hings may look a little different when Monte Vista, South Jordan, American Academy of Innovation and Bingham High as students return to school—and not just procedures with face coverings and social distancing.

At Monte Vista, construction is finishing on a $2.5 million addition that includes six classrooms, a large collaboration area, a conference room, a teacher prep room and an Americans with Disabilities Act-compliant restroom.

The additional 10,000 square feet will help to house older students who have been studying in the school’s 11 portables since Monte Vista, which was built in the 1970s, has about 900 students, more than the capacity for the original building plans, said Dave Rostrom, district facilities services director.

“We’ll likely keep all the portables on site this year, although a couple will be empty,” Rostrom said, adding that they’ll re-evaluate the need for portable classrooms after this school year. “The addition will be a nice space for those in the school.”

SLC companies team up to develop face masks

wo companies in Salt Lake City are teaming up to develop a face mask that packs a punch in the fight against COVID-19 and other viruses.

Dr. Sonny Bal, the president and CEO of SINTX Technologies (www.sintx.com), said the partnership with O2TODAY (www.o2today.com) will help create masks that people are happy to wear and that are effective at controlling the spread of infectious disease.

The key is a material called silicon nitride.

Bal said that SINTX began antiviral testing of the material about a year and a half ago out of scientific curiosity. They found that silicon nitride was effective at inactivating several viruses, leading them to believe it would be a good material for masks during the flu season.

When COVID-19 came along, they started looking for mask companies and manufacturers, particularly in the Salt Lake City area, which is how Bal discovered O2TODAY. “Specific to COVID-19, our hope is to inactivate the virus on synthetic surfaces,” Bal said. “For example, your masks, but more importantly, on tabletops, commonly touched surfaces, cell phone covers, screens.

We know the COVID-19 virus can persist for days…If we create surfaces that don’t have to be wiped down with cleaning agents and bleach all the time, I think we can contribute to discouraging the spread of COVID-19 worldwide, particularly among the populations that are most vulnerable to it.”

Bal said the companies bring different strengths to the partnership.

“Silicon nitride is our main and only product for SINTX and we believe we are the world’s leaders on this, having published on it and studied it, particularly its remarkable properties in terms of inactivating pathogens that have since been reproduced by other medical centers,” he said. “O2TODAY

brings a phenomenal amount of knowledge about masks, their social positioning, the customer base, the retail sales, how to sell them, how to make them.”

Bal said silicon nitride works in a similar way that commercial cleaners do, essentially making its own ammonia.

“The surface chemistry has nitrogen in it which reacts with moisture, so if you touch a surface or you rub it with a moist rag, there’s a hydrolytic reaction with the water that produces a microscopic amount of ammonia on the surface,” he said. “It’s harmless to the human touch and it doesn’t smell, but when a microbe touches it, like bacteria or the virus, it’s inactivated, just like a commercial cleaner would.”

Think of masks as passive versus active.

A regular cloth mask might trap the virus, but not kill it.

“Some studies have shown that the COVID-19 virus can stay active and infectious on a mask for up to seven days after you throw it out,” Bal said.

A more active mask would inactivate the virus.

“With silicon nitride, it’s a two-prong effect,” he said. “The material is harmless to human cells but will inactivate the virus. The speed of inactivation is very impressive. I’ve seen the effect within a minute so it’s not a matter of hours or days. Our strategy is to develop a mask that actively degrades and inactivates infectious agents like viruses and bacteria.”

Bal said they hope to have a commercially available consumer mask by the end of the year.

“The research we’re doing right now is integrating the silicon nitride particles or soluble products into the mask fabric in such a way that you’re not breathing the particles in. They’re all in the mask itself, and you can breathe easy…

before the agreement, gives us a timeline before the end of the year before we have a commercially available consumer mask.”

They also hope to eventually create masks that would be available on a medical level.

“Medical facilities would be a very important market because contamination is big in hospitals,” he said. “Medical personnel need masks. They’ve been wearing them before

n unprecedented times with uncertainty continuing over many aspects of life due to the current pandemic, the idea of sports at all levels coming back sounds so refreshing.

Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) fights have resumed, PGA golf tournaments are again being held, Major League baseball has begun their delayed season and the NBA created a bubble in Orlando, Florida to bring 22 teams to play out the last regular season games and playoffs—all without fans in attendance.

And yet, just as our excitement builds as we watch live sports returning, we see the number of COVID-19 cases, patterns and deaths fluctuating on a daily basis and are left to wonder—will high school fall sports really happen? The seasons have already begun for most of the state’s boys golf, girls soccer, girls tennis, volleyball, football and cross country teams, but how long will it last? As schools begin opening statewide as well, a lot of apprehension hangs in the air.

“This is literally an hour-by-hour situation as we have been continually adapting to the current pandemic, making plans to ‘return to play,’ scrapping plans and making new plans,” Utah High School Activities Associ-

ation director Rob Cuff said.

The UHSAA has been working tirelessly since March when the coronavirus shut down the sports world—and the country for a time—to brainstorm scenarios that could allow Utah high school athletics to resume.

Initially, the organization suspended play for two weeks and continued to delay participation until mid-April when the spring sports seasons were officially canceled.

Before the school year ended, the UHSAA lifted the typical moratorium that begins after Memorial Day to allow sports programs to hold summer trainings without date restrictions while encouraging strict adherence to local health recommendations. On July 10, the UHSAA board voted to resume the fall sports season and within two weeks had released a “Return to Play” set of guidelines to help districts and schools to outline their own protocols based on the local health procedures in their area and with specific evaluations of the use of their own facilities.

Those policies include: 1) Eliminating handshakes between opposing teams and coaches.

2) “Masking up” all players and coaches

who are on the sidelines along with fans in the stands, particularly when social distancing isn’t possible.

3) Having schools and districts establish and enforce protocols and place signs at their facilities to inform participants and spectators of their own required policies, which may include mandated masks. This also includes determining seating capacity allowed.

4) Mandating that sick players, coaches or spectators not participate in practices or games.

5) Having each school fill out Utah Event Management forms and sending copies to the UHSAA. Additionally, daily temperature screenings for athletes and coaches, constant sanitizing, using personal water bottles, having wider sidelines, longer timeouts and setting a cap on uniformed players (at 50 for football) are among other procedures being required for each school.

In an Aug. 13 memo to UHSAA schools and administrators, Cuff called for all members to “double down on efforts to ensure that safety guidelines are being universally adhered to across the association…one district,

one school, one team, one coach, one student participant who chooses not to follow these guidelines has the potential to undermine participation for all.”

While many states around the country have delayed the start of high school fall sports until at least the start of the new year, Utah was one of 17 states nationwide to begin as scheduled.

“For months, we have been working closely with the state health department and the governor’s office to stay in tune to what’s happening,” Cuff said. “We are in uncharted territory, so we are carefully and constantly navigating how to move forward.”

Keeko Georgelas, Murray High’s athletic director said, “The district has worked really hard to put a model in place. A lot of work has gone into designing a model to give this thing a shot and it has a chance to work, although I’m apprehensive about the human nature of things, especially in the pregame and post-game. I’m actually not as fearful of the games themselves.”

And despite the best efforts of the nearly 100,000 members and 155 teams state-wide, COVID-19 has again disrupted high school sports in Utah.

A positive test on the Lone Peak girls soccer team put the whole program in quarantine, missing four games over a two-week period.

Most notably, three players on Bingham’s football team tested posi-

tive which led to the cancellation of its season opener against Weber Aug. 13.

“Those kids have never showed any symptoms and are as healthy as can be,” said Bingham head coach Dave Peck, who noted that they were cleared for a return to practice Aug. 17. “The health department came in and tested the whole team—100 kids and coaches—and there were two more positive tests found. Those players have been quarantining and will for 10 days. What we’ve proven here is that we’re not spreading it through our team; it’s coming through outside sources.”

Peck said his program canceled camps and scrimmages over the summer to deal with cases and out of an abundance of caution, but losing that time along with their first game has been tough.

“We have a group that could seriously challenge for the state title, but with all that we dealt with in the summer, we’re behind,” he said. “Plus, we didn’t play this week while everyone else did.”

And yet, the grim reality of the COVID-19 situation sets in further for Peck as he has watched one player struggle with coronavirus so severely that the player’s 25-year-old sister contracted the virus and she is now on life support.

Now, for the second week in a row to begin the football season, a game

will not be played as Cyprus had two players test positive which will cancel its game with Ridgeline Aug. 20.

These cancellations are considered no contests and will not be rescheduled, for most sports, and do not count against them in RPI rankings.

And those are just the more current cases that are more widely known.

That doesn’t even include the various sports from Bonneville, Box Elder, Clearfield, Farmington, Fremont, Granger, Herriman, Layton, Syracuse, Weber and others that had to cancel practices, scrimmages and camps throughout the summer as they dealt with positive tests for some players and coaches.

“We’re doing all we can to play safe so we can play as long as we can,” Georgelas said.

Cuff noted the “remarkable job” schools and districts are doing.

“This is a massive effort to provide the best for our kids,” he said. “We want them safe, so we’ll start playing.

We recognize that among all of the factors we are considering that mental wellness for our student-athletes are so important and we are constantly evaluating if the reward outweighs the risk so we can condense or adjust things.

We’re certainly in uncharted territory, but we are working diligently to ensure that we make the safest decisions for everyone. As long as school’s in session, we’ll keep playing.” l

“It’s too steep. It was built by the building code of 1975, but we’re updating it and adding more lighting—LED lights,” he said.

The upgrades are also to ensure the elevator at the west end of the main hall is ADA compliant, check fire alarms and sprinklers, and update the plumbing by replacing the copper lines.

“Our culinary water was a real issue,” she said. “We have a galvanized water line.”

the school to the softball field. Some areas were painted and got new flooring or carpeting.

Bingham’s original remodeling plan was to be completed in five phases. With funding a concern with the COVID-19 pandemic, those plans could change.

“It’s all up to the [Jordan] Board [of Education] now if we’ll have five phases in five years,” Rostrom said.

The first phase, which focused on the performing arts area and finished in September 2019, cost about $4 million. Phase two comes in around $9 million, he said.

At South Jordan Elementary, the Rams will see a new shade canopy over their playground in the southeast corner of the campus.

“They’re the last year-round school and students outside in the heat of summer can get hot, so we’re seeing how this works and helps them,” Rostrom said.

At American Academy of Innovation, Director of Technology Robert Warren said, “we’ve dug a lot of dirt, poured a lot of concrete and built a lot of walls” as their fourroom addition was getting ready for its final inspection Aug. 10.

“The building really came together well and went very much as planned,” he said about the student-construction project team that oversaw the school’s 3,200-square-foot addition.

and presenting it to city officials. They met with architects, got contract bids and even during the soft closure of schools because of the COVID-19 pandemic, virtually met, tweaking “small surprises” that showed up in the building process, Warren said.

can open into one great room. The construction was completed on budget and on time, Warren said.

“The goal was to have the expansion blend into the original building so someone couldn’t tell it was an addition and they accomplished that remarkably well,” he said.

Another area of the city that has a lot of dirt turned is in the Village 8 development of Daybreak.

Shortly before the soft closure of schools, Jordan School District celebrated the groundbreaking of a 33-classroom elementary school at 11189 South Willow Walk Drive, west of Mountain View Corridor.

The new 75,255-square-foot school will follow the same design as Bastian and Golden Fields elementary schools with three classroom wings and two collaborative areas. The total cost should be less than $20 million, Rostrom said.

“There are a few delays with building materials, as factories in Mexico are shut down and with a lot of delays with trucking availability,” he said. “Most of the metal is out of Mexico so that’s some of our biggest delays.”

Even so, Rostrom still projects the school should be ready for a fall 2021 opening. By late fall 2020, he said that the walls and roof should be in place so that this coming winter, crews can work on the building’s interior.

“We’re using lots of skylights, so we have bright daylight in the interior classrooms, and we incorporate bright cheery colors,” Rostrom said. “I’m sure this school will help relieve Bastian Elementary’s enrollment, but the board will be directing those boundary changes.”

The new school capacity is built for 850 students; however, with additional use of building space and six portables, it could reach 1,050 students, he said.

Services abound for homeless, low income students

he nearly 1,900 homeless students and 11,000 on the free or reduced school lunch program in Jordan School District are in good hands. The district is bursting with support resources including Principal’s Pantries, McKinney–Vento homeless liaisons and Title 1 programs, all with the goal to meet students’ physical needs so they can be successful in school.

“The whole purpose of it is, if they are hungry or cold, they don’t think about schoolwork, and it takes them off the path of graduation,” said Robyn Luke, homeless liaison at West Jordan High School. “I’m there to keep their physical needs met so they can stay focused on graduating.”

Homeless liaisons, part of the McKinney–Vento program serving students who are homeless or living in severe economic circumstances, are stationed at each high school in JSD and at middle and elementary schools as needed. They distribute food, clothing, coats, shoes and hygiene products for students in need. Students stop by the Principal’s Pantry for something to eat if they haven’t eaten breakfast or lunch. They can also take a bag of food home for the weekend. Luke said students often worry about standing out among their peers. They are relieved to be able to get some nice clothes and a warm coat from those donated to the Principal’s Store so they can blend in with their peers.

Jordan District, said the McKinney–Vento program gives students options and opportunities to access education and to stay in school despite difficult living circumstances.

She identifies problems that keep students from coming to school and finds solutions to them. One student couldn’t afford to get to school; she provided them with a gas card.

One family had only one set of clean clothes so two boys were taking turns going to school and other students were sleeping in their cars with no access to clean clothing; Lloyd installed a washer and dryer for students at West Jordan and Copper Hills High Schools.

While distance learning this spring was a struggle for many students, it was a positive change for McKinney–Vento students, who often get distracted by worrying about how to overcome obstacles to get to school and to fit in while there, said Lloyd.

“I think the students had the opportunity to be online without having the stress about getting to school and getting homework done,” Hilda said. “It was a time for them to focus, and there were no other things that were holding them back.”

With the McKinney–Vento liaisons staying in contact with the 156 seniors in the program this spring, for the first time ever, 100% of the seniors in the program graduated.

“We just have amazing people who make sure that these kids graduate and have the best opportunity to be successful after

graduation,” Jordan Director of Communications Sandy Riesgraf said.

Superintendent Anthony Godfrey recently highlighted the work of liaisons on his Supercast. He called them “creative problem solvers,” “miracle workers” and “life-savers.” Luke also recently received the Outstanding Support Professional for 2020 award for her work expanding the Principal’s Store at WJHS. Title I schools also provide support resources for students in need. Evelyn Sadler is the parent family liaison for students of the seven Title 1 schools in Jordan District. She helps students and families access local resources and assistance programs. She helps families register for programs to help with heating bills or provides bus tokens for parents to get to a job interview. She coordinates with principals to schedule visions screenings and free eyeglasses, dental clinics, immunization clinics, visits from the Utah Food Bank and donations of shoes, coats and school supplies.

“We have programs to try and take away from any of the financial concerns that families might have about their kids succeeding in school,” said Heather Reich, a teacher at Majestic Elementary, a Title 1 school. “Our families, they might be struggling, but they do support their kids in school and they do believe in education. It’s just helping them overcome some other things to break those barriers down.”

Families can also access family support services such as the Family Learning Centers located at Heartland and Majestic Elementary Schools.

“The Learning Center is super important because it draws the families in and gives them information in order to improve their lives, which ultimately is going to improve our kids’ lives and then, really, our community and our society,” said Reich.

On the front lines of caring for low-income students are caring and dedicated teachers like Reich and her co-teacher, Kyla Asmar. They teach sixth grade at Majestic Elementary, which has the highest proportion of low-income and homeless students in the district. The two teachers have received an Effective Teachers in High Poverty Schools Award for the past three years.

Reich said the secret to their success is caring about the kids and setting high expectations for them.

“I absolutely love my kids, and they know that I do, and I think that that’s important,” Reich said. “They know that I care about them, and so they want to do well.”

Majestic teachers and administrators, including the Principal of the Year Kathe Riding, work tirelessly to take care of needs that would distract students from learning and being successful in school.

“Almost everything is harder for them,” Reich said. “They’re not sure if their water is going to be on when they get home. That’s definitely something that I never worried about as an 11-year-old.”

The district programs are in place to serve students but can only help if the families are aware of them. Lloyd said many students are embarrassed to ask for help, are unaware they qualify, or are fearful of negative repercussions from sharing information about their circumstances.

“My biggest fear is not meeting a student’s needs that really needs them because they want to be silent about it,” Lloyd said.

Earning the trust of a student is the biggest challenge and the biggest joy of her job, said Luke. She was able to help a number of new families this spring when the pandemic exacerbated their situations, and they reached out for help.

“That’s one positive that came from the coronavirus,” Luke said. “They found out I was there and I could help. I really hope we can find more. I know they’re there; I’m sure there’s homeless kids there. But I have to develop the trust, and they need to get the word out.”

A

couple from the South Jordan area is starting a new church hoping to build a community, reach youth and spread hope.

Hannah Bechtel, who is starting Sego Church with her husband Chris, said they are excited to bring the church to the area. She and Chris knew they wanted to pastor a church even in the early days of their marriage. They were pastors on staff at a church in Minnesota for 15 years.

“Through that process is when we started thinking that we could lead a church somewhere else not in Minnesota,” she said.

Hannah lived in Logan, Utah, during her high school years before going to college in Minneapolis. She said she realized how much she loved Utah after being in the state again about seven years ago.

“When I was flying home, flying over Salt Lake City, I had this feeling I had never experienced before of feeling like I was leaving home,” she said. “I realized how much I love Utah. That was home for me. When I got home, I told my husband, I think Utah is home, where I want to raise our family. I wasn’t sure how that would play out for our future in ministry. For our role as pastors, you don’t just pick your post. It’s about, where is the need?”

Hannah said they looked into the statis-

tics of Utah and learned about the high depression and suicide rates in the state.

“You could go anywhere and there’s people that need hope and joy,” she said.

The large population growth in the area also cultivated the desire to bring a new church to residents.

“We felt like the need for a church was more and more evident with the growth, the huge population growth that’s being experienced in our area,” Hannah said. “It made sense for a new church and more pastors. That’s how we ended up back in Utah and loving it.”

She said that they especially want to make a difference in the lives of youth, an issue that’s important to them living so close to Herriman High School. Herriman is one of the cities they hope to reach with Sego Church, in addition to South Jordan, Riverton and West Jordan. They hope to eventually multiply and have other churches throughout the area.

As of August, they were looking into different spaces for the church’s weekly meeting, keeping Sego Church portable rather than owning a particular building. (“The longer you can be portable, that’s more ideal,” Hannah said. ) They hope to meet in a theater or school auditorium-type space because of the optimal seating, sound equipment and parking, possibly along Mountain

View Corridor. They hope to be all set by October.

Hannah said she would describe Sego Church as non-denominational or cross-denominational.

There are several networks and organizations that help start-up churches, including the Association of Related Churches (https://www. arcchurches.com/) and the Church Multiplication Network (https://churchmultiplication.net/).

Women’s Suffrage in Utah commemorated by SoJo Heritage City Designation

n July 21,the South Jordan City Council passed Resolution r2020-49, the designation of the city of South Jordan as a Utah heritage city for 2020. It was approved by unanimous 4-0 vote.

This resolution is in commemoration the centennial year of the women’s suffrage victory on Aug. 26, 1920.

Women’s Suffrage—the right of women to vote—was won twice in Utah. The first time this was granted in Utah was in 1870 by the territorial legislature. However, the controversy over polygamy in Utah rose to prominence as Utah was being considered for statehood. As part of a national effort to try to rid the territory of Utah of polygamy, the right for women to vote was revoked by the U.S. Congress in 1887. When Utah finally was granted statehood the right to vote was restored in 1895, and also the right for women to hold office was written into the constitution of the new state.

In sharp contrast to the long fight for women’s suffrage nationally, the vote came to Utah women in 1870 without any effort on their part. At the same time, an unsuccessful effort to gain the vote for women in Utah territory had been launched in the Eastern U.S. by anti-polygamy forces; they were convinced that Utah women would vote to end plural marriage if given the chance.

Utah leaders realized that giving Utah women the vote would not mean the end of polygamy, but it might change the predominant national image of Utah women as downtrodden and oppressed. The women’s suffrage movement was supported to help stem a tide of anti-polygamy legislation by the U.S. Congress. With no dissenting votes, the Utah Territorial Legislature passed an act giving the vote (but not the right to hold office) to women on Feb. 10, 1869. Acting Governor S.A. Mann signed the act two days later.

The first woman voter in a municipal election reportedly was Sarah Young, grandniece of Brigham Young. Utah then became the second territory to give the vote to women, as the territory of Wyoming had passed a women’s suffrage act in 1869. No states were permitting women to vote at the time.

Despite efforts of national suffrage leaders Emily Richards, Sarah Kimball and Phoebe Beatie to protect the vote for Utah women from congressional action, it was taken away by the Edmunds-Tucker anti polygamy act in 1887. At this point, a fight to restore the right to vote for women would begin with Utah women. Both members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and non-members, had become active in the National Woman Suffrage Association In 1888, Emily S. Richards approached

church officials with a proposal to form a Utah suffrage association affiliated with the National Woman Suffrage Association. The territorial association was formed on Jan. 10, 1889, with leading roles given to women who were not involved in polygamous marriages. Margaret N. Caine, wife of Delegate to Congress John T. Caine, was the president, and Emily Richards was appointed a state organizer. Yet progress was stalled until the 1890 Manifesto officially declared an end to plural marriage, and Congress passed the 1894 Enabling Act, opening the door to Utah statehood.

The supporters of women’s suffrage managed to get it written into the new Utah Constitution by a comfortable majority. The new document was adopted on Nov. 5, 1895, with a provision that “the rights of citizens of the State of Utah to vote and hold office shall not be denied or abridged on account of sex.

Both male and female citizens of this state shall enjoy equally all civil, political and religious rights and privileges.”

This provision in the Utah Constitution won for women a right to vote and hold office granted at that time only in two states. This was a hard-won struggle unique to Utah in its entanglement with the issues of polygamy and statehood.

In 1913, the battle for women’s suffrage raged on. A march of 8,000 participants was

led on President Woodrow Wilson inauguration day. Half a million spectators watched; 200 were injured in the violence that broke out. During Wilson’s second inauguration in 1917, a similar march was led around the White House.

During World War I, because women took up jobs in factories to support the war, as well as taking more active roles in the war than in previous wars expectations for voting rights were increased. After the war, even the more restrained the National American Woman Suffrage Association took many opportunities to remind the president and the U.S. Congress that women’s war work should be rewarded with recognition of their political equality. Wilson responded by beginning to support woman suffrage.

In a speech on Sept. 18, 1918, Wilson said, “We have made partners of the women in this war. Shall we admit them only to a partnership of suffering and sacrifice and toil and not to a partnership of right?”

Less than a year later, the U.S. House of Representatives passed, in a 304 to 90 vote, a proposed Amendment to the Constitution.

Finally, on Aug. 26, 1920, the 19thAmendment to the United States Constitution became law, and women could vote in the fall elections, including in the presidential election. l

How you can help SoJo Police

he SoJo Police are asking residents to step up and take some positive action and become involved in Neighborhood Watch groups, or at the very least, calling the police if they see some activities that look suspicious.

Neighborhood Watch is defined by SoJo as is a group of people living in the same area who want to make their neighborhood safer by working together with the help of local law enforcement to reduce crime and improve their quality of life. Neighborhood Watch empowers residents and communities to become active in emergency preparedness, as well as the fight against crime and community disasters.

The statement below was posted on the SoJo website from Jeff Carr, South Jordan chief of police.

Carr said, “I ask that all residents become involved in their community. Becoming involved in a Neighborhood Watch group or just calling the police when you see suspicious activity are immediate ways to help.

Participating in public forums to discuss policing or asking to meet with me to discuss issues or concerns are welcome. I will always try to address your concerns promptly. We are fortunate to have a low crime rate in South

Jordan, but we are not immune from serious criminal activity. We welcome and look forward to seeing more of you participate in our collective public safety efforts.

We know we aren’t perfect, and we are always looking for ways to improve. We believe engaging with our community and involving residents are essential to those continuing improvements and a successful police department.

On behalf of the police department, thank you for your support and engagement in the city and with us.”

Carr said SoJo residents need to be involved to maintain a low crime rate where people feel safe to pursue their lives without fear. The police force in SoJo is asking for your help to identify crime early and also to give them needed feedback on ways they can improve their community involvement. Carr said reducing crime should be a community effort and that everyone in SoJo is responsible for making the community a safe place to live.

Four local students top technology awards in computing

our local high school girls recently were awarded regional winners of the National Center for Women & Information Technology Award for Aspirations in Computing.

Manya Nair, of Riverton High; Katelyn Swain, of JATC; Maya Heesch, of Providence Hall; and Sydney Leister, of Mountain Ridge High, were honored March 7 as they “significantly demonstrated interest and aptitude for computing.” They were four of the 16 regional winners and received an engraved crystal trophy for the high school as well as individual crystals, scholarship opportunities and technology prizes.

The NCWIT Award for Aspirations in Computing honors ninth through 12th grade students for their computing-related achievements and interests, and encourages them to pursue their passions. Award recipients are selected based on their aptitude and aspirations in technology and computing, as demonstrated by their computing experience,

computing-related activities, leadership experience, tenacity in the face of barriers to access and plans for post-secondary education.

Nair, who recently graduated from Riverton, was both her school’s DECA and FBLA presidents, a state champion and national top 5% in Skills USA entrepreneurship contestant, and served as a senior member of the Women Tech Council student board.

She plans to double major in computer science with an emphasis on data science, and business.

Swain got involved in technology through a Girls who Code camp and has been studying digital media and web design. She has run the websites of two schools in Jordan School District as well as a nonprofit website.

She planned to work this summer as a junior web developer and wants to pursue full stack web development and graphic design in college.

Heesch is vice president of her school

robotics club and has a passion for editing videos. She wants to earn her bachelor’s degree in computer information systems and software engineering and pursue a career in cyber security and become a professional white hat hacker.

Leister is involved in SheTech as a student board representative, competed in website design event at the state FBLA conference, and has attended Utah State’s app camp and Brigham Young University’s cybersecurity camp. She recently graduated and wants to earn a degree in computer science so she can design software for Apple or Google.

Area Rising Star awards, for those who are starting out in their pursuit of studying computing, went to Kaitlyn Lowe, Brighton High; Ashley Hillstead, Beehive Academy; Hannah Braeger, Herriman High; Alayna Pinales, GTI; Madisen Homer, Murray High; and Grace Haglund, Olympus High.

Since 2007, nearly 17,000 students have received an Aspirations in Computing award and regional affiliate award programs are hosted in 79 locations nationwide by NCWIT member organizations—a national network of universities, companies, nonprofits, and government organizations working to increase the influence and meaningful participation of girls and women from every community.

Family bake sale turns into cookie shop in South Jordan

A

new family-owned cookie shop in South Jordan is serving up freshly baked treats with an evolving menu and unique flavors.

Local Cookie Co. opened on River Heights Drive in July. Todd Hunt, who owns the shop with his wife Chelsy, said that in the first few weeks of opening, they’ve been very

busy and are “so grateful for everybody and their support here in South Jordan.”

The menu can satisfy any sweet tooth, with four flavors changing each week. Featured flavors have included coconut key lime, coffee cake crumble, and, by popular demand, banana. The regular flavors always on the menu include chocolate chip, semisweet chocolate chip, sugar and a chocolate sandwich cookie.

“We wanted to make ourselves different,” Hunt said. “All of our ingredients are baked in fresh. We don’t have just a base cookie with toppings. We have all of our cookies with ingredients baked in.”

The origins of the shop demonstrate the family roots of Local Cookie Co. Hunt said their youngest daughter, Lainey, started a bake sale at about 10 years old to benefit different causes. The treats were soon in high demand.

“She picked a different charity each year she wanted to donate to,” he said. “We had tons of people come. She ended up baking more and more cookies, and she ended up selling out every year. “We’ve got some great team members doing social media for us. We’ve been able to see a lot of success from social media with Instagram, Facebook and Twitter,” he said.

The grand opening had to be delayed a bit due to equipment shipping delays, pushing the opening date from July 1 to July 15.

But Hunt said they’ve seen great support from the community of South Jordan since opening their doors.

“Our whole logo and branding is around that local feel. We’re not a big chain or franchise,” Hunt said. “We’re a local family and want to support the people around us… I love the local feel and to support other local businesses. That’s what makes South Jordan so great and makes our state great as well.”

He said they hope to expand Local Cookie Co. and are looking at other spaces.

“It’s been fun to do this as a family,” he said.

Local education foundations, businesses and community come together to support students

t was a more streamlined, but still people showed up, donating school supplies, clothing and other items for students in need.

It was the Tools for Schools, a fundraising drive that supports 11 area school districts as well as charter schools and the Utah Schools for the Deaf and Blind. Local businesses and individuals could drop off needed items Aug. 11–13 at the Shops at South Town, where Z104 radio personalities Dave and Deb, along with local school officials, accepted donations and sorted them to the needs

Cash donations were also accepted, including with a link to Jordan Credit Union, which disbursed the funds, and allowed those who wanted to participate to do so at a safe distance.

“Even with a pandemic, kids still need things, and we still want to do it,” said Denise Haycock, Canyons Education Foundation development officer. “We had four volunteers instead of 20 and plan to just sort donations by district, not stuffing backpacks or anything more.”

In years past, Haycock said they had “boxes and boxes of backpacks and food— probably thousands of backpacks last year” that they filled with the donated school supplies. That allowed Canyons to help “cover the bubble schools, those that aren’t covered

by United Way and their business partners but could still use the help.”

This year’s list not only includes pencils and pencil sharpeners but also the “accessory of the year”—masks.

“We take any kind—homemade, sewn, store bought,” she said. “Our risk management will approve them for the health and safety of our kids. Hand sanitizer also is something new on the list.”

Jordan Education Foundation Director Steven Hall said that filling principals’ pantries at the schools was something they requested.

“We have a lot of insecure kids and now, homeless, especially during COVID-19,” he said. “We have one in five children who are needing assistance.”

He said clothing, including underwear, as well as personal hygiene items, school supplies and backpacks rounded out his foundation’s wish list.

“Donations make an impact,” he said. “If it’s one backpack, then that’s one more backpack we have to give a child than we did before.

Every contribution makes a difference.” l

Celebration delayed, yet Jordan District administrator, teacher lauded with state PTA awards

here wasn’t a banquet, an awards ceremony or big celebration—but it may yet happen.

Jordan School District staff and faculty have reason to celebrate as they accumulated several top outstanding Utah PTA awards, including outstanding school administrator and outstanding educator.

Former South Jordan Middle School and current Hidden Valley Middle School Principal Shawn McLeod received the outstanding school administrator award.

“I had received an email that I was nominated, and being recognized like that, was great, but I didn’t know I won,” he said. “I’m excited, humbled and very honored.”

It was this winter, before the outbreak of COVID-19, when McLeod learned he would be opening the new middle school and leaving his post.

“I loved those students and parents and had a great PTA board there, but I’m looking forward to creating that culture here,” he said.

McLeod served those South Jordan Middle families for 16 years and Bingham students for three years before that as a teacher and administrator. He also taught one year at Copper Hills High in West Jordan. In addition to teaching, he also coached football, boys and girls basketball, baseball and softball.

Now in the midst of the pandemic, he said he is ready to open his new school.

“I did about 200 Zoom interviews, and I didn’t even know what Zoom was prior to all this,” McLeod said. “I’ve been communicating with our staff, teachers and talking

Mail-in ballots: Salt Lake County a model system says County Clerk

alt Lake County Clerk Sherrie Swensen and her team have been fielding many calls about mail-in ballots and the possibility of fraud. Despite the national news and concerns, Swensen wants people to know the system we’ve used for years is “safe, secure and efficient.”

“Since I took office in 1991, I’ve been working on making voting more accessible, and that includes mail-in ballots. Mail-in voting has been in the news, and I want people to know that in Salt Lake County we’ve been doing this for a long time, and it works,” said Swensen, who lives in Sandy.

“Random ballots cannot be produced by just anyone. The idea being circulated that ballots could be printed by Russians, or in living rooms by anyone, is ridiculous,” Swensen said.

Swensen’s longevity in her job has given her many years and many elections to develop mail-in ballots. She even designed the envelope with the required voter’s signature over the seal.

“We mail out a ballot to active registered voters. Every ballot mailed has a ballot ID number assigned, which correlates to the voter for whom it is ordered. If a voter asks to have another ballot sent because they didn’t receive it, or it was lost or ruined, the first ballot ordered for that voter is spoiled/canceled. The new ballot has a different ID number,” Swensen said.

Ballots are run through a series of human- and machine-operated steps. Each step ensures that signatures are matched, secrecy is maintained, the vote is counted and the computer-generated ID number recorded.

“If someone tried to prepare bogus ballot packets, they would not pass through our system and would not be accepted and counted.

stand the vote-by-mail process or do not want voters to have the convenience of voting by mail,” Swensen said.

Swensen also addressed the argument that the U.S. Postal Service could play a role in fraud or may slow down the process of tabulating votes.

“The cutbacks make me concerned.

[USPS has] always been very responsive and treated [the ballots] well. They care about the service they provide to us. We use postage paid envelopes. We can track things through the USPS. If there’s a concerted effort trying to make it harder for the [Postal Service], that’s a concern to me.

“And if people don’t feel comfortable sending their ballot through the mail, we have 20 drop boxes located throughout the valley,”

Swensen said.

The mail-in ballot program started as a permanent absentee option for seniors. “By 2013, we offered it to all registered voters, and only two cities opted out. In 2016, we conducted our first major elections by mail, and in 2017 all cities wanted to do it,” Swensen said.

Not only did the ballots work for security purposes, they increased voter turnout overall.

“We found that the percentage of turnout was so much better. In 2018, Salt Lake County had an 80% turnout rate for voters, and 88% of those were by mail,” Swensen said.

Voting in person is always an option, though with more social gathering restrictions in place this year, Swensen hopes as many people as possible use mail-in ballots.

Getting a ballot in the mail doesn’t mean that someone can’t vote in person. Even if you were to drop your ballot in a ballot box or send it in through the mail, if you vote in person in addition to that, you’ll only be counted once.

Swensen offers tours of the ballot process to anyone who’s interested. “We have had lawmakers, the Lt. Governor’s staff, the state auditor’s staff, media, political parties, candidates and even international visitors tour our processes. They come away impressed with our system and the security we have in place,” Swensen said.

Election Day is Tues., Nov. 3. The voting schedule is posted on www.got-vote.org or www.slco.org/clerk/elections. Vote by mail ballots will be mailed the week of Oct. 12. If you haven’t received yours by Oct. 20, call the Clerk’s office at 385-468-7400 or email them at got-vote@slco.org.

Swensen said that most issues with voting have to do with confusion, not fraud. Most of them can be cleared up ahead of time by visiting the website. Voters can make updates to their registration, and review instructions about things like who can sign your ballot or what to do if you accidentally put your ballot in your spouse’s envelope.

Poll workers are also still needed on Election Day. “We will be hiring poll workers and staff, so if people are interested, they can go to got-vote @slc.org. It’s a long day, and you need to have some technical skills. But you’re trained and paid, and if anyone’s interested we’d love to hear from them,” Swensen said.

The bottom line for Swensen: increase accessibility for everyone who’s eligible to vote.

“It’s extremely important to me that people get out to vote. For all the years I’ve been doing this, it was always about getting people to register—going to high schools, going to senior centers and other events.

“We want to make it simple for every person who’s eligible to register and cast a vote.

It shouldn’t just be left to those that have the means to figure it out. That’s what makes democracy work—being accessible to everyone who has the right to vote,” Swensen said. l

Not necessarily known for our patience, Americans are suffering from COVID fatigue. People can’t wait for things to return to a “new normal” like suddenly everything’s going to be ice cream sundaes and furry kittens. The way 2020 is going, the new normal will probably be kitten sundaes and furry ice cream.

Our world has changed, for better or worse, so now’s a good time to decide what we keep and what we toss. I’m all for tossing office jobs, dress pants and family reunions, while keeping pajamas-as-clothes, Uber Eats and virtual baby showers.

Let’s look at how the new normal is evolving, shall we?

Sports – Like a canary in a coal mine, team sports started up this summer with the hope of bringing entertainment to millions of sports-starved individuals, and millions of dollars to money-starved sports organizations.

It’s been a bit Hunger Games-ish

as teams drop out once their players contract COVID. Who’d have thought activities that include spitting, shouting, sweating and grunting could easily spread viruses?

School – Or as I like to call it, the Catch-22 Education Plan.

Parents and teachers are negotiating this real-life version of Oregon Trail where one wrong move can end up with junior high students being eaten by cannibals in Donner Pass. (Not the worse thing.) Here’s an idea: make the best decision for your family without judging everyone else.

Parenting – Let’s just agree that “screen time” rules have been suspended indefinitely, and it’s just fine if your toddler wears the same outfit for three days. Let’s also agree chicken nuggets are healthy, YouTube personalities are annoying, and everyone gets a blue ribbon for doing the best they can.

Work – Every introvert’s birthday wish was granted when they were told to work from home.

Turns out, with these new-fangled computers, lots of stuff can be done at home. Who knew? Maybe companies don’t need 50,000 square feet of office and ping-pong space, or outdoor meditation biospheres.

Date night – You’ve spent an inordinate amount of time with your significant other. You’ve worked from home together, prepared 5,459 meals together, rearranged closets, sock drawers and bathroom cabinets. Maybe the new normal will be individuals spending date night alone, so they don’t drive to the grocery store one day and end up with a new life in Cheyenne.

Weddings – Can we please standardize virtual weddings? That is all.

Holidays – Even with social distancing guidelines, summer holidays stayed the same as everyone went to national parks, held BBQs and spent the day sitting at the community pool with hundreds of other people. These holidays were

always followed by a COVID spike. I’m sure the fall/winter holidays will be no different because people are crappy at following CDC advisories.

The 2020 Election – It’s been 28 years since the 2016 election and this year’s election has disaster written all over it. Literally. Will there be mail-in ballots?

Russian interference? A loser who refuses to leave the White House?

Civil war? The return of our alien overlords? All of the above? My best guess for election aftermath is equivalent to shaking a Magic 8 Ball, and then lighting it on fire.

Mindset – Some people say COVID will help the world achieve a higher level of consciousness where people are more compassionate, kind understanding and . . . hahahaha . . . never mind. I don’t think we’re there yet. Time to go make a kitten sundae. l
