aren Mowrer’s passion for writing began in her high school Spanish class and although her career as a scientist took her in a different direction, her devotion to telling stories always remained in the background.

Last year, with more time on her hands due to COVID-19, Mowrer decided that she wanted to revisit her former work and make publishing it a reality.

“My kid became a toddler and I had been reading a lot of children’s books, and I had remembered these stories that I had hung on to,” Mowrer explained. “I made them a little bit longer, sort of fleshed out the story a little bit more based on children’s books that I had been reading, put them into rhyme, and that was the bulk of the work last year is doing all of the illustrations myself.”

Mowrer’s books which are available for purchase on Amazon’s and Barnes & Noble’s website are about a giraffe named Jane who is able to turn her weaknesses into a strength by coming to terms with her clumsiness.

Originally, Mowrer intended to publish “Jane the Clumsy Giraffe” to be able to enjoy with her toddler, but overtime she wanted to make the joy of her experience available to as many children as possible.

“Each of them is kind of a funny story, but I also really tried to incorporate lessons that would be really relevant for these times, especially with bullying and self-confidence and the things that kids have to deal with especially now more than ever,” she said describing how Continued page 5 Karen Mowrer reads her books with her son. Suazo Business Center plays critical role in helping small businesses stay afloat during pandemic

T

he Suazo Business Center has served the Utah community since 2002 with a focus on empowering minorities to successfully run a business.

During the last year, the center’s mission has taken on extra significance due to the economic windfall brought on

by COVID-19.

“One of the things about how the pandemic impacted us is that we were slammed. We were absolutely slammed,” Executive Director Silvia Castro explained. “There was so much need and just being able to keep up with the demand and trying to find those resources.”

To help mitigate the impact of last year’s hardships, Comcast contributed a $17,500 grant that has allowed the Suazo Business Center to help keep the doors of 1,021 Utah small businesses open.

According to Castro, many people aren’t aware of how financially devastating COVID-19 has been to the businesses of minorities.

“Small businesses were the hardest hit. Not only were they the hardest hit, but minority businesses were even worse hit, because of the industries that they are in,” Castro said.

“The money provided the ability for us to reach out to them individually and also to provide training online for them to be able to make it and survive.”

The funding has enabled the classes that were once held in person to grow from 30 attendees to 200 attendees in a virtual format. Because of this increased support, the center has seen only three of its businesses close during COVID-19.

All of the other businesses, have fortunately managed to stay afloat.

“We talked about going digitally before, but the pandemic forced us to. This funding allowed us to make the jump and to make it quick,” Castro said.

Castro emphasized that the funding and support that local businesses receive go far beyond a certain dollar amount and have the ability to touch the fabric of the community.

“Small businesses make the backbone of every community. Whenever we work with a business it isn’t just a business—it’s the owner, it’s the family and it’s that community,” Castro said. “For us making sure that they are able to make it

and also to stabilize them, it means that not only that person but that family and other employees that come with us are able to weather that storm.”

The Suazo Business Center can be followed on Facebook in both Spanish or English for the most up-to-date information on the classes and events that it is offering. Over the past few months they have offered courses with live instruction on digital marketing, basic accounting, among many others.

From the time that Mowrer’s books were published in May and November respectively, she has continued to make others aware of her work on social media and she has seen enthusiasm and support from her readers.

For Mowrer, children’s books are a unique medium for storytelling, and they contain certain elements that make them memorable.

“Rhythm and rhyme are really important. Anything that rolls off the tongue and you can sort of build those early literary skills with is a really great feature of a children’s book. I tried in my illustration style to use really bold colors against a mostly white background because really bright contrast is especially appealing to young toddlers and babies,” Mowrer explained.

“I think if you can appreciate the story as a toddler and as a parent maybe for different reasons, that really makes a quality children’s book in my opinion, too because it works on multiple levels and hopefully you get enjoyment reading it, and your child would too.”

Although producing one’s own book can be daunting, Mowrer has practical advice for those who want to publish a book.

“I was actually a little bit surprised with how many options there are for

self-publishing. There are actually a few different platforms for doing it. Amazon is a free process and so is Barnes & Noble. I felt like those would probably have the farthest reach, so I chose those. I would say get started by doing some research,” Mowrer said.

“Depending on what your aim is in terms of distribution and reach, you might want to talk to local bookstore owners or managers about how they go about accepting self-published or local authors and decide for yourself what route you want to go about what system to publish your book,” Mowrer said, describing how requirements for books could change depending on the retailer.

Ideas for her children’s books came from the quotidian moments that Mowrer has with her toddler.

“I think that with writing children’s books a lot of things you can get inspiration from are sort of small things in everyday life that are sort of amusing that you experience.

“It doesn’t have to be something so philosophical or grand to make a good children’s book. It can be the expansion of a small idea that’s amusing,” she said.

Take care of your mental and social health during COVID

The other day I was talking with my husband and we were both commenting on how we’ve felt a bit of depression set in from this long COVID year. We all need human interaction to thrive, and with health challenges, financial pressures, political unrest, and so much uncertainty, it’s no wonder that many of us feel a little down. I wanted to share some tips from Salt Lake County’s Health Department on how to improve or maintain your mental and social health as we head into the final stretch.

Take breaks from the news and social media - It is important to stay informed, but constantly hearing about the pandemic or politics is exhausting and upsetting. Limit your news and social media intake to once a day or every other day.

Practice Mindfulness – Set aside time every day (even for five minutes) to be in the present moment. You can do this by meditating, journaling, or focusing on your breathing.

Go outside for 30 minutes every day– Bundle up and get outside. Being outdoors is a natural antidepressant as sunshine naturally increases serotonin and endorphins that boost energy and reduce pain.

Get enough sleep – Stick to a regular sleep schedule and give yourself extra wind-down time each night before bed to read, stretch, and/or meditate to ensure quality sleep.

Stay in touch – Be intentional with your connections by scheduling regular video chats, phone calls, or text messages with loved ones.

Try online exercise classes – Salt Lake County Parks and Rec are hosting online exercise classes for all activity levels. Check out the schedules at slco.org/parks-recreation.

Take Virtual Tours with loved ones – The Utah Hogle Zoo, Utah Museum of Contemporary Art, The Leonardo, and the Tracy Aviary all offer virtual experiences to enjoy with family and friends.

After reviewing this list, I have to admit that I need to do better on my sleep habits. And keeping my cell phone next to my bed is probably not helpful. One thing we did this past summer is welcomed our first pet (fish excluded) into our family. Ripley, our mini goldendoodle puppy, has forced us out for walks every day, and she’s kept life interesting during the pandemic. Some of my favorite memories have been Zoom calls with the entire Winder or Newton extended family so we could catch up and hear how everyone was doing.

This pandemic will only break down our mental health and friendships if we let it, so take active steps to stay engaged, integrate healthy behaviors, and connect with our loved ones. Fostering saves lives in more ways than one

nimal shelters and rescues around the country have reported an increase of people fostering animals during the pandemic.

Fostering provides room for shelters to take in more animals and helps place the animal in a well-fit forever home.

Christelle Del Prete works for Best Friends Animal Society with their sanctuary in Kanab and shelters and networks around the country, including their Best Friends Lifesaving Center in Sugar House. “Pets thrive in homes, not shelters,” she said. “And it’s a beautiful thing when communities come together to care for their homeless animals as so many people have done during the pandemic.”

Even nearly one year into the pandemic, many people still find themselves working or going to school fully or partially remotely, so this increase in time at home certainly is a contributing factor to both increases in adoptions and fostering. For the foster family of a 9-month-old mixed breed dog, Hugh, a medical foster from Salt Lake County Animal Services, this was the case with all three members of the family working or attending school at least partially remotely.

Hugh came to Salt Lake County Animal Services as a stray with a hip injury that he had “for a good amount of time,” and required surgery. After the surgery that the shelter provided,

Hugh needed to receive physical therapy, time to heal, and encouragement to use his back leg again, so he was placed in a foster home where they could make this commitment.

In addition to helping Hugh heal, his foster family helped to further determine information a potential adopter might be interested in, such as was he good with other dogs, good with children, afraid of men or people in general, good with cats, and so on. Also how well trained he was, how well he did riding in the car, how well he walked on a leash, how well he did in a crate both during the day and at night, and if he had any signs of separation anxiety.

In Hugh’s case, he seemed to do well with everyone and everything, which surprised one of his fosters, Matt Ackley of Sandy. “I had wrongly assumed since he was a stray that he would require a lot more behavioral training, but he truly is an amazing dog, especially considering his circumstances and young age.”

Since Hugh made tremendous progress in his recovery and proved to be a great example of how resilient and loving animals can still be even when humans initially fail them, he was able to meet with a potential adopter ahead of schedule. When it was deemed a good fit, the adoptive family agreed to continue his therapy, and he went to his new forever home after only

three weeks post-surgery and with his foster.

Ackley said that one concern he had about fostering was that their child, a second-grader, would get too attached especially because she was one of the main caretakers of Hugh, and they developed a quick and close bond, but it helped that she got to meet the new adoptive family that included two young girls around her age. She knew upon meeting them that they would continue to love and take care of Hugh like she did.

“Because more and more people are opening their hearts and homes to homeless pets, I truly believe we can put an end to the unnecessary killing of cats and dogs in our country’s shelters and begin to celebrate all the precious lives we’ve saved,” Del Prete said.

Bee-coming the difference to save pollinators

ative pollinator populations are in decline and a team of high school students is enlisting the public’s help to save bees, butterflies and other natural pollinators.

“It’s an ever-growing problem that just needed a solution to help the pollinator,” Kyana Trane said. “We’re trying to get people more aware that they’re important and that they’re not as scary as they may seem.”

Kyana, her sister Donna, Emma Davis, Lowell Saign, Kate Watson and Zachary Watson have been studying the plight of pollinators over the past four years as part of various school projects at Mountain Heights Academy, which they attend virtually.

The team is now focused on educational outreach and providing resources to encourage community members to be part of their project, which they’ve titled “Bee-coming the Difference.”

These high school students developed an elementary school curriculum that clears up myths and misinformation about bees, explains their important role and enlists kids to help protect them. They provide schools with a bucket of flowers for the school yard and a packet of seeds for each child to plant at home to make bees feel welcome.

wildflowers and garden plants that attract pollinating insects. According to the data they’ve collected, this simple gesture can have a positive effect on pollinator populations. Last year, each of the students planted a home garden and grew wildflowers in their yard. Because MHA is an online school, team members live in different areas—from Sandy to American

“The team collected a bunch of data over the summer about different pollinators that they found in the different gardens,” said MHA science teacher and team coach Amy Pace. “So, we have data about the number and

the types of all the different pollinators for both types of environments, urban and rural.”

Donna and Kyana, who live in an agricultural area of Great Basin, collected data on their family’s farm.

“We usually grow alfalfa, so we’ll see tons of pollinators there that help our crop,” Donna said.

Their efforts on the project inspired their family to open a conservation on their farm to protect pollinators. While that is a great outcome of the project, Pace insists that even a small flower patch can make a difference.

“Everybody, whether you’re in a rural area or an urban area, can do your part to encourage native pollinators, just in your yard or in your neighborhood,” she said.

“It doesn’t require a huge effort to just have some flowers.”

The team created a website at science86.wixsite.com/bee-coming, to explain their project and solutions. There are links to the school curriculum, information about what plants will attract certain pollinators and a data log where community members can contribute their own data to help track pollinator populations.

The website also provides a file for printing a 3D nesting box, which the team is encouraging community members to print and place around their homes and businesses to provide a place for endangered pollinators to nest.

This winter, the students experimented with various building materials to make nesting boxes with different sized holes for pollinators to burrow in. They created several designs but decided the 3D printed design is the simplest way for anyone with access to a 3D printer, commonly available at schools and public libraries, to quickly and easily print a box for their yard.

“It’s as simple as just hanging up this little native pollinator house with little holes in it, that the bees can go in,” Pace said.

“That provides a huge resource for the bees, to be able to have a place to live and to make it over the winter, because without those homes they die.”

Donna believes the more people who are aware of the problems and solutions affecting pollinators, the more of a difference they can make to their survival.

“If a lot of people are really willing just to simply plant flowers or make a nesting box or just reduce the use of pesticides or the threats to pollinators and just, ultimately, be aware of what we can do to help, they can survive,” Donna said.

The students submitted their project to the Samsung Solve for Tomorrow Contest, a nationwide competition that challenges students and their teachers to creatively use STEM skills to address a challenge in their community. They were chosen as one of 75 semifinalist teams to receive $15,000 and a Samsung Galaxy Note20.

Team coach Lora Gibbons said MHA has always supported students entering these types of contests, even before it was profitable. When their teams do earn award money, it is invested back into the program. The 3D printers used to print nesting boxes for this year’s project were purchased with the winnings of the school team that was a finalist in last year’s Samsung competition.

“When we receive funds, it allows us to beef up our programs, and it allows us to get supplies that then continue to allow students to be active participants,” Gibbons said. “We pride ourselves on providing opportunities for our students to have in-action opportunities, where they get to be active participants in solving a problem.” l

rofessional soccer player Alex Kimball, who returned to her Salt Lake roots as a member of the Utah Royals, headlines a new six-week online training program that will begin March 15. Ultimate Virtual Soccer Training for Female Athletes is aimed at training young female soccer players, ages 13 to 17, in the skills and knowledge needed to improve their performance. The first week is being offered for free to give those interested a glimpse of the program.

“We are so excited for this program,” said Utah-based Sport Ready founder Robin Cecil, a physical therapist of 25 years.

“To have a strategic advantage, one must train all aspects of the game and be available to train. This course provides a holistic approach that includes the soccer specific and physical aspects of training, along with other aspects, such as core values, and how behaviors affect an athlete’s performance.”

Kimball, who splits time living and training in the Salt Lake area and North Carolina where she played collegiately for the storied Tar Heels program, said she is excited to share her experiences with younger players. “We’re going to educate and help you train yourself in ways that you’ve never probably learned before,” she said. “I wish I knew then what I know now.”

Cecil said the program will give a comprehensive outlook and “some real takeaways” to educate youth athletes and empower them to know what to do to take care of their bodies.

“We’re not trying to take away from club soccer, just enhancing their knowledge base and overall experience to play the sport as long as they can and in the safest way possible,” she said.

Other professional soccer players, including 2019 FIFA World Cup player Jessica McDonald, Manchester United player Alesia Russo along with former BYU player Alyssa Jefferson will also be featured in the training.

The online training course will be also be taught by other sports professionals, including RSL nutritionist Michelle Meinking and sports endocrinologist Nicki Keay who has worked with elite athletes for more than two decades.

The focus of the program will be on learning what type of training and recovery to do; in what season of play, and how much; strategies to train mental strength and improve well-being; proper nutrition; tools to help you communicate effectively with coaches and parents; increasing awareness of female physiology; learning

how to listen to your body; and decreasing injury risk. There will also be weekly competitions and interactive activities.

“Our staff understands what it takes to make it to the top and can guide athletes in their journey,” Cecil said. “With our expertise, our hope is to give every female soccer player an equal playing field and provide a virtual conduit to sustained development.”

Kimball will lead athletes through training drills while athletes will additionally be involved in live question and answer sessions, among other aspects of the program. The training will take about one hour per day, four to five days a week, depending on the individual schedule of each participant.

The cost of the online training is $199.

fter the government announced its second stimulus payment, people eagerly awaited their funds. Most got them as paper checks or direct bank deposits, but others were sent stimulus prepaid debit cards in the mail, leading them to wonder if they were a scam.

“We heard from many people through emails and calls. Usually when you get ‘free money’ in the mail, it’s a scam. I’m glad people are cautious, but this time it just happened to be real,” said Britta Clark, communications director for the Better Business Bureau of Northern Nevada and Utah.

Clark’s department released a statement on Jan. 26 to get the word out that the pre-loaded debit cards were legitimate and people should not throw them away.

Clark thinks the confusion happened in part because payments were staggered and came throughout January. The different payment formats added to the confusion.

“Please note that the form of payment for the second mailed EIP may be different than for the first mailed EIP. Some people who received a paper check last time might receive a debit card this time, and some people who received a debit card last time may receive a paper check,” Clark got reports of people throwing their envelopes away (then retrieving them) or letting them pile up for days with the junk mail. Some said it looked promotional instead of official. Others were suspicious of the plain white envelope, and the generic sounding “Economic Stimulus” or “MetaBank.”

“The government told us what to look for on a legitimate card. They would come in a white envelope with the U.S. Treasury seal, there would be a welcome kit, Visa would be on the front of the card, and the issuing bank, MetaBank, would be on the back,” Clark said.

“Something from the government should have information about a reliable

website so you can research it. There should be a number you can call if you have questions and some kind of official seal.

“You can also do a Google search to see if any news agencies have reported on it or if the government has issued any statements.

And of course you can call us at 801-8926009,” Clark said.

Ty Nielsen of Bluffdale did just that.

Nielsen got his debit card in the mail on a Friday afternoon. The BBB was closed, so he left a message and submitted a BBB scam tracker report.

“I was watching for a paper check because that’s what I got last spring. I don’t think this form of payment was communicated very well, so that raised some red flags,” Nielsen said.

Nielsen reached out to local news stations and was interviewed by Matt Gephardt of KSL to inform people about the debit cards.

“I’ve seen a lot of scams on Facebook and we all get those credit card offers in the mail, so that’s what I thought this was. The BBB returned my phone call, and when I took the card to the credit union they told me it was real,” Nielsen said.

Once recipients confirm the card is legitimate, they must activate it so the funds are accessible.

“Once the card has been verified, you should activate it by calling the number provided, set a PIN number, sign the card, keep it in a safe place and don’t share the information on the card with anyone,” Clark said.

Clark also said to watch out for scammers who call after the fact, asking for information about your debit card. “We wouldn’t be surprised to see scams where people try to get you to give them your card information so they can take a piece of that stimulus.”

Anyone who threw away their card thinking it was a scam or junk mail can call 1-800-240-8100 to report the card as lost or stolen.

Like a mother in a Disney movie, my cell phone died inexplicably. Well, not inexplicably. I dropped it in the toilet.

I was wearing jeans for the first time in seven months and had the phone in my back pocket when it promptly fell into the commode. My phone, not my back pocket.

There’s a universal response when you drop your phone in liquid; you reach in and grab the damn thing. It could be submerged in molten lava or boiling oil; you will instinctively reach for the phone at the expense of ever using your hand again.

Snatching it up, I screamed several unprintable words and resorted to 15 minutes of “No, no, no, no, no!” I shook my phone, blew in it, prayed over it and dashed home to dump it in a bowl of rice. (A robot on Mars can send information to NASA but I have to submerge my phone in rice because it got wet.)

I thought, this would make a great Instagram post and frantically looked for my phone so I could take a picture of my phone sitting in a bowl of rice.

But I was phoneless. I reached for my phone nonstop. I absently grabbed the TV remote, trying to scroll through Tik Tok. I picked up my computer mouse to check the time. I kept patting my leggings where my cell phone used to be, frisking myself like some weird felon.

aren Mowrer’s passion for writing began in her high school Spanish class and although her career as a scientist took her in a different direction, her devotion to telling stories always remained in the background.

Last year, with more time on her hands due to COVID-19, Mowrer decided that she wanted to revisit her former work and make publishing it a reality.

“My kid became a toddler and I had been reading a lot of children’s books, and I had remembered these stories that I had hung on to,” Mowrer explained. “I made them a little bit longer, sort of fleshed out the story a little bit more based on children’s books that I had been reading, put them into rhyme, and that was the bulk of the work last year is doing all of the illustrations myself.”

Mowrer’s books which are available for purchase on Amazon’s and Barnes & Noble’s website are about a giraffe named Jane who is able to turn her weaknesses into a strength by coming to terms with her clumsiness.

Originally, Mowrer intended to publish “Jane the Clumsy Giraffe” to be able to enjoy with her toddler, but overtime she wanted to make the joy of her experience available to as many children as possible.

“Each of them is kind of a funny story, but I also really tried to incorporate lessons that would be really relevant for these times, especially with bullying and self-confidence and the things that kids have to deal with especially now more than ever,” she said describing how Continued page 5 Karen Mowrer reads her books with her son.
