ibraries have evolved from just book-lending to become places of community connection, and the new Daybreak Library takes that even a step further. With its state-of-the-art features and net-zero carbon footprint, the library accurately represents the transit-oriented, pedestrian-friendly community of Daybreak.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony on April 30 celebrated the new library with local leaders, Salt Lake County officials and community members in attendance. The 28,000 square-foot building includes a rooftop patio, an outdoor plaza and amphitheater, and thousands of books.

Robin Chalhoub, Associate Director of Community Services for Salt Lake County, is excited to invite Daybreak residents to the library. “We continue to offer expanded services across the county,” she said. “We have the incredible resources the library is known for and this will be a unique place for the Daybreak community.”

Although construction slowed down during COVID and supply-chain issues hindered progress, the finished library reflects the area’s New Urbanism focus. With easy access to TRAX services, and with homes and shopping areas nearby, patrons can ride, bike or walk to the library and enjoy its unique features.

Daybreak Library has a recording studio, a bike repair station, digital design tools and several meeting areas and study rooms. Miners boys tennis captures another region title, nearly wins an individual state crown

U

nder the guidance of a new head coach, the Bingham Miners boys tennis team came into this season looking young. Really young, according to new head coach Lorin Brown.

We had nine freshman on the team this year,” explained Brown, who was inheriting a Bingham team that had won several region team and individual championships prior to his arrival.

The Bingham boys, however, have never won a state team tennis title in the school’s history and have only had a handful of individual state title holders.

But that may soon change, because with such a young squad the Miners still were able to do what they have done in the past, added Brown.

“The boys team won Region this year and we were pleased to be able to hoist the Region Trophy for another year!” said Brown, who in his first year appears to have some talent for coaching.

First, that team region title the Miners won placed them in every singles and doubles category at the 6A state tournament that was held May 6-14.

That was huge for a Bingham team led

by Kingsley Hoang, the Miners No. 1 singles player. The junior was so prolific in his first two matches at state, in fact, that he gave up just four set points en route to another milestone for the program.

It set up a state semifinal meeting of the top four seeds at Liberty Park, at which Hoang, the No. 3 seed, faced off against 2-seed Josh Jones of Farmington on May 12.

The underclassman Hoang met his demise in a match that his coach characterized as one that was “hard fought.” The final score indicated that, as Hoang broke Jones’ serve once

Then in second singles at the state tournament, the Miners were represented by Isaac Jewkes, an 8-seed who is one of only two seniors on this Bingham squad.

Jewkes won his first match against a competitor from Lone Peak and then in the round of 16 recorded the largest-margin victory of any Bingham boys tennis player at state, a 6-0, 6-0 pounding of No. 9 seed Chase Peterson of Kearns.

Jewkes fell in the state quarterfinals in No. 2 singles to 1-seed and eventual state champion Griffin Karras of American Fork, 1-6 and 1-6.

Bingham’s No. 3 singles player at state was senior Tabor Harvey who, with the 6-seed, received a first-round bye into the round of 16, where his journey ended with a 4-6, 4-6 slugfest defeat to Weber’s Gabriel Olsen.

Brown added that he was very pleased to have had the opportunity to coach both Jewkes

and Harvey in their final year at Bingham.

“We will be losing two amazing seniors that both played on our varsity boys team,” Brown said. “Huge thanks to Tabor Harvey and Isaac Jewkes for their leadership. We will miss them but wish them all the best for the future.”

In No. 1 doubles at the state tournament, the Miners trotted out the duo of juniors Sam Roberts and Parker Pedersen, the No. 18 seeds who pulled off a mild upset of a No. 15 team from Roy in the first round before falling in a round of 16 showdown to a team from Skyridge.

The same fate befell the Miners No. 2 doubles team of sophomore Treyton Brown and freshman Luke Huber, who at No. 8 defeated their first-round opponents from Clearfield and then suffered a thrilling three-set loss to a team from rival Herriman, 6-7, 6-1 and 4-6.

arm June temperatures bring with them the option to dine outside. Many establishments with beautiful outdoor seating are for special occasions, like La Caille in Sandy, The Charleston Draper and Tuscany in Holladay.

But a number of other locally-owned restaurants around the valley offer charming patio spaces for dining on a budget.

Here are five al fresco dining spots that are easy on the wallet.

Mountain Creek student-performers return to stage in ‘Little Mermaid, Jr.’

hen the curtain opened at Mountain Creek Middle’s auditorium for “Little Mermaid, Jr.,” there was a buzz of anticipation and excitement, but also a quiet collective sigh of relief.

The sold-out crowd was eager for the show since in spring 2020, the Mountain Creek’s first-ever production, “Seussical Jr.” ended abruptly before it was performed with the school closure surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic.

“It was two years ago this week that ‘Seussical‘ got shut down, the day right before our tech week was supposed to start,” said ninth-grader Alex McAllister during “Little Mermaid, Jr.” tech week. “So, on Monday, all the ninth graders who were in that show and are in this show came together and said, ‘let’s hope we can make it another week.’”

Alex was to have run the soundboard in “Seussical, Jr.” Now, as the stage manager, he’s been using his creativity, problem-solving and leadership skills to help coordinate the show he calls “challenging.”

“A lot of the challenge has been figuring out our cues, both backstage and in the booth. It’s also a very technical show and there’s all sorts of set changes backstage while at the same time, we’re doing all sorts of crazy lights and sound and adding things like having some ensembles on catwalks with bubble guns and a bubble video going so it makes it look like it’s in the sea. It’s a big thing trying to spearhead all of these at once and make sure it has a good flow,” he said. “It was definitely rough the first few days of tech week as we figured out when the sets came on, but we kept our heads up and figured it out.”

Alex also was part of the crew that worked for nearly two months on creating seaweed, made by melting plastic tablecloths, that adorned the auditorium.

“I love seeing little bits of it grow and come together to build a show. It’s so amazing to just see it all come together and be able to see how every person is playing their part to come together for this show,” he said. “The cast is awesome; they’re willing to take notes, listen, put in hard work and call for lights, sound, backstage sets. The show is going to be awesome, worth every bit of time we put into it.”

Auditions for the show were in January, followed by two- and three-hour rehearsals for four months leading up to the performances in April, said director Alex Waller.

“This whole school has been dying to give another show a try and put on a show again,” he said, adding that he has been thankful for help from parent volunteers, other staff members and even his mother, who helped sew the principal characters’ costumes. “I picked a show that was pretty large scale to celebrate coming back to things. It didn’t feel right to do ‘Seussical’ without the same cast.”

He also felt that in addition to the tech side, the songs and characters were good challenges for student-performers.

And if that wasn’t enough, much of the under-the-sea scenes were performed on wheels – roller skates, hoverboards, scooters.

“Our first week was skate week. We spent an entire week just getting used to roller skates. I just wanted to create a better illusion of being underwater. Plus, it was just an added layer of fun,” he said, adding that he also learned to skate “because I wanted to lead by example.”

Ninth-grader Elizabeth Anderson had never skated before that week.

“Being on roller skates makes it more challenging,” she said. “I used to practice every day on my own for two hours [for] two weeks after skate camp. Now I’ve finally gotten good enough where I can move around easily on stage, and I can spin and twirl when I sing.”

Elizabeth played Ariel, her first leading role, where she

learned to quickly make five costume changes and perform in character. She said that dedicated time to her role outside of rehearsals.

“Her music is a lot more challenging than I’ve had in supporting roles or ensembles, so I’ve worked with four different vocal coaches trying to nail down my songs because it’s definitely a different style than I’m used to. My favorite song is ‘One Step Closer’ because I get to wear a pretty pink ball gown and that makes me really happy. I’ve never done ballroom dancing, but I learned to waltz and it’s fun to do the dance steps in my ball gown with Spencer [Bowler],” said the student-performer who would like to be on stage next fall at Herriman High, but also has an ultimate career goal to work for NASA as a mathematician and scientist.

Spencer played Eric and said that “I found myself in tune with the character – his mannerisms and everything,” and was thankful he got the part.

That was a complete turn-around from how he felt two years ago when ‘Seussical’ and his role of Horton closed.

“It was a low point because I really liked ‘Seussical’ and it was my first time acting,” he said. “When I came to the school, I didn’t feel like I fit in with any of the sports groups, so I joined theater. Once I was there, I knew these were my people. I felt like the cast and everyone really supported me, and we really grew up with each other. So I really got into it and then I was completely disheartened to know we weren’t going to put it on. I sat for a while and cried. I spent all this time with these people, I worked hard, I had relationships with people, and I couldn’t even say good-bye because everything was shut down.”

Two years later, Spencer is back on stage.

“I look back and all I really remember are the good moments in rehearsal where I learned to love acting and I got some really good connections with people who helped me get to who I am today,” he said. “I’ve learned to become

more of an extrovert. I just love having interactions with people. Afterschool rehearsal is my favorite part of the day.

It’s a real blessing.”

That friendship and support of the cast and crew is what ninth-grader Eddie Gardner appreciates.

The former sour kangaroo in “Seussical, Jr.” was versatile playing a seagull, chef, fish and frog in this musical as well as helping on the production side with set pieces.

“I love this cast so much,” he said. “I feel safe with this group; they’ve helped me become a better person. Through theater, I’ve become more confident and less anxious. I’ve really made some really good friends.”

One of those friends is seventh-grader Oliver Haws, who played Scuttle.

“Eddie is my best friend; we met and got close every day at rehearsal,” Oliver said. “I love the people I meet, the experience – everything about theater.”

That included learning to accept the role of Scuttle when Oliver first wanted to be Flounder.

“I originally wanted to be Flounder because there’s this one song I love to sing, but the more I thought about it, I think the directors made the right call. I’m a really good fit for Scuttle. I’m a very energetic and very friendly person; there’s a lot of me I can put into this character. It’s a fun role,” Oliver said. “I’m super excited to be on stage, with all eyes on me. I know that sounds selfish, but I like belting my voice out. It’s what my voice is made for. I love being on stage, all eyes on me and singing my heart out into this character. It’s just so amazing.”

Waller said that through this experience, his cast and crew has “grown a ton.”

“It makes me proud to see them. They’ve just grown a lot more confident in themselves and in their abilities to be performers,” he said. “It’s been fun to see all of them learn how to be better people through theater.” l

Second annual Art on the Towne encourages new artists and vendors

n May 7 the South Jordan Arts council sponsored its second annual Art on the Towne event in front of city hall and the surrounding businesses.

Despite the less-than-ideal weather, the event welcomed first time artists and vendors as well as several returning artists. The town center was lined with easy-up tents filled with creations from wood work to greeting cards, pottery to oil on canvas, all original works crafted with care.

South Jordan resident Melissa Singer of Singer Creations joined the event for the first time. A recent retiree of the United States Marine Corps, Singer has been applying techniques from Shelee Art of Australia, who offers an online art course for beginners and professionals alike. Singer said she has been creating original work using the Shelee method for the past three years. On display were decorative tiles, canvas prints and jewelry, all created by Singer using acrylic and resin, and each taking approximately one month to fully cure and set.

“It’s just fun to do,” Singer said. “A way to destress.”

Although she is not looking to turn her hobby into a business, not wanting to put too much pressure on her creativity, Singer was able to gather some valuable feedback as several passersby asked for a type of jewelry she didn’t have on display. She plans to offer more variety at her next art event.

Another soon to be retiree and first-time attendee to the art event was South Jordan resident Sheryl Tripp. She creates art using cement. A cancer research scientist by day, Tripp admitted that her professional background has helped her to be able to work with such a unique medium. Tripp displayed decorative concrete discs in the shape of turtles, her most popular sellers. She also creates lawn or garden discs for the ultimate Utah Ute or Brigham Young University Cougar fans. While her art is not your typical hang on the wall type, it is unique and original and provides her a creative outlet.

“I get my inspiration from my mom,” Tripp said. “She had stepping stones with glass embedded in them.”

Tripp also gets inspiration for her designs from her travels south of the border.

Both Tripp and her husband have enjoyed numerous vacations to the Mexican coast.

She takes those memories and turns them into brightly colored concrete artwork.

The vision for enhancing the public’s access to the arts and artists is something the South Jordan Arts Council has understood as being important for the individual and for families.

A member of the Arts Council for the past four years, Kelly Holtman, who is also a professional watercolor artist, is encouraged by all the local art events that allow new artists to flourish and grow.

“I would love to see South Jordan be known as an arts mecca,” Holtman said.

She added that for new artists, the Art on the Towne event is a great way to allow the public to become familiar with their work, to receive feedback and learn from other artists. As a professional artist for the past 26 years, Holtman said that there is a lot that goes into preparing for art events, but that it is good for the community to get to experience the arts in multiple ways.

“When art is lacking in a community there is a lack of connectedness,” Holtman said.

For a lot of artists, the creative process is one of solitude, preferring a quiet space to focus on creativity and concentrate on the little details. For others, it is a family affair, done wherever there is room in the house to create. Nathan Andersen and his daughter, 7-year-old Priscilla, have created a unique twist on some recognized classics. They refer to their work as Copy Cats, famous classic paintings recreated with cats instead of humans.

Andersen admitted he enjoyed the smiles he saw on people’s faces as they walked by and noticed the paintings, realizing the clever twist on a classic. Although this was their first time attending the Art on the Towne event, they have participated in several small children’s markets, providing Priscilla the opportunity to experience the interactive elements of creating art, talking about it with the community and selling it to interested parties.

“Many artists, including myself, feel at peace when painting,” Andersen said. “I believe it can help with depression and give a sense of accomplishment.”

The long awaited Summerfest returns

ome semblance of normality will be regained this summer as the calendar in South Jordan is filling up with fun events. The biggest event of the year is SoJo Summerfest, a threeday celebration.

It’s the first time in several years that it’s in the regular location at City Park and at the regular time, June 2 - 4. Many departments have contributed to events for residents with all interests.

Fire Station No. 61 is hosting a car seat check from 4 - 5 p.m. that Thursday and Friday . If you have any questions about the safety of your child’s car seat, stop by the station so trained firefighters can check it.

The same fire department will also be hosting a challenge course on Saturday. Both kids and adults can test their abilities on the course and afterward will be able to tour the fire trucks and other vehicles on display. The firefighters have cooked up some foam related fun for the kids as well.

All three days, food trucks can be found in South Jordan City Park at 11000 S. Redwood Road. A new and exciting exhibit features hundreds of live butterflies filling the converted batting cages nearby.

Other unique activities include a ‘Bubbleologist’ doing interactive performances with bubbles, a root beer garden with unique flavors

and ice cream, bingo and an artisan market.

Don’t be surprised to find stilt walkers towering over visitors to the park, or you might run into Spiderman teaching basic self defense to children.

City of Fun will be in the park, packed with amusement rides and games. Family night is Thursday where all rides are 1 ticket. Pre-sale wristbands for unlimited rides are $25, so it’s best to buy them soon (on-site wristbands are $35). They are sold at the South Jordan Community Center and at City Hall.

Mulligan’s is hosting a night golf event on June 2, using LED golf balls, glow sticks and illuminated carts. The South Jordan Music Festival will be happening for two nights. On Friday, Foreign Figures and The Strike perform.

On Saturday. American Idol finalists Ammon and Liahona, and a local Beatles tribute band will be playing.

Saturday, June 4 is the parade, the longest running Summerfest tradition! From 7a.m. to 11a.m. a breakfast hosted at Station 61 will be held, with food for purchase by Village Inn. The parade will start at 9 a.m., beginning on 2200 W. The procession will turn onto Park Road down to Redwood Road, and finish at City Hall.

Opportunities to stay active include the 5K and kids 1-miler Saturday morning, and a pickleball doubles tournament later that after-

noon. The festival will end spectacularly with fireworks at 10 p.m. Find the full schedule of events and additional information at SoJo Summerfest.

South Jordan will also be restarting their Movies in the Moonlight series, where films are shown at Oquirrh Shadows Park. The schedule is not yet released, so check back soon for details. “Star Wars: A New Hope” will be playing in the park on June 3 as part of Summerfest.

New plan encourages growth in Daybreak

outh Jordan has approved and adopted a Community Reinvestment Project Area Plan as part of its strategy for growth in Daybreak. According to the general plan, using tax increment financing “will lead to significantly more capital investment and commercial and office development within the city than would otherwise occur.”

Daybreak, originally known as Sunrise, was a potential Superfund site for Rio Tinto.

According to Brian Preece, Director of City Commerce, it was “their flagship model for how to revamp mining properties all over the world.” Though the vision for the planned community started with Rio Tinto, it is now being carried out by the Larry H. Miller group.

TIF is an umbrella term for a variety of methods a city can use to invest in projects up-front with minimal negative fiscal impact.

The general principle is, a municipality will issue a bond backed by a portion of projected future taxes. In this case, the bond is estimated to 75%, and has a time period of 20 years.

South Jordan will stop increasing a 2022-2023 percentage of the property tax for this zone, though development will significantly increase the value of the area. The assumption here is that the other taxable revenue from this development will make up for the revenue lost by this financing.

By 2054, the city predicts the annual revenues from this area to increase from $1 million to $32.2 million. The plan also forecasts that “the estimated uninflated Taxable Value will be $2.9 billion which compares to the 2021 Taxable Value of $91 million.”

If realized, the city will be in no danger of defaulting on the issued TIF bonds.

All parties remain bullish about the investment. The city’s redevelopment agency believes the move “will attract private capital investment, contribute to the tax base and otherwise contribute to the economic vitality and prosperity of South Jordan.”

The danger in using TIFs lies in the uncertainty of future economic conditions. According to The World Bank organization, the TIF “is most appropriately used when land uses are up-zoned and when there is strong market demand.” These conditions appear to be met in South Jordan, though it is worth noting that the municipality bears the risk of repayment in a bond financing situation.

Trust is extremely important in a plan such as this. The master development agreement originally negotiated with Rio Tinto provides lots of flexibility to the developer. Preece believed the previous owners of the land, Minneapolis-based Värde Partners, “lost sight of what the vision was.” He explained that residential rarely pays for itself as a taxable entity.

South Jordan and LHM have had a very positive working relationship since the property was purchased six years ago. Though the city did not have a say in who would develop the land, Preece said “I’d like to think this

is who we would have chosen; we couldn’t have done better.”

The LHM Group is also very positive about the partnership. Brad Holmes, the president of their real estate division, said South Jordan is “a wonderful city to work with.

They’re visionary, and they have a great team.” He believes the project could take up to 30 years, and will feature a “substantial amount of office and retail development, especially along the mountain corridor.”

During the presentation in April, the entire council agreed this plan will help achieve the vision of an urban center in South Jordan. LHM will be responsible for building the dream, creating a place where residents can “live, work, and play” without leaving the area. l

Originally from Peru, South Jordan mother and daughter team are a scholastic juggernaut

he Taylorsville Campus of Salt Lake Community College (4600 South Redwood Road) has become a kind of “scholastic home away from home” for a mother and her three daughters. All four have earned SLCC associates degrees.

Mom, Luz Gamarra, is now an instructor at the college. And she, along with oldest daughter Elizabeth, have each earned prestigious honors this spring.

What makes their story even more remarkable is, 17 years ago – when all three of those daughters were under age 8 – Luz and Javier Gamarra migrated more than 4,000 miles with their girls, from Peru.

Moreover, they left perfectly comfortable lives and careers in their home country in 2005, all because one of the girls needed critical medical care they could not get in South America.

Luz and Javier were married in Peru in 1994. By the time they moved to the United States 11 years later, Luz had earned political science and law degrees, and had worked as a prosecutor for seven years. She had her sights on becoming a judge.

“People tried to tell me I could never

successfully restart my career here; but I was confident things would work out,” Luz Gamarra said. “It was tough to leave my mother and siblings. But we really didn’t have a choice. It has worked out well for all of us.”

Soon after arriving in Utah in 2005, Luz enrolled as an English Second Language student at SLCC. Now she is the school’s Lead Academic Advisor for Humanities and ESL students, where she has spearheaded a number of peer mentoring programs to support students in achieving their educational goals.

All of Luz’s hard work and scholastic achievements prompted SLCC officials to nominate her for the prestigious “USA Today Women of the Year Program.” This spring she learned the newspaper had selected her as its Utah honoree. “It was amazing to learn about the honor – such a huge surprise,” Luz Gamarra said. “I told them, I dedicated this award

About the same time Luz was learning of her honor from USA Today, her oldest daughter Elizabeth was also being singled out for her scholastic achievements – by Salt Lake Community College itself.

A former Fulbright Scholar and Oxford Consortium Fellowship recipient, Elizabeth Gamarra received SLCC’s inaugural “Rising Star Award.”

“The purpose of this award is to uplift recent SLCC graduates and highlight their commitment to community and to their professional and personal growth,” said Kate Rubalcava, CEO of Utah Nonprofits Association and a member of SLCC’s Alumni Leadership Council. “Elizabeth’s nomination stood out as someone who was not only exceptional in her professional accomplishments, but who at her core, is an inspiring leader.”

“It’s been nearly three years since our last trip to Peru, because of COVID,” Luz Gamar-

Visions of the wild west (valley)

A

dentist by trade, Dave Alvord stepped into local government as mayor of South Jordan in 2014. He spent one term in office, and dealt with issues related to high density housing, transportation and new recreational amenities. Now serving as a county council member representing District 2, Alvord has been learning to represent the interests of a much larger constituency: the valley’s west side.

“If I really wanted to make a difference in my community, it would be to fight for amenities in the areas I represent,” he said.

Salt Lake County transitioned to a mayor-council system in 2000. The legislative branch of the county is made up of a council including six districts and three at-large elected officials.

Alvord’s shift to the county level was partially motivated by the disparity he noticed in the distribution of county funds among districts. The Zoo, Arts and Parks funding is an example of this; with 60% of Tier 2 funding going toward\ District 1 and only 2% awarded to District 2. In this instance, he cites a lack of applicants and awareness as contributing factors.

One of Alvord’s latest challenges is finding uses for a portion of the $225 million in American Rescue Plan Act funds received

by Salt Lake County. He took to twitter to discuss his frustration with the limitations that accompany the money, saying the money comes with “strings attached.”

The “strings” he is speaking of are spending guidelines, allowing money to only be used “to respond to the pandemic or its negative economic impacts” and “to make necessary investments in water, sewer or broadband infrastructure,” among other stipulations outlined by the act. Alvord tweeted that he would be “very careful not to fund programs that will need sustained government support.”

In alignment with infrastructure investment, the councilmember is looking into funding clean water projects, such as reverse osmosis and reuse facilities, and replacing the closed Marv Jenson lap pool. The recreation center provided lanes for Bingham’s swim team, a team Alvord was on himself when in high school.

Another exciting project in the pipeline is the development of mountain biking trails in Butterfield Canyon. A variety of parties have been involved in pushing for the development of an official National Interscholastic Cycling Association course for high school competition.

ident, helped organize a fundraising effort and was able to present the county with a $200,000 check. The county, the Bureau of Land Management and Rio Tinto all own portions of the land. Sen. Mitt Romney (RUT) made calls to expedite communication with various organizations. “[It’s] probably the most exciting thing I’ve been able to participate in in the county,” Alvord said.

As mayor in South Jordan and then continuing in his county role, Alvord has also been working to develop the vision for Bingham Creek Regional Park at 10200 S. 4800 W. “It’s one of those really cool things I got to see starting with the city,” he said. The

South Jordan fifth-grader crowned state champion in Utah History Day Fair

hloak Nakra may be a typical fifth-grade boy who says his favorite part of school is the playground and dreams of designing cars for Mercedes-Benz.

Yet this South Jordan youth proved he knows his stuff when it comes to history — and writing.

The American Preparatory student recently took on the subject of western expansion to write a paper between 1,500 and 2,500 words complete with an annotated bibliography as well as a 500-word process paper.

Shloak’s paper, “The Effects of Westward Expansion: Success for Americans, but Damaging for Native Americans,” won the state contest for National History Day. “The best part was winning,” said the young historian who displays his state champion medal on his bedroom wall.

Shloak chose his topic partly to match the theme, “Debate & Diplomacy in History,” and partly because he had wanted to learn more about the topic he was introduced to in school.

“When I was learning these things in school, I was interested to learn more,” he said. “When I was doing my paper, I learned much more about these topics. I researched and read books that went more in depth about treaties than what I learned in school.”

Shloak said he used sources from the Library of Congress.

“I learned more about how America was in the 1800s and more about Native American culture and the Manifest Destiny,” he said. “The topic fit the theme of debate when the settlers were starting to move into Native American territories because there was a lot of fighting of treaties and a lot of talking. Then, the settlers tried to do a lot of things to get the Native Americans out, and they made reservations for Native Americans

to move in, but half the time once they went through these reservations, the settlers discovered gold or something there and they got kicked out of their land again. Sometimes Native Americans tried things that wouldn’t work, and sometimes, the settlers and the United States government tried to do things that wouldn’t work so they needed some diplomacy.”

Shloak picked writing a paper over other methods of presenting what he learned because “we write papers in school, only this one was much longer and harder to write than what I usually do in school.”

For about one month, he worked on this project on his own, outside of school, on top of his regular schoolwork.

However, when he needed help, he turned to his mother, who teaches history at Salt Lake Community College and has volunteered with National History Day. “It was my first time doing a bibliography, so she taught me how because in school, I’m used to doing quotes and footnotes were a new thing,” he said.

Then, he submitted his paper.

With an option of in-person or virtual competitions, he opted for virtual so he wouldn’t miss school. Shloak learned he won the Salt Lake regional competition and received a certificate of achievement before the paper won the state title.

“I learned a lot and want to do it again next year,” he said.

While youth division students don’t compete at the national level, secondary students can advance.

Two students, Jayshabari Shankar and Sang Hyun Chun, who both attend Hillcrest High in Midvale, also competed and qualified for the national contest, which will be held virtually June 12-16. l

Bingham baseball hoists Region 3 crown

T

his could be the year. The year that Bingham baseball finally breaks the drought, a dearth of hoisting and kissing a state championship trophy, the trophy that has eluded them since 2018.

Bingham (20-5) has its best record in years. Better than that state championship trophy winning 21-10 year of 2018 in which the Miners not only did not lose a single game in the playoffs — they only gave up six runs total through six games. The Miners also shut out and then swept rival Riverton that year in two games at the 6A championship game.

That this year looks and feels even better is shocking. But, it really does have that look and feel.

Bingham went 13-2 in region play this year en route to winning the Region 3 championship — their first in the new alignment. Key behind that surge has been senior Jonny Hatch who has hit three home runs over the past four weeks and has five total on the season.

Headed to Salt Lake Community College to play baseball after signing with the Bruins in February, Hatch has been versatile for the Miners, and has picked up his hitting of late — right when his team needs it most.

The senior is not only the Miners’ home run king, he’s their RBI leader as well, and

has picked up an already torrid pace the past six games, hitting 13 of his team-high 31 in that time frame.

Senior Preston Jacobsen has also been huge for Bingham. Though the lanky senior has been consistent for the Miners over the course of the season, and has hit four home runs for them, he’s also slapped in five of his 24 RBI in his last six games.

Bingham has also had several arms that have contributed to the team’s rise. Junior Maddax Peck has been the Miners’ ace of late, having won all three of his starts over the past three weeks for a perfect 3-0 record this year.

His brother Maxton, who is also committed to play at SLCC after the senior signed with the Bruins in March has also contributed lately, as has Israel Diaz, the senior righty who has won three of his four starts since April 9.

And, in the regular season finale, Hatch himself stepped to the mound and capped off a successful season by earning the win in a hard-fought 17-13 victory versus crosstown rival Riverton on May 11, one day after the Miners earned their first region title since that fairytale year back in 2018.

ardware Creative Collective and Comcast partnered to host the inaugural Comcast RISE Black Excellence Event in Salt Lake City on Apr. 20. The celebration honored Utah Black Creatives in a range of industries from the arts, business, education and film to mental health, armed forces, tech and venture capital.

Honorees were selected based on their ability to showcase their creativity through inspiration, intersection and innovation.

“It was truly amazing to see something that started as a vision and brainstorming with folks around a kitchen table turn into an extraordinary celebration of Utah’s Black creatives,” said Deneiva Knight, External Affairs Director, Comcast Mountain West Region. “For me, Hardware Collective is a platform for Black creatives to acknowledge and celebrate themselves and their peers versus waiting and hoping to receive accolades from outsiders. Daybreak fourth-grade students hold book drive for Ugandan children

t was a lesson far beyond the original thought of Daybreak fourth-grade teacher Tawna Pippen.

“It started as a book drive as a service project, but it became a great opportunity for them to see how reading and books can impact other kids around the world,” she said.

“It was really good for them to feel and realize what they were doing is going to make a difference to someone, somewhere.”

Pippen had learned about Kids Read Uganda while attending an event during the winter and tucked it away until this past spring when it would be a great time for her students to do a service project and get books in the hands of other children this summer.

“I thought it’s pretty easy to do and most of the kids can participate if they have even one book at home they can donate,” she said, adding that it became a grade-level project. “We had some students create skits and share with other classes and other students made posters. We held it for one week and came up with a goal of 150 based on if every fourth-grader could bring a book. We talked about how they were going to collect the books, how to count them and keep a running tally. The kids were excited about it.”

When the students surpassed their goal with 331 books, Pippen reached out to the nonprofit and learned that the Kids Read Uganda chief financial officer, David Muyanja, was visiting from Uganda. He offered to give a presentation and personally thank the students.

Muyanja shared with students about their daily life in Uganda, how families purchase live chickens off of a truck or bananas from someone pedaling a bicycle. Women walk with wheat in baskets on their head and hang clothes to dry outside.

“Our students should be here enjoying the same classes and facilities as these students, but with the disparities, they don’t,” he said. “It may be shocking to our kids to know that these kids here are seeing their pictures I shared on a big projected screen, because there, they’ve never had access to that.”

Muyanja also pointed out that most Ugandan families don’t have access to smartphones or the internet.

“These are things that help open their minds. For them, if children even attend school, they walk for miles. They learn outside,” he said. “Even the simple things here are not common there. There, bread is a luxury, not a staple. They will not buy bread when they need a kilo of maize flour to prepare for one, two, or three kids at home. Everywhere in the U.S., you can drink the water. It’s not the same in Uganda or many African countries. You need to boil it. If you don’t, it’s going to make you sick with typhoid dysentery.”

Read libraries they’re establishing in some Ugandan villages. These libraries are similar to the Little Free Libraries that have popped up across the United States.

The first half-dozen libraries, each costing about $150 to build and stock full of books, have been strategically placed in villages where there has been little access to reading material. Before COVID-19, children could check out a book from the ambassador who oversaw the library. When the pandemic hit, the libraries closed and books were given away, Muyanja said.

Now, they’re in the process of restocking the books that are written in English.

“English is the language that is commonly used, but not all children know English.

Many parents in these communities have not been to school and may not know how to read these books. In fact, sometimes when they first hold a book, it may be upside down. We want them to have books with pictures of things that is similar with what they have within the culture and the community, something that easily blends into the child’s life,” he said. “We want to help children read. At the end of the day, a person who has no trade, a person who cannot even read signposts along the road, almost becomes useless in today’s world.”

Smart-Brown remembers when they opened the first Ugandan library filled with books.

“I saw the children’s faces asking, ‘What is it? What do I do? Can I touch it? Is that permitted?’” she recalled. “I could just see the impact on their little faces. We had over 100 children come to see their first book — and we served cake. It was not only their first

book they ever saw, but also the first piece of cake. That just shocks me. It’s so humbling.”

While the program re-establishes itself in Uganda, Smart-Brown is also focusing her efforts to help children who live in the Salt Lake Valley with Kids Read libraries.

“We’re placing them in the communities around the 48 Title I schools because these kids don’t have books. That’s why we’re doing it, to make books more accessible. We’re reaching out to have people help sponsor a library, take care of a library or donate books,” she said, adding that not only these Daybreak students, but businesses and book clubs may be able to support the Kids Read Salt Lake Valley libraries.

Books donated locally will stay local; books for Uganda will be purchased there to help with their economy and save on the cost of shipping, she said.

“We’re trying to help every child be able to read and have access to books,” she said.

Pippen said it was a much more broadening experience than she envisioned.

“I had showed them on a map where Uganda was, so they were able to see how far it was from Utah, but with them sharing, our students were able to learn about kids their age living in a different part of the world. I love giving our kids this experience to learn about Uganda,” she said. “Ultimately, this is what they’re going to remember years from now. I always tell my students that you might remember the water cycle or when you learned fractions and decimals, but you will certainly remember moments that make an impact on your life or on others and this may be one of those moments.” l

Paradigm High students help create beds from bags

P

aradigm High sophomore Jacob Payne folded a plastic grocery bag in half twice before cutting the bag into 2-inch wide strips.

He and his classmates were creating balls of plarn, plastic yarn, during their kedge, or homeroom advisory, time.

“We’re taking bags and turning them into plarn,” he said. “It’s simple and resourceful.

The plarn is turned into recyclable mats for people who need them.”

Paradigm students were taking part in the Bags to Beds service project that was founded in 2017 by Kaitlin McLean, a University of Utah student who was concerned with the number of individuals who spent snowy, cold nights on the community’s streets. Community members can count their volunteer hours and number of completed mats on the service project’s website.

The students’ homeroom teacher, Emilee McCoy, said that she learned about Bags to Beds last November when the school held a month of service. After trying it with her own family, which required her to relearn how to crochet, McCoy introduced it to her students.

They immediately took to bringing in donated plastic bags and making plarn for her to crochet to make a mat.

“We’ve easily used several hundred bags for the mat so far,” she said.

The sleeping mat sports colors of red, white, blue, yellow, green, tan and gray.

“We’ve used bags from Costa Vida, Smith’s, Walmart, Target, Harmons, Ream’s, even some from my mom’s former shop she owned. It’s a cool way to teach recycling and

helping someone who is homeless,” she said.

McCoy said that she was surprised at the weight and warmth of the sleeping mat.

“I sit and crochet and have it over my lap.

It’s a lot heftier and warmer than I thought it would be. It’s been something that I can easily pick up and do anytime,” she said.

Sophomore Spencer Cox said he wanted to learn how to crochet so he could be able to give his teacher breaks.

“It looks kind of fun to do,” he said. “I’ve liked making plarn. It’s a good way to start the day, doing something that’s easy, but satisfying since it helps others.” l

AAI pet clinics give students pet vaccination experience

outh Jordan resident Kimberly Woods was thankful she was able to microchip and vaccinate her 3-month-old Cavalier King Charles spaniel, Nico.

“I just moved here from New York, and I was traveling, so I haven’t been able to get him into the vet,” Woods said as she took advantage of American Academy of Innovation’s mobile pet clinic.

AAI animal science teacher Kathy Nuttall and her students teamed up with Nuzzles Animal Rescue in Park City to have the mobile pet clinic that has traveled from Kamas to Magna.

“We want to offer different communities a low-cost vaccine clinic,” Nuttall said.

Nuttall teaches the animal and veterinary science classes from equine science and animal science to small and companion animal science, and from veterinary assistant to intro to aquaculture.

Most of her students were interacting with both the patrons and their pets. Nuttall said that through the experience they were learning general procedures in working with people and animals, as well as understanding paperwork.

Those who were enrolled in the veterinary assistant course could help hold or

give the vaccinations.

“This helps give them more hands-on work with animals. They’re able to interact with animals and we talk about behavior and general handling of the animals. We also talk about the vaccines required with companion animals, so they were able to see first-hand the vaccines we give and how we give them as well as the paperwork that is required,” she said. “They were prepared to answer questions about immunology and vaccines.”

The mobile clinic also gives students a different type of challenge from a normal veterinary clinic.

“We’re outside so we’re dealing with those noises or the wind and that can startle an animal. Some of that can play into animals’ emotions. Then, some people want to hold their own pets, so it gives our students a different hands-on situation,” Nuttall said.

The students also provided patrons with information on how to license their pets with the city.

After the mobile pet clinic, Nuttall and her students discussed in class their experiences.

“The whole purpose is to try and give

them hands-on outside experience from what they get in class and provide a service for the community,” she said.

In the past, Nuttall’s students, both at AAI and Mountain Edge in West Jordan, had helped with wellness exams and administered vaccines for animals, many from reservations, that were put up for adoption.

“Some of the students become certified so they can become a veterinary technician and work in the field,” she said.

Others may look to be animal nutrition specialists, animal trainers, zoologists, conservation officers or work in fish and marine ecology or other fields.

“A good percentage further their education to work in the animal field,” Nuttall said. “Our animal science class tends to be one that has more interest in it.”

That class also counts for a science credit.

In the animal science course, students develop knowledge and skills in genetics, anatomy, physiology, nutrition, disease and management. Nuttall also hopes her students can participate in an Ag Day, where they help elementary students learn animal education on the farm.

The other four AAI courses count as career and technical education credits toward graduation. The CTE classes help provide students with skills so they will be prepared for post-secondary options, such as on-the-job training, certification programs and college or technical training.

In the equine science class, students learned handling techniques as well as genetics, anatomy, physiology and nutrition, diseases and management.

The small and companion animal science class explores the relationship between people and their pets, primarily cats, dogs and horses. Students learn about zoology, behavior, training, genetics, animal rescue, health care and more.

The vet assistant course teaches students about the general care of the animals, including their anatomy, physiology, chemistry, animal health and disease, dentistry and laboratory procedures.

“We’re learning more of the medical aspects of the animals because we can get into more technical details,” she said.

The intro to aquaculture was a new class this past spring. The course covers fish ecology, anatomy and physiology, water quality, aquaponics and the scientific method in the context of raising and breeding fish.

“Right now, we’re trying to breed beta fish and in the next couple weeks, we’re going to grow some greens to feed other

animals like our rabbits,” Nuttall said. “We cover freshwater, but we also cover some saltwater tank material. We are hoping to set up a large saltwater tank in the school lobby for students to manage and take care of.”

Nuttall, who has taught at AAI for eight of her 34 years working in the field, knows not every student will become a veterinarian.

“I tell students that I hope these classes give you knowledge and skills that you can take with you to better take care of your own animals and maybe find a career path you didn’t even know about. I had a group of students help with therapy animals and they saw a lot of what these animals can do as far as emotional support. We want to offer our students the knowledge and experiences outside the classroom so they realize what they’re learning in the classroom can provide services for our community,” she said.

For student Murphy Shumway, who also is a Nuzzles kennel tech, being able to provide the service to about 50 patrons that Saturday at the school was a no-brainer.

“When we vaccinate their pets for $20, we’re helping [protect] them from getting one of these horrific diseases, some of these are definitely contagious,” she said. “It’s an opportunity we can help our communities.” l

Family service nights encourage all ages to give back to the community

n her home office Ann Lobos has a quote on the wall surrounded by the shape of a heart. “Save the world, save the youth.” It’s a simple statement, but one that Lobos has put some action behind through her efforts to get young people and families involved in service nights with the South Jordan Rotary Club.

“My goal in life is to help the world reach its full potential,” Lobos said.

Once a month Lobos and some dedicated committee members gather and plan a hands-on service-oriented project that families, even those with smaller children, can participate in. The group of volunteers meet at the Daybreak Firehouse to do whatever the committee has planned for the night.

Some past projects include assembling kids care packages for Venezuelan refugees, making blankets for disadvantaged youth, and most recently, filling Easter eggs and crafting sock bunnies.

Lobos, who has been president of the South Jordan Rotary since July 2021, realized that her family was unaware of all the service she and the club were performing, often spending eight to 10 hours a week on club dealings. A small business owner, the treasurer of the South Jordan Chamber of

Commerce, and a mother of five children, Lobos recognized that her family time was limited, so she went about restructuring her volunteer efforts in a way that her family could participate with her.

“In a way that is what got me to start [these] events,” Lobos said. “I’m really busy, I’m doing a lot of service and I don’t think my kids knew what I was doing, and I don’t think they [understood] what service [was].”

In September of 2021, the first family Rotary meeting was held and 30 people showed up ready to work. The next month, after posting the family night event to the website JustServe.org, the number of people that registered to volunteer was 100.

The numbers have continued to increase month by month since that first meeting.

Lobos said that she has had to close the registration as early as two months prior simply because she didn’t have enough manpower to help facilitate the family service nights.

“I need people that are willing to help plan the projects and find the sponsors, there is a lot that goes into it,” Lobos said.

Lobos said that despite the need for manpower, she has seen a lot of support

from the business community that has been willing to sponsor the various projects. The family service night event on May 9 was sponsored by Cyprus Credit Union. Past sponsors include Mountain America Federal Credit Union, The Gunn Group, Intermountain Health Care and the South Jordan Chamber of Commerce.

In April, Lobos was the recipient of the Healthy South Jordan award for her efforts in helping to create opportunities for both young and old to have ways to give back to the community, something that both Lobos and the Healthy South Jordan coalition view as a way to improve mental health within the community. Prior to her life as a certified public accountant, Lobos was once a masters student looking to earn a degree in mental health counseling.

She recognizes that when people of any age find a purpose, they become stronger mentally. The family night events are a way to get the younger generation involved and teach them transferable life skills, such as financial planning, leadership and organizational communication.

Camden Cox has participated, along with his father Jeremy, in the last three family service nights, most recently the May family service night when volunteers made aprons and

Mother’s Day cards. The 15 year old said he was looking to fill up some of his free time.

“I was kind of surprised when he picked the Rotary club because I kind of pictured the Rotary club being older people,” Jeremy Cox said. “When we heard about the family Rotary, we thought it was different and decided to try it out.”

Both Camden and his dad were surprised at the wide range in ages that were all working together when they showed up to their first meeting back in March. Even the young toddlers had small jobs to do and a part to play.

Camden plans to continue working with Lobos on building up the momentum of the family service nights.

The South Jordan Rotary Club is a nonprofit and one of 46 clubs in Utah, according to the organization’s website. One of the functions of the club is to provide service within the local community as well as the international community. It is nonpolitical and nondenominational. According to Lobos, the South Jordan Rotary has historically held meetings on Tuesday mornings.

“The library system has really blossomed,” said Salt Lake County Councilmember David Alvord.

The Salt Lake County Library system has 17 community libraries along the Wasatch Front and has received numerous awards since its inception in 1939. or the Bingham Miners track team, everything is coming up exactly the way many around the program anticipated. A young team at one time, they are no longer that young.

How young were they? The boys track team didn’t finish in the top 10 at last year’s 6A state championships. And the girls were seventh, even lower than Region 3 rival Herriman.

Things have changed quickly, though.

The Miners won Region 3 team titles on both the boys and girls sides, reclaiming past glories. Senior Cody Hone is on pace to easily eclipse his eighth place finish at state in the 100 meters last year.

Hone had the fourth fastest time in class 6A in the 100 meters this year with a blistering 10.71, surpassed only by Parker Kingston of Roy, Cody Hagen of rival Corner Canyon and Smith Snowden of Skyridge, all of whom will be playing Division I college football.

In the 200 meters, the Bingham senior had an even faster time than Snowden going into this year’s 6A state championships, quite a turnaround from not even qualifying for the event finals at state last year. Hone set a personal record, 21.67, at this year’s Region 3 Championships, a time that was just a tad slower than BYU commit Kingston’s and Weber State commit Hagen’s were.

But it’s clear that this year Hone, who also ran the 400 meters with the third-best time in 6A [another personal record 49.04], has the secret sauce that will make him a force to be reckoned with come state.

The Miners boys are also no slouch in the relay events, having had the fifth fastest time in 6A in the 4x100, and the fastest time in the state in the 4x200.

Junior Brayden Whitehead won a region title in the high jump, leaping 6’04”. With the second-highest jump in 6A he should be considered a serious threat to capture a state title, too. In the long jump, senior Brandon Hall is another one to watch, having leapt the second-furthest distance for Bingham at 21’ 7.5”.

But perhaps the Miners have saved their most talked-about athlete for last, because not only is senior Dallin Thornton some kind of special athlete, he may well be seen on TV someday soon.

Thornton made national headlines for a 16’9” jump in the pole vault at the Region 3 Championships, a whopping 9 inches better than any other competitor and by far a state record. All eyes are on Thornton to not only repeat as state champion, but threatening that 16’9” jump the senior made a few weeks ago.

team at last year’s 6A state championships and using those as fuel.

To wit: Senior Shelbie Workman was eighth last year at state in the 100 meters, but blazed her way to a 12.48 finish and a Region 3 individual championship.

Sophomore Andrea Amoah scorched a talented field in the 200 meters — including Workman and two stars from Corner Canyon — and won herself a Region 3 title in that event.

But junior Natalie Swain is also one to watch at this year’s state championships. She not only won the region title in the 800 meters, the versatile Swain turned around and captured the 3,200 meter crown as well.

Swain may only have the eighth fastest time in the state this year in the 800 meters, and fifth best in the 3,200 — and arguably runs her best in the 1,600 meters if her time there is any indication — but you’d be a fool to count her out of the medals at BYU. In the 100 meter hurdles, senior Eliza Smith is ready to defend her state title and avenge her second place finish in the 300 meter hurdles. Smith captured Region 3 titles in May in both events.

The 4x100 relay team is also ready to defend their state title after running a blazing 49.28 at the Region 3 Championships. Like Smith, the 4x200 team will be gunning for revenge on a second-place finish at BYU last year, and with a region crown they’re aiming for more. l

A one-horse race

W

hen I was in eighth grade, I was elected to the class senate. In ninth grade, I was elected as a cheerleader. Did I deserve these titles?

Probably not. But I’d bribed fellow students with copious amounts of candy because that’s the American way.

After a series of decidedly terrible life choices, my scholastic career drove off the rails and I never ran for election again. When I turned 18, I registered to vote and I’ve cast a vote in every election since. I also respond to Twitter polls, fill out Amazon reviews and take surveys at the bottom of yard-long Kohl’s receipts.

Now that I’m a semi-functioning adult, it’s up to me to choose the right people to lead us into the future. Since the future is nuclear bomb-shaped, we won’t need leaders much longer, but elections are important, at least until that mushroom cloud rises over the mountains.

Here’s why voting is funny. You’ll get a kick out of this. When I vote for new leadership or more progressive ideas, the person/issue I’m voting for rarely wins. Why? Because I live in conservative Utah.

People tell me to just move to a different state. I don’t want to. At least not until I can afford a lighthouse on the East Coast where I can replace the light bulb with a bat signal.

So, for now, I’m here in Utah, voting for things that matter to me and to many other people, without a Popsicle’s chance in hell of it working out.

In fact, we started an election night drinking game. For every winner who isn’t a conservative white male, we take a shot of tequila. We’ve been sober for decades. Because here’s the truth: My vote rarely counts in Utah.

Oh, our esteemed leaders say my vote counts, but they know it’s a lie.

With their abstract-painting, gerrymandered districts they’ve effectively shut down my voice. I feel all I can do is

en’s rights, access to health care, gun control and education. That’s a difference I see between male and female roles: men want power, women want to lead.

After being mansplained to since birth, I understand my female brain can’t comprehend the problems involved with running the state. Like, how can our leaders make money if we don’t let them relocate a prison across the valley so they can develop prime property? How can the state generate revenue on alcohol without ridiculous licensing fees and policies? How can we possibly treat educators, minorities, or uteruses with respect, without creating laws to rein them in?

And then they have the gall to say, vote in the leaders you want. How? Tell me how and I’ll do it! Phew. I must be off my anti-hysterical meds.

If I learned anything from running for office in junior high, it’s that voters will follow the candy. But as a female voter in Utah, I’m tired of the sugary-sweet, syrupy condescension.
