MURAL ARTIST BRINGS SOUTHERN UTAH SCENE TO SOUTH SALT LAKE WALL

O

n a perfect spring evening, over 3,500 people stroll along the small streets in the Creative Industry Zone of South Salt Lake to enjoy food, music, and 10 new murals during Mural Fest 2022. With the new 10, the total number is 45 murals.

“We are thrilled with the communities excitement and interest in public art in South Salt Lake. Our outdoor gallery continues to garner national attention, and we look forward to highlighting additional artists in the years to come,” Julie Taylor, communications and outreach manager for South Salt Lake, said.

This year artists came from as far away as Hungary and Mexico, while others were much closer.

first artist declined the opportunity, so Swanson was asked to paint.

“After trying for five years to get selected, I’m just glad to be involved,” Swanson said.

Participating businesses donate their wall and roughly about 25% of the artist’s stipend. The Arts Council spends a great deal of time trying to find bare walls and businesses wanting to participate.

Once the Arts Council has found the walls and selected the artist, matching the two involves numerous variables. Swanson was selected for the south wall of Superior Grinding along Haven Avenue.

The wall is 120 feet along Haven Avenue and another 17 feet around a corner.

The art After being assigned the wall, Swanson met with the owners of Superior Grinding.

“It turns out that the family has a rodeo legacy in the Moab area,” Swanson said.

Continued from front page Swanson decided to highlight the beauty of Southern Utah along with crows, ravens, cowboys and horses.

“We (Superior Grinding and myself) have agreed to stylistically portray the La Sal Mountain Range as well as red rock formations of Moab, Utah in the background and portray cowboys, horses, crows/ravens, and a hawk in the foreground,” Swanson wrote to the Arts Council.

Swanson stressed the pictures provided were only conceptional. For example, colors, item placement, or size could change.

“I hope people feel movement as they walk up to the painting,” Swanson said.

He says the flow is created by using angles. He does the math in his head.

The artist Swanson is a classically trained artist. He received an art degree from Lewis & Clark College in Oregon. On his website are examples of his murals, paintings, sketches and drawings.

“My art teachers kept telling me to put down the spray paint and pick up a paintbrush,” Swanson said.

They didn’t consider street art as art.

However, Swanson loved creating with spray paint from a young age.

“Spray paint is fast, bold and expressive,” Swanson said. “Besides, I always knew graffiti would become an art form.”

Swanson is a local kid from the Taylorsville area. He started to paint murals full time in 2006. His first public work was at Caputo’s Market and Deli at 15th East and 15th South.

“I’ve tried to take advantage of every opportunity,” Swanson said. “It must work because people see my work and they keep calling.”

Swanson’s father was a mason and taught him how to lay bricks.

“I can read walls, which helps me in my work,” Swanson said.

A unique aspect of Swanson’s painting is the murals are painted freehand. Over the years, it has became common for an artist to use a projector to show their sketch on the wall. Swanson knows what he wants and paints as the picture unfolds before him.

He is a self-professed perfectionist and likes being a one-person show.

Swanson likes to work on numerous projects at once. Besides the Mural Fest mural, he is working on murals at a softball complex in South Jordan.

“I can only work on a project for four or five hours before hitting the wall,” Swanson said.

Swanson is heading to Arizona and Texas when the two projects are completed.

The Process Swanson’s first step was to spray paint the wall. A dark blue on top and a lighter blue on the rest of the surface.

Using black paint, he blocked out the picture. Then, the fun begins.

Just like a paint pallet, Swanson has milk cartons full of spray cans. He also has a bucket full of nozzles that are his brushes. He chooses the right nozzle for the job.

Typically, an artist will have four types of nozzles. Thins are used for small areas, fine details, thin lines, light shading or highlighting. Outlines are medium-sized for solid clean lines. Fats supply a large spray area for painting larger areas. Super Fats are used for very large areas and provide fast output volume.

Besides choosing the correct nozzle, the distance from the wall also changes the volume. Painting close provides a small spray pattern. As Swanson pulls back, he gets a broader spray pattern.

painting is he likes to honor his family in the painting. In this case, there is a mare and two fillies representing his wife and two young girls on the east wall.

“I know the painting is finished in my guts,” Swanson said.

When it is, he puts an antifading clear coat on it. Then, after Mural Fest, South Salt Lake employees put on an anti-graffiti covering that sometimes alters the colors.

After 70 hours, his mural was ready for Mural Fest.

The reaction “It is really cool,” one viewer said.

“It is impressive,” said another.

But one couple said it the best. “We really like the colors, but you can never go wrong with the Southern Utah landscape.” l

Cottonwood FCCLA students to compete at nationals, five place at state

T

wo Cottonwood High Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America club members will be competing for national titles in June after they, and three of their teammates, brought home state medals.

Seniors Georgia Barrus and Lily Lundeen will be representing their school June 29 through July 3 in San Diego in the leadership STAR (Students Taking Action with Recognition) competitive event. Barrus took gold at state and Lundeen, silver.

“We’re both pretty excited to go to nationals together,” Barrus said.

In fashion construction, Mariana Labrador, Sara Sandusky and Annalyse Staker earned silver medals at state. They each sewed different outfits, created presentations that outlined their concepts and process they learned and were able to wear them at the state competition.

FCCLA is a club associated with family consumer sciences and helps youth expand their leadership potential and develop skills for life, such as planning, goal-setting, decision-making and interpersonal communication.

As part of the club, Cottonwood’s 25 FCCLA members have focused on service and often have teamed up with other clubs to do projects, such as the school’s version of Festival of Trees, trunk-or-treat and a thankyou letter campaign to teachers, said Zahaia Cuevas, the club’s first-year adviser and second-year family and consumer sciences teacher.

“We do a lot of community and schoolwide service projects,” she said. “We’re teaching students they can make a positive impact in the community, even if it’s by doing something small like writing a thank-you.”

Since November, FCCLA students could begin preparing for competition.

In the leadership category, Barrus and Lundeen were able to talk about their leadership experience they’ve gained through their high school years, show how they set goals and worked to meet them, give examples of leaders they admire, and complete a self-inventory of their leadership skills and provide it to other leaders to evaluate them.

Lundeen, a Girl Scout, used that as a base of her presentation, Barrus said.

“She was able to really talk about all her Girl Scout leadership experience into her presentation,” Barrus said.

Lundeen, who oversees her chapter’s social media, also brought in communication, social media and time management goals into her event, Cuevas said.

Barrus shared about her five years of experience in mountain biking, including being captain this year; her presidency in both FCCLA and in Cottonwood’s National Honors Society presidency; her internship at a nearby elementary school; and her part-time jobs.

“The judges gave me notes to reflect on and what to improve so I looked at those.

Honestly, I didn’t really think it would go far and because I wasn’t sure if my presentation was good,” she said. “But I really am passionate about it and so I just thought I’m going to see what I can do since I really care about it.”

One piece of advice Barrus said was that she referred to her slides too much since the judges already had read through her presentation beforehand.

“They just wanted to hear my thoughts on it. So that’s what I did for state. I talked what I was involved in and the more I shared, the more I got into it. I talked about how I’m a leader. I talked about mountain biking and how I wasn’t first in every race, but I love it because it encourages me to try my best at every practice and race. I shared with them how I would always try to make sure we’re being inclusive and welcoming with FCCLA and NHS meetings. I talked about how communication is a great part of being a leader and how I used it with my part-time jobs how I work with the public. I talked about my internship and about wanting to be an educator is helping me become a leader in the classroom,” Barrus said.

When she got flashed a one-minute warning in her 10-minute state presentation, Barrus realized she was only half-way through her presentation.

“I jumped to my summary and just talked about how and why leadership affected my life. I just talked about all my achievements and how it has helped make me a great leader.

I quoted John Wooden, ‘Failure is not fatal, but failure to change might be’ —and honestly, that’s the main point. I showed how a leader blossoms. I talked about as a freshman, I was experimenting and trying to figure out what I liked in school, and now as a senior, I’m in full bloom like a flower and have just grown in so many ways,” she said.

As a freshman, Barrus joined FCCLA after learning about it from a teacher.

“I decided it was the best thing ever. I competed my sophomore year in event management and earned gold at region, but then, state got canceled for COVID in 2020,” she said, adding that Cottonwood didn’t compete last year.

After competing at state March 22-23 this year, Barrus was called to stage as the first-place finisher.

“They called ‘Georgia Barrus, gold,’ and I was like, ‘what?’ I was shocked, I was shaking. I was like ‘this is the coolest thing in my life,’” she said.

Now she is preparing for another cool thing—nationals.

my passion and not really referring to every point on my slides. I just want to rework what I say and how I present it,” Barrus said.

Her adviser, who herself placed second nationally in FCCLA when she was a high school student, will help her students prepare.

“I was able to look through their rubrics and look at the judges’ notes and I will go over those with Georgia and Lily before nationals,” she said, adding that in addition to the competition, they will attend leadership workshops and be able to network with professionals and students from across the country. “FCCLA really gives students opportunities to serve school and community and helps them grow as a leader and an individual in areas that they’re passionate.”

Cuevas, who estimates there are 300 students who enroll in Cottonwood’s family and consumer science classes, wants to encourage more students to get involved.

“Some students in my classes are real-

ly good and talented and passionate about sewing, fashion, cooking, children education so I want to encourage them to join FCCLA because we provide opportunities for them to grow,” she said. “I am so proud of my students who competed this year. They all worked really hard. My sewing students, it was their first real articles of clothing they made. They all did lining, buttonholes, collars—and things that are tricky. I think they all learned a lot throughout the while process, and they learned some great skills they’re applying to other projects. I’m proud of Georgia and Lily and the great leaders they are. They have been great FCCLA officers this year and they’re good example to the rest of the club and school. I’m excited for the things they’re going to do after high school; I really think they’re going to some really good things in the world.” l

Mayor addresses goals, accomplishments and kindness in State of the City speech

outh Salt Lake Mayor Cherie Wood gave her 12th State of the City speech during a dinner at the Columbus Center April 25.

Previous to the mayor's speech, the land and meeting was blessed by Councilmember at-large Clarissa Williams, a member of the Navajo Nation. A joint honor guard of SSLFD and SSLPD under the direction of Chief Terry Addison presented the colors. Edward Lopez of Promise SSL, an accomplished singer, sang "What a Wonderful World," a song made famous by Louis Armstrong.

2022 – The Year of the Neighborhood "I hope you feel like you are on my front porch," Wood said at the beginning of her remarks.

She pointed out that the State of the City event was not her day but every resident's day because it is a day for reflection and celebration of the past year.

Because 2021 was an election year, Wood said she

spent more time in the neighborhoods speaking to various SSL residents.

"I learned that no matter your age, your income, or ethnic background, we all want to live in safe and vibrant neighborhoods," Wood said. "One of my three primary goals for South Salt Lake is to be a city of strong and amazing neighborhoods. And we are doing it!"

Wood listed 11 unique neighbors: Granite Legacy, Central Park, S-Line, Fitts Park, Mill Creek, Meadowbrook Station, Southgate, Water Tower, Downtown, Jordan River, and Riverfront. The city created fun lawn signs for residents to display. They are available at city hall.

Wood highlighted the creation last year of the Department of Neighborhoods, headed by Sharen Hauri.

This reorganization puts city services under one roof, such as parks, facilities, and code enforcement. She encouraged residents needing help to contact the new

Neighborhood Ambassador Abbey Sherlock. Sherlock directs people to the correct department and promptly makes sure the issue is resolved.

Wood spoke about the developing SSL downtown with the opening of South City office space and the eight-story mixed-use building under construction.

"But perhaps the most exciting downtown news is the area where 11 developers have joined forces to create a half-billion dollars in investment right here in South Salt Lake. Residents will see more construction cranes at one time than ever before in our city's history.

And the result will be a mix of retail, housing, office, and our city's first tech campus," Wood said.

In addition, Wood mentioned the new Granite Library opening in June and multiple ways the city is becoming greener.

Wood moved to her second goal for South Salt Lake: continued efforts to be a city that truly invests in

people. Off the top, she spoke about the 13 community centers serving youth and young adults. Next, she highlighted Promise SSL after-school programs.

"If Promise was the 1.0 version of investing in people, our exciting new Community Opportunity Center is the 2.0 version, officially opening this summer," Wood said. "I'm so excited about this new space at our Columbus Community Center that will be a launchpad for people to invest in themselves. The Co-op, as we call it, will offer co-working space and resources for financial empowerment, digital access, and supporting job and career growth and entrepreneurship."

Wood also announced an expansion of the Mill Creek Trail and other outdoor investments. In addition, she committed to having more "Mondays with the Mayor" in 2022. Her goal is to hold one in all 11 neighborhoods.

The mayor ended the speech by talking about her third goal—celebrating South Salt Lake. She outlined her top five SSL things to celebrate: 1. Our diversity.

2. The entrepreneurial spirit thriving in our growing Creative Industries Zone.

3. Let's celebrate all the new businesses making South Salt Lake home.

4. Let's celebrate events like tonight that are so important in bringing residents and businesses together.

5. Great neighbors.

"Let's make 2022 the best year in South Salt Lake's amazing history. I know we can," Wood said.

"Since it is the year of the neighborhood in SSL, I would like to encourage each of you to perform one kind act a day in your neighborhood. It could be as simple as a smile, a wave, picking up garbage, or helping with yard work. Imagine how powerful and contagious with one kind act leading to another." l

Proposed budget’s primary objectives include neighborhoods, walkability and infrastructure; but comes with tax hikes

s part of the FY2023 budget cycle, Mayor Cherie Wood presented her budget to the City Council on May 11. Now Wood, along with the City Council work together to approve a budget by June 30 or not.

"The final draft will be a collaborative effort combining input from our community, staff, and City Council. I look forward to working with all stakeholders to do what's best for South Salt Lake," said Councilchair Sharla Bynum.

A public hearing on the budget is scheduled for June 8 at 7:30 p.m.

"We are indeed a small city with bigcity issues,” Wood said. “Our infrastructure is aging, our public safety needs are increasing, and the need to retain quality employees is essential to our City's success. Our neighborhoods are in need of investment and improvements. All these items are funded in our municipal annual budget. I encourage residents to contact me or their City Council Representatives with their ideas, concerns, and questions."

The budget and the Strategic plan Crystal Makin, director of finance, tied budget highlights to the city's strategic plan in her presentation to the council. Under the three key initiatives, Makin outlined six objectives.

Objective one is to ensure safe, vibrant, and equitable neighborhoods by • Creating the Homeless Strategies Department • Increase funding for property abatement to secure vacant buildings • Lighting upgrades in McCall Park, Whitlock Park, Fitts Park, and Monarch Weigh Station • Use a grant from Wasatch Regional Council for State Street streetscape improvements • Hire six additional police officers • Add a part-time weekend code enforcement officer • Use funding for addressing sidewalks, curb and gutter repairs, tree trimming, and traffic calming projects.

• Increase funding for the Arts Council • Funding to complete the establishment of the Community Opportunity Center (The Co-op) • Financing for new parks and park upgrades at six parks Object two is to enhance walkability and bike-ability by: • Continue funding for safe sidewalks • Fund sidewalk repair projects at Fitts Park, Bickley Park and Columbus Center • Funding for developing the Urban Forestry Plan and the Mill Creek Stream plan Objective three is to ensure SSL has

This will be funded with a loan from the Department of Water Resources. This requires a rate increase of $1 to pay back the loan.

• Continue funding for Central Valley Reclamation Facility expansion project. A loan was obtained to pay for SSL's assessment, but now it is time to repay the loan requiring a $1 basic rate increase.

•Increase the funds for garbage/recycling carts • Increase the garbage/recycling cart replacement fee • Increase the rental cost of the roll-off dumpster • Increase the budget because of increases in waste collection contract • Establish a stormwater utility fund by implementing a $6 Equivalent Residential Unit. The unit is defined as the amount of nonporous surfaces of a typical home. Most residents will pay $6.

• Budgeting $3.5 million for land acquisition, engineering, legal, and plat vacating costs for an expanded Public Works Campus Objective four is to address the supply of affordable housing. Currently, this one is still developing, and there are no budget impacts.

Objective five is to enhance green space and parks by: • Adding a part-time Parks Project Manager • Funding for a new dog park • Funding to design a new skate park Objective six is to retain quality employees by: • Funding market adjustments which were highlighted in a citywide salary survey • Increase funding for training in several departments • Funding for improving facilities • Increase employer match in 401(k) to 3% • Rebalance sundry funding across all departments for better equity • Update health insurance plan • Increase salaries for all employees • Implement a Public Service Special (PSS) Revenue Fund, which means all funds in the PSS must be used for public safety purposes. An increase in property taxes will pay for this.

• Increase sworn officers with a 3% cola and a two-step merit increase resulting in an 11% increase • Make civilian employee's wages competitive with a 3% cola and step merit increase resulting in a total of 6% increase • Fund one deputy director and Promise SSL Business Manager The mayor is proposing an $86,429,762 budget, which is an increase from FY2022.

Timothy Webb of local political action committee POET offered a response, "A 45% increase in the city budget, shortly after raising taxes with the Storm Water Fee and giving themselves raises."

Rate increases The mayor's budget contained several rate increases.

• PSS funding required a 0.001029 or 0.1029% property increase. On a $400,000 home, the levy will be $226 a year or $19 a month.

Revenue The primary source of revenue for the city is sales tax. The current rate is 7.45% on goods and services. SSL receives 1.20% of the 7.45% rate. They also receive 0.25% for transportation infrastructure. These specific funds go into the Capital Improvement Fund. Sales tax is projected to continue to increase. The five principle sales taxpayers are Tesla Motors, RC Willey Home Furnishings, Mark Miller Subaru, Salt Lake Valley Chrysler/Jeep, and Border States Industries.

The following source is property tax.

Property tax is an Ad Valorem tax levied against the property's taxable value. In other words, property tax is only levied against a portion of the total value of the property.

Forty-five percent of a property's fair market value is not taxed. This leaves 55%. Receivers of property tax break down to 61.72% for schools, 17.24% for Salt Laake County, 13.34% for South Salt Lake, 4.12% for the library, and 3.58% for utilities. It is estimated that of a $2,533 tax bill based on a $400,000 home, SSL receives $338.

Salt Lake County calculates the Certified Tax Rate for each taxing entity each year. The idea behind the Certified Tax Rate is to maintain an inverse relationship to property tax values. Simply said, as property value goes up, the tax rate goes down.

So, in theory, without new construction, this method of taxation yields approximately the same amount of tax revenue each year.

The city staff proposes to reject the 2022 Certified Tax Rate and maintain the current property tax rate of 0.1536%.

"This is an important step to combat the shrinking revenues that are predicted for current and future years and allow property tax revenues to maintain pace with the expenditures that it pays for," Makin said.

A Truth in Taxation public hearing must be held if the city rejects the Certified Tax Rate and implements the PSS. This changes the balanced budget due date to Aug. 31. The suggested plan is to have the City Council reject the Certified Tax Rate and vote to operate with an interim budget in June. Public notices are posted in July.

Granite School District students are invited to participate in summer music camps

ith summer break rapidly approaching, students and their families are looking for ways to pass the time and beat the heat.

For those students who are interested in music programs, Granite School District has lined up a series of camps where students can learn or refine their skills during the summer months.

Matteo Krause is the music director at Evergreen Junior High School and a championing voice of music summer music programs.

Krause has taught all over the world including in the United States, Turkey, Brazil and China.

Throughout his studies and career, he has been exposed to the music of many cultures and its enriching impact on students’ lives.

“We have an awesome opportunity available for students this summer through the Granite Junior Youth Symphonies program.

Not only does this opportunity allow for students to come together and have fun, but the benefits of learning a musical instrument are widely cited and studied. Music helps build confidence as well as refine important skills that intersect with other pertinent facets of learning,” Krause said.

The Granite Junior Youth Symphony will take place from June 6 through July 1, Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. at Cottonwood High School, 5715 S. 1300 East in Murray.

“The benefit of having the camp take place in the morning is it allows for students to participate on a daily basis. The camp is over and done by 9:30 in the morning. We purposefully work in that time slot so that students have the rest of the day to dedicate to other activities,” Krause said.

At the Granite Youth Symphony students have the opportunity to engage with other like-minded peers, learn a new instrument, or improve on an instrument they’re currently learning. The symphony is taught by qualified teachers and instructors who can allocate the proper time and attention to ensure the student walks away having met their intended goal.

“During these youth symphonies, students will be able to build on the strong foundation they gained already in band and orchestra and continue to advance even further. The Granite Youth Symphonies bring in students from all over our school district and will make for some great collaborations across school boundaries. Please consider having your student take part in this awesome opportunity,” Krause added.

Furthermore, there is a specific opportunity for next year’s incoming sixth-graders. The Granite School Introductory Band and Orchestra Camp will also take place June 6 through July 1. It will also be held at Cottonwood High

School. This particular camp is geared toward students who are looking to learn the basics of a specific instrument. Unlike the youth symphony, which focuses more on a group learning format, the introductory camp allows students to get one-on-one instruction regarding a specific instrument.

Over 300 refugee mothers celebrated at drive-thru event

he Utah Refugee Connection and The Granite Family Engagement Centers sponsored a Refugee Mother’s Day drive-thru celebration May 7 at the Olene Walker Family Engagement Center (3751 S. 900 West).

“We had over 300 mothers come through,” Amy Dott Harmer, Utah Refugee Connection executive director, said.

While most families drove through, other walked through pulling wagons. Mothers received a variety of gifts.

Period underwear “Period poverty is a real thing,” said Bronwyn Newport, a fashion designer and social advocate.

Newport explained that because of a lack of menstrual supplies, women often stay home from work and adolescent girls stay home from school.

Another issue is that in some cultures, using tampons is not acceptable.

It is estimated that nonprofits could spend $30 a month per recipient. Providing reusable period underwear reduces this expense.

Newport gave a $10,000 donation to the Utah Refugee Connection to buy period reusable underwear from Period.co. The garments can be either hand washed or machine washed.

They should last 18 months to three years.

Mothers and adolescent girls received three pairs. The period underwear came with a simple diagram explaining how to use the product.

These products are available at the Granite School District share house or by contacting the Utah Refugee Connection.

As a side note, Newport was one of the leading advocates who spearheaded the effort to get HB162 passed. This new law puts tampons, pads, and other period products in female and unisex bathrooms in Utah elementary, middle and high schools. All products are free and are available starting July 1. The effort is possible through donations from the Larry H. Miller and Gail Miller Family Foundation and the Andrus Family Foundation. School districts will pick up the cost starting in July 2025.

Cookies and water

Thanks to a donation from Sweet Tooth Fairy, each mother and others were given a wrapped cookie and a bottle of water.

Pampering products The Utah Refugee Connection gave away yellow “You Belong Here” bags filled with pampering products such as bath salts, hand creams, perfume and a nail kit.

Live plants The Ken Garff Automotive Group gave away live plants to the mothers. The effort was part of their “We are Hear for You” community outreach initiative. Members of the Garff family and corporate employees handed out the plants. The Ken Garff group paid for the seeds and worked with students at Roots Charter High School to grow them.

Roots Charter High School is Utah’s first farm-based charter high school located at 2250 S. 1300 West in West Valley City. The school’s philosophy, according to their website rootshigh.org, is “A farm demonstrates the most basic relationship humans have to the land.

Students experience the cycles of nature and discover the rewards of hard work and collaboration. They care for plants and animals that, in turn, provide their nourishment. They are involved in matters of life, birth and death. They are responsible for the well-being of fellow creatures and develop motivation and responsibility through this relationship.”

“The magic of our initiatives is that they are employee selected,” said John Garff, president of Ken Garff Automotive Group. “These events are near and dear to our employee’s hearts.”

Speaking of her late husband, Ken, Kathi Garff said, “He always listened to his employees. He wanted the involvement of employees.

He wanted to provide support in their neighborhoods.”

This action resulted in councilmember Siwik going from the largest district to the smallest district. It also means that district one stays the same.

District two takes part of the area south of 3300 South from district five. District two loses part of the east area north of 300 South to district three.

District three no longer dips past 3300 South between 300 East and 500 East. This area is now part of district four.

District four takes a bite out of district five’s old boundary, working its way west to State Street. In turn, district five takes a bite from district four between 3900 South and Fenton Avenue.

Referendum Update Two referendums were filed with the city in March. Referendum 2022-06 focuses on the raises given to SSL elected officials.

Referendum 2022-05 refers to the stormwater utility fee passed by the city council.

On April 5, the city rejected Referendum 2022-06 based on the belief that the

referendum refers to two city ordinances.

According to state law, a referendum can only be related to one ordinance. Sponsors appealed to the Utah Supreme Court.

“We got word on Monday [May 16] that the Utah Supreme Court is going to be hearing oral arguments in the case, and they are working on scheduling this,” said Timothy Webb, founder of the local political action committee called POET (Promising Oversight, Equity and Transparency).

Due to this pending action, the mayor earmarked $25,000 for a special election in November.

The city also rejected referendum 202205 on May 20 because the ordinance passed on March 23 set the stormwater utility fee,

which was administrative, not legislative.

“The challenged action is administrative in nature because it merely implements ordinance number 2021-17 passed by the South Salt Lake Council on October 27, 2021,” Collins wrote in his rejection letter.

The October 27 ordinance created the stormwater utility fee. The March 23 ordinance determined the rate.

“There were arguments on both sides in precedence, but after discussing it with our council, we decided to focus our efforts on the raise referendum. People should see the tax increase shortly,” Webb said. l

Starting on July 1, 2022, the new pastor at Christ United Methodist Church - SLC will be Rev. Lisa Petty. For five years, Rev. Lisa has been the pastor of Montrose United Methodist Church in Colorado. Prior to that, she served as pastor of Rifle United Methodist Presbyterian Church in Rifle, Colorado. Rev. Lisa graduated from Iliff School of Theology with a Master of Divinity, received her Local Pastor License in January 2012, was commissioned as a Provisional Elder in June 2012, and became an Ordained Elder in June 2014. Her history includes extensive experience in youth and young adult ministries dating back to 1998.

Q: Rev. Lisa, what was the life pathway that led you to become a Methodist minister?

A: I grew up in Southern California with a United Methodist Pastor for a father. I have one older sister, one younger sister, and a younger brother who is an ordained UMC pastor and serves the people of Colorado Springs at St Paul UMC. I am also a fourth-generation Methodist pastor as my grandmother was one of the first women ordained a deacon in the Methodist Episcopal Church. After 10 years of denying my call to the ministry, and finally going back to school to finish an undergraduate degree, I moved to Denver to do my Master of Divinity in two and one-half years.

Cottonwood forensics team heads to nationals after successful season

here was no fan section that exploded when Cottonwood’s forensics team claimed victory at the regional tournament in February.

Nor were there any cheers like when a goal is scored or a basket is made as the team claimed the second-place trophy the next month at state, but through the years, the Colts speech and debate team has built a legacy.

Now that momentum continues as students are preparing for the National Speech and Debate Association that will be held June 12-17 in Louisville, Kentucky.

“It will be a good capstone to our extremely successful year,” Cottonwood forensics adviser Adam Wilkins said. “Our kids are really remarkably talented and what makes it so great is the fact that the majority of kids do all the heavy lifting, which from a personal standpoint for them, is so satisfying. We have a lot of student coaches, and we rely a lot on the kids to coach each other, especially our senior kids helping our underclassmen, and they really pulled it out of the park. That’s what you want for your team so it can sustain a legacy of success. We definitely have a legacy of success—and that’s so awesome. Just to know we have great kids in the wings, ready to jump in, is so incredible. We’re just fortunate to keep attracting these students who want to be good.”

It's a legacy that has lasted for more than five decades.

“Since the school has been built in 1970, speech and debate has always been in the top three for region. It’s pretty remarkable,” Wilkins said.

It starts in the classroom where students will research topics and spend hours practicing it for one another.

“They’ve talked about anything from national and international crises, so prevalent and relevant these days, to some state and local issues. Our orators have amazing topics and there is a great range from the benefits of anger to tribal law and the way Native Americans are portrayed. They’ve discussed rankedchoice voting, local bills, national bills, Supreme Court decisions, COVID, recession, Russian aggression. The great thing about debate is it allows these students to really engage in the world,” he said.

Wilkins not only teaches them skills, but also trust.

“The bottom line is we trust kids and they trust each other.

We trust them to be captains of events. I love the idea that kids can be student captains and then the success of an event is on the shoulders of those captains. We have some amazing event captains this year. That tradition of our success is handed down from our upperclassmen to our underclassmen,” he said.

It's also about attitude.

“I always tell the kids I will never be mad if you don’t win, but I will be mad if you don’t try. That’s a life lesson, you know, to be the best they can and that’s a good thing,” Wilkins said.

While some tournaments have been held in-person, others still remain virtual. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he taught students how to communicate with their eyes since some expressions were hidden under masks and body language was limited.

“The students are taking some of those skills that they naturally developed during the pandemic, and then with their diction and articulation, they’ve become better speakers all the way around,” he said.

That has led to Cottonwood’s team competing well all season.

“We’ve really been dominating all year and have won about half dozen local tournaments,” Wilkins said about his 32-team member mostly speech team. “It’s a quite competitive region and it’s definitely a competitive state, which is nice because you don’t

want to win without any competition because that victory would be a little hollow so it’s nice to win a hard thought victory.”

Wilkins attributes the success of the program to the students themselves.

“They practice for each other and model what they want to do in nationals,” he said. “They want them ready to be able to present and not lose a step and they want to get better, each and every tournament. The first thing they do when they get a ballot back is talk about what can they do to become better, they see what are some successes, and what are the takeaways that they can learn from in this process. It’s another life lesson they’re learning which they can apply after their debate career.”

Wilkins is proud of his team.

“These kids are geniuses; they truly are. There are times when they say things that truly takes my breath away. It’s not just because of their intelligence, but also for their charisma and their intuitiveness,” he said. “What I love about debate is that it allows kids to be smart and it celebrates kids being smart. Several of these young adults—and they’re not children—are being told that their opinions matter, not just their ideas, but their opinions; and that’s what debate can provide you.”

Corporate volunteers spruce up Fitts Park

bout 70 American Express employees descended on Fitts Park on April 29 (Arbor Day). Their mission was to plant trees, spread mulch and pull weeds.

"We are so fortunate to have American Express as a long-standing corporate partner.

They are devoted to Earth Day and always bring an eager and fun team to care for our parks and open space," Sharen Hauri, South Salt Lake director of neighborhoods, said.

Amex community outreach Since 2017, Amex employees have done a community nature project to celebrate Earth Month. For example, they cleaned along the Jordan River in years past.

"We like Fitts Park because it's a family park. So many employees are South Salt Lake residents. This is their park," Lori Bowden, market engagement coordinator at American Express, said. "We also like the park because people always say thank you when we are working."

Charlene Kuhn, an employee volunteer, explained that Amex has two employee committees—the Green Together Committee and the Serve Together Committee.

For this project, the committees came together.

"The environment means a lot to me," Kuhn said. "I often think about what we are doing and how it will affect my grandchildren."

In four hours, the employees were finished and gone, and Fitts Park looked better because of their efforts.

Corporate volunteering "We are blessed to have a number of companies volunteer with us each year, often through United Way Day of Caring, the JustServe website, or the Promise SSL program," Hauri said. "We are grateful for their time and donations, and also for the chance to tell our story as a city and introduce them to what makes our community special. I feel like this has been a critical part of our city image and awareness. Yes, some people still don't know we are a separate city. We are making friends and sharing stories as we dig in the dirt together. It's one of the best parts of my job."

Earth Day Every year, April 22 is Earth Day because it was the day Denis Hayes, a young activist, organized a campus teach-in in 1970. The teach-in is considered the birth of the modern environmental movement.

April 22 was chosen because it is a weekday falling between Spring Break and final exams.

A teach-in is "an informal lecture and discussion or series of lectures on a subject of public interest," according to the Oxford Dictionary. Teach-ins started at the University of Michigan in 1965 to protest against the Vietnam War. After the success of the April 22 non-violent protest, Hayes built a national staff and named the day Earth Day. The first Earth

Arbor Day's roots started in Nebraska City, Nebraska. A newspaper editor, J. Sterling Morton, loved trees and advocated for individ-

uals and civic organizations to plant them. On Jan. 4, 1872, Morton proposed a tree-planting holiday called "Arbor Day." It was set for April 10, 1872. Prizes were given to counties and individuals who planted the most trees. It is estimated that over one million trees were planted in Nebraska on the first Arbor Day. The idea spread so that by 1920 most states and territories had passed legislation to observe Arbor Day. The tree-planting tradition became a common activity for school children across the nation. Children were given small trees to plant in their yards.

Funding our City’s Future Each year, I present a tentative budget to the City Council for adoption. This collaborative process brings the needs and priorities of our community to the forefront.

We are all personally experiencing increasing costs for goods and services, and municipal government is no different. Let’s talk about how we fund our City.

South Salt Lake is a small city, with big Mayor Cherie Wood city issues and is at a critical juncture for providing basic, essential services. We have seen significant growth over the past 10 years. Census data shows a 13% increase in our population, with a notable jump in the near future as needed housing projects in our downtown and near transit lines go vertical. Our population nearly triples in the daytime as a central transportation hub and commerce district. In our 84th year as a City, our infrastructure continues to age and deteriorate. Rising costs are outpacing our utility fees. As it stands, there simply isn’t enough in the budget to maintain the current level of service.

Our aging City has significant budget needs.

So, how do we address them? This year’s proposed budget suggests an increase from $66 million to $86 million. This expanded budget includes more police officers, from 70 to 76, and four additional fire personnel to keep up with the ever-rising public safety demand while reducing the response time to priority calls. Additionally, we propose funding for the expansion and essential rebuilding of our Public Works Campus. The budget also addresses the reconstruction of 700 West, parks lighting upgrades, State Street streetscape improvements, and a new well essential for meeting our future water needs.

How will we pay for it?

I am pleased to say that the bulk of the $20 million increase will be funded through established revenue sources. Department heads and city staff have been working hard to secure private and public grant funds and low or no interest bonds and loans. Sales and highway tax revenue make up the remaining portion.

Public Safety Service Special Revenue Fund To fund our City’s future, $6.6 million in new revenue must be generated. The budget proposal includes a new fund, the

Public Safety Service (PSS) Special Revenue Fund. This fund will capture and track all public safety services, increasing transparency for our single largest city service. Just as it sounds, these funds are allocated specifically for public safety and cannot be spent elsewhere. Public safety expenditures have consistently risen for the past six years. The majority of the cost is expended on personnel. At present, 15% of our public safety budget is funded through grant dollars. We have sought outside funding whenever possible. As our City grows, so do our public safety needs. Adopting the PSS enacts a levy that will annually generate $3.5 million. These funds mean an increased

presence, shortened response times, and proactive policing.

These proposed funds will be allocated to retain qualified staff, recruit and meet the public safety needs of our busy City. The PSS would be a new line item on your property tax bill, similar to what many cities in the valley have enacted.

Utility Fee Increases The remaining $3.1 million is comprised of new and increased utility fees. For the first time in our City’s history, we are investing in a storm water utility. Lastly, an incremental increase in sewer utility fees to fund the CVWRF upgrades required by the EPA and an increase in water utility fees to fund a new well.

The average household total expected increase is $27 a month. This will mean a new line item on your property tax bill of $19 for the PSS, $1 water rate increase, $1 sewer rate increase, and a $6 storm water utility fee.

South Salt Lake has not increased its portion of property tax since 2006. We cannot maintain the current level of service, meet the rising demand, and fund the future of public safety on yesterday’s dollars. Together we can support our public safety and fund essential infrastructure needs for the future. For those who may be disproportionately burdened by proposed increases, my staff has identified county and city waivers and relief options in addition to utility assistance programs for those who meet income and hardship guidelines.

The Fiscal Year 2023 Budget Public Hearing will be held on Wednesday, June 8 at 7:30 p.m. All are encouraged to attend, comment, and make inquiries. The 2020 Census reports the population of South Salt Lake at 26,777.

Your life’s experiences continue to lead you to moments that you can help others. Your ability to help is not limited to just being politically active, although that helps for certain issues.

All of us interact with people every day. You will know how to make a difference. But you have to act on the ideas you get.

Our community needs your ideas, your voice and your passion.

It needs your desire to help others.

Utah is on the path for another hot, dry summer that will bring an increased threat of grass and wildland fires. The South Salt Lake Fire Department has just completed their preparation for Wildland Firefighting Operations in urban areas.

The wildland-urban interface (WUI) is a zone of transition between wilderness (unoccupied land) and land developed by human activity – in other words, an area where a built environment (neighborhoods and commercial buildings) meets or intermingles with a natural environment. Areas, where people work and live in the WUI, are at a greater risk of catastrophic wildfire.

It’s difficult to imagine that we would need to prepare for a wildland fire situation in our city, but these challenges are real, and we face them every year. Within our city boundaries, we have the Jordan River corridor, areas along the rail lines, highways and many

open lots adjacent to businesses and homes. As the vegetation growth dries, the fire threat increases. Historically, we have been successful in containing these fires in our jurisdiction.

In addition to providing fire protection in our own jurisdiction, we may be called to assist our surrounding agencies. We may even be asked to provide resources to the Utah State Division of Forestry, Fire and State Lands. In the past, we have responded to many of these areas when called upon.

According to established agreements, the State becomes the lead agency for attacking large and extended wildland fires, and local governments agree to take proactive measures to prevent and attack wildfires within their respective jurisdictions.

With these agreements and plans in place, all lands in Utah receive wildland fire protections from the closest forces, regardless of agency jurisdiction, with a seamless response, South Salt Lake Fire is making sure we’re ready to do our part!

EQUITY CHAMPION —Bonnie Owens

History was made in South Salt Lake in November of 2019 as Councilwoman Pinkney was elected as the first Black council member. As an At-Large representative, she can be found working hard on behalf of the residents and businesses of our City. Natalie is an active member of the Equity Council and Arts Council and currently serves as the City Council’s vice-chair. She takes a thoughtful, collaborative approach to policy and was involved in forming legislation for our first Civilian Review Board.

Bonnie initially made her mark in SSL as an employee of Promise. She built and sustained a thriving afterschool program at Woodrow Wilson Elementary before accepting the role of Deputy Director of Promise SSL. Soon after, she took on the additional role of leading the Promise SSL Equity Council. As chair, Bonnie has worked tirelessly to bring diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility to the City of South Salt Lake. We are grateful for Bonnie’s active role and influence on diversity, equity, and inclusion in our city.

COMMUNITY CHAMPIONS —SSL Homeless Resource Officers (HROs)

It is no surprise that the ‘City on the Move’ is now home to Utah’s first FitLot. This new outdoor exercise station adds to the recently opened Bickley Park at 2508 South 500 East. The outdoor fitness station was generously donated by AARP and designed by FitLot. The funding award includes three years of programming to ensure free fitness classes at the new FitLot. The equipment is designed for seniors but accessible to all. Thank you to Alan Ormsby and AARP-Utah!

BEST PUBLIC ART —Krysta Dimik Resident & Architect Finding herself on a committee tasked with designing and building the Days of ‘47 South Salt Lake Stake Float, Krysta sought to find a way to use resources more sustainably. Floats are expensive to build, only to be thrown away after a parade.

She and her team designed an art piece, the elements of which represent different aspects of life, diversity, and culture here in SSL. Krysta worked with Promise SSL and welcomed youth helpers on the project. You can see Krysta’s Best Public Art on display at the Historic Scott School campus.

Cody Coggle, Chad Leetham, Jason Rasmussen, James Gray, Alex Plascencia, Daniel Zajonc & Quinton Addison Our public safety has long been known as exemplary, so it was no surprise that our HRO Team was identified as the best at what they do. In a May 2021 report from the Office of the Legislative Auditor General, the SSL HROs were called out as a best practice. This group embodies Community Policing at its best, serving homeless individuals by utilizing a personable approach. Our HRO team engages the homeless community with consistent, frequent, and, whenever possible, positive interactions. These seven individuals have perhaps the most challenging work in our city, yet they shine as the model in our state and continue to pave the way for solutions.

BEST LOCAL ART ADVOCATE —Josh Scheuerman Josh is a native Utahn known throughout the valley for his graphic design, photography, and painting skills. He is the go-to guy in the mural community, always willing to lend a hand, equipment, and expertise.

Josh cares deeply about making the world a better place; he is known for using his artistic talents to promote community and environmental activism in his native Salt Lake City and abroad. His work in SSL includes Godzilla Gnomes on Sugarpost and Arches National Park on Signed & Numbered.

In its 5th year, The Artist Meet and Greet on May 14th was not only well attended (approx. 4,000!), the weather, entertainment, food trucks, and the entire scene were nothing short of magical. arm June temperatures bring with them the option to dine outside. Many establishments with beautiful outdoor seating are for special occasions, like La Caille in Sandy, The Charleston Draper and Tuscany in Holladay.

But a number of other locally-owned restaurants around the valley offer charming patio spaces for dining on a budget.

Here are five al fresco dining spots that are easy on the wallet.

Creative problem solving, collaboration made emergency management exercises a success

alt Lake County Emergency Management (SLCo EM) directed a Joint Information Center (JIC) functional exercise on May 12. The exercise brought together 23 Public Information Officers (PIO) from various agencies across Salt Lake Valley.

The players came from Herriman City, Midvale City, Murray City, Taylorsville City, Bluffdale City, Holladay City, Millcreek City and West Jordan City. From Salt Lake County, the players came from several Salt Lake County departments, including Arts and Culture, Health, Mayor’s office, Public Works Operations, Aging and Adult Services, District Attorney’s office, Sheriff, Parks and Recreation and Regional Development. Salt Lake City Fire Department also played. From the private sector, Rocky Mountain Power played.

Twenty-five exercise helpers assisted with the exercise. From the state, there were employees from the Division of Emergency Management, Department of Health and Human Services, Utah Transit Authority and Department of Environmental Quality. In addition, numerous members of the Salt Lake County Emergency management participated. From the private sector, representatives from Fox 13 News, KUTV 2 News, and the City Journals participated in the news conference part of the exercise.

“As part of the exercise, the PIOs will have to conduct a press conference with actual representatives such as fire chiefs, police chiefs, etc.,” Tina Brown, PIO SLCo EM, said. “The exercise is designed to mimic a real-life scenario the PIOs will have to work through, including answering media calls and releasing public information. I thought this could be a great opportunity for a story since many of the participants signed up are the PIOs for many of the local municipalities and agencies in Salt Lake County.”

Exercise Chet Ellis, SLCo Deputy Emergency Manager/Operations Section chief, lead the effort from design to execution to Mop Up. Ellis is completing the Master Exercise Practitioner Program from Federal Emergency Management Administration (FEMA). After two years of onsite and online training, this exercise was his capstone project.

Ellis and Brown were the exercise controls.

“The main reason we do these exercises is to test the system,” Ellis told the group.

Scenario The exercise scenario centered around an active shooter and an explosion at the theaters in The District. The exercise was played in real-time plus 12 hours. In other words, while the exercise started at 9 a.m., the scenario began at 9 p.m.

Before the exercise began, the timeline was that a 911 call was received at 8:30 p.m. of shots fired at the theaters. At 8:35, SLCo

EM started to monitor the situation. An explosion is reported at 8:38. At 8:40, SLCo EM staff and support staff received an AlertSense message. The message told them to report to the SLCo EM Center. This is the same way in real life. AlertSense messages are used to ramp up the SLCo EM Center.

At 8:45, social media erupted with messages asking for facts and voicing concerns for loved ones. Local TV started live coverage at 8:48. By 8:55, the Emergency Support Function (ESF) had arrived and received their initial briefing.

Clint Mecham, SLCo director of emergency management, told the group about the 2020 Magna earthquake. In the Operations Center, there was 185 ESF staff working on issues like evacuating Magna because of a HazMat leak at Kennecott.

Play At 9, the exercise started.

All PIOs choose an Incident Commander/Lead PIO. They selected West Jordan Officer Sam Winkler. He quickly organized the others into groups according to their expertise and experience.

A call center was staffed to take calls.

Social media was monitored to knock down rumors and supply valid information. The media was managed as they sought information in many ways.

An area called the “SimCell” was a separate room. In the SimCell, volunteers made phone calls to the call center seeking information about loved ones at the theater.

Others made media calls. In addition, SimCell would provide scenario information or throw the JIC a curveball.

“One issue we found is our call center numbers don’t roll,” Ellis said. “We need to get this fixed.”

Instead of calling one published number and rolling to a free person, SimCell people had to try a variety of numbers to get through.

“The exercise is going really well,” Brown said. “Some tech issues, but this is why we test.”

The scenario ended with a press conference at midnight. Again, members of the JIC had to prepare talking points and brief press conference presenters.

“They did a great job. They prepped the speakers,” Chief Justin Hoyal, Unified Police Department, said during the Mop Up session. “They wanted to make sure we are all on the same page.”

Mop Up A Mop Up was held after the exercise.

Exercise observers and key players provided feedback.

“Everyone took their roles seriously, and they stayed within their role,” Officer Winkler said. “They all worked together.”

“The players are coming up with creative solutions. It is always good when there is creativity is an exercise,” Ellis said. l

Recovery Dharma—a potential to heal the suffering of addiction

eyond the doors of South Salt Lake’s Utah Support Advocates for Recovery Awareness (USARA) room, lies a devout group of open-minded and learning participants of Recovery Dharma, a program dedicated to helping those struggling from addiction troubles by incorporating Buddhist practices and teachings.

“Finding peace and comfort without the use of substance, to have a meaningful life without substance and to be able to learn how to help others who have similar struggles is the main achievement,” said Alex Hernandez, a Salt Lake City local who is new to the program.

After everyone takes their seat around a circular succession of tables, Sally Boland, the facilitator, opens up a copy of the book “Recovery Dharma” and begins the reading: “Welcome to this meeting of Recovery Dharma. We are gathered to explore a Buddhist-inspired approach to recovery from addiction of all kinds.” Soon, others take turns in reading the template before the meeting shifts into a period of meditation.

The room gets quiet, everyone closes their eyes, and practices letting go of the weight of experience, of years of struggle, addiction and behavioral battles. Deep exhales can be heard, taut shoulders become

After 15 minutes, a meditation bell rings, signifying the end of the practice and the beginning of another. The reading resumes.

Recovery Dharma has had a positive impact on many lives. Ray Rosales, a local musician and one of the founders of the program, said, “In the beginning it was just about making sobriety. Now with Buddhism, it helps to improve all aspects of life, with others, relationships with yourself—equanimity, grace under pressure, and now the benefits are very apparent and continue to be.”

Investing time and effort to pave a smoother path to addiction recovery is one of the main objectives for the peer-led movement.

“Recovery Dharma gives me a better understanding of myself, who I am, as well as a greater sense of inner peace,” said Trevor Smith, who is about to graduate with a master’s degree. “The last three years of my life wouldn’t be possible without my sobriety, and I will definitely be coming back to Recovery Dharma—this will become a regular activity.”

“There is a strong sense of communi-

ty here, like-minded people all supporting long-term sobriety from all kinds of addictions. Practicing mindfulness is a great way to come back to ground zero, to understand what is happening. It’s a reality check; it keeps you honest,” said Kristen Ohlsson, who lives in St. George and travels to South Salt Lake to attend the meetings.

“We have grown considerably,” said Rosales. “The meetings started in a small room at the University of Utah, and now we’ve changed locations, have more people coming in for recovery and being closer to public transportation really helps too.

Of course, USARA has been real generous with working with us and making all of this happen.”

USARA has been the leading nonprofit recovery community organization for Utah since its founding in 2006. Recovery Dharma helps with all forms of addiction, not just substance abuse but process addictions as well, like gambling, sex, eating disorders, spending habits, cell phone use or anything habitual or obsessive through meditation, wisdom and compassion. In-person meetings are held every Sunday and Wednesday; online meetings are available every Friday.

Cottonwood boys soccer surprised many with storybook season

S

tarting the 5A state tournament as the No. 22 seed could have easily eroded the confidence of the Cottonwood boys soccer team. But to the Colts’ credit they never let what some believed was a low seeding affect what they did on the field.

The 2022 season came to an unfortunate end at Skyline in the second round for this No. 22 seed on May 17. But, the goals this Colts team achieved this year came with so many firsts it would be hard to call one 4-0 loss at perennial 5A power Skyline a failure, according to new Cottonwood head coach BryLee Harvest.

“Our season came to an end today, but what a remarkable and historic season that was for our boys and program,” said Harvest, the first-year head coach who watched his Colts do what few believed was even possible and also do something that hasn’t been accomplished at Cottonwood since 2008.

These Colts were no pushover at state.

That much was apparent after a two-overtime non-league game that Harvest set up against 5A power Jordan one week before the state tournament showed the Colts’ determination. It was arranged to get Cottonwood (10-10, 8-4 Region 7) ready for the state tournament grind. The Colts lost that one 2-1 in double overtime at Jordan in an all-out war on May 6, but it prepared them for what was to come.

No. 27 Timpview, Cottonwood had some nerves going into this all-to-play-for decider for a state tournament berth early in the match.

“I cannot even recall how long it's been since we had the luxury of playing at home in the playoffs,” Harvest said. “But, the boys were clearly jittery playing in front of our community and playing very sloppy.”

Timpview struck first blood, and years of futility seemed to be catching up to Cottonwood, said the first-year head coach.

“We just had no answers to their aggressive approach to the game,” recalled Harvest. “We recollected ourselves at halftime and had a couple chances here and there, but still could not break through their defense [that had bunkered in and was holding on for the win].”

According to Harvest, the Colts were playing with only three defenders in the back to try and get an equalizer. Then, with three minutes to play, a cross into Timpview’s 18-yard box led to a scramble.

Senior Isma Byangoy pounced on the loose ball and tapped it into the net past the flailing Timpview goalkeeper. What happened next, well, that’s why stories are written and told.

“It was just absolute mayhem when that ball hit the back of the net. The fans were screaming and the team received a huge boost of momentum in the game,” Harvest said.

Cottonwood boys track qualifies out of Region 7 for state

oys track For the Cottonwood High School boys track team it’s been a long time since the Colts have qualified so many athletes for the state championships.

But as a new member of Region 7, it seems that Cottonwood has been given a new lease on life on the track and has been handed those gold-plated horseshoes with which it can aspire for a state title.

To do just that, the Colts hopped in the big yellow school bus and took the three-hour drive to Uintah High School in Vernal, host of this year’s Region 7 Championships.

There they finished fourth as a team, which in turn qualifies them for the 5A state championships to be held May 19-21 at BYU after press time.

Individually, the Colts also had some nice performances in Vernal. Senior Calvin Frodsham finished third in the 110 meter hurdles with a time of 16.12 seconds, which also was a personal record for him.

Frodsham followed that great performance up with another one in the 300 meter hurdles, finishing in 41.72 seconds — good enough for third place.

Another great performance came from Cottonwood senior Tailsua Davidson, who took second in discus, throwing the stone a whopping 124-00 feet.

Both Frodsham and Davidson qualified for the 5A state championships based on their finishes.

One other nice story in boys track came from three Cottonwood football players who also participate on the Colts track team. The first, senior Luke Davis, finished third in the javelin with a throw of 145-09 feet, a personal record. Davis Heading into overtime, one of Harvest’s assistant coaches approached him about keeping three defenders in the back and going for the early game winner, but ultimately left the decision up to him.

“I turned to the team [on the sideline] and said, ‘What do you guys want to do?’

Harvest recounted. “They said, ‘Coach, let's keep the extra attacker and go for the early goal in overtime.’”

It was in that overtime period the Colts would immediately assert their dominance, scoring a crazy goal in the first two minutes for a 2-1 win. “[Junior] Diego Lopez whipped in a cross from near half-field and the ball landed in the feet of Riyan Bakrim who had to battle to get past their defenders. Bakrim shot the ball, deflecting off Timpview's defender straight up in the air and he proceeded to land hard on the ground,” Harvest said.

“Timpview's keeper was slightly high off his [goal] line and the ball just had this tremendous backspin and fell very oddly crossing over the goal line. [Junior] Riyan Bakrim actually had no idea that he had scored as he fell with his back away from the goal, he claimed he just saw everyone rushing the field towards him,” added the first-year head coach.

So the Colts took the short ride across Interstate 215 to Hillcrest and for the third time this season, the Colts dispatched their crosstown rival in relatively easy fashion in a 2-1 victory.

Another short bus trip up the road to Skyline, who was Cottonwood’s rival in the old Region 6 for several years resulted in a tough ending to the season in the round of 16. But, in the new head coach’s eyes it was a storybook season regardless.

“It was a great underdog story that sets the standard for future Cottonwood soccer players,” said the first-year Cottonwood head coach. “It may be a little while for our players to recover from the realization that our season is officially over, but when they do, I want them to know that they have made their community proud and have restored pride back to Cottonwood soccer.”

This state tournament run that was kickstarted by a five-game unbeaten streak in Region 7 also proved these Colts could well be thoroughbreds by the time 2023 comes around.

“Having only lost five seniors this season, we will be back next year with a roster loaded on experience,” Harvest said. “We had over 16 juniors on this team and retain practically our entire starting lineup heading into the new season. This is only the beginning for these great group of boys.” l

A party for all at Tailgate Tavern

social gathering occurred on Sunday, May 15, at the Tailgate Tavern at 3550 S. State St. The event, hosted by Ashley McCrory, a New York City native now living in Salt Lake, grew in popularity through social media sites and gathered a diverse crowd from Salt Lake City locals to out-of-state visitors.

“The point is to create a party where people from all walks of life can fuse together, bring something new to the table, eat, drink unlimited mimosas, but it ends early—seven o’clock—so we can all get to bed early so we can all wake up for work in the morning,” said McCrory as she gazed out to the crowd attending her event.

Inside Tailgate Tavern, a banner reading “Brunch & Bubbly” could be found on the back wall, balloons were interspersed throughout the room, and the fog machine in the corner produced a hazy atmosphere over the lighting from lamps and television screens. Laughter and festive voices projected celebratory comfort in a crowded bar where revelers enjoyed their evening among lively music and good vibes.

Near the pool tables, food was placed and offered to anyone in attendance along with all-you-can-drink mimosas.

McCrory made her way to the front, and the DJ stopped the music.

“Time for a toast,” she said, holding up her glass, addressing everybody in the room.

“Thank you to everyone for coming here tonight. You all look so beautiful, so lovely!

This is my first real event and this has given me an opportunity to make my vision come true—to all get together, come together and to let Utah know that we bring a little soul here!

“Everyone, let’s have a good time!”

The DJ resumed the music and people went back to their conversations, food and drink. More guests entered, and more began to dance; glasses could be heard clattering through the music, the cheers and the jubilation.

In comparison to other social gatherings, Bubbly Beards & Baddies emphasizes authenticity of self, making it a haven for people of all backgrounds to interact with one another and to forget the daily stressors of life, even for just a few hours.

“I’m just here to party, socialize with friends and have a good time,” said Samantha, a Salt Lake City local.

New region, same old result for Cottonwood baseball as it lifts another region crown

S

ometimes, time takes time.

Ringo Starr wrote that song back in 1992. If you don’t know who that person is, you are probably younger than the age of 25.

Speaking of kids under 25, the Cottonwood baseball team is in a new region, one that requires a lot of traveling.

There’s a three-hour bus trip to get to one school and several one-hour bus rides for every other school except crosstown rival Hillcrest.

So the Colts did not get off to a hot start in their new region, losing two of their first three games.

Down the stretch however, the Colts got back on that saddle and won eight straight league games to claim the Region 7 title, its first in the new alignment and the first as well since that magical state title run of 2019.

Cottonwood (17-7, 8-3 Region 7) finished one game ahead of Uintah in the Region 7 standings.

In that eight game unbeaten run to claim their region title, the Colts scored at least seven runs and absolutely walloped their crosstown rival Hillcrest 2712 in a game that was called after five innings.

That impressive run by the Colts earned them the No. 5 seed at the upcoming 5A state tournament which will begin after press time.

It took a bit of time for this Cottonwood team to find the right horseshoes, but once the Colts did it was a nice, steady trot for the 2019 state champions who trampled their region opponents as they neared the finish line in 2022.

They were so dominant after a sting-

ing 3-1 loss at home to Stansbury April 26 that the closest margin of victory for any of their Region 7 opponents after that game was five runs.

Several players came up big for Cottonwood including Keaton Stinson, the heavy-hitting sophomore who picked up right where he left off last month, not only matching but surpassing the three home runs he hit last month with a whopping four dingers in the final two weeks of the regular season.

That gives Stinson a total of seven homers on the season going into the state tourney, the best home run total on the team. Junior Cameron Neilson finished the regular season as the top RBI getter with 29 for Cottonwood, and contributed three home runs including two in one game in that 27-12 romp at Hillcrest.

Also, the run production that Cottonwood baseball has been known for over the years was still there as well.

The Colts hit 54 doubles this year, led by Neilson’s eight. Stinson and senior Tavish Snow also had seven. Snow is only one of five seniors on this Cottonwood team. Another senior Parker Burk led Cottonwood with two triples along with Neilson, who stuffed every stat sheet in existence for the Colts.

Sophomore Hayden Hudman led Cottonwood with a 5-1 record on the mound, taking his only L against Stansbury on April 26. Aside from that one tough outing in which Stansbury beat the Colts at their own game in a narrow 3-1 defeat Hudman wasn’t just letter perfect; in the other three region contests he only allowed a grand total of 12 hits.

With a young team, Cottonwood girls golf takes big strides in a new region

eading into the 2022 season, Cottonwood girls golf head coach Gregg Southwick said he knew his team was still a bit on the younger side.

“I know we should be a lot better,” he said back in August 2021. “I just don’t know how good we will be.”

The Colts coach who is also the school’s athletic director added that with the travel that his team must do, he wasn’t entirely sure what to expect going into a new region like Region 7.

Southwick’s Colts squad had finished in fifth place in their final year in the old Region 6, but there was an inkling that Cottonwood would fare even better in the new region.

It turned out that Southwick’s hunch was correct. Out

of the six competing schools in girls golf in Region 7, Cottonwood finished in third place this year with a team scoring average of 434.9.

What’s more is that the Colts had a new star who was ready to tee off.

Sophomore Hailey Crowell finished 12th among all Region 7 golfers with a 105.3 18-hole stroke average this year. It was the first time in several years that a Cottonwood girls golfer finished in the top 15 in any individual final standings.

One week after qualifying out of Region 7, Crowell moved on to the 5A state tournament at the River Oaks Golf Course in Sandy. The sophomore started with two double bogeys on her first two holes, but nearly hit for par

on hole 3 before hitting another double bogey.

Crowell also double-bogeyed the fourth hole, but played well on hole 5 and scored a bogey to highlight her day—her first ever at the state tournament. She finished well off the cut line for the final round with a plus-57 over the 18 holes at River Oaks.

It seemed like the par-3 holes on the winding, scenic and sweeping course were the best ones for Crowell, who never hit more than five strokes on each of River Oaks’ five par-3s.

For her efforts, the Cottonwood sophomore Crowell also found her name on the Par-3 leaderboard at the 5A state tournament, tied for 31st. l

ardware Creative Collective and Comcast partnered to host the inaugural Comcast RISE Black Excellence Event in Salt Lake City on Apr. 20. The celebration honored Utah Black Creatives in a range of industries from the arts, business, education and film to mental health, armed forces, tech and venture capital.

Honorees were selected based on their ability to showcase their creativity through inspiration, intersection and innovation.

“It was truly amazing to see something that started as a vision and brainstorming with folks around a kitchen table turn into an extraordinary celebration of Utah’s Black creatives,” said Deneiva Knight, External Affairs Director, Comcast Mountain West Region. “For me, Hardware Collective is a platform for Black creatives to acknowledge and celebrate themselves and their peers versus waiting and hoping to receive accolades from outsiders. The love and appreciation in the room that night were unmatchable.”

A one-horse race

W

hen I was in eighth grade, I was elected to the class senate. In ninth grade, I was elected as a cheerleader. Did I deserve these titles?

Probably not. But I’d bribed fellow students with copious amounts of candy because that’s the American way.

After a series of decidedly terrible life choices, my scholastic career drove off the rails and I never ran for election again. When I turned 18, I registered to vote and I’ve cast a vote in every election since. I also respond to Twitter polls, fill out Amazon reviews and take surveys at the bottom of yard-long Kohl’s receipts.

Now that I’m a semi-functioning adult, it’s up to me to choose the right people to lead us into the future. Since the future is nuclear bomb-shaped, we won’t need leaders much longer, but elections are important, at least until that mushroom cloud rises over the mountains.

Here’s why voting is funny. You’ll get a kick out of this. When I vote for new leadership or more progressive ideas, the person/issue I’m voting for rarely wins. Why? Because I live in conservative Utah.

Sure, I can protest, but not too loud, right? I wouldn’t want to sound shrill. I reach out to my U.S. senators and representatives and get a form letter in response. The vast majority of my state leaders are conservative white men, afraid of losing control.

I admire the elected women in Utah, fighting in the trenches for wom-

en’s rights, access to health care, gun control and education. That’s a difference I see between male and female roles: men want power, women want to lead.

After being mansplained to since birth, I understand my female brain can’t comprehend the problems involved with running the state. Like, how can our leaders make money if we don’t let them relocate a prison across the valley so they can develop prime property? How can the state generate revenue on alcohol without ridiculous licensing fees and policies? How can we possibly treat educators, minorities, or uteruses with respect, without creating laws to rein them in?

And then they have the gall to say, vote in the leaders you want. How? Tell me how and I’ll do it! Phew. I must be off my anti-hysterical meds.

If I learned anything from running for office in junior high, it’s that voters will follow the candy. But as a female voter in Utah, I’m tired of the sugary-sweet, syrupy condescension.
