FOR A NEW SUGAR HOUSE BOYS & GIRLS CLUB

T

he corner of 900 East and Sugarmont Drive (2225 South) has been in disrepair for decades. The Boys & Girls Club of Salt Lake and adjacent Fairmont Park tennis courts that occupy this pocket of Sugar House have been there since the late 1960s. The area around the community building, like much of the neighborhood, has seen exponential growth with S-Line TRAX service and new apartments built in the past decade.

It has been the wish of residents and community leaders for some time to upgrade this piece of Sugar House as well.

This past summer, the city sent out an online survey to Sugar House residents, asking them what they’d like to see happen to this area. A community garden, a better and expanded Boys & Girls Club, and more outdoor public space were the key components most wanted to see happen. The majority made it clear they do not want any more housing or increased traffic right there.

In November, an exciting new possibility for the area was announced. Real Salt Lake wants to give Sugar House an amazing gift. The professional soccer team and its charitable organization, RSL Foundation, want to completely rebuild the existing building and surrounding parking lot and those eyesore tennis courts. The organization and Salt Lake City mayor’s office and city council have been talking about the idea for a while now. They originally intended to just rebuild the tennis courts, but realized that the community wants more.

In November, they finally shared the exciting proposal to the public.

meeting on Nov. 6. “We are Real Salt Lake, not Real Sandy or Real Herriman. Nick Rimando, who is retired now, has a son that attends this Boys & Girls Club. I have children that went there. We want to give back to the community.”

The idea is to build a brand new Boys & Girls Club facility before tearing down the existing one. This building would be

roughly 27,000 square feet in size. In comparison, the current club is roughly 18,000 square feet. No children would be displaced or relocated to other clubs in the city as they wouldn’t close the current one until the new one is fully complete.

U of U Health opens the doors on new Sugar House Health Center

I

t’s been years in the making. On the corner of 1300 East and just to the north of I-80 westbound, a new University of Utah Health Clinic has taken shape. Commuters and neighbors have seen the area go from a Shopko and adjacent parking lot, to a giant hole in the ground, to redeveloped streets and new structures. One of the core flagship buildings in this area is the University of Utah Health Sugar House Health Center, which opened its doors to patients and the community in November.

A grand ribbon-cutting ceremony and public open house took place on Nov. 14.

Some patients had started using the center on Nov. 4, but this was a chance for everyone to see what was built. Residents from the neighborhood were invited to come see the new center and mingle with the staff. There was also family entertainment with live music and a magician, and mini basketballs were given away.

“Isn’t it nice?” U Health employee Carrie Sherbesman asked. She is a medical assistant for the urology department, having come over from the main U Hospital in October. “It still has that new car smell.”

Sherbesman is excited to be working in the new building and to be closer to her home in Holladay. She was answering questions and showing visitors her department and floor layout. Some of the features highlighted include private rooms and consultation areas designed for more privacy and less HPAA violations, and staff break rooms that have views of the mountain range or valley.

The Sugar House Health Center has five floors and more than 170,000 square feet of care space. It greatly increases the services that the old neighborhood health clinic did not have. Now Sugar House and surrounding area residents won’t have to travel to the University of Utah to receive the care they are

used to. Plenty of parking is available, and childcare services are offered at the site as well. Like many places in the neighborhood, the Health Center is a short distance from the UTA TRAX S-line and expanded route 21 bus route.

The new building looks and feels modern. There’s not a lot of the University of Utah red, but more neutral tones of grays and blues. Large photographs and artwork of Utah’s natural landscapes and scenery are hung throughout. In every area they could, large windows were chosen to allow for views of the growing Sugar House neighborhood and the Salt Lake valley. On the top fifth floor is a big area for Rehabilitation Services.

As the patients receive care, they are treated with beautiful views and an abundance of

natural light.

On the other four floors are various departments and services. The health center was designed to be a one stop shop for patients. The first floor has a pharmacy and urgent care, along with radiology and radiation oncology departments. Women’s health, infusion, and medical oncology make up the second floor. The third level has family practice, pediatrics and internal medicine. There is a mix of departments and specialty services on the fourth and fifth levels, including hematology, cardiology, rheumatology and dermatology. ARUP Laboratories, a national pathology reference clinic, also has a small wing on the top level.

Clay art with a practical touch at holiday sale

rt can be beautiful and practical at the same time.

Proof of this can be found at the 20th annual Clay Arts Utah Holiday Sale, set for Nov. 29 and 30 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Sugar House Park Garden Center (1602 E. 2100 South). The event features more than two dozen clay artists who will be on hand showing their work, ranging from sculptures to bowls and mugs.

“It’s a good way to get your Christmas shopping all done in one place,” said Alyssa Bray, acting president of the organization.

Clay Arts Utah includes a variety of clay-based artists, many of whom will show their work at the event. The organization limits membership only by the medium, not the type of work that’s produced.

“When you take a substance, and create something new out of it, that is art,” Bray said. “Within the bounds of physics, you can make pretty much anything you want out of clay.”

Some pieces straddle the balance between fancy and functional, such as the elephant mugs by Lara Carroll.

“She sculpts the legs, the handle is an elephant trunk, and you can put coffee in it,” Bray said.

Even more functional pieces, such as bowls and cups, can have an artistic touch.

“Their pots are unique, and the way they use their glazes are unique,” she said.

Community is the focus behind Clay Arts Utah, which is a nonprofit collective dedicated to the education and advancement of clay arts. In practice, it’s a source for clay artists across the state to learn from each other and work together on larger projects.

“A group of potters established it as a way to build community before social media

really took off,” Bray said.

During her time as president, she’s worked to expand that community even further.

“My goal has always been to build the community more statewide,” she said. “Salt Lake is a big hub, USU has a prestigious ceramics program, Moab and St. George have some well-known artists, but there are all these potters in these little towns in between.”

They also work to give back to the wider community. Clay Arts Utah has long been involved with Empty Bowls, a summer fundraiser that provides meals for the homeless.

Artists make handmade bowls, then sell them at the event. All proceeds go to local organizations such as St. Vincent de Paul Parish, which runs a dining hall open to anyone in need of a hot meal.

In order to make sure they have plenty of bowls to sell, Clay Arts Utah will sometimes hold events they refer to as Bowl-A-Thons.

“We’ll get a studio that donates some time, and we’ll have artists who come in and just make a ton of bowls,” Bray said. “We had an artist who made 100 bowls last year, and it all went to charity.”

They also offer educational opportunities for anyone interested in expanding their artistic horizons. They will sometimes bring in national clay artists to hold special workshops that help share their skills with local artists.

“We’re trying to support skills and education by bringing in artists that might not be here without our support,” Bray said.

They also hold free two-hour workshops that focus on individual techniques. Though the workshops have finished for a year, new schedules will be posted online at www.clayartsutah.com.

“That was something new that we tried this year, and we’ve already made plans to do it next year,” she said.

For now, the holiday sale is a way to both support local artists and get a sample of everything clay arts can do.

“Give a gift to someone you love, made by someone who loves what they do,” she said. “Hopefully everyone knows that, when you buy local, you’re better supporting the community.” l

Sugar House Art Walk brings local businesses, artists together

ugar House wants to show off its art.

Residents can look at the area’s newest creations during the upcoming Sugar House Art Walk, set for Dec. 13 from 6-9 p.m. at locations around the city. The event highlights some of the newest local art found everywhere from galleries and outside installations to local office buildings and restaurants. The event is free, and some of the artists will be on hand to talk about their work.

“It’s a great community event,” said Laurie Bray, who organizes the walks. “It brings people out.”

Unlike other art walks, the offices, restaurants, and wellness centers are an important part of the Sugar House Art Walks.

Bray said that one of the main goals of the walk is to get local artists into local businesses, a partnership that ends up benefitting everyone.

“It gets people to come into Sugar House and go into the businesses,” she said. “Sugar House is developing at lightning speed, so there’s a lot people are missing out on unless

they go exploring on their own.”

And, just like the residents, both the artists and the businesses often end up coming back for more.

“Some of our venues jump off and on, but most of them are pretty consistent,” she said. “It increases visibility to both the businesses and the artists.”

In fact, the walk itself has adapted to work with local businesses. Though it used to be held once a month, Bray started scheduling them once a quarter last year to make sure audiences always got to see new pieces.

“Some of the businesses have trouble changing their art that often,” she said.

Still, the walks sometimes stretch outside the boundaries of nearby buildings.

Sometimes the walks will have outdoor installations, many of which are set up in Hidden Hollow. Bray remembers one of the first walks held in the area, where dancers performed as part of one such outdoor installation.

“It was extraordinary,” she said.

The walks depend largely on social media and word-of-mouth to draw attendees, which can have mixed success. Sometimes, that means huge crowds filling the streets.

“Our June walk went viral on Facebook,” she said. “It was kind of astonishing.

I’ve never seen that many people on the plaza, even during the dedication.”

Other times, organizers have more of a challenge getting people to come out. Bray said that it’s harder to get people to come out for the winter walks than it is for the summer walks, especially if it’s particularly cold or stormy.

“People tend to want to go out only if the weather is good,” she said.

No matter what the weather is like, the constant construction is also a challenge.

“The (lack of) parking is making it more of a challenge, too,” she said. “It’s easier for people who live here to come out, but we’re trying to bring in more people.”

No matter what the season or the parking situation, however, there are some stalwarts.

Bray said that Commerce & Craft is always one of the most popular stops on the walk, with a variety of artists and craftspeople.

“They always have pop-ups in the front yard, even in the winter,” Bray said. “They’ll invite artists who aren’t part of the store to come be a part of the pop-ups.”

She added that it’s businesses like that, and events like the art walk, that will help keep Sugar House the kind of community that everyone knows and loves. Some businesses have already fallen to demolition, and visitors help the remaining ones stay open.

“With all the development going on in Sugar House, it’s more important than ever to support local businesses and artists if we want to keep them around,” she said.

Family members work to end overdose deaths in Utah with free naloxone kits

A

ndy Plumb’s overdose in 1996 changed his siblings’ lives forever.

“Andy was a middle-class kid from the suburbs, and heroin was a big problem,” said his older sister, Dr. Jen Plumb. Andy was the middle child, a hero to his little brother Sam. But that night, neither Andy’s family nor his friends had access to naloxone, a lifesaving drug that reverses overdoses.

That night, Andy passed away.

“Andy’s friends were with him when he overdosed on May 14, 1996.

They were scared. They left Andy in the basement, buried the paraphernalia and remaining drugs in the yard, and left.

No one called 911. This is the scenario that we are hoping to prevent across our state,” wrote Andy’s siblings on utahnaloxone.org.

In honor of their brother, Jen and Sam started Utah Naloxone in conjunction with the Utah Department of Human services. It is now run by Jen and Jake Zimmerli.

Utah Naloxone’s mission is to get a naloxone kit into the hands of everyone who could use one. “This isn’t limited to law enforcement or health care teams. It’s for anyone,” Jen said.

Opiates include OxyContin, codeine, Dilaudid, heroin and Lortab.

Naloxone reverses opioid overdoses.

“Opiates sit on the brain receptors and trigger a release of pain. But they also trigger respiratory depression (lung failure),” Jen said.

“Naloxone works as a pure antidote or antagonist. It essentially knocks the opiates off the receptors and tells the body to start breathing again. You can’t overdose on naloxone. You can’t get high off of it. The only thing it does is reverse an opioid overdose,” Jen said.

Utah Naloxone has gotten a lot of attention. “We are about 50 months in, and since we started, we know of 3,343 reversals that have been reported,” Jen said.

The nonprofit keeps quarterly numbers on the distribution of kits.

“From July to September 2019 we distributed 5,975 kits. Since we started in 2015, we’ve distributed 65,000 kits statewide,” she said.

Distribution of naloxone in Utah was approved in 2014. “It was a win, but we felt naloxone wasn’t getting enough attention. So we founded Utah Naloxone in July 2015. We launched the billboard campaign in 2016. We wish naloxone would have been there for Andy,” she said.

tured Maline Hairup of Sandy. Hairup’s sister Mindy Vincent, an LCSW with a master’s in public administration, has told her sister’s story many times.

“She was a devout member of the LDS Church who did not drink, smoke or use drugs,” wrote Hairup’s family on the Utah Naloxone website.

Vincent said her sister’s addiction was a direct result of legitimately prescribed pain medications. “After 15 years of being dependent on opiates, Hairup’s prescriptions were pulled.

[She] still struggled with her pain and her addiction, and on Aug. 24, 2014, she tried heroin for the first time. Hairup went to sleep that night and never woke up,” Vincent wrote.

Because of Hairup, Vincent founded the Utah Harm Reduction Coalition.

UHRC is a nonprofit that, among other things, distributes naloxone kits to the homeless population in Salt Lake. “All of [the work I’ve done] is because of Maline’s death. It changed everything about me. She made me who I am today,” Vincent said.

“Hairup never thought she had a problem. She was a firm believer that because the doctor prescribed the pills it was OK,” Vincent said in another story published by UK newspaper “The Guardian” in May 2016.

Jen said posting photos and stories helps humanize the widespread opioid epidemic. Court rulings earlier this year determined that the problem was largely exacerbated by drug companies like Purdue Pharma. Their business practices allowed for major over-prescription of opioids. Rehab is part of the plan, but “no one can get better if they’re dead.

said.

“We want to normalize the access to naloxone. People will use it if they can do so anonymously. They don’t want their doctor, pharmacist, neighbors or employer to know. Our program educates people and gets the kits to them free of charge. There’s no written record of who gets it,” Jen said.

“In addition to law enforcement and fire departments, we’ve given naloxone kits to every public librarian in the Salt Lake Valley. The librarian will show you how to use the kit and give you one,” she said.

Jen said that just like the perception of addiction is changing, so is the perception of who is a hero. “It’s not just someone in a white lab coat in the ER. With naloxone kits, the people who are saving lives are often either people who use drugs or are in that community.

I’ve heard of a 14 year old who saved her mom and an 80 year old who saved her husband,” she said.

The numbers and anecdotes tell Jen that things are improving. “My favorite story happened a few months ago. Some city leaders were touring the block around the Road Home downtown. While they were walking, someone overdosed right in front of them. A person yelled out, ‘Anyone have naloxone?’ One of the people in the group had it and knew how to administer it.

Take time to understand HIV risk factors, prevention and latest treatment

D

ecember is an important time on the national awareness calendar. It is officially recognized as AIDS Awareness Month. Dec. 1 is recognized worldwide as AIDS Awareness Day. Now is time to learn more about human immunodeficiency virus or HIV. HIV is a virus that develops into AIDS without the proper care and antiretroviral drugs. There are exciting new prevention measures for HIV, and there is a national need for more awareness. HIV wasn’t just a passing Hollywood scare of the 1980s. There are still newly diagnosed patients each year in Utah.

Kevin DeMass is a registered pharmacist with the state of Utah and a guru on HIV support. He is a trustee for the Utah AIDS Foundation and owner of The Apothecary Shoppe (www.apothecaryshoppeut.com), an independent community pharmacy and part of the Good Neighbor Pharmacy network in Salt Lake City (82 S. 1100 East, Suite 104).

His goal is to help patients already diagnosed and educate everyone about prevention measures. DeMass believes knowledge is a key factor to someday eradicating HIV in Utah’s population and beyond.

DeMass can show anyone the statistical data. HIV is being diagnosed now most often at the ages of 13-34. It’s not just an STD (sexually transmitted disease) prevalent among the “promiscuous.” It can be more comfortable to think it’s not a problem in monogamous life. Actually, HIV is spread in ways one might not realize. “A low-risk life is not a zero-risk life,” DeMass said.

Who is at risk for possible exposure?

DeMass explained who should be paying attention.

“You’re working in the ER, you’re a first responder, you’re a member of the SLC police department, you’re a dental assistant, you come upon an accident, you are a teacher and a child cuts their hand during cut-andpaste in the afternoon.” People of any age can

HIV can also be spread by sharing needles, even one sample of heroin at a party.

Or exposure can happen at a medical clinic where an employee gets poked when handling or cleaning surgical instruments. Do employers have a plan to protect medical and dental workers? Do staff members know what to do if they get cut, punctured or splashed in the eye? HIV is a crucial staff meeting subject.

If you have an exposure to an HIV positive person, there’s now an approved protocol for immediate treatment.

Actually, there are two new treatment methods for the prevention of HIV transmission. The two methods are called PrEP and PEP. Pre-exposure prophylaxis (or PrEP) is for people who do not have HIV but are at risk of getting HIV. Treatment is a simple daily pill.

Post-Exposure Prophylaxis (or PEP) is the use of antiretroviral drugs after a single high-risk event, like a needle puncture or unprotected sex. PEP must be started as soon as possible to be effective. One should not wait more than 72 hours after a possible exposure.

More information on PrEP and PEP can be found at the cdc.gov/hiv website.

There are different medication brands with both PrEP and PEP, with different side effects to each so talk to your health care provider if you may be a candidate.

DeMass offers important reminders that some jobs have daily exposure to bodily fluid contaminants. Also, that relationships come easier and more frequent through dating websites like Tinder and Bumble. Many people, including teens, are sharing stuff, navigating social and sexual freedoms. These are reasons to continue to take HIV and transmittable diseases very seriously.

you get an HIV test every year. If you have been a high-risk person only in the past, you should still get a new test each year, because you may be asymptomatic.” DeMass promotes getting a test at least once, even if you’re a low-risk person. Knowing your HIV status is an important part in prevention.

The Utah AIDS Foundation offers free confidential HIV/STI (Sexually Transmitted Infection) testing and counseling (UtahAids. org).

Many might think that if one is living a conservative lifestyle, getting an HIV screening is not necessary. DeMass disagreed. “All of us, globally, should get one test in our lifetime. Even if you’re monogamous, never had surgeries, haven’t been to the dentist or never bleed. It’s just one test.” DeMass encourages people to check out the Ryan White story at ryanwhite.com. Ryan was a 13-year-old boy who contracted HIV through a blood transfusion in the 1980s.

There are modern screenings in place to prevent HIV from being transmitted through blood transfusions today. However, DeMass pointed out, “We live on this planet with a lot of people. There are 38 million people infect-

ed with HIV today, and we share space every single day.”

DeMass said one can be exposed even if they haven’t had surgery. One screening in a lifetime is suggested for everyone. He encourages all to ask for a test at least once.

It can be done easily when getting regular blood work taken. Ask your doctor. Anybody can visit AIDSVu.org to find out where to get a free HIV test.

The UNAIDS organization has set an ambitious 90-90-90 treatment target to help end the AIDS epidemic. This goal is to have 90% of the world population know their HIV status. Then, to have 90% of infected individuals receiving sustained antiretroviral therapy. Finally, the goal is to have 90% of people receiving antiretroviral therapy, in viral suppression. More about the 90-90-90 program can be found at UNAIDS.org When it comes to HIV prevention, there’s one more simple thing all people can do: communicate. Talk with loved ones about prevention. Talk about the dangers of needle sharing. Get up to date with safety protocol in the workplace. And maintain strict protective sexual health habits. l

Air pollution in the Salt Lake valley is a problem: an obvious statement. The good news is, it’s become less of a problem than it was in 2010.

In a presentation to the American Planners Association, Thom Carter, UCAIR (Utah Clean Air Partnership) executive director, stated that, “From 2002 to 2017, total emissions have dropped 38% despite the population increasing 34% during that same time period.”

Why is the air better? Because we discovered the primary culprits for pollution.

Us. Fifty-two percent of Utah residents are now aware their own vehicles are the biggest contributor, whereas six years ago 56% thought mines, refineries and other industries were at fault.

Because residents see themselves as responsible, many are making efforts to change their habits.

Taking public transit instead of driving alone is one of the biggest changes people are making.

“With 50% of pollution coming from our tailpipes, not idling, reducing cold starts, taking transit, carpooling are most beneficial to reducing our impact on air quality,” Carter said.

Another major contributor to pollution is old appliances.

“Changing out a traditional water heater

to an ultra-low NOx water heater can make a big difference. Experts at the Department of Environmental Quality tell us that nitrous oxide or NOx is a precursor of PM2.5 (Particulate Matter 2.5 micrometers)….When a homeowner switches to an ultra-low NOx water heater, it reduces NOx emissions by 75%,” Carter said.

The little things, like turning down the thermosat and replacing old appliances, can help lessen pollution.

There’s even a way to save yourself cash and reduce pollution; turn your furnace down by two degrees.

“Regarding thermostats, we know that people are turning down their thermostats to save money and help air quality….This 2 degree difference can save 1 ton in CO2. The average family emits 25 tons of CO2 emissions per year,” Carter said.

However, if any of these small efforts stopped, pollution would again skyrocket. l

Despite our impatience or urgency to get to the desired location, slow driving is the safest driving. Staying under the speed limit, which is meant for ideal conditions, becomes even more important when traveling over snow, ice, standing water or slush.

In drivers education courses, prospective drivers learn about the rule for distance between your car and the one in front of you.

Driving 60 mph? Stay six car lengths back. 70 mph? Seven car lengths back. This distance should be increased even more during wet conditions to allow the car time and space to stop without rear ending the vehicle in front.

Older, more experienced Highland wrestlers look for continued improvement

ith more upperclassmen and more collective varsity matches under their belts, the Highland Rams could be a different squad on the wrestling mat this season.

Last year, the Rams had their ups and downs with a youthful squad. This season, head coach Ted Sierer is expecting big things from his team, possibly a Region 6 championship.

“My expectations for the team are to build on the accomplishments of last season,” Sierer said. “We were a young and mostly inexperienced team last year. We took some lumps, but we definitely got better as the season went on and were a better team at the end of the season than we were at the beginning. I want us to continue to build on those improvements. Overall, we should contend for a region title. I feel that is a very obtainable goal for this set of kids.”

Sierer has two accomplished competitors to lead the group. His son, 106-pounder Colin Sierer, and 195-pound wrestler Paul Clark, both placed at state a year ago. Colin Sierer took third in his weight group in the Class 5A state tournament, while Clark was fourth at 182 pounds. Both are seniors.

Joining these top competitors are juniors Josh Berg (138 pounds) and Paris Hawkins (145 pounds). Sierer expects both wrestlers

to emerge as leaders and compete well all season. The Rams’ coach knows how important it is for these team members, and others, to lead by example and set the pace.

“In order to achieve our goals, we need to take advantage of every opportunity to get better,” Sierer said. “Overall, we need to get strong leadership from our seniors. We have a great set of seniors who have put a lot of time and effort into the program. These boys need to fill leadership roles and take the others with them as they achieve their goals. Our younger boys need to work harder than they ever have. Each one of us needs to be willing to do hard things.”

So far, in preseason workouts and practices, Sierer has been impressed by the team’s work ethic and the culture the athletes have established. He also believes the team will excel under pressure situations.

“I feel our strength as a team centers on our abilities to adapt to various situations and overcome obstacles,” he said. “These boys aren’t afraid to put themselves into the spotlight and carry their teammates on their shoulders. Overall, this team is a family. They genuinely care about each other and find joy being with each other. I feel this allows each boy to feel he has a home.”

Hikers, bicyclists, equestrians weigh in on the future of Salt Lake County’s trails

he Visit Salt Lake website boasts of Salt Lake City’s significant “trailheads in town”—but the only trails referenced are downtown-accessible and reference access to the Wasatch Mountains.

For those of us who live here, trails matter, too—and not just trails accessible from downtown, but trails in our parts of the valley for varied recreation as well as interconnected trails for daily transportation to-and-from work and other interactions.

The city of South Jordan routinely publicizes year-after-year survey results that the No. 1 amenity cited by residents is the city’s robust trails network. City administrators and elected officials repeatedly remind residents of this fact, when matters of development come up—such as paving previously unpaved areas to earn funding to interconnect the trails with other systems throughout the valley, etc.

The Jordan River Parkway is a continuous, non-motorized, paved trail, which follows the Jordan River—what Salt Lake County Mayor Jenny Wilson calls “the heart of the county”—for 45-plus miles, weaving in and out of urban areas, parks and marshy areas.

Salt Lake County Parks and Recreation Planning Director Martin Jensen told the City Journals that Salt Lake County Parks and Recreation Planning Department is working to “get municipalities and interested parties to come together” to help define and divine the area’s future for trails.

In the quest to best understand trails, he said he spent nearly a month studying—by personal enjoyment on a family vacation— trail systems in Japan, some of which date back to the eighth century.

Trails, he says, do not represent “one source of truth.”

defended the importance of preserving river ecologies (riparian corridors)—attended and vigorously contributed in both written and verbal comments to the plan.

THOSE DEEP IN HORSE COUNTRY SPEAK OUT LOUDLY AND PROUDLY

Draper is still a horse community, although ordinances over the past few decades have reined in the larger-scale stables that once helped define the agricultural area now succumbing to development.

The Draper Open House, held at the Dimple Dell Recreation Center, was notable in three ways.

First, the session kicked off all four open houses.

Second, it was well-attended, dwarfing participation at other open houses.

Third, those attending the meeting and sharing their insights were decidedly horse-rights oriented and were of the “anti-pave” nature.

The nation’s oldest continuously operating horse organization, the Green Mountain Horse Association, indicates that horses are “the vehicle that thinks” and that “horses are the only means of transport into the wilderness that has a mind of its own.”

As a result, horse owners approach the concept of trail sharing as one requiring thoughtfulness and consideration from both rider and non-rider points of view.

Timmer, a cycling aficionado who tends to ride his bike just about everywhere—either in tandem with transit or just solo—notes that it is “a different experience” riding on paved trails versus unpaved trails.

Young families, he observes, benefit in the effort to get children started on mountain biking by having a predominance of softer, unpaved trails, which are easier on newbies likely to experience some falls.

That said, Timmer also indicates that he is a big fan of the storied W&OD Trail—or “Wad” trail, which is short for Northern Virginia’s Washington and Old Dominion Trail.

That trail is an asphalt-surfaced rail trail that runs through densely populated urban and suburban communities as well as through rural areas.

Wad, then, seems akin to Salt Lake County’s Jordan River Parkway.

“There’s a place for both,” he said and added, “I ride my bike wherever I go.”

Another hardcore cyclist is Kevin Dwyer.

Dwyer, on the board of both the Salt Lake Valley Trails Society and the Salt Lake Bicycle Collective, underscored what he sees as the critical importance of Salt Lake County’s trail visioning update.

“This plan is important—it’s a pathways plan,” he said, observing that the county’s plans for more extensive soft-surface trails, which are also connected with other existing or new trails, would significantly add to the quality of life and limit the need for automobiles in the overall transportation equation.

While horse and hiking enthusiasts are interested in the recreation side, bicycle riders such as Timmer and Dwyer are interested in leveraging the two-wheeled recreation experience they love to the fullest extent possible—and doing so in a safe environment.

Although the Salt Lake Valley Trails Society’s webpage features a mid-air cyclist in a 160-degree position, Dwyer indicates trails can offer—and need to offer—cyclists safe, connected transportation routes throughout the Salt Lake valley.

Dwyer says he has been hit by automobiles three times while riding his bike. As a result, he says he no longer elects to ride on roads without dedicated pathways.

“Without a plan like this, I am terrified,” he told the City Journals. l

Interior design chapter uses talents to improve mental health at The Children’s Center

n the evening of Oct. 30, The Commercial Interior Design Association’s (IIDA) Intermountain chapter hosted their first community outreach event at The Children’s Center.

A group of 25 designers led by Sydnie Young and Dannon Rampton came together to work on the project of redesigning the interior of the historic Oquirrh School building.

Designers divided into groups to reimagine the layouts of each floor and how the space could be used to effectively to address the needs of children facing challenges related to behavior and mental health.

Using the dimensions that the center collected, each group was assigned a floor of the building and drew designs on wax paper.

The designers imagined layouts that included sound-insulated acoustics and a friendly and supportive environment.

The mission of the designers is to work together with The Children’s Center to cre-

ate an interior environment where the children can thrive and heal from trauma. As a designer who has a background in working on health centers, Young believes that design can directly enhance the well-being of the children.

“Design is one of the most powerful tools that we as humans have,” Young said.

“Every single space that you’re in has been influenced and affected by design. Whether that’s the color of the light, the layout of the space; everything that is good is influenced by design. As interior designers we are able to come into a space, evaluate it, and if things aren’t working, what can we do to evaluate it and make sure that they are.”

Over the coming years the center will flourish by adding therapists and outreach groups. The center’s purpose will be enabled from the utility function of efficient design.

to children with special needs. The new spaces will integrate easy accessibility and make the features usable for everyone.

The effectiveness of the therapy will be improved if the center is safe and aesthetically pleasing to the children.

Many designers came eager to share their talents to help people in the community experiencing difficulties related to mental health. Rampton knows that the designs will further the mission of the center.

“We, as a group, wanted to help them create a vision for where they want to go in the future with this facility. We want to give them a vision of how they can be more functional,” Rampton said.

The chapter originally became aware of the opportunity through one of their members who is on the board of The Children’s Center.

The committee of the IIDA has two members that head up the project. The chapter views its efforts as a way to help the com-

munity and to educate the public on what their profession does.

Rampton explained that the chapter realized that it would be more impactful to use their licenses to change the interior instead of doing a singular day of community service and updating the upholstery.

The chapter will continue to work with the board over the following months to determine the future plans for the interior.

The Children’s Center building that is being redesigned is on the National Register of Historic Places and is located at 350 S. 400 East in Salt Lake City. It serves children around the valley and South Salt Lake.

The building was designed by Richard Kletting, the award-winning architect known for his design of the Utah State Capitol building. It was built in 1894. l

Youthful Highland boys basketball team hoping to gel as season gets underway

A

fter finishing in a tie for third place in Region 6 a year ago, the Highland boys basketball team faces some big challenges as it looks to move up the standings.

The Rams will do it with a lot of new faces, along with a couple of returning starters.

Highland must replace last season’s topthree scorers, Christian Rich, Liki Makaui and Jackson Hawes. The good news is head coach James Boyce welcomes back Chris Rich. The senior tallied six points, two rebounds and two assists a contest a year ago.

Fellow senior Nate Warr has some varsity experience. He contributed seven points and five rebounds per game last season.

Sophomore Elijah Tolbert saw brief varsity action as a freshman but will be counted on much more this season. He led the team in scoring during its fall league.

The rest of the squad is composed of new faces, but Boyce is optimistic about the team’s talent level.

“We are a young team but have a lot of good players,” he said. “We are pretty skilled with some nice athleticism and size. I am looking forward to seeing the progress of this team and the players.”

Last season, Highland reached the Class 5A state tournament, defeating Bountiful

71-60 in the first round. The Rams fell to Corner Canyon in the quarterfinals by the count of 64-50. Getting to the postseason is always one of Boyce’s objectives. However, this season, there’s no need to set that goal.

The Utah High School Activities Association has instituted a Ratings Percentage Index, or RPI, system. This ranks teams based on their records, their opponents’ records and the records of their opponents’ opponents. Instead of the top four teams in each region making the state tournament, every team will qualify.

Still, Boyce wants to do more than just participate in the tournament; he wants to win.

“As always, we want to have double-digit wins and single-digit losses,” he said. “We also have a goal of playing at the Huntsman Center, which means that we have won two playoff games.”

Boyce is referring to advancing to the semifinals where teams square off at the Jon M. Huntsman Center on the campus of the University of Utah for a chance to play for a state title. The Rams last reached the semifinal round in 2016.

Highland opens the 2019-20 season Nov. 26 at home against Judge Memorial.

The team then will take part in the Corner Canyon Tournament of Champions, Dec. 5-7.

Westminster dance, music concerts light up December

elebrate this December with music and dance.

The Westminster Department of Dance is ready to help people start tapping their toes with the upcoming MOSAIC dance concert, set for Dec. 6 and 7 at 8 p.m. at the Jay W. Lees Courage Theatre. The college’s music department is kicking off their Winter Music Festival the same nights, starting with a performance by the Westminster combined choirs. The Westminster Chamber Players will follow on Dec. 9, the college’s chamber orchestra on Dec. 11, and the Westminster Jazz Ensemble on Dec. 12. All the festival concerts will be at 7:30 p.m. at the Vieve Gore Concert Hall.

“Performance opportunities are a key part of an education in music,” said Emilio Casillas, who handles public relations for the music department. “So while our students are able to share their hard work and talents with the community, the community, by attending, helps our students learn and grow as

performers.”

The same is true of the dance department, which holds a winter concert every year. This year’s concert is put together by two guest choreographers, but it’s based on a semester’s worth of techniques and styles taught by educators across a variety of classes.

“I’m hoping audiences will enjoy the mixture of styles and mediums,” said Jared Larkin, an associate professor who works with the dance department. “Not only will there be live dance – modern, contemporary, ballet, etc. – but we will also be presenting the outcomes from our Dance for the Camera course. It should prove to be a unique night of dance.”

The students, who audition for classes, also audition for various roles within the production. Their individual talents add another level of variety to the concert, as well as one more way the dance concert earned the name MOSAIC.

“A mosaic is generally a piece of art composed of multiple pieces of various color, shapes, sizes, and textures, some of which could have been works of art themselves,” he said. “Our concert is the creation of a unified work of art composed of multiple pieces or art with various styles, techniques, narratives, and vision. I liked the idea of the coming together of these disparate pieces to create something collectively that they may not have individually.”

For Larkin, that coming together mirrors the larger flow of the world itself.

He said his favorite thing about the dance concerts “is the way they capture the human condition, experience, and/or narrative through movement. The artistry and aesthetic of humanity shared through the body in space and time.”

The Winter Music Festival is a new version of an old tradition for the college’s music department. The various performing groups always had winter concerts to show

off everything they’d learned throughout the semester, but they hadn’t made an event out of it.

“Each concert, each performance, represents a benchmark in each student’s education,” Casillas said. “Every performer has spent years learning, training, and rehearsing in order to be able to perform at the level they do. Our faculty, who frequently perform with their ensembles in some capacity, have spent decades honing their own skills as musicians, performers, and, most importantly, educators.”

Even better for audiences, all that skill is being poured into all different types of music. Over the course of the festival, the groups will perform everything from classical masterpieces and experimental music to jazz classic and new twists on old pop favorites.

“My personal favorite component of the festival is the diversity of music,” Casillas said. “Our students put on fantastic performances, and there is something for everyone to enjoy over the course of the festival.”

Tickets for MOSAIC are $12 general admission. Winter Festival tickets are $5 per event, or $15 when purchased all together as part of a festival bundle. Tickets for all individual events can be purchased online at westminstercollege.edu/campus-life/events-and-performances/performing-arts-events.

Westminster students, faculty and staff can get tickets to all events for free, but those tickets must be purchased at the college’s box office with a Westminster I.D. The festival ticket bundles must also be purchased at the Jewett Center for the Performing Arts box office, located at 1840 S. 1300 East. The center is also the location of the Jay W. Lees Courage Theatre, while the attached Emma Eccles Jones Conservatory is home of the Vieve Gore Concert Hall. l

or some reason unbeknownst to me, us Utahans get way too hyped over holiday lights. Perhaps, we really like them because of the creative designs. Or maybe it’s because it’s a cheap or completely priceless way to spend a magical night with friends and family. It might even be a way for many of us to fight the seasonal depression that comes along with the winter darkness. Whatever the reason may be, we love some holiday lights.

If you haven’t checked out these locations yet, I recommend them for a usually-completely-free experience (unless you’re buying some hot chocolate).

My favorite light events over the past few years have been the Trees of Life. While originally named the Tree of Light, many residents have nicknamed the trees “Trees of Life,” for various reasons. One of the most stunning trees grows in Draper City Park (1300 E. 12500 South). Every year, over 65,000 lights are carefully strung throughout the tree. When lit (which occurs the first Monday evening after Thanksgiving) all of the branches of the tree are illuminated; making it seem like a tree from a magical world.

Throughout the valley, many more Trees of Life are being decorated. The closest one to me personally resides in a cemetery. That’s where I would check to see if there’s a Tree of Life near you.

Temple Square arguably has the most famous lights within the valley. Located in

downtown Salt Lake City, Temple Square decorates their 10-acre complex with many different colors and styles of lights. This year, the lights will be on from Nov. 29 until Dec. 31. Check them out from 5 p.m. – 10:30 p.m.

The Grand America Hotel in SLC (555 S. Main St.) is a building to sight-see all year round. When it’s lit up with Christmas lights though, it’s hard not to miss.

City Creek (50 S. Main Street in Salt Lake City) will turn on their lights for the season on Nov. 21. Their event titled “Santa’s Magical Arrival” will kick off at 6 p.m., when the Candy Windows at Macy’s on Main Street are revealed. The Westminster College Dance Program will be performing “Eve” and will be followed by a fire fountain show.

Light the Heights in Cottonwood Heights will occur on Dec. 2, beginning at 5 p.m. A holiday market will be open as City Hall, located at 2277 E. Bengal Blvd., turns on their lights for the first time this season.

Other public spaces that are worth walking through to see the lights are This is the Place Heritage Park (2537 E. Sunnyside Ave., Salt Lake City), Gardner Village (1100 W. 7800 South, West Jordan), and Thanksgiving Points (3003 N. Thanksgiving Way, Lehi).

Beginning on Dec. 6, Hogle Zoo (2600 E. Sunnyside Ave.) will host Zoo Lights! intermittently throughout the season until Jan. 5. This event does require an entrance fee of

In Taylorsville, (another unofficial) Christmas Street has been causing quite a stir. It’s a festive neighborhood where the residents really take to the holiday. Located around 3310 W. Royal Wood Drive, this street is one to cruise down.

The Lights on Sherwood Drive in Kaysville is also a neighborhood gaining popularity. According to their Facebook page, their Christmas light shows are fully controlled and synchronized to a light show. Shows start at 5:30 p.m. and run until 10 p.m. every day of the week.

Son of a Nutcracker

I

t’s the time of year people pretend “The Nutcracker” ballet is a fun holiday activity. If you’re one of the lucky few who never sat through this weird production involving multi-headed vermin, living toys and one unsettling old man, here’s a recap.

Picture a festive house in the late 1800s with dozens of dancing guests, skipping children and happy servants, basically it’s the “12 Days of Christmas” come to life. Young Clara and her obnoxious brother, Fritz, are the ballet version of little kids crazy-excited for Christmas. (The ballet version differs from real life because ballet dancers don’t speak, where real children don’t shut up from Thanksgiving to Christmas morning.)

Dr. Drosselmeyer, Clara’s super-creepy godfather, appears at the party dressed like Count Chocula and presents her with a wooden nutcracker. Clara is over-the-top ecstatic, for reasons I’ll never understand. I guess children had a different relationship with nutcrackers in the 19th century.

Clara’s brother is SO jealous of the gift (right??) that he flings the nutcracker across the room, because really, what else can you do with a nutcracker? Clara’s despondent. She wraps his broken wooden body in a sling (like ya do) and falls asleep on the couch, snuggled to her nutcracker.

During the night, the Rat King and his minions sneak into Clara’s home, because why not? She wakes up and freaks out. The

nutcracker turns into a handsome soldier and wields his sword to defeat the rodent army.

“Nutcracker! You’re my hero!” screams Clara, if people in a ballet could talk.

“That’s Prince Nutcracker to you, peasant,” he sniffs in pantomime, before taking her to the magical Land of the Sweets ruled by the Sugar Plum Fairy who has an unclear but definite sexual relationship with Prince Nutcracker.

While in the Land of Sweets, Clara watches dancers from Russia, Spain, China and Arabia (?) as they perform in a culturally stereotypical fashion. Prince Nutcracker sits next to Clara cracking walnuts with his jaw like some football jock.

Mother Ginger shows up in drag with a skirt full of tumbling children, then there’s a flower waltz and dancing pipes and tons more pirouetting before the Sugar Plum Fairy takes the stage to make everyone else look clumsy and insipid. It’s all performed to Tchaikovsky’s musical score that stays in your head through January.

In the end, it turns out it was all a dream, as most stories involving young girls and adventure turn out to be.

I told you that story to tell you this story.

When I was a gangly 11 year old, still full of hope, I auditioned for Ballet West’s “The Nutcracker.” As the audition drew nearer, I practiced every spin and arabesque I’d ever learned. I played the music all day until my

dad walked into my room, removed the album from the turn table and smashed it into pieces with his bare hands.

I showed up at the audition with my hair pulled into a bun so tight it closed my eyes. An elegant dancer performed several steps that we practiced for a few minutes, then we performed for the judges. It was over so quickly.

As dancers were given roles as soldiers, party goers and mice, I held my breath.

But my number wasn’t called. I was heartbroken.

Maybe decades later I’m insulted that the ballet judges couldn’t see my awkward talent. Or maybe I’ve endured enough versions of this tale to see it’s craziness. And if “The Nutcracker” is your family’s favorite holiday tradition, ignore my opinion. It’s all a dream anyway.
