CITY CONTINUES TO HONOR OFFICER DAVID ROMRELL

F

or almost a year, the South Salt Lake Police Department officers have worn an End of Watch patch on their left sleeve, the side closest to their heart. A fellow officer, David P. Romrell, was killed Nov. 24, 2018, the first South Salt Lake officer to die in the line of duty.

HISTORY

At around 5:30 p.m., Officer Romrell and Officer Carson Aprato responded to a burglary in progress at a business at 3575 S. West Temple. The officers confronted the suspect’s car. Aprato was to the left and Romrell was to the right. There was a parking island with shrubs between Romrell and the car.

In less than a minute, the suspect targeted Romrell by hitting the gas. The car became airborne as it jumped the parking island and shrubs. Romrell was able to fire his weapon before being sucked under the car.

Even with additional shots by Aprato, the car continued onto West Temple. The car became inoperable. Aprato went toward the car to see the suspects run. Knowing they could be found later; he returned to Romrell to start life-saving measures.

Romrell was transported to Intermountain Medical Center (IMC). Police Chief Jack Carruth arrived from a social event as Romrell was taken into the ER. He was soon sent for exploratory surgery to discover the source of internal bleeding. Granite Park students participate in a mock trial

wift justice happened in Judge Celena Peralta’s court on Nov. 21 when Samuel Snow (played by Anthony Bianca) was found guilty.

Students from Curtis Jones’ and Emily Mijarez’s U.S. history classes at Granite Park Junior High School got an up close and personal lesson in civics as they participated in a mock trial held at the South Salt Lake Justice Court.

“It gives the students an on-hand experience. It brings it to life,” Mijarez said.

Before the trial, students studied the process, including visits by council members, Mayor Cherie Wood and former Judge Marsha Thomas. They also toured the SSL Justice Court. Lisa Forrester, a court clerk, handled many of the details of making the experience possible.

away the gun, by saying, “This is Utah, everyone has a gun.”

In closing arguments, the state outlined the facts and refute the defense’s explanations. The defense pointed out that witnesses said they heard 10 shots, but only one shell casing was found. He finished by asking the jury to reach to the bottom of their hearts and find his client not guilty.

It took some time for the jury to deliberate, but they came back declaring Snow guilty. At that point, eighth-grader excitement came out as people cheered and the district attorney gave each other high-fives.

“I love to watch the kids’ reactions to the verdict because they get so excited,” Judge Thomas said. l

Dancing through the ages

A

s children filed into the dance studio at Cottonwood High School on Dec. 9, words of encouragement and kindness filled the air. It was not uncommon to hear phrases like, “What’s your name, sweetheart?” and “Do you want to be my new friend?” from the teachers.

What was astonishing was that these teachers were the Cottonwood dance company students, as they checked kids into the 14th annual young dancers workshop.

It was high energy from the start, as the student teachers kicked things into gear, getting this year’s young dance enthusiasts spilt into groups according to age.

“It’s good to have the students teach the classes,” said Cottonwood’s dance teacher Angela Garliardi Campos. “It teaches them about leadership and accountability.” Campos started the workshop her first year as a dance teacher at Cottonwood. Campos is passionate about dance and all that it brings to her students.

Leadership was definitely something the students were taking seriously. With an average of 75 kids participating, it had to be top priority.

Freshman Karri Kahle was at a small table checking kids in.

“I’m all over the place, bouncing off the walls, so I can relate to them a little bit,” said Karri when asked how she manages to get the kids checked in and to the right place with such a happy demeanor.

After check-in, kids are put into groups comprised of children ages 3-6, 7-11, and 1218, with a separate group for boys.

Training started right away. While one group worked on jumps and knee slides, another worked on helicopter arms and spins.

The student teachers were there amongst them helping every step of the way, literally.

Every age group averaged between five and seven student teachers, so if a dancer had dif-

ficulty, they would jump in and help them.

“It is a fun and inexpensive way to experience a dance class,” said Campos, “and they get to perform at an informal showing for family and friends.”

The fee for the three-day event is $25 and provides major fundraising for the Cottonwood dance company.

This year’s end of workshop performance follows the theme of dancing through the decades and each group is focused on their own unique decade.

Dancers age 3-6 focused on the roaring ’20s, dancing to beats that mimic the “Charleston” or the “Lindy Hop.” Chole Barnett, who is the dance company’s president said, “Dance has taught me to be kind to everyone, we all have struggles.” It didn’t matter what the student’s age or ability, everyone was helping, with a smile on their face.

“Which is a good thing,” remarked Campos, “because the kids look up to the high school dance company members that teach the classes, it gives them something to look forward to when they are in high school.”

Kelli Brklacich, who has a daughter in the dance company — Kenna, a junior — talked about the benefits of bringing her other daughter, 5-year-old Kylee to the dance workshop. “It’s great for her to be able to spend this time looking up to her sister,” she said.

Brklacich explained another advantage the workshop has on her younger daughter. “I think it’s important because it teaches them to mingle and follow directions. Plus, it helps with coordination and it’s nice for her to get out and exercise.”

Brklacich is right about the exercise.

performance with hits from the ’50s like “Rockin’ Robin” complete with twists and jives. Asked about the advantages of learning dance at a young age, Campos said, “If you learn dance at a young age it helps you to be less shy about moving when you are older.

Creative dance especially helps a child feel free and to think creatively in all aspects.”

When the dancers seemed to be losing focus, one of the student teachers stood tall at the front of the group and said, “Adagio,” an Italian dance word meaning “slowly, at ease,” which worked immediately as all the dancers looked up and repeated the word back.

The older group of kids ages 12-18 got to rock out to ’80s tunes, and their energy matched the upbeat music choice. This group was charged with excitement as they practiced more complex, longer sets of moves.

Campos says that dance is creative and expressive, and it allows people of any age to find their personal truths. The workshop is so impactful, she said, because “people that take dance class together become a community, a family.”

The boy’s group was an example of this community bonding, while they practiced some hip hop moves from the 2000’s era.

Practice was full of laughter and words of encouragement from both the teachers and the dancers.

“Dance allows us to live in the moment, it allows us to grow and expand in ways that other academics cannot,” Campos said.

The end of workshop performance mashes all these groups together to give the audience a taste of the decades and to show off some of the skills they learned from their new role models.

Cottonwood dance company has found a way to fundraise while bringing the community together around dance.

“Dance not only gives kids a creative outlet, it gives them a connection to something that is bigger than themselves,” Campos said. l

Granite Park Jr. High goes all out to honor veterans

My mother’s first deployment was when I was 9 months old. It didn’t affect me much. But when she was deployed again when I was 9 for nine months, that was hard,” a Granite Park Junior High School (GPJHS) student said during a Veterans Day Celebration assembly.

The assembly was held Nov. 11 at GPJHS. The theme was “My Heritage of Service.”

According to the society’s web page, “Our mission is to preserve and promote Scottish and American Armed Forces customs, traditions, and heritage in the state of Utah. Our membership is composed of active duty military, veterans, and supportive spouses who share a common interest in Scottish-American heraldry, patriotism, and service.”

PTSA, honored the students and staff of GPJHS with a large banner that was displayed in one of the halls. The banner recognized GPJHS’s commitment to celebrate military children and families over the past three years.

BATTLEFIELD CROSS

One of the highlights of the assembly was when five GPJHS students assembled the Battlefield Cross followed by playing of “Taps” and a moment of silence.

“We will together consider the ultimate sacrifice of those soldiers who never made it home — those for whom these crosses were made,” Aaron Wilson, the principal of GPJHS, remarked.

The Battlefield Cross or the Fallen Solider Battle Cross or simply the Battle Cross was used in WWI and WWII to identify the temporary grave of a fallen soldier. His rifle was stuck in the ground and his helmet placed on the stock of the rifle. This allowed Graves Registration Service personnel to remove the body for proper burial. The Battlefield Cross also became a symbol of the ultimate sacrifice of war.

Even though it is called a cross, it has no religious significance.

The current version of the Battlefield Cross consists of a rifle, helmet, boots and dog tags. Together, they have become a symbol of loss and mourning for the living.

The meaning of each part is not clear.

According to the National Museum of American History: “Interpretations vary regarding the meaning of the components, and how they are placed. The rifle facing downward means the soldier was killed in action; a rifle with a bayonet stuck in the ground tells us the soldier went down fighting. It’s not hard to interpret the placement of the boots or the presence of the dog tags: the soldier has marched the final march to battle, and he will never be forgotten.”

The assembly closed with a combined effort of the student video crew, dance company, and choir students. A medley of anthems of each branch of the U.S. military was played. Veterans of each branch were asked to stand and be recognized when their anthem was played. Students were invited to stand when the anthem was played of the armed forces branch in which their family member serves or has served.

One veteran honored was Sergeant First Class (retired) Neil Christiansen.

“Veterans Day is a day we can spread the knowledge and pride we have in this country to the next generation,” Christiansen said. l

City council approves pay raise for senior fire and police personnel

ver the past two meetings, the South Salt Lake City Council has worked on a budget amendment to provide an additional pay increase for certain public safety personnel. On Dec. 4, they passed the budget amendment.

After much work, the city council passes a $145,128 budget amendment for pay raises.

FIRST WORK MEETING

During the Nov. 20 City Council work meeting, Councilmember Ben Pender put forth the idea of a budget amendment to provide pay raises to police sergeants and lieutenants and fire captains and battalion chiefs.

In addition, he proposed an added merit step, allowing top-outed public safety personnel to receive a possible pay increase.

Pender referred to a new October pay comparison completed by the Unified Police Department (UPD). Pender pointed out with the pay increase given this year, entry officers are now rated five out of 13. However, topped-out officers are 12 of 13. In the case of senior officers, South Salt Lake Police Department sergeants are 11 of 13 and lieutenants are 12 of 13.

Pender’s proposal would make SSL more attractive for senior officers and experienced officers.

The budget amendment would cost $145,128 and go into effect Jan. 1 until fiscal year 2021, which starts in July.

When asked how to pay for the amendment, Pender suggested taking it out of Funds Balance. Funds Balance is like the city’s savings account. Mark Kinder, councilmember at-large, voiced support of the idea.

Other council members — Sharla Bynum, Portia Mila, and Ray deWolfe — while liking the idea of helping public safety personnel, voiced concern about having a sustainable source for the pay increase.

At Chairman Pender’s discretion, the council heard from Police Chief Jack Carruth, Interim Fire Chief Terri Addison and Kyle Kershaw, director of finance.

Carruth started his remarks by saying, “This is the first I have heard of the idea.”

He voiced concern about the city employees that work within the police department and weren’t eligible for the earlier 9% pay increase that was given in July. He mentioned that morale was an issue within

the department, and this was the second time pitting city employees against public safety.

“I will never sit up here and say no to giving my officers and staff raises. I just think we had an opportunity to go about this the right way. We are cherry-picking and we are isolating groups and segmenting them within the police department from each other,” Carruth said.

Addison asked the council to look at everyone — public safety and public employees. He suggested to fix the whole problem together.

“We got raises on their backs,” Addison said.

Kershaw told the council that they just received word that the state allotment for homeless migration will be $300,000 less in fiscal year 2021. This means more money to pay for the additional 12 police officers and 12 EMTs will need to come from city funds next year.

Kershaw voiced support for the chief’s remarks and voiced concern about passing a budget amendment without a dedicated revenue source and without looking at all competing priorities.

“Their time will come. We need to fix parts as we go along. The senior staff has suffered long enough,” Pender said.

It was decided to continue the discussion to the next work meeting and hold a public hearing during the next city council meeting.

In the work meeting, the council continued to discuss the budget amendment.

Pender pressed that the budget amendment would, “solve a pay inequity” and a “little bit is better than nothing.” deWolfe pointed out that this was a difficult issue because while there is a need, they are also leaving it for the next city council to resolve.

“It is good to fill the gap, but not a good budget practice to do it without a sustainable source,” deWolfe said.

The action was moved to a public hearing later in the evening. During the hearing, no residents spoke either for or against the budget amendment.

Chief Carruth did take the floor to tell the council that UPD is changing the way they are charging for crime scene processing.

Currently, the memorandum of understanding (MOU) between SSL and UPD states that UPD will bill out their work on an hourly basis. Starting Jan. 1, 2020, UPD is rescinding the MOU and will charge an annual fee of $202,000. The cost of crime scene processing services has been between $15,000 and $25,000 annually. This means to keep services with UPD, the city will need to find about $185,000, which is a new budget need.

the $202,000 and have less abilities. They checked with other agencies. West Valley was not interested, and they are awaiting word from Salt Lake Police Department.

Kershaw suggested that both budget needs be joined, and staff would write an ordinance for the next meeting.

Pender asked, “Can we pass what we want to pass this evening and put that on unfinished business for next week? ... I don’t want to hinge this that is in front of us tonight that has been planned. Knowing the chief has had this information for a month. I get doing your homework, but this information would have been helpful a couple of weeks ago for us as we are doing this budget amendment. I would say we go forward with this and if that materializes whether Salt Lake City or UPD we may have to call a special meeting and do another budget amendment.”

Kinder voiced agreement with Pender and asked how the UPD charge will be billed.

Before there was answer, the mayor suggested it be tabled for the new city council.

In response to which one, Wood said, “I would like both, personally. But certainly, the crime scene one.”

As chair of the council, Kinder called for a motion. After some silence, City Recorder Craig Burton, pointed out there was no ordinance before the council.

Kinder was surprised and asked Kershaw how long it would take to write an ordinance. Kershaw turned to legal.

“Generally, you publish your ordinance

at least 24 hours in advance of the public hearing. My understanding was that the conversation was still in flux and additional information was requested as of yesterday. ...

So, I’m not sure anyone had the information to put an ordinance together,” Hannah Vickery, the deputy city attorney, said.

A motion was made to move to the next meeting. However, Pender asked the council’s attorney, Doug Ahlstrom, for an opinion on the need to post the amendment for 24 hours.

Pender pointed out that during budget times, the staff was running to their offices and putting together ordinances. He wondered why not today as it was in the past.

Ahlstrom said there should be an ordinance and it should be written for everyone to see. When pressed about the 24-hour need, he said he had to think about it because this situation has never come up before.

“It has always been you get staff to cooperate with council and get you the documentation you need right when you need it and not to have it in advance is ridiculous, I’m sorry,” Ahlstorm said.

He went on to say that if the council wanted to act tonight, they could pass the resolution and ratify it next week when the written ordinance was in front of them.

Kinder agreed and called for the motion.

The budget amendment was passed 7-0 on a voice vote. The written ordinance was passed at the Dec. 11 meeting. l

Mountain America helps families find the purrfect fit

ver 160 homeless animals were able to go home for the holidays thanks to the Humane Society of Utah and Mountain America Credit Union channeling their inner Santa spirit while hosting their annual Fall in Love adoption event. On Nov. 23, visitors to the Humane Society could adopt a four-legged family member for free since Mountain America was paying for all adoption fees.

“Our hearts are full knowing that so many pets are sleeping in their new loving homes tonight thanks to our Fall in Love event sponsored by Mountain America,” said Humane Society of Utah Director of Marketing and Communications Deann Shepherd.

“We are beyond thrilled that so many people came to adopt a new friend and family member. It takes support from our community to save these pets’ lives, and this event has truly allowed us to change their world.”

Potential pet owners began arriving around 7 a.m. to get a spot in one of the many lines – depending on what type of animal they wanted to adopt. There were dog, cat, hamster and rabbit lines.

When regular adoption hours began at 10 a.m. Humane Society staff members took a specific number of visitors through the kennels at a time. This allowed for visitors to spend some time with the animals to ensure compatibility. When visitors had clicked with their new furry family member, Humane Society staff members discussed the responsibilities associated with adopting an animal.

After the adoptions were finalized, humans could take photos with their pets at a photo booth.

Almost all of the animals at the Humane Society were adopted during the event. “The available space allows the Humane Society of Utah to save hundreds more homeless pets by accepting additional owner-surrendered animals and animals from overcrowded shelters,” said Mountain America Assistant Vice President of Public Relations Brittani Forbush.

Over 140 pets were adopted with the first Fall in Love adoption event, which occurred over Thanksgiving weekend in 2018.

At the time, the Humane Society was trying to target the Black Friday crowds with the slogan “don’t shop, go adopt.” In 2019, they expressed that they wished to get animals home before the holidays, so the event was moved to the weekend before Thanksgiving.

“Mountain America is pleased to have helped so many pets find homes ahead of the holiday season,” said Mountain America Credit Union Chief Marketing and Public Relations Officer Sharon Cook. “We appreciate the overwhelming support from the community and look forward to continuing to save lives through our Pet of the Week program.”

Every Friday, a pet from the Humane Society is featured on the Pet of the Week segment on Fox 13 News and associated social media channels. If a viewer believes that the featured dog, hamster, cat or rabbit is right for them, Mountain America will pay for the adoption fees.

This segment helps create awareness and shape perception for the Humane Society. They not only have dogs and cats, but puppies and kittens, rabbits, hamsters and even birds. In addition, the segment helps create “awareness for dogs that might have a hard time getting adopted,” Forbush said.

Mountain America recognizes the roles animals play in human lives, especially as many members and employees have important four-legged family members. Their “love for pets combined with the company’s philosophy of giving back has been a driver in the credit union’s partnership with the Humane Society of Utah,” Forbush said.

Continuing the theme, Mountain America supports the Humane Educators Reaching Out (H.E.R.O.) summer camp. The eightweek camp teaches first graders through sixth graders “about the cost and responsibility of owning a pet,” Forbush said.

Mountain America and the Humane Society will continue to have the Pet of the Week and will host another Fall in Love event next year.

CITY NEWSLETTER 2020 Brings Opportunity

This is the year! It is 2020, a milestone year with a catchy name many of us held in our sights as “the future”, and it is now “the present”. For myself and City staff, it is a big year because we see it as one of transition and a time to make big plans.

Our City is guided in large part by our General Plan – a strategic plan combined with goals for Mayor Cherie Wood planning, economic development and community improvement. We last prepared a General Plan in 2009 and it is time for a rewrite.

Many of the goals that once seemed like distant dreams are now on-the-ground realities, such as Downtown SSL, a streetcar, highquality housing, new residents and homeowners, a vast network of stakeholders working on city issues, and a booming economy.

It really is remarkable how far we have come with community support, enthusiasm, investment and participation.

This was a team effort if there ever was one. Residents and businesses worked with city staff to envision a very different future and outline goals to get there. City Council members caught the vision and saw their role in adopting zoning codes and city budgets that would make an impact.

My staff and I brought forth ideas and solutions that would make an impact. We harnessed a booming economy to shape the community we want to live, work and play in. We are setting our sights on the next decade and will be kicking off a new General Plan process and encourage you to get involved this year.

Transparency is an absolute must in building the community we want to be.

Fortunately, city government is setup to instill transparency and shed light on the conversation every step of the way. This often starts in places like Neighborhood Nights and HOA meetings and progresses through planning commission and city council

meetings, and open houses on topics across the spectrum. I am fortunate to work with professionals who can state the facts, give a balanced assessment of the pros and cons, and consider the needs of various stakeholders. Every project and decision has steps where the issues are brought up, debated, and ultimately decided upon, in public. We also work hard to share information – with the press, through social media, our website, in this newsletter, through personal contact, and public noticing. The most important ingredient, still, is you. Citizens need to speak up, listen to the debate, learn about the issues, and help shape the future.

It is a balancing act, for sure. As our society shifts and our city grows, some things simply change. Priorities evolve, markets rise and fall, and there are always curve balls. Not every decision is easy, or a win-win, or even within our control.

My commitment is that I am always listening and advocating for you. I am putting our community’s needs first. Our city’s future is ultimately tied to the success of every single person in it. I devote each day to this goal– please join me in making a difference as we plan our future.

District 1 I am grateful and excited for the opportunity to represent District 1 on the city council in South Salt Lake. I enjoyed knocking doors and meeting my fellow neighbors, listening to their concerns and what they love about living in our city. I moved to South Salt Lake over five years ago and wanted to be involved with the community. I joined the Mental Health Coalition created by the city to address the mental health needs of our residents. I was impressed with the coalition’s hard work and dedication to improving the health of our residents.

I graduated from the University of Utah with a Master’s of Education and I am a licensed mental health counselor. I work as a Program Administrator for the State of Utah, collaborating with local and state partners to implement best practice in mental health crisis services.

I love living in South Salt Lake, we have a strong community and there are exciting developments happening in our city. I enjoy the outdoors, and in my free time I like ride my horse Bel, and spend time with my friends and family. I look forward to serving for the next four years.

Public Safety Winter Fire Safety Did you know that house fires occur more in winter than any other season? The winter season brings with it some additional safety concerns. I would like to share some winter fire safety tips with you. Heating equipment is involved in 1 out of 7 reported house fires. All heating related fires occur during the months of December, January and February. When you are using any portable heating equipment, keep anything that can burn at least 3-feet from any heat source such as fireplaces, wood stoves, radiators or space heaters. Only plug one heating appliance (such as a space heater) into an electrical outlet. Never use an extension cord or power strip, they are only intended for temporary use.

An additional way to help increase safety during the winter is to winterize your home. Installing weather stripping, insulation,

and storm windows can help keep the cold out and decrease the need for additional heating devices. You can also insulate water lines that run along exterior walls, clean out gutters and repair roof leaks.

Install carbon monoxide detectors in your home and test them monthly. Additionally, have your heating system professionally serviced to make sure it’s clean and working properly to prevent carbon monoxide emergencies. Above all, regularly check on family and neighbors who could be at risk for cold weather hazards and have a wonderful, safe January.

ASSESS YOUR PREPAREDNESS LEVEL South Salt Lake Fire will discuss steps you and your family can take to prepare for a disaster in a monthly tip.

Assume that a disaster can happen, don’t think that it won’t. Your survival is 90% psychological, so being mentally and emotionally prepared improves your survivability. Part of preparations should be an assessment of your preparedness level. Taking this

initial step, you will have completed the most important stage of preparing yourself and loved ones for an emergency. To begin, assess the condition of fire and carbon monoxide detectors, accessibility and exit ability of doors in your home, amount of stored potable water, non-perishable food and quantity of vital medications. These steps set a baseline to building your level of preparedness.

David P. Romrell Public Safety Building We will never forget November 24, 2018 when Officer David Romrell lost his life protecting the community of South Salt Lake, or the funeral services on December 5, 2018 when thousands of officers from around our nation came to show respect. Those were days of loss, pain, honor and tribute as we said goodbye to our brother in blue.

As we entered into the year 2019, we knew that we would be honoring Officer Romrell, as we traveled to Washington D.C. to attend National Police Week, to see David’s name placed on the National Law Enforcement Memorial Wall. The year continued as David was recognized on the Utah Fallen Officers Memorial wall on the West lawn of our State Capitol, and as he was posthumously awarded and recognized several other times throughout the year.

We continued honoring Officer Romrell as we wore his “end of watch” patch on our right uniform shoulder, closest to the badge and to our hearts, serving as a reminder to our community of David’s sacrifice.

David’s locker was converted into a mePolice Chief morial in the men’s locker room, forever asJack Carruth signing locker #15 to him. This reminds us that David will forever be with us.

We dedicated an “end of watch” car by wrapping it with the thin blue line flag and David’s E.O.W. date. We had it driven in the 4th of July parade in honor of David.

And as the year came to an end, we recognized Officer David P. Romrell a year from the day he was taken from us, with the rebranding of the South Salt Lake Police Department building to the David P. Romrell Public Safety Building.

The David P. Romrell Public Safety Building will stand as a symbol reminding us all that public safety comes with a risk that all the men and women of the South Salt Lake Police Department are willing to take, even with their own life. As you approach the front doors of the police department you will see a new sign, the city’s police department logo, with David P. Romrell’s name displayed below. When you enter the police department you will immediately be greeted by a beautifully constructed memorial, honoring Officer Romrell in the form of a bronze bust.

Please stop by the Police Department to view the memorial located in the front lobby. You may also view Officer Romrell’s memorial locker upon request at our desk officer or records window located in the lobby of the South Salt Lake Police Department.

Over the last few years, redevelopment and construction in South Salt Lake has increased dramatically. Like other communities along the Wasatch Front, South Salt Lake is a built-out community that is seeing a major shift from singlestory development to higher density multi-story projects located along main roads and transit corridors. Community Happenings Justice Court Hosts Granite Park Jr. High Mock Trial Animal Shelter Update

Happy New Year from your local shelter! We’re having a wonderful fur filled season and would like to remind you of the adoptable furbabies we have at the shelter. They would love to go to furever homes for the New Year.

We would also like to recognize every dog owner that has been walking their dog on leash. By doing so, you are keeping our parks and sidewalks safe and enjoyable for everyone. We also appreciate those utilizing our city disposal stations for dog waste.

We know all about picking up after dogs and so we appreciate effort by owners to keep the parks and sidewalks clean. We wish you a Happy New Year and thank you for your continued support!

On November 21 Granite Park Jr. High 8th graders began the trial of the year: The State vs. Samuel Snow. There was tension and excitement in the air as Judge Peralta prepared to take the bench to preside over her first jury trial. Defense attorneys Xavier Yazzi and Ephraim Cano Garner looked confident yet serious as they gave last minute advice to their client, Samuel Snow (Anthony Bianca). District Attorneys Nava Sharma and Tu’imana Talanoa double checked their notes with law enforcement witnesses (Andre Thomas and Ruby Carranza Gonzalez).

Snow’s sister (Sofia Arostegui Romero) looked anxious on behalf of her brother, while his girlfriend (Leeloo Lerwick) appeared to be ready to take on the whole justice system by herself. The Club Bouncer (Joaquin Ramos-Matern), also an important witness, gave no indication of partiality concerning the matter.

Opening statements set the tone for what was to be a very emotionally charged night of testimony. Prosecutors animatedly drew facts from the witnesses while the defense attorneys objected and tried to establish lack of absolute identity. Finally, with all those in the gallery on the edge of their seats, the jury, Henry Rainey and Alaric Welsh began deliberations. To everyone’s surprise, in just minutes the bailiff was escorting them back into the courtroom. The moment had come. Would Samuel Snow be found guilty or not guilty? And the verdict… Guilty! The court erupted! Judge Peralto demanded order and Mr. Snow was taken into custody. Will he appeal the verdict?

No word on that yet.

Prior to this culminating event, GPJH 8th graders studied the judicial system in their Social Studies class. Throughout the semester they had visits from Mayor Wood, Council Member Pender, Judge Anna Anderson and Judge Marsha Thomas, who explained the various branches of government and their individual duties. In October, the students visited the court and heard directly from Defense Attorneys Nathan Evershed and Joel Kittrell, Prosecutor Brian Page, Midvale Justice Court Judge Augustus Chin, Court Clerk Monica Medina and Constable Brent Groth about their jobs within the judicial system. We hope to see many of these students rushing through the halls of justice in the near future in various capacities so we can say “we knew them when”.

Huge thank you to teachers Emily Mijarez, Curtis Jones and Principal Aaron Wilson for their work making this program a great success. Stay tuned for next year!

Promise Hser Ner Moo Community & Welcome Center

This past year, volunteers have poured into the halls and classrooms of the Hser Ner Moo Community and Welcome Center with a strong commitment to inspiring youth to engage in academics, community engagement and recreation. We hosted an estimated 150 volunteers, totaling 1,200 hours served. These hours were spent by students from local universities and colleges including the University of Utah and Westminster College, additionally local church groups and professionals offered of their time and expertise.

Cooking Club at Lincoln Elementary This semester Lincoln youth had the opportunity to host a cooking club through USU Extension’s 4H program.

Our students have been able to learn about what their bodies need to grow and thrive. The highlight each week is making nutritious snacks to enjoy. Through this club our students have been able to try smoothies and quesadillas for the first time – each were met with mixed reviews. Through hands on experiences and games our students have learned to identify different vitamins, proteins and carbs in their food. The youth even found cookbooks from the library and were eager to share them with all of us.

This club has helped them gain a love for cooking and understanding of nutrition to help fuel them through their lives. Thank you, Utah State University and 4H!

Teen Tech Center Field Trip Grant funds from Rocky Mountain Power Foundation afforded the Best Buy Teen Tech Center the opportunity for their first field trip. We were joined by youth from the Kearns-Saint Ann afterschool program. Youth were able to become engineers at the Microsoft store at City Creek on Dec. 4. The fi eld trip was the perfect mix of hands-on learning and free exploring, which is perfectly aligned with the learning model at the Teen Tech Center. The youth were able to use Scratch, a programming platform developed by students at MIT, to make a robot move and talk. The robots were even able to tell a joke by the end of it! The employees at Microsoft were all smiles while they watched the youth explore the store. They were able to interact with the technology by playing video games, using a giant TV to do trivia and checking out the latest and greatest gadgets at the store. The Teen Tech Center is so grateful for our partnership with Microsoft and for the grant from Rocky Mountain Power!

They hosted high quality STEM and recreation activities, and assisted with literacy, math and other tutoring needs. Volunteers provided financial literacy and college readiness courses, created hygiene and food kits and provided mentorship to the youth in program. Volunteers are vital at the Hser Ner Moo Community and Welcome Center as they assist in providing hands-on interaction to the youth we serve.

They continue to help us develop and maintain our strong community and for that we are grateful.

All that Jazz: Former beat writer releases book for Utah Jazz fans

atching his sons’ lacrosse games and his daughter’s volleyball games, Deseret News writer Jody Genessy says he’s watching his favorite sporting events, a far cry from when he was a self-described “fanatic” Utah Jazz fan who painted his face before going to the NBA games with his dad or spending nine years as a beat writer covering his favorite basketball team.

Even after calling it quits, like many greats before him — Jazz point guard John Stockton, power forward Karl Malone, one of the all-time winning most coaches Jerry Sloan, Genessy occasionally has returned to the arena, filling in on the beat, knowing the workload ahead of him.

“I loved covering the Jazz,” he said.

“As a kid, I tried to spin the ball like Adrian Dantley, and I grew up watching the Jazz.

Covering the Jazz, I was there first hand to see them, but it was also madness. It was a crazy travel schedule. I saw a lot of airports, car rentals, hotels and arenas, but never the touristy sites. “ Genessy said his routine would include covering morning shoot-arounds to get quotes then return to the arena at 5 p.m. to interview coaches, transcribe notes, look at stats before covering the game. He was on the road 90 days per year.

“I tried to show readers what it was like behind the scenes,” he said. “I had access to the guys in the locker room and I wanted to give Jazz fans a flavor, a feel of what it was like. By the end, I was mentally exhausted, it was a grind, and I knew it was time I needed to change my beat.”

Just after he let go of covering the Jazz in 2017, he was approached about writing the book “100 Things Jazz Fans Should Know & Do Before They Die,” it has been a steady seller on Amazon and will have a second printing.

After thinking about writing the book for a week and being encouraged by everyone, especially his wife, he agreed. One week later he had an outline of the book’s 100 chapters.

“As I sat down and typed up a list, Pete Maravich, the Jazz name, the team moving to Salt Lake City, Adrian Dantley, Stockton’s short shorts, ‘City of Utah,’ I became excited about the book,” he said.

Carving out time from his family, fulltime job and working as a health coach, Genessy spent the next five months, “writing it a little bit everywhere” in the break room at the Deseret News, at his home office, even at McDonald’s in his hometown of Herriman where he had free Wi-Fi and drink refills.

He spent hours “strolling through memory lane:” watching Jazz highlights from Pete Maravich (“I would have loved to see him play”) to Michael Jordan pushing off Bryon Russell in the NBA finals, and rereading his nine years of stories, including covering the

Hall of Fame inductions.

He read other accounts of the team, interviewed current and former players and coaches. Genessy even put out a poll on Twitter, which Mehmet Okur humorously responded, so it was included in “100 Things” book.

“I did get some fresh interviews, but I also used a lot of research,” he said. “If there was a good quote or information from a game at the time, it was truer than recalling it three decades later, so I gave credit. It’s been neat, emotional, reliving memories and comebacks. I had forgotten or didn’t known some of the pranks I wrote about, like Adrian Dantley being fined 30 pieces of silver. It’s a funny story.”

The book tells stories of “the shot,” which Stockton relived 20 years later (but “he only got off his tippy toes” this time around) to point guard Mo Williams posting on social media about Big Al Jefferson’s 10-foot-by12-foot bed, which “nobody wanted to move so it sold with the house” when Jefferson left.

Other stories and chapters got cut, Genessy said as he wrote 110,000 words when the book editor requested only 60,000 to 70,000. Fortunately, his favorite chapter, “Stockton’s shorts,” remained.

“I love how that was laid out in the book,” he said. “I wrote ‘In honor of John Stockton’s trunks, the chapter will be short.

The end.’ And it ended the page. I also loved writing about the ‘City of Utah’; it cracked me up to relive it. I think the ‘Villains’ chapter was fun to write and entertaining to read.”

Genessy said covering the Jazz, he had to “be fair, not a fan,” writing about “good performances and when they struggle.” He also had to learn to read the players and coaches.

At one point in the book, he wrote he received a stern response by Sloan when he questioned Carlos Boozer’s struggling game.

“Sloan defends his players, and if outsiders question and give too much grief, they can feel his reproach,” Genessy said. “One time I talked to him and asked, ‘Have you considered toying with the lineup?’ He said, ‘I don’t toy with anything.’ It was a poor choice of my words, and I got a stern look from Jerry. You don’t want to be on the end of it.”

Genessy wrote about the Jazz at times he wasn’t on the beat, interviewing others to gain perspective. One such occasion was to address the 1992 playoffs that got delayed against the Los Angeles Clippers after the Rodney King trial verdict was announced and the team found itself escorted to practice facilities for their safety.

Genessy also missed covering the Jazz during Frank Layden’s reign, but he asked him to write the forward to his book.

from the early days until now. He’s the ambassador for the Jazz, being the funny guy and able to put everything into perspective.

He’s still very much admired.”

On the beat, he said he had to adjust to the players as he interviewed them.

“Deron Williams always wore his emotions on his sleeve, so if he had a bad day, he didn’t want to talk,” he said. “Alec Burks always gave short answers. He didn’t want to be interviewed, so the interview would be done in one minute. Mehmet Okur always gave four responses (because of the Turkish to English language barrier), but over the years, his English got better.”

On the upside, Genessy said many players were great to interview, and Earl Watson was especially fun and gregarious. Every interview he had with current coach Quin Snyder, Genessy felt he “got smarter about basketball. He is a good teacher, brilliant.”

Genessy also appreciated Gordon Hayward’s dad driving him around Indianapolis one day, giving him insight about his son,

which was revealed in the book addressing their “van talk.”

“I could see how he tried to help and their relationship — the love and support of each other,” he said. “He opened the door into their lives and gave light to the up and coming player. It made a great story.”

Genessy tried to put the chapters in priority order and consulted others before naming his first chapter, “Stockton to Malone.”

“I talked to (Deseret News columnist) Lee Benson who said Larry H. Miller would be his No. 1 chapter,” he said about one of the sports writers he admires along with Deseret News writers Brad Rock and Doug Robinson. “Without Larry Miller, there probably would be no Utah Jazz. But for 20 years, the Jazz were ‘Stockton to Malone,’ and in a lot people’s minds, they still are. They’re the foundation; they have the statues, the streets on the map.”

Decades later, Genessy now sees current teammates Donovan Mitchell and Rudy Gobert, which he nicknamed the Stifle Tower, as what may become “the next generation of ‘Stockton to Malone.’”

While writing the book may be Genessy’s “final chapter” in writing about the Jazz, it isn’t of his support for the team. Now Genessy, who has more flexibility in his current Deseret News assignment, may be watching the season on the sidelines with his four children.

“We invest our heart and soul in teams; we want the championship,” he said. “We follow the sport, fall in love with the people, fantasize our role on the team, yell, be supportive, wear the gear.” l

Santa visits all thanks to Granite Education Foundation’s Santa Sack tradition

ne of Santa’s workshops, located in Millcreek City, has moved into full operation. Santa allowed the media a peek on Dec. 3.

The operation, sponsored by the Granite Education Foundation, is called the Santa Sack program. The program was started in 2009 when a group of women saw how many children didn’t get gifts for the holidays and decided to do something about it. In its first year, they helped 200 students. Now in the ninth year, they expect to help over 4,000 students.

“The holiday season is very overwhelming for the lowest income families in our district struggling week to week just to meet their family’s basic needs,” said Brent Severe, CEO of Granite Education Foundation.

“Their children are writing lists to Santa and listening to their friends talk at school about all the gifts under their tree, but often there’s no room in the meager family budget to meet the basic needs let alone the funds to buy presents.”

According to the foundation’s press release, “In a district where 65% of the 64,000 students live at or below the poverty line, gifts for the holidays just aren’t an option.”

It is a yearlong effort as “elves” (volunteers and others) buy toys, school supplies,

outerwear, hygiene items, socks and books.

They buy the items when they are on sale.

“We make every dollar count,” Severe said.

They also have a long list of donors, including Discover and the University Federal Credit Union, who are major sponsors.

Sacks are created for preschool through 12th grade, which makes this effort unique.

“We have so many homeless high school students in the Granite District. In their sacks, we include a sleeping bag, a blanket and something fun like ear buds,” Severe said.

“We have found that while teenage boys are good at picking, they aren’t so good at sacking. We need to do it,” a long-time grandma elf explained.

The items are sacked and a ribbon tied around the top. The sacks are stacked for the social worker.

The social worker picks up the sacks and distributes them to parents. Severe explained that often the parents will break up the sack.

The toy will be from Santa while the other items will be wrapped for Christmas Day. This allows children to experience the thrill of ripping off wrapping paper.

“Every child deserves a toy. Often children in lower-income families already have a stigma attached to them. By providing Santa Sacks to them, they are now equal with their peers, and they can say that Santa did visit them,” Severe said.

THE PROCESS

Social workers in schools identify students in need and submit their names. Granite Education Foundation volunteers sort the requests into age appropriate groups.

Starting in early November until school holiday break, volunteers from youth groups, businesses, and the community at large come to the distribution center. They grab a box and a tag. The tag is either green for boys or red for girls and is marked by grade.

First comes socks and a stocking cap with gloves. Hygiene supplies are added to the box. The elves take a turn to grab a blanket. They progress to the proper room for school supplies and a book. They return to the big area for an age-appropriate toy and

Local runner turns childhood illness into fitness motivation

By Jess Nielsen Beach | j.beach@mycityjournals.com You see them every time you drive down the street: runners, of all shapes and sizes, pounding the pavement in snow or shine. For Jill Wilkins, a West Valley resident, you’re more likely to see her at a more elevated level.

Rather than let her illness defeat her, she used it as a way to better herself.

“I always loved the strength of runners. You’ll be driving and see people running in bad weather and think, ‘wow, good for you!’ I wanted to be the strong one, beWilkins, 39, grew to love trail running cause I’ve always been the sick one.”

Although the fitness guru now has after a prolonged childhood illness.

“I was really sick my whole life,” Wilkins years of training under her belt, it didn’t said. “I missed four years of school. I had come easy. Her first 5K was with her uncle, to have daily nutritional IVs and I was very who was nearing his fifties. Her only goal was to not let him beat her—which he did, unhealthy. I was always ‘the sick one.’”

sooner than she expected.

“We started running and an eighth of a mile in, not even a half mile, my uncle takes off,” Wilkins said. “There’s nothing more humbling than seeing your older uncle take off and there’s nothing you can do about it.”

After finishing that race, Wilkins was determined to get better. She began to train and love the workout, and she wasn’t about to pay for a sitter.

“It’s so simplistic.” Wilkins said, explaining her routine as a mom who loves to run. “You don’t need a babysitter for the gym, you’re not stuck in a room with sweaty, smelly people not knowing what to do and being intimidated. You just put one foot in front of the other.”

Once her love of exercise was cemented, Wilkins began to explore the nearby mountains.

“I’ve always loved hiking and running, and then I found trail running, which just combines it all.”

In addition to the scenic views and fresh air, Wilkins is grateful for the easier toll trail running takes. Rather than the flat, monotonous pavement on roads and sidewalks, the dirt and snow serve as a cushion to not wear down as much.

“I like the mountain running because it’s very hard to do, but it’s much easier on your body. It’s less impact. There’s also trail variances, there’s rocks, roots, ups, downs; you’re using all the parts of your legs and all different tendons.”

If you’re looking to start trail running, or running in general, don’t be scared. According to Wilkins, there is one important factor if you decide to embrace the great outdoors, even in the snow.

“Running is not for everybody, but hiking is for almost everybody. You can get enjoyment out of it and you don’t have to do hard hikes. It’s putting one foot in front of the other. If you have to take a breather, do it. Get yourself out and enjoy the moun-

tains. We are so lucky. There are so many people who pay to travel here and experience our trails, and they’re right here.”

As for fellow moms with young children, she adds, “Most people think it’s complicated to get kids out, but it’s really not. It’s no different than going sledding or seeing the lights at Temple Square. Warm clothes, snacks if they’re hungry, and hand warmers.”

If you’re ready to get out there, Wilkins recommends checking online for avalanche dangers as well as consulting the app, All Trails.

“All Trails will filter hikes, show the distance, elevation gain, etc. That way you can see oh, this will be an easy trail verses something more challenging.” Wilkins said.

Winter sports for the non-skier: Wasatch Front offers plenty of alternatives for outdoor fun

The ski season got off to a solid start in Utah with a late November storm piling over 3 feet at many resorts as they opened. That should come as great news for skiers, but what about Utah’s non-skiers? Do they wait until spring and summer for warm weather outdoor activities?

“Snowshoes are good,” said Alan Greenberg at Cottonwood Cyclery in Cottonwood Heights. “They’re low cost, it’s fun, it’s something to do outside. You don’t have to wait in line, the trails are free.”

While the number of snowshoe rentals is fairly low from his experience, Dailey said he rents snowshoes to couples looking for something different to do on a date, or to older customers seeking low-impact snow sports. “It still gets you in the mountains, you still get to see cool stuff, and you’re not fighting the crowds,” Dailey said. “In the summer, you have all those hiking trails available. In the winter there are way less crowds.”

While that certainly is an option, there are a lot of other things Utah’s outdoors offer. From hitting the trails on snowshoes or darting downhill on a sled at the neighborhood park, getting outside this winter is easy thanks to the Wasatch Front’s accessible outdoor wonders.

Getting outdoors on a (snow)shoestring budget

Snowshoeing presents a low impact and relatively low-cost alternative to skiing. People can enjoy the crisp, clean air of the mountains at a fraction of the cost of skiing. Snowshoes help people access nearby trails without the same crowds they might encounter during summer. It is increasing in popularity, too. According to statistics, 3.7 million people snowshoed in the United States in 2017, up from 2.4 million in 2007.

“It’s a great alternative,” said Mike Dailey at the Wasatch Powder House in Holladay. “I’ll send people to Millcreek Canyon because you don’t have all the ski traffic.

There are a lot of trails up there. You can also go to the quarry in Little Cottonwood.”

Ice skating presents a timeless way to enjoy winter sports. From the indoor rink at the Cottonwood Heights Recreation Center to the Olympic Oval in Kearns or outdoor rinks when they can be found, skating helps bring people together.

Greenberg of Cottonwood Cyclery is passionate about skating and has visions of expanding access to ice skating in Cottonwood Heights. “It’s easy in the summer to make excuses to go outside and do something, but in the winter, it’s really hard,” Greenberg said. “My son plays hockey and

goes to Hillcrest. If there’s an outdoor rink, he would skate there. He might meet some Brighton kids. Something like that brings a community together. That’s important.”

With sparks flying as he sharpened a customer’s skate in his shop, Greenberg talked about his vision for an outdoor ice skating rink as the centerpiece of a winter haven in Cottonwood Heights. Put it near a sledding hill, add food trucks and outdoor concerts, and the whole community could take part in winter sports right in town.

“Any ice sport is a hidden sport,” Greenberg said. “It’s tucked away in a rink.

You really have to seek it out. You’re never going to stumble upon it. In the Midwest and the Northeast, where they have that stuff, you have communities that run into each other, and it’s out there. Who knows how many kids would see a rink and say, ‘Mom I want to play hockey or I want to figure skate.’”

For those who do skate, Cottonwood Cyclery sells, repairs, and sharpens skates for hundreds of people in the area. “I’d love to have an opportunity down here, right in the middle, where people driving by look and say, let’s buy a couple of cheap hockey sticks and we’ll go dink around on the ice,” Greenberg said.

The large, wide tires on a fat bike are great for riding over loose terrain like snow.

They tend to require a larger frame, particularly the fork, than most mountain bikes can accommodate. Fat bike enthusiasts find uses for them year round. “Some people are all about the fat biking,” Ricketts said. “They can definitely be a year-round bike. The traction, and the tires since they are so big, you can run them at a lower PSI. Since they’re so high volume they can act like suspension, if you will.”

In the summer, fat bikes are popular for bikepacking, which is essentially backpacking by bike. The fat tires are great for rough trails and work as well in desert sand as on the winter snow. Fat biking also offers a winter alternative to skiing when the snow might not be so great.

One limitation of winter fat biking is finding suitable trails. “Trails need to be maintained,” Greenberg said. “You can’t just fat bike on loose snow.”

Traditional winter fun right in town

Classic winter activities never go out of style. Go to a park like Mountview Park in Cottonwood Heights or Aspen Meadows Park in Sandy after a snowstorm, and you will find plenty of people sledding the steepest hills. Sledding is a low-cost activity that families can enjoy close to home.

“We’re here just to have fun with the family,” Monica Smith said as she watched her kids race down the hill at Aspen Meadows Park. “We’ll try to ski half a dozen times this year, but we probably sled more.”

People of all ages dart down snowy hills each winter, but sledding definitely seems to be about kids. It is a way for families to make the most of newly fallen snow and get outside during the winter months.

“I don’t ski; this is it,” said Levi Ortega.

“It’s all about my kids. There’s no skiing or snowboarding for me. We just sled.”

Inexpensive sleds of various designs, from plastic or foam to inflatable tubes,

are widely available in stores. More elaborate sleds are also an option. “A wooden toboggan? I can get them,” Greenberg of Cottonwood Cyclery said. “Think what a killer Christmas gift that would be. It would be really cool to have.”

A fun icebreaker

Another traditional summer activity that can be enjoyed in winter is fishing.

Utah offers several good ice fishing spots less than an hour from the Salt Lake valley.

“Rockport (State Park) is a great place,” said Karson Ranck of Fish Tech in Holladay. “It has some nice perch and rainbow trout. And it’s just 30 minutes away. There’s Jordanelle (State Park), and Strawberry (Reservoir) is really popular.”

The main obstacle to ice fishing, aside from getting over the idea of sitting in the cold for hours waiting for a bite, is getting through the ice. To do the job, people can opt for an old-fashioned manual auger or a powered one to drill a hole for their lines.

Manual augers run around $70 at Fish Tech, while powered augers can cost $600.

Ice fishing is another way to enjoy recreation areas without the crowds. There are multiple online resources to check on temperatures and ice conditions before venturing out. Making sure the ice is suitably thick for fishing is, of course, a key safety measure.

It is also a good idea to research specific locations on the lake before drilling holes. Since finding a place to fish takes a lot more work when you have to auger a hole, it helps to make a plan of action ahead of time.

Do you have what it takes to be a professional hockey ref?

By Shaun Delliskave | s.delliskave@mycityjournals.com Did you hear about the professional hockey game where not one fight broke out? If you did, please let Jim McKenna know, because he probably would have loved to referee that game.

Hockey, after all, is the only sport with a penalty box (a temporary detention cell) and requires its referees to match the toughness of its competitors.

McKenna, while dodging hockey pucks and punches during the night, works during the day in the information technology world as an I.T. solution manager for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, a profession he has had for the last 20 years. On top of all of that, he serves in the bishopric of his Murray congregation.

“I started officiating when I was 24.

I was married and going to school and needed a way to make some extra money,” McKenna said. “I was always hard on the refs when I played, always thought they did a poor job. One of them told me to give it a try if I thought I could do better.”

The Skyline High graduate grew up playing hockey; he started at age 6. When the ice rink was not available, he and his brothers played street hockey. After graduating from the University of Utah, he continued playing hockey in recreation leagues and decided he could, indeed, do a better

job than other referees could.

“I learned very quickly; it is a lot harder than it looks. But, I loved being involved, and it was a great way to make extra money. Later on, I kept doing it because I loved working in high-level games. I have also come to meet and get to know a lot of great people,” McKenna said.

To be a professional hockey referee, you go through a process similar to the players. First, you are selected to work in developmental leagues and junior leagues, such as the USHL or NAHL. Referees are then hired to work minor professional hockey, such as the East Coast Hockey League and American Hockey League; then the National Hockey League hires the top refs of those leagues. McKenna officiates many of the Utah Grizzlies games and minor league teams in Idaho.

According to McKenna, “I was older when I started working, and so I never had the desire to move my wife to the Midwest or back East to work hockey games. Most of the refs spend several years traveling around working games to get a shot at the pro level. I was happy and lucky enough to get to work here in Utah.”

McKenna typically draws the linesman assignment, meaning his primary responsibility is watching for violations involving the

center line and the blue line, and infractions including icing and offsides, after which the linesman conduct face-offs. McKenna is also expected to break up scuffles, fistfights and other altercations that occur during the game.

His day job of working with computers and, if you will, his weekend job (working as a leader in his LDS ward) are, without question, vastly different.

“Dealing with players, no matter what the level of play—college, pro, or youth— you always have to be the adult and be in control, you can’t let your emotions get to you. I have found my faith and perspective helps me do that.

“Yes, hockey is probably one of the most colorful sports, language-wise. I have found that the older I get, the less I care about what I am being called or what the fans, coaches or players yell. I have found if I can find the humor in all the craziness, it helps.”

McKenna calls working the Salt Lake City 2002 Olympics Games the highlight of his career. He called many pre-Olympic matches and assisted the international referees with all the games.

“I worked as a linesman during the 2002 Paralympic Games. I lined the bronze medal game between Sweden and Cana-

da. That was a blast. I got to know a number of officials from other countries, and we had a great time during that week,” McKenna said. “I also got to watch every Olympic game, including the gold medal game between the USA and Canada, which was probably the best sports experience I have had.”

Parking in front of mailboxes now illegal

ere is an interesting fact: there is no federal, state or city law against parking a vehicle in front of a mailbox.

Until now.

As of Dec. 4, you cannot park a vehicle within 10 feet of a street side mailbox within the South Salt Lake city limits.

The 10-foot mark is on either side and the law is in effect between the hours of 7 a.m. and 7 p.m., Monday through Saturday.

The police will not be actively enforcing the law. However, the law now allows a resident to call about a vehicle that is blocking their mailbox.

The concern of the South Salt Lake City Council was that when a mailbox is blocked, the mail isn’t delivered, which means important deliveries like medicine could be missed.

Another obstacle of not getting mail is the weather. A search of USPS.gov did not uncover specific guidelines on how far snow must be moved back from a mailbox. The website did mention that carriers are instructed not to get out of their vehicles to deliver or collect mail in a street side mailbox. This is to avoid hazards such as slips and falls on an icy road.

The notice does mention that, “The approach to and exit from the mailbox should be cleared sufficiently on both sides to allow the carrier to drive ahead and not be required to back up after delivery.”

It is up to the mail carrier to suspend mail service if the approach to the mailbox is not safe. l

In fact, Liz has been to every swearing-in ceremony except for one because she was in New York at another officer’s funeral. She talks to every family. She is a rock,” Carruth said.

“It was the worst thing I have ever had to go through,” Mayor Cherie Wood said.

Wood was watching “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” at a local theater.

She stepped out to take a call because, “When Jack (Carruth) calls, you take the call.”

“He told me an officer had been hit by a car and would keep me posted,” Wood remembered.

She returned to the movie but doesn’t remember any of it. After the movie, she decided to go to IMC to offer support.

“There is no book for things like this,” Wood said.

IMC had moved Romrell to an empty wing of the hospital.

“I remember walking pass South Salt Lake officers standing at attention from the elevator to David’s room. It was then I realized the idea that police are a family is real,” Wood said.

When Romrell’s body, draped with an American flag passed those same officers, each saluted their fellow officer. From that time to his burial, two officers watched over his body.

While the police department handled funeral arrangements, Wood led the city and community response. City employees wore a blue and black ribbon. The following Sunday, a candlelight vigil was held at the Columbus Center.

“It was cold, but it gave people a chance to come together and give thanks to a person who made the ultimate sacrifice,” Wood said.

“I am also grateful for Jack. He fulfilled a unique role as he personally grieved and helped others do so,” Wood remarked.

When asked how he did that, Carruth became emotional.

“In my time in law enforcement, I have noticed there is always one person who is a rock. One person who helps the family grieve and keep them together. As I turned into the hall following David’s body and saw my officers lining the hall, I knew I had to be that rock,” Carruth replied.

Carruth wanted to make sure the family drove funeral arrangements, but they also expected about 3,000 officers to attend, which is another example of the Blue Family. Because of the cultural significance of the number 5, Liz decided to hold the funeral on Dec. 5.

Carruth told about an experience that really surprised him. He and other senior officers were having a meeting with the family. It was scheduled for two hours and specific funeral items were being discussed.

The meeting went longer than two hours.

Sometime before the incident, a swearing-in ceremony had been scheduled the same day.

With 10 minutes before the ceremony, Carruth excused himself assuming the meeting would continue.

“After greeting the family of the new officer, I looked up and saw Liz standing in the

On Nov. 24 of this year, city officials, officers from other agencies, family, friends and community representatives joined the SSLPD to dedicate the David P. Romrell Public Safety Building. The SSLPD police station was renamed in his honor.

Deputy Chief Dwayne F. Ruth conducted the program. He gave a brief history of the events a year earlier and explained how the community paid tribute by bathing the building in blue and creating a makeshift memorial around Romrell’s car.

Cody Cross spoke about the Utah Honor Flag and the significance of the 13 folds in the flag. The flag was by Romrell’s bust for the week after the dedication.

Jennifer Romrell Legerski, David’s sister, gave a life sketch. She talked about how he invented the skinny jeans and had a wonderful cheesy grin. She mentioned that he and Liz met at 19 and dated for three years. They broke it off. Soon, he realized that he needed to make some changes in his life including bulking up. With the guidance of mentors, he decided to join the Marines. While at boot camp, Liz and David exchanged letters. With 13 days between graduating from boot camp

and reporting for additional training, they rekindled their love and got married before he left in 2010.

Liz stayed here to finish school while Romrell was deployed numerous times. They finally were able to live together when he finished his enlistment. After joining the Marine Reserve, he felt like he needed to do more.

He enrolled in the police academy without being sponsored and became the president of his class. He joined the SSLPD 11 months before his death.

She ended by quoting George Jung, “May the wind always be at your back and the sun upon your face. And may the wings of destiny carry you aloft to dance with the stars.”

“David is with the stars,” Legerski concluded.

In true Liz Romrell fashion, the first statement she made was to offer her condolences to the SSLFD for the loss of Fire Marshall Russ Groves, who was buried the day earlier. She called them, “my fire family.”

She thanked Chief Carruth for his incredible support. In a humorous moment, she mentioned that she knew some of the ways the city was honoring Romrell, but it wasn’t until she got her invitation that she learned “they were naming the entire building after him.”

Because for the first four years of their married life together, they mostly communicated through emails and letters, Liz read a

give him a special mount for his body camera so it wouldn’t keep flying off! This determination is one of your many characteristics I know Jackson will radiate in the world.”

She concluded by saying, “I know that this year has been extremely difficult, but I want us to look to the future. I want us to make memories and go on adventures, as David would have wanted. In fact, last night I went on a little adventure of my own, to the liquor store! I bought David’s favorite liquor, Bulleit Bourbon. I have some to share!

During his remarks, Carruth mentioned that one of the memorable events during the funeral was pushups. He asked anyone to come and do pushups for Romrell. A few Marine buddies, fellow officers and Liz came forward.

Carruth talked about the history of the “End of Watch” car that was used in the July 4th parade and the “End of Watch” patch.

He also talked about how Romrell’s locker became a makeshift memorial by his fellow officers and now is a permanent memorial.

Wood spoke about two great qualities exhibited by Romrell and all officers. They are perseverence and true grit.

The ceremony concluded by raising the flag back to full staff.

The ceremony was followed by the ribbon cutting on the David P. Romrell Public Safety building. Liz and Romrell’s father cut the ribbon.

In addition to the city’s events, Romrell police station the David P. Romrell Public was honored during National Police Week Safety Building. Once again, we were united to ensure that David’s memory will live on in earlier this year.

5 New Year’s Habits You Should Keep

t’s the new year, a time where many people promise themselves, this year they will turn over a new leaf and bust their bad habits for good. For those that have accomplished this mission, good for you. For me, however a new year’s resolution is more of a holiday tradition of making, and then breaking, an already empty promise to myself.

I have found that if I really want to change a behavior, I need to turn the old habit into a new one. I try to make my new habits fun, challenge myself, compete with someone else and reward myself at the end.

In truth, I have most success doing this when it isn’t New Year’s. But, in keeping with the holiday and my mission to inspire others to save money here are five habits we penny pinchers use on a daily basis to keep a few more dollars in our pocket.

1. We prepare food from scratch. Preparing meals ahead, freezing extras and avoiding eating out will really stack up to extra savings. Not to mention the added health benefit. If you find you are eating out too often or most of your meals are prepackaged, just making this one change can add up to big bucks.

2. We shop second hand first. We make it a habit to check thrift stores, Restore and consignment stores before buying new. If we don’t find what we’re looking for we often choose to wait plus,

there’s the added benefit of keeping things from the landfills.

3. We fix it before we replace them. When something breaks, we don’t throw it away immediately. We assess and research whether the item can be repaired to extend its lifespan. We are also inclined to do it ourselves as opposed to hiring things out.

4. We give our kids less stuff. Frugal kids don’t have a lot of toys. We as parents expect our kids to learn to be creative with less. We pass on buying the trendy clothing for our kids and teach them at an early age to earn, manage and respect their own money.

5. We take advantage of community events. Utah has an amazing amount of

The list of things that a frugal person does on a day to day basis to save a few dollars is endless and varies greatly from person to person. We tend to turn saving money into a game instead of paying attention to every detail we challenge ourselves to reach our financial goals faster and reaching a goal like paying off the house, paying cash for a car, or taking a dream vacation, makes for a Happy New Year.

nless you’ve been living in the Gobi Desert, hiding from the toxic political atmosphere, you’re well aware that Bravo will air the “Real Housewives of Salt Lake City” in 2020. As if 2020 wasn’t going to be terrible enough.

If you’re not familiar with the intellectual and thought-provoking series, executive producer Andy Cohen flies to town in his invisible helicopter, rounds up glamourous white women, tells them to act like idiots, then throws a diamond necklace into a swimming pool to watch them jump in wearing slinky evening gowns.

It started in 2006 with “The Real Housewives of Orange County” and then spread like the plague through New York, Atlanta, Beverly Hills and other unsuspecting cities. In any given episode, you can expect nanny drama, coiffed eyebrows, white woman problems, plastic surgery cleavage, mean gossip, pouty lips, cats, jewelry for cats, catty behavior and lots of big hair.

Buy why Utah? Well, the series tends to be overwhelmingly white, so I guess Utah makes sense. And I’ve heard that some women in Utah live glamourous lives in upper-class communities. That rules me out. My glamourous life consists of digging through laundry for a pair of matching socks.

What I want to see is “The REAL Real Housewives of Salt Lake City.”
