elby Elementary teacher Leslie Foltz was answering students’ questions in the front of the room as they were writing reminders in their planner. Her head was down, listening to one of the second graders so she didn’t take note of a few people initially walk into her classroom before members of the Jordan Education Foundation, Jordan School District Superintendent Anthony Godfrey, her family, Principal Aaron Ichimura and others came in to congratulate her on being one of the district’s outstanding teachers of the year.

“I was overwhelmed,” she said. “People kept walking in. I was still trying to process what was going as JEF came in with the principal and superintendent, then I saw my family and figured it out. I never dreamed I’d get this honor.”

Along with presenting her balloons and flowers, in came lunch for her from Café Rio and “I already had a Dr. Pepper on my desk, so I was set,” she said.

Foltz, however, was just one of Jordan School District’s outstanding teachers of the year—in a year that each school’s selection received a crystal award, a yard sign and $500, said Anne Gould of the Jordan Education Foundation.

“There were so many heartfelt applications, it was just too hard to select just a few,” she said. “So many teachers stepped up to bat that we needed to honor one from each school.”

Godfrey also acknowledged the teachers’ extraordinary efforts.

“It’s great to honor teachers at every school after seeing how hard they have worked through the pandemic, giving their Continued page 4

At Valley High, the entire faculty was honored.

Foltz, who has been teaching more than eight years, found her niche in fourth grade and became her school’s lead. After preparing for fourth graders with her team after the soft closure of schools in spring 2020, she learned that Ichimura needed a second grade teacher.

“I was willing to move; I want what’s best for students and so I learned second grade curriculum in a matter of days,” she said.

She applied and was granted a Donors Choose grant to get materials needed to teach the younger grade. She also stepped up to teach ArtSmart in her class, something that usually parents volunteer for, but because of the pandemic, they weren’t allowed to enter the school building.

“I wanted the year to have as much normalcy as it could,” she said. “I knew they couldn’t have storytime on the carpet, but we could do art and they could have portfolios to take home of their work at the end of the year.

It was one more thing to handle and we’re all feeling pulled 100 different ways, but I thought it was important. This crystal reminds me of what we do and the importance of it, even on the hardest days.”

that helped Foltz this year.

“What I’ve learned most during the pandemic is calmness during chaos,” she said.

“I learned to leave everything at the door and do my job first, and when I’m with the second graders, I focused about each one of them and balanced academics with their social-emotional needs. I’ve love second grade and I love dual immersion and teaching English all day, but I miss teaching math and miss my fourth graders.”

Foltz is planning to return to teach neighborhood students in the upper grade this fall.

In Bouwhuis’ nomination, colleagues pointed out that she helped create an online curriculum for the PE program and created an intervention program for students to improve their grades all while continuing to have “amazing relationships” with students and student-athletes.

“Amanda Mair laughs, cries and struggles with her students; she fights for them,” a nomination said. She is known by her colleagues for leaving kind notes “and remembers details and asks after their lives in a most sincere and caring way,” even while navigating through COVID-19. “[She] just went above and beyond at every turn to make sure her students had every opportunity to succeed.”

Hogan has been innovative and found new ways to intergrade technology to engage students. So when the pandemic hit, Hogan was ready and was able to help others make

the transition and not only focus on her students’ academic success, but with their emotional and social well-being, according to the nomination, which added, “Despite being such a great teacher, Andrea will be completely mortified by the attention, she is getting for this award. She loves to quietly support in the background, coaching and moving people in the right direction.”

Munro was “somewhat behind” using technology prior to 2020, his nomination stated, but now is classified as “exceptional.”

He also is known to be a student advocate, often tutoring students afterschool or ensuring they’re allowed to participate in the music program—and he is noted to “make all of us laugh.”

Pierson is known for her organizational skills and made online schoolwork easy with clear instructions. The nomination said “She is amazing, the best teacher I have ever had” and “the epitome of a fabulous teacher.”

Jarvis not only made the switch last year from in-person to virtual learning by helping students and parents navigate the “stressful situation by remaining flexible, calm and organized,” but she made herself available each day. She has continued to teach individually or in small groups while overseeing student council and Junior Achievement and basically working “12-hour days.”

Crane is described as an “exceptional leader” and a teacher who “preservers in the challenges by focusing on the positive.”

The nomination said, “Her optimism is contagious” and “Mrs. Crane turns something as negative as the pandemic into an opportunity for students to be celebrated and recognized.”

Rock typically can be found drinking Dr. Pepper between classes, but with her kindergartners, she is “friendly” with a “can-do” and “don’t-sweat-the-small-stuff” attitude.

Her nomination states: “Emily is the epitome of the type of steady, super flexible, always positive, super skilled and professional educator that every parent wants for their child.”

One of Handy’s colleagues described her tenacity: “She wasn’t going to let them fall through the cracks, just because it was COVID.” She is known to challenge students and explain a concept again and again to ensure students understand.

Velarde is described as a “go-getter and full of kindness” and “one, if not the most, optimistic people I know.” In the nomination, it said: “Staci is one of those rare individuals that has full understanding of problems and setbacks, but works to turn difficult situations into a positive learning experience.”

Oettli is known to differentiate learning to meet all the needs of her students and even videotaped math lessons in an engaging manner that was easy for students to learn the concepts during last spring’s shutdown of schools. In December, students wrote letters of appreciation to their teacher and as parents put it together, they told the nominator that it was impossible to read and not have tears came to their eyes because of her powerful impact on students’ lives.

The Valley High faculty was honored for its ability to provide connection, unity and love to overcome adversity, uncertainty and fear during the pandemic. Even while the teachers faced “fear, anxiety, pain and loss that 2020 brought to the world, their ability to battle through any and all personal struggles to be there for their students has been exemplary,” the nomination said, adding that “Valley has always prided itself on the magic that happens within our walls. The drive behind this magic is the relationships developed between teachers and students” including this hard year where faculty demonstrated “their grit, courage and love for students.” l

Arts Council seeks to beautify along Jordan River Trail

T

he gray slabs beneath the 106th South bridge near Mulligan’s didn’t have a lot of visual appeal.

As of June 9, that was no longer the case, as local artists were given an opportunity to transform the visually unappealing slabs into works of art. The project was sponsored by South Jordan Art’s Council, a committee of residents appointed by South Jordan City Council. This council provides support and assistance in the implementation of Arts programs and events to create a lifelong appreciation for the arts for South Jordan residents.

Amateur artists were encouraged to participate and were asked to submit past original artwork and design ideas. The artists and artwork were approved at the discretion of the South Jordan Art’s Council, and all those selected were Salt Lake County residents.

“We have had some good momentum with different art related activities,” Associate Director of Recreation Janell Payne said.

“We want to give everyone a chance for exposure.”

South Jordan resident Durga Ekambaram was among one of the artists selected to paint a mural along the trail. Ekambaram brought her vision as well as her culture into her mural. Originally from India, Ekambaram has called South Jordan home for more than three years and has spent a great deal of that time involved with art.

“I love the process,” Ekambaram said.

“I like to express my ethnicity or my diversity through my art.”

Former South Jordan resident Hollie Anderson also painted a mural along the trail. Anderson considers herself a chalk art-

ist and street painter and has participated in various festivals around the state. The mural trail project was yet another way to create public art. Her entry is called the “groovy fox” and combines her personal style while paying tribute to the nearby wildlife.

“My family spotted a fox at an art festival I participated in last year along the trail, and I knew he had to be the subject for this piece,” Anderson said.

Artists were assigned one, two or three panels along the trail depending on the size of their submission. Both Anderson and Ekambaram were given two panels each in which to bring their visions to life. Both used acrylic paint and their panels are side by side along the trail.

“I’m not a mural artist per se,” Ekambaram said. “The largest mural I’ve done is 4 feet on a wooden plank.”

According to Payne, the panels will rotate, or get switched out in the event that a panel doesn’t age well over time, or gets marked up by graffiti. Artists were given until June 20 to complete their panels, all of which have been a welcome sight to runners, walkers and bikers along the trail who stop to admire the work.

“We have a lot of people saying thank you for making the trail more attractive,” Payne said.

In a public space that had previously fallen victim to graffiti, the bridge underneath 106th South now offers something beautiful.

Legacy retirement home celebrates 25 years with new look

he Legacy Retirement center held an open house for residents, their families and the public on June 17.

The residence underwent a six-month long renovation that included new carpet and flooring, fresh paint, new cabinetry throughout the apartments, and a more open concept for the living and entertainment areas. Since its opening 25 years ago, the Legacy Retirement Residence of South Jordan has strived to embody care, hospitality and continuous improvement for its residents.

As part of the open house, family and spectators were given a glimpse of the new apartment upgrades, with a model apartment available for showing during the open house, as well as a tour of the amenities including a theater room, beauty and barber shop, fitness room, game room, country store, library, reading room, dining room and common areas. Food and drinks were served to visitors and residents as part of the open house celebration.

Legacy is home to approximately 140 residents, including Marguerite O’niones, originally of Indiana, who moved to the Salt Lake valley to be closer to her daughter and five grandsons. O’niones is 101 years young and has enjoyed being in Utah and being in the outdoors as much as possible.

“I enjoy being older,” O’niones said. “I have a nice apartment, and the food is good, and the ladies are friendly.”

Those looking to call Legacy home can choose from unfurnished studios, one bedroom, two bedrooms and two-bedroom suite rooms. Residents are able to bring their own furniture to their apartment, to create a more personal feeling. Each apartment has a full kitchen if residents prefer to cook their own meals, but according to staff member Amber Millington, most prefer to their three meals a day in the dining area with friends.

“I think the residents like the sense of independence here,” Millington said.

Those who come to live at Legacy can expect to have an enrichment of life, offering all the opportunities for independent living without the care and worry that can often accompany living alone. While some retirement communities can appear lonely and dull, the staff at Legacy help ensure that there are plenty of stimulating activities and events for residents to participate in.

“We are very social here,” Marketing Director Leilani Palmer said. “We like our residents to have activities; we like to keep them involved.”

time and all visitors were required to check in upon arrival. According to the website, all residents and staff were provided the opportunity to receive the vaccine and now residents can entertain an unlimited number of visitors and families throughout the day.

“It’s been neat to see how things how changed since the pandemic,” Millington said, who began working at Legacy last

Thanksgiving. “We still tried to have activities and have residents be social, but now compared to then, it is so much more lively.”

Legacy Retirement is not a nursing facility where residents come to spend their final days, but it is a thriving, independent living community where residents can enjoy being safe, comfortable and engaged.

Local librarian says library is still relevant to community

I

n an age where technology has caused so many traditional aspects of day-to-day living to become out dated, South Jordan librarian Anna Linner, believes that the local libraries still hold so much value to their communities. Since 1998 when she first began working at the library part time, Linner has seen the efforts the county library system has made to be an asset to the community through various programs and events.

“There is something for everyone at the library,” Linner said.

For families wanting their children to keep up with their reading, the library offers a summer reading program each year. This summer’s program runs from June 1 to July 31, and the theme is “Tails and Tales.” There are categories for all age ranges and those

who complete the challenges can win free books and entry in drawings.

“Families realize the benefits of the library system,” Linner said.

Even amid the pandemic, the library was able to find ways to provide reading materials to the public with the addition of curbside services. Patrons can go online and make appointments to have books brought to their car based on date and location. In addition, the collection of online reading materials expanded, allowing patrons e-book options as well as audiobook options.

“During the pandemic we utilized the eBooks on the library app LIBBY,” library patron Cheri Primm said.

For many parents, finding meaningful summer activities for the kids is no small

task. Primm has incorporated a weekly visit to the library with her kids Carly and Ryder.

“My kids are so excited to have the library back open and allowing us to come in,” Primm said.

Kids aren’t the only audience that can enjoy all the library has to offer, as there are programs and events for teens and adults— everything from homework help workshops, to college test prep, to book clubs, to lecture series, a lot of which are currently being offered free via Zoom. For teens, the annual ToshoCon Teen Anime contest will be held on Saturday, Sept. 25.

Linner shared that one library account can borrow up to 50 items. Those residents who saw more time afforded for reading brought on by the circumstances surrounding the pandemic, welcomed this amount of checked books at a time.

“Before the pandemic, I read like a dozen books total from the library; now I’m reading like crazy and getting dozens of books there per month,” said local patron Kim McCann.

Linner is not only a passionate library employee, she is herself a lifelong learner, earning a master’s of library sciences from Emporia State University in Kansas at the age of 50. Linner began her library tenure as a customer service specialist. Since then, she has worked in several branches of the library system around the Salt Lake valley.

Linner earned the title of librarian in 2017.

She and her family call South Jordan home and is currently employed at the South Jordan branch.

Associate Director of Community Engagement Matt McClain, who hired Linner back in 2017, recognized her compassion and her empathetic nature. Both are admirable qualities that patrons want to feel when they walk into a library.

“Creating welcoming spaces is a big part of the library’s values,” McClain said.

“When people visit the library and feel welcomed, that helps the library be a space where people want to be. And that is part of keeping the library relevant to our community.”

According to South Jordan Branch Manager Erin Rigby, the South Jordan branch will welcome back in-person programs such as the beloved story time in the fall.

“We have missed our in-person programs so much,” Rigby said.

The public library system continues to grow and expand bringing knowledge and warmth to the community. One of two new branches is expected in Daybreak in the Spring of 2022.

New Girl Scout troop in South Jordan empowers young girls

he Girl Scouts of America has been present in Utah for more than 100 years. Newly formed Troop 583, based in South Jordan, is now a part of that tradition and legacy of empowering young girls to become leaders and responsible citizens through a limitless number of activities. The newest troop is for the “daisy” age range, girls in pre-K, kindergarten and those entering first grade in the fall of 2021.

Troop leader and South Jordan resident Jennifer Bingman grew up in the Girl Scout program, learning so many worthwhile qualities as young girl that she continues to exemplify into adulthood and in her career as a master electrician.

“I learned a lot from the people I was meeting doing all these different projects,” Bingman said.

In an effort to remain COVID-compliant, the troop will hold its meetings at North Park, north of the equestrian center in South Jordan. Bingman said she is excited to have a solid team of co-leaders to work with, all themselves with different backgrounds and circumstances. background check. Some of the co-leaders have daughters in the troop, some just want to give back.

“I’ve always enjoyed helping people,” co-leader Ashley Fabert said. Although unable to go through the Girl Scout program herself as a young girl, Fabert said that it’s nice to see girls of different backgrounds being able to learn together.

“We’re going to teach the girls a lot of things,” Fabert said.

In Girl Scouts, there is no limit to the types of activities the girls can participate in whether that be outdoor activities such as canoeing, rock wall climbing and archery, or indoor activities such as a letter writing campaign, learning to code, sewing blankets and more. While the daisy age group is not able to participate in overnight camping the way the older girls are, there are plenty of options to keep them busy from planting a garden to putting on a skit. For each skill or concept that the daisy becomes fluent in, a badge or petal is given to wear on their tunics.

According to the daisy landing page of the GSU website, the Girl Scouts is a place where kindergarteners and first graders can learn social skills, be given stability in an ever-changing world and be built up both in and out of the classroom.

“The Girl Scouts gave me a place to fit in,” Bingman said.

For mom Sandra Johnson, the notion of enhanced social ability is what inspired her to get daughter Adilyn, 5, involved in the Girl Scout program. Johnson saw the new troop being advertised on social media and recognized the potential for building friendships and self-esteem.

“I thought that maybe if we had some kind of group that we could gather with it might help her build a little confidence,” Johnson said.

Girls Scouts is girl-led and therefore allows girls, even as young as 5 and 6 years of age, to have a voice in the types of skills and activities they want to participate in. It is within the Girl Scout program that girls learn how to be, according to the Girl Scout law, “… honest, fair, considerate and caring, courageous and strong …”

“We are a lot more than selling cookies,” Vice President of Marketing and Communications Callie Birdsall Chambers said. “The girls learn interpersonal skills and self-empowerment.”

Musician, teacher Chase Love records EP, gives music to love, share, reflect

D

uring COVID-19, many people had bucket lists: mastering another language, learning to juggle, reading the classics. Chase Love made the most of those months as well.

A teacher at American Academy of Innovation, he recorded his first album, “Statements,” with producer Gavin McMahan. During the summer months, he edited it and released it last fall without a fanfare during the pandemic.

“I wrote all the songs; it has a mix of Americana blues, rock and country influence,” Love said. “There is some acoustic and blues rock.”

He began playing piano 23 years ago at age five and took lessons until his sophomore or junior year in high school. Later, he taught himself ukulele and guitar.

Love’s grandfather was a jazz pianist and trumpet player.

“I’m classically training and can play jazz, but rock ‘n roll spoke to me,” he said.

It was in high school, Love started writing songs. With friends during his junior year, he won the winter talent show performing the clean version of The Axis of Awesome’s “The Four Chords Song.”

Then Love wrote the theme song for the

Montana Special Olympics and recorded “Footenotes” songwriting nonprofit album for high school students. Love received a scholarship from Jazz Montana.

As a freshman at Brigham Young University, Love recorded his original version of “Oh Tennessee” and “Runnin’ On” on his first EP with friends. During his Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints’ mission, he performed gospel and blues on piano at various occasions. Afterward, he studied PR and vocal performance.

Love managed trampoline parks in Tennessee and Virginia, lived in Las Vegas and ran his own professional detailing.

“Music is a passion for me, and I realized I’d rather be teaching and playing music than what I was doing,” he said and returned to Utah.

The songs on his album are considered a diary of Love’s life experiences, from when as a city boy he went camping in Montana with Boy Scouts to living in several states across the country.

“The songs are all very different, but they fit together and relate to one another,” he said. “‘Oh Tennessee’ is the liveliest of the songs, but my heart is in the South as most of my adult life, I lived there so a lot

of my music roots from the South. ‘Runnin’ On’ is a personal anthem, as I tried to survive in each city where I moved; ‘Nobody’ addresses the injustices and unfairness in the country and ‘Roll with Me’ reflects my high school days.”

The album features six songs: “Oh Tennessee,” featuring 13 instruments and a backing choir is an anthem to the state, which Love said “is basically a music fusion of several genres, including rock, pop, hip hop, country, gospel, blues and folk.”

“Runnin’ On,” he said, is “stylistically speaking, ‘Eleanor Rigby’ meets Elton John and Jimi Hendrix.”

“This is probably the truest reflection of what I wish my musical style to be. It is ‘blues rock pop’ in every essence of that phrase,” he said, adding that the song would not be complete without the guitar mastery of Tanner Thorne “who absolutely shreds it and nails the Hendrix vibe I was looking for.”

The song, “Nobody” Love wrote to address overcoming adversity, injustice, and unfairness that he witnessed after living in several states across the country.

about everything going on right now,” he said.

“Montana Symphony” “is perhaps the most personal song I’ve ever written. It describes my experience living in Montana as a teenager and all of the highs and lows that came with it,” Love said, adding that the string players “were absolutely amazing on this song, and the entire album.”

The song, “Roll with Me,” is an acoustic ukulele blues tune Love wrote in high school and with the help of friend Grant Fry, Love finished the lyrics for in college.

The final song, “Texas Lights,” Love began writing when he learned a friend in Texas had been in an accident.

“This song is my way of saying thank you to the many different people from Texas that have influenced me throughout my life,” he said. “Of all the songs on the album, this one probably demonstrates my style of piano the best.”

The list of albums which he listens to is long and artists as well, but among those are Elvis Presley, Ray Charles, Buddy Holly, Chuck Berry, The Beatles and The Rolling Stones, which illustrate a great and varied influence of musicians in his life, he said.

“I love the ‘50s; Elvis definitely made an impression,” he said. “I love the blues, bluegrass, R & B of Ray Charles and rock ‘n roll and put that into my life and it’s what impacted me and makes this ‘Americana’ EP,” Love said.

Music is a passion he shares not only with his own music, but with his students as he teaches and advises students in the class, “Rock Band.”

This year, the seven-member band, Bawzli, learned to master various cover songs as Love managed the band and ran their rehearsals.

During the charter school’s immersion week, he has taught students music of Eddie Van Halen and Led Zeppelin.

“I believe significant artists have meaning in the history of rock ‘n roll,” he said. “They’re true to themselves and don’t listen to what others think. They have more potential to change the world.”

Monte Vista students showcase talent to grant wishes to Make-a-Wish peers

onte Vista Elementary teacher Theresa Norton wants students to appreciate what they have and give a little to those who aren’t as fortunate.

For the third year, Monte Vista students stepped up to do just that as they raised funds for not only the three youth who they planned to grant wishes for, but another, through the Make-a-Wish Utah. The foundation will select the fourth child.

“Our goal was $15,000, so $5,000 apiece for the three kids, but we ended up with $21,660, so we can grant another child a wish,” Norton said. “Our students realize that there are kids out there who can’t or don’t have the opportunity to hang out with friends or go on vacation, so they want to make it happen.”

Norton said that the three initial children the students raised funds for all live in the area.

Ten-year-old Sylvia had a kidney transplant after being diagnosed with stage four kidney failure; she likes to play with her dolls and color and would like a shopping spree that includes art supplies, toys and an iPad. Nine-year-old Max, who is battling leukemia, wants a room makeover, creating a video-game room where he can play with his brother when he’s not having enough energy to ride his bike. Seven-year-old Micah, who has chronic kidney disease, loves the outdoors, so he wants to explore and have adventures with his family and go on vacation in St. George.

“To them, a shopping spree or a vacation is not usual; it’s something that normal kids have with their families and something these kids are looking forward to,” she said.

“It’s not being in the hospital. These kids are fighting disease and want a normal life. We want our students to raise money and give back as a selflessness attitude so these kids can have the same opportunities.”

To raise the funds, Monte Vista students held a virtual talent show. The first 20 students per grade who signed up with parental permission were recorded doing their school-appropriate talent. The range varied from sketching and gymnastics to playing guitar and trampoline tricks.

“We had some amazing student talent,” Principal Nan Ririe said. “Everything from ‘50s version of ‘Fly Me to the Moon’ Sinatra style, to karate, dance, baseball. It was so fun to see all the videos.”

Students’ families could share their own videos with family and friends and then donations were made to support the Make-a-Wish children. Parents, school faculty and staff, and local businesses provided contributions, including two large donations that amounted to approximate $14,000, she said.

There were incentives for students to bring in funds, such as top fundraising students on May 13 could pie a teacher or administrator.

Norton, who has overseen the effort to grant wishes at Monte Vista since Alicia Rasmussen left in 2019–2020, was ready for that pie.

“The first year, I got pied twice and wore a plastic trash bag, but I came home to shower,” she said. “It’s a weird feeling [before getting pied], anticipating it’s coming and what it will feel like. But I enjoy it and the kids do too, and it’s for granting wishes.” l

Welby sixth grader wins state Reflections, gears up for next year’s competition

he national PTA Reflections contest has more than 300,000 students in pre-K through grade 12 annually create original works of art in response to a student-selected theme. So, when Mercedes Trayner, a Welby Elementary sixth grader, received an email from the state PTA, she knew it was important.

Her clay sculpture of a girl that she worked on all last summer won the state award of excellence.

“She’s looking down into a mirror and pretty much, the girl feels that in order to matter, she has to wear big fancy dresses and look amazing. But when she looks down into the mirror, she finds that she matters, no matter what. She doesn’t need all the extra accessories to matter,” she said, adding that the reflection doesn’t show a girl with a fancy updo or outfit.

“The girl with the fancy dresses doesn’t have a face. She’s not being true to herself, but when she sees herself in the mirror, she sees herself (with a face as she is), and she’s not all fancy.”

In her write-up accompanying her entry, Mercedes also said, “Sometimes, it’s hard to feel like we are accepted for who we are. But there is no one who doesn’t matter.”

Her sculpture wasn’t Mercedes only state placing. Her piano piece, with her mother singing, received the state award of merit.

Mercedes has played piano the past six years.

“I love it; I wrote a song about like reasons that people matter,” she said, tying it into the Reflections’ theme, “I matter because … .”

Mercedes also had another entry in the film category win regionals to advance to state; however, that didn’t place in the state competition.

The sixth grader has a goal to enter each of the seven state categories in the Reflections contest; she already entered literature last year.

“Me and my friend always make lots of crafts and we like drawing, and so I thought it would be something fun to do,” Mercedes said, with her dad adding that his daughter also likes to paint and make videos on an iPad. She has thought about becoming a film director when she’s older. Mercedes said her films are “pretty random and weird”; her most recent production with a friend was about “if you don’t eat your fruit, your fruit will eat you.”

Other South Jordan award-winners include Monte Vista’s Brauer Warner, who received an award of excellence in visual arts, and Rush Simmons, who received an award of merit in visual arts; Jordan Ridge’s Brynlee Ericson, who received an award of merit in dance, and Brittney Ericson, who received an honorable mention in dance; and Elk Ridge’s Bridger Pedroza, who received an honorable mention in the literature special artist category.

However, Mercedes isn’t sitting idly by this summer. She already is thinking about which of the Reflections’ categories she will enter this coming year when she’s a student at Elk Ridge Middle School.

And she has advice to other students who plan to enter Reflections.

“Make sure [the entry] really does match the theme, and then make sure the paragraphs you write also matches it,” Mercedes said, adding that it could make the difference if the entry moves on to the next level. “And definitely, make it fun and have fun.” l

any educators this past year wanted to give their students a sense of normalcy in a pandemic like none other but still continue to encourage youth to read and learn.

While there was no Jordan School District title to claim, many South Jordan elementary schools chose to hold their own version of America’s Battle of the Books.

Eastlake Elementary held its own Battle of the Books, with teams of four or five students reading from the booklist that was provided the previous summer. In 30-minute battles, students answered comprehension questions, needing to reply with the title of the book and author’s name to get full points.

Third and fourth grade teams competed against other, while fifth graders competed against sixth graders. There were about 34 teams per grade.

“Then the top four from the grade level challenge each other to top two then to top winning team and won a trophy,” Principal Kristie Howe said, adding that it was a third grade and a sixth grade team that each won the school awards.

She said that there were posters displayed in the classrooms and library all year and during their library rotation, students were encouraged to read the books.

“We have students chat about a book each month over morning announcements. In theory, it’s optional, but teachers strongly encourage students to read and be part of the team,” she said, adding that the PTA provides T-shirts for the student teams. “This is just to encourage students to read and really focus on the fun of reading a variety of books, and on working as a team. Students love this challenge and look forward to it each year.”

Learning about other schools’ positive experiences with Battle of the Books inspired Principal Bev Griffith to bring the program to South Jordan Elementary this year.

“I like having kids having books in their hands,” she said. “The kids were reading books they wouldn’t have read otherwise. Some read them and really liked genres they wouldn’t read before.

With the help of the school’s PTA buying sets of the books on the list, students began reading the books and filling out graphic organizers. Classroom discussions focused on many of the books on the list.

“Students had some class time, but some worked afterschool with their team, putting their heads together and working together as a team,” she said about the teams of four students in third through sixth grades. “Some of them had a lot of fun and were creative. A fourth grade team got T-shirts made with their team name, ‘Team Over There,’ and many had fun coming up with their names. There was a team of sixth grade girls called the Fearsome Four, and the sixth grade winners named themselves after food: Bush’s Baked Beans.”

Other winners include the third grade “The Wolves” team; fourth grade “Five Amigos”; and fifth grade, “Bookworms.”

Parents were able to watch the semifinals and finals of the competition.

She said that some teams that enjoyed the competition so much returned off-track to be able to compete against other students who were on-track.

Griffith, who read part of the books on the list, said teachers saw more students reading for enjoyment.

“They’re not reading because their teacher says to read, but now they are read-

ing because they enjoy curling up with a good book,” she said.

Griffith would “definitely do it again,” adding that the PTA and parent volunteers already have offered to oversee it next year.

At Welby Elementary, in one classroom, third grade students competed against themselves.

“They’re not in teams; they’re doing it individually,” third grade teacher Carolyn Smith said. “They read the book and check it off with me and they can earn pins [that represent the book they read]. I have kids with pins down their backpack shoulder straps or some have a lanyard. They’re collecting the pins.”

While it’s not a competition and Smith didn’t keep track of the number of books each student read, she said she offered it “for the enjoyment of reading.”

Before the end of the school year, Smith gave each student a parting gift, “Because of Winn Dixie,” which was on the reading list and a book they can read in the summer to prepare themselves for the first story they’ll read in the fall.

“My theme is M&Ms, so I give them a pack of M&Ms and tell them to have their own M&M Fest through the summer and read this book,” she said. “They’ll get to read a good book and be ready for fourth grade.” l

Jenkins-Soffe Mortuary:

At 106 years, it’s the oldest family owned business in Murray, Utah George A. Jenkins, a Midvale barber, and his wife, had lost five children and been closely associated with Bank’s Mortuary in Midvale.

George and Mr. Banks decided to become partners in the mortuary.

On the eve of the signing the necessary papers, Mr. Banks passed away and the agreement never took place.

After George sold his barbershop, he decided to become a funeral director.

The Jenkins family moved to Murray and it was there on State Street that he opened Jenkins Mortuary in December 1915.

In February 1935, Jenkins Soffe became one.

Vaughn C. Soffe, and George’s daughter, Mary B. Jenkins, met at Utah State University then married. Vaughn eventually purchased the funeral home and then passed it on to his own sons, Jaren and Gregg. Now the Soffe grandsons, Kurt and Blake, and the great grandsons, make up five generations and 106 years of continued service to families in the community.

AAI’s robotics team learns skills beyond competition

A

merican Academy of Innovation sophomore Jed Johnson is a self-proclaimed tinkerer.

“I’ve always had an interest in electronics and programming,” he said. “This is my third year on the robotics team. It gives me an opportunity to learn and develop my creative side.”

As members of AAI’s FIRST Tech Challenge team, Johnson and other team members build and program a robot to compete a specific challenge. This year’s challenge was to accumulate the most points in the FIRST Tech Challenge’s Ultimate Goal.

At several area competitions, AAI’s robot and another robot that was randomly selected formed an alliance to face their opponents.

The two teams on each side had their robots ready in the 12-foot-by-12-foot playing surface; the four robots were ready to battle to see which alliance could get the most points. Ultimately, the teams with the most points advance to the final rounds.

The robots began with 30-second autonomous period where teams had preprogrammed or used sensors to have their robots move a wobbly goal to a certain place on the playing field or launch rings into goals stacked at different heights to earn points. They also could gain points for

each power shot that was knocked down from the launching zone.

Then, the teams’ two drivers picked up their controls for a two-minute period

where, again, they battled for points by getting rings in the goals. At the end, they could also put rings on the wobbly goals and move those goals over the edge of the field for points.

While the competition is stiff, Johnson’s teammate junior Mikayli Cannon said it’s “honestly, learning how to work as a team and coming together for the best results. Everyone

tends to think differently.”

Johnson said that they do that by “sitting together coming up with ideas and then choosing the best idea to approach the challenge and robot in a unique way. By doing that, we work together and cooperate as team members, and we learn more from one another. It’s a big game changer.”

Danielle Cannon, advises the 12-member team, of which only four will return this school year to compete on the team.

“They collaborate well together and listen to one another,” she said. “We weren’t able to have much in terms of mentors come because of the [COVID-19] pandemic, so they listened to their team leads. Besides programming, they learn business and English skills and presentation skills—and they learn about trial and error and perseverance. To them, this is like athletics—a place where they can excel and belong, challenge themselves and draw from.”

This year, AAI hosted a tournament for the first time and learned the “behind the scenes.”

The team members chose not to compete at their own tournament to ensure there wasn’t a conflict of interest, but instead traveled to West High, Freedom Preparatory Academy in Provo and Hurricane, Utah, tournaments.

While the team competed in those tournaments this year, they didn’t qualify for state after being state runner-up last year—by a piece of tape.

“We had all kinds of issues,” Johnson said. “We had to fit our robot in an 18-inch-by-

18-inch-by-18-inch space, and we were able to do that with the arm mechanism down, but then it wouldn’t stay up. So, we used Scotch tape, and it worked. We had all these things that our robot could do, but we needed a quick fix and that was tape.”

Mikalyi Cannon, who wants to be a neurosurgeon, said that being involved in robotics has given a chance to be a leader and have her voice heard.

“I’ve learned leadership skills and how to work together, like who can help someone do what they like and are good at while teaching others how to do it,” she said.

The student body 11th grade representative and yearbook staff member, Mikayli Cannon, first became involved in robotics through a FIRST LEGO League team formed by Girl Scout Council of Utah.

“I enjoyed the two years I was on that team and then came here,” ,” she said.

“The first year, there were three of us, and I was able to use my experience and voice to share what I had learned.”

Cannon agrees.

“She has five years under her belt with FIRST,” Cannon said. “She has gone from a quiet little shy thing to a room full of boys where she has made herself heard.

She holds her own. She knows what she is talking about and brings out other people, so they learn from one another and come up with some amazing ideas.” l

T

he Bingham High softball team finished the year 25-4, with all four losses coming to Riverton, twice in region and twice in the state championship series. Three of those losses came by one run.

Bingham softball coach Mikki Jackson said she credits the caliber of players she has for why her team could play Riverton well. She said Riverton is a team that can punish opponents for mistakes and that was the case in the state title.

Furthermore, Jackson said what made the difference in the finals were a few mistakes on Bingham’s part but also solid student-athletes from Riverton.

“I can remember our coach that was calling the pitches saying ‘man, she [Bingham’s pitcher] is giving good pitches and they [Riverton] are not biting or they’re crushing these good pitches.’ They’re just really good hitters.”

Still, Jackson said she couldn’t be more proud of her players because of how well they played leading up to the finals and for how they competed against Riverton.

On the season the Miners racked up almost 10 runs per game while holding opponents to just three runs per game.

While the team graduated superstars like Averi Hanny, off to Utah Valley University to continue her softball career, and Emily Dority, headed to Logan to play for Utah State, Bingham will return a solid core next year.

Sophomores Braxtyn Hunter and Shelbee Jones combined for 20 home runs and 73 RBIs this past season will return as key contributors. Junior Eliza Chapple also returns.

Utah Food Bank to distribute 200,000 meals this summer

W

hat fits in a 10-inch by 8-inch by 7-inch box?

If you said 14 meals for a Utah child, you would be right.

As part of their Summer Food Service program, the Utah Food Bank provides meal boxes to individuals 18 and younger each week throughout Utah. The boxes are free and are design for one person for seven days—seven breakfasts and seven dinners. If a family has four children, they get four boxes.

Each box includes a sample menu. For example, breakfast one is a cereal bowl and regular applesauce. For dinner two, the menu is cheddar cheese cup, sunflower kernels, MJM Pizza Crackers, flavored applesauce and vegetable juice. Other items on the menu are Pop-Tarts, barbecue chicken salad, breakfast bar, Jack Link’s Original Chicken Tender Bites, and beef sticks. The kids are given 14 small cartons of milk with their box.

These boxes are distributed in eight Utah counties, including Salt Lake County.

are enrolled programs that have specific requirements. There are 16 sites across the valley, including Boys & Girls Clubs, community centers and libraries. Libraries are included because the Utah Food Bank found that many children spend their days at the library but never had food.

Utah Food Bank “Most people, when they come home, they wonder what they are having for dinner. I drive home wondering if every child in Utah has a dinner,” Ginette Bott, president and CEO of Utah Food Bank, said.

The Utah Food Bank partners with 205 agencies across the state. In 2020, they distributed 62.5 million pounds of food at no cost to the receivers or the agencies. Utah Food Bank is the largest food distributor in the state.

Since 1904, the Utah Food Bank has tried to learn more efficient ways to obtain products and meet the needs of the people of Utah. With the increase in the refugee population, the Utah Food Bank has learned how to meet their dietary needs.

Utah Food Bank does not consider itself a transportation company nor a human need company.

“We just quietly go about feeding kids,” Bott said.

Bott mentioned that sometimes they are criticized for giving out ramen noodles. Her response is she would rather have a child’s belly full of noodles than having them cry because they are hungry.

Bott pointed out that the Utah Food Bank always needs food, time and money.

She also said if a person ever needs help, call 211 or go to the Utah Food Bank website.

Grocery Rescue program The Grocery Rescuer program is a partnership with 270 grocery retailers.

Retailers provide food that is nearing the expiration date but is still healthy and wholesome to eat.

Refrigerated trucks provided by the Utah Food Bank and partner agencies operate six days a week throughout the state, picking up the food donations. The food goes directly to food pantries to be distributed within 24 hours.

The donations primarily are daily consumables, including fresh produce, dairy and meat. Without this program, such items would end up in the landfill.

In 2020, 16 million pounds of food was distributed to help end hunger.

Walt May, a program director, offered a way anyone can help with this program.

May suggested that they will give you the freshest meat or cheese when you go to the deli at the grocery store. This allows the retailer to freeze the older meat and cheese and donate it to the program.

“Buying sliced deli meat or cheese helps feed people of Utah,” May said. l

tah Soccer Alliance is concerned with more than how many championships its soccer teams win.

The Riverton-based soccer club features over 90 teams with more than 1,200 players ranging from ages 6–19. The club, which has seen multiple players go through Bingham High through the years, serves those who live in the south end of Salt Lake County as well as the Salt Lake City metro area.

With all these teams, Director of Coaching Dennis Burrows said the key focus for the club is development.

“Basically, we look to take players from when they’re young and give them a good soccer experience and teach them the ropes,

teach them how to play the game, give them a lesson in soccer skills but also in life skills, push them to be the best people they can be and the best soccer players they can be,” he said.

Club soccer is a popular place for many youth athletes. US Youth Soccer, the largest youth soccer organization in the country, claims it registers about 3 million kids each year, while the American Youth Soccer Organization’s website states it has more than 400,000 players on its affiliated clubs.

At Utah Soccer Alliance, an affiliate of US Youth Soccer, there are programs for those of all skill and commitment levels.

el of competition and require a high level of commitment. On the other end, there are other levels for those who need to improve their skill levels and who may be playing multiple sports.

Other programs include academy teams for younger athletes as they grow in their abilities and a pre-academy for the youngest athletes as they develop a love for the game.

Furthermore, the club also is home to the Utah Red Devils, an women’s amateur team that competes in the Women’s Premier Soccer League.

All these teams and development opportunities, Burrows said, are aimed at helping athletes achieve their goals by putting them in the right position.

“What we like to look at it as is we’ll put you in a situation where you have the skills or you’re given the opportunity to learn the skills and the life lessons to be a productive member of a college team, of a higher level regional or national squad or maybe a professional squad,” he said. “We look to be well-rounded with our players, not just raffle them into a position at a young age.”

Hailey Povilus joined Utah Soccer Alliance about five years ago. Over those five years, she had developed both technically and in her confidence, culminating in her joining the women’s soccer team at the University of Utah.

Her father, Eric Povilus, largely credits Utah Soccer Alliance for helping her grow and helping her obtain her dream of playing collegiate soccer.

But it wasn’t only as a soccer player.

Eric said he loved how supported his daughter felt in pursuit of her academics and college preparations.

“She never felt like she would be penalized if she missed a game or anything for a school activity or school task,” he said.

“There’s a lot of clubs in the Salt Lake area where that’s not the case.”

While the club tries its best to be accommodating, there still is a tricky tightrope to walk between club and high school soccer.

The club soccer season features a fall and a spring portion. For high school, girls soccer is in the fall, while boys soccer is in the spring.

Burrows said a big concern is overworking between the two factions. This concern is larger with girls, he said, because they have a more intense work up in the summer while the boys can’t do as much to lead up to their high school season with the winter months.

Burrows said there is some progress being made to help both sides cohabit the soccer environment but there’s still some work to do. One such example, Burrows said, is the Utah High School Activities Association allowing student-athletes to play in showcases during the high school season.

Differences between the two also extend into recruiting. At Utah Soccer Alliance, there are numerous tools to help athletes find the best fit for the next level.

the best fit school, Burrows said the club places a lot of emphasis on putting players in front of scouts through tournaments and showcases.

Burrows said while he and the club take pride in helping athletes obtain their goals, he’s careful not to take too much credit in the process.

“It’s not a recognition thing for us as a club, more as that’s our job to get out and show them to the coaches and give them an opportunity to be seen,” he said.

When Hailey Povilus was looking to play in college, she started to tell the Utah Soccer Alliance coaches which schools she was targeting. Eric Povilus said when this communication started, the club coaches would offer to reach out for her or help in other ways.

This communication, Eric said, would help college coaches know all they need to and they could better assess Hailey’s skills.

Furthermore, Eric said club coaches would spend a lot of time pitching athletes to desired colleges and help coaches better understand the athletes both during and after matches.

“There’s a lot of time spent calling all these coaches before these tournaments and showcases,” he said. “You go to a showcase over a three-day weekend, coaches from a Pac-12 school or an SEC school can only go to so many games so they place their bets on who they want to see, they just don’t randomly show up.”

Burrows said he knows college coaches try to be economical in their approach to finding athletes. He said they’re more likely to show up at a showcase where they can see numerous players rather than a high school where they can see one or two.

“How much recruitment happens solely through high school? I don’t think it really exists on the soccer side,” he said. “I know in football and basketball, it’s different, but on the soccer side, it’s just that way.”

While Utah Soccer Alliance can offer a lot of benefits, there are some concerns such as costs. Costs can hover between $2,000 to $3,000 after participation and uniform fees.

That doesn’t include all other traveling expenses required for out-of-state competitions.

Burrows said there are financial aid options and other help, but he does acknowledge it can be a lot for some families.

What he also said is the club is worth the investment because of the offerings and the high-caliber coaches help athletes along their development.

“The bang for the buck is actually really good for club soccer,” he said. “If they were to pay a babysitter for the time they have their kids away from them, it would cost them triple what we charge. You look at it, and I think we’re giving them a good service, teaching them a nice game, a nice life lesson atmosphere, which I think is important and helps parents.” l

Psych 101: Narcissistic abuse centers on control and manipulation

Narcissism next!” requested a reader after reviewing the previous article covering gaslighting. OK—let’s do it!

(This is where I feel obliged to share a warning. The following article discusses topics of abuse and may be triggering to some.)

In the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM), narcissism is categorized as a Personality Disorder.

Narcissistic personality disorder has been primarily recognized through behavioral patterns steeped in a need for admiration and a lack of empathy. Individuals with narcissistic personality disorder tend to have a grandiose sense of self-importance, believing they are special and unique. In turn, they frequently have a lack of empathy and tend to be envious of others or believe others are envious of them. They may also be preoccupied with fantasies of unlimited success, power, brilliance, beauty and ideal love.

Conversations around recognizing narcissistic traits and managing relationships with narcissistic individuals have gained more popular attention in the last few years. Now, there are two types of narcissism widely recognized. Overt or grandiose narcissism is primarily described

above. Individuals may be arrogant and preoccupied with success, wealth, attractiveness and power. However, there’s a less explicit type of narcissism. Covert or vulnerable narcissism may be identified through self-absorbed and/or passive-aggressive behaviors. Individuals with covert narcissistic traits may be highly sensitive and have a history of impersonal and difficult relationships.

Narcissistic abuse has been recognized as a type of interpersonal abuse (and/ or domestic abuse) and is beginning to be formally recognized in various governmental and legal documents and policies.

On the surface, it may be difficult to differentiate narcissistic abuse from typified interpersonal abuse. This tends to make narcissistic abuse more complicated and harder to prove. Some of the key reported differences include increase frequency and explicit intentionality. “The idea is that they totally know what they are doing,” reported an anonymous survivor.

Individuals with narcissistic personality disorder tend to exhibit numerous abusive behaviors. They may make attempts at isolation in order to maintain control and attention in the relationship, driving away friends and family relations of the oth-

er person. They tend to control finances, monitoring money closely, and only allowing limited access to certain funds.

In abusive relationships, including those involving individuals with narcissistic personality disorder, there’s frequently a cycle of abuse involved. Psychologists have deemed the phases of abuse as idealization, devaluation and discarding. In idealization, otherwise known as “lovebombing,” the individual may shower the other with praise and gifts. This builds a sense of safety and trust. In devaluation, the individual may use what was disclosed during the idealization phase as ammo to instill emotional responses and a sense of worth-

lessness. Then, the individual discards the other before starting the cycle over again.

Additionally, abusive relationships commonly involve manipulation tactics such as being overly critical and controlling, manufacturing situations to elicit emotional distress, engaging in hot and cold behavior, stonewalling, triangulating, blaming, shaming, deflecting and projecting.

Narcissistic abuse can occur in any relationship. While some of the focus above is on abuse in romantic relationships, it’s important to remember narcissistic abuse can be prevalent in friendships, familial relationships and working relationships.

Those with narcissistic personality disorder tend to be interpersonally exploitative as they take advantage of others to achieve their own ends. For example, friendships may only be maintained on a superficial level.

If you, or someone you know is experiencing abuse, some steps of recovery to enact right now may include: validating the survivors experience, identifying abusive traits, breaking habits of empathizing with the abuser, validating one’s own reality, creating or relying on a solid support network, grieving the good parts of the relationship, resolving trauma, improving self-love, and learning to recognize red

flags and set boundaries.

In Utah, resources for domestic violence and interpersonal abuse include: the Utah Domestic Violence Coalition, Utah Community Action, Utah Association of Family Support Centers, YWCA Utah’s Domestic Violence Shelter Programs and the Statewide Domestic Violence Info-line LINKline.

What is the Mosquito Abatement District?

ave you noticed a line on your property tax bill that says Mosquito Abatement? What is that? Why do they get your tax money?

There are three mosquito abatement districts in Salt Lake County. Each of them serves their area, performing similar functions: Salt Lake City Mosquito Abatement, Magna Mosquito Abatement, South Salt Lake Valley Mosquito Abatement.

“Mosquitos are definitely a nuisance,” Brian Hougaard, manager for South Salt Lake Valley Mosquito Abatement District, said. “They have the potential to carry diseases.”

A mosquito abatement focuses heavily on mosquitos that carry West Nile Virus, a disease that can cause severe inflammation to the brain and spinal cord.

“We have 52 different trap sites, using three different types of traps. We use these traps not only to monitor the number of mosquitos in the area...we also use those to catch [and] test for West Nile virus,” Hougaard said.

Each district employs full-time, year-round experts, but then hires seasonal workers for the summer. The staff spends their time checking traps, testing mosquitoes for potential viruses and responding to resident calls.

Residents can call for an inspection. They will inspect horse troughs, residential ponds, tree holes and catch basins.

If there are mosquito larvae, the district can put in mosquito fish, an aggressive eater of mosquitos, or briquettes that prevent larvae from hatching into adults. l

It’s been said that when we make plans, God laughs. Do you think that’s a silly giggle or a maniacal James Bond villain laugh?

The last few weeks brought a string of first-world irritations that felt like a game of Whac-a-Mole. I hit one problem and another one popped up. I pound that problem but end up hitting myself in the face with a rubber mallet. I can hear God LOLing from here.

Despite our daily devotion to it, our TV stopped working. We shook the remote and pushed buttons as hard as we could, but there was still no picture. Just a dark, mocking abyss.

We decided to run away from our responsibilities by driving to Idaho and checking-in at an Airbnb. (The room was nice, but the bed was shaped like a taco. I slept on the couch so I didn’t roll over in the night and suffocate my spouse.)

Every 50 years, my husband likes to visit Yellowstone, so we left our Airbnb and drove to the national park to snap pictures of the bison, tiptoe around the geysers and marvel at the wondrous number of people who had the same idea. #HelloCOVID After getting lost in Yellowstone and stopping for Mexican food so we didn’t starve to death, we crossed the Teton Pass just as the sun was setting. Deer lined the road, waiting for the right moment to lunge in front of our car. We’d see their eyes glow-

ing in the dark, then hit the brakes before driving on. It took us 245 years to get back to our Airbnb.

The drive back to Salt Lake the next day was pleasant, except when I had to give my husband the silent treatment because he wouldn’t take me to the Potato Museum (#PotatoIceCream). After we crossed back into Utah, the truck in front of us kicked up a rock that hit the car’s windshield, leaving an extensive and expensive crack across the glass.

Used to be, when you broke a windshield, you’d call the junkyard and they’d take a windshield out of a car in their backyard to replace the broken one. Today’s windshield has monitors, antenna and tracking devices, so it’s worth half-a-million dollars, according to the windshield repair shop.

Why hasn’t Elon Musk created self-healing windshield glass?

We made it back home, picked up the dog and gave everyone their Yellowstone golf balls and Idaho potholders. I looked forward to a nice hot shower but (joke’s on us) the hot water heater stopped working and was chuckling with God and the TV. They all had a good laugh together.

We forked out more cash so we could have hot water, collapsed into our non-taco bed and slept.

A few days later, my husband said, “We have a gas leak in the basement.” It took me a minute to understand what he was saying because he was so calm. My husband is notoriously terrible under stress.

“Why are we still in the house?” I asked.

“Where else would we be?” He responded.

“Not in a house that could explode if we make toast.”

We hustled everyone to the neighbor’s lawn until the gas company gave us the okay.

The water heater had been installed incorrectly but our house wasn’t going to blow up. Today, at least.

I rarely look at the dark side of life and by the end of the week I was chortling right along with God, the TV and the water heater. Sometimes, LOLing is the only thing you can do.

elby Elementary teacher Leslie Foltz was answering students’ questions in the front of the room as they were writing reminders in their planner. Her head was down, listening to one of the second graders so she didn’t take note of a few people initially walk into her classroom before members of the Jordan Education Foundation, Jordan School District Superintendent Anthony Godfrey, her family, Principal Aaron Ichimura and others came in to congratulate her on being one of the district’s outstanding teachers of the year.

“I was overwhelmed,” she said. “People kept walking in. I was still trying to process what was going as JEF came in with the principal and superintendent, then I saw my family and figured it out. I never dreamed I’d get this honor.”

Along with presenting her balloons and flowers, in came lunch for her from Café Rio and “I already had a Dr. Pepper on my desk, so I was set,” she said.

Foltz, however, was just one of Jordan School District’s outstanding teachers of the year—in a year that each school’s selection received a crystal award, a yard sign and $500, said Anne Gould of the Jordan Education Foundation.

“There were so many heartfelt applications, it was just too hard to select just a few,” she said. “So many teachers stepped up to bat that we needed to honor one from each school.”

Godfrey also acknowledged the teachers’ extraordinary efforts.
