CORONAVIRUS IS LOSING THE BATTLE AT THE BENNION LEARNING CENTER

O

ne of the Salt Lake Valley’s leading child development and day care sites is succeeding at keeping COVID-19 away from its kids, while also stepping up to assist area residents with immunization needs. The Bennion Learning Center (3337 W. 6200 S.) recently hosted a pair of no-cost immunization clinics, where 50 adults and children were vaccinated.

“We are so grateful to our community partners for helping to make our immunization days a success,” said Bennion Learning Center Director Shauna Avila. “Walgreens [Pharmacy] (5586 W. 6200 S.) staff members came to our center the first week and administered flu vaccinations to 38 people.

Then a week later, staff from the Community Nursing Services Immunization Clinic (2830 S. Redwood Road) provided other vaccinations to 12 more adults and children. This is the first time we have ever done this. There weren’t as many people as we had hoped for, but we will try it again next year.”

Avila has been director of the Bennion Learning Center since new owners Ed and Teresa Dieringer bought the business in 2008. The location is large enough to accommodate some 200 kids on its roster, and 131 on site at a time. But the coronavirus has devastated those numbers, as it has at similar day cares and learning centers across the state and nation.

“Lots of parents are now working from home and are afraid to bring their kids to places like ours,” Avila said. “Prior to COVID, we had a waiting list. But now we are only averaging about 70 kids per day. About 30% of Salt Lake Valley day care centers have gone out of business since the virus arrived.” Occasional crazy hat days are among the ways Bennion Learning Center staff members liven things up for their children. Resourceful Boy Scouts, their leaders gather for merit badge training and fun in midst of coronavirus

O

ur now half-year-plus coronavirus pandemic has ground activity at the Taylorsville-Bennion Heritage Center (1488 West 4800 South) to a virtual standstill. The historic Jones Dairy home that normally hosts community tours 10 hours each week has been reduced to just two hours (Saturdays 2 to 4 p.m.).

But the site was brought back to life for four days this summer, as Boy Scouts and their leaders from Taylorsville, Kearns and Magna made the best of the COVID-19 situation.

“We had 33 Scouts earn about 120 merit badges during the week, so it was a big success,” said Troop 117 Scoutmaster Steve Plothow. “The Scouts did not camp overnight. Instead they showed up each morning, in masks. We made it work.”

Taylorsville Boy Scout Troop 117 is one of the oldest troops in Utah, though it recently underwent a number and sponsorship change, when the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints chose to discontinue sponsoring the BSA. Plothow has been scoutmaster, through the sponsorship transition, since 2012.

All three of the troops that participated in the heritage museum camp are now sponsored by the Unified Fire Authority’s Fire-

fighter Union.

“Each morning all of the Scouts were temperature-checked and asked a series of questions to determine whether they had been exposed to the virus,” Plothow said. “We had two boys sustain heatstroke during the week, because they were not drinking enough liquids.

But we did not have any COVID cases. We were very careful because we knew if we came up with even one positive case, we would have to end the camp and quarantine everyone.”

The Scouts earned a dozen different merit badges during the four-day camp, including Archery, Communication, Emergency Preparedness, Engineering, Family Life, Geocaching, Personal Fitness, Photography, Programming, Radio, Weather and Wood Carving.

“This was the first time we ever hosted an event like this, and I think it went very well,” said Taylorsville Historic Preservation Committee Chairwoman Susan Yadeskie.

“The boys performed service projects for the museum and seemed to have a great time.”

Troop 117 has a long-standing relationship with the Taylorsville-Bennion Heritage Museum. It was holding its regular troop meetings in the dairy store just west of the historic home until the virus put an end to

that. Paying “rent” for the meeting space involved completing service projects.

“During the four-day camp, we restored an antique horse-drawn plow and also made some repairs and sanded the picket fence around the old school house,” Plothow said.

“And one day we filled nearly an entire dumpster with garbage from around the site.

The boys understood this was another important reason for us to be there.”

A couple of other highlights during the camp included a visit from Taylorsville Mayor Kristie Overson. The Scouts also performed a ceremony to retire a United States flag that had become tattered flying over Calvin Smith Elementary School.

“The boys were excited the mayor took time to visit and she sat with a bunch of them during lunch, asking them about Scouting,” Plothow said. “As for the flag retiring ceremony, that is a somber event where we explain the meaning of the flag. Then four Scouts carry the flag to a fire pit. The boys hold their scout salute until the flag is completely burned.”

The camp ended with a special court of honor where merit badges were bestowed and rank advancements recognized.

the boys had fun and enjoyed each other, which was my goal,” Plothow said. “They all made some new friends, because different troops were involved. I was excited how it came together.”

Up next for the troops this month is a planned encampment at the Utah Fire Museum in Tooele County, where the Scouts will wash fire trucks and perform a number of other service projects, to express appreciation to the firefighters’ union that sponsors them.

As for the Taylorsville-Bennion Heritage Museum, Yadeskie says they still hope to host the annual “Saturday with Santa Claus” event on Dec. 5. l

Taylorsville City Hall undergoing facelift, inside and out

A

s the $39 million Mid-Valley Performing Arts Center continues to take shape this fall—southeast of Taylorsville City Hall (2600 W. 5400 S.)— the urgency to improve and landscape the open land west of the new Salt Lake County-owned facility is becoming more acute. The race is now on to see both the arts center and the open space completed over the next few months.

This “race to the finish” is something city officials were aware of and preparing for long before coronavirus turned lives upside down.

But now on top of the outside work, the federal government has created a new deadline for the city. And Mayor Kristie Overson said this one is completely due to COVID-19.

“The city has received more than a million dollars from the federal government to fund improvements to combat

coronavirus,” Overson said. “This came as a one-time chunk of money that we must spend by the end of the year or return to the federal government. So, now, before the end of 2020, we are doing some remodeling inside city hall, in addition to the landscaping and other changes that are coming outside.”

If it sounds like a lot to get done in a short amount of time, it is. That’s why you’re glad you aren’t new Taylorsville City Engineer Ben White. Less than a year on the job—and the city’s first in-house engineer in six years—it’s White’s job to oversee this glut of projects.

“Ben and I worked together at (civil engineering firm) Forsgren (Associates Inc.) about 20 years ago, and I was always very impressed with his work,” said City Manager John Taylor. “We have kept in touch, and it seemed like the time was right earlier this year to hire an in-house city engineer. Good municipal engineers are hard to come by.”

White started with the city back in February, when the virus was still “somebody else’s problem.”

For the record, Taylor began his relationship with Taylorsville City back in 2007 as the city’s contract engineer while working for Forsgren. Later, he was hired as the city’s in-house engineer, before being named city manager in 2014. Since then, until White’s hiring, city leaders again contracted engineering services outof-house with Forsgren.

in Taylorsville,” White said. “I am enjoying this, although it has been harder [than my previous job] in some ways. The population of West Bountiful is about 7,000, compared to 62,000 in Taylorsville. But I am enjoying it and look forward to each day.”

Just a few months after White assumed his post, word came from the federal government that the “spend-it-or-lose-it” money was coming to the city. It was his job to help city officials determine how the funding could be spent most effectively, and then to secure the contractors necessary to complete the work on time.

“I started with the city a month be-

fore ‘social distancing’ became the phrase we are all familiar with now,” White said.

“Once we learned the [federal] money was coming, we discussed which areas inside city hall are most in need of improvement, to create more social distancing and a safer work environment.”

For starters, city officials have decided to make their main city hall doors, on the north and south sides of the building, “hands free.” As part of the upgrade, the entries will be retrofitted with doors that automatically open as visitors approach.

members of the public conduct business there.

“That area is for community and economic development staff and planners— an area that draws many people, checking on building permit issues and things like that,” White explained. “We are completely remodeling that area, to create more separation between employees. We’ll also use glass to create an enclosed space for the main reception area. And we will create two computer terminals where members of the public can make various requests—because so much of our work is done online now—with a staff person there to assist if needed.”

The final interior improvements initially planned include also glassing in the main reception area on the second-floor west end, where the mayor, city manager and other offices are located.

“I’m not sure what the final cost of the remodel will be but probably a couple of hundred thousand dollars,” White said.

To get the remodel design work done quickly, the city has contracted PGA&W Architects Inc. of Murray. Company owner and President Chris Pastor lived in Taylorsville about 15 years and watched all three of his children graduate from Taylorsville High School. He says his company’s history of working on projects in the city goes back a generation.

“We have done designs and schematics for both of the fire stations in Taylorsville, along with things at the senior center and in the city courtroom,” Pastor said.

“We enjoy working with Taylorsville City because the people are great to work with; they know what they want and the city is small enough that we can get answers quickly.”

The architectural designs were scheduled to be completed in early October. Hogan & Associates Construction of Centerville will complete the work. This is the same company contracted to complete the

outside improvements and landscaping.

“We actually do more projects like the inside work than what we are doing outside city hall,” said Project Manager Eddy Hogan. “When the city said they are on a tight deadline, we agreed to renegotiate our bid on the outside work to also include completing the changes they want inside.

There should be no problem getting all the inside work done by the end of the year.”

As for the outside work, at press time city officials still weren’t sure exactly how much of it would get done on the initial build, because funding was coming up short. The plan is to fill most of the open space with grass sod. But other planned amenities, as money allows, will include stone entryway walls that include cascading water, an amphitheater, restrooms, a concession area, a children’s playground, an ice-skating area, benches and sidewalks.

“To get everything completed outside city hall the construction contract is $4.6 million,” Taylor said. “But we only have $3 million for the project now, so some of the improvements may be delayed. We care confident we can get the additional funding from various agencies that assist with these kinds of projects. We are also looking into selling naming rights for some of the features, particularly the playground and skating rink.”

The official grand opening and ribbon cutting for the Mid-Valley Performing Arts Center and the other outside improvements had long been planned for this December, a full four years after county officials first announced the project. But arts center construction delays due to coronavirus have put those plans on hold.

At this time, it is not yet clear when the ribbon cutting will be held. But city officials say they are excited the changes will now also include city hall interior upgrades, designed to improve safety for both employees and the public.l

Local school districts to provide free breakfast, lunch this fall

T

he American Academy of Innovation charter school in South Jordan is joining local school districts in providing free breakfast and lunch to all enrolled students, thanks to a temporary meal waiver granted by the USDA. The USDA free meal waiver will continue to the end of December 2020 or until all funds are gone, whichever comes first. There’s no need to apply for the benefit; all students are automatically eligible. However, with most locations, children must be present to receive meals, so check with your individual school.

The new breakfast program at AAI will be offered before the bell and lunch will be served as scheduled during the school day.

Students enrolled in AAI’s online and independent study learning programs may pick up meals at the front office at designated times.

“At AAI, we strive to offer fresh housemade meals to our students,” food service director and chef David Kimball said. “We are grateful to do what we can to ease the financial burden for all of our families, particularly any who are facing difficult times.”

At nearby Jordan School District, officials are encouraging parents to continue applying for free and reduced meal eligibility so that they won’t experience a lapse in benefits because of the potential expiration of this waiver.

All Jordan District schools will serve free meals for face-to-face students in the school cafeteria. Online and at-home learners may pick up meals at specific times and locations designated by each school.

In addition, free curbside lunch and breakfast for the next morning will be available for all children 18 years old and under at Elk Ridge Middle, Joel P. Jensen Middle and South Hills Middle. Meal service at these three locations will be from 10 to 11 a.m. weekdays.

At Canyons School District, Nutrition Services Director Sebasthian Varas said this was welcome news for their communities.

“We have families who may not quali-

fy for free or reduced-price lunch, but have been financially hurt by the pandemic,” he said. “This will hopefully bring them some peace of mind and take at least one worry off their shoulders.”

Four schools—Butler Middle, Draper Park Middle, Jordan High and Midvale Middle—will make grab-and-go sack lunches and breakfasts available to remote learners and non-Canyons students. Parents or guardians may pick up these meals without having their children present, however, students are encouraged to preorder if they are enrolled online or at-home. Members of the community, who do not have students enrolled at those schools, do not need to preorder.

Granite School District Child Nutrition Director Dana Adams also welcomes the free meal service.

“There will be some challenges to navigate, but it’s such good news for our students and families,” Adams said.

Because of staffing limitations and safety measures at all schools, meals will be available only to students (both in-person and distance-learners) who are enrolled in Granite schools. Distance-learners need to arrange meal pick-up times with their individual schools.

Murray School District students, both in-person and online learners, as well as children under the age of 18, can get their free weekday meals at their local schools or at these local apartment complexes: Hunter Woods, 1111:20 a.m.; Frontgate bus stop, 11:30-11:50 a.m., and Fireclay, noon to 12:20 p.m.

Youth fast pitch team Kombat wins state title

ombat; a team from Taylorsville fast pitch, brought home the 8 and under state recreation tournament championship.

“It was a really intense game,” head coach Cassie Sandberg said. “These girls have played together for a couple of years. They are a great group of girls.

We knew this was a special group.”

Three girls were able to repeat the state championship feat of their older sisters; Maya Sandberg, Abraya Yazzie and Lyla Cowley were not to be outdone by their older sisters who won the title a few years ago.

Kombat lost only three times all season. Their championship run was pushed to the if-necessary game in the bracket when they lost to the Oquirrh Mountain Edge 12-10 but rebounded to win the title 19-16.

“It was the only age group that went to that extra game. They were playing under the lights with everyone watching it was very exciting,” Sandberg said.

The 8 and under girls softball age group is coach pitch and is the youngest division offered in girls fastpitch softball. At that age, accelerated teams are not available. This year Taylorsville had about 50 girls enrolled in the division.

The spring season was pushed back to June this year because of the pandemic. It also cut into the normal five all-star preparation tournaments that are normally held. Kombat played in Grantsville the week before the state tournament and took second place to the Edge.

“This year, because of COVID, there were not

as many teams, but to win against the best players is pretty exciting,” Sandberg said. “We started playing in June; it pushed back almost two full months. In the past, we would have had four or five tournaments to prepare, but this year we only had one. COVID delayed everything, and at times we did not know if we would even have a season, but with several restrictions and guidelines from the county we were able to pull it off.”

The state tournament included teams from West Valley, Oquirrh Mountain, Vernal, Grantsville and Roosevelt. The Taylorsville Gremlins also competed.

They lost their first two games and were eliminated.

Kombat outscored their opponents 222-114.

“For a while morale was very low,” Sandberg said. “We knew this was our last year and we wanted to make a run.”

The team was coached by Sandberg, Will Yazzie, Hollie Davis, Mike Johnson and Paige Johnson.

The players included Paislee Cooper, Lyla Cowley, Emerge Davis, Kylee Dunn, Madison Goble, Briauna Hurtado, Jessica Johnson, Kimber Johnson, Liyana Knight, Leaaliimanuu Mailo, Maya Sandberg and Abraya Yazzie.

Taylorsville fastpitch softball league is a competitive recreational league. It offers spring and fall seasons.

The 18 and under legends also took second place at the state tournament. The girls were honored at a special city council meeting earlier this month. l

West Granite Composite ‘family’ bikes its way to the top

he Utah High School Cycling League has grown immensely since its inception in 2012. The West Granite Composite team was organized recently to encompass student-athletes from several westside schools.

Mountain biking is not an official sport recognized by the Utah High School Activities Association, and because of that, they lack support from many schools. That has not stopped Granite School District students from forming a team or, as they call it, an ohana (Hawaiian for family).

“Every person on the team is important,” composite coach Rochelle Bartschi said. “Every one of our kids cheers for and makes the other team members feel like they are part of our family. We have a good range of abilities on our team.”

The team is made up of 17 riders. The high school-aged athletes come from Cyprus, Granger, Hunter, Kearns and Paradigm high schools. The team also has seven middle school-aged students from Granite School District feeder junior highs and charter schools.

In the league, many of the more established teams have about 150 riders and have large sponsorships from cycle shops and businesses. West Granite has made great strides in competing against and learning the sport but lacks aspects the larger teams have garnered because of their experience.

The team is still acquiring the necessary equipment such as trailers, bike racks and hydration packs.

“Most of the kids who come out are beginners,” Bartschi said. “We work with them on their basic skills in practice. One day a week, we train and then we go onto trails to implement the skills they have been working on. It is good to practice because we can stop and let them try obstacles again and again. It could be a rocky section or downhill trail they can do it until they feel comfortable. When they come to an obstacle, they know how to tackle it and know they can overcome. That translates into life.”

In cooperation with the National Interscholastic Cycling Association and the Utah High School Cycling League new riders are coached by certified adults and can have access to loaner bikes and equipment.

No matter the rider’s skill level they still compete. Each is placed into his or her skill level and rides against the same level riders.

“Everyone gets to play, no one is ever benched,” Bartschi said. “This takes a lot of practice. If they have a good attitude, they can do it and become a team player. At our first race, it was pretty good. All of the kids finished and that was a wonderful experience.

Every other year I have had one or two kids that weren’t able to.”

The racers have lap time limits and are

monitored for injuries and dehydration. Track officials can pull the rider if they fall behind or exhibit patterns of being unsafe.

At the first race of the season in Price, Kearns sophomore Tucker Grappendorf finished fourth in his division and landed the team’s first-ever podium finish. At the second event of the season, he placed second.

“The kids have been pouring their hearts and minds into practicing,” Bartschi said.

“They have done well at the races because they have dedicated everything they have to be successful.”

Mountain biking is not just a boys sport, either. Currently, girls represent 20% of NICA’s overall student-athlete participation. A new initiative, ‘GRiT’ (Girls Riding Together), seeks to increase the number significantly.

“This can be absolutely a girls sport,” Bartschi said. “Our first year, we only had one girl on the team; we have four this year. I feel like once they ride, they will get hooked.

They compete against other girls at their level. There are some amazing girls that have come into this sport.”

Not having a bike does not hold back its participants.

“We will find a bike,” Bartschi said.

“This year, we have had so much parent involvement. We support the riders, and it is very inclusive.” l

“These little kids need world experiences; they need to socialize; they are missing important learning opportunities,” she said.

“Sitting at home is not good for them. It makes me sad when 3- and 4-year-old kids aren’t talking, playing and laughing. They miss so much. We need to take time to teach them about the virus but also about maintaining a balance in their lives. Right now, we are teaching our kids fear.”

More than five months into the pandemic, in early September, the 20 full time and two part-time employees at the Bennion Learning Center were batting 100% against the virus. Not a single child had contracted COVID-19.

“Our kids all wear masks, and we clean the center thoroughly,” Avila said. “We check temperatures of parents and kids at drop-off every day. And parents are no longer allowed inside. We’ve stopped doing show and tell, so kids aren’t bringing toys from home. And each day when the kids arrive, they put their coats and backpacks into large individual Ziploc bags.”

Avila is comfortable enough with all of the procedures that she has no issue with one of her granddaughters working alongside her at the center.

Taylorsville community activist Lynette Wendel has known Avila for several years and was among those who volunteered during the Bennion Learning Center immunization clinics.

“Shauna reached out to me for suggestions after hearing from families telling her doctors offices were too busy and they could not get their kids’ school immunizations,” Wendel said. “Bennion Learning Center is a great Taylorsville business that serves so many kids. And the center does phenomenal community service projects for our families.

Shauna is so highly engaged in early child development. I was happy to help out.”

Bennion Learning Center serves infants and toddlers ages 0 to 5, while also operating its own kindergarten, including before-and-after care. It also operates after school programs for children ages 6 to 12.

Ever look down at your umpteenth slice of plain pizza and wonder if there’s something tastier? Bhinda Singh can relate. Upon entering a Curry Pizza restaurant, you pause momentarily to breathe in the smell of fresh-baked pizza and a wave of fresh spices.

As you make your way up to the counter, your eyes glance over the menu on the wall: it’s three pages long. As your eyes wander for a landing spot to start reading, they notice the specialty curry pizza options like the Chicken Tikka Masala, Glazed Paneer, Mushroom Goat Curry, Mango Korma, Thai Peanut Chicken Curry and the Bhinda Special. After reading through the specials, you wonder if you should trust the chef or craft your own pizza. The construction

options are tempting, as you can choose from the signature naan crust, vegan or keto crust, or a cauliflower or broccoli crust, slathered with sauces such as honey curry, tikka masala curry, makhana curry, buffalo, pesto, sweet and spicy mango, and so on. The toppings list is two long columns of offerings like chorizo, bacon, tofu, sun-dried tomatoes, roasted cauliflower, ginger, pickled jalapeño, serrano pepper, goat cheese, vegan cheese, fenugreek, almond slivers, and fresh chopped basil. But, maybe you’re not feeling adventurous today, so the classic pepperoni or supreme pizza are always an option.

After making your final, or close-to-final decision on what to order, you make your way toward the friendly pizza assemblers who have been waiting for you to soak in the menu. A quick exchange of words and they pull out a small metal plate with a freshly-rolled out naan, waiting to be topped and baked to lightly-charred perfection. A ladle of sauce is swirled evenly on the uncooked naan. As the rest of the toppings are assembled, you notice Guy Fieri’s face spray painted onto a pizza stone, a memento to Curry Pizza being featured on “Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives” on Season 29. The “Cultural Twist” episode is still airing.

As your personalized pizza is transferred from its prep tray and skillfully slid deep into

the blazing oven via a long pizza peel, you can see garlic naan breadsticks and a tray of chicken cooking next to the open flames. After finalizing the transaction, you sit at a small table, leaving the big tables for groups and admiring the outside patio space. While doing so, you notice the artwork placed carefully on the walls.

The world map made of spices is both interesting and beautiful.

Finally, you’re united with your food. Perhaps, you ordered the Bhinda Special. As you take your first bite, the balance of bold and fresh flavors from the red and green onions, ginger, garlic, and jalapeños with the more delicate flavors of cauliflower and umami-punching mushrooms bring the entire flavor profile together on the comforting curry and naan base. Or perhaps you ordered the Mango Korma. As you go in hastily for your second bite, you notice how the

curry base helps accentuate the sweetness of the candied bacon, while the butternut squash and chicken tikka lend a savory complexity that will keep any fruit-on-pizza-hater deeply satisfied.

Construction Begins on New City Center Space

Dear Friends and Neighbors, Together, we weathered another storm this past month, and this time it was a literal one.

The windstorm that hit on Sept. 8 and 9 was described as hurricane level with recorded winds of up to 99 mph.

Mayor Kristie S. Overson It toppled huge, decades-old trees and knocked out power to 180,000 northern Utah residents, including pockets of Taylorsville. Aided by utilities from as far away as Iowa and Nevada, crews from Rocky Mountain Power worked around the clock to restore power as quickly as possible. Fees also were waived at the Salt Lake Valley Landfill for tree debris, and a drop-off location was made available at a Salt Lake County Public Works Maintenance Yard.

One of the large felled trees in Taylorsville was a 50-foot pine that was more than 65 years old. When this tree blew over, it took out power lines and landed on Beechwood Road across from Cabana Park.

The live wires prevented Duane Wixson and his 83-year-old neighbor, Dick Sorensen, from leaving their homes until Rocky Mountain Power could secure the lines. To prevent anyone from going near the live wires, Duane put out cones and Taylorsville police officers put police tape around the area.

Once Rocky Mountain Power made the situation safe, Duane then got out his chainsaw and started chopping up the tree to get it out of the road. After a while, a few people also stopped to help, working until after dark to cut it into manageable pieces. Left was an enormous pile of limbs and logs that were removed by Salt Lake County Public Works with assistance from our city’s emergency manager.

I am “blown away” by how everyone in our community came together in the aftermath. Neighbors checked in on neighbors, and made sure they had what they needed and that all were safe. Our partnering agencies showed the continued dedication and commitment they are known for, resolving an emergency situation that could have been much worse.

In a year in which we have faced a viral pandemic compounded by a large earthquake that also rumbled through in March, a hurricane-force windstorm was the last thing we needed to add to the list. We joke that we’ve had enough of Year 2020. At the same time, I couldn’t be prouder.

Our Team Taylorsville, including residents, city employees, businesses and workers, has risen to the occasion once again.

We are a community that cares. We are the place where community connects. We are strong and resilient, and it’s all because of you.

The contract has been awarded and construction is under way on the new City Center space in front of City Hall. The area will tie City Hall and the adjacent Mid-Valley Performing Arts Center together into a cohesive setting featuring open space, vertical landscaping, a water wall with signage, plaza and picnic tables.

Hogan Construction is the contractor doing the work. Phases under construction include the planting of trees, bushes and lawn areas, and installation of benches, picnic pavilions, restroom building, entry water feature, arbors and a concessions area in conjunction with the restroom building.

Future phases include an outdoor stage, playground and possibly a small, collapsible ice skating rink.

Among the main goals for the City Center is the creation of a beautiful, functional and versatile space that is conducive to community gatherings and celebrations, including movies in the park, farmer’s markets, arts festivals, food festivals and outdoor performing arts.

“It will be a wonderful gathering place, with the Performing Arts Center and City Hall tied together with walkways, landscaping and green space,” said Mayor Kristie Overson. “We are very much looking forward to enjoying it at planned events and in quiet leisure.”

The Changing Season Reminds Us to Prepare for Emergencies

By Council Member Ernest Burgess With the changing of the color of the leaves comes the perfect reminder to update and change the contents of your 96-hour emergency kit. It is especially important to us as a City Council that our community is prepared as it can be.

During the time of a large-scale emergency, public safety responders and resources may become quickly overwhelmed. Government resources may not be readily available for up to four to five days after the incident.

Individuals, families and neighborhoods may need to be able to sustain themselves for this period on their own. For example, keep in mind that the emergencies and inconveniences that families will face during this time will also be faced by emergency responders.

To best keep yourself and your loved ones safe during times of uncertainty, everyone should take the time to put together an emergency kit. Although the contents may be different for everyone based on their identified needs, each kit should contain the following basic items to start.

FOOD: Store dry nonperishable packaged foods that will keep for six months to a year. Store food in your emergency kit that you will actually eat. It may be convenient to store as many canned foods as you can get your hands on. However, if you aren’t into eating specific foods (olives, tuna, tomatoes), they won’t do you much good. If you don’t like certain foods before an emergency, chances are you still won’t like them after.

Many premade kits contain food items that may be unfamiliar to many on how to prepare. Read up on the food items stored in your premade kits to ensure you

understand how they are to be consumed, and make sure your food storage is free of ingredients to which you may be allergic. Also, include the necessary utensils (can opener, portable pots).

WATER: Emergency kits should contain at least a gallon of water per person, per day, that you are without outside help. Different age groups may require more water than others, and you may require more water during the different seasons of the year. Stored water will be used to clean and disinfect your cooking supplies and cooking area, as well as for washing and cooking and consuming.

Water is classified as potable and non-potable.

Potable water means that the water is safe for you to consume where non-potable is not. Non-potable water may still be used to cool things down as well as wash away any areas that may spread disease.

Water should be stored in containers that are UV-resistant food grade plastics, that are thoroughly cleaned with hot water and soap. Do not use milk containers for water as they will break down over time.

FIRST AID: Emergency kits should be personalized and contain the medications you and your family use on a regular basis. During your routine refilling of your prescriptions, be sure to put some away in your emergency first aid kit so you will have extra on hand when you are unable to have access to your prescriptions or care provider.

Ensure that you are familiar with the contents of the first aid kit and know what supplies you have readily available to you. Be aware that many premade kits contain only a few bandages for minor scrapes and cuts.

Taylorville Welcomes Two New Businesses with Ribbon Cuttings Ribbon Cutting events were held in August to welcome two new business to the city. They are: 7-Eleven: The new store is open at 1519 W. 5400 South. They celebrated their grand opening along with city officials and representatives of ChamberWest on Aug. 11. The new 7-Eleven is owned by Taylorsville residents Cliff and Chelsie Andersen. "We are so excited to open our very first 7-Eleven store,” Cliff Andersen said. “We can't wait to serve our local community, and feel we can offer our neighbors a much-needed quick and clean convenient experience."

Cliff is a former baseball player, drafted out of high school by the Chicago Cubs, and Chelsie is a stay-at-home mom to their two daughters. In their free time, they like sharing their family fun on their YouTube channel, "Great Day to be an Andersen."

The Greek House: The family-owned restaurant is located at 2654 W. 4700 South in the Westwood Village shopping center. Their grand opening was held Aug. 26. Owner Winsten Eugien was joined for the occasion by several family members, including his mother and brother, whom he thanked for making his dream to open the Taylorsville location a reality.

The Greek House is open 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and Sunday 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Dine-in seating and take-out service (call 801-666-6742) are both available.

Project Management Team Focused on Creating New Police Department Monthly updates on the formation of the Taylorsville City Police Department will be provided on this page through July 2021.

The Project Management Team (PMT) has been quite engaged this past month – moving forward and accomplishing several tasks in anticipation of the new Taylorsville City Police Department.

In addition to the formation and adoption of a formal charter (to include timelines and benchmarks), the team has continued to make refinements on an earlier proposed budget as to initial start-up costs, as well as ongoing funding needs into the new fiscal year.

Community outreach and communication efforts were identified as one of the first priorities, with opportunities for various civic leaders (service groups, business owners, etc.) and the public at-large to provide insight as to their experience and hopes for the new department. The information obtained will aid in the establishment of a vision, mission, and value set – providing the future leadership team with a blueprint of community expectations.

In this light, key administrative and operational policies are already being identified, along with proven vendors who can potentially assist in the maintaining and training for required updates and best practices.

As with all law enforcement agencies at present, it is recognized that recruitment and retention efforts will likewise be a significant undertaking. Research as to the salaries and benefits offered by other cities and agencies has already begun. While the team understands that ‘pay’ unto itself is only one element in the enlistment of a dynamic and diverse workforce, obtaining this information will aid city leaders in deliberations as to requite funding in order to stay competitive in the marketplace.

In an effort to prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus, Salt Lake County Health Department officials are urging parents to keep their children home if they are sick.

“Unfortunately, we have had several children with fever, cough, or other COVID symptoms attend school and expose their classmates and school personnel to illness,” said Dr. Dagmar Vitek, SLCoHD medical director. “Anyone with COVID symptoms needs to isolate at home for 10 days from when symptoms began or 24 hours after their fever ends, whichever is longer.”

Utah’s COVID-19 School Manual recommends that a classroom move to all-virtual instruction if there are three cases in that classroom within 14 days; the manual recommends an entire school move to all-virtual instruction if there are 15 cases (or 10% of the student body—whichever is smaller) within 14 days.

SLCoHD also reports that numerous children in the county have attended school while they were supposed to be quarantined because they had been exposed to someone with COVID. “If we, as a community, want to continue in-person schooling, it is essential that people who are ill or have been exposed stay home until they complete their isolation or quarantine,” Dr. Vitek said.

People who have been within 6 feet of someone with COVID for 15 minutes or more should quarantine and watch for symptoms for 14 days after their last exposure to the positive person. During quarantine, they should not leave home for any reason, except when advised by a health care provider to seek medical care in person.

Health officials encourage anyone with any COVID symptom to be tested by finding a test site near them at www.coronavirus.utah.gov. Testing is widely available and there is no cost to the patient being tested.

Police Officers, Former Councilman Honored for Service Police Chief Tracy Wyant honored officers this past month for their bravery in the service they provide to Taylorsville City. The recipients of the awards presented at the City Council’s Aug. 19 meeting were: • Anthony Martinez - Precinct Chief’s Award July 2020 • Steven Ivan - July Officer of the Month Martinez was recognized for his “exemplary professionalism, patience and methodology” when responding to a domestic aggravated assault case.

Because of his hard work, charges were filed against the suspect with no additional investigation for the other detectives. “He was faced with several challenges during a difficult investigation,” Chief

Wyant said. “Through his hard work and logical problem solving, he reached a successful resolution that protected the victim from future violence.”

The selflessness of Ivan was cited in awarding him July’s Officer of the Month honor. Providing a testament to his character is the way he steps up to perform extensive investigations, writes comprehensive reports and makes tough calls, as well as helps everyone around him feel calm and comfortable, Chief Wyant said. “He is often the benchmark to which I judge other officers and their willingness and capabilities.”

Following the police awards, Det. Scott Lloyd stepped forward to help Chief Wyant recognize former City Council Member Brad Christopherson for his steadfast support in law enforcement from 2013-2020. Both Chief Wyant and Det. Lloyd stressed how indebted the UPD officers in the Taylorsville Precinct are to Christopherson’s years of unyielding service. Quoting Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Chief Wyant said, “The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.”

Taylorsville Firefighters Among Those Dispatched to Help Battle Wildfires Twelve Unified Fire Authority (UFA) personnel, including two from Taylorsville, were sent to battle the wildfires in California. The UFA also has sent a contingent of firefighters to battle the blazes raging in Oregon.

UFA crews were working just outside of Red Bluff, Calif., on the BTU Complex in California. A fire complex consists of several fires within a geographic region managed by one Incident Management team. The BTU complex has spanned approximately 30,000 acres. Specifically, Utah firefighters were working on the Elkhorn fire, the largest of the fires in the complex.

"Local crews were very happy to see our team as they were trying to make progress with just eight local Cal Fire engine crews," said UFA's Capt. Richard Rich. The UFA crew was put to work immediately, including its Type 3 and Type 6 engines.

The UFA contingency is part of a larger Wildland EMAC deployment. EMAC stands for Emergency Management Assistance Compact, to which the western states belong.

It allows states to request resources during times of emergency. Crews from neighboring cities helped fill the remainder of the request.

The two Taylorsville firefighters are: Capt. Joe Egbert, who was hired full-time for Unified Fire Authority in 2002, and has been a captain for seven years. Previously, he was a volunteer firefighter for then-Herriman Township and a member of the Salt Lake County Wildland hand crew for two years.

He has worked at Taylorsville Station 117 on A Platoon since the station was rebuilt in 2017. Around the fire station, Joe is a resident expert in heavy rescue techniques and one of its best cooks. "Fortunately for his crew, smoked ribs or brisket night is a frequent occurrence," said Capt. Rich.

Joining him was Heavy Rescue Technician Kyoshi Young, who has six years on the job and four years in the heavy rescue program. Young started in Taylorsville two years ago. He is also active as a trustee with the IAFF Local, as well as a respected member

of several committees within the UFA. Young and his wife have two daughters. "He loves to camp in his self-converted transit van, which is a spectacular home away from home," Capt. Rich said.

In addition, 48 Utah firefighters were dispatched on Sept. 11 to help with the fires in Oregon. Both deployments have had an initial commitment of 14 days but can be extended.

Taylorsville Arts Council Names Lego Art Contest Winners Congratulations to the winners of the Taylorsville Arts Council 's Lego Art Contest!

They are: Adult category, Alicia Bagsmart (castle); Youth category, Tank Tirrell (taloned bird); Child category, Spencer Morrison (end dump truck); Young Child category, Kayden Taylor (lighted creation); Honorable Mention, Landon Dearden (Performing Arts Center, under construction).

The Arts Council held the Lego Art Contest as a way to put on an arts activity while still complying with coronavirus gathering restrictions. It received more than 40 entries.

The Lego Art Contest was the last of three unique summer events; the others were a Sidewalk Art Contest and Create a COVID-19 Song Contest. Participants were asked to email the Arts Council a picture or recording of their creations to be judged.

All winners received a $30 cash award, and there were three general categories of winners: Children, ages 11 and younger; Youth, 12-18; and Adults, 19 and over.

Performing Arts Center Construction Emphasizes Dramatic Space Crews are nearing the finish line on construction of the new Mid-Valley Performing Arts Center.

The center, located southeast of City Hall, is designed to bring premiere performance and rehearsal spaces to the middle and southwest section of the valley. It was slated to open at the end of this year but the coronavirus pandemic has caused some delay in obtaining the main theater’s fixed seating. As a result, the first performance at the facility will not be held until early next year.

The venue is 70,000 square feet and includes a 400-seat proscenium theater, a 200-seat studio theater and fully functional rehearsal and reception spaces, as well as room for professional theater staff and services. Salt Lake County’s Arts & Culture Division will operate and maintain the facility, including ticketing and event management.

“We continue to mark the progress with eagerness and excitement,” said Mayor Kristie Overson. “In particular, with the glass curtain wall now built, you can really start to get a feel for how dramatic the main lobby space is going to be. We can’t wait.”

Magazine Features Taylorville Couple’s Travels to Utah WWII Sites REPRINTED WITH PERMISSION FROM VALOR MAGAZINE (MAY 2020)

By Loren R. Webb It was after watching the Rob Sibley-produced “Utah in World War II” video documentary that Russ and Nancy Price of Taylorsville decided to undertake their own adventure to document World War II sites in the Beehive State.

In spring 2018, they set out to visit as many sites as possible with WWII ties and document their travels with before-and-after photos, historical writings and personal reflections. The couple also wanted to honor those who fought on the battlefront and to pay respect to those struggling on the home front.

“Several sites caught our fancy,” Russ said. “Some were obvious and others were more obscure. Either way we were ready to see what was still out there.”

The most obvious place to start was Fort Douglas Military Museum and its nearby historic cemetery. The museum is the repository of Utah’s rich military history stretching from the fort’s Civil War beginnings to the Desert Storm era when the fort was deactivated. The museum still collects artifacts and stories from the ongoing conflicts in the Middle East.

“In our tour, we wanted to learn about WWII prisoners of war and how they came to Utah, who they were, how they lived and how they interacted with the locals,” said Russ. “I was especially interested at how they were disbursed to various camps to help with agricultural crops like sugar beets.”

The Prices contacted information centers of towns surrounding of known sites to inquire if there were any local historians or others who had information about the camps and were willing to talk to the couple. Or if any museums existed that could shed some light on the camps. After much research, they found 12 POW camps and were introduced to the Topaz Japanese Interment Camp.

Inevitably, the Prices were put in touch with local historians who shared pictures, newspaper clippings, local folklore and introduced them to individuals who had their own stories to tell. The historians were able to fill out the Prices’ itinerary with military installations and businesses located in big cities and small towns, mostly along the Wasatch Range.

The Prices attempted to explore all 12 POW camps but found several were inaccessible because they are within the boundaries of active military bases, others were marked by simple historical monuments, some have been swallowed up by time and yet, a few have their histories laid out in community museums.

At the Orem Heritage Museum, the Prices chatted with curator Ryan Madsen about both the town’s agriculture-based POW camp and the Geneva Steel Mill built by the U.S. Department of Defense in support of the war. The actual location of the POW camp is identified with just a historical marker; today, Canyon View Jr. High School occupies the spot.

In Tremonton, the couple discovered nothing remained of the POW camp; the site now houses a branch of Utah State University and the Box Elder Nursing Home. They met Roberta Fronk, then 91, a docent at the Bear River Valley Museum, who told them about the town’s “German POW camp.”

Historic Wendover Airfield was the highlight of the Prices’ adventure. They were able to take a behind-the-scenes tour offered by the Wendover Airfield Association, an organization tasked with preserving the airfield’s buildings and its history.

Taylorsville Bennion Heritage REMEMBRANCES The following article was written on Aug. 25, 1976, under the title “Grandmother’s Apron.” The author is unknown.

As I sat on the kitchen stool to prepare some string beans to put in the freezer, my mind went back to the summer days I spent at my maternal grandmother’s. It was because I nearly dumped the beans in my lap to work on them. Lap? I have no lap because I wear trousers. Grandmother always wore dresses to her mid-calf or longer, and over her dress she nearly always wore a waist apron, as long as her dress. What a handy piece of wearing apparel that apron was. As we went to the garden it might be the receptacle that carried the produce to the house; it might serve to shew flies or a stray chicken away. It could be removed and thrown around the shoulders or over the head if a sudden unexpected storm came up, and it was more apt to be used for a grandchild than for its owner.

It could, in an emergency, be used to wipe tears after a skinned knee.

It could cover a baby to protect it from the mosquitoes. If our walk took us past the place the wood was cut for the cook stove, the apron was adequate to carry the chips to the house to make a fire. Or if per chance we passed the henhouse, eggs found their way to the house in grandmother’s apron. It could comfort a nest of chicks that needed to be moved as well, or add comfort to a child that needed its encompassing warmth. If the task was none too clean, a clean apron was donned from the seemingly endless supply as soon as the house was reached. Apples from the orchard, corn and potatoes from the field or garden were often conveyed in the apron.

Today, I muse over the change in our dress, the change in our work habits.

I, too, could have a cool work area outdoors, but instead I sit on a stool in the house with a fan at my back to provide the comfort grandmother found under her tree. The beans themselves are changed; no longer are there strings that if you are careful you could pull down one side and continue around the bean. I prepared a large panful today and found not one string.

They are meatier, longer and crisper. Times change, as do people. I wonder what my grandchildren will remember about me as I remember her apron and the love and compassion she showed with its use.

Westbrook morphs into West Lake STEM Junior High

300 students are distance learners. To accommodate the increase, an entire new wing was built from portable classrooms. In addition, other portable buildings were added for a new cafeteria and locker rooms and showers.

The class size is smaller. At the old school, the average classroom size was 900 square feet. At the new school, the average size is 700 square feet. However, even with the smaller size, they were able to bring the furniture from the old school. Because of the STEM teaching methodology, students sit at tables rather than individual desks.

The old cafeteria is now the gym.

Students will not have lockers, which works well with pandemic regulations. Since students tend to gather around lockers, other schools are not using them.

Besides a traditional faculty room, a collaboration hub was built. The hub has only small desk dividers, which allows teachers from the different disciplines to discuss curriculum, teaching techniques, and classroom management among other subjects. These types of areas are becoming popular throughout the district.

“We don’t want our teachers to stay in their classrooms,” Horsley said.

As a result of the March 18 earthquake, West Lake STEM Junior High School (WLJH) located in the Granger area of West Valley City, sustained enough damage to make it unsafe for students and faculty. Weeks after the earthquake, reports of a partially collapsed wall, caved-in ceilings, and rubble scattered throughout hallways were made.

The decision to close Westbrook Elementary (3451 W. 6200 South) at the end of the school year became a serendipitous decision.

“This is a lifeboat for West Lake Junior High,” said Ben Horsley, communications director for Granite School District.

“It is a miracle how this campus has morphed from an elementary to a junior high.

It has taken a lot of work these past couple of months,” Principal Tyler Howe said.

WLJH will stay at the Westbrook site until either the old school is repaired or a new school is built. The state, which acts as the GSD insurer, has not yet decided.

Not only did Westbrook need to be remodeled to accommodate a larger student body, but also changes due to the pandemic.

Pandemic procedures

Physical distancing and guiding student movement are key pandemic prevention protocol. Just like grocery stores, there are reminders on the floor of the school to stand 6 feet apart.

Hallways are one way. The school office and administrative offices form a square in the middle of the school. Students travel around the square in one direction. However, this is only during class changes.

In addition, there are entrance doors and exit doors. For example, when students go out to the portables, they enter either on the south side or in the middle. However, they exit the hall on the north side.

In the cafeteria, students line up on the west side, but there are blue X’s for the students to stand on. Students sit between blue X’s on the table allowing for physical distancing.

If requested, teachers’ shields are available. They are a lightweight plastic shield which allows teachers to move it around the classroom if needed. There are also student shields available to separate students. While classroom tables accommodate six, there will only be three students.

The office and counselor counters are shielded with plexiglass.

On the first day of school, students were given Mustang go-bags. In the bag was a mask that needs to be worn all day except for when eating, a water bottle because water fountains are turned off, and other school supplies. Because there are no lockers, these go-bags become portable lockers.

At the end of each class period, students use a mild cleaning solution and microfiber cloth to wipe down all common touch areas.

“We have microfiber rags and cleanser.

We use two different types of sprays. This is a disinfecting sanitizing solution that is electrolyzed water. We have a higher grade for our teachers and custodial staff. This is safe for students to be able to use,” Horsley said.

Stem methodology

WLJH was designated as a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) school by the GSD Board of Education about five years ago. WLJH is the first junior high school in the district to have the STEM designation.

“We still teach the same Utah core standards, but as a staff, we’re really striving to teach that curriculum using the procedures and the philosophies that exist in the sciences,” Howe said.

The STEM methodology is about helping students make connections across all disciplines and their world. It is a hands-on collaborative approach. Students are challenged to be innovators and critical thinkers. l

feeling a bit like Rodney Dangerfield these days (assuming he’s old enough to know who that is), not getting the respect he deserves.

Thanks to extensive remodeling underway on the second floor of city hall, he’s now working out of his supply closet in the building’s basement.

“They expect the work to be done upstairs by Thanksgiving,” he said. “It’s not too bad down here.”

Gasu has been on the job since January 2018, and it goes without saying that the last six months have been his most challenging.

Since mid-March, his one-person department has distributed about 8,000 facemasks, more than 50 gallons of hand sanitizer and various other items such as gloves, gowns and thermometers.

“As organizations make requests for PPE, I get the supplies from Salt Lake County,” he said. “They have always been able to provide what I need, but sometimes there have been delays. ald Trump soon after the pandemic began last spring. The direct government payments most people received months ago were funded through the act, as were the Payroll Protection Program loans people have heard so much about. The legislation was the largest economic stimulus package in U.S. history.

Another portion of the CARES Act was $340 billion set aside for state and local governments. That portion of the massive act is funding that city hall second floor remodel— the work that relegated Gasu to the basement.

And that’s also the slice of the stimulus pie paying for the PPE he is doling out.

“I have been working through the city’s Cultural Diversity Committee to help identify groups in the city that need masks,” Gasu said. “We’ve given about 6,000 masks to various ethnic groups. The remaining 2,000 masks have gone to the police department, senior housing facilities, water district employees and visitors to our city offices.”

Twice a week, Gasu meets (via Zoom) with his counterparts from throughout the Salt Lake Valley.

“The emergency management meetings include representatives from each city in Salt Lake County, along with people from Rocky Mountain Power and other groups,” he said.

“At the start of the pandemic, we were meeting daily. Now it’s every Tuesday and Thursday. We discuss PPE distribution and other issues.”

At the moment, Gasu said one of the critical things they are addressing is how and where a coronavirus vaccine will be distributed throughout the county, once it becomes available.

Gasu is also an active member of Taylorsville City’s Public Safety Committee, where he’s earned the respect of the committee’s government liaison, Taylorsville City Councilman Dan Armstrong.

“Donnie is very conscientious and knows what he is doing,” Armstrong said. “In the end, most of the responsibility for coronavirus response is up to each of us, as individuals. We have to do all we can to keep ourselves safe. But, for what we can do—given our resources—I think the city has done a good job responding to the crisis. Donnie is leading in that effort.”

Gasu said, overall, Taylorsville is doing better than some nearby communities in holding coronavirus at bay.

“We have been doing better than some of our neighboring cities like West Jordan and West Valley,” he said. “We have an older demographic, and more of those people have been good about staying at home. It’s a busy time for emergency management, but things are improving.”

This year as the leaves changed I was reminded again how lucky we are to live in Utah where we get to experience four seasons in all their glory. Recently I had an opportunity to visit a beautiful area of our County--Butterfield Canyon--for a #BiketheButter Mountain Bike Rally.

With a gentle nudge from our mountain biking friends, we have an opportunity to take some of our Salt Lake County open space and make it more accessible. Every few years Salt Lake County conducts a countywide needs assessment and the results from both the 2012 and 2017 surveys told us that the number one priority of residents was open space and trails. This year especially, as we all found ourselves spending a little more time closer to home we also saw a marked increase in people using our parks and trails.

It’s been a decade since COVID-19 reached our shores, ushering in 45 years of hand sanitizer, remote learning and face mask protesters sporting apostrophe-addled signs like “Your an idiot” and “Parent’s against masks”.

But now it’s October. Halloween is at risk.

S*** just got real.

Nothing could be scarier than 2020, with its earthquakes and hurricane-force winds and rising COVID infection rates and elections, but Halloween isn’t just about fear. Halloween is the one day a year conservative moms can buy push-up bras and dress like lusty dog catchers, guilt free. It’s the day Snickers for breakfast and Reese’s for lunch are appropriate meals. It’s the day politically-inappropriate celebrities get tagged on social media.

But COVID changed everything. Los Angeles prohibited trick-or-treating along with haunted house venues, Halloween carnivals and other spooky activities. After a swift and furious backlash from parents who need to give their kids ONE thing to look forward to this year, the city backed down and “recommended” common sense. Like that’s a thing.

Even then, it’s gonna take a lot to scare our children anymore in 2020. They spent months locked in the house, learning fractions online and wearing face masks to the grocery store. Their stress levels are sky-high and adrenal fatigue has caused weepy breakdowns and heartbreaking acceptance.

On the bright side, COVID-19 ushered in a whole new series of costumes for the holiday, including coronavirus outfits, teachers in hazmat suits and the very funny Elsa in a plastic bubble.

I think I’ll dress up as a mail-in ballot since that seems to be the most terrifying thing in the country today. (Sidenote: Vote on Nov. 3. Vote by mail, vote in person, drop your vote off in a ballot box. I don’t

care how you vote. Crawl through a lake of spiders, a graveyard of zombies - just vote!)

The CDC issued COVID-19 risk categories, pertaining to Halloween activities. The lowest risk is a virtual festival where celebrations are held on Zoom because we just can’t get enough of Zoom, can we? (Sidenote: Has anyone investigated the connection between the coronavirus and Zoom?

Hmm??)

Moderate risk includes small gatherings where individuals stay apart from each other and wear those Halloween masks from the ‘70s because there is no way germs (or breath) will get through that thick plastic.

Higher risk activities will be your social distanced haunted houses where vampires and witches stand six feet away and snarl the horrible things they’d do if they could just get a little closer. That horrifying thing breathing down your back is the lo-

People have tried to ruin Halloween for centuries. The latest attempt was the introduction of Trunk-or-Treat, which should be banned in all 50 states for its mediocre contribution to the holiday, so I don’t think COVID will stop Halloween enthusiasts. Some people find Halloween offensive, with its glittery bats and baby werewolves. But everything is offensive this year. If something didn’t offend someone in 2020, did it really happen?

I guess we’ll see if people party safely this Halloween when COVID results start rolling in two weeks later. I’ll stand outside your hospital room with signs like, “I wish youd listened” and “Your an imbecile”.l
