I

n Roald Dahl’s “Matilda, the Musical,” the little girl learns to advocate for herself and others to change their circumstances to make themselves happier. It’s a powerful lesson— and one that Elk Ridge Middle students are taking to heart.

Knowing this school year that audience capacity is capped at 25% for safety and health guidelines surrounding COVID-19, ninth grader Kelsey Brown, supported by fellow cast members, challenged that limitation; they wanted more school community members to come watch their school performances of “Matilda.”

“I thought, ‘wow, all this hard work will be basically for nothing’ if we couldn’t have more people watching our performances,” Kelsey said.

Armed with the knowledge that with more people being vaccinated and noticing “things are opening up more,” the 14-yearold began a petition to increase the audience capacity, citing research from University of California-San Francisco about mask wearing, detailing procedures for patron temperature checks and ensuring there would be spacing between family groups. Commencements look different, yet familiar during pandemic as schools determine ceremonies

A

ll the pomp and circumstance will be outside for the graduating seniors of Waterford School, Jordan High School, and Paradigm High to reduce the chance of COVID-19 transmission.

“We will be having our graduation ceremony outside on our Sandy campus this year, similar to how we did it last year, but we will likely be able to welcome more guests,” said Amanda Apple, Waterford’s director of marketing and communications. “We have not finalized all the details yet because we continue to experience a changing landscape of guidelines, but we plan to follow all Utah State Health Department and CDC guidelines to maintain all the testing, distancing, and masking protocols mandated.”

The Waterford ceremony for 73 seniors is planned for 7:30 p.m., Friday, June 4.

Senior orchestra members will perform as well as the vocal ensemble, Troubadours, and select third- through fifth-grade students will perform the song, “Irish Blessing.”

A senior speaker has yet to be named.

As of mid-April, Jordan High planned to host two graduation ceremonies, one on Wednesday, May 26 and the other, on Thursday, May 27, weather-permitting. Times to be determined.

“Our ceremony will be on the football field, as we have done some years ago,” Principal Wendy Dau said, adding that families will sign up for which night they prefer to attend. “This will allow families to have four tickets. If for some reason, the capacity of the stadium can go higher to say 50% , we will push the graduation to a single night on Wednesday. It will be as close to a traditional graduation ceremony as we can create.”

mencement will move to the school auditorium with dates and times to be determined.

The theme is “Dig the Moment.”

Graduation speakers include Valedictorian Kira Brooks; Salutatorian Megan DuVal; Senior Class President Davion Washington; Student body President Brooklyn Wagner; Graduate of Promise for Latinos in Action Vanessa Gonzalez Pliego; and Graduate of Promise for AVID – Neema Delphine; and seniors Michelle Dominguez and Taylor Tilby.

The commencement also will be livestreamed.

A free dinner-dance with fireworks

will be held for seniors that week; the date has yet to be set. Students attending will be COVID-19 tested before being allowed to participate, Dau said.

About 70 Paradigm High students are scheduled to graduate at the outdoor amphitheater in Thanksgiving Point’s Ashton Gardens at 6:30 p.m., Friday, May 28.

Tickets are required; each graduating senior will receive four complimentary tickets and families have the option to purchase up to six more at $12 each.

The ceremony also will be livestreamed on Paradigm’s YouTube channel. Graduation speakers will be selected in May.

American Heritage of South Jordan will celebrate nine seniors at its graduation at 6 p.m., Wednesday, May 26 at The Azalea in Daybreak in South Jordan. Tickets are not required.

To the east, Juan Diego Catholic High plans to hold its traditional ceremony on Saturday, May 29. Attendance is by ticket only.

In Midvale, Hillcrest High will hold its commencement at 9 a.m., Wednesday, May 26. Other details haven’t been announced.

Jordan Valley School families are welcome to celebrate the four 2021 and eight 2020 graduates at its commencement exercises on 10 a.m., Friday, May 21 in Midvale Middle School’s auditorium.

Nearby at Cottonwood High, 338 graduating seniors voted to hold a traditional commencement together, which will be held at 1 p.m., Thursday, June 3 in the school auditorium. Seniors will be able to invite up to five guests and tickets will be distributed when students pick up their caps and gowns.

The program will include two senior speakers, selected following the May 13 auditions, as well as the valedictorian, salutatorian, senior class president and the student body president. Live music will be provided by the Madrigals and the combined orchestra and band.

The evening of graduation, Cottonwood’s PTSA graduation night committee will hold “Grad Night at All Star Bowling” in West Valley City. Graduates will be bussed at 10 p.m. and the bus will return at 3 a.m., Friday, June 4.

As of press deadline, several other area high school administrators were still determining commencement plans. l

Local business owner baking up mini pies for the masses

L

ongtime South Jordan residents and serial entrepreneurs Carol and Rick Timmons have brought a “little slice of heaven” to their community.

Flake Pie Company, located at the South Jordan Town Center, has brought a unique rendition to an all-American dessert. After 16 years in the restaurant industry, Carol and Rick, along with investors, recognized that the individually sized pies could hold their own against the plethora of desserts available to Salt Lake County residents.

“With the individual sized pies, it’s something you can order for yourself, or give as a gift; it’s a nice, sweet treat in a small portion,” she said.

Flake Pie Co. opened its doors in November of 2020 and has been baking nonstop since that first day, with the request for mini pies, or hand sized pies, heightened on weekends and holidays. Even amid the pandemic, and not knowing what to expect, Timmons admitted that opening the shop happened very naturally, with every aspect falling into place from the idea, to the location.

“We thought, “Why not? Everyone needs a little joy in their lives,’” she said.

The shop boasts sweet classic flavors such as “Apple of My Pie” that holds true to the traditional apple pie filling in a flaky crust but in a

more manageable portion, or “Sweet Child O’ Lime,” which has a graham cracker crust and a sweet, yet tart, key lime filling.

“I think everybody is a believer in my concept of pie every day, not just for special occasions,” she said.

As word spread, customers began to inquire about savory pie filling as well. After spending many years abroad, Timmons knew that a take on the meat pies found in countries such as New Zealand would be successful.

With the same concept of the mini pies’ there are flavors such as “Hey Pig Spender” a flaky crust filled with Kansas City barbecue pulled pork, roasted corn, beans and melted cheese, as well as the pie that is a take on a classic comfort food, “Boom Chicka Licka,” chicken and veggies rolled together in a gravy with cheesy potatoes mixed in.

“Some of the flavors we created on demand,” she said.

Although not classically trained as a pastry chef, Timmons has managed to turn her hobby of making delicious treats into a successful profession. Even with the “pie for any occasion” philosophy, the shop also serves “flakies” a gourmet version of a toaster pastry, which Carol has been perfecting for her family for many years in addition to the ever so delicate Pots de Crème, a French inspired

As much time and hard work that Timmons dedicates to the shop and various other business ventures, she enjoys working with different members of the community. With her three children working alongside her, overseeing all the marketing needs of Flake from pho-

tography to social media, Timmons attributes hard work and kindness as being the reasons for her success in life and business.

The idea is simple: pie every day. l

Kelsey then went to the Jordan Board of Education meeting to present her cause.

“I was nervous, but knew I had to convince the school board we deserved to show the world our talent,” she said. “Performing for a nearly empty theater really lowers morale and makes all our hard work seem worthless.”

After speaking for a few minutes, Kelsey left to watch the rest of the meeting online.

“After two hours of watching from my computer, they ultimately decided to allow up to 75% capacity since the 25% before was just a recommendation from the Salt Lake Health Department, not a rule they had to follow,” she said. “I was so excited; I was watching with others (from the cast) over FaceTime, and we screamed and cried and laughed. It exploded and spread around like wildfire that we did it.”

Jordan Board of Education President Tracy Miller said the vote to increase up to 75% in live performances districtwide was decided after talking to the health department.

She said following the CDC guidelines and Salt Lake’s transmission level from high to moderate also played a factor into the board’s decision.

Miller, who said the board had heard from others also wanting the restrictions loosened, said board members opted to be cautious not to increase to 100% to ensure spacing between families and that school administrators have the final decision to increase the capacity.

“She did a great job presenting it. I love to see young students be actively involved in advocating in the community,” Miller said, adding that she knew other students were watching as she received a student email in support of Kelsey.

Elk Ridge Principal Curtis Jenson said he had heard about the petition and felt it was a good way to gauge interest in the issue.

“It’s a good experience for kids to voice their opinions,” he said about the student-led campaign. “Any time students can advocate in the right way, it’s a good thing. I think the timing was right for students to pitch it. It was smart and well-reasoned.”

Jenson and theater director Rebecca Schmidt set “Matilda” at 70% capacity, which works well with the spacing in the auditorium.

Schmidt said that after limiting the cast to 80 from the 130 who auditioned because of needing to maintain spacing during rehearsals, the group has pushed forward through the COVID-19 guidelines. She had 50 students in two stage tech classes concentrating on sets and about 35 on stage crew who afterschool with lights and sound. Parents have helped additionally with sets and costumes.

Joining Schmidt is choreographer Alicia Giove; music director Dave Martin; program and T-shirt designer and organizer Megan Rees; stage manager ninth grader Dallin Greisemeyer; and one of several student directors, 10th grader MJ Stowell.

Schmidt said she chose “Matilda” because she could showcase a lot of her talented students in leads as well as having students learn Matilda’s message of changing her story, not waiting to have something happen.

“They really took the message about change and took it to heart,” Schmidt said about the increased patron capacity. “The kids fully made it happen. I don’t know that many students who have ever watched a board meeting before.”

Kelsey said they also did it for Schmidt.

“We wanted to do it for our teacher,” she said. “She works so hard, and when we told her about the board’s decision, she was so happy. It was a proud moment.”

Kelsey plays intimidating Big Kid #4 in the play and has two lines. And even though she’s not the lead, she has learned a lot from theater.

“It gives me a chance to show how I am, stand on stage and shine,” she said. “I’ve learned what I’m made of—and I guess that I was able to show that confidence in speaking and my ability when I talked to the board to get my point across for our cast.”

Eighth grader Claire Burnham, who plays Matilda’s friend Lavender in the play and helped circulate the petition, remembers

watching the school board’s decision.

“I lost my mind and ran around the house doing victory laps when the board announced increased capacity to 75%,” she said. “Kelsey was very persuasive and very logically sound.

I was amazed that they listened to her, to us.

It is reminiscent of the play where a group of kids were unhappy and changed their situation; we did the same thing. It was an incredible experience to make a difference. We lived the play, and now we can perform the play.” l

South Jordan City returns to regular hours and in-person council meetings

A

fter more than a year of online city council meetings and greatly reduced office hours, things are finally starting to return to a semblance of normal for South Jordan’s city government.

Starting this May, South Jordan’s government buildings will be returning to their normal schedules, after months of operating only during dramatically reduced hours. Additionally, city council meetings will now once again be held in person at South Jordan City Hall, rather than exclusively by Zoom.

On April 20, 2021, the South Jordan City Council convened for its first in-person meeting since everything closed down and went virtual last March. The jovial mood was evident even on recording; everybody was plainly happy to see each other.

“Welcome! To everyone! In person!”

South Jordan Mayor Dawn Ramsey an-

nounced. “We are starting a couple minutes late, because we’ve all been chatting and catching up and going ‘Hey, I remember you!’ It’s really nice to see you.”

Overall, it was a much less formal council meeting than usual. There was business, of course; there was a tentative budget hearing, and Ramsey met with the local chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution to thank and recognize them for their service to the community, which this year included making lunches for first responders and handmade masks for people in need. But in addition to the business, there were jokes, and laughter, and frequent breakaways into side conversations, or discussions of dinner plans— the rustlings of people excited to, with the arrival of vaccines, finally resume doing all those things people like to do when they’re not restricted by quarantine and screens. l

South Jordan hosts spring spectacular drive-thru for residents

n April 3, cars flooded the South Jordan Equestrian Park grounds from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. to drive through the Spring Spectacular, hosted by the City of South Jordan and the South Jordan Arts Council. Due to COVID-19, this year’s Spring Spectacular was held as a drive-thru to ensure safe distancing of participants and entertainers.

In what proved to be a true community affair, and despite the change from years previous, parents drove through at a slow pace as children stood through sun roofs and waved out the windows to entertainers. Because the event was held a day before Easter, an Easter bunny was in attendance, waving to the onlookers and dancing along to the music playing on the loud speaker. Drivers by waved to princesses such as Ariel, Jasmine Rapunzel, Merida, Sleeping Beauty and Belle.

As a seasonal part of the entertainment, stilt walkers wandered about dressed as aspen trees and butterflies and waved at participants. Also at the event was a small petting zoo featuring animals such as Kit the donkey, Wilbur the pig and Gary the alpaca, all brought from Taylor’s Travelling Troupe in Cedar Hills.

“An activity like this gets the kids out of the house,” said Jordan Cassie, a South Jordan resident, who brought her family to join in the fun. “We think these activities are very important.”

South Jordan Mayor Dawn Ramsey joined in the festivity and camaraderie as she greeted families that drove through.

“I have had the privilege of attending every single city event while serving as mayor, and I appreciate each opportunity to

spend time with our residents, even if we are waving through car windows,” she said.

Despite health and safety restrictions from the current pandemic, South Jordan Special Events Coordinator Natalie Domino said she wanted residents to have an experience despite COVID-19. The city held similar drive-thru events in 2020 with the Summerfest in June and Light the Night in December.

“City staff has done an amazing job of thinking outside the box by helping us find ways to engage as a community,” Ramsey said.

The effort and creativity behind the Spring Spectacular was not lost on local residents and residents from neighboring towns.

“An event like this is amazing,” said Nayber Barrientos, who brought his family from Sandy to help get into the spirit of the season. “In this pandemic, it’s nice to have something different. We appreciate it so much.”

Even though this year’s Easter bunny was unable to personally hand out treats, and no egg hunts were permitted, youth volunteers helped to pass out bags of Easter eggs to cars before exiting the event. Nethra Suresh, a sophomore at Bingham High School, along with fellow Bingham High junior John Evershed, who are members of the South Jordan Youth Council, helped out.

South Jordan officials look forward to sponsoring in-person events toward the end of the year as permitted by county regulations.

The great Utah shakeout drill helps prepare for the next earthquake

T

he month of April was earthquake preparedness month in Utah and many residents participated in the Great Utah Shakeout on April 15, an earthquake preparedness drill that emphasized the “drop, cover and hold on” protocol. This year marks the tenth year of the great Utah shakeout being held in Utah.

Schools around South Jordan participated in the great shakeout drill. Among them was Monte Vista Elementary with approximately 850 students, where Principal Nanette Ririe along with an on-campus safety committee, were able to make an authentic plan about how their school would approach this year’s earthquake drill.

“We use the great shakeout model of drop, cover and hold on,” Ririe said. “It’s nice that we were able to practice this year.”

Like a lot of schools in the surrounding area, classrooms at Monte Vista have carts of emergency supplies, mainly water and snacks, that get taken out with the students to a secure location, should they need to evacuate the classroom in an emergency situation.

Also participating in the Great Shakeout were students at Bingham High School. With a student body of approximately 2,500 students, Assistant Principal Art Ericson said it was important to establish a pattern of safety.

“We want to first and foremost practice safety,” Ericson said. “We want to be able to respond in a certain way.”

With the help of on campus resource officer, and in coordination with the South Jordan police, staff at Bingham were able to coordinate a safe physical evacuation for students.

South Jordan-based company Ultradent, which manufactures high-quality dental products in more than 120 countries, participated in the great shakeout for the last five years. Employees are encouraged to drop, cover and hold on, whether working from home or working inside the offices. Ultradent participated in a companywide earthquake drill on April 29.

“Safety is always a priority for us,” said Daniel Lewis, public relations manager.

According to Utah Division of Emergency Management Public Information Officer Wade Mathews, the drill itself has traditionally been held on the third Thursday of April as was designated by former Gov. Gary Herbert; however, residents are encouraged to practice earthquakes drills at a date and time that works for them.

“The whole purpose of the Great Utah Shakeout is to conduct an earthquake protective action drill or drop, cover and hold on,” Mathews said.

There are approximately 700 to 800 earthquakes in Utah a year, according to Mathews, most of which are too small to be felt and occur in unpopulated areas. However, in March of 2020, many residents around

Because science is unable to reliably predict when the next earthquake will occur, residents are encouraged to educate themselves on how best to prepare.

Jenson said that South Jordan City planners have been in good communication and planning with Jordan School District, sharing the expected changes. The walking bridge at the intersection also is expected to be moved, but safe walking routes are expected to be shared with the community.

In addition to the main entrance to Elk Ridge Middle School, there is an alternative entrance in the back of the school through the neighborhood.

“As an option, parents could drop kids off a block away to avoid congestion,” he suggested.

Construction will reduce speeds to 45 mph and is expected to be ongoing both day and night, according to the UDOT website. l

In early May, the Utah Department of Transportation is planning to close 10400 South traveling across Bangerter Highway as crews work on the construction of an underpass and on- and off-ramps. It will remain closed through late 2021.

“They have told us that traffic will still be allowed to turn left as we travel east on 10400 South, and we may have two left-hand lanes, but it could directly impact our traffic during drop-off and pick-up times,” Elk Ridge Principal Curtis Jenson said. “We may have some backup in our parking lot.”

Alternately, west bound traffic on 9800 South will only be able to turn right or south onto Bangerter Highway. This could impact Elk Meadows Elementary families as they arrive and depart school.

Something good from the pandemic: Increased work flexibility for South Jordan employees

hough city buildings are returning to their pre-pandemic schedules and life is finally beginning to return to something like normal, teleworking is here to stay for many South Jordan city employees. Employees will be allowed to work from home as often as three days a week, if they want to.

“While the pandemic has been hard for everyone, I am excited that something clearly helpful and welcomed by our employees came out of it,” said Teresa Cook, South Jordan’s human resources director.

Before making the decision, South Jordan’s HR department sent out a survey to 134 employees, asking about how they liked remote work and how it was affecting their productivity. The enthusiasm was remarkable: the survey had one of the highest and fastest participation rates Cook has ever seen, with 129 of the 134 employees responding, and all but five of those responses being returned in just four days.

The survey found that 79% of remote employees like remote work at least a moderate amount, with 58% liking it a great deal. Another 47% reported improved work quality, while the remaining 53% reported the same level of work quality as onsite. These self-reported figures were backed up by supervisors, too: 67% of supervisors in all seven city departments reported that employees were equally or more productive working remotely as they had been when working in person.

“The survey’s purpose was not only to get a pulse of our remote employees’ experience but also was key in helping us iron out some of the bugs with technology and understanding what tools employees needed to be do their jobs more effectively,” Cook said.

Of course, not all city employees are eligible for remote work; some jobs just have to be done in person. Even among eligible employees, the amount of allowable remote work varies, both by department and by individual job description. Currently, nobody is working remotely more than three days a week, but Cook indicated that in the future some jobs may be designated as full-time remote positions, which would save on costs and office space.

“This new normal allows for more flexibility in what’s allowable for employees in terms of work,” Cook said. “For example, an employee that works remotely may request to work from home where in the past they may have asked for time off, such as when they need to be home to let repair workers inside their home or if they have a sick child that needs to stay home from school. Managers have those extra tools now to help employees when there are ‘snow days’ or if they feel sick to allow them to stay home and work if they wish instead of losing that productivity completely.”

South Jordan leaders have allowed city employees to work remotely in some capacity since 2014, but the program was far less developed then, and it was rarely used.

“Now that it’s more flexible and robust; there is a marked increase of interest in the program, and we think it’s around to stay,” Cook said.

According to Cook, South Jordan City Manager Gary Whatcott started pushing to expand the city’s remote work program back in 2019, before the pandemic had hit Utah. Both elected officials and city staff were supportive of this idea, which gave the city a head start on perfecting its work-from-home strategy.

Tari DeGraaff, South Jordan’s risk analyst, was already part of this pre-pandemic telecommuting pilot program, in which she worked from home one day a week.

“It was a very smooth transition for me as the pandemic escalated and our offices closed,” she said. “We have an awesome IT department who worked hard to make sure all our employees had the equipment and network access needed. Virtual meetings were rare before the pandemic, but now they have become a natural part of work. Technology keeps improving, and I’m excited to see where it goes. I understand not all positions have the capability to telework, but I feel incredibly fortunate to have the option to continue to telework. I appreciate the support from administration in supporting a home and work life balance. As an employee it makes me feel valued and trusted.” l

But it wasn’t organized by the district or the high school, or even a volunteer organization. It was an idea brought to life by Kimmie del Andrae, a Realtor and South Jordan resident.

Del Andrae is used to giving her time to volunteer efforts. She’s volunteered frequently at animal shelters, Sagewood Retirement Community, Big Brothers Big Sisters and the Look Good Feel Better program, which benefits women undergoing cancer treatment.

“I fill my time,” she said. “I’m an empty nester.”

A few years ago, Del Andrae posted on Facebook a picture of her daughter, then a student at Bingham High, dressed and ready for her prom. One of Del Andrae’s real estate clients, a parent of an autistic child, commented on how pretty the photo was. That comment was Del Andrae’s inspiration.

“I thought, ‘Oh my god, [my client’s child] will never have a prom,” she said.

She would likely never experience picking out a dress, wearing a corsage or taking photos with a date. “I asked my daughter if the special needs kid came to prom. She said, ‘Maybe one or two.’”

Del Andrae approached Bingham’s administration with the idea of hosting a special needs prom, but “they gave a lot of pushback.” She was told there was no need for a separate event because the special needs students were invited to the school’s general prom. “They’re invited, but just because they’re invited doesn’t mean they come,” Del Andrae said.

So she spoke to Bingham’s life skills teacher, Lexie Waite, about whether she thought a special needs prom was needed.

(Life skills is a self-contained classroom within the school for individuals with special needs.) Waite thought it was a great idea. Four years earlier, in Waite’s first year of teaching, she and other life skills teachers in the district had talked about the idea of organizing a special needs prom, but it never came together.

“We serve a lot of students with disabilities who get overstimulated or have more aggressive behaviors,” Waite said.

“Being at a whole-school prom isn’t always well suited for them. But they still need the chance to have a social outlet. ” So Del Andrae began putting the event together on her own dime. “I just threw it together,” she said of the 2019 event. Waite publicized the event among her students, distributed invitations, and coordinated with the life skills teachers at the district’s other schools. The prom experience was complete with boutonnieres, corsages, and a DJ. Attendees even had the option to come early and get their hair and makeup done by Del Andrae’s daughter and her friends.

A lot of the parents stayed throughout the evening. “Many of them came up to me, thanking me. One dad was trying all night to give me a hundred dollars,” Del Andrae remembered, laughing.

Waite heard from several parents who were very appreciative. They never felt comfortable having their child go to the school’s prom. “It was amazing for them to see their child who’s normally aggressive or angry have such a fun night,” Del Andrae said. “And for parents to realize their child is able to participate in social activities and have social outlets.

I didn’t want the night to end.”

Aside from the extra supervision, she said there was no difference between the experience of students at the special needs prom and the school’s general prom. “It’s just a group of their peers,” she said. “They feel more comfortable in their own skin.”

Though the event was canceled in 2020, it will proceed in 2021 with a few precautions in place. Attendees will have to show either the results of a negative COVID test within the last 24 hours or a vaccination card.

Waite emphasized that the prom has additional benefits for students as well. For one, it allows them to see their classmates and friends from other schools they’ve attended, since “individuals with severe disabilities often get switched from school to school frequently when they are in elementary school and middle school.”

This year, in light of the Jordan District’s decision to discontinue the life skills classes at Herriman and Bingham high schools, Waite added that the prom would allow students in those classes to meet future classmates and “ease the transition.”

(In early April, Jordan District announced that Herriman special needs students would be bussed to Mountain Ridge while Bingham’s could attend Riverton or West Jordan. On April 16, the decision was reversed.)

Del Andrae hopes even more kids will attend the prom this year than in 2019, including students outside of Jordan District.

South Jordan City and Ivory Homes partnership yields city’s first subsidized workforce housing development

n April 29, South Jordan unveiled its first-ever subsidized workforce housing development, built in partnership with Ivory Homes.

The Bingham Court development, located at 11400 South and 1300 West, has nine townhomes reserved especially for workers like city employees, police officers and school teachers. Each of those nine lots is subsidized by the city’s redevelopment funds, and will be sold for $100,000 below market value. The homes are exclusively available to workers who make 80% or less of the region’s median income, with preference given to those in the categories listed above.

The idea is clearly popular. Five of the nine lots are already spoken for as of April 22, and both South Jordan and Ivory Homes representatives are confident that the remaining four will sell quickly. Officials from both entities have confirmed that further workforce housing partnerships between South Jordan and Ivory Homes are already in the works.

Of course, because the market is so hot, and the lots are so subsidized, the workforce homes are deed restricted to prevent homebuyers from abusing the system and flipping the houses.

“What we didn’t want to do is have somebody buy one and then just turn around sell it and, you know, make $100,000 immediately. That wouldn’t be a wise use of taxpayer money,” said Brian Preece, South Jordan’s Director of Commerce. “So there’ll be the deed restriction, so that when they sell the home, the longer they live in it, the more they can earn.

But it will still have to be sold to someone else that meets those same income requirements.”

Even subsidized, the townhomes are still far from cheap. Homes in Bingham Court start at $480,000, so even with the $100,000 subsidy, buyers are still on the hook for $380,000. But for a home in South Jordan, that’s as good as it gets in this market.

Ivory Homes has done a lot of work in affordable workforce housing before, but trying to build something affordable in such a desirable location—not only in a popular part of the insanely fast-growing Salt Lake County, but also along a main transportation corridor—presented a unique challenge.

“The bulk of our workforce housing program has been, ‘Let’s see if we can build the most affordable home on the

most affordable lot,’” said Kevin Carlson, who leads Ivory Homes’ workforce housing program. “When you get into South Jordan, you know, we’re not really in the outskirts anymore, like a lot of our affordable product out in Eagle Mountain or Stansbury Park or some of these areas. In South Jordan, it’s really tough.”

“To pull that off in a city like South Jordan, that’s right in the heart of Salt Lake County, it’s really taken a lot of outside the box thinking, and South Jordan has been great at contributing to that,” said Michael Parker, Ivory Homes’ vice president of public affairs. “They have been in the game the whole time, pushing us to move quicker, think bigger.”

According to Parker, a lot of rezoning and general plan updates were necessary to make this project work, but South Jordan officials in general and Mayor Dawn Ramsey in particular were proactive about making the necessary changes. Parker looks forward to working with city officials on more developments like this one in the future.

“To have a city that’s that proactive about solving this problem is a big game changer, because oftentimes, we feel like we’re pushing or pulling a city along with us,” Parker said. “South Jordan, to their credit, and the mayor, to her credit, have been true partners and leaders. They really led efforts on the general plan and zoning update to allow for the density that’s on the site. And they worked with us to talk with the proximate neighbors to make sure we did that in a way that blends into the neighborhood in a really strategic way.”

Even though the price tag is still a little daunting, the $100,000 subsidies have put home ownership within reach for people that otherwise would have had to wait a very long time to have a place of their own. Joshua Timothy, who works as a city communications specialist, is one such person.

“Buying a workforce home at a subsidized rate is a huge blessing to our family,” he said. “We would not be able to buy a home for our growing family for many more years without the program that Ivory Homes and the city has put into place. Being able to live, play and work in the same community is something that we have always wanted for our children.”

According to Timothy, it’s not just the monetary help that put this home within reach for his family. The simple fact that the home was reserved for workforce

members removed a lot of uncertainty all on its own.

“Every home on the market has probably around 10 to 100 interested buyers,” he said. “First-time homebuyers will often get bid out by others that make cash offers well above asking price. Buying a subsidized workforce home is often still competitive with waitlists, but it is a lot less stressful than other homes on the market. We didn’t have to worry about someone coming in with cash and making a larger offer.”

It seems evident that workforce housing is an important and worthy place for South Jordan to put its redevelopment funds. In an economy where house prices rise faster than workers can save for them, becoming a homeowner often seems like an impossible dream. The idea behind Bingham Court and developments like it brings that dream a little closer to reality.

“It really does help us and our families,” Timothy said. “It’s a great investment for the city, school districts and other essential worker employers to have employees that live close by, dedicated to serve the communities in which they live.” l

AAI continues to serve fresh homemade meals during pandemic

efore COVID-19, American Academy of Innovation student Quade Flanders raved about his school’s food.

“It’s delicious; everything is homemade,” he said in early 2020.

As the pandemic hit, disrupting supply chains, prices have skyrocketed, including food that was once purchased in smaller amounts now needing to be bought by the case or the foil used to individually wrap food that is being served.

However, that hasn’t changed the fresh meals made from scratch by chef and food service director David Kimball and the AAI staff.

Thanks to No Kid Hungry, more than $33,000 in grant funding coming from stimulus money was earmarked to feed AAI students during the 2021 calendar year.

“This school year looks different than any we’ve seen before, but one thing remains the same: kids rely on us not just for their education but also for nutritious meals,” Kimball said. “This grant from No Kid Hungry will help ensure that we can continue to provide our students with the nutrition they need to learn, while also helping their families make ends meet during this difficult time.”

During the ongoing pandemic, the grant is used to offset the increased costs of providing meals to students, Kimball said.

“With COVID, all the packaging [prices] just went through the roof,” he said, adding that many schools use Styrofoam to package food for students. “We’re using aluminum; we’re being able to provide them with a hot meal, not a warm meal.”

That packaging also keeps the food more fresh, such as his roasted children breast, homemade mashed potatoes and green beans he recently served for lunch, plus its more environmentally friendly, he added.

It just isn’t the increased funds for packaging but also for food service items such as rubber gloves.

“I used to get a case of 1,000 for about $53,” Kimball said. “Now it’s $156. Everything has shot up.”

To keep up with the need to individually wrap items, an extra staff member was hired from the grant money to help in the kitchen.

“Basically, the grant covers the costs incurred with COVID,” he said.

Along with the grant, all meals to stu-

dents are provided for free, so AAI is serving 40 to 50 more students per meal.

While typically AAI provides students with options for lunches or breakfasts, this year, those have decreased to typically three. There still are four types of sandwiches, including two—ham and cheddar or turkey and provolone—that are prepared fresh. There is a salad option or the hot meal of the day, such his Grandma Style Pizza, with homemade dough and sauce he was prepping to serve. All meals–lunch and breakfast—come with fresh fruit. Breakfasts offer choices from blueberry muffins and banana bread to cereal and milk.

“The demand has gone crazy for a lot of prepared items,” he said. “We try to stay

away from that as much as possible and do everything; most of our proteins are done from scratch. [It’s a] personal preference, [it] tastes better [and the] chicken’s not dry. It would be healthier because when you buy it, all the prepared stuff is either injected with sodium, water or different kinds of filler.”

Kimball, who has been a chef for 25 years and currently has a side mobile woodfire pizza business, said typically funds from No Kid Hungry serve Title I schools, but it was expanded this year as more students are in need during the pandemic as many families have lost jobs, so students rely more on school meals. He estimated about 50 students qualify for free or reduced lunch at AAI. l

Bingham thespians to present ‘A New World,’ ‘Hamlet, the Film’

A

s the school year comes to an end, Bingham High theater students aren’t ready to leave their stage yet.

In early May, the 22-member musical theatre class will perform “A New World” at 7 p.m., May 4–6 as a “cabaret-style review,” said director Brittany Andersen, a first-year Bingham High theater teacher.

The theme of the show is the “world” within and beyond high school.

“Using pieces of music from multiple musicals and original monologues written by students; scenes from different plays, musicals or movies; and some original scripting I have written, the show gives a heartwarming and comedic look at the average ‘teenage life,’” she said.

Performances will be in the Copper Pit at Bingham High, 2160 South Jordan Parkway.

On May 20–21, seniors will be highlighting the stage, directing 10- to 20-minute plays ranging from comedy to tragedy. Three Theatre 4 students also are writing and directing their own plays.

To wrap up the year, at 7 p.m., May 27– 28, the yearlong production of “Hamlet, the Film” will be aired in the Copper Pit. Filming began in the fall with the plan to shoot scenes around students’ possible quarantining after possible exposure to COVID-19.

Instead, the school was shut down multiple times, which delayed the process—then it was put on pause to allow students to concentrate on the school musical, said director Jason Purdie, who also is new at Bingham High.

“We’re rehearsing scenes that we still have to shoot,” he said in early April, anticipating those to be done by early May. “We got back into it in mid-March. For the most part, the students are really excited that this is going to happen because we weren’t sure after seeing how things went this fall.”

Andersen said that she is excited to see the film platform. “’Hamlet’ is going to be awesome,” she said. “Mr. Purdie is a genius with Shakespeare, and an experienced filmmaker. I was so excited when he decided to shift to the film platform for the ‘fall play.’”

The pandemic also caused them to switch musicals to “Mamma Mia!” and after a postponement because of COVID-19, the show took the stage in early March, directed by Andersen.

Purdie, who was the technical director, said he was amazed.

“There was a great turnout, and the audience just loved it,” he said. “I was blown away at what she (Andersen) did with the show, and the kids loved it and her. It was a huge success.”

Andersen said the decision to change show to “Mamma Mia!” was for the “fun aspect of the show.” [Jason] Purdie and I both love ABBA music, and we decided it would be

the best fit for our kids and community,” she said, adding that some of the narrative was edited for language and suggestive tones to make it more appropriate.

Early in rehearsals, the cast of about 100 students was divided, with some working on choreography with Andersen and others rehearsing music under music director Andrea Chapman.

“Kids always wore their masks during rehearsals, but it was when we got closer to opening and were doing costume runs with the cast backstage that students wore their masks less and less, which caused the inevitable COVID-19 outbreak in our cast,” she said.

“Two days before opening I had three cast members report they tested positive, then with contact-tracing and more reports of positive cases, I decided to postpone opening for two weeks.”

With other performances slated for the stage, it required the set to be torn down, rebuilt and torn down a second time on a tight schedule.

“It was madness, but totally worth it,” Andersen said. “The energy and excitement of the cast and audience made the ‘restricted size’ seem like it was a sold-out house. The best part, for me, has been to give these kids such a joyful, powerful experience. The most com-

ments I received were thank-yous for giving these students a normal experience this school year. There was so much joy spilling off of that stage and spreading throughout the audience, I couldn’t help, but just be proud and honored that this is my job—and these are the memories I get to help make for these kids.”

A bittersweet moment, however, was that for one of the leads tested positive during the new performance dates, and Andersen realized she had forgotten to cast an understudy for him.

“So, I had a kid step in Friday morning, around 10 a.m., and learn the role,” she said.

“He rehearsed all day, and [it] was memorized and ready to perform that evening. I’m telling you, these kids are amazing.”

That show launched them right into their one-act “Fortress,” which was their competition piece at region, and they won first place. Even so, the ensemble didn’t avoid COVID-19, as two students had to sit out for exposure, so parts were doubled up among the 10 remaining cast members.

“I love the show; it’s a great ensemble piece with moving parts of the story,” said Purdie, who directed it and put on an evening show for family and friends about how a 9-year-old boy learns he was adopted and retreats into his own world to model his life after a famous fictional orphan—Superman.

In addition, Bingham students qualified in every individual event they competed in at region bringing home third place overall.

In late April, about 35 Miners will compete at state.

“That about wraps it up,” Purdie said.

“It’s been quite the year.” l

Moms are good for all kinds of things; homemade cookies, clean underwear, and guilt, just to name a few. Although each mom is different, we often feel we’re doing everything wrong when it comes to raising children. Do we back off, step in, offer advice, stay silent, help them succeed, let them fail?

We’re never sure and we’re usually winging it, just doing the best we can.

It reminds me of when my brother knocked the wind out of himself by being stupid. Mom thought he was choking and performed the Heimlich. He couldn’t breathe for two hours. She did the best she could with the information she had.

I love mom but she wasn’t perfect.

She cheated at Skip-Bo, had no patience with stupidity, and hated animals with a passion. When she got remarried and moved to a ranch in North Carolina, we found it a unique and hilarious karma. Her emails to me often started with, “Well, I kicked the rooster again today.”

Mom might have loathed poultry, but when the wind snapped her beautiful globe willow tree in half, she mourned it like a family member. Every spring, mom’s garden would bloom with color. She loved ladybugs and butterflies. She’d also hand my daughters a saltshaker and tell them to feed the snails.

doubted she loved us. She wasn’t just a mama bear; she was a mama velociraptor when it came to defending her kids.

Mom once told me her children were her inspiration. An inspiration to move across the country.

As a final joke, mom requested each of her children to speak at her funeral. I considered digging up the Beowulf puppets and delivering her eulogy via Grendel, the monstrous creature doomed to wander the earth.

She would have loved it.

Mom worked as a teacher’s aide at an elementary school before she died. (I don’t think the two are connected, but it was an elementary school.) At the funeral, her coworkers told me what a great woman she was. I already knew that.

We often put the dead on a pedestal (which is dangerous because they can roll off and fall on people). But mom wouldn’t want to be remembered as being a perfect person who never messed up, got angry, felt alone, burned dinner, swore, failed, tried again, and again, and again.

If you’re a mom on Mother’s Day this year, that’s the message for you. You were never meant to get everything right. You don’t need to achieve perfection. It isn’t even possible. Just embrace your wonderful messiness.

My mom was better than perfect. She was human.

n Roald Dahl’s “Matilda, the Musical,” the little girl learns to advocate for herself and others to change their circumstances to make themselves happier. It’s a powerful lesson— and one that Elk Ridge Middle students are taking to heart.

Knowing this school year that audience capacity is capped at 25% for safety and health guidelines surrounding COVID-19, ninth grader Kelsey Brown, supported by fellow cast members, challenged that limitation; they wanted more school community members to come watch their school performances of “Matilda.”

“I thought, ‘wow, all this hard work will be basically for nothing’ if we couldn’t have more people watching our performances,” Kelsey said.

Armed with the knowledge that with more people being vaccinated and noticing “things are opening up more,” the 14-yearold began a petition to increase the audience capacity, citing research from University of California-San Francisco about mask wearing, detailing procedures for patron temperature checks and ensuring there would be spacing between family groups.
