n May 1, the city of South Jordan hosted the first Art on the Town Event held at the South Jordan Towne Center from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. Artists and vendors were set up directly in front of City Hall and neighboring retail stores, and showcased many different forms of media in an effort to connect the community through art and expression.

For many artists and small business owners, the past year left little opportunity to connect face to face with the community at large and to showcase their talents and passions, due to the Covid-19 pandemic. This outdoor event was a way to connect residents to artists and their work while still maintaining a safe and comfortable environment.

The city worked closely with a local vendor management company, SoJo Markets LLC, and its owner Laura Gaillard, who runs the Daybreak farmer’s market, set to begin again on June 5.

“I love having it here in South Jordan, I sometimes feel like the north end of the valley gets a lot of things happening, and I love to have it open here, I feel like it gives our community a place to go, and strengthens it,” Laura Gaillard said, a Daybreak resident and owner of SoJo Markets.

The community was able to experience local artists like Mary Nielsen, who has been creating art all her life.

Nielsen’s philosophy of head to heart to hand has become a way of not only creating art but teaching it as well. Fun of playing together spreads throughout Bingham’s unified soccer team

I just wanted to come out and help them have a good experience.”

That’s what Bingham High junior Christian Jones said shortly after playing in the Salt Lake area co-ed unified soccer tournament.

When the Miners unified coach, Braxton Thornley, offered the opportunity to his English Language Arts students to become partners to the student-athletes, Jones said he volunteered to play unified soccer for the first time — even though he plays on the school lacrosse team, he set down his stick for the all-day tournament.

“I have a couple cousins who have disabilities so it’s nice to come out and help them,” Jones proclaimed, adding that he’s seen his teammates at school, but he didn’t know them well before the unified soccer season began. “It’s fun trying to get everyone some points and see everyone do something.

They’re excited to play and score and when they do, it’s so much fun and that makes it fun for everyone. I’d like to come back and play again next year.”

Thornley said that he appreciated those who came out to play this year, which during COVID-19, looked different – both in terms of numbers of students as well as the way the tournament was played.

While those on the field had to follow the safety and health precautions as other high school teams, the tournament was set up regionally to reduce travel and have fewer teams playing at a site to reduce the risk of spreading COVID-19, said Courtnie Worthen, Unified Champion Schools manager who oversees the unified sports program.

At Bingham, with concerns about the virus, Thornley worried if there would be enough team members to play, but he was relieved shortly before the tournament when all five student-athletes, who are seniors, were

able to play along with three partners.

“We ended up having all our athletes returning except one, so that helped that they knew each other and played well together,” he said. “Some of them sort of knew me, but since I was new last year and it had been a while , they had to get to know me as well as the partners.”

They did this with the practice they had, introducing themselves as they passed the balls. They also went over some of the basics before scrimmaging.

“We packed a lot into that short 1.5-hour practice,” he said. “Our biggest goal was to give our students as much participation and experience and normalcy as possible – especially with these students who don’t always adjust well with changes. It was a chance for them to be with their peers, having fun, getting to have that high school experience.”

Thornley liked what he saw on the field during the tournament.

“They did incredible in their first game against Hillcrest,” he said. “We were down

While the Miners eventually lost to the Huskies, they went on to challenge Murray High and Riverton High in their next games.

Still, the athletes had fun, appreciated their families’ cheering, and having the school psychologist who came with his family to support the team, Thornley said.

The partners, like Jones, had the opportunity to learn from their peers and value them, Thornley said.

“Everyone deserves the same level of respect and this gives a little bit of shine on those who aren’t always in the limelight,” he said. “Between games, I saw a lot of interaction between our athletes and partners.

They’d play games, chat together over lunch.

The highlight was when the athletes scored or saw their teammates score and the partners would see their excitement, their reaction.

It really made the athletes’ day and in turn, made everyone else’s day.”

That is something that Worthen appreciates.

“We hope this helps to create lasting friendships, where they see each other in the hallways and say hi, eat together at lunch and have fun,” she said. “This helps to build camaraderie. I’d love to host unified dances or see clubs that help build leadership with the students and their peers.”

The Miners planned to finish the unified sports year by participating in the track and field meet in mid-May. Next year, unified soccer in Utah will become a fall sport, allowing year-round unified sports, with basketball in the winter and track in the spring. l

The art Nielsen showcased to the community at the event consisted of polymer clay tiles and alcoholic ink portraits. The medium of alcoholic ink, Nielsen said, can be unpredictable but can lead to really creative pieces. Nielsen has prints available for purchase on her Etsy shop named after her art philosophy.

There was a little bit of art for everyone, from alcohol ink, graphic design, pottery, jewelry, even apparel.

“We’ve got all different types of art, it’s so wonderful to see the types of art that there are,” Gaillard said.

Art comes in all forms and can be displayed in various ways. South Jordan resident Brandon Thomas brought his artistic approach to apparel design. Thomas began creating original designs four years ago which eventually led him to screen printing the graphics on high-quality t-shirts, sweatshirts, hats, and totes out of his garage.

Thomas now sells his designs at art markets across the Wasatch front.

“To me art and creating is a fun way to express my own personal interests and lifestyle,” Thomas said.

SoJo Clothing were recently invited via Instagram to suggest design ideas for the upcoming summer season, the vote was wildflowers.

“The ultimate joy is when I see someone out and about with some of my art you can wear,” Thomas said.

South Jordan artist, Nate Brimhall, expressed that art is about humanity. That is how Brimhall views his work and his artistic approach, using metal sculpture as his medium. Brimhall creates large framed sculpture pieces that have been displayed around the valley, including Southern Utah.

“I want to keep humanity in the daily equations of life,” Brimhall said.

On display at the art on the town event was a sculpture that Brimhall referred to as diligence, a piece he said was inspired by onward movement and continuation, creating a sense of hope despite the chaos of the past year. Those wanting to see more of Brimhall’s work can visit Oquirrh Hills Middle

School, where a piece he calls “Elevate” is situated on campus.

The city hopes that there will be more events like this in the future.

“The reason I like to do these, and why I get so excited about them is because it gives local small businesses, tiny businesses, an opportunity to sell their creative works and to come out and be successful,” Gaillard said.

New developments in South Jordan must adhere to water efficiency standards or pay double

n May 4, the South Jordan City Council approved a new water-saving ordinance for the city, which will encourage new commercial and residential developments to install water-efficient landscaping.

New developments that don’t adopt the Jordan Valley Water Conservancy District’s standards for water efficiency will have to pay more than twice as much for water as those who do.

“For each community that opts in to these water efficiency standards, they’ll have access to our least expensive water supplies—we call them Block One,” said Alan Packard, assistant general manager of the Jordan Valley Water Conservancy District.

Communities that don’t want to adopt the new water efficiency standards can opt out, but they will be relegated to the far more expensive Block Two water supplies. Block One is about $500 an acre-foot; Block Two is about $1,000 an acre-foot.

“The Block Two supply is being developed for those lands outside of our current boundaries, and it will also be made available for those communities who decide not to opt in to the water efficiency standards. So for those cities who say ‘no water efficiency standards, don’t want to do that,’ there will

be Block Two water available. So it’s not like we’re going to turn off the tap,” Packard said.

Water-efficient landscaping, or “localscapes,” as Jordan Valley Water terms it, involves a number of factors. First, turf grass will be limited only to those areas where it can be used and easily maintained. It will take up no more than 35% of the front and side yards of residential buildings, and no more than 20% of landscaped space for commercial, industrial, or institutional buildings.

The bulk of the landscape space is to be filled with lower-water plantings and irrigated with a “smart” drip system, which will water more in hot dry conditions, and less or not at all when the temperature is cool or when it rains.

The results are attractive, easily maintained landscapes.

“If implemented correctly, localscapes I think, has a great look and feel to it—better than wall-to-wall grass, for sure,” said Steven Schaefermeyer, South Jordan’s director of planning.

The new ordinance will apply only to new construction or retrofitting. “So if you do a major renovation to your yard, you would have to follow these standards. But … it’s not applicable to current landscaping that’s already installed,” Schaefermeyer said.

Individual back yards, schools, and recreational areas are also exempt from the localscape requirements.

“We don’t have jurisdiction over the state or schools … and grass is allowed in usable areas,” Schaefermeyer said. “So a large regional park with grass makes sense, because people are using the grass. I think part of the philosophy is, why are we wasting water on grass that people don’t use? By use, I mean, play on, sit on, enjoy.”

Jordan Valley Water’s Matt Olsen said the new efficiency standards will be a win for all stakeholders, because it will reduce costs, reduce waste, and make for more a drought-resilient community.

“As you look at Nevada and California and Arizona… they’re going and doing large scale turf removal programs, incredible costs.

And the problem is that it’s an incredibly inefficient use of public funds,” Olsen said.

Citing Division of Water Resources figures, Olsen guessed that retrofitting an inefficient landscape ultimately costs about five times more than installing an efficient one at the outset.

The Jordan Valley Water Conservancy District has long been offering education and financial incentives for residents to improve

their landscapes and reduce water use, but this has had limited results. The new ordinance introduces a more regulatory element to the quest to conserve the region’s limited water. The Jordan Valley Water Conservancy District will provide South Jordan with $60,000 a year for the next three years to offset the city’s expenditures as it adopts the new requirements.

“A great deal of work has gone into this by the staff at Jordan Valley Water,” said South Jordan Mayor Dawn Ramsey. I appreciate the vision for really looking long term and trying to make sure that we have enough water to accommodate all of the growth and the big picture, long term.” l

South Jordan City Council approves budget for fiscal year 2021-22

T

he South Jordan City Council adopted the city’s final annual budget for the fiscal year 2021-2022 in a meeting held on May 5. This year, the city’s total appropriated operating budget is $116 million, divided between its general, special revenue, debt service, enterprise, internal service, and trust and agency funds. Each of these funds in turn has a complete budget of its own, all of which are publicly available on the city website.

As part of the final budget adoption, the City Council also moved to adopt whatever tax rate the state tax commission assigns them for the year, even though the state tax commission hasn’t yet told them exactly what that tax rate will be.

“We don’t have that tax rate yet, and we will not have it until probably the end of next month,” said South Jordan Chief Financial Officer Sunil Naidu. “But we feel, most of us, like the tax rate is such that it will capture the same amount of revenue that we received in the prior year. So at least that much of a revenue, plus the new growth that we will get. So that’s what we built our budget based on, and we are comfortable with that.”

The tentative budget—basically a latestage draft of the budget, the last phase before adoption—was available for the general public to review, comment on, and question

for more than a week prior to the May 5 public budget hearing. According to Naidu, not a single member of the public questioned or commented on the tentative budget during this weeklong period, and nobody showed up to comment at the public hearing, either. It passed unanimously.

According to South Jordan City Manager Gary Whatcott, some of the major allocations in this year’s budget include the fortification of the city’s employee retention program, some $10,876,000 of funds for infrastructural and maintenance projects, the creation of a splash pad at Heritage Park, and the hiring of 14 full-time employees, including two police personnel, two water maintenance workers, and seven firefighter/paramedics.

Another highlight is the over $300,000 of funding allotted for improvements to Mulligans Golf and Games, which include a new irrigation pump, overhauling the lighting in the mini golf course, changes to the baseball netting, a replacement satellite box, and seven new golf carts plus a lawn mower.

There are a few areas where South Jordan’s revenues have started to dip from previous years. One of the most prominent areas is in licensing permits, which are projected to be down nearly half a million dollars from last year. This is mostly because South

Jordan’s financial department wants to play things safe, and not rely too heavily on revenue that they may or may not actually receive.

“You know, as we were working in the budget, we weren’t sure what was going to happen—you know, COVID times and whatnot. And we still are in that uncertain time.

And so we are budgeting a little lower than where we ended up in 2019-2020,” Naidu said. “We are doing a lot of permits, and so that revenue may come back. As they come back, we will readjust to where it will be. But at least for now, this is just the budget where we felt comfortable that it would be a good projection, where we will definitely realize that revenue.”

“Where Utah’s tax structure does not allow for inflation capture in property taxes we will be facing difficult decision as it relates to taxes and services,” City Manager Whatcott wrote in the tentative budget. “Without more commercial base property taxes the city will continue to find it harder to meet the growth related service demands. Municipal budgets are strongest when they have diversified revenue streams and when cities’ taxation system aligns with their economies.”

The new budget keeps South Jordan’s debt ratio pretty low, according to Whatcott,

which helps the city maintain an enviable triple-A credit rating in its general fund. He doesn’t want to get complacent, though.

“We must be wise and prudent in our borrowing of money; knowing however, that we will have to maintain our investment in infrastructure and to add desired public amenities as needed by our residents. We are committed to maintain fiscal policies that strengthen our core service levels and sustain our reserves into the future. That may mean that property tax will have to be evaluated over time,” wrote Whatcott. l

How to successfully land a job – ask an Elk Ridge ninth-grader

lk Ridge Middle School ninthgrader Jackson Shortridge acknowledges he was a little nervous even though he reviewed some possible interview questions and prepared his resume for an interview.

As he sat in his shirt and tie across from the interviewer, he gave an elevator pitch about who he was and why he would be the best choice for the job.

“I highlighted my skills, experience, and qualities I have,” explained the honor roll student, who said he talked about his school and church leadership roles. “It was all pretty much straightforward.”

Jackson was one of about 400 ninth-grade students who participated in mock job interviews this spring at his school as part of a way to help students “present themselves in a professional manner and gain that experience with interviewing and preparing resumes,” said Principal Curtis Jenson.

“It has been good to have students learn what they need and have this experience before they interview for their first jobs or internships,” he said about the mock interviews that replaced the traditional Reality Town last year.

Eighth graders participated in job shadows that they arranged on the same day as part of their college and career readiness.

Jackson said he was given the advice from the interviewer to list more skills and experiences on his resume, a tip that many interviewers shared with students. Some interviewers suggested students even look for ways they can get more involved, have more leadership experience and provide service to the community since they all are factors interviewers look

at as ways they stand out from others interviewing for the same position.

Volunteer Julie Good remembered her first experience going in for a job interview.

“I wasn’t as prepared as I should have been. I wanted to come help students, so they have that experience and practice,” she said. “I’ve been impressed that with whatever experience they do have, they have included it in their resume and are taking what they’ve learned to how it applies to a job.”

Counselor Paul Bennett said that students were coached in resume writing and interviewing beforehand.

“They were given some basic interview questions, told to prepare a 60-second elevator speech to introduce themselves and to dress nicely,” he said.

Counseling Assistants Krista Anderson and Stephanie Hess worked with students during their English/ Language Arts classes on the interview skills as well as showing them a video of Jenson and former assistant principal Spencer Campbell demonstrating a good and poor interview, respectfully.

“We worked with students before spring break so then they could practice skills and create their resumes during spring break,” Hess said.

“Some students are incredibly nervous, so this is a good experience to have a job interview in a safe place.

Some last year did so well that interviewers have offered them jobs.”

Ninth grader Kelsey Brown was excited and felt prepared.

“He asked me questions about my skills, a challenge I faced and how I overcame it, how to resolve an issue with an employee, and about one of my greatest accomplishments,” she

said. “I asked him about his work, and learned he has three jobs; we connected how we tend to overwork ourselves, so he gave me tips to avoid stressing myself in the future. It was a great experience as I’m looking to start in a job immediately.”

Her interviewer, Derek Yoder, whose ninth-grade son prepared his own resume, has hired personnel before.

“It can be an intimidating process, but I asked some of the same questions I would in the real world,” he said. “It’s good that these students are getting a taste of what this is like and can take advice to heart. It’s important they learn how to carry themselves and how to be prepared.”

After their interviews, students shared what the interviewer said they did well as well as something well as well as one thing they could improve upon. They also were rated on a 1-5 ranking on several things such as if they had good eye contact and good posture or if students spoke clearly and provided answers with details.

Some interviewers said they were impressed with students’ responses of how they stand out from their peers and why they should be hired as well as their lasting impressions when they respond to the question, “Is there anything else you would like to tell me about yourself?”

Anderson said that was something they reminded students.

“We tell them, these other students are your competition, so think of it as that, and share with them what makes you the best choice,” she said.

“It’s not an easy task to talk about themselves, but we’re hoping that they understand these skills are ones they will be using the rest of their lives.” l

Legacy Celebrates a Quarter Century in South Jordan G ACCEPTIN

I

t was 25 years ago when Legacy Retirement, one of the first independent living communities of its kind, first sprouted in the South Jordan community. It was 20 years ago when Legacy House, the assisted living and memory care center, grew right next to it.

And it’s every day that Legacy staff aim to connect on a deeper level with its residents.

“If I go a day where I don’t get some time to chit chat and put your arm around somebody and make someone’s day, it almost feels like a wasted day,” said Ed Perkes, the executive director at Legacy Retirement for the last five years. “That’s the main point for me to work, it’s to help them and brighten their day.”

That mindset stems from what employees call a “personal touch culture” ingrained in each one of them.

One resident had to be run to the hospital on a weekend, driven there by Perkes himself. The resident has no children or family and called Perkes telling him he’s the best son he’s ever had.

“There are residents that have been here for years, that feel like my family,” Perkes said. “That kind of connection that’s beyond just customer-employee.

There’s a very tight, heart-to-heart connection.”

Tara Bencosme is the recreation director and worked at Legacy South Jordan for almost all of those 25 years, 23 to be exact. She says it’s all about the personal.

“It’s not the same, but a different connection,” Bencosme said. “That’s why it’s a heart-to-heart because it’s different and personal to each person.”

That heart-to-heart connection is exactly what they look for at both Legacy Retirement and Legacy House.

One Legacy employee had a brain tumor. Before she recovered fully, she was already back visiting with each resident.

It’s people with that kind of love and care that Legacy wants working for them.

“You can train certain abilities,” Regional Director Jay Robb said. “But how to interact with people, you can’t train that. You either have it or you don’t. That is an important part of who we are and how we hire.”

That’s part of what Legacy aims to celebrate as the independent living location reaches a quarter century and the assisted living and memory care center enters its third decade.

Legacy will host an open house of both buildings on June 17, 4-7 p.m.

The two buildings, located a stone’s throw from the South Jordan Temple, have recently completed a remodel, giving the buildings a modern, fresh look. The $1.4 million upgrade represents the owner’s desire to reinvest in what has become a community cornerstone with new carpets, lighting, paint, fixtures and furniture.

Rooms are being remodeled as they become available.

Of the Legacy locations that now span five states, the South Jordan location was the first one. Those 20 and 25 years are significant Bencosme points out, because they don’t have to worry about being sold every couple years.

“The longevity really sells,” she said.

Ownership has never changed hands, only passed onto family members. Decades’ worth of experience is hard to find, especially with such little turnover among the staff.

“We do have that experience, that culture, that we’ve been perfecting and refining for 20-25 years,” said Melanie Pulidi, marketing director of Legacy House.

Residents notice the professionalism and competence that perhaps provide a certain note of inspiration when they first experience Legacy.

“The minute we entered the front door and stepped into the lobby of Legacy Retirement, something hit me so strongly that I could not deny it,” said Blain, a resident.

“We had another appointment and I said, ‘Cancel it. This is my new home.’ I have never regretted the move.”

Residents love Legacy for its location next to the temple, but maybe more importantly what Blain felt as he entered the door.

“Potential residents who tour Legacy, leave with a warm heart. ‘It’s the feeling’, they all say, ‘I can’t describe it. It just feels right,’”said Leilani Palmer, Marketing Director for Legacy Retirement. “That says to me we’re warm, personal and friendly. We try to make those who come through our front doors feel welcome and glad they came; like the comforts of home.”

Legacy has been around so long that employees become residents. Second generations are also coming through the centers.

“We’ve had well over 1,000 people live here,” Perkes said. “Many that call have had a great aunt or some family member that lived here. Now they’re looking for themselves.”

Family is an essential root to everything Legacy does.

From its owners to how they welcome extended families to have Christmas parties and celebrations.

“We want them to come in and have fun with your loved one,” Palmer said.

Last year, they had seniors celebrate seniors for high school graduates.

Independent living is one step beyond a senior center, but not assisted living. However, Legacy in South Jordan has an advantage that most don’t: a continuous care campus.

There’s the retirement community, but right next door is the assisted living and memory care.

“People really have the ability to age in place here,” Robb said.

Once someone makes the decision to no longer manage a home or would like a lifestyle with more social interactions, they’re still going to age and have additional needs. It can be tough to shop, looking for another place.

“Here you’ve got the same concept, same philosophy, basic staff and caregivers,” Robb said. “It’s a really easy transition from one to the other.”

The South Jordan locations have planted roots, making it a community destination for celebrations of all kinds.

From high school reunions such as the Jordan Beetdiggers class of 1951, to mission reunions, PTA meetings, parades, fashion shows and Sons and Daughters of Utah Pioneers meetings, Legacy is a place for the community.

Notably, Legacy will host its annual car show on August 28 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. There will be classics, diesels and hot rods as well as prizes, free food and entertainment.

Fundraisers are also held here where thousands have been raised for Neuroworx, Make-A-Wish, Salvation Army, Alzheimer’s and much, much more.

he first ever soap box derby was held in Highland Park on April 24 sponsored

by Live Daybreak. Participants were able to choose from two race divisions, the stock car division for ages 10 to 18 and freestyle division for ages 12 and older. The stock cars were made from prefabricated kits and freestyle cars were made from scratch. The event was open to everyone in the region and the registration fee was $20.

To build any soap box derby car takes time and money, that was especially true for the stock car division, with prices ranging from $200-$800 a kit, not including the cost to wrap the exterior of the cars. An inspection of all the entries was done on April 15 to check the cars for braking, steering, and proper wheels. After inspection there were 16 stock cars and 5 freestyle cars cleared to race.

Also held the night of the inspection was a contest for best wrap.

The winner for best wrap for the stock division went to the Daybreak beer club car and the car representing Lake Village took second place. The owners of the first and second place wrapped cars were Daybreak residents Lisa and Matt Radke.

“I like to be involved in the events if I can be,” Radke said.

Radke graciously bestowed the opportunity to race the stock cars to her neighbors, 11-year-old brothers, Brayden and Rowen Andersen. The brothers at one point were racing side by side, Brayden drove the car representing the local Daybreak beer club and Rowen drove the car representing Lake Village. The beer club won second place overall

in the stock car race. The Radke’s took home three custom-made metal trophies overall.

“We thought why not let the kids in our neighborhood race the cars and make memories,” Radke said.

by side and two competitors loaded up their cars by securing them onto slightly elevated ramps that were placed at the starting line. As soon as the horn blew, the cars let gravity do the work as racers were responsible for steering down 750 feet of paved road towards the finish line.

“This is kind of a retro activity, in the days gone by, seeing dads building cars with their kids, that’s what it’s all about,” Dan Rodgerson said, director of LiveDaybreak.

One such dad, and mom, were Daybreak residents, Joe and Marissa McBride, who built a freestyle car with their children. Their 12-year-old daughter Maevie McBride, competed and won second place despite never competing in a race prior. The family’s freestyle box car was named razor crest and their inspiration for the design and colors came from the Mandalorian.

“For sure we will do this every year,” McBride said. “We hope they amp it up next time with ramps and timed races.”

The McBride family, like many other Daybreak residents, were made aware of the event via a resident email and were very eager to participate.

“The kids collected pallets for months,” McBride said. “Our build took a month and lots of duct tape.”

AAI builds, races two cars in inaugural Daybreak Soap Box Derby

self-described “daredevil,” 15-year-old Nellie Brauer was the driver for the American Academy of Innovation’s Titanium Knight car in the inaugural Daybreak Soap Box Derby’s stock division.

“I’m excited; I’m a big adrenaline junkie,” she said on the day she was to test-drive the silver and black car after its inspection.

“I like aggressive sports. I have an interest in cars and how they work. It would be cool if this was my first step to racing (NASCAR).”

She and her robotics teammates were putting the final touches on that car as well as a second car they built, called, Separation of Church and State, driven by her classmate, Leo Hazembuller.

Both the cars were donated to the school.

Nellie’s was given anonymously from a community sponsor while Leo’s was given

by Pastor David Henderson and the non-denomination Neighborhood Church, hence its namesake.

“One of our core values is caring about relationships,” Henderson said about the church that will launch in September 2022.

“I look back at my middle and high school days and there were teachers who were most formable in my life.”

Daybreak partnered the two together and Henderson said it works out as a “beautiful accident” as they’re able to be involved with the construction and racing of the car.

“We don’t want people to just come to us. We want to bring light, joy, and hope into the world and hope this soap box car racing down the track does that,” he said. “Sponsoring this car works out perfect. This is our neighborhood.”

He and his wife put on the Neighborhood Church decal while the team Velcroed the cushion around the driver’s pit. The final step was the official soap box derby decal to adhere — or so they thought.

While the assembled of the cars was outside the normalcy of the robotics club, which has built different-sized robots to compete in specified challenges, car construction was not its forte. Still, the team was up for the challenge.

“The first car was donated in March and a student was taking it on to build as a project,” said Danielle Cannon, who advises the robotics team. “When the second car was donated three weeks ago, Mr. Jones (the school’s principal) asked us if we’d like to take both of them on as a project because apparently, the student wasn’t able to complete the project. We jumped in having just finished with our robotics season and haven’t had a day off.”

About five high school and two junior high students regularly contributed, working about 16 hours after school to build the cars.

That’s different than the approach they take with building robots, sophomore Jed Johnson said.

“Building a derby car is different than building a robot; it’s directions versus trial-and-error,” he said.

Junior Mikayli Cannon agreed: “We learned to put the soap box derby car together as a team; it’s interesting after building robots for years.”

The cars have different shapes as the Titanium Knight car was designed for a taller driver. Both cars weigh 73 pounds and allow 270 pounds maximum weight.

“We asked for volunteers to drive and then we decided by who fits in the cars,” their adviser said. “The cars are numbered after our team robotics numbers.”

Before passing inspection, the team learned they needed to redo both cars’ steering systems as they were in backwards, Nellie said.

“It’s something they haven’t done before,” Cannon said. “If we were to do this again, we’d need a longer building process.

I’d also advise future people who do this to paint the shells before attaching it to the base.

It proved more difficult afterward. We also learned Velcro works better than glue when adhering foam around the driver.”

Even during the double-elimination race, Nellie took tools to tighten her car’s brakes before she put on the red helmet to race the track.

Fans lined the course, which boarded Highland Park on the west, an empty field on the east. Twenty-two stock cars were registered. There also was a freestyle division, which allowed for creativity in the design.

The teams were racing for bragging rights as well as some imaginative trophies.

In the first race, both cars lost. Leo driving Separation of Church and State lost

to Zac Bradshaw’s car, while Nellie and the Titanium Knight car was inched out by Bella White Mountain America car, one of two cars built by Herriman High students, and one of a handful driven by another female driver.

“It was neck-and-neck and she barely won,” Nellie said.

She learned from the first race to lean forward and put her head down more to become streamlined and aerodynamic. She also joked that she was eating a French fry to add more weight to her car to help her down the slight incline.

“I’d prefer it to be [steeper] and [scarier],” Nellie added while waiting for her car to be loaded and driven to the top for her next race.

Once in the consolation bracket, race after race, the two AAI drivers won — unlike sponsor Henderson’s experience with a miniaturized pinewood derby race where he said in third grade his best placement was “best paint job” for the sparkly blue coat which his Lego man drove.

Nellie had three more races until she raced Lake Village’s car three times — the first two ending in ties so they had to re-race.

With a camera set up at the finish in the third race, she lost, ending Titanium Knight’s run.

Leo won five more races before falling to the second-place finisher.

Titanium Knight’s first loss that put them in the consolation round was to the eventual champion, Herriman High junior Isabelle Jeffress.

While Nellie said in the future, she’d like to race in the freestyle division, Cannon said that the students said they were talking about adding a helicopter blade to a car to see if it would fly, or perhaps, add a chain drive and drive it robotically, without a physical driver.

“Those are some of the engineering ideas the kids have,” she said. “They’re creative and think outside the box.” l

Paradigm students support Operation Underground Railroad, contribute $25K

S

tudents smashed whipped cream-topped tuna pies in their classmates’ faces. They held planks above egg until their arms gave out, smashing yolks and whites all over their shirts. They drank some sort of concoction of pickle juice with grossed-out reactions.

It was a fun celebration as a result of raising $25,187 in a month-long spring fundraising effort to support Operation Underground Railroad, an organization that has been dedicated to rescue children from sex trafficking and sexual exploitation since 2013.

“We had a conservative goal of $15,000 because we weren’t sure how people would respond during COVID-19,” said Paradigm teacher /mentor and student government adviser Keith Debono, who added that one eighth-grade student brought in close to $1,200 on his own. “I was just blown away by the effort of the students and the support of our community.”

As a result of surpassing that goal, school director Fernando Seminario promised to “live in a fishbowl” or a glass conference room during a week in May. Student government boys were to wear ringlets from permanents in their hair and sport 2-inch fake nails as part of the fun.

About 380 Paradigm High students, or scholars as they’re called, exceeded last

year’s record of $21,000, which was donated to Australia’s recovery efforts from their bush fires that destroyed an area the size of North Dakota.

“The scholar cabinet with its congress picked a charity that affects them,” Debono said. “The students realize the seriousness of the situation and can relate to them statically as some of the kids taken are in this same age group. It’s a sensitive and serious issue that inspired them and more kids embraced and got behind this effort.”

Sophomore Glori Huff said it was an issue she and her classmates are passionate about.

“Having kids our age not get to live a life we do — to smile, to know joys and happiness — to be stuck in a cage and not have freedom and love is wrong; we have to do something,” she said.

Huff said her grandmother was snatched up at age seven when she was walking her dog in Nevada. She wasn’t rescued in Arizona until she had doubled her age.

“She doesn’t talk much about it, but she started crying tears of joy when I told her what we were doing and how much was raised,” Huff said.

The scholars competed in their seminar classes, two rooms on a team. Debono’s B3/4

and Jennifer Lattin’s B1/2 raised $6,685.56 as the winning alliance, but everyone did their part, class president Jill Smith said.

“A lot of us text our family and friends,” she said. “Harmons allowed us to fundraise at their store, so we educated people about Operation Underground Railroad, answered

their questions and they gave generously.”

Smith, who had 3-foot-long hair, cut 20 inches off her hair and sold it for $200, which she donated.

“It was fun to watch the class come together,” she said. “Every child deserves the right to lead a safe life, to be safe at home.

This is raising awareness and giving to help those kids. We’re a small school so this is so rewarding.”

Huff agreed: “It felt like we were a family this year. We all did about everything to raise funds.”

Huff sold her charcoal and watercolor drawings of pets and caricatures to donate $250 to the cause. Her younger sister went door-to-door and also raised about $150 at a nearby Smith’s from donations.

The school also held various events such as a comedy night, a performing arts concert, a telethon, a slip-and-slide party, a carnival, a Sadie Hawkins dance, and penny wars. Even the library donated its fines to the cause.

Senior Josie Hall said that every year, “it gets better, and we become more dedicated. It’s become a part of who we are as Paradigm Patriots and it goes to good causes every year.”

Her class set up a GoFundMe page on social media to bring in $1,000. They spent four hours walking around the neighborhood after baking cookies to sell them or ask for donations.

“One person bought one dozen for $50.

They just wanted to donate whatever they had and ask how they could help,” she said.

“I was surprised how generous people were.

We went to some houses and they said to come back because they didn’t have cash; in the meantime, they went to the bank to get some money to donate.”

This was the first time Hall had heard about the plight of Operation Underground Railroad children.

“I’m so empathetic. I struggled with this when I heard about it,” she said. “I realized how good my life is with my loving family and ability to have an education. I learned how these regular children leading regular lives are abused and mistreated so badly. I had to support them. I want everyone to have what I have.”

Dive into summer fun at Salt Lake County outdoor pools

I

f you needed another sign that things were returning to normal, here’s a good one: the Salt Lake County Parks and Recreation outdoor pools opened Memorial Day weekend! The pools are scattered throughout the county and will stay open through the summer.

The county advises patrons to check their website at www. slco.org for updates on COVID restrictions including mask requirements. In general, those who are fully vaccinated do not need to wear masks.

Most of the pools have fun features like lap lanes, leisure areas, zero-depth entry, ADA accessibility, kids play areas, diving boards, sunbathing areas or slides.

All have lifeguards on duty during operating hours.

Opening hours, times and prices differ slightly for each location, so it’s wise to call ahead.

And for an extra fun and exclusive event, many of the pools are available after hours to rent for private parties.

Utah Employment Exceeds Pre-Pandemic Levels

O

ne year after the economic recession caused by the coronavirus pandemic began, Utah’s economy has emerged as one of the strongest in the nation. Utah’s unemployment rate in April was 2.8%, down from 2.9% in March and nearly as low as it was before the pandemic.

Utah is now tied with South Dakota and Nebraska for the lowest unemployment in the nation.

Utah also has the second-highest job growth in the nation, ticking up 2.5% in the last 24 months. This is just behind Idaho’s job growth of 3.9% in the same time period. In fact, Utah and Idaho are the only two states that have added jobs in the last two years. Utah added 35,600 jobs over the past two years, with professional and business services (+15,700) leading the growth. Other sectors that saw notable gains were construction (+11,900); trade, transportation and utilities (+9,800); financial activities (+8,800); and manufacturing (+6,900).

However, the government (-10,500); leisure and hospitality (-7,600); and natural resources (-1,400) sectors have all lost jobs in the past 24 months.

While the strong job market and low unemployment are very positive for Utah, our state is once again struggling with a labor shortage. Simply put, there are not enough people in the Utah labor force to meet demand for workers. If this continues for too long, it could constrain potential economic growth, especially for smaller companies that must compete with larger employers for these workers.

Metcalf returns home to the Utah Grizzlies

etcalf is a household name amongst Utah hockey fans.

Garrett Metcalf has made the Utah Grizzlies his first stop in what he hopes is a long professional career.

“I was like two or three when I started skating,” Metcalf said. “Then I think my first organized games came when I was five or six. I started playing in the Salt Lake County lightning program until I was about 14 years old.”

His father Steve played on the Highland High School team and by his own admission was not very good so he turned his love of the game into more than 25 years of hockey refereeing. Many remember him as someone who gave his all to hockey.

“Steve trained me as an official,” current ECHL linesman Jim Mckenna said. “He was the top guy in the IHL (International Hockey League). I asked him for pointers and he was always willing to give, anything he did, he did with a love for hockey. He was willing to give back.”

Metcalf recalled memories of his dad refereeing.

“My brother and I grew up going to the games with our dad and I spent many years at the Maverik Center. It has now come full circle and for me to play my first year of pro hockey there is pretty special,” Metcalf said.

His hockey career started at home, on the driveway.

“We had a net and my brother started taping pillows to my legs and gave me a helmet and glove. He told me to stand in front of the net,” he said. “One time in Phoenix I ran across some equipment in a store. I begged my dad to buy them. I knew he would not pay full price, but it was on clearance.

I told him they were on sale. He called my mom and they

knew that I was never going back.”

He has logged lots of years on the ice to get to this point in his career.

“I spent a lot of summers early at the rink. My dad and I would get out to the oval (Kearns Olympic Oval). I would be on the ice at 4:45 in the morning before school. I did that multiple times a month. I had the support of my parents to get me there and they took me all across the country. I have been very blessed,” Metcalf said.

Metcalf was drafted by the National Hockey Leagues Anaheim Ducks in the sixth round of the 2015 amateur draft.

“It was a special moment to be drafted. It is something I will cherish the rest of my life,” Metcalf said.

His player rights are still owned by the Ducks. He is under a professional tryout contract. Those contracts are short-term deals that generally only pay per diem. After his draft rights expire in August he can actively pursue a player contract and may end up in the American Hockey League or East Coast Hockey League.

He has enjoyed his time with the Grizzlies.

“It is very special to be at home. I moved away from home when I was 15 and have not spent more than five days at home since then, but we are cherishing this time we all have together. I have stayed in touch with friends. It has been cool to have all of the support. At games I see familiar faces in the crowd,” Metcalf said.

As a goalie he is competing for playing time with contracted players already on big league clubs.

He has learned new things playing professional hockey and playing with the Grizzlies has been difficult at times.

“We have struggled to score goals, but the guys have worked hard. For my first taste of pro hockey I have seen some success from my work habits and playing with an unbelievable group that has been nothing but supportive,” he said.

The Grizzlies are scheduled to close the regular season June 5-7. At press time they stand in fourth place and could be in the ECHL playoffs. l

Salt Lake County marks 75 years of Parks and Recreation with tree planting

eighbors, elected officials, and community members joined together on a sunny day to kickoff a summer-long celebration at Evergreen Park May 14. Mayor of Salt Lake County, Jenny Wilson recognized Salt Lake County Parks and Recreation’s 75th birthday. Evergreen Park was chosen because it was the first in what is now over 100 park spaces across the valley managed

by Salt Lake County Parks and Recreation. The acquisition of Evergreen Park 75 years ago on May 11, 1946 launched what has now grown into one of the largest parks, trails, recreation, and open space management organizations in the region. Evergreen Park, located at 2230 E. 3425 South, is a beloved jewel of the community that had many members in attendance reminiscing about their childhoods.

Wilson had fond memories of playing at Evergreen Park. She said, “I think the 75-year history of Parks and Recreation is to be noted. I have a particular love of this park because I remembered it from my childhood. I mentioned the pumpkin Cinderella-esque playground round item, and I remember when we came in here to update the park with the building of the community rec center, there was a lot of love for this park but also for that sculpture.”

Jeff Silvestrini, mayor of Millcreek, said, “The pumpkin is really beautiful, and it has a lot of memories for people that grew up in this park like Mayor Wilson, and for our kids who still play on it.”

the collaboration between Ivory Homes, Tree Utah, Salt Lake County Park and Recreation, and the county started in fall 2020 after a major windstorm. May said, “Ivory homes, to help the community address the loss of numerous trees, the replanting efforts began. We also actually planted a bunch of trees with the Jordan River Commission in Millcreek on the Jordan River this spring with students from major high schools as well.”

Silvestrini added, “I just think that this is a terrific public-private partnership that we have great private sponsors with Ivory and others and Tree Utah and the county. It’s really nice to see us working together on something that’s worthwhile that not only beautifies this park and replaces some of the trees that were taken by the…storm, but it helps with air quality, it helps with keeping our environment cooler, it helps with climate, it’s really important work.”

May said, “I was doing a walk-thru last week and noticed there wasn’t a single evergreen in Evergreen Park, and I wanted to make sure we planted evergreens.” Silvestrini added, “It’s Evergreen Avenue, that’s where it got its name from.” Wilson said, “This is a great small park, and one of the jewels in the county park system. It’s just great to be here on the 75th anniversary in a great community, in a park that’s quite loved.”

Fun, flexibility key to teaching, learning during the pandemic year at Welby Elementary

ear-end assessments provide teachers data on how well their students learned and how to prepare for next year.

But during a year like this past one during the COVID-19 pandemic, Welby Elementary teacher Carolyn Smith knows students need a bit of “normalcy” in their days.

“I think we have found ways to have fun in different ways,” she said. “We can still go outside, and we can still play games. Instead of interactive touching games, the kids have loved playing Kahoot multiplication games.

They are having so much fun, they don’t realize they’re learning. Today, instead of working in groups, my kids all made their own game boards. So, we just learn to do things in different ways, and they still have a blast.”

One thing Smith has done through the pandemic is continue with Lunch Bunch, an opportunity for students to relax and join the teacher for lunch.

“We just try to spread ourselves out beyond the blanket instead of sitting close together,” she said. “We moved it outside, so we were more comfortable, but the whole thing is having time together outside of class and eating with the teacher. It’s just a big deal to them and they love it. It’s [the] little things that mean a lot to them.”

Smith said there have been concerted efforts throughout the faculty and PTA to en-

sure students are having as much of a normal year as possible.

“The PTA is on fire. They have just done amazing things in spite of COVID. They’ve held virtual Bingo, they decorated the faculty room, they gave each kid a token for our book vending machine, they gave the kids water bottles and got water bottle filling machines in our school,” she said, adding that during the winter holidays they provided the school community videos of faculty reading holiday books. “They really found ways to connect around COVID.” At the end of the year, instead of hosting the scheduled field day, Welby students were to run the Wildcat Mile with their principal, Aaron Ichimuru.

“We won’t run it all together, but it will be more of a mini-Olympics day so we’ll just adjust, and they still will have fun,” Smith said.

The third-grade teachers created fun with the end-of-the-year ABC activities where students were able to celebrate their ABCs celebrating each letter with a different activity, such as A being bring a stuffed animal to school or B for blowing bubbles, and C sporting crazy hair.

Earlier, they were able to do Dr. Seuss activities, but instead of switching classrooms, they just traded activities to reduce

Smith also had students reading books about mice, such as “Tales of Despereaux,” and then, they’d do quiet activities.

“We have a quiet-as-a-mouse day and do mouse activities and watch a little mouse video and do things that are silent that they could do individually at their desks. We’ve had an apple day and a popcorn day and tie activities into our reading or math. They’re still learning academically, but they’re having fun and during this year, that is something they especially needed,” she said. “We have worked so hard, and they have made so many strides, they have missed the fun of learning, so we want to make sure they’re having those experiences. The kids here are excited to be here. They’ve had a lot of ups and downs, and they’ve had to be flexible. We appreciate the opportunity to be together and to learn and to be able to have activities, be they ever so adjusted to COVID restrictions.”

Smith, too, who earlier in the year admitted she likes to be organized and plan, has learned to adapt. While she still has two weeks of lesson plans ready in case she may need to quarantine, and has all her students able to log on to online learning should they ever need to make that jump, she has learned that during COVID-19 some things take longer, and she needs to adjust.

“Things have loosened up. We still wear masks, which I have loved helping result in the lack of a cold and flu season, but now we’re three feet apart instead of six feet,” she said. “There are some good things that have resulted. I wouldn’t mind if zoom parent-teacher conferences stayed. The majority of parents loved them. I talked to them at their convenience. I talked to them at the gym, in a parked car, in their office, in their kitchen, at a soccer game. I talked to them wherever they were, when they were available, and they didn’t have to come into school and coordinate times.”

She also likes the flexibility of Fridays where she is able to give instruction to those who need intervention or those who have extended learning opportunities. She also likes Zoom assemblies so “everyone gets a frontrow seat and can hear” although at times, “it would be fun to be together for the hoopla.”

Even on this spring day as they were gearing up to leave their portable for lunch in the cafeteria, they smelled tar.

Smith exited the portable classroom ahead of the classroom to discover a crew was patching the blacktop. She made a game of it with her students, challenging them to take giant steps to cross over the fresh tar.

“It’s just another day; you have to go with the flow,” she said. “Teaching is totally flexible. You always have to have a plan B and you usually get to C, D,and E. That’s something I’ve learned time and time again during COVID, but you make the best of it and instead of having it be a hassle, you make it a game and it becomes a fun memory.

This year, I feel we have been walking a tight rope, but we’ve made it through. We’ve conquered the mountain, we’re still alive, we’ve done it and it’s been hard sometimes, but it’s an accomplishment.” l

our state, Governor Spencer Cox recently discontinued Utah’s participation in those earlier mentioned federal unemployment subsidies. This was done, in part, to combat what are called “perverse incentives,” meaning incentives that attempt to solve a problem but actually prolong or worsen the problems they are meant to solve. In this case, federal unemployment subsidies were intended to help those who could not find employment, but by continuing these benefits in good economic times, we would be disincentivizing those who are unemployed from finding gainful employment in a strong job market. We want government to avoid perverse incentives, and instead encourage people to find a long-term path to success.

There are certainly extenuating circumstances that make it difficult for people to work, but for those who can work, please know that there are plenty of people hiring and you are most certainly wanted! Before COVID, when the hubbie and I used to travel, I’d book us in places that provided breakfast, because I love me a good breakfast buffet.

At one hotel, the breakfast bar offered freshly squeezed grapefruit juice and I couldn’t resist. I don’t usually drink fruit juice because it has so much sugar, which is hilarious because I have no problem downing an entire box of Milk Duds.

Anyway. I poured myself a cup of beautiful, pink grapefruit juice and was walking back to our table when a herd of unruly children came dashing around the corner and crashed into me, spilling grapefruit juice all over my shirt and the floor.

I stood there dripping and waiting for an apology that never came. The monsters ran past me to fill their plates with bacon. I eyed them scornfully, poured more juice and put on my Hat of Judgement.

What kind of mother lets her kids douse perfect strangers with grapefruit juice? What heathen had failed to teach these kids manners?

I got back to my table and told my husband to move so I could take his seat because he had a better view of the dining room. I needed to see the parents of these miscreants and judge them accordingly.

Instead of shutting up, my brain brought up a memory of my daughters. We were at an all-you-can-eat-buffet and the girls were not sitting like civilized humans. They were fighting, dropping food all over the floor, running back for seconds and thirds, and taking every single brownie from the dessert bar.

They were animals. And I just sat there, so happy for the break from making dinner.

I’d been that mom I was judging. My daughters had often run amok. If I’d had a cell phone when my kids were little, I would have been on that phone all the damn time. I slowly removed my Hat of Judgement and reevaluated the current situation.

I turned to my husband and said, “It’s just juice. They’re just kids. She’s just a mom.”

He didn’t know what I was talking about, but he chewed his bacon, nodded, and said, “That’s good.”

Suddenly, I was teary-eyed and felt a camaraderie with this mother. She was in the trenches, doing her very best. Aren’t we all?

The more I practice dropping judgement, the easier my life is. It’s exhausting calling out everyone’s behavior. There are better ways to spend my time, like drinking fresh grapefruit juice and remembering when my kids were wild animals.

LOCAL ARTISTS DRAW A CROWD FOR FIRST ART ON THE TOWN

n May 1, the city of South Jordan hosted the first Art on the Town Event held at the South Jordan Towne Center from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. Artists and vendors were set up directly in front of City Hall and neighboring retail stores, and showcased many different forms of media in an effort to connect the community through art and expression.

For many artists and small business owners, the past year left little opportunity to connect face to face with the community at large and to showcase their talents and passions, due to the Covid-19 pandemic. This outdoor event was a way to connect residents to artists and their work while still maintaining a safe and comfortable environment.

The city worked closely with a local vendor management company, SoJo Markets LLC, and its owner Laura Gaillard, who runs the Daybreak farmer’s market, set to begin again on June 5.

“I love having it here in South Jordan, I sometimes feel like the north end of the valley gets a lot of things happening, and I love to have it open here, I feel like it gives our community a place to go, and strengthens it,” Laura Gaillard said, a Daybreak resident and owner of SoJo Markets.

The community was able to experience local artists like Mary Nielsen, who has been creating art all her life.

Nielsen’s philosophy of head to heart to hand has become a way of not only creating art but teaching it as well. Nielsen worked as a volunteer in public school art programs for many years and imparted the idea to students that art comes Mary Nielsen, a local artist, showcased her works in polymer clay and alcoholic ink at the Art on the Town Event.
