SSL EMPLOYEES REMOVE WINDSTORM DEBRIS FOR RESIDENTS

I

n recognition that Sept. 11 is a national Day of Service, 20plus South Salt Lake employees volunteered for a local Day of Service.

The original plan was for the employees to help plant trees in the parks. However, the hurricane strength winds of Sept. 7-8 changed plans. Rather than planting trees, the employees picked up tree debris.

“Some of my best days in office are the days I am not in the office at all but have the opportunity to meet and serve our residents. The windstorm caused a lot of damage in our community and I appreciate working with staff who are willing to put their work clothes on and clean up our city,” said South Salt Lake Mayor Cherie Wood said as she participated in the noontime group.

Project The project was a joint effort by the Community Connect and the Public Works departments. They were estimating about 25 loads would be picked up throughout the day.

There were three times in the day that employees gathered at the Public Works yard for instructions and their assignment. They teamed up in pairs and were given an area to work.

In small dump trucks, they traveled residential streets picking up piles with rakes, coal shovels and brooms.

“I wanted to do my part to help Public Works. These folks have been working 24 hours a day to clean up the damage,” Dustin Permann from City Recreation said.

Local crossing guard loves her job of 40 years

“

Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds.” While this is the unofficial motto for United States Postal Service workers, just change “couriers” to “school crossing guards,” and the same motto applies to them.

One such school crossing guard who has braved the elements and helped children cross the street safely for 40 years is Helen Singer, who is out every day holding her original stop sign.

She keeps a newer one in the car just in case the original one breaks. Such is an example of how Singer lives her life— keep going until you can’t.

Singer is a South Salt Lake native and has lived on the same street for all her 69 years.

For 20 years, she worked at 2700 South and State Street but when they built the new Woodrow Wilson Elementary on Main Street, Singer’s new duty station is across from the school on Stratford Avenue.

“I love my job,” Singer said.

Singer is so committed to the safety of schoolchildren that when a few years ago her adult son was taken to the hospital, Singer stayed at her post until her shift was finished and then went to the hospital.

“Helen is the most dedicated and punctual employee I’ve ever seen. She’s determined to never miss work. It is very easy to supervise Helen since she is such a good employee. She’s very dedicated to her job and the children who she crosses,” said Sgt. Bill Hogan of the SSLPD, who supervises the crossing guard program.

Singer took the job because she could be home in the evenings with her husband and children.

One thing she misses in our pandemic world are the hugs she would get from the children. On those rare days, when she isn’t at her post, the children ask her the next day where she was.

Singer’s times are 8:30 to a bit after 9 a.m., to catch those children running late. Her other assignment is from 3:30 to 4:00 p.m. Because of the modified school schedule, she only works Monday through Thursday.

Because of falling enrollment and more children being driven to school, there aren’t as many children as there use to be. Singer says there are more kids in the afternoon.

When asked what advice she would give to a new crossing guard, Singer offered four items: be on time; dress appro-

priately for the weather; no smoking; and no swearing around the children.

Weather can be tough to take, especially in the winter, she said.

“It is a bit tricky with the ice, but the neighbors are good shoveling off the snow for me.”

Singer plans to continue her job for as long as she can.

“I am happy, and I am in good health,” she said.

Singer’s biggest complaint is the traffic.

“Too many cars don’t slow down. They don’t obey the school lights,” Singer said.

Currently, SSLPD has one opening for a school crossing guard. The responsibilities are simple: assist children in crossing streets safely while they travel to and from school. Guards also must place warning cones on the street and turn school crossing zone lights on and off.

The weather can be challenging since it is outside work. It also requires walking and standing.

The job requires 10 hours a week and employees are paid a $687 monthly stipend.

A resident’s opinion Lorraine Dipo lives on Oakland Avenue right next to the Public Works yard. She has lived there for 67 years.

She had placed a pile of wind-damaged rubbish on her parking strip. In the windstorm, she lost a peach tree, a totem pole made of flowerpots, a lighthouse and a garden cart. A team picked it up.

“It is great they are picking this stuff up.

My trash can is full,” Dipo said.

State of Emergency As a result of the windstorm, Wood, after consulting with available council members, declared a state of emergency on Sept. 8.

The emergency declaration stated that wind speeds exceeded 100 mph in some places in the city.

The document also stated, “as a result of that severe windstorm many locations in the City experienced serious property damage including downed trees, power lines, damage to homes and vehicles, destroyed sidewalks, road closures, loss of power, and many other items of property damaged or destroyed.”

Fitts Park took some hits as many trees came down on the east side. Parts of the canopy over the play area also came down.

within the city.

It also allows the city to request and obtain disaster assistance from the state or the federal government.

The declaration also activates all or parts of the disaster emergency plans and allows the city to “furnish aid and assistance” as it is related to the windstorm.

The next day, Salt Lake County declared a state of emergency because of the extent of the damage, the need for resources, and the cost of recovery.

On the same day, the State of Utah also declared a state of emergency, which expedites the use of state resources and federal resources. l

SSL Animal Services helps residents, animals for 40-plus years

outh Salt Lake Animal Control officers are not “dog catchers” and the place they work, South Salt Lake Animal Services, is not the “dog pound.” These are outdated terms for a place and organization that works to protect animals and for people who try their best to give the animals a second chance in life.

“Watching a dog go to a forever family is very rewarding,” Chelsea Torres, animal control officer, said.

SSL Animal Services The SSL Animal Services is more than 40 years old. It started with a small truck and a row of kennels. The current location at 2274 S. 600 West was built in 1977. As needs grew, the building was expanded.

The building is still small but within the building, 20-30 animals were housed pre-pandemic. Currently, the numbers are much less.

The shelter is a no-kill shelter. Animals are typically housed for five to 10 days. If the animal isn’t collected or adopted, the shelter works with multiple rescue organization like The Humane Society of Utah and Best Friends Animal Society to find a forever home. The aim is to never put down an animal.

Typically, the shelter takes in dogs, cats, and other small animals like rabbits, birds, and chickens. However, they have been called to pick up a baby anaconda, a large bearded dragon, a tarantula and Norwegian ponies.

Current situation Like so many other places, the animal shelter is currently closed for walk-in traffic.

However, you can call for an appointment and view shelter animals as well as rescue group animals at adoptapet.com.

The shelter is not taking surrenders.

“When a person calls us asking to give up their pet we try and figure out what the root cause of the surrender is. We will give resources to help them with problems they may be having. However, not every person has options to try and keep the pet and, in those cases, they will surrender the pet to the city. We never want to see this happen but, in some cases, there isn’t much else we can do. Once an animal comes into the shelter, we do a behavioral test on the pet to see what kind of home that dog or cat will be best in.

We try our hardest to ensure that the new home will be one that sticks. If a dog is aggressive it does not mean that it is a bad dog.

It just means we have to be a little picky in the home they go to with experienced dog owners with no other pets in the house. We are here to make sure every pet gets a second chance,” Torres said.

They still take in strays and work to reconnect the animal with their family. If they pick up a stray, but because of a microchip or a license the animal is from a different juris-

diction, the animal will be transferred to the correct shelter.

Cost of services If a dog or cat has been spayed or neutered and are microchipped, the cost for adoption is $8 for cats and $18 for dogs. If the dog or cat has not been spayed or neutered, the cost goes up to $68 for cats and $100 for dogs, which pays for the needed surgery.

“Please spay and neuter your pets,” Torres said.

If because of ill health, an owner chooses to euthanize their animal, SSL Animal Services can help. The cost is $10 for residents and $100 for non-residents. If the owner wants only their animal’s ashes returned, the cost is $75. However, if the owner allows their animal to be joined with another animal,

the cost is $35. In this case, the owner gets most of their animal’s ashes back along with helping another animal to have a final resting place.

Animals and the pandemic In a Salt Lake Tribune article published on May 2, it was reported the interest in adopting dogs has increased during the pandemic. However, the number of adoptions was about the same as before the pandemic.

Because shelters and resource groups were closed to the public, more dogs were put out to foster families. Online, adoption agencies only placed a few photos. This gave a sense of a low supply. So, the longest a dog was featured was lower.

Given the appearance of a shortage and the need increasing, more future owners

turned to breeders at a significant increase in cost.

Torres suggests to always do research on the breeder.

“It is important to know that if you are paying for a purebred, you are getting a purebred,” Torres said.

Adoption advice SSL Animal Services encourage the motto, “Adopt, don’t shop” meaning to go to shelters or rescue groups rather than to a puppy store.

“Do your research on what you think you want, a purebred dog from a breeder may look pretty but shelters and rescues will have all sorts of options. Mutts are some of the cutest and healthiest dogs out there, and if you want that purebred yorkie you should still go

check your local shelter, they do turn up every once and while,” Torres said.

Adoption is a big commitment. Owners need to think about taking care of an animal for its entire life, which for dogs is about 1015 years and 15-20 years for cats.

“Bringing home that new dog or cat is exciting and we love watching them leave our shelter into a happy new life. The animals we care for here at South Salt Lake are like our own pets and we love them all, we can’t take them all home so when they leave we tend to get a little emotional knowing that they have a second chance at forever,” Torres said.

Licensing Animal licensing isn’t simply a revenue stream for the city. It is designed to protect the community from sick dogs and cats and allows Animal Services to reunite stray animals.

According to city code, all dogs and cats need to be licensed after turning six months or 10 days after acquiring an animal older than six months. Proof of vaccinations is required at the time of licensing. Ferrets need to be licensed as well.

A tag with the license number is given and should be worn by the animal. In the case of cats, owners can request the animal be microchipped rather than having a tag.

If an incident like a dog bite occurs, a license allows Animal Services to know the responsible party and the rabies status of the dog. l

Community gardens allows refugees to connect with the land and others

t Central Park, among the soccer fields, basketball courts and pickleball courts, a community garden is growing. The garden is sponsored by the New Roots Initiative, which is a program of the International Rescue Committee (IRC) in conjunction with Wasatch Community Gardens.

The community garden here is one of two in South Salt Lake. A larger one is located at the Central Valley Reclamation Facility on the west side of the city.

Central Park Community Garden Each plot in the garden is 4-feet by 20feet and there are 23 families working the plots. The plots are designed to raise food for a family. In a survey done last year at the Central Valley Community garden, 88% of participants reported saving on groceries. It was estimated that 41 families saved $5,650 together. If a family wants to grow more, they can apply for a second plot or participate in the microfarming training program also sponsored by the IRC.

“I think it is helpful and empowering for refugees to use the skills they already have in their new community home,� said Sarah Adams, the New Roots community garden coordinator.

The garden was built in 2015. Promise SSL provided the land and the irrigation system. New Roots provide tools, seeds and, in some cases seedlings. They also provide workshops during the winter on how to grow in the Utah climate and how to improve the soil. They also help during the growing season.

The planting season starts in early to mid-March and runs until November. For the first two years, the garden is free. Afterward, gardeners are responsible for the plot fee, which ranges from $20 to $40.

They try to assign plots geographically so that it is easy for gardeners to come to their plot.

found in most gardens, refugees grow produce from their home countries. For example, they grow pumpkins not just for the pumpkins, but they cut off the pumpkin leaves and sauté them with tomatoes and onions.

Another plant popular with Nepalese and Bhutanese refugees is the Amaranth plant. They cultivate it as a leaf vegetable.

For most other gardeners, it’s a summer annual weed and are commonly referred to as pigweeds.

Mustard greens, okra, eggplant, African bird pepper, taro, and roselle are also popular plants.

Refugee growth The biggest advantage of the community gardens is providing access to fresh pro-

duce for refugee families.

Besides just providing fresh food, community gardens help refugees with a support group. As they tend to their crops, the talk and share. Garden time becomes social time both within their culture and across cultures.

A community garden provides an opportunity for refugees to use their strong agricultural skills in a country where they are trying to learn so much.

A plot also gives refugees a sense of ownership in a world where they own little.

It also provides a connection with the land which is something most refugees had before coming to America.

Police officers provide new flag to homeowners

W

hat does a flagpole, a homeowner, and the South Salt Lake Police Department (SSLPD) have in common? They all had an encounter with Justin Scott Smith.

Smith was arrested on Aug. 31 for aggravated burglary, aggravated assault, criminal mischief, and two counts of assault.

Even though the gates were locked, the suspect entered the yard of a residence in the 900 block of West 3300 South. The names and address are not given for their protection.

One male homeowner came outside and told Smith to leave. They got into a fight. In an effort to get the attacker off her brother, the female homeowner grabbed the flagpole out of the mount. She started to hit the attacker.

In the altercation, the flagpole broke, and the U.S. flag fell to the ground. The victims were able to retreat into the house, but the attacker kicked in the door. He continued to assault the family until going to the bedroom. Police found him lying on the bed.

Both SSLPD Patrol officers and Homeless Resource Center officers responded.

When Sgt. Joe Cummings arrived, he picked up the U.S. flag from the ground and put it on the porch railing.

“The homeowner thought that I was going to arrest her because the flag was on the ground,” Cummings said.

Cummings continued, “I was so touched by her respect and concern for the flag that I knew something had to be done.”

The police on the scene soon realized that the family would not be able to replace the flag.

They all chipped in money. A new flagpole and flag were purchased.

For their Sept. 1 8 a.m. briefing, the Day Shift Patrol Officers and others went to the home to hang the new flag.

“The homeowner was so delighted,” Cummings said. “It is wonderful to see someone who cares so much about our flag.”

According to U.S. Code Title 4, Chapter 1 Section 8, “The flag should never touch anything beneath it, such as the ground, the floor, water, or merchandise.”

In the same section it states, “The flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning.”

If you were taught that a flag that touches the ground must be destroyed, you were only taught part of the story.

When asked, the American Legion provides this answer on their website, “The Flag Code states that the flag should not touch anything beneath it, including the ground.

Cottonwood football celebrates historic Senior Night with first win since 2018

till in the throes of a COVID-19 pandemic, Cottonwood head coach Casey Miller was presented with a choice as the football season neared: hold Senior Night earlier than usual or face the risk of not having it played at all.

Miller decided on the first option. For the first time in school history, the Cottonwood football team held Senior Night on Friday, Aug. 21, its first home game. To the delight of their socially distanced fans in masks, the Colts recorded a 14-12 win over Carbon— their first since 2018.

Compared to the Summit Academy game the previous week in which the Colts scored the first six points—then gave up 40 unanswered—they hung on this time against Carbon to get their first dub of 2020, according to Miller.

“We played well for parts of the game and not well on others,” Miller said. “We had to stop them on a 2-point conversion to win it.”

After putting a halt to Carbon’s first drive of the game by forcing an interception, the Colts galloped down the field early in the

first quarter on a mix of runs and passes. Then quarterback Brock Simpson found freshman wide receiver Roman Caywood streaking down the sideline, connecting on a 34-yard pass for a touchdown with 6:34 to play.

Scoring first for the second game in a row, the Colts defense then forced another interception. But more good field position didn’t amount to much on the second drive of the first quarter as Cottonwood punted.

However, after pinning Carbon deep in their own end midway through the second quarter, the Colts defense forced a fumble, putting their offense in good shape.

Junior Jordan Larett punched through the Carbon defense for a 15-yard touchdown run with 6:49 to play before halftime. After a comedy of errors in the second half that would be the difference in the Colts victory.

“We found a way to win, but we still haven’t put together a good four-quarter game yet,” added Miller, whose team has since suffered back-to-back losses to Copper Hills (748) on Aug. 28 and Skyline (0-69) on Sept. 4.

“We faced a big, physical [Copper Hills] team and they were able to push us around a bit,” Miller said. “We were completely outmatched against [Skyline] and then we played poorly on top of it. Shouldn’t have been 69-0 but we let them get after us.”

A 28-21 scrimmage loss to Park City JV on Sept. 10 doesn’t technically count in the standings for Cottonwood as it continues its eight-game independent schedule, but it’s frustrating nonetheless, according to Miller who ticked off several key issues in Cottonwood’s losses. “We had more total offense than them,” he said. “But we turned it over five times…can’t win vs. anyone with turnovers.”

In the win over Carbon though, there were some bright spots for the 1-4 Colts, who forced those turnovers to which Miller alluded. A total of three interceptions, one fumble recovery and a field goal block that would prove—along with two missed Carbon point-after attempts—to be the difference-makers on Senior Night.

As the month of September rolls on, Miller added that Cottonwood will now be able to punch against teams at their weight.

“We now play the other four independent teams (Timpanogos, Payson, Providence Hall and Judge Memorial) as well as the Highland JV. We hope to compete and see how we do against similar teams.” l

Teen Mom Strong program helps young mothers navigate life

hile the teen birth rate has been in a steady decline over the years, the 2018 national rate of 17.4 per 1,000 women ages 15-19 is substantially higher than other western industrialized nations. 2018 is the latest year of data reported by the CDC. The Utah rate is 13.1. Only 11 states have a lower rate. Massachusetts has the lowest at 7.2 and Arkansas has the highest at 30.4.

On the CDC website, they outline some of the social/economic costs of teen births.

“Teen pregnancy and childbearing bring substantial social and economic costs through immediate and long-term impacts on teen parents and their children.

• Pregnancy and birth are significant contributors to high school dropout rates among girls. Only about 50% of teen mothers receive a high school diploma by 22 years of age, whereas approximately 90% of women who do not give birth during adolescence graduate from high school.

• The children of teenage mothers are more likely to have lower school achievement and to drop out of high school, have more health problems, be incarcerated at some time during adolescence, give birth as a teenager, and face unemployment as a young adult.”

Teen Mom Strong In response to this situation, Planned Parenthood Association of Utah has developed a program for expecting teens and teen moms called “Teen Mom Strong.”

“We are a small program with a big impact,” Annabel Sheinberg, vice president of External Affairs, said.

They report some great success on their website.

• Since 2011, over 120 participants enrolled in our pregnant and parenting support and educational group.

• From 2015 to 2018, 95% of group members have graduated with a high school diploma early or on time.

• Compared to their peers in Utah who are not in the program, our members enroll in schooling and paths to employment at far higher rates.”

“I am so impressed the level of commitment of our members to themselves, to others, and to their children,” Sheinberg said.

One key benefit of the program is that it reduces the isolation felt by many teen moms.

The focus is on the participants. Pre-pandemic, they met at the Sorenson Multicultural Center (855 W. California Ave.). During the pandemic, they are mostly working with participants one on one through texting and phone calls. Like other group therapy organizations, they tried Zoom, but found it not effective.

When they met in person, childcare was available. On a conference call, moms must tend to their child’s needs, and they don’t also

have the privacy they need.

“There is power of the group. It takes away the stigma away,” Sheinberg said.

They are reviewing other online platforms to get back to the group therapy advan-

tage. In addition, they could reach out to the entire state giving support to a teen mom in Logan and in Panquitch and in Hurricane as well as Salt Lake County. However, not until next year.

Another pandemic related initiative is to provide food to participants. Food insecurity is a common issue for teen moms. They are looking for a way to deliver food boxes each month.

Meetings The group is conducted by a staff facilitator, but most often guest presenters are brought in. One central focus is healthy relationships along with employment, education, and ways to navigate life.

Participants also have access to other social support organizations and government programs.

Participants are given a $10 stipend at each meeting. When participants have come for 12 weeks, they receive a $100 bonus.

Sometimes, teen fathers are invited to meetings but there is no program for teen dads.

In most cases, teen moms are without partners.

The free program is open to all expecting teen moms and teen moms who are 19 or younger.

Typically, case workers and other social programs refer participants to the program.

However, individuals can also contact Planned Parenthood directly.

A facilitator will call the individual to explain the program and determine the commitment level. Participations must commit to one-year involvement. They also must follow rules about attendance, behavior, sharing, and providing support for other members. l

Sales tax numbers show large, sustained Cottonwood volleyball wins first game of season versus crosstown rivals COVID-19 boost for most cities

his June, the City Journals featured an article about how the first sales tax reports released by the state showed early signs that COVID-19 had actually boosted sales tax collection in the month of March, relative to the same month the previous year.

Readers responded with valid feedback, pointing out that sales tax numbers for March included all the panic-buying of food and toilet paper that was going on at the time. They theorized that sales tax numbers would go down in the following months as the bulk-buying relaxed and as the County’s order to not allow dine-in eating was put in place.

Others pointed out that an increase in sales tax from year to year should be expected, as populations grow and new businesses open. They suggested that the Journals compare 2020 sales tax numbers not just to 2019, but to previous years as well in order to provide more context to how COVID-19 is impacting our economy.

So with these two pieces of feedback, this reporter downloaded additional sales tax reports from the Utah Tax Commission for the months of March through June between the years of 2017 and 2020. What this reporter found is that COVID-19 has been a big boost for the coffers of most cities in the Salt Lake valley.

Twelve out of 15 cities collected more sales tax in the four-month period than in the same period any of the previous three years.

The only cities that didn’t were Salt Lake City, Murray and Sandy. (Murray and Sandy trailed previous years’ numbers March-May, but rebounded in June to beat previous June numbers.)

Many cities have experienced a sustained period of increased sales tax collection throughout all four months, suggesting that there’s been more than just a two-week pe-

riod of panic buying that’s kept Utah dollars flowing.

Seven of the 15 cities have stayed ahead of previous years’ numbers for all four months. Many of them by quite a bit. Riverton’s sales tax collection is up 36% relative to its 2017-2019 average. West Jordan is up 26% and Holladay 22%. Five others are in the 10-20% range (West Valley City, Taylorsville, South Salt Lake, Millcreek and Cottonwood Heights).

The question is: why the big increase?

Stocking up on toilet paper in March doesn’t explain it. And the growth is more than what one would expect from regular economic expansion. So why are Utah businesses as a whole collecting more sales tax during COVID-19?

One possible reason could be that Utahns who normally would be traveling out-of-state for vacation—spending their money at Disneyland or Las Vegas or in Europe—are staying home and spending that money here instead.

There also may have been an influx of college students who normally would have been living on campus, in places like Provo or Logan or other university towns out of state, but who returned to their parents’ houses in Salt Lake County, bringing their generous young adult spending habits with them.

Of course, all these numbers mean is that these city governments should be in good shape. They’re not reflective of the state economy as a whole. According to UtahPolicy.com, sales tax collection is up statewide by 5.9% but the state’s revenue from income taxes is down 10.1%. So while most city governments seem to be in good shape, many individuals and small businesses within those cities may not have been as fortunate. l

“I have a great, strong group of girls that love the game, so I’m excited to see what they can do this season,” said head coach Rae Mulitalo. “I have nine seniors this year; all have given me their all since I’ve been a part of this program, so I’ll be losing a ton of girls this season.”

On the year, senior outside hitter Gladyz Fakaosiula, also the team’s ipso facto leader, leads Cottonwood thus far with 27 kills and six service aces on the offensive end.

That said, Cottonwood also has a young bunch of up-and-comers, according to Multialo.

“I also have a super young group of girls…my sophomores and JV that play really well together, so these next few years can be very rewarding if they continue to work hard.”

That group of younger players is led by junior setter Eleanor Stevens who has also lent both hands to the Cottonwood effort on

offense, providing 36 assists to her teammates.

On defense, the Colts (1-4 overall, 1-1 region) are paced by Shae Sorensen, a junior middle blocker. She’s registered 18 blocks while the senior leader Fakaosiula has also been a beast on the other end, digging out 56 opponent shots.

Even with the unusual balance of young and old, Cottonwood is well above the national average in hitting percentage (.241) as well as blocks and digs per set.

Forced to play its first three games on the road due to Salt Lake County COVID-19 health and safety restrictions, Cottonwood kicked off its season at Westlake on Aug. 20, dropping a three-game sweep.

The Colts rebounded to nearly defeat Juan Diego at Juan Diego, losing a five-game thriller.

They then wrapped up their preseason slate of games, losing in three straight at Granger.

The Colts then had their first home game of the year Sept. 1 versus Brighton—also their region opener. Cottonwood was swept in that match, losing three games to zero.

Cottonwood will now continue its Region 6 play through the month of September, with home games scheduled after press time against Skyline and Olympus and away matches slated at Murray and East. l

What are you waiting for? Just VOTE! This is a big election year, and I am sitting on the edge of my seat. Fortunately, this year, it isn’t my turn to be on the ballot (relief), but it is a pivotal time for our community and the nation. So I am still anxious about the outcome. Why? Because all issues are local.

Our state and federal level leaders Mayor Cherie Wood set the budgets and policies that make their way down to how our city functions. Our city budget relies significantly on funds that come from taxes collected at a state and federal level. Our projects and priorities have to be funded, and have to follow the rules set by others. The rules for schools, police departments, transportation projects, healthcare and many other critical services are made in large part by other agencies, who are elected, too.

We speak up as a municipality, but we need the support of citizens speaking up, too. As a small city, political leaders can too easily write us off or feel like our votes aren’t enough to sway them. I challenge you to prove them wrong! In a small city, your local vote for a small council district has much more weight than in a larger city. A single vote is more statistically meaningful. So is a voice from a typically under-represented area – it stands out!

I urge you to vote in this election. Register to vote once and you will continue to receive information on elections and ballots that can turn voting into a habit. Vote and you will get the satisfaction of taking action and the motivation to act in other ways. Check out vote.utah.gov and then get out there and VOTE!

Even If you are not yet 18, or are not a U.S. citizen, you can encourage the change you wish to see. Beyond casting your ballot, here are tips to get the attention of elected leaders and get results: Be informed – Learn about the issues, relate them to your family and community, and consider the tradeoffs. Sign up for the city newsletter, read the newspaper, and connect with advocacy groups for the issues you care about.

Speak up – Talk about your life and issues on social media, newsletters, public meetings and surveys. Talk to your neighbors and contact your elected officials. Your voice matters just as much as your vote!

Volunteer – Whether you volunteer for a cause, for a campaign, or simply to benefit your community, you’ll find an easy path to learn other people’s perspectives and experience issues more personally.

Top Ten Reasons to Vote: 1. You have the right and privilege to vote in a democracy.

2. To decide how your taxes are raised and how they are spent.

3. To advocate for funding in your community.

4. To secure fair job conditions, benefits and pay.

5. To improve education and childcare.

6. To have access to affordable healthcare.

7. To determine Social Security benefits.

8. To improve your commute, whether on foot, by bike, car or transit.

9. To improve public safety and influence how the justice system operates.

10. If you don’t vote, someone else will. Why should their opinion matter more than yours?

Public Safety A Community Gets the Law Enforcement it Insists On I often refer to a quote used by Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy in his 1963 Department of Justice Statement on organized crime. “Every society gets the kind of criminal it deserves. What is equally true is that every community gets the kind of law enforcement it insists on.” Even though the context of Robert Kennedy’s statement was made in reference towards the fight against organized crime, racketeering and corruption, it holds true that the only force that would conquer organized crime would be the vigilance of citizens in every community.

The words of Robert Kennedy have stuck with me over my years in law enforcement, and even more so as I progressed through my career into positions of leadership. Even though I don’t truly believe any community deserves to be victimized, I do give credence to the belief that it takes a community to stand up against crime and even injustice. The second part of the statement; “What is equally true is that every community gets the kind of law enforcement it insists on” are words that I have adopted into my leadership philosophies. As the Chief of Police, I am committed to understanding and listening to the needs of our community, to ensure that the South Salt Lake Police Department is providing the kind of law enforcement you insist on.

The South Salt Lake Police Department has prioritized engagement with our community for many decades. The murder of Hser Ner Moo, a resettled refugee, in 2008 rallied the community to push for additional programs and services. Cherie Wood, as Chief of Staff, took the lead using coordinated efforts with at the time Chief of Police Chris Snyder and the Recreation Department to create Promise South Salt Lake.

Our Department has been an integral partner with Promise South Salt Lake since its inception and the creation of our first community based center, the Hser Ner Moo Community

Center. We continue our partnership today with Promise in the community centers throughout our city. South Salt Lake is ethnically and culturally diverse, we have over 40 different languages spoken in our schools and throughout the community.

Promise South Salt Lake has grown to become a holistic, community-wide Police Chief initiative operation in 14 centers across Jack Carruth the city. The centers serve over 4,000 residents annually. It is an honor to serve with Promise SSL and meet the needs of our youth and families.

South Salt Lake Police has committed resources to provide engagement opportunities at the Promise centers and in the community. We have enjoyed being involved by sharing presentations on crime and gang prevention and we continue to work with our youth at the Central Park Community Center in our Police Athletic/Activities League (PAL) youth boxing program.

To solidify and further the work, Mayor Cherie Wood announced her 3 PROMISES to the community of South Salt Lake, and the commitment to all our youth that they would have the opportunity to succeed. Under Mayor Wood’s leadership every department within the City contributes to this initiative. The Police Department contributes to all 3 Promises by engaging our community, listening to their needs and concerns and adapting resources and services to meet those needs.

The civil unrest we have all witnessed has brought to the forefront that it is more important than ever for us to listen. Your police department is committed to providing the kind of law enforcement you insist on.

Prepare and keep enough supplies in your home to meet the needs of you and your family for at least three days. This “72-hour bag” should be taken with you in the event of an emergency or evacuation. Consideration should be given to having an emergency bag in the home as well as your vehicle. The basics to stock in your kit should include: emergency contact list and evacuation plan, water, food, battery powered radio, flash lights, batteries, change of clothing, blanket, utility tool, fire extinguisher, jumper cables, dust mask, plastic sheeting, duct tape, trash bags, sanitary and hygienic products, maps, first aid kit, household bleach, tin foil, signal flair, paper and pen, plastic storage containers and a manual can opener. In addition, special items for infants, elderly and ill or those who require additional assistance should be considered.

School is Back in Session

Fire Prevention Month Fire prevention month raises awareness about fire safety and home safety to help ensure your home and family are prepared in case of an emergency. Fire prevention month has roots that date back to The Great Chicago Fire of 1871 that killed more than 250 people and left more than 100,000 homeless. The deadly fire reportedly started on October 8, and as the fire expanded and advanced through the town panic ensued, people realized that there was no place for guaranteed safety. They became fearful and began to flee for their lives creating havoc in the streets and impeding everyone’s safe escape.

This year’s theme is “Serve Up Fire Safety in the Kitchen”.

We will focus on the simple but important actions you can take to keep your households safe in the kitchen. Did you know that cooking is the #1 cause of home fires and home fire injuries?

Almost half -- 44% of reported home fires start in the kitchen.

Two-thirds -- 66% of home cooking fires start with the ignition of food or other cooking materials.

We know cooking fires can be prevented. Staying in the kitchen, using a timer, and avoiding distractions such as electronics or TV are steps everyone can take to keep families safe in their homes. The South Salt Lake Fire Department encourages all residents to embrace the 2020 Fire Prevention Week theme.

Take these safety steps to keep you and loved ones from having a cooking fire.

Preparedness Tip #10: Prepare a 72-Hour Emergency Bag

Be alert, phones down, travel slowly and yield to pedestrians.

• Never leave cooking food unattended.

Stay in the kitchen while you’re frying, grilling or broiling. If you have to leave, even for a short time, turn off the stove.

• If you are simmering, baking, roasting, or boiling food, check it regularly, remain in the home while food is cooking, and use a timer to remind you.

• Remain alert when cooking! You won’t be alert if you are sleepy, have taken medication or drugs, or consumed alcohol.

• Always keep an oven mitt and pan lid nearby when you’re cooking. If a small grease fire starts, slide the lid over the pan to smother the flame. Turn the burner off and leave the pan covered until it is completely cooled.

• Have a “kid-free zone” of at least 3-feet around the stove and areas where hot food or drink is prepared.

Before you serve a meal this month, it’s essential that you “Serve Up Fire Safety in the Kitchen.” There’s nothing like spending time cooking a delicious meal for family and friends.

Business & Development CELEBRATING 39 YEARS WITH SOUTH SALT LAKE! Helen Singer began working for our City in October of 1981. She is by far our most dedicated crossing guard. She rarely misses a day of work, even putting the kiddos needs above her family needs at times.

Helen is a lifelong SSL resident, she resides on the same street she grew up on. She loves keeping our kiddos safe and is passionate about her work and the SSL Police Department.

Fun fact, Helen still carries her original STOP sign.

BUILDING PERMIT PROCESS To ensure the health and safety of the public, the City of South Salt Lake requires that construction work can only be performed after a permit is obtained. Community Development works to ensure that all buildings obtain the proper permits and conform to our City Building Codes and the International Building Code.

Our division oversees two major areas to ensure safe and successful construction: Building Permits - We process applications and review building plans before issuing permits to ensure compliance with the current building codes.

Inspections - The work is then inspected during construction to confirm adherence to the approved plans and codes. We issue a Certificate of Occupancy or a Certificate of Completion when the work is done and in compliance with all code requirements.

WHEN IS A PERMIT REQUIRED? A permit is required for the following type of projects: • New Buildings • Additions • Tenant Improvements • Structural Modifications • Renovations (basement finishes, kitchen expansions, roofing, etc.)

• Electrical Installations (service upgrades, meter change, new branch circuits, etc.)

May I start construction prior to my permit being approved? No. Any project that starts work without a permit may be subject to citation and a double fee for the application.

Do I need an inspection with my building permit? Yes. All building permits require an inspection. Please call 801.483.6032 to schedule an onsite inspection. If work is completed without an inspection, the applicant is responsible for removing and/or replacing all uninspected work to ensure compliance.

Capital Improvements Updates West Temple Lighting The up and coming Meadowbrook neighborhood is getting another boost to make it feel more like home. Street lights are in place and ready to turn on along the stretch of West Temple at Harmony Park and Waverly Station townhomes. The pedestrian lights add to the character of the neighborhood while the street lights focus on intersections and crosswalks. This project was funded in part by Community Development Block Grants from HUD (Housing and Urban Development). The project will continue next year with similar lighting on Main Street.

New Park at Columbus Center (pictured at right) As construction on the park’s paths, lighting, pergola and sport court wrap up, the playground contractors will jump in to build the city’s newest and wildest attraction. The new park is intended to bring different people together in play – of any age, ability, interest, and culture. A committee selected the playground design from over a dozen choices – seeking a “playground for all.” It will include the first “Hedra” playground in the state (check it out at playlsi.com) and other unique elements not yet found in the city. The playground will be built in October and open soon after. Hooray for play!

Columbus Center Generator Many of the city’s buildings have generators to keep them running in an emergency or crisis, such as September’s windstorm. City Hall, the police station, fire stations, public works and animal shelter are all equipped to keep running and keep employees functioning, in a crisis or even just a minor power outage.

Columbus Center now joins the ranks of buildings that can remain safe, secure, and operational in difficult conditions. The center often is filled with seniors, students, library patrons, special events and employee at work in the Recreation and Promise SSL departments. The generators allow for safe operations or evacuations and can also support the city’s goal for emergency shelter or operations if the need arises.

Community Happenings Volunteers to the Rescue!

Fall is typically a busy time for volunteer projects, especially tree plantings and landscaping. Even in the time of COVID-19, several projects were planned in September with youth, employees, and volunteers from both Tree Utah and Seven Canyons Trust. After completing one volunteer project at Fitts Park, the city encountered a much bigger need – cleanup from the windstorm on September 8.

Volunteers were reassigned to help collect fallen trees and debris and put the massive piles of green waste to a good purpose. Working with Community Connection, Parks, and Public Works, volunteers stepped in to clean up downed limbs on city streets and in parks, and recycled them into bark chips for still happy and healthy park trees. It was a great showing of the community coming together – thanks to everyone who pulled together!

Windstorm Wreaks Havoc on SSL

The September 8, 2020 windstorm left a path of destruction in more ways than one. Days without power for many residences and businesses. Cancelled school and work. Cleanup efforts bigger than any in many people’s memory. The city declared a state of emergency and hopes to recoup some of the cost of recovery efforts. The city lost numerous trees in parks and properties, and private properties lost in trees and damage.

Have you wanted to pursue a higher-paying skilled or technical job but stopped because of the cost? You can now get that new career training for free from Salt Lake Community College if you qualify and apply before December 1, 2020.

There are 36 career pathways to choose from, including Healthcare, Business & Finance, Information Technology, Professional Development, Energy, Manufacturing & Advanced Materials, Technical Training, and Transportation and more. Those who already have earned their undergraduate degree can earn their teaching credentials through the Paraeducation program. The list also includes learning to navigate computer software programs such as QuickBooks or Excel, and computer programming.

You can begin by browsing through the list of eligible programs/courses on the slcc.edu/allin site, and from there you can reach out to learn how to apply, register, and receive financial support. Training is just a stepping stone, and after completion, you can receive assistance in finding employment as well. Rick Bouillon, Assoc. VP of Utah Workforce & Economic Development at SLCC says, “The CARES Act is there to help the workforce reconnect or pursue a different career opportunity through training and skilling-up for a wide variety of industry sectors.” Opening up new employment opportunities, SLCC also provides Career Services, and while in class, they can point you in the right direction with connections and companies.

FIRST TWO FULL WEEKS OF NOVEMBER Boxed, Bundled and Bagged Curbside Cleanup The citywide cleanup program is available to all South Salt Lake residents who currently receive City garbage service. Curbside pickup will be provided for approved items that are boxed, bundled or bagged.

The intent of this program is to reduce pollution in our streams, rivers and lakes and will keep our city clean. When utilizing curbside collection, residents are reminded that hazardous materials such as oil, batteries, paint, tires and other pollutants will not be collected. Ace Recycling and Disposal, the city’s garbage and recycling contractor, will be collecting bulky waste items during the first two weeks of November. Properly prepared items must be placed on the curb by 6:30 a.m. on the scheduled collection day. The pickup schedule will be delivered to your home in advance.

How Do I Dispose Of Tree Debris?

“One of the leading indicators of mental health and wellness in a community is from the suicide rate,” says Edward Lopez, Chair of the Family Engagement Committee for Promise SSL and part of its Mental Health Coalition. He says, “As a Coalition, we meet on a regular basis to discuss our goals and ways to support mental health.” It’s a complex issue, and this year we have faced more than just your regular stresses, a pandemic, an earthquake, job furloughs, businesses closing, and a severe windstorm to name a few, and our community’s mental health has suffered. “It’s a serious issue,” Joseph Genda, Chair of The Mental Health Coalition says, “Where I am originally from in Africa, if a person displays certain issues such as depression or mental health issues, it is considered witchcraft and would not be addressed by mental health professionals or doctors.” And that being said, being mindful of how cultural issues and communication barriers for those new to this country can play into mental wellness is an important one.

Promise SSL’s Mental Health Coalition is three-fold, training its staff and building awareness, gathering and sharing resources when needed, and networking with others so that they can support and help each other. As an example, a Crisis Support Resources leaflet was created by the City, Promise SSL, and the United Way of Salt Lake to provide a quick and useful list of resources. Small enough to keep in your wallet, at the top of this leaflet, if dealing with a life-threatening emergency and call 911, you can ask for the CIT (Crisis Intervention Team), who are specially trained to help someone in a mental health crisis. The addition of a bright yellow Friendship Bench (or buddy bench) at the Columbus Center is another way to open doors and provide a means for communication in our community. It’s an idea that started in Zimbabwe as an approach to therapy that uses listening and

The Friendship Bench has been so effective that this concept has been adopted by other areas as well as schools as a place to go if one needs a friend to talk to. The bright yellow bench is an easy way to seek out safe communication with others. At the Columbus Center with the new addition of a playground and pickleball court on its north side, you can spot the first of possibly many other bright yellow Friendship Benches to come. And if by chance you notice it, feel free to sit there, perhaps you’ll make a new friend and boost their mental health.

Around the United States, zoos offer free viewing from their animal cams, celebrities read children’s stories for a cause, and children’s book authors offer drawing lessons for house-bound families.

Closer to home, generosity gets personal.

With locations in Sugar House, South Jordan and Taylorsville, Schmidt’s Pastry Cottage began offering free loaves of bread after Gov. Gary Herbert quarantined the state. Since then they have baked and donated 90,000 loaves.

Owner Steve Borg said, “It’s been a lot of work but it’s opened up our hearts. We’ve had a lot of generous people volunteer, donate here and there. We have a flour company donate some flour and so it keeps going.”

All school districts and charters in Utah have been given permission by the USDA Family and Nutrition Service to waive lunch fees for all students, whether they qualify for reduced or free lunch normally.

“This is welcome news for the communities we serve,” Canyons School District’s Nutrition Services Director Sebasthian Varas said. “We have families who may not qualify for free or reduced-price lunch but have been financially hurt by the pandemic. This will hopefully bring them some peace of mind and take at least one worry off their shoulders.”

A West Jordan employee donated $15,000 from his own salary back into the city budget to support other employees who have offered exceptional service during the pandemic.

“I feel strongly that we need to make sure we are telling our employees thank you for these kinds of actions and reinforcing their kindness and extra efforts. To that end, I asked the Mayor to transfer $15,000 to the employee recognition line item [in the 20202021 city budget],” said Korban Lee, West Jordan chief administrative officer (CAO).

Such examples of kindness included a West Jordan police officer who organized and purchased a small birthday celebration with his own money for a young girl involved in a recent crime.

“After a recent horrific tragedy...the mother mentioned in passing that a 7-yearold in the family was having a birthday in a couple of days. Our patrol officer quietly took note. This officer teamed up with one of our support staff and a detective to organize a surprise birthday party (from 6 feet away) for the little girl. They delivered gifts, pizza and a visit from a K9 officer with no fanfare and without telling the Chief or their supervisor,” Lee said.

port all Hispanics across the country. Edgar Carreon, Utah hub leader for Hispanic Star, described the organization’s efforts.

“The purpose of the Hispanic Star is to create a platform that highlights and share stories of contributions Hispanics make to society. It is also a platform for Hispanics of all backgrounds to come together to bring about positive acts of kindness in our community,” Carreon said.

After receiving almost 200,000 personal care items (soaps, hair products, feminine hygiene products, laundry detergent) Hispanic Star sent out a call to anyone in the area who needed basic supplies. They organized five locations in the Salt Lake valley to distribute 2,000 kits during the summer.

Telemundo, Univision and radio stations broadcasted the events, inviting anyone who had been adversely impacted by the pandemic to come get kits full of necessities. All the supplies were gone within an hour.

Not long after the death of George Floyd and the surge of protests calling for defunding of police departments, the Midvale precinct of Unified Police received fortification rather than opposition. Boxes of doughnuts, stacks of cookies and bouquets of flowers arrived at their office.

Precinct Chief Randy Thomas said, “We’ve never had so many doughnuts delivered in my entire life. I can’t eat another doughnut.” l

City Council makes a gesture of support for the USPS

uring the Aug. 26 South Salt Lake City Council meeting, Natalie Pinkney, councilmember at-large, proposed a resolution against the privatization of the United States Postal Service. While councilmembers voiced support of the resolution, the resolution was not in the SSL format. The resolution was moved to the next meeting, allowing the City Attorney Office to reformat the resolution.

At the Sept. 9 meeting, the resolution was passed unanimously.

“This a great gesture showing our support to the USPS,” Pinkney said.

“I want to thank Natalie for putting this on the agenda. The Postal Service is not only helping communities very much like ours.

But also, more competitive than the privately held companies and are pivotal in voting access and health care. They play a huge role in getting people medicine,” Ray deWolfe, councilmember at-large, added.

Resolution The resolution outlines four points why the USPS should not be privatized.

The city recognizes the importance of the USPS to “a thriving and functioning society.”

The resolution points out that the USPS is “an example of independence and self-efficiency due to its ability to operate without

taxpayers’ funds.”

The next point is that the USPS provides “a positive impact on the nation’s economy” because of the jobs it provides and the delivery of millions of items.”

The final point is the fear that privatization will lead to layoffs, increased prices, and lack of service in rural and low-income urban areas.

“The USPS is a really large employer and they also do a lot with helping communities, specifically low-income communities to get out of poverty by providing them with jobs, jobs to those who were formally incarcerated and giving pensions to families and allowing families to afford college when jobs are hard to get in the area,” Pinkney said.

Want to keep Utah’s museums open? Visit or donate

A

ccording to a July survey by the American Alliance of Museums, some 16% of museums across the United States are in danger of closing their doors due to the financial strain of the pandemic. Even those that aren’t in immediate danger of closing are still under immense financial pressure. Utah’s museums are, sadly, no exception. The Hogle Zoo, the Living Planet Aquarium, the Tracy Aviary, Utah’s numerous dinosaur museums—all of them are under a lot of strain, and if they’re to stay open, need the public’s support.

While most museums do have endowments and financial reserves to fall back on, they’re not big enough to keep them going for very long, and closures earlier in the year have already eaten up almost all of that cushion.

Funding is particularly important, and tight, in facilities with live animals. Places like the Natural History Museum of Utah have the option of closing up completely for a while: the dinosaur bones won’t get any deader if no employees come in for weeks at a time. But zoos don’t have that option. The animals need to be fed and cared for whether visitors are coming in or not, and that makes funding disappear even faster.

The Loveland Living Planet Aquarium, the Tracy Aviary, and the Hogle Zoo all closed for around 50 days from mid-March to midMay—the high season for most zoos—and all three are still reeling from the impact.

“The Hogle Zoo has taken a major hit, there’s no doubt. We were closed for 50 days during a time of year that is critical to the financial health of the zoo. Spring is when we fill our coffers to help keep us afloat during the fall and winter when attendance declines,” said Erica Hansen, the Hogle Zoo’s public relations manager.

A lot more was lost than just ticket revenue. Spring is also a key time for many zoos’ fundraising events, most of which had to be canceled or moved online.

“We had to cancel our conservation fundraising garden party, and our education fundraiser, which raises money for camp scholarships and free nature programs,” said Patricia Dark, the Tracy Aviary’s marketing director.

“Additionally, we had dozens of weddings booked that had to be canceled. All in all we lost about $500,000.”

Keeping zoos open is important, and not just because they’re fun to visit. Zoos are crucial for wildlife conservation, both locally and abroad, and they sponsor a lot of habitat protection and breeding programs for endangered animals. The Living Planet Aquarium farms coral and uses it to bolster struggling and dying coral reefs, which are vital to marine life.

The Tracy Aviary hosts and breeds several species that are extinct in the wild, such as the Guam kingfisher. Zoos are the only chance we have at introducing such species back into their native ecosystems.

To make things even harder, all three zoos are currently operating at limited capacity—in the aquarium’s case, this is by design, as they have been forced to limit ticket sales in order to enforce social distancing requirements in their mostly-indoor buildings.

“We’ve created a timed ticketing system.

This online reservation system allows guests to reserve a specific day and time for their visit. This system ensures that there is always enough room for guests to make physical distancing possible,” Andersen said. It’s a system that helps keep everyone safe, but it also means they’re seeing 40% less attendance than they have in prior years, which makes things hard. “Fewer guests means less revenue, while the cost of caring for the animals and running the facility remains.”

At the mostly outdoor Hogle Zoo and Tracy Aviary, tickets are being sold as normal, but visitors still seem to be hesitant to return in the numbers they used to. According to Dark, the Tracy Aviary is only seeing 40% of its usual amount of visitors. The story at the Hogle

Zoo is similar, even though staff are doing everything they can to make sure that visiting the zoo is as safe as possible.

“We were among the first three zoos in the country to reopen and our team worked tirelessly to make that happen,” Hansen said of Hogle Zoo. “We have hours for high-risk and elderly on Monday mornings, 8 to 10 a.m. Masks are required indoors and strongly encouraged outside, we have numerous hand sanitizer stations throughout zoo grounds, distance markers and lots of reminders for guests to take caution. We’ve had a few vocal parties on the great mask debate of 2020, but otherwise, most guests seem to be enjoying their time and are happy to have a safe place to stretch their legs.”

With this decrease in visitor revenue, there’s a fair amount of worry as to what will happen should a winter resurgence of the virus trigger a second wave of closures. Will the museums be able to survive it?

“Boy, we sure hope so,” Hansen said.

“That could be tough for us, and we’re currently counting on revenue and attendance during our popular BooLights and ZooLights events to help us out.” At BooLights and ZooLights, which occur around Halloween and Christmas respectively, the Hogle Zoo grounds are bedecked in hundreds of colorful holiday-themed lights. Both events are good family fun, and have been well attended in the past. Unfortunately, they also take place in fall and winter, which is when epidemiologists say a resurgence of the virus is likely.

Government aid is also a possibility.

“Depending on the length of any closure, we

would be seeking federal and local funding like those that were allocated through Congress in April,” Andersen said of the aquarium. This would also be an option for Utah’s other zoos.

Representatives from all the state’s museums and zoos said the public can help them to stay open. People can make a difference, through visiting them and simply donating.

“We need visitors now more than ever.

Or we at least need your support. There are many ways to donate,” Hansen said.

Many museums, including the Hogle Zoo, are currently holding silent auctions, with prize packages donated by community businesses. Some even open after regular hours on fundraiser nights: the aviary is holding $30 socially-distanced outdoor movie nights throughout September, which gives people an opportunity to explore when the sun is less intense and nocturnal birds are active.

Buying annual memberships to your favorite museums functions as a donation as well as a pass to visit them often. And, of course, there’s always the tried-and-true simple cash donation, which can be made through most any museum’s main website.

Donations really do make a difference for museums. It sure made a difference for the Natural History Museum of Utah, whose curators were, earlier this summer, worried whether it could survive the year. But after their Fund the Future drive in June yielded nearly triple their original goal, their future is secured. With the public’s help, that same security can be given to other favorite museums. l

This year as the leaves changed I was reminded again how lucky we are to live in Utah where we get to experience four seasons in all their glory. Recently I had an opportunity to visit a beautiful area of our County--Butterfield Canyon--for a #BiketheButter Mountain Bike Rally.

With a gentle nudge from our mountain biking friends, we have an opportunity to take some of our Salt Lake County open space and make it more accessible. We have the chance to build a multiuse trail system in the southwest corner of the Salt Lake Valley and tie together Butterfield, Yellow Fork, and Rose Canyons. Ordinary pumpkins become extraordinary in the hands of ‘The Carving Chizel’

rowing up in Spanish Fork, Aaron Reimschiissel always celebrated Halloween with his family in a big way. His mother’s birthday happened to be on Oct. 31 and she celebrated every year with a special party. By carving jack-o’-lanterns for her annual celebrations, Reimschiissel discovered his special talent for transforming ordinary pumpkins into works of art.

This year, Reimschiissel plans to create his unique pumpkin carvings at Halloween events around the state including the Utah Water Conservancy Pumpkin Walk and the Pumpkin Walk in Daybreak. Last year, he carved pumpkins at Pumpkin Nights in Salt Lake City. He specializes in carving very large pumpkins that often can weigh several hundred pounds. These pumpkins have extremely thick and hard rinds which allow for sculpting depth and texture. He has carved everything from faces to monsters and animals to elaborate castles out of pumpkins.

“I try to do something a little bit different each time,” explained Reimschiissel, who uses the name “The Carving Chizel” professionally. He never knows what the pumpkin will look like in advance. “Within just a couple of minutes I have to decide what to make. I have to look at the shape and see what fits into it. That’s the biggest challenge. A face can fit any type of shape. You have to adjust with the pumpkin,” he said.

Murray spook alley carries on in nightmarish times

I

t might seem like there are enough anxiety-inducing things in the world lately, so a frightening Halloween venue might be the last thing people want. Yet owners of Murray’s Dead City Haunted House (5425 S. Vine Street) think now is a perfect time for patrons to get a supernatural scare.

“Entertainment via escapism is always needed in the darkest of times.

We can’t expect everyone to feel comfortable participating this year. We can, however, do everything possible to guarantee safety procedures are in place for those who do,” a Dead City spokes-monster (wishing to stay in character) said.

“This industry has its fans and artists that desperately need a distraction; we understand the responsibility not to disappoint, having invested in all the necessary resources to keep everyone happy and healthy.”

Dead City Haunted House is one of Utah’s newest indoor haunted attractions, now in its third season. They are featuring over 50 rooms of fear, with three all-new areas for 2020. Owner Tim Riggs has a history with the local spook alley industry, dating back to the Utah Fun Dome Haunted House, Rocky Point, and more.

With the COVID pandemic, attraction organizers have had to address customer safety by adding additional precautions and mothballing certain

practices.

“We can only do this together, so face masks are mandatory—to keep the screams safe. The show has been completely overhauled this year while maintaining as many scare spots as possible.

Hands-on options have been suspended, while all actors are kept at socially distanced positions inside the show,” the Dead City spokes-monster said. “Surfaces are cleaned regularly, several UV air filtration systems have been installed above the show to run constantly, and nightly fog sanitizes surfaces from entry to exit. All mazes and claustrophobic tunnels have been removed to maintain group distancing and avoid touching. Online ticket purchases are encouraged at a discounted rate.”

All staff and cast members have temperatures checked before being allowed backstage. Employees communicate and operate through personal mobile devices, and all backstage meetings are kept outside whenever possible. Cast members apply their own makeup, with very few needing it due to the heavy use of masks this season. Bridges have been built above the tighter areas to give actors the ability to operate some new surprises from a safe distance.

As part of keeping staff and patrons apart, Dead City will employ puppets or animatronic monsters to provide the screams.

“You will all have to come see if you can tell who (or what) is real or not inside the show and what they (or it) might do.

Very cutting edge to our knowledge, just one of the many custom creations by our engineering owner that helps make Dead City Haunted House unique to Utah,” the spokes-monster said.

Halloween isn’t Dead City’s only exclusive holiday; they have adapted their attraction to multiple holidays this past year. They hosted a “Krampus Night” in December, based on the central European tradition of a half-goat, half-demon that visits naughty children on Christmas, a complete opposite of Santa Claus. The Krampus event allows Dead City to give the Christmas season a monstrous makeover with a visit by Krampus and his minions. Krampus Night caught national recognition, and Dead City was recognized

by HAuNTcon and Haunted Attraction Network as “2020 Haunters to Watch.”

The award stated, “Dead City Haunted House impressed us with their video creation, narrative tie into their overall theme, social media contest, and overall use of a limited budget.”

at three-dimensional pumpkin carving and sculpted a Dracula face in a pumpkin.

That pumpkin was featured in a local newspaper article and he was asked to carve pumpkins at another Halloween party. It was there that he met members of the Utah Giant Pumpkin Growers Association. He has been carving for them ever since.

Reimschiissel credits his mom, who enjoys crafting and drawing caricatures, with encouraging his interest in art. He has studied drawing as well as sculpture. Reimschiissel continues to study form and shape to build his repertoire of pumpkin designs.

“Right now I’m learning about skeletons,” he said. “I just bought one to learn more anatomy. I have a lot of ideas in my head!”

Reimschiissel’s wife, Chelsea, had never seen 3D pumpkin carvings before she saw his work. “It’s so cool how creative he can get,” she said. “He never goes in with a plan. Most of the time he just wings it which is amazing to me.

He gets asked all the time how he plans [his designs] but most of the time he just shows up and carves.”

The spontaneous nature of Reimschiissel’s art and the fact that he is often carving in front of an audience is the most challenging aspect. “When people are watching there’s a level of thinking ‘you have to make it look good!”” he said.

He recalled a particularly difficult carving project in which he sculpted a winged devil out of a pumpkin and ended up inserting a separate piece of rind to make the head.

Reimschiissel’s two young daughters, Kaiyah and Kinlee, are his biggest fans. Kaiyah, who is 9 years old, is showing an interest in carving pumpkins as well. “They have so much pride in their dad’s pumpkins. The best thing is bringing them to events. They get so excited and will just stand there forever watching him. They like to tell people that’s their dad,” Chelsea said.

“It’s fun to see the kids’ reactions,” said Reimschiissel, describing the aspect he likes best about carving in front of an audience. In 2019, he carved a “punk beast” pumpkin at Thanksgiving Point. The Utah Giant Pumpkin Growers Association later took that pumpkin and displayed it in front of Primary Children’s Hospital. Being able to share his work with the hospitalized children was one of the highlights of his carving career.

He is looking forward to the upcoming Halloween season and carving more unique pumpkin creations. Halloween film haunts in our backyard

According to a report that came out late last year by the Utah Governor’s Office of Economic Development (GOED) which includes the Utah Film Commission, film production dollars spent in Utah more than doubled between 2015 and 2019 to about $87 million. The state film commission attributes the growth to a variety of scenery, economic incentives, and available talent. In a press release from this September available on the film commission’s website, it was announced that the GOED board has approved “five new productions for state film incentives, generating an estimated economic impact of $6.5 million and creating over 185 local jobs.”

Utah horror film enthusiasts will find no shortage of locations to visit this Halloween season. A recent production that was filmed around Salt Lake City and has a story set in the state is the critically acclaimed 2018 horror tragedy film, “Hereditary,” starring Gabriel Byrne and Toni Collette and written and directed by Ari Aster. The story follows a family in turmoil as they are haunted by a menacing presence following the death of a secretive maternal grandmother. School scenes were shot at West High School in the Salt Lake City School District and at Utah State Fair Park. The exteriors of the family’s house and tree house were shot in Summit County, and perhaps the most picturesque and hauntingly beautiful scenes at the cemetery were filmed at Larkin Sunset Gardens in Sandy.

“Hereditary” premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in early 2018 and was a critical and commercial success grossing over $80 million.

Two of the films in the legendary “Halloween” horror franchise were also filmed in Utah, primarily around Salt Lake City and Midvale: “Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers” released in 1988 and “Halloween 5: The Revenge of Michael Myers” released the following year. Although receiving negative reviews from critics, much like the other films in the franchise, they have maintained a strong cult following. More than 40 years after the first film’s release, you will still find Michael Myers masks, costumes, and decorations in Halloween stores like Spirit Halloween.

Although principal photography for “Halloween 4” was completed in California, filmmakers moved production to Salt Lake City in the spring of 1988 because of rising costs and had to import fall leaves and other fall scenery to make it look like October.

comatose state and escapes transport to a sanitarium in a plight to kill his only living relative, his niece, Jamie Lloyd, daughter of Laurie Strode, a prominent character in the first two and later films in the franchise. The McGillis School in Salt Lake City stands in for Jamie’s school, and her home with her foster family is located in the lower Avenues and was actually up for sale in late 2019. Ghosting ghosts

Decorations remind us of the existence of ghosts, vampires, goblins, werewolves, and other non-human creatures. We may even become a bit more startled by that unexplained noise in the middle of the night. We might wonder if others from beyond share our space.

There are many stories, myths, and folklores concerning ghosts throughout historical contexts. The common foundational plot for all these tales is a spirit has moved on from its original form and is now somewhere between our world and the afterlife. Some lore focuses on the ghosts of animals and objects, but let’s focus on the human ghosts for now.

Ghosts may be noticed through electromagnetic interference, a drop in temperature, items moving seemingly on their own, unrecognizable whispers or other audio abnormalities, and/or environmental features like fire, water, electricity, and wind behaving rather strangely.

“Ghost Adventures,” a 19-season television show, sends out a crew to investigate hauntings.

The crew members commonly have a variety of tools to help them locate ghosts through the avenues mentioned above. They even created their own device called the Extra Investigator Box which detects magnetic, infrared, and other physical events.

If you’re not a star on this Travel Channel show, there are a few household devices that can help detect a ghost. Thermometers, infrared cameras, and motion detectors can be used to detect temperature changes and minimal motion changes. A tape recorder can be used to convert communication outside of our perceptual field into sensations humans can understand.

Ghosts are often believed to be attached to a place, item or person. There are varying stories about why and or how ghosts stick around, but regardless, they often do. Some cultures around the world welcome these ghosts, as they are believed to be visiting family members or other loved ones.

In America, we often do not welcome ghosts and try to rid them from our spaces. If you do suspect a ghost to be in your space and wish to remove them, perhaps helping it to move on,

what can you do? There are a few different recommendations from varying sources for getting rid of a ghost. Before I dive into a few, let me provide a word of caution. When dealing with the supernatural, always do your research, be respectful and cautious, and stay aware.

If you’re convinced a ghost is in your space, you might figure out why it’s there in the first place. Some believe a ghost can become attached to an item, location, or person, continually haunting them. Another belief is that a ghost has unfinished business. If possible, determine why a ghost is still lingering and then the more effective course of action would be to help the ghost resolve their business.

However, if it’s impossible to figure out why a ghost is hanging around, there are some possible actions. A popular television series worldwide with 15 seasons in just as many years, “Supernatural,” shows audiences how “hunters” track monstrous creatures and rids them from this earthly plane. “Supernatural” shows perpetuate the idea that ghosts can be temporary eliminated with salt and iron. It is commonly believed that supernatural beings are aversive to salt. If known, hunters will try to salt or burn the bones or item the ghost is attached to.

In addition, ghost-repelling spells are used in “Supernatural” when other avenues of riding a ghost fail to work, along with holy water. A common lore throughout contexts is that ghosts cannot enter or be on holy ground.

Suggestions from entertainment and television should be taken with a grain of salt though (no pun intended). Outside of entertainment, momentary interaction may be recommended.

If you suspect a ghost is frequently hanging around, it may not be malicious. In which case, it is possible to speak directly to them. When talking to a ghost, experts believe it is important to set boundaries, be assertive, respectfully ask them to stop bothering you and confidently let them know that they are not welcome in the space. After interacting, do not do it again.

If a ghost still lingers, it may be best to seek out professional help for a ritual or ceremony. Or, alternatively, remove yourself from the space by moving out.

It’s been a decade since COVID-19 reached our shores, ushering in 45 years of hand sanitizer, remote learning and face mask protesters sporting apostrophe-addled signs like “Your an idiot” and “Parent’s against masks”.

But now it’s October. Halloween is at risk.

S*** just got real.

Nothing could be scarier than 2020, with its earthquakes and hurricane-force winds and rising COVID infection rates and elections, but Halloween isn’t just about fear. Halloween is the one day a year conservative moms can buy push-up bras and dress like lusty dog catchers, guilt free. It’s the day Snickers for breakfast and Reese’s for lunch are appropriate meals. It’s the day politically-inappropriate celebrities get tagged on social media.

But COVID changed everything. Los Angeles prohibited trick-or-treating along with haunted house venues, Halloween carnivals and other spooky activities. After a swift and furious backlash from parents who need to give their kids ONE thing to look forward to this year, the city backed down and “recommended” common sense. Like that’s a thing.

Even then, it’s gonna take a lot to scare our children anymore in 2020. They spent months locked in the house, learning fractions online and wearing face masks to the grocery store. Their stress levels are sky-high and adrenal fatigue has caused weepy breakdowns and heartbreaking acceptance.

On the bright side, COVID-19 ushered in a whole new series of costumes for the holiday, including coronavirus outfits, teachers in hazmat suits and the very funny Elsa in a plastic bubble.

I think I’ll dress up as a mail-in ballot since that seems to be the most terrifying thing in the country today. (Sidenote: Vote on Nov. 3. Vote by mail, vote in person, drop your vote off in a ballot box. I don’t

care how you vote. Crawl through a lake of spiders, a graveyard of zombies - just vote!)

The CDC issued COVID-19 risk categories, pertaining to Halloween activities. The lowest risk is a virtual festival where celebrations are held on Zoom because we just can’t get enough of Zoom, can we? (Sidenote: Has anyone investigated the connection between the coronavirus and Zoom?

Hmm??)

Moderate risk includes small gatherings where individuals stay apart from each other and wear those Halloween masks from the ‘70s because there is no way germs (or breath) will get through that thick plastic.

Higher risk activities will be your social distanced haunted houses where vampires and witches stand six feet away and snarl the horrible things they’d do if they could just get a little closer. That horrifying thing breathing down your back is the lo-

Posing the highest risk are large, in-person, nomask gatherings made popular in places like Utah and Washington Counties. (Sidenote: Idiots.)

People have tried to ruin Halloween for centuries. The latest attempt was the introduction of Trunk-or-Treat, which should be banned in all 50 states for its mediocre contribution to the holiday, so I don’t think COVID will stop Halloween enthusiasts. Some people find Halloween offensive, with its glittery bats and baby werewolves. But everything is offensive this year. If something didn’t offend someone in 2020, did it really happen?

I guess we’ll see if people party safely this Halloween when COVID results start rolling in two weeks later. I’ll stand outside your hospital room with signs like, “I wish youd listened” and “Your an imbecile”.l
