ROLLERBLADING: UTAH’S NEW FAVORITE PASTIME

W

ith the closing of gyms due to COVID-19, many Utahns had to find new ways to exercise. This search brought back one 90’s favorite—inline skating, commonly known as rollerblading.

“When kids are out of school, the routine gets broken. That’s when people say, ‘Hey, I’ve been wanting to do this, let’s get into it,’” said local shop owner Eric Kraan.

Kraan and his wife Kimberly own and operate the SkateNow shop in Sugar House. They have run the shop since 2011 and the recent spike in rollerblading popularity has left them unable to meet the demands of the locals.

“There’s definitely been an increase in the last three to four years—gradually and slowly. Then it just exploded,” Kraan said.

Some might ask why rollerblades? To answer that, one might look at this year’s brief ski season.

“On the local front, we found the resurgence interest rooted in skiers who had their season shorted due to resort closures in March,” Kraan said.

Skiers turned to rollerblading to stay in shape. Inline skates activate the same balancing muscles of the lower leg that are critical for skiing, making it one of the more comparable cross training activities available.

Local school districts to provide free breakfast, lunch this fall

T

he American Academy of Innovation charter school in South Jordan is joining local school districts in providing free breakfast and lunch to all enrolled students, thanks to a temporary meal waiver granted by the USDA. The USDA free meal waiver will continue to the end of December 2020 or until all funds are gone, whichever comes first.

There’s no need to apply for the benefit; all students are automatically eligible. However, with most locations, children must be present to receive meals, so check with your individual school.

The new breakfast program at AAI will be offered before the bell and lunch will be served as scheduled during the school day.

Students enrolled in AAI’s online and independent study learning programs may pick up meals at the front office at designated times.

“At AAI, we strive to offer fresh housemade meals to our students,” food service director and chef David Kimball said. “We are grateful to do what we can to ease the financial burden for all of our families, particularly any who are facing difficult times.”

At nearby Jordan School District, officials are encouraging parents to continue applying for free and reduced meal eligibility so that they won’t experience a lapse in benefits because of the potential expiration of this waiver.

All Jordan District schools will serve free meals for face-to-face students in the school cafeteria. Online and at-home learners may pick up meals at specific times and locations designated by each school.

In addition, free curbside lunch and breakfast for the next morning will be available for all children 18 years old and under at Elk Ridge Middle, Joel P. Jensen Middle and South Hills Middle. Meal service at these three locations will be from 10 to 11 a.m.

At Canyons School District, Nutrition Services Director Sebasthian Varas said this was welcome news for their communities.

“We have families who may not qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, but have been financially hurt by the pandemic,” he said. “This will hopefully bring them some peace of mind and take at least one worry off their shoulders.”

Four schools—Butler Middle, Draper Park Middle, Jordan High and Midvale Middle—will make grab-and-go sack lunches and breakfasts available to remote learners and non-Canyons students. Parents or guardians may pick up these meals without having their children present, however, students are encouraged to preorder if they are enrolled online or at-home. Members of the community, who do not have students enrolled at those schools, do not need to preorder.

Granite School District Child Nutrition Director Dana Adams also welcomes the free meal service.

“There will be some challenges to navigate, but it’s such good news for our students and families,” Adams said.

Because of staffing limitations and safety measures at all schools, meals will be available only to students (both in-person and distance-learners) who are enrolled in Granite schools. Distance-learners need to arrange meal pick-up times with their individual schools.

Murray School District students, both in-person and online learners, as well as children under the age of 18, can get their free weekday meals at their local schools or at these local apartment complexes: Hunter Woods, 11-11:20 a.m.; Frontgate bus stop, 11:30-11:50 a.m., and Fireclay, noon to 12:20 p.m.

Light the Night event uses virtual platform to remember those affected by cancer

A

t 7 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 7, the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS) will be holding its annual Light the Night event.

The purpose of event, which under normal circumstances would take place in person, exists to bring solidarity and awareness in the Salt Lake community toward the fight against blood cancer.

This year, due to COVID-19, Light the Night will be held virtually with the structure remaining largely unchanged.

Three days before the event registrants will be given a link to log on to the virtual platform where the event will be hosted.

Light the Night will kick off with an opening ceremony where Dr. Marc Harrison, the CEO of Intermountain Healthcare, will be the honored White Lantern representative.

Other speakers, who are still to be determined, will be from different age groups and demographics to show that cancer can affect anyone.

“Our opening ceremony is all around our survivors. They come to the middle of the circle, and they take that moment as survivors together to realize that they’re not the only ones going through this journey, that there are other people that have the same side effects, that have the same challenges, that have the same worries that they do,” Aubrey Allison, the Campaign Development manager for the event, said.

After the opening ceremony participants will be able to visit the virtual circle of survivors, or the remembrance pavilion on the site to honor their loved ones.

Cancer survivors will be able to submit their stories in real time to the circle of survivors of their battle against cancer. As they enter their stories, a white lantern will pop up for each survivor, allowing the community to interact with it in an online format.

The LLS will use their three iconic lantern colors: red, white and yellow. White is held by survivors and those who battled cancer. Yellow lanterns are held by those honoring or walking in memory of somebody that they have lost. A red lantern can be held by those who are a supporter of the mission in general.

Attendees will be able to participate through augmented reality by taking a selfie of themselves holding their hand out to the side. They will be able to switch the color of lanterns that their hand is holding.

Allison recognizes that with the daily struggles of COVID-19 people can lose sight of the constant impact that cancer has on the community.

“Especially in the midst of COVID, cancer patients are still having to fight and go through treatments, and people are still getting diagnosed in the midst of a pandemic, that we are still here fighting for them, and we have not slowed down,” Allison said.

“It’s really bringing the community together, showing that everyone has some sort of connection to cancer, whether that is themselves or a friend.”

For anyone that wants to participate in the event, registration for Light the Night is free. Registrants can sign up for the event as an individual or a team and will then be given a link to donate.

This year, anyone that donates $100 will be mailed a lantern and T-shirt that they can take pictures with and show their connection to cancer.

The mission of the LLS is to find a cure for leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease and myeloma. The money raised from the event will go toward researchers within the blood cancer world. Other funds and donations of any amount made will be used to support education, resources, and financial aid for family members.

“At first I wasn’t convinced it would be a viable exercise, but once I tried it I realized how good my calves and quads felt,” Duffin said. “It’s not the exact same muscle groups, but it is definitely hitting many of the areas I like to work out for ski season.”

For Duffin, skating has become much more than a way to stay in shape—it has become a lifestyle. He has found himself going on near nightly skates on the Porter Rockwell trail, located just a quarter mile from his house. Porter Rockwell trail is an 11-mile paved trail running north and south through Draper and Sandy. SkateNow.net provides a list of trails in the Salt Lake Valley and ranks them on difficulty

for skaters.

“Something about blading on a freshly paved road brings back memories of those deep powder days in the Wasatch,” he said.

Rollerblading is not only a great form of exercise for Duffin, it is also a way to clear his mind and release the stress of a busy workday. Kraan, a lifelong skater, agrees that skating can be therapeutic.

“You never see anybody not smiling and having a good time on skates,” Kraan added.

Although most skates are currently out of stock due to manufacturing delays, skates are on the way. With a shipment arrival date set for this month, Kraan hopes to provide for this sudden increase in demand.

“Hopefully, in 2021 people are still interested and there will be plenty of skates available at that point,” Kraan said.

“Hopefully, we can get everybody rolling.” l

Sales tax numbers show large, sustained COVID-19 boost for most cities

By Justin Adams | justin.a@thecityjournals.com period any of the previous three years. The only cities that didn’t were Salt Lake City, Murray and Sandy. (Murray and Sandy trailed previous years’ numbers March-May, but rebounded in June to beat previous June numbers.)

Many cities have experienced a sustained period of increased sales tax collection throughout all four months, suggesting that there’s been more than just a two-week period of panic buying that’s kept Utah dollars flowing.

Seven of the 15 cities have stayed ahead of previous years’ numbers for all four months.

Many of them by quite a bit. Riverton’s sales tax collection is up 36% relative to its 20172019 average. West Jordan is up 26% and Holladay 22%. Five others are in the 10-20% range (West Valley City, Taylorsville, South Salt Lake, Millcreek and Cottonwood Heights).

The question is: why the big increase?

Stocking up on toilet paper in March doesn’t explain it. And the growth is more than what one would expect from regular economic expansion. So why are Utah businesses as a whole collecting more sales tax during COVID-19?

One possible reason could be that Utahns who normally would be traveling out-of-state for vacation—spending their money at Disneyland or Las Vegas or in Europe—are staying home and spending that money here instead.

his June, the City Journals featured an article about how the first sales tax reports released by the state showed early signs that COVID-19 had actually boosted sales tax collection in the month of March, relative to the same month the previous year.

Readers responded with valid feedback, pointing out that sales tax numbers for March included all the panic-buying of food and toilet paper that was going on at the time. They theorized that sales tax numbers would go down in the following months as the bulk-buying relaxed and as the County’s order to not allow dine-in eating was put in place.

Others pointed out that an increase in sales tax from year to year should be expected, as populations grow and new businesses open.

They suggested that the Journals compare 2020 sales tax numbers not just to 2019, but to previous years as well in order to provide more context to how COVID-19 is impacting our economy.

So with these two pieces of feedback, this reporter downloaded additional sales tax reports from the Utah Tax Commission for the months of March through June between the years of 2017 and 2020. What this reporter found is that COVID-19 has been a big boost for the coffers of most cities in the Salt Lake valley.

shape. They’re not reflective of the state economy as a whole. According to UtahPolicy.com, sales tax collection is up statewide by 5.9% but the state’s revenue from income taxes is down 10.1%. So while most city governments seem to be in good shape, many individuals and small businesses within those cities may not have been as fortunate. l

Highland football positioning itself for playoff seeding

hile taking COVID-19 precautions and playing in front of scaled-down crowds at home and away, the Highland football team has seen just about everything this fall.

The Rams lost some key members of last season’s team that went 8-4 and lost in the second round of the Class 5A state tournament.

The team has had its share of successes and challenges in what has been a unique season of high school football.

Highland went 2-3 in its first five games.

As of Sept. 16, the Rams were 11th out of 23 5A squads in the Ratings Percentage Index.

This ranking is based on the team’s record, opponents’ records and the records of those opponents’ opponents. Higher-ranked teams receive first-round byes and home games before the semifinals.

The Rams have seen both sides of lopsided games and had a close heartbreaker as well.

Highland fell to Salem Hills on Sept. 11, 43-10, but the team also blew past Hillcrest in the Region 6 opener on Sept. 4, 49-14. There was also a season-opening 7-6 loss to Bountiful on Aug. 14 in a defensive struggle, a 21-13 setback to Pine View on Aug. 21 and a 31-14 rout over Granger on Aug. 28.

In all of the games, Highland has tried to do what it does best: run the ball. The Rams’ offense is built around a multifaceted ground

approach where several players take turns handling the ball. In the win over Hillcrest, the Rams employed 11 different ball carriers to the tune of 305 yards and seven touchdowns. Patrick Brennan led the way with 124 yards and two touchdowns on 11 carries. Highland threw just one pass during the 35-point victory.

Against Granger, Brennan was more active as a thrower at the quarterback position.

He threw seven passes on the evening, completing a pair for 32 yards. He also carried the ball 145 times for 38 yards. The Rams tallied 170 yards rushing in the game, but the defensive and special teams played huge roles too. Highland got a score off a 37-yard punt return from Maea Giles and off an 83-yard interception return from Ashton Olevao late in the game.

Through the team’s first five games, it had two 200-yard rushers. Brennan led the way at this point with 256 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Justin Raihauti had 214 and two scores as well. Peizge Mailei was the team’s leader in touchdown during this span with three.

The Rams will conclude the regular season with a visit from Brighton on Oct. 15.

Highland girls soccer looking to make strides in challenging region

By Josh McFadden | josh@mycityjournals.com the Rams had a hard time against their talented foes. Highland managed just three goals in those losses, though the team held its own in a defeat at the hands of Brighton on Aug. 27 (4-0) and against Skyline on Sept. 10 (5-1).

Highland finishes the season Oct. 1 at home against Hillcrest, which it has defeated three straight times.

Adelyn Croft is the team’s leading scorer with five goals through the first 11 contests. Five other players have found the back of the net.

hen you’re trying to build a girls soccer program, and you’ve got to do so while facing the likes of Brighton, Olympus and Skyline, you know you have your work cut out for you.

This is what the Highland Rams are up against, but the team isn’t backing down.

The 2020 Rams equaled last year’s win total (three) with five games left on the schedule. As of Sept. 16, the team was 2-7 in league

play and 3-8 overall. The Rams compete in a challenging Region 6, which has the aforementioned three opponents along with Murray and East, which are no slouches. Highland struggled against those five foes but had its way with Cottonwood and Hillcrest.

The Rams defeated the Colts and Huskies earlier in the year, both by 4-0 margins in backto-back games Sept. 1 and Sept. 3.

In their seven league losses up to this point,

their season. For the second consecutive season, the Utah High School Activities Association is using a Ratings Percentage Index to determine playoff seeding. Every team will qualify. As of our press deadline, the Rams has the No. 22 RPI out of 29 times. Highland will play a road game to kick off the Class 5A state tournament, which gets underway Oct. 8.

Last season, Highland lost to fellow region team Murray in the first round of the playoffs. The Rams last won in the postseason in 2013 when they advanced to the Class 4A quarterfinals. l

Living in a long-term community during a pandemic is difficult for residents of senior communities. “They need the support of their families. Our LCSW and Memory Care Director Mindy Simon has been amazing! She’s kept communication going with families. She uses calls, Zoom, Skype, Facetime and sends emails to the families with pictures of their loved ones participating in activities every day,” said Natalie Bowen, executive director for the Auberge at Aspen Park.

The Auberge at Aspen Park, located at 1430 E. 4500 South, had to adapt family visits. “We wrapped one of our small outdoor patios with Plexiglas and ask both parties to wear a mask.

This way they can see each other and communicate without a device—it has worked out great,” Bowen said. The community has been COVID-free since the beginning of the pandemic.

Today’s senior communities are not the “old folks homes” of the past. “We are a high-level memory care community. Nurses and aides are here 24/7, and Dr. Fehlauer is in the community five days a week. He specializes in geriatrics, dementia, Parkinson’s, and all memory issues,” Bowen said.

The Auberge also utilizes the innovative Montessori education model. The program is called Spark, and staff encourage the natural spark within each individual. Each resident has a social role to fulfill in the community. Residents also set goals for progression and improvement. “It is about enhancing what they can do instead of what they cannot do. We identify residents’ strengths,” says Emma Schilling, health services director.

tigue. Patricia, whose mother required a greater level of care, describes the relief she felt when her mom moved to Auberge.

“All the staff made my mom’s transition smooth. She had a complete physical by an RN who showed great care for her. The administrative staff was top notch. All the paperwork, financial issues and room were set up so it was easy for us,” Patricia said.

Another resident’s daughter, Carol Delliskave, said the care her mom receives at the Auberge is “fantastic.” “My mom has been there for almost two years. The staff truly love the residents, and the residents love the staff. They keep me posted on my mom’s condition, they are available any time I have questions, and they encourage her to participate in activities,” Delliskave said.

“Auberge is more expensive than a regular assisted living facility, but you get what you pay for. The care at Auberge is so much better. Mom has been very happy, and that makes us happy,” Delliskave said.

The King’s English Bookshop hopes early holiday shopping, donations can help business stay afloat during pandemic

tah is home to many gems and the beloved King’s English Bookshop is one of them. Nestled in the heart of Sugar House, the independent bookstore has been matching books to readers since 1977.

When the COVID-19 lockdown ended and Utah Gov. Gary Herbert allowed businesses to reopen, Betsy Burton the cofounder of the store, made the tough decision to not resume in-person shopping due to the shop’s small dimensions that made social distancing impossible.

Consequently, with its paycheck protection program money spent and sinking book sales, in the fall 2020 edition of its newsletter, “The Inkslinger,” The King’s English announced that it found itself in a dire financial state.

In efforts to generate revenue and maintain operations, the store is asking community members to donate $100 a month or do their holiday shopping early.

“We are prepared to offer some pretty extraordinary personal shopping experiences, albeit over the phone, but some of our most experienced booksellers are here during the day strictly to help people choose books,” Rob Eckman, the shop’s marketing manager, said.

“In normal times we all kind of detested the idea of Christmas in October, but we’re encouraging it in September, and thinking that if we can make even as half as much as we normally would in a December that that would help buoy us for some time.”

In order to support their efforts in early holiday bookselling the store has developed a convenient method for customers to obtain their books. After ordering online, or over the phone, patrons can go to a pick-up tent at the backdoor to receive their order. Additionally, those interested in finding a new read can knock on the backdoor for support from staff.

“One of our booksellers will come out safely with masks and talk to you about the books you’re looking for, what your interests are just like we would person to person in the store, but then with that information we come back in and we’ll bring out a handful of books for you to look at and see if any of those resonate,” Eckman said.

Although Eckman admits that this COVID-friendly version of selling books does not fit customer’s preferences of having the experience of shopping in the unique environment of the store he is enthusiastic about the outpouring of support that the bookstore

has received since its request for help.

“People’s support has been tremendous,” Eckman said and described how he has received emails from around the world.

“I got a Christmas shopping list yesterday from somebody in Alaska who has never been to our store, but their sister loves our store and told her family,” Eckman said.

Support of locals readers has been important, too, as Sugar House residents have also been more than eager to help.

“On Tuesday this week there was a knock at the back door and it was a mother and a group of neighborhood kids who wanted to set up a lemonade stand on the corner as a fund-

raiser for us,” Eckman said. “They stood out there in the sun and sold lemonade until it was gone and knocked on the door and proudly gave us every penny that they made.”

As cooler weather approaches, The King’s English plans to continue to change its business model. A

ccording to a July survey by the American Alliance of Museums, some 16% of museums across the United States are in danger of closing their doors due to the financial strain of the pandemic. Even those that aren’t in immediate danger of closing are still under immense financial pressure. Utah’s museums are, sadly, no exception. The Hogle Zoo, the Living Planet Aquarium, the Tracy Aviary, Utah’s numerous dinosaur museums—all of them are under a lot of strain, and if they’re to stay open, need the public’s support.

While most museums do have endowments and financial reserves to fall back on, they’re not big enough to keep them going for very long, and closures earlier in the year have already eaten up almost all of that cushion.

Funding is particularly important, and tight, in facilities with live animals. Places like the Natural History Museum of Utah have the option of closing up completely for a while: the dinosaur bones won’t get any deader if no employees come in for weeks at a time. But zoos don’t have that option. The animals need to be fed and cared for whether visitors are coming in or not, and that makes funding disappear even faster.

The Loveland Living Planet Aquarium, the Tracy Aviary, and the Hogle Zoo all closed for around 50 days from mid-March to midMay—the high season for most zoos—and all three are still reeling from the impact.

“The Hogle Zoo has taken a major hit, there’s no doubt. We were closed for 50 days during a time of year that is critical to the financial health of the zoo. Spring is when we fill our coffers to help keep us afloat during the fall and winter when attendance declines,” said Erica Hansen, the Hogle Zoo’s public relations manager.

A lot more was lost than just ticket revenue. Spring is also a key time for many zoos’ fundraising events, most of which had to be canceled or moved online.

“We had to cancel our conservation fundraising garden party, and our education fundraiser, which raises money for camp scholarships and free nature programs,” said Patricia Dark, the Tracy Aviary’s marketing director.

“Additionally, we had dozens of weddings booked that had to be canceled. All in all we lost about $500,000.”

Keeping zoos open is important, and not just because they’re fun to visit. Zoos are crucial for wildlife conservation, both locally and abroad, and they sponsor a lot of habitat protection and breeding programs for endangered animals. The Living Planet Aquarium farms coral and uses it to bolster struggling and dying coral reefs, which are vital to marine life. The Tracy Aviary hosts and breeds several species that are extinct in the wild, such as the Guam kingfisher. Zoos are the only chance we have at introducing such species back into their native ecosystems.

volunteers each year in local and state-wide projects that help conserve birds and their habitats. Our work helps many species—from rosy-finches, owls, and hummingbirds in Utah to macaws, pelicans, and plovers in Central America,” said Dark.

To keep doing the important work, zoos need every bit of money they can get, according to Loveland Living Planet Aquarium CEO Brent Andersen. “It costs over $2 million a year just to care for all of the animals—that includes food, veterinary care, staffing, habitat maintenance, etc. The closure happening right before spring break, our busiest two months of the year, has had a tremendous negative impact on funding,” Andersen said. “The reopening has relieved some of that pressure,” but not all of it.

To make things even harder, all three zoos are currently operating at limited capacity—in the aquarium’s case, this is by design, as they have been forced to limit ticket sales in order to enforce social distancing requirements in their mostly-indoor buildings.

“We’ve created a timed ticketing system.

This online reservation system allows guests to reserve a specific day and time for their visit. This system ensures that there is always enough room for guests to make physical distancing possible,” Andersen said. It’s a system that helps keep everyone safe, but it also means they’re seeing 40% less attendance than they have in prior years, which makes things hard.

“Fewer guests means less revenue, while the cost of caring for the animals and running the facility remains.”

At the mostly outdoor Hogle Zoo and Tracy Aviary, tickets are being sold as normal, but

visitors still seem to be hesitant to return in the numbers they used to. According to Dark, the Tracy Aviary is only seeing 40% of its usual amount of visitors. The story at the Hogle Zoo is similar, even though staff are doing everything they can to make sure that visiting the zoo is as safe as possible.

“We were among the first three zoos in the country to reopen and our team worked tirelessly to make that happen,” Hansen said of Hogle Zoo. “We have hours for high-risk and elderly on Monday mornings, 8 to 10 a.m. Masks are required indoors and strongly encouraged outside, we have numerous hand sanitizer stations throughout zoo grounds, distance markers and lots of reminders for guests to take caution. We’ve had a few vocal parties on the great mask debate of 2020, but otherwise, most guests seem to be enjoying their time and are happy to have a safe place to stretch their legs.”

With this decrease in visitor revenue, there’s a fair amount of worry as to what will happen should a winter resurgence of the virus trigger a second wave of closures. Will the museums be able to survive it?

“Boy, we sure hope so,” Hansen said.

“That could be tough for us, and we’re currently counting on revenue and attendance during our popular BooLights and ZooLights events to help us out.” At BooLights and ZooLights, which occur around Halloween and Christmas respectively, the Hogle Zoo grounds are bedecked in hundreds of colorful holiday-themed lights. Both events are good family fun, and have been well attended in the past. Unfortunately, they also take place in fall and winter, which is when epidemiologists say a resur-

gence of the virus is likely.

Government aid is also a possibility. “Depending on the length of any closure, we would be seeking federal and local funding like those that were allocated through Congress in April,” Andersen said of the aquarium. This would also be an option for Utah’s other zoos.

Representatives from all the state’s museums and zoos said the public can help them to stay open. People can make a difference, through visiting them and simply donating.

“We need visitors now more than ever. Or we at least need your support. There are many ways to donate,” Hansen said.

Many museums, including the Hogle Zoo, are currently holding silent auctions, with prize packages donated by community businesses.

Some even open after regular hours on fundraiser nights: the aviary is holding $30 socially-distanced outdoor movie nights throughout September, which gives people an opportunity to explore when the sun is less intense and nocturnal birds are active. Buying annual memberships to your favorite museums functions as a donation as well as a pass to visit them often.

And, of course, there’s always the tried-andtrue simple cash donation, which can be made through most any museum’s main website.

Donations really do make a difference for museums. It sure made a difference for the Natural History Museum of Utah, whose curators were, earlier this summer, worried whether it could survive the year. But after their Fund the Future drive in June yielded nearly triple their original goal, their future is secured. With the public’s help, that same security can be given to other favorite museums. l

This year as the leaves changed I was reminded again how lucky we are to live in Utah where we get to experience four seasons in all their glory. Recently I had an opportunity to visit a beautiful area of our County--Butterfield Canyon--for a #BiketheButter Mountain Bike Rally.

With a gentle nudge from our mountain biking friends, we have an opportunity to take some of our Salt Lake County open space and make it more accessible. We have the chance to build a multiuse trail system in the southwest corner of the Salt Lake Valley and tie together Butterfield, Yellow Fork, and Rose Canyons. This exciting opportunity has been made possible with a partnership between Salt Lake County, the Bureau of Land Management, Rio Tinto, private property owners, and some dedicated

These residents have taken their passion for mountain biking and pulled the community together to raise money and speed up the timeline for a desired trail system.

This group recently raised $200,000 as a donation to begin this trail planning process.

Mountain biking is one of the fastest growing high school sports in Utah and the west side of the valley has over a thousand students participating. Developing this trail system makes these recreational opportunities available right in their backyard and will expand participation and access. The proposed trail system will link over 70 miles of trail and will provide recreational opportunities for hikers and equestrians, in addition to mountain bikers.

It will be another jewel in the open space crown of Salt Lake County.

It’s been a decade since COVID-19 reached our shores, ushering in 45 years of hand sanitizer, remote learning and face mask protesters sporting apostrophe-addled signs like “Your an idiot” and “Parent’s against masks”.

But now it’s October. Halloween is at risk.

S*** just got real.

Nothing could be scarier than 2020, with its earthquakes and hurricane-force winds and rising COVID infection rates and elections, but Halloween isn’t just about fear. Halloween is the one day a year conservative moms can buy push-up bras and dress like lusty dog catchers, guilt free. It’s the day Snickers for breakfast and Reese’s for lunch are appropriate meals. It’s the day politically-inappropriate celebrities get tagged on social media.

But COVID changed everything. Los Angeles prohibited trick-or-treating along with haunted house venues, Halloween carnivals and other spooky activities. After a swift and furious backlash from parents who need to give their kids ONE thing to look forward to this year, the city backed down and “recommended” common sense. Like that’s a thing.

Even then, it’s gonna take a lot to scare our children anymore in 2020. They spent months locked in the house, learning fractions online and wearing face masks to the grocery store. Their stress levels are sky-high and adrenal fatigue has caused weepy breakdowns and heartbreaking acceptance.

On the bright side, COVID-19 ushered in a whole new series of costumes for the holiday, including coronavirus outfits, teachers in hazmat suits and the very funny Elsa in a plastic bubble.

I think I’ll dress up as a mail-in ballot since that seems to be the most terrifying thing in the country today. (Sidenote: Vote on Nov. 3. Vote by mail, vote in person, drop your vote off in a ballot box. I don’t

care how you vote. Crawl through a lake of spiders, a graveyard of zombies - just vote!)

The CDC issued COVID-19 risk categories, pertaining to Halloween activities. The lowest risk is a virtual festival where celebrations are held on Zoom because we just can’t get enough of Zoom, can we? (Sidenote: Has anyone investigated the connection between the coronavirus and Zoom?

Hmm??)

Moderate risk includes small gatherings where individuals stay apart from each other and wear those Halloween masks from the ‘70s because there is no way germs (or breath) will get through that thick plastic.

Higher risk activities will be your social distanced haunted houses where vampires and witches stand six feet away and snarl the horrible things they’d do if they could just get a little closer. That horrifying thing breathing down your back is the lo-

cal Karen, screeching into her cellphone and looking for a manager.

Posing the highest risk are large, in-person, nomask gatherings made popular in places like Utah and Washington Counties. (Sidenote: Idiots.)

People have tried to ruin Halloween for centuries. The latest attempt was the introduction of Trunk-or-Treat, which should be banned in all 50 states for its mediocre contribution to the holiday, so I don’t think COVID will stop Halloween enthusiasts. Some people find Halloween offensive, with its glittery bats and baby werewolves. But everything is offensive this year. If something didn’t offend someone in 2020, did it really happen?

I guess we’ll see if people party safely this Halloween when COVID results start rolling in two weeks later. I’ll stand outside your hospital room with signs like, “I wish youd listened” and “Your an imbecile”.l
