Salt Lake Valley Lions Club sent a big “thank-you” snack package to West Jordan police officers in late October.

Holladay/Salt Lake Valley Lions Club President Bill Barton said, “With help from Frito Lay and several of the community businesses [we] presented the officers with many drinks and snacks.”

Included with the package was a note saying, “[We] would like to express our most sincere thanks to each of the West Jordan po-

lice officers for their hard work, commitment and dedication in protecting our community and its citizens.

We realize that being a police officer is one of the most challenging jobs in the community, especially at this time. We truly appreciate all you do.”

This same Lions Club chapter also donated similar thank-you packages to other police departments around the Salt Lake Valley.

The Lions Club is an international organization with a motto of “We serve.”

Its typical service projects are centered on “sight-preservation projects like eyeglasses for the needy and corneal transplants,” Barton said. “The recent COVID-19 pandemic has put limits on Lions activities.”

Another socially distanced project this chapter put together was for local schools to supplement their learning about the United States Constitution.

“One recent project was the Constitution Day project in which we supplied nearly 20,000 Constitution booklets to area schools for fifth grade students in their American History studies on Constitution Day, which is Sept. 17,” Barton said. l

Girl Talk connects girls, creates leaders

etween ages 8–14, girls’ confidence levels drop by 30%.

Only 21% of all girls believe they have the qualities to be a good leader.

In an effort to reverse these discouraging trends noted on its website, the national organization Girl Talk offers a curriculum to increase the self-esteem, confidence and leadership skills of teen girls.

Mountain Heights Academy, an online school based in West Jordan, hosts one of only two Girl Talk chapters in the Salt Lake Area. Last year, 47 MHA students participated. This year, 73 girls— about 35% of the middle school’s female student body—have joined.

“I think they just need connection more than anything right now,” said Sally Emett, school counselor at Mountain Heights Academy. “Having somewhere where they can connect with other girls that are going through the same thing as them, that are dealing with the same issues, is really helpful.”

Girl Talk meetings are held twice a month. In previous years, there were in-person activities and service projects.

This year, meetings are held virtually and girls keep in touch through group chats.

What makes Girl Talk unique is that the meetings are led by teenaged leaders.

These older girls, who can relate to the issues the younger girls are facing, give advice about friendship, stress management, body image and self-care.

Some of the student leaders were participants before—the MHA club is in its third year—and are now leaders in the club. The eight high school students running the program this year were nominated by faculty members and had expressed an interest in mentoring younger girls. The girls use their experiences and resources from the national Girl Talk curriculum to create presentations about gratitude, growth mindset, perseverance, goals and motivation.

“It's a little bit intimidating to go online and present a lesson that you put together to a big group of middle school girls, and to involve them and ask them questions and have them participate and deal with the technology and all of that,” Emett said. “It's a good experience for them, and it's really fun to see what they come up with and what they're getting out of it.”

loves that the club benefits all the girls.

“Not only is it benefiting those younger students, but it's also really allowing those older students to build their leadership skills too,” Andersen said. “It's just twofold, which is fantastic,” Last year, she worked with one of the group leaders who was intimidated by the idea of teaching a lesson.

“She was a little bit scared,” Andersen said. “And then she noticed that the girls were all commenting and really supporting her.” Andersen said the confi-

dence this young woman gained from her experience in Girl Talk helped her later on as she participated in a National History Day activity, which involved an interview and presentation, and as she moved on to college. l

Whether you have family members missing from around the dinner table, cancelled flights or you’re dining over Zoom, I know this year’s holiday activities may look a lot different than years past.

Thirty-something years ago, when my wife and children lived in St. Louis, we spent most of our holidays without seeing our extended family. We talked long distance on the telephone but kept it short due to cost per minute. Today’s technology has made calls like that so much easier!

This year, I’ve had to change the way I interact with my 92-year-old father. He’s navigated his way around technology better than I ever would have imagined. It has changed the way we visit. At his birthday party in September, he saw and heard all his children sing Happy Birthday from all across the country using Zoom.

The lesson from these two unique experiences in my life? We don’t let a virus stop us from spending time and sharing stories with each another.

We’ve all had to navigate our way through new experiences, new challenges, and new feelings. This year has left many of us feeling scared, confused, yet hopeful. There’s a quote from Albert Einstein that says “Life is like riding a bicycle. To keep your balance, you must keep moving.”

Einstein’s words remind me that life can be difficult sometimes, and that’s okay. In a community such as ours, there is always someone here to help. Included at the bottom of my Mayor’s Message you will see contact information should you be feeling anxiety or depression due to COVID-19.

In closing, if there’s something 2020 has taught us, it’s how much our actions can impact others. Wearing a mask, can lessen someone’s chances of becoming ill, taking in a neighbor’s garbage bin, can shorten their long to-do list, and simply reaching out to an old friend can change their bad day... into a good one.

A building that has stood on that corner for decades is coming down to make way for a Maverik gas station and convenience store. It’s the same building that has seen many tenants come and go, a building that has served tacos, tortas, pizza, and even beer.

Back in the 1950’s the building was West Jordan’s one and only Tavern - the Sunset Inn, or as many jokingly called it the “Second Ward.” As the city continued to grow, and add more LDS wards, the joke grew with it. It finally reached its point in the 1970’s as the “Fifth Ward.”

Sophie K Gibson is 79 years old. Her parents, George M Kampros and Vee Kampros, owned and worked at the Sunset Inn. Gibson remembers stopping by the tavern to drop off dinner to her father before heading home.

“That little corner has been busy,” said Gibson.

The building, along with a neighboring small restaurant and family home just west of the Sunset Inn, were originally built by Gibson’s father. Before it was known as the Sunset Inn Tavern, the building was first a gas station.

“I don’t remember the gas station because it was there before I was born,” explained Gibson. “My dad owned it with my uncle for a while and then bought my uncle out.”

From there, the Sunset Inn was born.

“The miners would stop after work, come down and have a drink and then be on their way,” said Gibson. “There weren’t many places to go and have a drink.”

Today, Gibson’s words still ring true. Years after the Sunset Inn closed, a Mexican restaurant moved in. Delgado’s still had one of the few beer licenses in the City of West Jordan.

Before this year, Gibson and her husband were solely responsible for the 2.5-acre lot that the building sits on. She said selling the property has her feeling bittersweet, as the plot of land has been in her family for decades.

“I’m glad the stress has been lifted off my shoulders,” said Gibson. “My mom’s been gone for about 22 years, my brother has also passed away, and my sister isn’t able to help. Handling the rent, finding new tenants, it gets stressful. While it is bittersweet, it is good for me and my husband.”

The demolition of the building is not going unnoticed. One West Jordan resident, Monty Young, called it “the end of an era.”

The saying ‘history repeats itself’ applies to what is happening now. The corner that once sold gas, before going on to serve beer, pizza, and tacos, is once again fueling cars in the City of West Jordan.

What to Know for When it Starts to Snow We’ve all been there before, you wake up in the morning to prepare for another day of work, you look outside, and BAM Mother Nature brought a huge snowstorm. Your driveway is covered in snow, your mailbox is covered in snow and your car, which is parked on the street, is also covered in snow. The first thing you probably want to do is climb back in bed, but before you do that… do your neighbors and city a solid: move your car off the road.

Here’s why: West Jordan City ordinance 7-3-10 prohibits parking a car, or semitrailer, on the street when it is snowing, or snow is already on the street.

The ordinance is in effect from November 1st through April 30th of the following year. If you are parked on the street during the storm you could face a violation and pay a ticket. But aside from just potentially paying up, you may be the reason your street isn’t getting plowed. While some streets CAN still be plowed with cars parked along the side, many plow drivers will wait until the street is clear to avoid damaging any cars as well as their own equipment.

There are more than 800 lane miles of streets in the city of West Jordan. The city’s plow drivers get to those streets by priority.

Priority Four: Cul-de-sacs and other dead-end streets. The city incurs proportionally more time and costs clearing snow from cul-de-sacs than on typical “uninterrupted” stretches of streets. Because of the high cost-to-benefit ratio, and lower traffic volume, cul-de-sacs and dead-end streets have the lowest priority, and will be the last areas plowed.

Something else to keep in mind; not all roads are the city’s responsibility. Some roads belong to the state which are maintained by the Utah Department of Transportation, including: • Redwood Road • Bangerter Highway • 7000 South from the Jordan River to Redwood Rd • 9000 South from the Jordan River to 5600 West • U-111 from New Bingham Highway to the Northern City border • Mountain View Corridor • New Bingham Highway from 7800 South to west of U-111

Another important thing to note; police won’t be able to ticket ALL cars parked on the street. If it’s a snowy commute they are likely responding to crashes or helping drivers who get stuck in the snow. It’s best not to bombard dispatch with a list of your neighbors’ license plate numbers, when they’re already receiving calls about potential crashes with injuries. Think two steps ahead: check the local weather, so you can move your car off the road if it’s likely going to snow.

“Criminals are often opportunists,” JC Holt, West Jordan Police Sergeant, said. “They look for things that we might overlook.”

What Sergeant Holt is talking about is putting the box from your new pricey laptop out in the open next to your garbage or recycling bins.

Don’t make it easy for criminals by leaving things out in plain view.

“Someone with the intention of burglarizing a home could be walking by, see a box out in the open and think okay cool I know what I can find in that house,” Sergeant Holt explained.

COUNCIL CORNER 2020 has been an interesting year to say the least.

Earthquakes, high winds, the pandemic, changes in travel, changes in conducting business, and changes in mingling with friends and families. The City Council truly appreciates all the many difficult tasks many of our residents are dealing with.

There has been good news in 2020 as well!

Economic Development continues to be a high priority for the City Council. The Council gave its advice and consent for the Mayor to hire Chris Pengra as the Economic Development Director. You can read more about him in last month’s West Jordan Journal.

Council Member Chad Lamb said, “Despite the challenges, it is nice to see a number of businesses investing in our city.” New commercial investments include a new Maverik, a new Big-O Tires, enhancements at Macey’s, and the Holiday Oil at the intersection of 3200 West and 7800 South. Also, 7800 South and 5600 West will see a Nielsen’s Frozen Custard among other businesses in the works. Jordan Landing looks forward to the addition of Rush Funplex and others you may have already seen.”

Council Member Kayleen Whitelock stated, “I’m excited for the growth we are seeing in large commercial developments coming to our city. Many

of you have seen the Amazon building near U-111 that added 1.5 million square feet. We also have others desiring to locate in our city. These businesses contribute to our tax base and in job opportunities.

The future is bright in West Jordan.” These businesses assist our city on many fronts.

“Even if you don’t have an alarm system, it’s okay to advertise that you do,” Sergeant Holt said. “You can get the stickers and you can get the placards from amazon and you can put them in your yard.”

The holidays in 2020 are obviously different than ever before, but one thing will likely remain the same.

People will exchange presents, and Santa will deliver wrapped gift under the tree. With all the paper and cards, and ribbons and bows some people may be left wondering… can I recycle this?

The City of West Jordan contracts with ACE Recycling and Disposal to pick up residents’ recycling.

Mercedes Anto, sustainability director at ACE, says it’s easy to get confused when it comes to recycling any time of year.

“Stick with your paper, cardboard, plastic bottles and jugs, and cans,” said Anto. “The most important thing is to make sure your recyclable products don’t become contaminated.”

Items such as paper or cardboard can become contaminated when soda from a can or bottle leaks out into the recycling bin.

“It can also happen if your bin is overflowing and it rains or snows overnight,” explained Anto. “Be sure to close the lid all the way and to rinse out bottles and cans before throwing them in.”

Over the next few weeks, you will likely have gift bags and wrapping paper covering your living room

floor – Anto says there is one easy way to determine whether any of it can safely be recycled.

“As long as the paper doesn’t have glitter, bows, or ribbons you can recycle it,” said Anto.

Officer Ponch HOW A PIECE OF CARDBOARD IS SLOWING DOWN SPEEDERS IN WEST JORDAN West Jordan Police officers can’t be everywhere at once. That’s where other forms of surveillance come in; speed bumps, radar speeds signs, and blinking lights. But not all roads in the city are armed with these items, and one West Jordan resident is taking the problem into his own hands.

David Shuman lives just off 8000 S. and Grizzly Way. Like many others, Shuman is working from home due to the Coronavirus. Because he’s been spending more time at his computer in his backyard, he’s noticed just how fast drivers are speeding down the road behind his home.

“I’ve just noticed more traffic. People are looking at their phones, eating, or doing whatever and not paying attention to how fast they’re going,” said Shuman. “These drivers weren’t slowing down even when the kids are around.”

There are three separate schools along this stretch of road; Hayden Peak Elementary, West Hills Middle, and Copper Hills High School.

“I would sit out there and watch as school was let out and cars were just flying by!” explained Shuman. “I’m seeing accidents happen in front of me, I’m seeing kids and their parents run across the street.”

That’s when Shuman came up with an idea. He’d trick drivers into slowing down, and he’d use a cardboard cutout to do it.

“We got him a name, Ponch… and we got him a Facebook page,” said Shuman. “And it worked, people slowed down.”

Unlike the Ponch from CHiPs, this cardboard Ponch works alone. But he gets the job done.

“Overall the response has been very positive. The police officers we’ve talked to say it’s been very positive for them too,” explained Shuman. “They’ve been out to patrol a few times, and we realize they can’t be everywhere. We are very pro-police on this, and we aren’t trying to upset anybody. We just want them to slow down when they come around the corner.”

Shuman is also working closely with Mayor Dirk Burton to see how to mitigate the issue of speeders on this stretch of road.

“I’ve never been in a position where I’ve needed political people,” explained Shuman. “But when you send an email to somebody because you have an issue and all of a sudden, they are on your doorstep trying to handle your issue, that is what kind of leader I want. That’s the kind of leader I want for the town that I live in. That’s why we love it here.”

Shuman and his family aren’t originally from West Jordan, but they are happy to call this city home.

“Our family loves West Jordan. We love everything about West Jordan and that’s our way of giving back to the community that we love,” said Shuman. “It’s not the police that need to police us all the time. As West Jordan residents we need to make sure that we are doing our part, following the law, and making sure everyone is safe to keep our community great.”

CHHS Paws for a Cause will serve community safely

opper Hills High School Student Body President Shayla Nham, along with presidents from other nearby high schools, met with Superintendent Anthony Godfrey to ask that their schools’ annual charity drives not be cancelled due to coronavirus concerns.

They shared with him their ideas of how their activities could be held safely.

“He wanted to hear from us, and not just to take it on his own because he knows that we care about our school so much and we care about this event,” Nham said.

Godfrey’s subsequent report to the Jordan Board of Education convinced board members to trust students and administrators to follow public safety measures as they planned their activities.

Most of the traditional activities for CHHS’s charity drive, Paws for a Cause, have required adaptations.

“We have a lot of creative minds in our government, so I’m not worried,” Nham said.

Whatever limitations or changes are necessary, students are determined to not cancel Paws for a Cause.

“This is what brings our school together and is what everyone looks forward to at Copper Hills,” Nham said.

Many of the traditional social events—

assemblies, cafeteria activities, community performances—have been adapted or replaced with socially distanced alternatives.

For example, the traditional Grizzlies Got Talent Show will be a virtual event. Students will be able to purchase the live stream and watch it from home.

A large portion of fundraising comes from the collection of donations in the school hallways. To avoid crowding and money-handling in the hallways, there will be a QR code students can with their phone to make their donation digitally and from a safe distance.

“The biggest difference this year is the restrictions we will have on going out into the community,” Scott Adamson, adviser to student government, said. “We usually hit the neighborhoods to help out, but we are going to be vigilant in not putting residents or our kids in danger.”

In past years, students canvassed neighborhoods, offering to do simple service and collect donations. They helped elderly residents put up their Christmas trees and decorate their houses. This year, if public safety recommendations allow, they hope to find ways to help with outdoor projects, such as hanging Christmas lights.

The students have also reached out to

more local businesses, such as restaurants, to host fundraising nights.

What makes CHHS’s charity drive different from other schools in the district is that they don’t give all the money they earn to just one charity.

“We actually use it to help our community,” Nham said. Every year, money collected provides Christmas gifts for 100–125 local families.

“The amount of money we make grows every year, and so the amount of families that we can shop for increases, which is amazing,” Nham said.

The rest of the money collected goes to help community members. In the past, the money has paid for funeral expenses, medical bills and medical equipment, a wig for a teacher going through chemo treatments and donations to Karie Sue Hamilton School.

Nham loves the opportunity to make her community better. As a student officer for the past three years, she has seen firsthand how much families appreciate the gifts.

“It’s just a heartfelt feeling because you realize all the work you put into it was worth it in the end,” she said.

“I have seen a lot of joyful tears over the years,” he said. “I have shed a few as well.”

WJHS MAD Jags looks different, feels the same

M

AD Jags is the annual charity drive at West Jordan High School. Normally, the month of December is filled with fundraising activities and community interaction.

Restrictions due to the pandemic threatened to cancel it this year. However, the Jordan School Board decided to trust SBOs and administrators to continue with their traditions according to safety restrictions.

“It sounds to me like the students themselves recognize the parameters, and they’re willing to restructure what they’ve done before, because they know they can’t do what they’ve done before,” board member Janice Voorhees.

WJHS Student Body President Blue Johnson has been in student government and helped plan MAD Jags for the past three years and said this year has been a challenge.

“It definitely has been weird to figure out how we can do it,” she said.

Every in-person event has an alternate plan if it needs to be switched to a virtual format or be postponed, depending on current public safety recommendations at the time of the event.

Many of the activities and tournaments will be held virtually. The annual auction will be held on Instagram @wjhs_auction.

“We just have to be very adaptable,” student government adviser Meagan Benson said. “Our student government members have been so amazing. They have thought of so many details that never had to be thought of in the past. This year, it’s been so different, but it hasn’t been different in the fact that they are trying to create that positive climate and culture for our school.”

Student body officers considered how to encourage enough participation to unify the student body, while limiting group activities and still generating enough donations to help the community.

In addition to providing Christmas gifts for local families, money raised from MAD Jags activities this year will be used to stock WJHS’s Principal’s Pantry.

“We are keeping our fundraised money and goods in house this year,” Principal Jim Birch said. “In this time of uncertainty and financial difficulties in our community, the student officers felt the need to help families in our community.”

WJHS’s Principal’s Pantry provides food for more than two dozen students every day. MAD Jags collection drives will help stock the pantry with food as well as the hygiene items and clothing that many students rely on.

“Since my sophomore year, I have been very, very passionate about Principal’s Pantry and how prevalent [the need] is,” Johnson

said. “I’m really excited that we get a greater opportunity to serve something that directly affects our school.”

Johnson said focusing on service opportunities in their own school allows students to directly see the impact of their donations.

“A lot of the activities, like Mr MAD Jags and the tournaments that we have going on—you don’t see where that money goes directly,” she said. “But if you can donate a toy or clothing and help sort them, that is something that you can see.”

Sophomore class president Eliza Coe said MAD Jags unifies the student body.

“I think the benefit of it is being able to, not only bond with the students in the process of serving, but just seeing the impact of how what we do affects people in a positive way,” she said.

And while many of the traditional activities may not look the same this year, the feelings that come from serving others will be the same.

“We are hoping to use more service-centered activities, rather than encouraging and focusing on money,” Johnson said. “We want to focus on more of the change and what we can do as a student body to make our community better.”

Afterall, Benson points out, the MAD in MAD Jags stands for “Making A Difference.”

“I am most excited about seeing our community rise together to help one another during this difficult time with COVID and also this Christmas season,” Benson said.

“Christmas is centered around service and giving, and that’s exactly what West Jordan High School is going to focus on.” l

Simulate your own baseball season with a tabletop game

D

uring game six of this year’s World Series Tampa Bay Rays manager Kevin Cash stepped onto the field with one out in the sixth inning to remove Blake Snell, the Rays’ starting pitcher. The game unraveled from that point, and the Dodgers won the championship. Cash’s managerial move sparked a firestorm of second-guessing.

Tabletop games allow you to make the decision to leave the pitcher in or take him out. Strat-o-Matic is an industry leader in these types of games.

Strat-o-Matic is based in Glen Head, New York, and produces sports simulation games. Tabletop baseball, American football, basketball and hockey simulations, along with personal computer adaptations of each, are its primary product but baseball is its most popular.

“I first ran into the game at a friend’s house when I lived in New Jersey,” Salt Lake resident Mike Bowes said. “I bought my first full Strat set in 1981. I am currently replaying the 1980 season, but I enjoy the old nostalgia players and teams like Mike Schmidt or the Garvey Dodgers teams.”

Strat baseball began in 1961 when developer Hal Richman sold the game from his basement. In the game, each athlete is represented by a player card with results tables based on dice rolls. Face-to-face and computer-based leagues have formed all around the country.

Adam Richman, the current company president, calls the pandemic a “horrendous time for our country,” but the resurgence of the game has caused a 75% increase in sales in 2020 (according to Baseball America).

“I produce content every day for my YouTube channel (Sports Time Machine),”

Bowes said. “I like to play the game solo, but playing against someone is always fun.”

The game’s playing cards are based on statistical information gathered from each season. The Major League teams then produce for game players. Using dice rolls and statistics, the game results should become accurate to actual games played. Game players can adjust lineups and matchups.

“I am a math teacher in high school,” Massachusetts resident Steve Mitchell said.

“We ran a league after school and kept the stats on the chalkboard for all of the games.”

Bowes currently plays in three leagues.

“I like to play the game all by myself,” Bowes said. “It flows really well, and I can play in under an hour.”

The new season cards are generally released around the beginning of spring training. Many game players trek to New York to commemorate the beginning of a strat season.

Player ratings are analyzed and discussed.

Some real-life major leaguers have lobbied the company to improve their card ratings.

Former Phillies player Doug Glanville sent pages of documentation to the company one year to try to influence his card to no avail.

Bob Costas, Keith Hernandez and Curt Schilling have proclaimed their love for the games. After homering in a playoff game, Lenny Dykstra said the last time he had done such a thing was in his Strat-o-Matic game.

irls wrestlers around the state are zeroed in on winning the first-ever Utah High School Activities Association-sanctioned state championship.

Copper Hills senior Alyssa Pace could take on and beat most of the boys in her wrestling weight class, so when girls wrestling became an official sport, there was some disappointment, but the excitement of starting a new team and teaching others about a sport she loves has made it all worth it.

“I have wrestled since I was in seventh grade,” Pace said. “It is fun to push me. I like drilling and working hard. I think wrestling has been a confidence booster. It has become a part of me. It is fun to be part of the wrestling family.”

Pace has been on the boys varsity team at Copper Hills for two years. This season, the UHSAA sanctioned girls wrestling. In competition, girls will no longer compete against the boys. Female athletes that wish to participate will need to join their school’s girls team.

Copper Hills has hired a girls head coach, longtime boys assistant coach Scott Pace (Alyssa’s father). In its first preseason practices, the team had as many as 15 girls participate, but coaches are expecting around 40 girls.

“It has been really good,” Scott Pace said.

“The girls like seeing there is an opportunity for them. Our mindset is that we want to take this by storm and build our little dynasty.”

In the past, there has always been a stigma with girls wrestling. Athletes have wanted to try the sport but were afraid to join because it was male-dominated.

“Now that it is all girls they are jumping at the opportunity,” Melissa Pace, Alyssa’s mother said. “A few years ago, boys would forfeit because they did not want to lose to a girl or beat a girl, but we know there will be growing pains.”

Schools in the Grizzly’s region have committed to having teams, but some have

not seen numbers to justify hiring coaches.

In each school, the team may be structured slightly differently. Copper Hills plans on running the girls team completely separate from the boys. Training and practices will be held at different times, and they have separate tournaments.

“I want to help build the name and the team for girls wrestling at Copper Hills,” Alyssa Pace said. “I want to share my love of wrestling with the girls that are coming into the team. I want this sport to be more competitive in the future. Our entire family is part of this team. I tell girls to try it out. It will be worth it.”

Copper Hills has several girls that have experience. Alyssa, her sister Brooklyn and their younger sister Maquelle have been nominated as girls wrestlers of the year in their age groups.

Brooklyn is a freshman, wrestling on the Copper Hills team, she has been ranked as high as third nationally in her weight class. Alyssa is ranked third in the state by wrestleutah.com “I expect them both to have great seasons,” Scott Pace said. “We have spent time wrestling around the country. My girls are excited to help teach these girls about a sport that they absolutely love. Building a team and family and sharing it with the girls—we are excited about it. At first, I was a little against it; I did not think that girls were supposed to wrestle, but I have realized how much they love it. They can do hard things. The same values that help boys can help these girls in this sport.”

The girls wrestling will be different “Girls are more flexible,” Scott Pace said.

“We have seen gymnasts and cheerleaders that can bend a lot differently. That makes the sport a little different than on the boys side.

I think being sanctioned will only help both sports grow in popularity. I consider myself to be a big cheerleader for these girls.” l

Lawmakers approved increase to enrollment cap at Utah Virtual Academy as more students turn to online learning during COVID-19

urray-based Utah Virtual Academy extends to students statewide, so some numbers are harder to track, according to the school’s presentation made to the Utah State Board of Education in September.

Even so, the Board’s review panel could see the vast improvement the school has made.

“The State Review Panel concluded that Utah Virtual Academy (UTVA) would have achieved above the bottom 3% threshold for a second, consecutive year and exited School Turnaround,” it was stated. “The UTVA team presented positive qualitative and/or quantitative data from the implementation of its School Turnaround Plan regarding numbers of students taking the ACT, increasing graduation rates, numbers of different classes offered, and the retention of important staff.”

The School Turnaround and Leadership Development Act, passed by the Utah Legislature in 2015, is a state initiative that identifies low-performing schools as being in the bottom 3% of schools statewide for two consecutive years. Those schools are provided outside resources and have three

years to show improved academic achievement to exit out of the turnaround status.

“The improvement we’ve made has made us a better school,” UTVA Head of School Meghan Merideth said. “We’ve set a long-term model of structure with the Utah Education Policy Center at the University of Utah and will be continuing with their support because there’s always room for improvement.”

In UTVA’s turnaround exit criteria presentation, it showed ACT participation more than doubled from 2015-16 through 2018-19, and the students’ scores have remained fairly consistent.

School officials also stated that logistics in administering the state year-end SAGE (now RISE) exam was difficult as students would need to travel to testing locations, in unfamiliar environments and some simply chose to opt out.

Furthermore, last spring’s soft closure, which directed in-person instruction to online because of the COVID-19 pandemic, postponed and canceled many statewide assessments, which are used to determine schools’ academic performance.

Staff retention also has improved, going from 82% in 2016-17 to 97% this current school year, which UTVA officials believe is less disruptive to the school environment.

According to the UTVA presentation, the top three reasons for students enrolling in the virtual school is to remove the students from bullying at traditional schools, decrease their anxiety levels and improve their health and safety.

This year, more students turned to UTVA as their educational option as an alternative to in-person education during the COVID-19 pandemic. More than 1,500 K-12 students took advantage of the opportunity to enroll at Utah Virtual Academy once the Utah legislature authorized an increased enrollment cap for the online charter school in August.

UTVA’s studentbody, at more than 3,000 this fall, is almost half economically disadvantaged and just above half credit deficient upon enrolling. The stats reveal that 48% are mobile, with several homeless or experienced homelessness, and 21% are students with disabilities, according to the statistics presented to the state board.

Since there was the disruption of many statewide assessments, the State School Board established a review board in April to evaluate schools’ data and make recommendations whether each school has demonstrated sufficient improvement to exit school turnaround status.

Schools presented responses to the Board's guiding questions: Did the school achieve above the lowest 3% threshold using the 2018-19 school accountability data/ measures? Can the school provide evidence of substantial progress and growth in addition to the data in the accountability system? Does the school have qualitative and/ or quantitative data from the implementation of its School Turnaround Plan that also demonstrates substantial improvement? l

Local author publishes book on parenting

August Spoerri was born in Switzerland in 1936.

His father died when he was 2 years old, leaving his mother to take care of him and his 13 older siblings as well as look after the family farm.

Like Mariah Carey, Christmas seems to bring out the best and the worst in people. You have some folks gathering presents, food, and cash for those down on their luck, and then you have people on video surveillance stuffing jars of sweet pickles down their pants at the grocery store.

Christmas is descending like a firebomb on families this year who have been sick, laid off or evicted. Rubbing Mediterranean Sea salt flakes into that wound, Hallmark Christmas movies are back.

Hallmark Christmas movies should come with an eye-roll rating. Two eye-rolls means a small-town doctor falls in love with a handsome (yet grumpy) big-city lawyer. Three eyerolls means a sick puppy was healed through a Christmas miracle involving an enchanted snow globe, a Nebraska blizzard and Angela Lansbury.

Not my cup of tea.

Give me “A Christmas Carol” any day.

With his black-and-white characters and punch-you-in-the-face symbolism, fans of Charles Dickens know his stories are never subtle. But you have to love a Christmas story that starts, “Marley was dead, to begin with.”

The story is about Ebenezer Scrooge and the Christmas Eve where he’s visited by spirits all night. (If I’m going to be visited by three Christmas spirits, they’d better be white wine, tequila, and Champagne. Not egg nog.

That’s the stuff of Christmas demons.)

Scrooge’s partner, Jacob Marley, is a spirit that first shows up as a brass doorknocker (like ya do) and visits Scrooge to give him

a heads-up that ghosts will be stopping by to chat. Marley is awesome. I mean, who doesn’t want to be followed around by a dead business partner who’s wrapped in the ghostly chains of his unkind existence?

Scrooge “Bah humbugs” his way through that discussion before he jumps into his distinctly creepy four-poster bed.

Soon, the Ghost of Christmas Past floats into the room, with its face shining like LED headlights. It shows the Christmas memories that shaped Scrooge through joy and heartbreak, until his soul bent like a candy cane, starting his transition to the irritable Scrooge he is now. Ebenezer is all, “Cool, cool. Can I go back to bed now?”

Then the Ghost of Christmas Present shows up (looking a lot like Jeff Bridges in “The Big Lebowski”) and shows Scrooge what his acquaintances think of him. Sort of like a Victorian version of Twitter.

Scrooge sees the people who think he’s a greedy, grumpy old man (everyone) and although Mr. Christmas Present Ghost is a jolly guy, he opens his robe to show Scrooge two emaciated children, representing Ignorance and Want. (Trump tried to deport them last Christmas.)

Scrooge is apprehensive as he waits for the final spirit, the Ghost of Christmas Future. This is my favorite part of the story. The somber, black specter appears to Scrooge and makes the hair on my knuckles stand up. I love how the spirit only communicates through pointing, like a passive-aggressive teenager.

Scrooge sees his dead body, his head-

stone, and the callous lack of sympathy from those around him. He wakes up a new man, changed into the world’s happiest old geezer, and buys a big turkey that some poor woman must prepare for dinner.

“A Christmas Carol” is a story of transformation that reminds us we’re all here to help each other. With the difficulties we’ve had this year, including Hallmark Christmas movies and Mariah Carey, it’s a good message to remember.

even years ago, Avery Edwards was born with cytomegalovirus (CMV). The virus left him with long-term challenges, including hearing impairment. At age 4 he was diagnosed with prioproception (meaning he has difficulty determining where his body is in space) and vestibular dysfunction. More recently, he received a diagnosis of autism.

“When Avery is told he has to go to the doctor he is struck with fear that sometimes we cannot get him out the door,” the family writes. “This comes from the fact that he has had six surgeries and is only 7 years old. He is also very scared to try new things because of his sensory disorders (proprioception and vestibular dysfunction). These sensory issues cause issues with balance and being able to tell where your body is in its current space.”

As his parents researched ways to help Avery, they learned the family dog, Domino, could be trained as a service dog, providing assistance with Avery’s various challenges.

Avery had already developed a strong bond with Domino. As the family began looking into local trainers that could help Domino become a service dog, they got in touch with trainer Katie Ashby of Legendary Service Dogs. Both Avery and Domino were evaluated for service work and told that they were good candidates for training. It was great news for the Edwards family—except that the training would cost $8,000, an expense not covered at all by insurance.

So in addition to her parenting responsibilities and new After Chelsey Edwards establishes the basics of obedience training with her son Avery’s service dog Domino, they’ll form a “triad team,” meaning she at-home dog-training regimen, Avery’s mom Chelsey Ed- and Avery both train Domino.
