CREATIVITY HAS A NEW PLACE TO DEVELOP IN SOUTH SALT LAKE

A

nother jewel was added to the South Salt Lake Promise after-school offerings when the SSL Promise Best Buy Teen Tech Center located at the Columbus Center (2531 S. 400 East) held their grand opening on Oct. 1.

The Teen Tech Center provides a place for 13- to 18 year olds to play with technology. In the center are three Apple computers and 14 Windows-based computers loaded with a variety of creative apps.

The room has a green screen which allows teens to take their picture and using a PC put themselves in another photo.

Ephraim, a student at Granite Park Junior High School, enjoyed the setup. After taking a picture of him holding something, Ephraim placed himself in front of The White House alongside former President John F. Kennedy. In the final picture, Ephraim is holding the vintage “I want you” Uncle Sam poster — all created within the center in a matter of minutes.

When asked why President Kennedy, Ephraim responded, “JFK is my favorite president.”

Ian, another GPJHS student, was the first student to use the Teen Tech Center on opening day in September. During the grand opening, Ian was wearing goggles and enjoying virtual reality.

“I thought it would be an interesting place,” Ian said on the opening day.

The Teen Tech Center also has a recording and editing studio, 3D printers and a button press. This allows students to design a button on a computer, print it out and wear them.

ing everyday objects like fruit or Silly Putty to a computer, the objects become a touch pad for computer input. This allows users to be creative and in the words of the maker, “develop a Maker mindset.” This allows users to see the world in a different way.

The Teen Tech Center is open Tuesday through Friday

from 3-7 p.m. and on Saturday 10 a.m.-2 p.m.

The Promise SSL Best Buy Teen Tech center was made possible with a $110,000 grant from Best Buy. This center is number 31 across the nation sponsored by Best Buy in partnership with Clubhouse Network. The partnership dates to 2013 and plans to have more than 60 centers by 2020.

The arts abound at Pioneer Craft House

he Pioneer Craft House held an open house on Oct. 7 to showcase their many offerings and improved facilities. They have been a South Salt Lake fixture for over 60 years.

History

The Pioneer Craft House was created in 1947 by Glenna Beeley to honor the crafts of the Utah Pioneers. The name was used to mark the centennial of the settlement of Salt Lake City. The Pioneer Craft House was originally housed in the old Auerbach’s department store on the corner of Broadway (300 South) and State Street. They moved to their current location (3271 S. 500 East) in the 1950s. They are co-located with a Promise SSL after-school program at Historic Scott School.

According to their website, “Our mission is to honor our rich history in the community as an art education center by continuing to offer affordable art classes, workshops, and events within Salt Lake County and greater Utah areas. Our goal is to foster lifelong participation in and appreciation of the arts.

Pioneer Craft House is dedicated to inspiring imagination, exploration transformation, ​and joy through art and crafts education.”

Salt Lake County used $764,000 of the Zoo, Arts and Parks (ZAP) taxpayer bond funds to buy the property from Granite School District and began restoration in 2008. The District transferred the property jointly to the county and the city of South Salt Lake.

In 2007, an interlocal agreement between the county and SSL directs that when the bonds are paid off, the county will transfer ownership to the city. Even though the bonds are paid, a transfer has yet to happen.

Offerings

With the help of skilled volunteer instructors, the Pioneer Craft House teaches

classes in jewelry, music, pottery, stained glass, weaving and fiber arts, and woodworking. In many cases, within these broad categories are specialized arts.

Within the jewelry cottage, classes currently being taught are beading basics, lost wax casting, basic wire wrapping and pattern wire wrapping.

Lost wax casting is an ancient method of making jewelry from a wax mold. It is called lost wax casting because when the mold is made, the wax is melted away leaving an opening for the casting. Students create the wax design, make the metal mold, pour the metal, and polish the jewelry.

Wire wrapping is wrapping wire around a stone, minerals or gemstones to create items such as necklaces and earrings. After mastering the basics of the art, students can use advanced techniques to make intricate works. Classes run between $100-$120 with $20 for supplies. Every Saturday, there is an open jewelry lab from 1-5 p.m. for students to finish projects.

Under jewelry is also lapidary and silversmithing. Lapidary is the art of cutting, grinding, and polishing stone, minerals, or gemstones into decorative items. Silversmithing is making objects from silver using the same techniques as a blacksmith, but on a much smaller scale and with smaller tools.

Music classes focus on playing Native American flutes, which are often made by students. Currently, the only woodworking instructor is skilled in making these flutes from a variety of woods and styles.

The Pioneer Craft House recently expanded the pottery studio.

“We have about 150 students in 10 classes. We have students that come from Delta, Utah and Wyoming,” Pete Bringhurst, pottery director, said.

Classes teach using the slab method and

using the pottery wheel.

“This is a nice distraction from my busy work week. It teaches me patience,” Jing, an SSL resident, said.

Another user of the wheel, Edric Woo of Salt Lake City, when asked what he was making responded, “I just follow my fingers.

Planning is too stressful.”

There are multiple classes costing $160 with $25-$35 for supplies. The classes last 10 weeks. Open labs are held throughout the week.

Weaving and fiber arts include basket weaving, crochet, knitting, hand-painted silk, spinning and weaving.

During the open house many types of weaving were demonstrated. One person was making a rug and another was using a technique called “overshot,” which has become a true American art form. It consists of weaving a pattern of geometric designs. The design is formed as the weaver raises and lowers shafts containing thread. In this case, he was working with 3,000 threads and it took about two weeks to set up.

The Pioneer Craft House also holds special classes. At the open house, a guest from Denver was conducting a scratchboard art class. This art form is considered by many artists to be one of the most difficult and most time-consuming of all mediums.

The artist starts with a Masonite panel that is coated with smooth white clay. The clay layer is coated with a thin layer of black India ink. This gives the artist a solid black panel to start with. After tracing a design, typically an animal, the artist uses a variety of tools to scratch away the India ink and re-expose the white clay. The final picture can stay black and white or color can be added.

Sparks fly again at SSL City Council meeting over code revision

nother rock was added to the rocky relationship between the South Salt Lake City Council and the city’s staff on Oct. 9.

The meeting got heated when Alex White, division manager for community development and Councilmember Shane Siwik exchanged words.

The issue at hand was a recommendation to the council to update the zoning map, amend Chapter 3.11 and 9.24 and repeal and replace Titles 5, 15, and 17 of the city code.

After much discussion, White’s frustration spilled out.

“We have had four work meetings and not one of you have brought anything forward to talk about. That is very frustrating when you give staff no direction, you have no input, you refuse to meet in small group meetings, and then you listen to developers and you don’t listen to the staff working for you. That is extremely inappropriate,” White said.

At which point, Siwik shot back, “Alex, don’t tell this council what is appropriate and what is not. That is our job.”

White jumped in saying, “I am not done.

This ordinance is holding up projects. I have 25 applications backlogged that we cannot process because of conflicts in the code. This ordinance does not fix our policy issues.”

Siwik and White continued to spar until Siwik said, “We respond to the community.

In the earlier meeting, the community wasn’t there, but they are here now. We have an obligation to go down a deeper dive.”

At this point, other council members stepped in trying find the next step forward.

The step they found was to move it to the Nov. 13 work and regular meeting.

“It is frustrating when my staff isn’t heard and the council doesn’t explain the why,” Mayor Cherie Wood said.

Background

During the most recent budget discussion, Community Development requested funds to hire outside help to “remove errant and conflicting provisions, reorganize regulations, codify engineering standards, codify standard road profiles, coordinate local land use regulations with recent amendments to the state alcohol laws, consolidate the land use matrices, codify plain language and conform with recent mandates in State law.”

(Stated in the City Council agenda.)

The funds were cut. Since the need for a cleanup was causing issues in quickly processing development applications, city staff decided to tackle at least the first phase. A small group from Community Development and the city attorney’s office came together and “blew up the code” and put it back together.

The result was a 440-page document of the revised code. The document was presented to the Planning Commission on Aug. 1.

Rather than having the commission read each

page, White provided a multi-page overview.

With little discussion, the commission passed the recommendation to the city council.

The recommendation was first presented to the council on Aug. 14 with the same overview presentation. However, the council was concerned about the details. They decided to move the business forward to allow time to read the document.

The business continued to be moved forward. In a Sept. 18 work meeting, Mark Kindred, councilmember at-large, stated his concern, “This is a major code change.”

Siwik from District 5 wanted to see the changes presented in the typical manner by red lining the changes. Staff explained that the reorganization was so massive, the entire 440-page document would be red lined.

In the council meeting following, three developers from the same company spoke in opposition to the code changes.

“Passing this ordinance in its current form would have disastrous unintended consequences to the community of South Salt Lake for years to come,” said John Prince, an SSL landowner.

The developers pointed out numerous code changes such as changing the required townhome width of 200 feet to match the high-density required width of 250 feet.

Is it a change or not a change?

“We didn’t make any policy changes,” White said on many occasions.

The council’s own attorney, Doug Ahlstrom, agreed saying, “There is no policy changes ... the staff is not trying to sneak something by you.”

But developers saw it differently.

This is how both views are correct. In the current city code both requirements are found. Therefore, there is nothing new in the code. However, to simplify the code, the two requirements were consolidated into one standard. When there was a conflict, the committee chooses the most logical or common standard. Therefore, it appears the requirement for townhomes changed. But the argument goes that since townhomes are high-density housing, it makes sense they should have the same requirement as all other forms of high-density housing.

The situation is like looking at the famous optical illusion picture of the young woman or old lady — what you see depends on what you perceive. The picture is the same, each person’s perception is different.

Other notes from the Oct. 9 meeting include: Developers were back providing tables of the changes in the code.

“If this passed, my land will be worthless,” Prince declared.

Prince did say the city has promised to work with him and others when their project conflicts with the code, but he said, “But it is only a promise.”

He went on to say that developers will likely need to hire a lawyer to develop in SSL and having so many issues to go through the planning commission could delay projects by four to six months. Other developers and landowners voiced similar concerns.

“I recommend passing the cleanup and making changes quickly,” White said in response.

For example, the TOD (Transit Oriented Development) overlay district where the code is 20 years old.

“Passing legislation and trying to fix it later is bad government,” Siwik said days later.

In the meeting, Ben Pender from District 1, shared the same opinion. “We have control now. Let’s fix then pass it.”

Hannah Vickery, deputy city attorney, reminded the council that staff works for them and can only work when the council provides a policy direction and that she hasn’t heard any policy direction yet.

Ray deWolfe, councilmember at-large, joined in by saying, “We are nervous that we don’t create a difficult experience or have de-

velopers shy away from developing in South Salt Lake. So, we need more reassurance from the city that we are doing the right thing in passing this ordinance.”

Conflict history

The nature of a strong mayor/city council city government tends to have more conflicts since the city council is the legislative branch and the mayor the executive branch.

However, sharp comments between the council and staff aren’t unusual.

For example, during the protracted work on the Granite Townhomes and Granite Library, deWolfe said, “We need to trust the staff.”

“Not in this matter,” Kindred declared.

Another example is this past budget process. Staff member after staff member stood before the council explaining their department needs over a series of public meetings.

At the end, they walked away frustrated as four councilmembers found money for first responders raises by slashing other department’s budgets.

“The conflicts have gotten worse over the past two years,” Wood said. l

How are 2019 projects and issues doing?

he City Journals decided to check in on some of the projects and issues from 2019.

Homeless Resource Center

The 300-men Homeless Resource Center (HRC) on 1000 West is nearing completion. A quick look in mid-October showed that interior work and landscaping were the only work going on. They missed their planned opening of mid-October after running into a cash flow problem. A $21 million bridge loan from Salt Lake County solved that problem.

On Aug. 15 at the Planning Commission meeting, an update on the conditional use permit process was given and a public hearing was open. With so many issues still not resolved, the public hearing remained open until Aug. 28. But, not so. The public hearing was not held until the Oct. 17 meeting.

After much posturing and wringing of hands, the conditional use permit (CUP) for the HRC was passed by the Planning Commission on Oct. 17 with little fanfare. Only one resident spoke during the public hearing, and she spoke in favor of passage. Version 12 contain softer words around the 17 conditions. This was down from the 21 conditions in Version 11 presented on Aug. 18. Shelter the Homeless (STH), landowner and applicant, still disputes some findings in fact but feels that can live with the revised CUP. “We object to the general tone. It is comparing an old system to a new system,” Preston Cochrane, the executive director of STH, told the commission.

One last step is for the STH board to approve the CUP at their next meeting on Oct. 22 (after press deadline). Both parties believe there will be some minor details to work out along the way. The HRC is planned for a mid-November opening. Once construction is done, the city is ready to give them a certificate of occupancy, which allows them to enter the building, while the CUP allows them to conduct business in the building.

Commissioner George Pechmann congratulated the parties for working so hard to reach consensus.

SSL PD Chief Jack Carruth also spoke at the meeting. “I believe the version 12 provisions are ones we can work with in partnership with others.”

Carruth did mention that year-to-date, his department has removed 47 homeless camps along the Jordan River and removed 250,000 pounds of trash.

South City

On Oct. 15, ground was broken for the South City development. It is located on the old Granite Mill property. The plans were presented to the Planning Commission on Aug.1 and the city council on Aug. 13.

history and one of the largest in Salt Lake County.

The project includes more than seven acres of commercial office, residential, retail and a hidden parking structure.

The first phase is a six-story, 150,000-square-foot office building that is already 85% leased. Tenants include PDQ. com, a software company and GBS, an employee/employer benefits company. Both companies are relocating from Salt Lake City and will bring 350 new jobs to South Salt Lake. Estimated completion for Phase one is December 2020.

Phase two includes a 10-story apartment building wrapped around a core of parking that includes 800 stalls. Estimated completion is December 2021. Subsequent phases include a third office building and hotel.

Dakota Pacific Real Estate acquired the property in partnership with Gardner Batt.

Dakota Pacific will develop the residential and parking structure and Gardner Batt is developing the office building. Layton and Oakland are the contractors for the project.

“It is Mayor Wood and her team’s vision that brings us here today,” Brian Dilley, the managing director of Dakota Pacific said.

He added, “Dakota Pacific buys and develops the best real estate property at the best location.”

“This is one of the biggest days for our little city,” Mayor Cherie Wood said in her remarks. She also thanked the city council and her staff for “trying something new and different.”

Fitts Park

Parking Issue

In an effort to help parking around The Zeller apartments, no parking signs were installed around the 300 East and Haven intersection. The signs already mark off the distance before an intersection. Some residents requested resident-only parking permits. The city hired an ombudsman to investigate the situation and found out that this request is in the minority.

In an Aug. 14 city council meeting, some council members suggested preventing apartment owners charging for on-site parking by ordinance. However, such an ordinance has not been written.

Dee mentioned how most future jobs in America will require some type of technology skill. He also mentioned, “that in many of communities they serve the youth lack access to technology. They lack the training and mentorships that will allow them to get higher paid jobs.”

Best Buy recognizes that while giving youth the tools to be creative, they also need mentors. Best Buy provide mentors at the Teen Tech Center. He challenged the teens to invite friends and always be creative.

Clubhouse Network is an international nonprofit with roots in Boston. They started in 1993 at the Computer Museum and have grown to over 100 clubhouses in 19 countries serving over 25,000 youth.

“I want them [SSL youth] to have every opportunity to get a head start on their college career,” South Salt Lake Mayor Cherie Wood said.

She pointed out the richness of locating the Teen Tech Center at the Columbus Center, which started out as a school. “This means that youth for 102 years have been educated in this building,” Wood said.

He is a recent graduate from Cottonwood High School and a former member of the award-winning Cottonwood High School Robotics team. France became involved in Promise South Salt Lake in the fall of 2016.

However, he had his doubts about staying at school for two more hours.

“After two days, I liked this program.

The kid that found it annoying to stay at school for two more hours was then fascinat-

ed by it and would pray on a daily basis in class for school to be over just so he could stay after in the Promise program,” France said.

He encouraged the youth to do wonderful things with the tools in the Teen Tech Center and added, “From my experience with the robotics team, this technology is hard to get. I would highly advise every kid not to take them for granted and use them wisely.” l

n Sept. 25, the Granite District Para Committee held a paraeducator job fair. While paraeducators are used throughout a school, this fair focused on special education.

“The fair was a success with 30 to 40 hires as a result of the fair,” Michele Morgan, a member of the District Para Committee, reported.

At the fair, attendees completed an application and then were interviewed.

Shelby Silver, a 22-year-old attendee from South Jordan, said, “This is something I always wanted to do. I used to help my mother in her classroom. I just want to help people.”

“There is always a need for people to come build a good relationship with the students,” Jennifer Christensen, assistant principal at Cyprus High School, said.

Missed the fair? Don’t worry. Paraeducator positions are available on the Granite School District (GSD) website www.graniteschools.org/hr/employment-opportunities. The positions are not listed separately. You will need to look for keywords like child care or behavior support or instructional assistant.

Paraeducator

A paraeducator is an adult assistant in the classroom. Formerly called teacher’s aides, the term paraeducator better represents their expanded role.

The National Education Association (NEA) report, “Employment of paraeducators has grown steadily and their functions have changed dramatically since they were introduced into classrooms as teacher aides in the 1950s.

Their duties are no longer limited to recordkeeping, preparing materials, or monitoring students in lunchrooms and other settings. Today, paraeducators are active team members that provide assistance with instruction, classroom management, and other direct services to students and their families.”

In the Granite School District, there are three types of special education paraeducators: Resource paraeducator which is a person that helps one-on-one or a small group that comes in and out of the resource classroom every day.

Inclusion paraeducator is a special paraeducator who works with a student that has a medical issue or just needs extra support during the day.

Special classroom paraeducator are assigned to work in one special classroom. These classrooms are a different classroom setting for students who may need more support than in a regular classroom.

Whichever the type, special education paraeducators care for the student’s physical and emotional health and safety, affirm their abilities, and strive to promote dignity in all relationships.

Morgan outlined the qualifications: Have a high school diploma or GED, be able to lift 50 pounds, be a responsible person, have a positive attitude and be patient working with children.

Depending on the type of paraeducator the starting wage is either $11/hr. or $13.20/hr. The district provides additional districtwide and in-school training allowing paraeducators to change lanes and increase their pay.

Key groups for hiring

GSD Special Education are focusing on three key groups that a paraeducator job might be the right fit for.

Parents: Morgan indicates this is a great job for a stay-at-home parent.

Their schedule would match their children.

College Students: For college students thinking about becoming teachers, this is an opportunity to get experience. The on-the-job training will also help in their college studies. Another incentive is the Paraeducator to Teacher Scholarship (PETTS) program administered by the Utah Board of Education.

Eligible paraeducator will be awarded up to $5,000 per year toward tuition costs.

Coaches: Often an individual wants to be a coach, but their current job doesn’t allow the time. Being a paraeducator allows these individuals to work in the school and stay to coach their team. Granger High School head football coach, Pala Vaitu’u, is a paraeducator.

Morgan explained why people should get involved.

“I just think it is a wonderful opportunity not only to earn some money, but I just feel like it is a such a great chance to make a difference in somebody’s life. I think this is one of the biggest benefits of working in the schools.

You can’t do anything better with your time then to work with a student and watch the lights go on and make connections,” Morgan said. “It is the best feeling in the world.” l

Cottonwood’s English teacher named Utah teacher of year, encourages students to have a voice

H

undreds of students have benefitted from a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, that being taught by the 2019-20 state teacher of the year.

While many students have enrolled in her English classes the past five years, they have known something that others outside of Cottonwood High are realizing now – that Lauren Merkley stands apart from her peers, intertwining fun with learning and making them feel successful.

“My daughter says that she makes every student feel smart,” said Cottonwood Alumni Association Co-president Jane Metcalf. “She is just fabulous with the kids.”

Not one to bask in the limelight and quick to embarrass, Merkley said she was humbled when the state teacher of the year award was presented to her Sept. 5, the night before Cottonwood’s homecoming celebration where she was honored again at a pep assembly and at halftime of the football game.

“It was like the ‘teacher Oscars,’” said the five-year veteran teacher. “It was all fun. I wasn’t nervous because I talked about something I care about. I love teaching.”

Merkley, who graduated from Cornell University in English, knew she wanted to teach, but she didn’t begin that career until after working in the fundraising field for 10 years.

“I always wanted to be a teacher, but I got involved in grant writing,” said the beloved teacher who grew up outside of Chicago in Evanston, Illinois. “I knew I wanted to teach kids from all over the world and when we moved here, and I interviewed with (then principal) Alan Parrish, I knew Cottonwood was the perfect school for me.”

While many first-year teachers are nervous about meeting students, grading papers and teaching the curriculum, Merkley said that first year “was a magical time. There’s no love like a first, and the relationship with those students was very special. It’s the hardest work I’ve ever done, but those kids mean everything.”

During that first year, Merkley’s students read George Orwell’s “1984,” and through discussion, they “learned the novel provided them arguments for what the most important thing was that they wanted the world to know.”

So Merkley embraced that concept and lead students outside where they wrote their messages on the sidewalk for what they wanted the world to know.

“One of the biggest things I do is to let everyone have a voice. They can express their opinion and interpretation, and others can disagree, but they need to be welcome. I remember Mr. (Warren) Wolfe when he taught me at Evanston Township High School, smiling and welcoming me to express my dissent about the interpretation of ‘A Streetcar Named Desire.’ I don’t know if he supported it or not, but we had an amazing discussion,” she said.

They also listened to Merkley recite Shakespeare’s “Macbeth” in a dark classroom, used for effect.

“I wanted them to experience a taste of what it was about,” she said.

Many of those students she had in the first year ended up being taught by Merkley again in her second year as she began teaching Advanced Placement English Language.

“I want them to get to know rhetoric, how to read about the world, news, politics.

We’ve had amazing discussions after reading about capital punishment. We’ve learned about 9-11, and I’ve shared what it was like living in New York at the time. We’ve analyzed citizenship and have read political cartoons. The class attracts students once they realize it’s more real world and not ‘old books’ as some students say,” she said.

Cottonwood Assistant Principal Mike Miller said he learns something every time he observes Merkley teach.

“She’s simply amazing,” he said. “Every time I observe her, I wish I would have been as good as her.”

While Merkley admits teaching can be

hard work and isn’t always fun — grading papers is her least favorite part — she has learned to keep a “locket” of notes from students who have appreciated her dedication and thanked her for teaching them.

Some of those students may have been the ones who also have nominated her for Cottonwood’s outstanding teacher of the year.

Last spring, Merkley knew she was one of nine educators and one administrator that won Granite School District’s Excel Awards.

She received $1,000 and a sculpture at the banquet.

From there, she completed an application and wrote essays and was observed teaching by a committee before being named the district’s overall outstanding teacher in May. Over the summer, the process didn’t lighten up as she wrote more essays and interviewed with the state board of education, PTA and teacher unions representatives, for-

mer teacher of the year and others before being awarded $10,000, a wooden mantel clock and the title of the state teacher of the year.

“I learned I was one of the five finalists earlier, but I didn’t know until the ceremony that I won,” she said. “I thanked my husband, who is my biggest supporter. He will sit beside me as I grade papers.”

She also thanked her students.

“Her speech last night was humble and advocating for all the kids,” Principal Terri Roylance said. “Her passion is the kids, but she was absolutely shocked to win. We are all so proud of her.”

Granite School District Superintendent Martin Bates agrees.

“We couldn’t be more proud and flat out honored to have her on our team,” he said.

“What a deserving person. The kids just worship her and there is a genuine gracious love for her. She really cares for them and is great representative for the state of Utah.”

Merkley represents the state and she and other state and territory winners will be considered by the national selection committee for the national teacher of the year, who will be introduced to the American people by the U.S. president. During the official year of recognition, the national teacher of the year will travel nationally and internationally as a spokesperson and advocate for the teaching profession.

However, Merkley hadn’t even thought about any of that after receiving a 10-minute standing ovation at the school’s pep assembly and before going out at halftime on the football field of the homecoming game.

“This has all been shocking; it’s taken my breath away,” she said. “It’s all very touching. I just love the kids. I know it sounds cliché, but it’s the truth. I love being in their corner, being their champ, watching them find their way from squirrely 16-yearolds and blossoming in the world.” l

CITY NEWSLETTER City on the Move is Movin’ on Up

October was a busy month filled with many exciting new additions to our City.

The Best Buy Teen Tech Center opened in the Columbus Community Center, an expansion to the west of Fitts Park was completed and the neighborhood pocket park at 500 East along the S-Line opened.

To top it all off, we broke ground on the Mayor Cherie Wood long-awaited development that will help reinvent our City and define our downtown.

When I was first elected, we got to work crafting a master plan for South Salt Lake’s downtown. As a lifelong resident, I felt that one key economic driver missing from the City was a robust and welcoming downtown area — we set our sights on bringing to life the forgotten area around the old Granite Mill.

We started by drawing pictures, collecting ideas from other great cities and adapting them to South Salt Lake. The drawings showed a beautiful, walkable neighborhood with shopping, cafes, hotels, offices and housing. With this dream on paper, we started laying the groundwork to make our dream for our City a reality.

Using a bold master plan as our roadmap, we focused on building infrastructure and attracting anchor businesses to the area. The new streetcar line helped bring growth to the area, attracting the valley’s newest breweries, distilleries and other creative businesses. We continue to expand Parley’s Trail to provide walkable and bikeable paths, a large grocery store opened, and modern townhomes and apartments were built.

The area is really starting to come to life and people have been taking notice.

When Dakota Pacific, a local developer, presented their vision of the area to us, we knew they were the right partners to bring our downtown to new heights! The project, dubbed South City, includes more than seven acres of commercial office, residential living, retail space, and a “hidden” parking structure. The vision will become a reality over the course of the next few years.

The first phase is a six-story, 150,000-square-foot office building that is already 85 percent pre-leased. Tenants include PDQ.com, a software company, and GBS, an employee/employer benefits company. Both companies are relocating from Salt Lake City and will bring 350 new jobs to South Salt Lake. Estimated completion for Phase I is December 2020.

Phase II includes a 10-story apartment building wrapped around a core of parking that includes 800 stalls. Estimated completion is December 2021. Subsequent phases include a third office building and hotel.

Our City is On the Move. South City will bring vibrance to the area that will define our downtown as an amazing place to live, work and play. It will also build our economy, which benefits our entire community.

I hope you share my excitement for all the great new additions to our City. I am committed to investing in our community and making it a place where families can continue to thrive for generations to come. We are a City On the Move and we are Movin’ On Up.

City Council Corner – Funding Public Safety

By Portia Mila City Council District 4 Fall has firmly landed on our doorsteps. As I look ahead to Thanksgiving, I find myself reflecting on the past year and the things for which I am grateful. I’d like to share a few.

I am truly grateful for the support and love of my family, friends, and community. I am thankful for the caring and friendly residents, for my committed colleagues who work to make South Salt Lake a great City for all and the dedicated men and women who serve in our City’s Public Safety Departments. Our police officers and firefighters put their lives at risk every single day to make South Salt Lake a safer place.

As many will recall, last November we lost one of our committed police officers, Officer David P. Romrell. His life was cut short while keeping us safe. Officer Romrell dedicated his life to the safety of others, serving in the Marine Corp. prior to joining the South Salt Lake Police Department. He was a kind, professional police officer who treated everyone with respect.

Our City is so fortunate to have whole Departments of safety personnel who are committed to South Salt Lake, just as Officer Romrell was. I firmly believe these good men and women deserve a similar commitment from the City in return; we can do

this by providing all our public safety personnel a fair, competitive compensation package.

For years, our public safety programs have been grossly underfunded. As a City Councilwoman, I am committed to finding a sustainable funding source for South Salt Lake’s Public Safety Departments to ensure we can attract and retain talented men and women.

This year, the Council was able to carve out funding to provide an increase for public safety; however, it didn’t go far enough. Our public safety officers’ salaries are still below those of neighboring cities, meaning we will continue to lose good, experienced personnel. I, along with others in the City, will not give up the fight until a solution to this funding issue is resolved and our public safety personnel receive competitive compensation.

We must invest in the men and women who play a vital role in our safety and the success of our City. I’d like to thank all the South Salt Lake’s Public Safety personnel. We are truly a better City because of your dedication to keeping us safe. I will continue to work in good faith on your behalf to ensure you receive the compensation you deserve.

Leaf Bags South Salt Lake residents can participate in an annual leaf bag collection program. Each fall season, five leaf bags are supplied to residents at no cost. Bags can be picked up at the Public Works building located at 195 W Oakland Ave beginning in October.

Residents must show a valid ID with a South Salt Lake address in order to obtain city provided bags. The leaf bags will be picked up curbside through the end of November.

Public Safety 2019 Changes to the South Salt Lake Fire Department Our Fire Department started on December 2, 1943. At the time, citizens were a huge part of the operations of the fire department.

Volunteers from the community would race to the fire station grab whatever gear they had, jump on the engine and respond. This practice carried on until July 1981. We then moved to a part-time staffing model. The firefighters received an hourly rate of $7 for the first hour and $3.35 for every hour after that. Oh how things have changed; this year brought to an end of our part-time paid program. The South Salt Lake Fire Department, for the first time in our history, has become a 100% fulltime career fire department.

This transition has been a daunting task, we first started with a job announcement for 18 openings for fulltime employment. The recruiting and testing process for the open spots was difficult and time consuming, trying to find the best candidates for the job and our customers that we proudly serve. The final responses to the

job announcement totaled 178 candidates.

The next task was vetting the certifications of the applicants and seeing which ones met our criteria. After three different hiring processes, we found all of our needed personnel. The candidate who traveled the most miles to Interim Fire Chief get here is Carlo Elter. Carlo is an 8-year Terry Addison professional firefighter with the Baltimore Maryland Fire Department. With this hiring we also brought on four female firefighters, bringing the total to nine fulltime female firefighters within our department.

As your Fire Department, we are proud to have these new men and women protecting the citizens and businesses in our community.

Increased Traffic Accidents with Winter Weather

Each year we see an increase of traffic accidents during the winter weather months. With temperatures dropping below freezing, road conditions lead to an increased chance of being involved in an automobile accident.

From Nov. 1 of last year to Feb. 28 of this year, there were a total of 406 traffic accidents reported to and investigated by the South Salt Lake Police Department. Several of those accidents resulted in injury and severe damage to vehicles. Our goal each year is to reduce the amount of vehicle accidents and injuries that occur in our City.

Below are a few safety tips provided by the U.S. Department of Labor, Occupational Safety and Health Administration. Please take a moment to review and drive safely as the winter months approach.

They will also be preparing and delivering hot dinners for a handful of other local families.

MILLCREEK STATION APARTMENTS – NEARING COMPLETION This 70-unit multifamily residential development is located at 3196 S Washington Street, adjacent to the Millcreek TRAX Station. The project will have a mix of units ranging from onebedroom to four-bedroom. Fifty-six of the units will be affordable, targeting households with incomes ranging from 25%-50% of the area median income (AMI). The park still needs a name! Please submit your suggestions to the city. The winning entry will get the honor of being recognized for naming the park. Promise Grand Opening: Best Buy Teen Tech Center October 1 brought the grand opening of the new Teen Tech Center. The partnership with Best Buy and The Clubhouse Network has provided our youth with access to state-of-theart equipment. The space is dedicated to teenagers having access to technological tools that will help them with college and career readiness.

The event was truly youth-centered with Mayor Cherie Wood, Promise Director Kelli Meranda, Coordinator Kayla Mayers, and Best Buy General Manager Bryan Dee speaking about the benefits this will provide youth. Our Youth speaker, Jevahjire France, gave an inspiring speech on the impact that adults in

South Salt Lake have had on his life and what he thinks this space will do for teens. South Salt Lake teens in attendance helped run activity stations, such as green screen magic, circuitry with makey makey, button makers, music making with beat pads and virtual reality. The space will continue to be youth centric with projects led by teens and workshops to teach them coding, robotics, creating video games, and much more!

The vision is to provide teenagers inspiration and internal motivation to seek out careers where they can utilize their passions and creativity to make a living. Promise Deputy Director Selected for NIOST Fellowship Brandis Stockman has been accepted into the National Institute of Out of School Time (NIOST) National Afterschool Matters Fellowship. The Fellowship is a one-year professional development and leadership training program, unique in its national reach and incorporation of technology for ongoing collaboration.

Brandis will learn alongside other afterschool professionals from around the country. She will engage in a collaborative process of study, conversation and shared investigation of Out of School Time practice, policy and experiences. They plan to assess their work with a

view toward improving quality and impact. We are proud of Brandis and thrilled to see what will come from her NIOST fellowship.

Historic Scott School Announced as Utah Afterschool Exemplary Program of the Year Taylor Kirch and her team at the Historic Scott School have been selected to receive the Program of the Year award at the Annual Jumpstart Conference on November 1.

The Historic Scott School’s afterschool program builds positive relationships with school-day staff and administrators by consistently communicating with their feeder schools regarding homework concerns, behavior expectations and family needs.

Program staff creatively build relationships by involving youth in important decisions, empowering them to feel a greater sense of program ownership.

The program houses a “sanitation station” where youth or families can grab essentials they might not have at home like toothbrushes, toothpaste, soap, combs, sanitary pads, deodorant, etc. The sanitation station

helps youth learn about personal hygiene, while not feeling embarrassed by potentially lacking access to items. Donations for the “sanitation station” are gladly accepted Monday-Thursday from 3-6 p.m. at Historic Scott School.

The program has created a safe space for youth who are often uncomfortable in a typical afterschool setting by creating group norms that encompass acceptance, freedom of self and respect. Youth participate in activities such as Spoken Word, book club, and art activities, which allow for a greater sense of expression without fear. The program’s “open door” office policy helps youth feel comfortable approaching staff and gives youth the opportunity to have open and honest conversations, which has created a true sense of community. Congrats to Taylor and her team!

Paid parental leave comes to SSL employees

I

n a somewhat rare action, the South Salt Lake City Council passed unanimously two important resolutions on Sept. 18. They passed a resolution on paid parental leave and a resolution on requiring an apprenticeship program at certain job sites. The passage was spearheaded by Mark Kindred, councilmember at-large.

Paid parental leave

Speaking about the importance of paid parental leave, Kindred said, “Because it’s the right thing to do. Especially with no action at the federal or state level it falls to local governments to try and implement paid parental leave programs. Research indicates paid parental leave has positive effects on infant health and maternal health and it also promotes gender equality. Not many cities in Utah have a benefit like this and in a competitive hiring environment where public sector jobs might not always be at the forefront. Every benefit counts. I hope that helps.”

While offering paid parental leave is a growing trend, it still is not mainstream. According to the Mercer’s 2018 Survey on Absence and Disability Management, “About two-fifths — some 40 percent — of survey respondents said they now offer paid parental leave for both the birth and non-birth parent, compared to about 25 percent in 2015, per the survey.”

The council started to discuss paid parental leave in a work meeting on Aug. 22, 2018. Over the time, Kindred and others spoke with many municipalities about their programs or lack of programs. The council voiced that paid parental leave is not a budget buster because the funds to pay the employee during the leave is already in the budget.

In those cases, where overtime was used to cover the employee, such overtime is also already in the budget.

fect Sept. 19, is a change to the SSL Policy and Procedure manual. It allows employees who are eligible for and meet the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) criteria to receive two weeks (80 hours) of consecutive paid leave due to the birth or adoption of a child. In addition, birth mothers who are eligible for FMLA are entitled to an additional six weeks (240 hours) of consecutive paid leave immediately after the birth to recover from the physical and medical effects of pregnancy and childbirth. Parental leave must be taken within six months of the birth or adoption of the child.

“I support it,” Mayor Cherie Wood said.

“I am just trying to understand the impacts, including budget impacts.”

Apprenticeship program

The apprenticeship program was introduced to the council in a work meeting Aug. 28. The proposed resolution was modeled after the one passed by Salt Lake County.

There was some initial pushback from Dennis Pay, the city engineer and Sharen Hauri, the urban design director. They were concerned about unforeseen impacts on future development in the city. Another concern is that developers might see this as another SSL rule and go elsewhere. A final concern is the impact on federal funds for projects.

There was no more public discussion before passing the resolution.

The resolution requires contractors and subcontractors working on all qualified projects to have at least 10% of the work done by an apprentice of a trade. Qualified projects are contracts issued by South Salt Lake City on or after July 1, 2019, for all South Salt Lake City-owned building improvements or public works projects estimated to exceed $500,000.

certifying the names of all workers performing labor hours, their trade, hours worked, and designation as journey-level worker or apprentice.

If a contractor or subcontractor on a qualified project does not comply and the requirement is not adjusted by the mayor, the contractor will be assessed a penalty fee amount for each hour that is not achieved.

The amount is based on a sliding scale of how well they applied.

“I also fought (not as long) for the apprenticeship ordinance for the same reason. It’s the right thing to do and promotes a skilled trades workforce, especially on projects in South Salt Lake. We have many programs (that rightfully) focus on the importance of a college education, but we also should focus on skilled trades that don’t always require a college degree to get a skill that leads to a good job,” Kindred said.

“While it is a good thing,” Wood said.

Columbus Center hosts 12th annual Chess Tournament

T

he long corridors in the Columbus Center (2531 S. 400 East) usually host kids participating in the after-school program, but on Nov. 2, it is transformed into an all out chess tournament. Kids age five to 18 come from all over Utah to attend the annual chess tournament, which began in 2007.

According to Recreation Deputy Director Myrna Clark, “Our first tournament we had 70 participants, [now] we average around 120.”

It is no surprise that the chess tournament has gained momentum. Clark attributes the growth to the versatility of chess. “Chess was a tool we hoped that students, parents, and extended families can use as a means to understand logic, planning, strategy and have fun while spending time together. It is a lifelong game that even grandparents can be engaged in with their grandchildren.”

The logistics are fair, grouping players in accordance with their grade, which follow this structure: kindergarten-second, thirdfourth, fifth-sixth, seventh-ninth and 10th12th-graders. But that does not stop anyone from seeking a challenge. “We have had younger players come in and request to play up with the older group and have done very well,” Clark said.

There is typically between 30 and 50

schools that participate in the annual tournament. Of course, with that many schools there is a computer program that helps alleviate some of the pressure off the organizers.

Clark explained, “We use a computer program that randomly matches players in their perspective sections. Each participant plays in five rounds of games. The computer pairs each section in accordance to wins and losses after each round. By the end of round five results should reflect winners of each section.”

The great thing about the SSL chess tournament is that no matter your skill level, there is a place for you. It is about rallying together as a community that makes this tournament special. According to Clark roughly a third of the participants are beginners, and after their first delve into chess, she sees them return year after year.

Some of the older participants, according to Clark, “use the tournament as preparatory for the state tournaments in the spring.”

The tournament is scheduled Nov. 2 and check in begins at 8 a.m. There are trophies for each grade for students who place first through fifth. But don’t worry, all participants are awarded a participation medal. If you have not yet registered, there is registration available at the door for an additional $5.

asked why she thinks it is important and impactful, Clark replied, “It requires time, and very little space and not a lot of limitations.

Chess is recognized in over 100 Olympic communities as a sport. Everyone can play chess, but it is learning and understanding the game that helps the mind to stay active and

sharp.”

very Sunday Raj Mangaonkar meets at the Glendale Library in Salt Lake City to instruct participants in the practice of Sahaja meditation.

During the session, attendees take a break from their busy lives and focus the mind and body on their breath.

By doing so they are able to balance the centers of energy, known as chakras, inside of them.

“When you start meditating the energy starts working on every system. You get back your health and the problems disappear,” explained Mangaonkar.

The practice starts with calming your mind.

The teacher begins with reading statements that promote unity with oneself and others that the students think as they touch corresponding spots on their body.

The purpose of this is to address distracting thoughts that might intrude prior to the meditation.

Finally, before beginning participants rub their scalp in a clockwise motion, applying slight pressure.

It is then time to begin meditating. To start you place the palms of your hand facing upward on your lap.

With eyes closed you gradually breathe in and out, focusing on the warmth and coolness of your breath. If distracting thoughts arise one must try to refocus attention.

This is a hard and takes practice.

“These thoughts just come out of nowhere and occupy your mind. You don’t see them coming. It’s like a lightbulb. Thoughts of your past come from your conditionings, and thoughts of your future come from your ego,” Mangaonkar said.

The ultimate end of this practice is self-realization. The key to getting to there is consistency. It does not happen in a day.

Satish Nulu credits his daily well-being to the tradition. “A lot of things have changed. The way I used to think and feel,” said Nulu who has been practicing for 20 years. “For example, if you are flying on a plane you may have some happiness inside. I feel the same way sometimes. Cottonwood cross country team is small but mighty

Cottonwood only has 19 members on their cross-country team, where most other teams in the region have at least double that amount. But it does not stop them from giving their all, said coach Jason Baker. (Nichole Duffy/City Journals)

n Oct. 11, the Cottonwood Colts cross country team faced off with seven others from the region at the Cottonwood Complex for regional championships.

The course was comprised of a 3-mile run with hills and tough terrain. The Friday afternoon meet began at 2:30 p.m. and started off with the junior varsity girls run, followed by junior varsity boys, then varsity girls and varsity boys.

It was a clear, crisp day for the runners who bounced or did sprints to keep their blood flowing before the race.

The Colts sported the classic black and yellow running jerseys as well as black and yellow sunglasses to add some flair while protecting their eyes from the sun. When asked what makes their Cottonwood team special, senior and co-captain Rachel Rosenberg said, “We are small but mighty.”

Rosenberg is right about the size. Cottonwood only has 19 members on their cross-country team, where most other teams in the region have at least double that amount.

But it does not stop them from giving their all, said coach Jason Baker. What makes the team great, he said, is that they “buy into the system and work hard making traditions themselves.”

It is not only the athletes that pour themselves into the cross country mindset, but the fans as well. Spectators ran from one check point and across the complex to reach the next check point before the runners did in or-

der to cheer them on.

The boys junior varsity team, being five members strong, made some personal records for themselves. Joab Boss beat his personal best by 1 minute 30 seconds. Will Sintyl said they are able to compete by “believing in ourselves that we can do it and pushing each other.”

The highlight of the meet, for one senior, was especially monumental. Cody Madsen celebrated his 18th birthday that day and earned himself a birthday present he will not forget.

Madsen finished the race by setting a personal record of 15:21 beating his previous score of 15:50.

Not only was it a personal record but it also earned him the third-place spot overall, ensuring his advancement to the state finals and a spot on the first team all-region.

Madsen said he can contribute to his team by working hard and not giving up.

“Even through the downfalls it is still a fun sport and, if you keep working, eventually you reach the top,” he said.

Joining Madsen at the state finals will be eight fellow classmates.

The Colts also had five student athletes that received the Academic All-Region award, which is only given to seniors who have a 3.75 grade point average or higher.

Bare Bones brings open mic scene to Salt Lake

or Lio Vaitai, moving from Southern California to Salt Lake City was an adjustment that he felt was hard, notably because of the lack of a prominent open mic scene.

Back in California, he would go to open mic nights where there were thousands of people in attendance and the line would stretch out the door.

“I’ve gone to different events and I tried to look for exactly what I felt when I was in California,” Vaitai said.

After living in Salt Lake for seven years he took his love for local talent and desire for other people to express their feelings through art and created Bare Bones. He billed the event on social media as a gym where people could go to work out their creative muscles.

The event took place in the Impact Hub underneath the warm glow of red lighting.

Close to 75 people were in attendance to watch dancers, songwriters and poets perform.

Lawrence Iongi, who is a close friend of Vaitai, ran the show announcing the artists before their turn on stage.

“There’s no color, race, shape or size to this event. Everyone can come enjoy this event and be vulnerable,” he announced passionately before the audience.

One of the standout performances of the night was that of Sacoya Anderson. She did a dance to the song “Shae Butter Baby” by the artist Melody Reyne.

Her dance was a dramatic recreation of a past relationship that she was in. It began with a joyful exuberance with the choreography being carefree and upbeat. Toward the end it became more aggressive and tense.

the guitar to songs about lost love, and did interpretative dances to poetry.

Vaitai was pleased with how the event turned out and spoke with confidence and a measured tone when describing his reaction to the turnout.

“I think I have a really particular vision of what I like. All of the people that performed tonight are friends of mine that I know are talented, and that I respect their craft and they put into it as much as I put into my craft,” explained Vaitai.

He shared the event through word of mouth and relied on local talent who have large followings to drive the turnout.

For him, the challenging part was organizing the event.

“The planning is something that I’m learning—how all of this goes, how we set up, how we prep for who’s going to even be a part of it, because I don’t know,” Vaitai said.

“I had a presale and maybe 10 tickets were sold, and then tonight it was a whole different response than I was expecting.”

Vaitai recognizes the tremendous potential in what the event can become and attributes the large turnout to people looking for the same type of event in the community.

Eventually, he wants the open mic night to transition into a creative lab where artists can combine their talent to create new productions on the spot.

“I envision creating shows for people, no longer open mics. Getting a bunch of artists together and bouncing ideas back and forth from each other and just creating a show from start to finish from every artist.”

For now, Vaitai plans for the event to be a monthly happening. l

Alternative Thanksgiving

T

hanksgiving, aka Turkey Day, is rarely about the turkey anymore, as the percentage of herbivores continues to rise.

Thanksgiving isn’t as common anymore either, it seems that “Friendsgiving” is much more prominent. Just as the traditional food and holiday is favoring alternatives, you might need some alternatives for the holiday cooking as well.

Since it’s rumored (dare I say, proven?) that the price of turkey spikes for the holiday, let’s find a cheaper alternative for that. Don’t worry, if you’re a diehard carnivore, there’s still meat alternatives for you: which may include stew meat, ham, chicken or fish.

Fantastic vegetarian and vegan alternatives exist for everything Thanksgiving.

Alternatives to turkey include: cauliflower steaks, pot pie, mushroom Wellington, cauliflower alfredo, gobi musallam (whole roasted cauliflower) and lasagna soup. Alternatives to gravy include: soup, mushroom gravy and onion gravy. Alternatives to stuffing include: stuffed acorn squash or bell peppers, mushroom croissant stuffing and carrot soufflés.

Alternatives to mashed potatoes include cauliflower gratin, mac and cheese (preferably topped with bread crumbs), sweet potatoes and scalloped corn casserole.

And well, as long as you’re not tossing milk and meat into everything you’re cooking, you won’t need to alter your favorite recipe for green bean casserole, dinner rolls,

Luckily, there are many dishes that can appease both the carnivores and herbivores.

Sometimes, you just need to split the batch of whatever you’re cooking in half; leaving half for the vegetarians and vegans and half for the carnivores. Pizza, pasta, rice bowls and mashed potatoes all work great for compromise dishes. (Please be mindful of the kitchenware you’re using when cooking these dishes as some vegetarians have nightmares about cross-contamination.)

Make sure not to forget the salad!

Thanksgiving is a great time to get crazy with salads. Go fruity with a grape salad, a Honeycrisp apple salad, a pear salad, pomegranate salad or a mango-berry salad. Throw some fruit on top of your leafy greens, and you can’t go wrong. Or get rid of those leafy greens altogether and make a “fluff” or Jell-O salad. If you go this route though, read the ingredients on the package—some fluffs and Jell-O’s are not vegan friendly.

Now, if you haven’t jumped onboard with Friendsgiving yet, consider this your formal invitation. It’s a holiday-themed event centered around fantastic food and friends that doesn’t involve the risk of (politically-charged) arguments with the relatives.

If you are hosting or attending a Friendsgiving, you have more options. Since Friendsgiving usually functions more like a potluck, the more extravagant you get with

your food choice(s), the better. Everyone will think about bringing a salad, or potatoes or a pie. Don’t be the person to bring another replica side dish.

To avoid duplicates, start a Google doc, or other shareable document, with your friends in advance. You might want to plot out the desired courses in advance: appetizers, mains, sides, drinks, desserts, etc. Then, everyone can play to their strengths. The friend that is strictly carnivore can bring the meat options. And the friend that is strictly vegan can bring the vegan options. The friend that has a dessert Instagram account can bring their homemade cake. And the bartender friend can bring the drinks.

When utilizing the Google doc, make sure to note any allergies or other dietary restrictions anyone might have. No one wants to spend their holiday worrying about the availability of an EpiPen. In addition, if there’s going to be a good mix of carnivores, vegetarians and vegans, cookers might want to consider dividing their batches in half, one to include meat and one to exclude any meat or dairy, as mentioned above.

And remember folks, whether you’re attending a traditional Thanksgiving or alternative Friendsgiving, please remember to be a good guest. Ask the host what they need help with when you arrive, make sure to help clean up before you leave and, last but not least, express your thanks.

andwiched between October and December, November is the bologna of months. Everyone pulls it out, gives it a sniff, then tosses it in the trash. Once Halloween is over, we blast into a frenzy of Christmas shopping and decorating, forgetting all about this beautiful month full of autumn leaves, crisp apples and carb overload.

We need a marketing team to change the perception of November from “Brownish month when we count our blessings” to “A kaleidoscope of excitement. And pie.” Okay, maybe “kaleidoscope” is overkill, and it’s hard to spell, but you get the idea.

Thanksgiving continues its reign as the best holiday between Halloween and Christmas but even the cherished turkey day has its opponents. It’s almost impossible to tell the origin story of Thanksgiving without pissing someone off. Let’s just say people living in America (probably not its original name) in the 1600s created the first Chuck-A-Rama, minus the carrot-filled Jell-O. In the U.S., any holiday that has the tagline “An Attitude of Gratitude” is doomed from the start but what if we created a terrifying mascot? People like threats and merchandising. What if Gerta the Ghoulishly Grateful Goose (sold as a freakish Beanie Babies stuffed animal) flies into your bedroom on Thanksgiving Eve to make sure you’re being thankful. Not enough gratitude? The first Wednesday in November is Stress Awareness Day, created by parents who realize Christmas is weeks away and their children are reaching frenetic levels of idiocy. Maybe November needs its own alcoholic beverage that we start drinking on this day.
