FREE NEWLY ELECTED CITY COUNCIL MAKES HISTORY WITH ITS DIVERSITY

T

he 2020-2021 South Salt Lake City Council is making history. The first person of color is on the council and for the first time the super majority of the council, that is five members, are women.

Pinkney, 26, has lived in South Salt Lake City for over a year. She earned a bachelor of psychology from Marquette University and a master of education leadership and policy from the University of Utah. She works as a campus and corporate recruiter.

Pinkney’s campaign slogan was to “Move Forward Together.” When asked how she was going to fulfill that promise, Pinkney said, “I plan to fulfill this theme by first proposing initiatives, resolutions, and ordinances that increase transparency and collaboration of city residents such as a participatory budget and neighborhood councils. I also plan to keep my engagement with the community by being active in neighborhoods and fulfilling the wants and needs of residents. Moving forward together means listening to residents and doing what they want and need above all else.”

ise program on their equity and diversity goals; and create more ways for residents and leaders to get involved in the city.

Since Pinkney is a groundbreaker being the first person of color on the City Council, the City Journals asked her what that means to her.

“I am so grateful and honored to be the first person of

color and first Black woman on the council. We have so much diversity in our city and having representation that reflects, that is a huge first step. For me this is about serving my community and making sure we are having important conversations that include everyone and makes everyone feel included in the city,” she said.

Huff moved to South Salt Lake City five years ago. She graduated from the University of Utah with a master of education. She is also a licensed mental health counselor.

She works as a program administrator for the State of Utah, collaborating with local and state partners to implement best practice in mental health crisis services.

When asked how she was going to fulfill campaign promises, Huff replied, “As a city council member, I made a promise to listen to all sides of an issue and I do my due diligence before I vote.”

Huff has been serving on the planning commission and cited it as good preparation for her service on the city council.

“Serving on the planning commission provided me with a foundation of the current and future development in the city. My experience on the planning commission has given me a better understanding of the need to update our city codes to ensure our city gets the quality developments that will benefit our

community,” Huff said.

Huff’s main issue is “to work on resolving the budget concerns facing South Salt Lake.”

She continued, “I attended last year’s budget meetings, and I am aware of the current challenges our city faces. I am dedicated to working with city staff and fellow council members to find sustainable solutions to solve our city’s budget issues.”

Mila is returning to the council to represent District 4 and has three main areas of concern.

“I have three main areas of focus this year. My No. 1 priority is to make sure we retain and compensate our public safety employees adequately with a sustainable funding source. Second is making sure our Homeless Resource Center (HRC) is successful, providing a pathway to independence and housing without being a drain on our city resources. Finally, I’ll continue to work with staff and Salt Lake County to ensure that our

No idling in South Salt Lake. It’s the law

A

common event during winter, which also happens at other times too, is an inversion.

We hack our way through it until a storm comes to blow out the polluted air. Typically, cold air is on top of warm air. However, at times, like after a snowstorm, cold air is below warm air.

It is inverted. When an inversion occurs, the warm air traps the cold air in the valleys. Each day of the inversion increases the levels of fine particulate pollution.

Fine particulate pollution or PM2.5 refers to atmospheric particulate matter (PM) that have a diameter of less than 2.5 micrometers. These PMs are so small they are 30 times

smaller than a human hair.

When measuring air pollution, bigger is not better because these fine particulates are small and they are able to travel deeper into the lungs.

“While larger PM10 particulates can compromise respiratory and cardiac health, smaller particulate matter (PM2.5) poses the greatest risk because it can penetrate deeply into the lungs where it can cause inflammation and damage to the lung tissue,” according to the Utah Department of Environmental Quality (UDEQ).

You were just in a car acident, now what?

Unless you’re one of the few anomalies in the world, we’ve all been in an accident. We’ve experienced that sickening feeling when your car makes unwanted contact with another vehicle.

We’re frustrated and disheartened.

While we may want to crawl into a hole, we can’t. There are things to do and we’ve given you 10 to be aware of (in no particular order).

1.Have an emergency kit in your car.

While this step comes before the accident occurs, it’s essential to be prepared.

Whatever you kit entails, make sure it has a first-aid kit, flashlight, reflective triangles and a small (and simple) camera in case there’s been damage to your phone. We’re typically frustrated or frazzled after an accident and not inclined to rational thinking. Being prepared limits the possibility of forgetfulness.

2.Take a deep breath. Accidents are traumatic experiences. Taking a breath will shift focus from what just happened to what needs to be done next.

3.Get a status check on everyone in the car. Check with each passenger to see if they are OK. Have someone call

911 immediately if someone is injured or unresponsive.

4.Move to a safe location. Most insurance companies recommend relocating the vehicle to the sidewalk or shoulder of the road as soon as possible after the accident. If the damage to the car is minor, this should be relatively easy. But if there are major injuries or questions about the safety of the car, leave it where it is, even if its blocking traffic.

5.Increase your visibility. Turn on your hazard lights and set out your attention items from the emergency kit—flares, orange cones, reflective triangles, etc.

One accident should not lead to another. Take precaution to ensure other drivers on the road remain safe.

6.Stay calm. It is very easy to lose your temper in this situation, it’s human nature. Keeping your cool will keep the situation from getting worse. If it wasn’t your fault, it’s easy to want to let your emotions loose on the other driver. This will cloud your judgment and may lead to something that does not help the situation. You still need to exchange information.

ESL Center: Connecting communities through language education

T

he English Skills Learning Center (ESL Center) is as relevant today as it was when it was founded in 1988 as the Literacy Volunteers of America-Wasatch Front (LVAWF). Back then, their goal was to provide basic adult reading skills and English as a second language classes. Now, they offer skill-based classes across the Salt Lake valley. They changed their name in 2003 to reflect this broader mission.

“Part of our vision is to help all community members feel empowered, secure, and reach their self-sufficiency.... We often use the tagline ‘Connecting communities through language education,’” Katie Donoviel, the associate director of the ESL Center, said.

“We work with people who are just starting their language learning journey. Many of our students haven’t had access to formal education in their home countries, so this is their first experience learning English in a school setting,” Donoviel said.

They offer citizenship classes, empowering parents classes, life skills classes, and work training classes. All of their classes contain literacy skills because as refugees can communicate better, they are able to get better employment and make connections with the greater community.

“This is what makes us stand out compared to other organizations, we build our curriculum in-house. We have knowledgeable professionals building the classes,” Shareen Kayyali, the marketing and training direction at the ESL Center, said.

All their classes are free and are taught in 31 locations including schools, libraries, community centers, apartment buildings and workplaces. A common barrier for refugees is transportation and time. The focus is to bring classes to the participants rather than bring the participants to the class. Often refugees work non-traditional hours and often classes are taught early in the day or later in the evening to allow attendance.

They are partnering with organizations like Promise South Salt Lake, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Welfare Services, Catholic Community Services of Utah, Granite School District, Lowell Bennion Community Service Center, Refugee & Immigrant Center-Asian Association of Utah, and many others.

They serve over 1,000 adults from more than 45 countries. They use more than 150 trained ESL teachers and are always looking for more. Volunteers receive 18 hours of training and are assigned a mentor. They need to commit for six months and complete at least 100 hours. For volunteer information, go to ESLcenter.org.

Graduates of the ESL Center citizenship classes have a 98% pass rate, which is a good thing since it cost $640 to $725 to apply and take the English and civic tests. The Application for Naturalization (Form N-400) is a 20-

page form with 18 parts. The course is built around this form and the English and civic tests.

A United States Citizenship and Immigration Service (USCIS) officer assesses an applicant’s ability to read and write English by having the applicant write correctly one of three sentences and read out loud one of three sentences. The applicants English speaking ability is assessed throughout the interview process.

An oral civic/history exam is given. Up to 10 questions of a possible 100 questions are asked. An applicant must answer six of the 10 correctly to pass.

One of the citizenship classes is taught

by Paul Wichelson at the Utah Refugee Education and Training Center (250 W. 3900 South). Wichelson earned a Ph.D. in American Studies. After teaching at the University of Utah for a while, he became a stay-athome dad.

“I looked for opportunities to give back to the community,” Wichelson said. He mentioned the reason he selected this volunteer opportunity is “because I wanted to be part of the conversation of the political discussion of who belongs.”

In one of his classes, he discussed the U.S. political system and the right to vote.

Students learned how political parties work, how individuals are elected, and how voting rights were extended to various disenfranchised groups via constitution amendments 15, 19, 24, and 26.

“This is the reason why we are here. We want to have a voice,” Dinora Garcia, an emigrant of 19 years from El Salvador, shared with the class.

There’s an English level I class taught at the Deseret Industries in Sugar House by Christina Balls and Heather Oswald. They have been teaching for two years.

“When I heard President Uchtdorf’s [of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints] talk on refugees years ago, I knew I had to do something,” Balls said. She brought along her friend, Oswald.

When each student arrives, there are hugs and throughout the class students helped each other even though they are from different countries and speak different languages.

The instructors pointed out a student and said, “Two years ago, he never looked up. He was very quiet with little interaction. Now he laughs and is involved in the class because his English skills have improved.”

Even though the instructors spend four hours once a week, the students come every day with different instructors. This instruction is part of their training program at Deseret Industries.

The students worked on recognizing letters (upper and lower case), speaking short words and phrases, writing letters and words, and learning how to tell time.

The instructors use repetition and classroom games. Balls was helping a student count with noodles and the student’s face lit up when she realized she was getting it.

“A lot of our classes are open enrollment. So, students can jump in anytime and that is important for adult education because they have busy lives like we do. So, our curriculum is built kind of circular. It will go

through a couple of units and then cycle back for a review or new instruction for a new participant,” Donoviel explained.

Granite Park Junior High continues to serve community with dinner and more

I

n their continuing effort to be a community-oriented school, Granite Park Junior High School (GPJHS) held their third annual Dinner at the Park on Dec. 21. This was a way to bring teachers, students and their families together at the beginning of the holiday recess.

This year the event was planned and sponsored by a nonprofit called the Best Seat in the House. Besides a dinner provided

by Papito Moe’s, a local Puerto Rican food truck, there was a magic show, a visit with Santa, and a clothing giveaway, including new winter coats in child to adult sizes.

“Teachers are not required to be here, but they come,” said Aaron Wilson, GPJHS principal.

Wilson continued, “Students mean a lot to us on a very human level. When we say we care about you, we really mean it.”

They were expecting about 400 attendees.

“We don’t get out much. This gives us an opportunity to see different cultures and to meet people,” said Thao Truong, a refugee from Vietnam, while enjoying the dinner.

“We come with the kids to enjoy Christmas and to say ‘Hi,’” Amjed Aldahalk, who emigrated from Iraq four years ago, said after dinner.

visit with Santa. After doing so, they were given one wrapped gift and were also able to choose one unwrapped toy.

After making his choice, one student asked for a gift for his baby sister.

The toys were a result of corporate giving arranged by the Best Seat in the House.

Internationally recognized, but local magician Jason Fun (his real name) performed for the families. He started doing magic when he was 10.

“My father taught me my first magic trick,” Fun said.

According to his website (JasonFunMagic.com), he has performed on three different continents, and has appeared on local TV several times, including Fox 13 with Big Budah, Good Day Utah, and KSL’s Studio 5 with Brooke Walker.

Along with his assistant and wife, Marcela, they created and run the Utah Valley Magic Academy. The magic classes are for children 8-12. The magic is mixed with the development of social, communication and physical skills.

Ivan Gonzalez created the Best in the House nonprofit in 2018 after working at nonprofits such as the Ronald McDonald House and Utah Youth Village in Salt Lake City.

because so many people helped me,” Gonzalez said as he reflected on his childhood.

Gonzalez grew up in poverty, so he understands what it means to be a low-income kid. He also knows the impact adult mentors can have.

In 2019, the nonprofit helped 3,000 kids in the Salt Lake area and helped children in foster care, with intellectual disabilities, who are critically ill or have life-altering conditions, who are refugees, or live in low-income or disadvantaged families.

The name, Best Seat in the House, is a result of two reoccurring experiences. The first is that as Gonzalez sees these children distracted from their daily struggles, he says, “I have the best seat in the house.”

The other experience is when parents see their kid, who is suffering, being a regular kid even for a short time. “They have the best seat in the house,” Gonzalez said.

According to their website, “We want all children to have a rich, fun, and rewarding childhood.” To that end, the nonprofit provides tickets to concerts, sporting events, festivals, and other events in the area; provides themed events for kids; purchases sports or activity supplies; arranges “meet and greet” events with musicians and celebrities; and provides or pays for lessons and extracurricular activities.

New Granite Library plans groundbreaking in spring

he new Salt Lake County Granite Library has completed its last step before issuing building permits with the Design Review approval by the Planning Commission on Dec. 5, 2019. The approval includes 18 conditions with nine sub conditions.

“This is really exciting for the city,” Commission Chair Laura Vernon said.

Alex White, Community Development Director, explained the property is still owned by the Granite School District. They are still working on the sell contract with Wasatch Group. Once that is complete, Wasatch Group will sell the a section of the property along the west side, about five acres, to the county.

“We have been working on this project for over a year, and we hit some bumps along the way. I say that only to say that over the last four or five months working with the city, especially Alex and her staff things have been going very well,” Rob Beishline, an architect from Method Studio, commented.

The design is like earlier plans but with a few tweaks.

500 East ash trees

After five arborist studies, the architects believe that most of the ash trees along 500 East can be rehabilitated and remain. There are 11 trees along the property and two will need to be removed. Tree 1 is at the intersection and tree 11 is at the end of the property. Tree 1 needs to be removed because of sight view from the corner and tree 11 needs to be removed because of the entrance into the library.

The remaining trees need to be pruned and fertilized and watered. The architect is requiring contractors to protect the trees during construction.

The five trees along 3300 South are a different story. Since they are of different species and no obvious intent in design, the planning commission voted to remove them. The other choice is to have the sidewalk meander around the trees which is problematic. This also will allow the Mill Creek trail along 3300 South to be straight.

Trees are planned throughout the property, including a grove of flowering crab apple trees.

This a nod to having an orchard like a farmer, the old Granite High School mascot.

Inside and out, the architects have played homage to the old Granite High School.

Inside, the GHS seal was moved from being on the ground to a wall. Making sure no one walks on the seal, which is a GHS tradition.

Old photographs will be used as wall coverings.

On the exterior, the walls will be red matching the red brick of GHS. The granite rock will be located by the main entrance and building will have a gateway look toward the intersection of 3300 South and 500 East.

Amenities

This site is a unique place for a Salt Lake County library because of 2.74 acres of open space around the library, which is 56% of the property.

Outdoor, there will be a fitness trail circling the property. On the site there will be a plaza, public art, a great lawn running from the intersection to the main entrance, an amphitheater, a playground and a dedicated gathering place (think food trucks).

Inside is a large child section including space for active play, story time and media collections. For teens, there will be places for study, play and socializing. There will be technology and create spaces, too, along with meeting rooms and social areas.

CPTED

The concept of Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) was a key focus throughout the design. The design was reviewed by four city departments: SSL Police, Urban Design, Engineering, and Community Development to make sure CPTED principles were followed.

For example, all exterior plugs will be on a timer and only have power during library or event times. The library’s Wi-Fi will only work during library hours. All flat blank walls will have an anti-graffiti finish, including the waste container enclosure. Shrubs will be trimmed at a low levels and tree branches will be trimmed at least 6 feet above the ground. All exterior furniture like benches will be designed to prevent using them as a sleeping surface.

All this and other items are done to make the library and the grounds safe. It also will allow police to see the property from the street.

Open play basketball helps keep community together

A

s people gather into the gym at the Columbus Center, it is all greetings and jokes. It’s not long until someone grabs a basketball and starts warming up.

As participants start running and shooting hoops, Mark Montoya gets them organized and ready to play.

Montoya, who is fondly known around the gym as “Marky,” has helped keep the adult open play basketball going for over 10 years.

Montoya explained that there used to be no fee for the open gym adult basketball.

“But they were having a hard time finding someone to run the thing, so that’s when I got on the payroll,” he said. “I told them I’d do it for free, but it makes sense, they gotta pay to keep the lights on.”

The fee for the two hours of basketball is a mere $1 now, which is an inexpensive way to get out of the house and exercise.

vantage of this program is Andy Iujan. “I come once or twice a week with family,” he said. The family that night consisted of his son, two cousins and a nephew. “It’s good to get out and play while I still can.”

“Marky got all of us in the neighborhood out here playing,” Iujan said. “We all played softball together, Marky has been here coaching for years, since I was a kid.”

Montoya lives in the South Salt Lake neighborhood and has been a staple in the community, which is apparent when talking with him — he knows everyone by name, and for those he doesn’t, he makes sure to talk to.

As one participant runs over and slaps him on the shoulder, he says, “Sorry I blew that for us guys, this is the first time I’ve played in 15 years.”

Montoya laughs and tells Will Richardson, “It’s all in fun, no worries man, we’re all here to have a good time.”

Iujan agreed. “This is friendly. That’s why I like to play, everyone has fun and if you get a shot take it, no one is mad about it.”

The play runs pickup style, picking teams of four or five players and running a full court game to 11.

Don’t know anyone? That’s OK, they keep it fair by adding in all new players, making sure no one has to sit out more than one

game at a time.

“I can never say too much good things about the people that run this parks and rec department, they do so much to keep this place going and we are all just so grateful for that,” Montoya said.

Montoya is passionate about his community center and talked about the award the Columbus Center received for their adult programs, which influences the grants received to help keep these programs running at a low cost.

As highly as Montoya speaks about the rec center, it appears community members see the same in Montoya.

“Marky brings us all together, I hope I can be here at his age doing the same thing,” Iujan said. l

hat started out as a couple of brothers looking for something to do together has turned into the largest locally owned tree company in Utah and a team with a mission to make the world a bit better.

Diamond Tree Experts owner Trent Van Dam has been caring for trees since he began working for his father when he was 12 years old.

Started in 1968 by Van Dam’s father, the company has now grown to around 70 employees working to “git’er done.”

“When we go work on a tree we’re not there to butcher or just remove whatever.

We’re there to beautify the tree and make it healthy and make it last longer and grow,” Van Dam said.

But it’s not only about the trees.

“There are a lot of tree companies out there that are a one-man show. A pickup truck, a ladder, a chainsaw, and they’re out for the money. Every business is out for money, but we care about aesthetics of the trees and the neighborhood,” Van Dam said.

“Most people think that it’s houses that make a neighborhood, but it’s actually the vegetation, the trees, the shrubs, the flow-

ers, that’s what makes a neighborhood,” Van Dam said.

Proper tree health still branches out to more than looks.

“We have certified arborists on our team, and when people do not take care of a tree, it will either break, split, tip over, or if a wind storm comes, it’ll just knock that tree over,” Van Dam said.

Last year, Diamond Tree Experts’ employee Elvin Serrano went out to enjoy a Salt Lake Bees game but as he walked into the game, his phone started to ring.

“I had just walked into the game and I got a call saying, ‘Are you at the stadium?’ and I said, ‘Yeah.’ (There was a storm that day.) ‘That storm just took out a tree and it landed on someone’s car.’”

The owner of the car was 20 feet away when the tree collapsed.

Serrano had to break the news that the trees scattered throughout the parking lot were dying and this was going to keep happening if they didn’t cut the trees down.

We want to do it safely, we want the people to be happy, and we want the tree to be healthy. We invest a lot in making sure that the work is done correctly.”

n the November 2019 edition of the City Journals, an article titled “Sparks Fly Again At SSL City Council Meeting Over Code Revision” was published. The article summarized the conflict between the city council and the city staff over a proposed reorganization of some code sections. This included repealing and replacing sections 5, 15, and 17 along with updating the zoning map and amending Chapters 3.11 and 9.24. The article spoke about the mistrust among some city council members with city staff and in turn the frustration city staff had with the city council. The result of that Oct. 9 meeting was to table the reorganization for a future time.

The future time came with a new city council. At the Jan. 8 South Salt Lake City Council meeting, the first of the new city council, the atmosphere was different. There weren’t verbal fights. There weren’t moments of awkward silence afterward. There was a feeling of cooperation and focus.

“Strain between the council and the administration is common in many municipalities. I’ve shared this similar frustration with many other elected officials at conferences and boards. However, I think it’ll get significantly better this year. It’s about trust.

Productive conflict is a good thing, but it can only be productive when you have trust,” Ray deWolfe, council member at-large, wrote.

At a working meeting on Jan. 8, the City Council selected Sharla Bynum to serve as Chairperson for the next two years.

“I am excited to serve as Council Chair this year, it will be my responsibility to ensure we have fair and civil discourse between all stakeholders. One focus will be on empowering staff and giving them the resources, they need to do their job. Our first meeting we unanimously gave advice and consent for Mayor (Cherie) Wood to appoint six department heads. Moving forward, these actions should translate into improved customer service for residents and business owners.

Though we will never be able to make everyone happy, we can certainly take time to explain the why. Better communication will make all the difference,” Bynum wrote.

Ray deWolfe was selected as Vice-Chairperson and made similar remarks on ensuring a fair hearing for all parties.

At the RDA meeting, Portia Mila was selected as Chairperson and LeAnne Huff was selected as Vice-Chairperson.

Mayoral appointments

Other action the council took in their first meeting was to give unanimous advice and consent for six department heads appointments by Wood. The term advice and consent means that the legislative body, in this case the city council, has the right to be consulted on and approved the appointments by the executive branch, in this case the mayor. It is a legal way to say approval.

“Some of these individuals have waited a long time for this day and some not as long.

But I do want to give a blanket statement. I am often asked why I continue to do this job and when I really think about it, it is because I get the opportunity every day to work with top caliber professionals who care about this community almost as much as I do,” Wood said in her opening remarks.

The six new department heads are: Hannah Vickery – City Attorney; Terry Addison – Fire Chief; Lisa Forrester – Court Administrator; Kelli Meranda – Promise South Salt Lake Director; Alexandra White – Community Development Director; and Antoinette Evans – Urban Livability Director.

“Sometimes we have barked at each other a couple of times and I know a few times, but I want to again express I have confidence in our department heads. The dedication you guys have is great and I do appreciate it,” Shane Siwik, reelected council member for District 5, said before the council moved on to other business. l

Cottonwood boys basketball riding balanced scoring play as it looks to stay competitive

ith former head coach Lance Gummersall off to new pastures at Herriman High School, Cottonwood ushered in a new era in December 2019.

In walked new head coach Marc Miller, who spent three years on the last staff under Gummersall, who had the Colts within a whisker of a berth in the state playoffs.

Miller has some big shoes to fill going into the 2020 season. But first, Cottonwood had to get through a tough slate of preseason

games in December 2019.

The Colts tipped off the preseason with a showdown against Kearns at the UVU TipOff Classic. Cottonwood hung tough with the rebuilding Cougars for four quarters but fell 44-37.

As the Colts continued their road trip to open the season, they traveled to Taylorsville. In another close battle, Cottonwood showed its mettle, hanging with the Warriors throughout but never overcoming a slow first

quarter start in a 47-43 loss.

Next up was a bus trip south, to the majestic red rock country of St. George. Cottonwood suffered its largest loss of the season thus far, a 59-44 decision to Pine View after keeping the game close for two quarters.

However, a short bus ride the next night against Snow Canyon on Dec. 13 turned into a seesaw battle that dragged into overtime before the home team prevailed over Cottonwood, 61-55.

At 0-4 overall and just before the holiday break, the Colts finally returned home on Dec. 17 to take on Bear River.

The Colts showed a few nerves in the first half, falling behind 23-14 to the visiting Bears, who even extended their lead to 13 through three quarters. Cottonwood fell in this one by the score of 55-39.

After the break, the Colts, who had already played four out of five games on the road, returned to the highways and byways for the Riverton Holiday Tournament.

In a four-day marathon starting on Dec. 26, Cottonwood took on perennial power Orem, losing 65-32 in a game that saw the Colts fall behind 33-10 at the half.

The next day saw the sun come up and saw Cottonwood fight, scratch and claw against Centennial (Las Vegas, Nevada) who prevailed throughout, though the Colts showed grit and didn’t let up in a 60-46 loss.

That determination proved to put Cottonwood over the top and into the win column Dec. 28 against Cedar Valley.

The Colts galloped out to a 14-9 after one quarter, holding a two-point advantage of 23-21 going into halftime. They would increase their lead to five through three quarters, however, Cedar Valley wouldn’t go away and used a big fourth quarter to send the game into overtime.

After Cedar Valley scored the first points in the extra period, Cottonwood flexed its muscles, scoring the final six points in overtime to capture a 59-55 win — their first victory this season and the first under the new coach Miller.

The Colts would then lose the final game of their preseason Dec. 30 against California school San Clemente, 63-40 to close out December at 1-8 overall with region play soon to follow in the new year.

Going into region play, the Cottonwood Colts boys basketball team knows they have a shot at making some new memories.

For starters, the Colts, along with all the other teams in Class 5A, will be seeded into the state tournament, meaning they no longer have to worry about having to play their way into the big dance.

Cottonwood fans will remember that two years ago, the Colts were within one game of qualifying for state, but lost 59-43 to

Brighton in a state play-in game.

While some might argue that the new RPI (ratings performance index that seeds all teams for the playoffs) system just gives Cottonwood and all the other high schools a participation trophy just for playing, the fact is that the Colts are under the leadership of a new head coach and it will take time for the team to gel.

The good news, however, is that Cottonwood is returning several players from last year’s team that finished the 2019 season strong.

And so far, the early returns on this team is that despite a 1-8 preseason record, the Colts have an unselfish bunch willing to battle for loose balls and score with uncanny balance.

Chief among the scorers thus far is Noah Widerberg, who leads Cottonwood in scoring with 11.8 points per game as of Jan. 21. (He also leads the team in three-point shots made, with 19.)

Jeo Sellers, who found himself as more of a bit player last season under former coach Gummersall, has emerged as a go-to guy for this Cottonwood team, averaging 10 points per outing.

Aiden Oliphant is stepping up for the squad in a big way as well, chipping in about eight points while leading the team in rebounds with six per contest.

And Andre Cooper, who like the aforementioned others filled in as role players in last year’s edition, is tacking on about seven points per game for Cottonwood.

Perhaps one other interesting statistic under this Cottonwood squad is that they seem to be a rebounding team by committee, as at least six Colts average two or more boards per game through nine games. l

So far, so good for top Cottonwood girls swimmers heading into region meets

R

oughly one year after the Cottonwood girls swim team finished fourth at the Class 5A state tournament, a young and determined squad is already showing they will be a handful to deal with in 2020. Two swimmers in particular are already posting impressive finishes in preseason meets.

As many might recall, junior Emma Walker is another in a long line of Colts swimmers—legendary Rhyan White was the most visible, obviously—who went to state, won a title (in the 100 breaststroke) and return with more time on their hands to win even more championship medals.

Walker already has posted the second-fastest 100 breaststroke time in Utah at 1:07.12 and the fastest in Class 5A during preseason. She’s still 5 seconds off the state record. But, if you’d want to bet on anyone threatening the mark by the time she makes it to state, it’s her.

Walker also has posted the fourth-fastest time in the 200 IM this preseason—third-best in Class 5A, at 2:12.68. She came up just short of winning the state title in this pursuit last year and so all eyes will be on her to see if she can top last year’s performance by the time the Colts make it back to BYU.

But, Walker is only one of two Colts swimmers who can compete to win every time they step on the starting blocks.

Cottonwood junior Jessica Loyd also finished second, but did so in the 500 freestyle at state in 2018. She already has had the fourth fastest time this season at 5:21.31. So, heavyweight competitors like Olympus and East, who also have great talent, had best watch out for the Colts in region meets, because they’re coming.

Loyd finished third in the 200 freestyle race at BYU last spring at state, and so she wasted no time posting a scorching time of 1:59.70 this November at the Polar Bear Plunge—the fourth best time in Class 5A and seventh best statewide this year. Loyd is also a threat in the 100 butterfly, having set the state’s seventh-fastest time this preseason.

With the region meets on tap next, you can expect Loyd and Walker to shave a second or two off of those times since they’re still in preseason shape. Will they threaten state records? Time will tell. But, with top 10 times already being posted statewide in the preseason meets, Cottonwood will carry a big stick come tournament time. l

Young Cottonwood boys swimmers look to replace a program icon

But, one year after Cottonwood sophomore Martin Anders shocked the swimming world by winning an individual Class 5A state title as a freshman in the 200 butterfly despite not posting a top-20 time leading up to the biggest event of the year, it’s clear that the Colts might still be young.

Anyone would be a fool to count them out. While Kimble is off to college, Anders is definitely back, having already set one top15 time statewide in the preseason in what was Kimble’s signature event, the 100 breaststroke.

Anders has also set a top-15 time in preseason in the 100 butterfly, and so you can be assured that as the season goes on into region meets, he’ll be in the mix in the 200 butterfly as well.

Fellow sophomore Jacob Ricci — who along with Anders and Kimble won two relay state titles for Cottonwood last year — has also notched a top-20 finish in the preseason,

doing so in the 100 backstroke.

While the locker room won’t have Kimble in it in 2020, you can look for new blood to rejuvenate Cottonwood boys swimming as it seeks to improve on a second place finish at state. l

Planning for our Future The City will embark on drafting our 10year General Plan this year. It is an exciting time for us to decide how we want our City to grow and thrive into the future. This broad planning tool is our guiding document that outlines vision, values and goals for the City.

While state code requires we have a plan in place to address land use, transportation and housing, our General Plan encompasses these topics and many more. This plan also looks at parks, recreation, civic, educational Mayor Cherie Wood and cultural activities in addition to the underlying infrastructure that supports it all.

As we look to our last General Plan in 2009, it is remarkable to see our progress and how we have gained strength and stability. We carry on our tradition of local control and customer oriented services – all while building a better City. A few highlights we accomplished over the past 10 years: Promise South Salt Lake – we set out to move the needle on education and have done just that Establish a Downtown – located a WinCo grocery store, new housing and the Mill is underway Streetcar – the S-Line added 4 transit stops and has spurred redevelopment all around it Arts – Established a Creative Industry Zone, Arts Council events and public arts projects Parks & Trails – Adopted Parks Master Plans; built new, expanded & improved parks citywide; Parley’s Trail completed; built 1.25 miles of Mill Creek Trail and built bike lanes We are no longer a pass through community. Citywide we have added housing and job opportunities. We have a thriving arts community, a diverse resident base and dedicated employees serving you. Your City Council and I are committed to capitalizing on our successes and seeing to it that the next decade is equally as noteworthy.

Over the course of the next year we will be identifying needs, outlining goals and obtaining your feedback. Your input is essential in this process. We will work to gather bold ideas to lay the groundwork and formulate a plan for our future. Together I am confident we can make the next 10 years even better than the last.

Water Division Fast Facts Each month of 2020, we will take a look at a service, utility or function of the City. This will provide a look at of how things work and will also provide contact information if you have questions. Up first is the Water Division, part of the Public Works Department.

Preparedness Tip #2: Create an Emergency Exit Plan and Designate Meeting Areas Take a moment to imagine there is an emergency in your home and you need to exit in a hurry. What are the best escape routes from your home? Are there family members who need assistance exiting? Find at least two ways out of each room.

Then determine the equipment and supplies necessary to get out safely.

Once you have written down the routes, you’ve got the beginning of a plan that can be expanded upon.

Designate two areas where your family can meet in the event of an emergency. Choose one right outside your home in case of a sudden household emergency and select a second meeting place approximately one block from your home in the event of a larger incident. Lastly, practice, Practice, PRACTICE.

City Council Corner – Celebrating History with Love

By Natalie Pinkney, City Council At-Large February marks the celebration of Black History Month.

For the next 29 days we honor the leaders and citizens who made it possible for someone like me to sit on our council.

As I think about the journey Black Americans have made in our country, I am reminded of a quote dear to my heart by the great American author bell hooks, that “there can be no love without justice.” Justice is what allows us to live in harmony as a community of people who look different, believe different, and represent a diversity of backgrounds.

It is the love that harmonizes our communities to rise above our differences.

Love pushes us past the fears of new faces, new perspectives, and distinct experiences. Love shows us that while we may not start out by embracing the unknown, we are nevertheless improved by it and as we improve so does our world. It is everyday people, deciding to accept others that bring our communities together. This month I urge us all to think about the faces of our community, old and new, and to strive to meet them not with resistance, but with the love that allows us all to achieve our highest potential.

Public Safety South Salt Lake’s Sixth Fire Chief Appointed I was sworn in as Fire Chief on January 10, 2020. I am honored to lead this amazing group of skilled firefighters and paramedics as they serve our community. I have worked alongside them over the past 24 years and can attest to their utmost dedication to the residents and visitors of the City of South Salt Lake. Tips for Drivers Sharing the Road with Pedestrians With the opening of the 1000 West Homeless Resource Center, there have tragically been three auto-pedestrian accidents on 3300 South, adjacent to the resource center. All three of these accidents were attributed to pedestrian error and were outside of the designated crosswalk at 900 West.

The City of South Salt Lake has been working with UDOT to expedite the installation of a crosswalk at the corner of 1000 West, which will be equipped with visible warning lights when activated

by a pedestrian using the crosswalk. The installation of the new crosswalk project could take up to 90-120 days to complete.

As you drive through the area of 3300 South, between 900 West and 1100 West, I ask that you take extra precautions in watching for pedestrians.

Here are some safety tips to help you avoid being involved in an automobile pedestrian accident:

Think pedestrian safety: Everyone is responsible for pedestrian safety, not just those walking. As a driver, always be on watch for those crossing the road.

Avoid distractions: Distracted driving is especially dangerous; you’re much less likely to notice a pedestrian if you’re using a phone or texting.

Look for pedestrians: Always look ahead of where you are driving. If you see pedestrians gathered on the side of the road, assume they may cross. Slow down!

Look before you turn: Pedestrians may not always be directly in front of you, they could be in the crosswalk preparing to cross as you turn. It is always best to attempt eye contact with a pedestrian before you begin your turn.

Follow traffic signs and signals: Be aware of pedestrian signs and signals. Also be prepared to yield the right of way to pedestrians.

Always give pedestrians the right of way: Pedestrians may not always follow the rules. They may walk on a don’t walk signal; they may jaywalk or dart into traffic; or they may unexpectedly appear in the roadway as they attempt to cross in an unmarked crosswalk. Be prepared to yield the right of way to any pedestrian in the roadway.

Being involved in an auto-pedestrian accident can be a very traumatic experience. In the event you hit a pedestrian, you could potentially face punishment that can include fines and the loss of your license. Plus it is a blow to many people’s consciences.

If you’re in an accident involving a pedestrian, call 911 immediately.

No one wants additional auto-pedestrian accidents to happen. As you drive, especially in the area of the resource center, please be aware what is going on around you – pay attention to driving conditions, other drivers and pedestrians.

It is unlawful for the owner, occupant, lessor or agent of any property to fail to remove or cause to be removed from such paved sidewalk all hail, snow or sleet falling thereon within a reasonable time after such snow, hail or sleet has fallen; in any event to be removed not later than the same day in which said snow, sleet or hail has fallen; provided, in case the said snow, sleet, hail has fallen after the hours of six p.m., the same may be removed the following day by 10:00 a.m.

Promise Teen Dungeons and Dragons Club

The Commonwealth Performing Arts and Youth Entrepreneurial Center afterschool program was recently awarded a Dry Creek Charity mini grant to start a Literacy through Dungeons and Dragons club for teens. This club has been wildly successful, encouraging teens to build important social and emotional skills through collaboration and game play, all while engaging in meaningful, targeted literacy-based activities. Our teens have spent hours pouring themselves into designing their own characters and battling evil monsters, while bringing their creative writing to life in the process. We have even seen some of our quietest teens come out of their shells, engaging in both the written and theatrical aspects of the club and ultimately ďŹ nding their voice!

Utah high schools asked to raise the bar on sportsmanship

technical foul, 15-yards or a penalty shot are just a few examples of punishments that result from unsportsmanlike conduct.

More serious violations can result in fines, suspension or even termination.

Why suffer through penance or pay thousands of dollars to make amends when you can just as easily be a good sport?

The Utah-BYU rivalry again took sportsmanship’s center stage because of several incidents in an early December basketball game at the Huntsman Center. Several Cougar students began singing their fight song during a halftime presentation honoring former Utah head coach Rick Majerus. The melee that followed included fights in the stands and altercations on the court.

This basketball game is not the first time the two schools have squared off. In 2008, BYU quarterback Max Hall said, “I don’t like Utah, in fact I hate them. I hate everything about them.” He later apologized. Utah Head Coach Larry Krystkowiak said in 2015 he did not care if the teams ever played again.

College sports participants are not the only poor examples.

In 2009, two Ute Conference youth football teams forfeited all of their games and the conference president was removed after allegations of using illegal players. The whistleblower received threats and called the police for protection.

“You’re an idiot, you have ruined our son’s season, and I am going to burn your house down,” was the threat that prompted a call to the police, all over a youth football game.

Has sportsmanship been lost for a willingness to win at all costs?

“It can be horrific. I had never been so scared,” Peggy Pyle, a county recreation scorekeeper said about her experience witnessing a brawl at a slow pitch softball game.

The Utah High School Activities Association (UHSAA) has recently made an exaggerated emphasis on sportsmanship at its contests.

“The organization is committed to stressing educational and cultural values,” UHSAA director Rob Cuff said. “We stand to improve the participation experience in activities, promote life skills, lessons involved in competitive activities, foster sportsmanship, mutual respect and assist those who oversee high school sports and activities at UHSAA member schools.”

In a City Journal survey, 78% of respondents said parents are most responsible for sportsmanship, good or bad.

“Young amateur athletes often emulate what they see being done by college and professional athletes,” West Jordan High School athletic director Carlson Boudreaux said. “In my view, competition has become more and more about making the other guy look bad, not just about doing your best. We ask our coaches to address sportsmanship and proper behavior with parents at parent meetings. Our objective is to encourage loud, rowdy, positive fan support for your sports teams.”

UHSAA schools have been encouraged to use an initiative called Do Rowdy Right.

“We focus on teaching the fans, all fans, not to let the cheering get personal. Our students and parents are monitored throughout the contest and we try to stop negative comments. I am not going to pretend we are always right, but adults are some of the most important people in teaching good sportsmanship,” Boudreaux said.

Copper Hills High School is among several schools that have implemented ways to improve the fan experience.

“It is difficult enforcing good behavior at sporting events,” Grizzly athletic director Andrew Blanchard said. “We have student

‘spirit leaders’ that come to all athletic events.

They are the leaders of cheers and behavior.

Our administrative team works closely with those students encouraging positive cheers.

Choosing these leaders is very important.”

The players on the team reflect their coaches views.

“This is something everyone can work on,” Cyprus head basketball coach Tre Smith said. “I am sure players, coaches and officials have all felt disrespected at times. My biggest thing is wanting to create a sense of great character with kids in the program.”

The UHSAA program called Raise the Bar encourages four ways to improve sportsmanship at athletic events: teach, enforce, award and model.

In the 2018-19 athletic school year, every UHSAA 6A and 5A school experienced a player or coach ejection. The high school program to improve these statistics includes objectives to help each school earn sportsmanship awards.

“Every school can win at sportsmanship,” Cuff said.

All UHSAA members schools were given a banner to hang in their gymnasium. Each banner has empty spaces for gold stars that can be earned by completing the objectives outlined in the program.

They include: displaying the schools sportsmanship policy, zero ejections, athletes and parents signing the sportsmanship pledge and school sportsmanship video contest entries.

During the school year, schools evalu-

ate their sportsmanship application and can mark areas as successful or areas that need improvement.

“We can promote the development of character and ensure the teaching of positive values,” Cuff said. “We must avoid negative behavior and demonstrate respect and appreciation of opponents. Officials, fans and coaches. Get loud, have a great time, but remain positive.”

In the City Journals sportsmanship survey, 56% of those filling out the questionnaire said they had displayed poor sportsmanship.

Meanwhile, 91% do not think all participants deserve participation awards.

“Disappointment and failure is life,” Blanchard said. “Disappointment can be a useful motivator to athletes. It can help them overcome the negative feelings that come with losing.”

In 2019, the UHSAA changed how teams qualify for the state tournament. The changes sparked a controversy over if all teams should make it or not. Beginning this last fall, all teams make the tournament but are seeded by a ratings performance index.

According to the Cyprus head basketball coach, his team needed to learn something before making the playoffs.

“My first three years at Cyprus my teams did not deserve to make the tournament and we didn’t. I’m saying we did not work hard enough to earn it. I needed to teach my program what hard work was and what needed to be done to have sustained success,” Smith said.

Taylorsville athletic director Guy Mackay agrees that sports can teach more than winning.

“One of our big problems is that winning is described today only with the final score,” Mackay said. “The problem is the mindset.

What is someone trying to accomplish with athletics. Winning is more than the actual scoreboard.”

The sportsmanship epidemic has had on impact on officials. Recently, the UHSAA pleaded for qualified officials to help support the student athletes. A shortage of qualified officials has become a national problem.

The states sportsmanship initiative hopes to make the vital improvements so that high schools will be able to continue to offer athletic competition.

The 2019 6A sportsmanship video winner was Skyridge High School; Alta won the 5A division.

After 66 years, SSL firefighter honored

By Bill Hardesty | b.hardesty@mycityjournals.com Hauck returned to Salt Lake with a mission. She and her crew started to dig for information. They went through piles of documents but found nothing. They decided to do a Hail Mary pass by posting their request on Facebook.

Soon pieces started to fall into place. A former SLC firefighter contacted them with a copy of a small newspaper clipping indicating that Plant did die while on duty. By doing a record search they found his grave.

Someone also sent a phone number saying that it might be George Jr.’s phone number.

Hauck called it for a week with great excitement, but all it would do is go to voicemail and, worst of all, the mailbox was full.

After shopping, Hauck called one more time and someone answered the phone.

She called at three but again it went to voicemail. They played phone tag for four days.

On the fifth day, a woman answered the phone. It was George Jr.’s daughter, Plant’s granddaughter, Lori. Hauck explained why she was calling, and Lori agreed to confirm the event with her father. She called back with confirmation.

ssistant Fire Chief George Plant, one of the original 10 volunteer firefighters in South Salt Lake, was killed fighting a structure fire on June 14, 1953. He suffered a heart attack while working on a faulty pumper.

“He saved many firefighters lives because he kept the water pumping,” Captain Lyndsie Hauck, Captain B Platoon at Station 43 South Salt Lake Fire Department, commented.

Why is a death that occurred over 66 years ago news now? Even though he is the only firefighter who died in the line of duty for SSL, Plant never received any national recognition of his sacrifice. That oversight is now corrected thanks to the work led by Hauck.

Cottonwood High granted independance, won’t play for championship next season

ottonwood High scored 13 points in one game — in a loss to West High. Those were the only points the 0-10 Colts earned on the football field all season. After losing every varsity, JV and freshman football game this season, Cottonwood High elected not to play in the first round state playoffs.

vember to seek playing independently — a move that was granted almost immediately Jan. 15 by the Utah High School Activities Association (UHSAA).

“It isn’t about the cost of the program,” Principal Terri Roylance said. “It’s a safety factor for us. We’ve had as few as 30 athletes on the field, playing both sides of the ball,

many of them after playing freshman and JV games, then they go up against 90 players on the opposing team. We knew we needed to step back, build our numbers and play teams closer to our size.”

She said that this past fall, a freshman, who played JV and varsity all season, watched his sister play volleyball, with ice wrapped around his knee.

“There’s no way he could give 100% week after week, but without numbers, he felt he couldn’t take a week off,” Roylance said, adding that there hasn’t been enough players to support all three school teams for the past three seasons.

Roylance said that numbers have dwindled for Cottonwood as participation in the football feeder league has diminished. The school’s changing population also contributes to the change as it pulls students from several communities, including a large number of refugees, so participation may be limited as students need to ride busses back to their homes, where many take care of younger siblings. Many students also have afterschool jobs to contribute financially to their families, she said.

Since 2015, the team has only won a

total of four games. Just seasons earlier, in 2010 and 2011, they were ranked in the top 10 in the state and in 2008, Cottonwood was having the lopsided wins over their opponents as they played in the state finals.

This coming season, there will be no chance to even compete for a state championship. However, Cottonwood administrators say they will re-evaluate playing UHSAA in the fall 2021 after next season.

Roylance added the decision was made to seek independence after talking to the school community council, football coach and department. Since being granted independence, she has “not heard one negative complaint from parents.”

Cottonwood wasn’t the only school that was granted independence. Timpanogos and Payson high schools also will not be playing UHSAA ball and Judge Memorial Catholic High School also sought independence earlier. All of those teams are in Cottonwood’s upcoming season schedule.

“We are putting aside funding for transportation, but it’s important that we do this so we can rebuild our program, with emphasis on safety, enthusiasm and having fun competing,” Roylance said. l

Battling Cottonwood girls basketball team nearly pulls off several upsets in preseason

I

f anyone thought that the Cottonwood girls basketball team would give up when their longtime head coach stepped down after nine seasons at the helm, they would have been dead wrong.

The natural reaction for any team losing their head coach would be one of regret. But, under new head coach Natalie Wonnacott — who was Janae Hirschi’s top assistant for several years at Cottonwood — the Colts aren’t laying down for anyone this preseason.

Cottonwood opened the season at home against Cyprus and wasted no time getting started, roaring out to a 13-5 lead. The visiting Pirates would trim the lead to four at the half — an advantage the home-team Colts would extend to eight after three periods.

Cyprus would outscore Cottonwood 12-4 in the fourth quarter to send the game into an overtime period — one in which the Colts couldn’t score in a heartbreaking 45-43 loss.

The aftereffects of that devastating loss were felt in Cottonwood’s next two games, as it struggled to get above the 30-point barrier or hold Orem or West Jordan under 50 points in consecutive losses.

Back at home on Dec. 10, Cottonwood hosted Kearns. Despite getting out to another slow start and falling behind 30-12 at halftime, the Colts showed improvement in the third quarter, winning that quarter 15-13 before losing the game, 60-43.

Another cold-shooting first half hurt Cottonwood on Dec. 12 at Alta, who flew out to a 28-14 first half advantage and held the Colts to under 30 points, giving Cottonwood its fifth loss in five games.

The Colts would wrap up the preseason just before the holiday break on Dec. 16 at Summit Academy. Cottonwood fought back from a 12-4 first quarter deficit to trail only by 32-28 going into the fourth quarter.

But, Summit Academy would hit its free throws down the stretch, handing the Colts at 0-6 overall another loss — this one a 44-36 decision.

Valentine’s Day: The Day of the Dead

Instead of focusing on the fact that you aren’t in a relationship this February, focus on loving yourself by giving love to those around you instead. Here are 3 ideas to get you out of the love day funk.

1 - Give love to friends and family. It could be as simple as sending out a card or two to your closest friends or someone you know that is in a similar situation, to going all out and inviting people over for a dinner party and movie night.

2 – Give love to a stranger. This could be as simple as making a monetary donation to a charity, organize a collection of needed items for shelter or go great guns and spend a day volunteering. Do this in honor of your loved one if you’re missing one.

3 – Give love to an animal. Keep it simple and spoil your pet. Take your dog to his favorite dog park or spend an afternoon reading snuggled up with your cat. Maybe make a donation to a foundation that provides therapy animals for people, like Utah Pet Partners or run a food drive for the Humane Society.

Just like Mother’s and Father’s Day, Valentine’s Day is a day meant to spend appreciating someone. It’s a day intended to lift someone special.

Scent of Mystery I blame Love’s Baby Soft for destroying my archeological career. Up until I started spritzing the perfume popular with the seventh-grade girls in my class, I’d never given any thought to how I smelled. My mom was lucky to get me to shower, yet, here I was, dousing myself in baby powder-scented toilet water.

The perfume’s slogan should have been a warning, “Because innocence is sexier than you think.”

Seriously? Who came up with that?

My mom saw the signs and tried desperately to distract me. Basketball practice.

Dance lessons. Piano lessons. But it was too late. I’d discovered this scent could lure 12-year-old boys to my locker better than a steak sandwich (which I also tried).

But this wasn’t me! I didn’t care about boys! I had planned a life of adventure!

In first grade, I decided to become an author. I read “The Little Princess” until I absorbed the ability to write through osmosis.

I spent the day in my room, penning stories and jotting down poems then submitted my siblings to “a reading” where I’d share my work and they’d complain to mom.

Becoming Nancy Drew was my second-grade goal. I was ready to uncover ridiculous clues to break up the den of bank robbers living somewhere in Murray, Utah.

As a third-grader, I checked out library books so I could learn hieroglyphics. When the call came to go dig up tombs in Egypt, I’d be ready. I would trek near the pyramids,

wearing khakis and a cute pith helmet, encountering mummies and warding off ancient curses.

Fourth and fifth grade were spent honing my dance skills. Ballet, tap, jazz, hokey-pokey – I did it all. I’d practice every day, secure in the knowledge I’d perform on Broadway.

Or at least the Murray Theater.

In sixth grade, I discovered Paul Zindel’s “The Pigman” and my desire to write returned full-force. It was decided. In the future, I would be a writing, dancing, detective archeologist who spent equal time on the stage and the Amazon rainforest.

But seventh grade! Boys! Gah!!

Suddenly, I wanted to smell good. I became obsessed with every pimple, every pore and studied the beautiful girls who made glamour seem effortless.

I read teen magazines. I learned I needed glossy lips and thick eyelashes to attract the opposite sex. (I tried to no avail to create the perfect cat’s eye, which turned out fine because I’m not a cat.) I had bangs so high and hairspray stiff, they were a danger to low-flying birds.

I fell in love with Shaun Cassidy, which was crazy because, as a writer, how could I marry someone who sang “Da Doo Ron Ron”? Those aren’t even words!

I earned money for Levi’s 501 button-fly jeans and Converse shoes. I bought Great Lash mascara, with its pink-and-green packaging - and Love’s Baby Soft.

as confused as I was. Just last summer we played baseball in the street and now we circled each other like strangers, unsure of what the hell was going on. Hormones raged.

Thanks to the distraction of the opposite sex, I never deciphered hieroglyphics. I never performed under the bright lights of a New York stage. I was never asked to solve the Mystery of the Secret Bracelet.

FREE NEWLY ELECTED CITY COUNCIL MAKES HISTORY WITH ITS DIVERSITY

T

he 2020-2021 South Salt Lake City Council is making history. The first person of color is on the council and for the first time the super majority of the council, that is five members, are women.

Natalie Pinkney (Council Member at-large) and LeAnne Huff (District 1) join the council with reelected members Portia Mila (District 4) and Shane Siwik (District 5) along with Ray deWolfe (Council Member at-large), Corey Thomas (District 2), and Sharla Bynum (District 3).

Pinkney, 26, has lived in South Salt Lake City for over a year. She earned a bachelor of psychology from Marquette University and a master of education leadership and policy from the University of Utah. She works as a campus and corporate recruiter.

Pinkney’s campaign slogan was to “Move Forward Together.” When asked how she was going to fulfill that promise, Pinkney said, “I plan to fulfill this theme by first proposing initiatives, resolutions, and ordinances that increase transparency and collaboration of city residents such as a participatory budget and neighborhood councils. I also plan to keep my engagement with the community by being active in neighborhoods and fulfilling the wants and needs of residents. Moving forward together means listening to residents and doing what they want and need above all else.”

Pinkney has three issues she wants to work on during her term: increase budget revenue, so that departments are well staffed and able to accomplish city goals; work with the Prom-

ise program on their equity and diversity goals; and create more ways for residents and leaders to get involved in the city.

Since Pinkney is a groundbreaker being the first person of color on the City Council, the City Journals asked her what that means to her.

“I am so grateful and honored to be the first person of

color and first Black woman on the council. We have so much diversity in our city and having representation that reflects, that is a huge first step. For me this is about serving my community and making sure we are having important conversations that include everyone and makes everyone feel included in the city,” she said.
