IN HONOR OF SENIORS WHO COULDN’T PLAY IN 2020

H

ours before finding out news that would change the season for the Cottonwood boys soccer team in an instant, head coach Dominic Militello gathered his boys in a circle on a cloudy day in March 2020 and talked to them.

“One of the last things we told our kids after the second preseason game was to make sure they don’t take anything for granted,” Militello said. “Always show up with a perfect attitude and a perfect effort because you never know if you have a season ending injury or if someone takes your spot in the lineup.”

A few days after that team talk, the 2020 season was officially declared over for the Cottonwood boys. COVID-19 took all the spots in the lineup. At that point, added Militello, talk turned to what the team should do next.

“The coaching staff got together after a week of being in shock that the season was canceled and started talking how we could best honor those seniors who didn’t get a senior season (and everything that goes along with being a senior),” Militello said.

They came up with some wild ideas, one being that Militello wouldn’t cut his hair until the team resumed play in 2021—though he would come out of it looking like Slash of Guns N’ Roses, he joked. After brainstorming a few other ideas, they settled on a different one.

the game, their teammates, or competition for granted,” said Militello, a former pro and college (UNLV) star who has been involved with some aspect of Cottonwood’s soccer program now for several years.

Militello said he and the staff then presented the idea to the players a few days later in a Zoom meeting in early April during the lockdown.

“We made the announcement to them and they all started to clap and some tears were shed,” said Militello, and added that his returning players feel a real sense of responsibility to these 2020 seniors to make the 2021 season one that they’ll all look back on with pride and admiration.

Playing for those seven 2020 seniors, Militello added, and playing well in a new region is the primary objective when the 2021 season begins in mid-March, because for guys like Naveed Hassan and Abdi Hamadi and Ryelee Penny, their final high school season was cut short. SSL family survives freak accident but are living with nothing

n Feb. 5, Juana Beatriz “Betty” Segura and her two girls held a press conference in front of their damaged apartment.

While the family of six was eating some food and Jennifer, a fourth-grade student at Lincoln Elementary, was working on her Chromebook, a car crashed through their basement apartment on Jan. 22. The car hit with such an impact that it sailed through their apartment, crashing through the front door, and came to rest in the apartment breezeway in the Covewood Apartments.

“We were having dinner at the table when we saw this car come through the window. It hit the table and our couch. Jennifer and the baby were pinned under it,” Segura said.

Segura’s husband quickly got Jennifer and the baby away from the car. Jennifer’s older sister, Citlalli, age 14, pulled her across the street because of a possible gas leak.

Jennifer was the worst off with leg, neck and head injuries. She still must wear a rigid neck collar for another two weeks.

This situation means the family is sleeping on the floor on two air mattresses they could purchase. They sit on the floor to eat. A friend at Segura’s work provided some clothing for the family.

“When it comes to the apartment, they aren’t doing much. The management gave us an apartment, but they are still charging us rent,” Segura said. “They don’t understand that I had to pay for a hotel for a week where we went after the accident.”

Segura mentioned they still need to buy food and other necessaries. Since the tragedy, they are also behind on utilities.

“My employer has helped me. They have been very nice to me. They helped me set up a GoFundMe account,” Segura said. “They also give me time off work whenever I needed to and told me I can have more days as long as Jennifer needs help. They have been wonderful.”

At this point, there is no time frame when the family can get into their old apartment.

Community Resource Sgt. Bill Hogan and Neighborhood Watch/Business Community Officer Chad Keller delivered a donated bed, nightstand and lamp. They have also collected other items for the family.

Other community resources are donating other furniture such as a couch and dining table after seeing the news report.

Inner City Missionaries of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints are helping with clothing and small household items.

They provided a Deseret Industries order for the family along with gathering clothing and baby items. They provided a Bishop’s Order for Commodities for food and baby supplies.

Bicycle lanes coming to 500 West

A

t the Jan. 27 South Salt Lake City Council work meeting, Dennis Pay, city engineer, and Amalia Andrews from UDOT, presented the 500 West reconstruction project plans for between 3300 South and 3900 South.

Pay explained that 50 years is the average age of pavement. Acceptable maintenance practices extend the life. However, truck traffic beats up the road.

“The last several years we have seen an increase in truck traffic on 500 West, especially in the area north of Fine Drive, which is primarily light industrial uses,” Pay said.

“The increase in truck traffic has deteriorated the pavement to a point where normal maintenance is ineffective, and the pavement needs to be reconstructed.”

The city received about $5 million in federal funding to reconstruct the road.

Glass recycling may arrive in SSL by springtime

The program is an opt-in program. Residents would sign up on an SSL dedicated Momentum website. Residents can receive a reminder by using the mobile app or by phone, text or email.

A Momentum bin is delivered within 7-10 days. Momentum will collect the glass monthly, most likely not on the regular trash day.

“We have found when we try to match them up, residents complain about too many trucks in the neighborhood,” Jason Utgaard, general manager of Momentum Recycling, said.

The service is month by month, and there is no contract. Residents will receive a bill directly from Momentum.

Momentum suggested a monthly fee of $8 and a one-time activation fee of $25. The amounts might change when the program starts. There is no cost to the city.

The city is also providing large glass recycling bins if residents would instead like to bring their glass recycling to a public container for free. Locations are still in discussion.

urbside glass recycling is coming to SSL. While the city is working on the details, the program was presented in general terms to the South Salt Lake City Council at their Jan. 27 work meeting. All parties are hoping for the program to start in April.

Momentum Recycling in Salt Lake City presented a program used in 11 cities along the Wasatch Front. They hope to expand into seven additional cities, including SSL, in 2021.

How to make it happen

The city will need to sign a contract with Momentum Recycling making them the city’s authorized contractor for glass recycling. This contact will not affect the current garbage collection contract with Ace. Currently, Ace has no interest in providing such a service to residents.

Since this is a contract, SSL is required to seek bids from all interested parties, which might mean a more protracted rollout.

Besides, SSL needs to make some minor changes to the city code. Under the city code titled Household Waste Collection (13.72), glass needs to be reclassified from unacceptable to acceptable. Also, section 13.72.200 (A) needs to allow an opt-in service for glass recycling.

How glass is recycled

When the glass arrives at the Momentum processing plant, the first step is the sorting stations. Employees remove non-glass items and sort the glass as clear or colored.

For the next step, glass is broken into

coarse particles by 24 hammers, each a forearm’s size.

Glass pieces go through a trommel that sorts the glass into 3/8-inch and 3/4-inch sizes. Fans also propel paper labels into a paper recycling bin. Non-glass items that can’t fit through the screens, such as corks and caps, are collected and recycled.

Glass particles travel through a bed drier with air heated to 190 degrees Fahrenheit.

This process burns off sugars and bacteria.

Label glue is loosened. The residue that floats to the top is sucked away by a vacuum system.

The glass goes through the primary rotary screen. Screens are changed to produce different size grades for a variety of customers. Glass particles too big to fit through the screen are sent through the pulverizer. Thirty-six hammers reduce the size. Glass particles are recycled until they fit through the primary screen.

Glass particles go through a secondary rotary screen. Particles are separated into four size grades. The final product, called glass cullet, can range in size from pebbles to sand to even powder.

Some of the glass cullets’ uses include glass container manufacturing, fiberglass manufacturing, abrasives and filler for paint and plastics. l

As SSL develops, the Planning Commission stays busy

E

very municipality has one, but unless you are a land developer or business owner, chances are you have no idea what a Planning Commission does. State Code (Utah Code §10-9a-301) requires a Planning Commission, and Section 302 outlines their power and duties.

“The Planning Commission plays an important role in shaping and implementing the City’s vision for future growth and development. The Planning Commission helps shape how our City will grow, from assistance with the development of general plans and zoning maps to the approval and/or recommendations of approval of future projects,” Laura Vernon, chairperson and District 4 commissioner, said.

There are two essential power and duties. The first is to review and make recommendations to the City Council, which is the City’s legislative body, for a general plan and amendments to the general plan. Currently, SSL is updating their general plan. One purpose of a general plan is to guide city development for the next 20 to 30 years. City staff is still seeking public input at www. sslournextmove.org/.

The second power and duty are land-use regulations such as zoning, subdivision or use policies. Sometimes the Planning Commission is the “Land Use Authority,” which means they are the decision maker. Other times, the City Council is the “Land Use Authority.” City Code determines the difference.

Difference

Alex White, director of Community Development, explained that land-use proposals are categorized as either administrative acts or legislative acts. Administrative act like Conditional Use Permits are reviewed by city staff and presented to the Planning Commission for a final decision. Legislative land-use proposals like rezoning require review by the Planning Commission. The commission makes a recommendation to the City Council, which makes the final decision.

Typically, the City Council follows the recommendation of the Planning Commission, but not always. A recent example is the Strong Used Car lot at 2354 S. State St. Last July, Strong Auto Group asked for a temporary rezoning of the property to operate a used car lot for two years. The issue is the property, which is now vacant, is within the City’s Mixed-use Subdistrict of the Downtown District. High-density and high-intensity redevelopment are planned for this area.

After consideration, the Planning Commission voted not to recommend the temporary rezoning. However, the City Council approved it because of the economic advantage and the two-year limit.

mission roughly organized around the five council districts. In some cases, there are two commissioners from the same district. There are also two alternates who can form a quorum or replace a member of the commission.

The Mayor appoints them for a four-year term. They also receive advice and consent from the City Council. The longest serving planning commissioner is Jeremy Carter. The shortest serving members are Liz Gabbitas and Clarissa Williams.

When an opening occurs, the Mayor reviews the pool of interested residents. All residents who express an interest are asked to submit a resume and proof of residency.

“Every effort is made to fill seats with residents of diverse professional backgrounds and personal experiences,” Mayor Cherie Wood said. “Additionally, they are made aware of the significant time commitment of serving on the commission.”

What commissioners need to know The Planning Commission deals with very technical information. Here is a brief overview of some of the information:

Zone map

SSL has numerous zones across the city.

Zones, which are also known as districts, define what is allowed and what is not allowed on the land. The purpose and standards are outlined in City Code. Districts might be created to spur economic growth, such as the Downtown District or the Historical and Landmark District protecting such areas as the Historic Scott School.

The obvious example is when an area is zoned R-1 (residential), a large retailer can’t come in and buy the property and build a big box store at 2700 South and 500 East. Another example is the Jordan River District, where the minimum lot areas are 1/2 acre, which means a business can’t build a hotel looking over the river.

However, there are ways around the standards by using zone overlays. An overlay allows different standards to supersede the underlining standards. A case in point is the SSLPD Overlay. This allows the David P. Romrell Public Safety Building to remain on Main Street which is zoned as Commercial Neighborhood or in the case of Strong Auto, a Temporary Transitional Beneficial Use (TTBU) Overlay district was created, so the underlining Downtown District standards were only set aside for two years.

Zones can be large areas or a parcel of land. For example, the Flex District, which runs west of 300 West to the Jordan River and 2100 South to 3900 South, is large.

dustrial uses. On the other hand, the Granite MPMU (Multi-Use) district was created for the northern part of the old Granite High property. This allows precise standards on this property that are not generally required.

Further, this district has a library subdistrict allowing additional standards for the library and property.

Permitted and conditional uses

The Planning Commission is obligated to approve land uses listed in the City Code as permitted or conditional uses. White explained that “These are uses that the Planning Commission and City Council have previously agreed that should be allowed within the specific areas of the City.”

For example, farmers markets are permitted in the Historical and Landmark and City Facility Districts. However, an individual wanting to have a farmers market in the Commercial Corridor District or in the Open Space Districts would need to apply for a Conditional Use Permit (CUP). A CUP allows a person or business to use the property for particular use for a specific time under certain conditions. If the conditions are not met during the time of the permit, the City can revoke the CUP. A CUP can be renewed.

“The only basis that the Planning Commission may use to deny a potential use is on the basis of health, safety, or welfare of

the general public, and even then only may deny if the circumstance that would be detrimental to the health, safety, or welfare’ cannot be mitigated (or managed),” White said.

“The Planning Commission may not deny a potential use that the city has anticipated in the Code just because a group of residents doesn’t like it or doesn’t want the use near their home or children.”

Land Use Matrix

A Land Use matrix is part of the City Code (Title 17, Chapter 3). A variety of uses are listed in the first column. All the districts and overlays are listed on the top row. If a cell is grayed out, the use is not allowed in that district. If there is a “P,” the use is a permitted use, and if there is a “C,” a CUP is required.

How to get involved

Often residents get involved when an excavator is overturning dirt and construction has started. It is too late.

“The best way for residents to interact with the commission is to pay attention to the agendas and provide comments in public hearings that are held,” White said.

Community Development highly recommends when a comment is made, it should be based on facts and not emotion or NIMBY (Not in My Backyard) type thinking. l

Kearns-Saint Ann Promise SSL is place for teens and elementary students

T

he Kearns-Saint Ann (KSA) Promise SSL is one of 14 after-school programs.

The programs are similar, but each is different. In the case of Kearns-Saint Ann, it is the only program with an elementary and a teen program housed in the same location.

The site is also different because it only takes students enrolled at Kearns-Saint Ann Catholic School (439 E. 2100 South).

“Kearns-Saint Ann Catholic School is a Christ-centered, Catholic school serving a very culturally diverse population of students from preschool through eighth grade,” according to their website.

The same is true for the after-school program. The after-school program has students from parts of Africa, with a sizeable Sudanese population. They also have a large group from Hispanic families and students with different Asian backgrounds.

“The program here at this school has a large community of refugee and immigrant families,” Heidi Qin, Promise Center Coordinator for KSA, said, “They make up a majority of our program participants.”

Offerings

Both the teen and elementary programs focus on enrichment and academics. Besides offering homework help, they sponsor a Girl Scouts Troop and STEAM (Science Technology Art Math) programming. They have a Cooking Club. They also provide a Social and Emotional Learning curriculum.

“Our programs are special in that we have smaller groups, and students get to spend more individualized time with staff.

Through the presence of our volunteers and staff, we also offer opportunities for mentorship and college/career awareness,” Qin said.

Typical day

Because of the pandemic, the first activity is symptom and temperature checking. The goal is to make sure everyone is feeling well.

“During this time, we will also check in about their day, their schoolwork, and overall, how they’re feeling that day. It’s a great way to keep updated in every student’s life,” Qin said.

As they settle in, dinner is served to the students. Mealtime allows them to unwind over a hot meal and chat with friends.

After dinner, they go outside to burn off childhood energy. They play basketball or tag. Sometimes, the younger students bring their “class pets” out for some fresh air. The class pets are stuffed animals.

They then head in for the power hour.

Students work on homework or other academic activities if they don’t have any assignments. This time allows students to stay caught up and get one on one help they might not get during their school day.

After the hour, they transition into their activity, which might be an art project or a science project. Their robust Girl Scout troop, Game Club, STEAM programming,

and the “incredibly popular” Cooking Club meet during this time.

“Our teen program could easily run a Michelin star restaurant while creating a comedy routine. I’m waiting for the day they go viral on Tik Tok,” Qin said.

For teens, they participated in “Real Life” which is a mentoring program through Youthlinc. The program teaches social and emotional skills.

While students are checked out, other students take the time to read, study or get more fresh air.

Movie project

For their Fall Family night, both the elementary and teen programs wrote, filmed, and edited their scary movies. They spent weeks writing the script, casting the roles, and rehearsing before starting to film. After the filming, they edited and created a film of their creation. They had a Zoom movie premiere for their friends and family.

In 1955, the orphanage transitioned into Saint Ann’s School. Leadership was transferred from the Sisters of the Holy Cross to the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word.

As the number of Sisters declined in America, lay teachers replaced them. The Sisters continued their involvement until the early 21st century.

In the early 1990s, Saint Ann School was an old building and needed renovation.

Monsignor John J. Sullivan, the pastor of Saint Ann’s Parish, met with the parish council, and the work was commenced.

In 1980, Kearns-Saint Ann was placed on the National Register of Historic Places.

It is also listed on the Utah Division of State History as a historic site.

Cottonwood drill team finishes out of state contention, but won in other ways

ometimes, when you win, you actually lose.

And sometimes, when you lose, you actually win. Actress Rosie Perez said that many years ago in the film “White Men Can’t Jump” after her partner Woody Harrelson lost a pickup basketball game.

In this case, the Cottonwood Chaparrals drill team may have lost at the Region 6 championships on Jan. 21, but they may have won in other more important ways, suggested head coach Nicky Soulier.

“We had the funnest, best time at Region!

Great memories were made,” Soulier said. “We

laughed, we bonded, we performed our routines the best we ever have.”

In a year when so much has changed the overall dynamic of competition itself, sometimes it’s just as good to look at what the players in this game we call life accomplish as people—and not just as participants in a sporting event.

To that end, the Chaparrals received the highest marks, according to their head coach.

Victory is sweet, and to be sure the Chaparrals have won their share of awards over the decades. But sometimes, there’s just as much to be gained from defeat—maybe more than the winning itself.

“I was so proud of the character of my girls. They wished the other teams good luck over and over,” Soulier said. “They told them ‘good job’ and ‘congratulations.’ They were a class act. They were champions in the most important ways.”

They were also champions in the classroom, said Soulier. Hailey Thompson and Ashley Clay both earned Academic All-Region honors, accolades that transfer to lives well beyond any arena.

Next up for the Chaparrals? Tryouts for the 2021-22 season, March 24 at Cottonwood. l

Her-story in SSL—March is Women’s History Month

In 1992, I began working for the City of South Salt Lake in the utility billing office. I didn’t hesitate to apply for the job as I had seen a little bit about city government through one of my friends who was a mayor’s kid. I was a lucky exception to the rule as at that time, most city employees were male, and very few women were found in any elected office or as department heads. Even as I decided to run for mayor, 17 years later, little had Mayor Cherie Wood changed in the gender or ethnic makeup of city employees and leadership. It has been so rewarding to have more females and people of color run for office (and win!) and bring more diversity into the ranks of local leaders, employees and department directors. Our city has changed significantly since then—growing and becoming more and more diverse.

Equity and inclusion have become city priorities, and are the foundation of our Promise SSL department. I am particularly proud of the number of women who have joined our city leadership, and committed to making a better city for ALL. Even the smallest steps and decisions are shaping a new future, which I hope will become a history the next generation can be proud of.

SSL has one of the highest representations of elected women in the state. At present, South Salt Lake has a seven-member City Council, five of whom are women. The Mayor’s Cabinet is now a 50/50 split, up from just one female member a decade ago.

Women are known for wearing all the hats at once, often balancing their work as business leaders, healthcare workers, educators, volunteers and caretakers while being mothers, grandmothers and single heads of households. Women can bring a great breadth of knowledge and a depth of compassion that I believe can truly make a difference.

For the month of March (and every month), honor our local women with recognition, efforts to better support them, and by providing for them a safe platform and a voice in our community.

We’ve been honoring local women when naming new parks and schools. It is an honor to remember Hser Ner Moo with the Promise Park along the S-Line at 500 East, Ida and Laurie with Bickley Park just north of the Columbus Center, and Olene Walker with the new Elementary School in Riverfront. We continue to tell the story that our city values every single person who resides and visits.

By L. Shane Siwik–District 5 For many of us, COVID 19 brought about changes to our lives that a year ago would have seemed unlikely. Social distancing, mask mandates and frequent hand sanitizing were not commonplace. Now, they seem to be our new daily habits.

Many have lost their lives. Others had serious reactions that required hospitalization. Most of us simply were inconvenienced. Yet despite the conditions each had to go through, recovery is happening. Vaccines are being distributed; businesses are more fully reopening; schools are more functional and best of all, the daily cases are decreasing.

The COVID pandemic has challenged us as a society. It has come at a great and ultimate cost for many. But it has not succeeded in defeating us as a community, as a nation or as humanity. We continue to move forward, looking towards the future with optimism.

Soon we will once again appreciate full smiles in strangers now hidden by masks. One day, this pandemic will be over.

One day we will once again feel comfortable in gatherings.

We will attend weddings and funerals of loved ones and go to more social functions in person. One day Zoom meetings will diminish and be replaced by in person interaction.

The human spirit is strong and allows us to persevere.

But it also allows us to find hope. One day, despite all of our losses, we will say, “We beat this pandemic. It did not beat us.”

Public Safety She’s Got the Right Stuff Message from SSL Police Chief Jack Carruth The SSLPD recognizes achievements of women across national, cultural, economic, ethnic or political spheres. Our department is fortunate to have some amazing women in the field and in office supporting the daily operations of the department and our community. Here’s a call out to five outstanding female officers.

SERGEANT WINTERS Starting as a Patrol Officer with the University of Utah, Sergeant Winters now has over two decades of Law Enforcement experience, including 23 years with SSL. She has served in SSL as: Patrol Officer, Community Resource Officer, Bike Patrol, Crime Scene Technician, Fire/Arson Investigator, Reserve Officer Supervisor, K9 Handler, Detective, Motor Officer, Field Training Officer, and currently Patrol Sergeant.

Her professional certifications include CIT Officer, Incident Command Systems, Firefighter I and II, Hazmat Operations and Awareness. Throughout her career, she has received the Chief’s Award, Detective Division Unit Citation, and various commendations. Off duty, she enjoys traveling by motorcycle and spending time with her horse Bailey.

OFFICER GENCARELLA Officer Gencarella has worked for South Salt Lake since 2012.

Her first three years were working in patrol. She transferred to the Community Resource Unit in 2015, and worked with the DARE and GREAT summer camp programs for both elementary and middle school students. In 2018, she transferred to the Detective

Division, and as an Internet Crimes Against Child Affiliate is assigned to work with youth invovled sex crimes.

OFFICER JOHNSON Officer Johnson started her career in law enforcement in 2014 with Unified Police dispatch. In 2017, Officer Johnson was hired with the Salt County Sheriff’s Office as a deputy for their Public Safety Bureau and worked with Youth Services. She was awarded the unit citation award for her dedicated work. She joined SSL in 2018 as a patrol officer. Officer Johnson continues to take every opportunity to expand her knowledge to better serve those in our community.

OFFICER WARNER Officer Warner has been in law enforcement for 15 years.

She serves as the role of a crisis negotiator with the combined Unified Police Department S.W.A.T team and the Street Crimes Unit. Because of her continual commitment to excellence, Officer Warner received the Chief of Police Star award in 2017.

OFFICER SNOW Officer Snow attended the police academy in 2016 at age 37 after being a stay at home mom for 15 years to follow her lifelong dream of becoming a police officer. She was hired by Sandy PD after obtaining her Special Function Officer Certification, working as a bailiff and completing her Law Enforcement Officer certification. In April of 2020 she joined the SSLPD and has loved every minute of protecting and serving SSL.

SSL Fire Stations Highlight Female Firefighters Message from Fire Chief Terry Addison Firefighting as an industry has been male-dominated.

Women as firefighters, while only making up a small percentage, have been in rank for almost 200 years of the fire service in the U.S. We know that gender and racial diversity greatly improves organizations and helps address the needs of the public better. With a small but growing number, I am proud to state that we currently have nine female firefighters. The national average is between 4-5% and the SSLFD is slightly above this at 14%. Two of our nine female firefighters currently serve as Captains in combat officer roles.

Three senior female members of our team have over 42 years of experience in our department. In my opinion, as women firefighters their strength is in mentoring co-workers. Other strong attributes they bring to the SSLFD are compassion, physical stamina and strength, detailed medical and technical fire and rescue knowledge. I have witnessed that our female firefighters have enormous intellectual, social and emotional skills that are paramount in delivering the highest possible care to our community.

While it’s no secret the firefighting profession has been seen as one dominated by physical strength, the truth is women meet these physical challenges just as well. Being a firefighter goes beyond just brute strength, it requires a complex mix of skills and traits and the women of South Salt Lake Fire are a testament to the breaking of this glass ceiling. Bravo to the women of the South Salt Lake Fire Department!

Promise Not Just For Kids—How Promise Serves Our Community How did afterschool programs become such an important part of our community? Mayor Cherie Wood explains, “As a single parent, I was among a crowd of parents who work and were in need of a helping hand in raising children that are prepared for the future.”

The Promise SSL programs were created to support our youth and their families, who often face a myriad of challenges.

Promise at the Central Park Community Center In January, the Central Park Community Center (CPCC) with the help of The Movement Center kicked off its first youth cheer clinic and a great addition to the Center’s regular programming throughout the week. Participating youth are able to learn the basics of cheerleading and movement and, in under two hours, were able to fully execute a cheer routine! Quite impressive for a group of beginners.

I

f the Cottonwood boys basketball team is taking a page from the Utah Jazz, then it’s no surprise that the Colts have been the most unselfish in many years. The Jazz have taken a quantum leap thanks to extraordinary team balance and so has Cottonwood.

“That program is taking a huge step forward,” explained Greg Southwick, Cottonwood athletic director. “And it all begins with the coach we have.”

The Colts finished the season 10-11 overall with the No. 18 seed in the Class 5A RPI. The real reason for this near-.500 record may have just as much to do with what the players have done to buy into the ideas head coach Marc Miller is proposing.

Looking over the season statistics bears out this theory that there has been a significant buy-in by the players. For example, the team only has one senior starter—Andre Cooper—and he has accepted more of a secondary role in terms of scor-

ing.

Several juniors and a sophomore top Cooper as far as scoring goes, led by junior Noah Widerburg, who at 16.8 points per game is one of the top 10 scorers in Class 5A. The balance doesn’t stop there, however. Sophomore Aiden Oliphant averages 10.8 points per game and junior Cooper Lindsey is contributing 10 points as well.

Another reason for Cottonwood’s success may come from Cooper, who as a senior has become the team’s primary playmaker, averaging six assists per game, which is fourth-best in Class 5A. Oliphant is in the top 10 Class 5A best in rebounding and blocked shots, and Lindsey is one of the state’s best three-point shooters.

All told, this balance is contributing to what has already been a season to remember for Cottonwood, before turning its attention to a state tournament appearance on Feb. 24 (after press deadline). l

ver the years, the way the Cottonwood swimmers prepare for their state tournament surge is a slow but deliberate build, head coach Ron Lockwood said back in 2019.

As the meets go on, each swimmer is given a list of todo’s—the first being the most important: build up your endurance. Next, work on your technique.

And finally, shave down your finish times until your body is sculpted, your mind is sharp and you are ready to explode from the starting line, shimmering in the waters of the BYU Natatorium on a Saturday in late February, your eye on that ultimate prize.

Cottonwood senior Jacob Ricci appears to again be ready to contend for state individual titles in several disciplines later this month, building into that championship form.

At the South Davis Aquatic Center in Bountiful on Feb. 6, Ricci sped to a Region 6 championship, winning the 100 free-

style with a time of 47.28, then took another Region 6 title home to Cottonwood Heights with a victory in the 100 backstroke, touching the wall in 51.99.

The Colts boys also qualified for state in the 200 medley relay, finishing in second place with a time of 1:38.47.

On the girls side, three swimmers qualified for state, most notably Lily Cole who finished third in both the 50 freestyle and 100 freestyle. Natty Alonso did so with a third place finish in the 100 backstroke, as did Adessa Talbot in the 200 individual medley with her bronze medal.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, the Class 5A state tournament will be held at a new venue, the Wasatch Aquatic Center in Heber City Feb. 1920.

South Salt Lake recreation holds first kids’ sporting event under strict safety guidelines

n the final night, the kids ran around the field at Central Park kicking their new soccer balls, joy splashed across their faces as they occasionally stopped to take selfies on their phones to celebrate their participation.

“The parents were just super thankful their kids could get out and do anything,” said South Salt Lake recreation coordinator Dustin Permann, who organized the soccer skills clinic with eight other staff members that ran from Sept. 28 to Oct. 21, 2020.

Normally, a sentence about kids kicking a ball around with other kids wouldn’t hold any significance, but if you lived in the city and weren’t able to play outside or wear a team uniform for months due to an orange threat level that persisted well into the summer of 2020, you might be excited, too—especially if you had to adhere to such a rigid set of rules just to be able to play the game you loved.

For starters, that ball the kids got for participating was thanks to a donation from Real Salt Lake and couldn’t be shared with anyone except for the two family members they brought with them on this special, season-ending night in the year there was no season.

Due to strict health and safety restrictions, there also wasn’t a professional photographer on-site. Instead, city staff did everything they could to make the kids experience as normal as possible, even setting up two photo booths at which staff took fun photos of the children and their families —using the families’ own phones—starting with the youngest players first.

“We set up a backdrop that was pretty professional looking,” said Permann, and added the parents really appreciated having this to cap this historic event.

Soccer skills and drills with sanitizer Every Monday and Wednesday night without fail, those 40 kids and their families came, like soldiers in a war they already knew too much about. Hailing from places like Somalia and Bosnia-Herzegovina, and from El Salvador and Syria— from every battle-scarred corner of the globe, they all lined up in their masks at the entrance to Central Park, where a city official administered temperature checks to each child and family member at a check-in table.

The kids’ parents were emailed links in advance to the drills their children would perform at the clinic to make sure nobody felt uncomfortable, said Permann.

groups that rotated between skill stations set up across six fields. The first two weeks were dedicated to learning basic soccer skills through fun learning games and drills, while the last two weeks consisted of more intensive practices and drills.

Each session was led by members of the city’s recreation staff, who used a special spray wand to sanitize each piece of equipment after every skill station. Handshakes and high fives were not allowed due to health and safety guidelines, but from a safe 6-foot physical distance from one another, kids “let out a loud cheer at the end of every drill which they really enjoyed,” added Permann.

Masks were encouraged for spectators and for players when they were not engaging in soccer activities. Spectators were limited to two per child and asked to keep a 6-foot physical distance from those outside their household. In addition to the guidelines set in place by city officials, two hand washing stations with running warm water and soap were available onsite along with hand sanitizer and sanitizing wipes.

“Everybody was really respectful of all the rules we had in place,” said Permann, who added that the department had to have all hands on deck—including top department administrators—just to be able to make sure the four-week event went off without a hitch.

“I think when people saw how careful

we were and how much fun the kids had, they were surprised,” he said. “Most of the kids stayed in their lines and all of the parents were good about everything—just grateful their kids could participate.”

Most recreational programs postponed The soccer clinic was a long culmination of efforts by SSL recreation coordinator Aaron Wiet to provide recreational outlets for area kids in what has been a trying year for him and other city officials.

He first sat in on spring meetings with the Utah Parks Recreation Association trying to make sense of this new normal, and apprised officials of his situation—the city was at an “orange level” then, making it impossible for his department to safely hold any in-person events even while other cities were planning to relaunch their recreation programs. In June, after Wiet received the go-ahead for his department to safely hold an adult softball league, it too had to be canceled just as soon as it started due to a positive COVID-19 case that was unrelated to any league participant but was discovered within the city limits.

Wiet then made the decision that his department would be “postponing all recreational sports and activities until we feel it is safe to congregate.” In early fall, the department was again given the green light after the city’s threat level dropped from orange to yellow to hold the soccer clinic. The department followed guidance from the COVID-19 Task Force, of which

Wiet was a member, using the COVID-19 Event Planning Template provided by the state of Utah, as well as advisements from Salt Lake County Health Department officials.

The clinic’s turnout of 40 kids was down significantly from the 200 or so who usually participate in the fall soccer season, but this massive drop in turnout isn’t a new phenomenon. In fact, the significant drop is in line with the current national average in cities like South Salt Lake, added LA84 Foundation President and CEO Renata Simril earlier this year in a statement. “COVID-19 is putting poor, minority communities on the margins,” she said.

For the department, this free soccer skills clinic in fall 2020 would be the only in-person event for kids it’s been able to hold after March 2020. On Jan. 12, 2021, the department announced that it would be unable to offer a Jr. Jazz basketball league at press time.

“I wish I had some better news, but unfortunately it is not looking good for in-person basketball this winter season,’ said Permann in an email to city officials.

“We are restricted on access to gym space in city and district buildings, and will most likely wait to hold in person Jr. Jazz until November [2021].”

For the 25 kids who pre-registered before the announcement, Permann added they will all be able to call ahead and make appointments to pick up their items—Jazz basketball, Jazz mask and other items— from the Columbus Center in person because it’s currently closed to the public.

“In the meantime, the kids are more than welcome to use the outdoor courts at Central Park if they’d like,” Permann said.

Permann admitted he is frustrated not being able to hold any further in-person events until at least mid-March—when T-ball and baseball are set to begin, weather permitting—but added he was grateful for the opportunity to work with the kids again, especially during such unique circumstances, and was happy with department efforts to provide these kids with a safe and fun experience.

“The little things we’ve done have gone a long way to help these kids,” he said. “We still get a few calls from parents every day, looking for information; they’re bummed because their kids are bored and frustrated being stuck inside their homes playing video games, but I feel like there’s a light at the end of the tunnel. As soon as we get back outside, it’s game on.” l

Fostering saves lives in more ways than one

nimal shelters and rescues around the country have reported an increase of people fostering animals during the pandemic. Fostering provides room for shelters to take in more animals and helps place the animal in a well-fit forever home.

Christelle Del Prete works for Best Friends Animal Society with their sanctuary in Kanab and shelters and networks around the country, including their Best Friends Lifesaving Center in Sugar House. “Pets thrive in homes, not shelters,” she said. “And it’s a beautiful thing when communities come together to care for their homeless animals as so many people have done during the pandemic.”

Even nearly one year into the pandemic, many people still find themselves working or going to school fully or partially remotely, so this increase in time at home certainly is a contributing factor to both increases in adoptions and fostering. For the foster family of a 9-month-old mixed breed dog, Hugh, a medical foster from Salt Lake County Animal Services, this was the case with all three members of the family working or attending school at least partially remotely.

Hugh came to Salt Lake County Animal Services as a stray with a hip injury that he had “for a good amount of time,” and required surgery. After the surgery that the shelter provided, Hugh needed to receive physical therapy, time to heal, and encouragement to use his back leg again, so he was placed in a foster home where they could make this commitment.

In addition to helping Hugh heal, his foster family helped to further determine

information a potential adopter might be interested in, such as was he good with other dogs, good with children, afraid of men or people in general, good with cats, and so on.

Also how well trained he was, how well he did riding in the car, how well he walked on a leash, how well he did in a crate both during the day and at night, and if he had any signs of separation anxiety.

In Hugh’s case, he seemed to do well with everyone and everything, which surprised one of his fosters, Matt Ackley of Sandy. “I had wrongly assumed since he was a stray that he would require a lot more behavioral training, but he truly is an amazing dog, especially considering his circumstances and young age.”

Since Hugh made tremendous progress in his recovery and proved to be a great example of how resilient and loving animals can still be even when humans initially fail them, he was able to meet with a potential adopter ahead of schedule. When it was deemed a good fit, the adoptive family agreed to continue his therapy, and he went to his new forever home after only three weeks post-surgery and with his foster. Ackley said that one concern he had about fostering was that their child, a second-grader, would get too attached especially because she was one of the main caretakers of Hugh, and they developed a quick and close bond, but it helped that she got to meet the new adoptive family that included two young girls around her age. She knew upon meeting them that they would continue to love and take care of Hugh like she did.

“Because more and more people are opening their hearts and homes to homeless pets, I truly believe we can put an end to the unnecessary killing of cats and dogs in our country’s shelters and begin to celebrate all the precious lives we’ve saved,” Del Prete said.

Take care of your mental and social health during COVID

The other day I was talking with my husband and we were both commenting on how we’ve felt a bit of depression set in from this long COVID year. We all need human interaction to thrive, and with health challenges, financial pressures, political unrest, and so much uncertainty, it’s no wonder that many of us feel a little down. I wanted to share some tips from Salt Lake County’s Health Department on how to improve or maintain your mental and social health as we head into the final stretch.

Take breaks from the news and social media - It is important to stay informed, but constantly hearing about the pandemic or politics is exhausting and upsetting. Limit your news and social media intake to once a day or every other day.

Practice Mindfulness – Set aside time every day (even for five minutes) to be in the present moment. You can do this by meditating, journaling, or focusing on your breathing.

Go outside for 30 minutes every day– Bundle up and get outside. Being outdoors is a natural antidepressant as sunshine naturally increases serotonin and endorphins that boost energy and reduce pain.

Get enough sleep – Stick to a regular sleep schedule and give yourself extra wind-down time each night before bed to read, stretch, and/or meditate to ensure quality sleep.

Stay in touch – Be intentional with your connections by scheduling regular video chats, phone calls, or text messages with loved ones.

Try online exercise classes – Salt Lake County Parks and Rec are hosting online exercise classes for all activity levels. Check out the schedules at slco.org/parks-recreation.

Take Virtual Tours with loved ones – The Utah Hogle Zoo, Utah Museum of Contemporary Art, The Leonardo, and the Tracy Aviary all offer virtual experiences to enjoy with family and friends.

After reviewing this list, I have to admit that I need to do better on my sleep habits. And keeping my cell phone next to my bed is probably not helpful. One thing we did this past summer is welcomed our first pet (fish excluded) into our family. Ripley, our mini goldendoodle puppy, has forced us out for walks every day, and she’s kept life interesting during the pandemic. Some of my favorite memories have been Zoom calls with the entire Winder or Newton extended family so we could catch up and hear how everyone was doing.

This pandemic will only break down our mental health and friendships if we let it, so take active steps to stay engaged, integrate healthy behaviors, and connect with our loved ones. Like a mother in a Disney movie, my cell phone died inexplicably. Well, not inexplicably. I dropped it in the toilet.

I was wearing jeans for the first time in seven months and had the phone in my back pocket when it promptly fell into the commode. My phone, not my back pocket.

There’s a universal response when you drop your phone in liquid; you reach in and grab the damn thing. It could be submerged in molten lava or boiling oil; you will instinctively reach for the phone at the expense of ever using your hand again.

Snatching it up, I screamed several unprintable words and resorted to 15 minutes of “No, no, no, no, no!” I shook my phone, blew in it, prayed over it and dashed home to dump it in a bowl of rice. (A robot on Mars can send information to NASA but I have to submerge my phone in rice because it got wet.)

I thought, this would make a great Instagram post and frantically looked for my phone so I could take a picture of my phone sitting in a bowl of rice.

But I was phoneless. I reached for my phone nonstop. I absently grabbed the TV remote, trying to scroll through Tik Tok. I picked up my computer mouse to check the time. I kept patting my leggings where my cell phone used to be, frisking myself like some weird felon.

I realized I’m obsessed with how many steps I walk. I’m preoccupied with social media. I’m dependent on my phone to give me instant info. If I wanted to order from Amazon, I had to go into ANOTHER ROOM and use my computer.

After 24 hours, I turned on my phone.

Nothing.

Minutes later, I was kicking in the door at my cell phone company, begging them to fix my phone. They know me well because, having been bitten by a radioactive clutz, I break my phone often. But this time, they just shook their head and called the time of death.

The typical cell phone weighs four or five ounces but after a day without my phone, I felt weightless. After two days I could talk to my husband without furtive glances at my phone. After three days, I didn’t miss playing Words with Friends.

I swore when I got my phone back, it wouldn’t control me anymore.

Then I got my phone back. I listened to all the podcasts, played all the games, bought everything on Amazon and beat my family at Words with Friends. I ignored my husband, tuned out the world in general and scrolled endlessly through social media platforms.

The lesson here should be turn off your phone and interact with the real world. But what I learned was I need to buy cargo pants with dozens of secure pockets so my phone will never fall into the toilet again.

IN HONOR OF SENIORS WHO COULDN’T PLAY IN 2020

ours before finding out news that would change the season for the Cottonwood boys soccer team in an instant, head coach Dominic Militello gathered his boys in a circle on a cloudy day in March 2020 and talked to them.

“One of the last things we told our kids after the second preseason game was to make sure they don’t take anything for granted,” Militello said. “Always show up with a perfect attitude and a perfect effort because you never know if you have a season ending injury or if someone takes your spot in the lineup.”

A few days after that team talk, the 2020 season was officially declared over for the Cottonwood boys. COVID-19 took all the spots in the lineup. At that point, added Militello, talk turned to what the team should do next.

“The coaching staff got together after a week of being in shock that the season was canceled and started talking how we could best honor those seniors who didn’t get a senior season (and everything that goes along with being a senior),” Militello said.

They came up with some wild ideas, one being that Militello wouldn’t cut his hair until the team resumed play in 2021—though he would come out of it looking like Slash of Guns N’ Roses, he joked. After brainstorming a few other ideas, they settled on a different one.

the game, their teammates, or competition for granted,” said Militello, a former pro and college (UNLV) star who has been involved with some aspect of Cottonwood’s soccer program now for several years.

Militello said he and the staff then presented the idea to the players a few days later in a Zoom meeting in early April during the lockdown.

“We made the announcement to them and they all started to clap and some tears were shed,” said Militello, and added that his returning players feel a real sense of responsibility to these 2020 seniors to make the 2021 season one that they’ll all look back on with pride and admiration.

Playing for those seven 2020 seniors, Militello added, and playing well in a new region is the primary objective when the 2021 season begins in mid-March, because for guys like Naveed Hassan and Abdi Hamadi and Ryelee Penny, their final high school season was cut short.
