P

aradigm High School junior Reagan Cox wanted to choose what she was learning.

“I was looking for a program that allowed me more freedom in my education,” she said. “I found that in the Jefferson Scholar program.”

Paradigm’s Jefferson Scholar program allows students, or scholars as they are called at the school, to complete state curriculum high school credits as they study topics they choose. The program isn’t a lecture format from teachers, or mentors, rather, the scholars select a topic they want to learn about, research it and present it in one of several ways to their peers and mentor, said mentor Lisa Mauer who originated the program.

That was what Cox wanted.

“We were learning about Italy, and I chose to learn more about gelato since I have an interest in foods. I was so excited to learn about what I wanted and because I have that interest in it, I’ll be able to remember what I learned,” she said. “I’ve also learned about Egypt’s female pharaoh, which came from learning about gelato. I learned ice cream came from Egypt and it started because of their pharaoh, who was female. I’ve shared that excitement of learning about it with friends. It’s never happened before that my education is joyful. I’m learning and excited about it.”

outh Jordan has joined the EPA in designating January as Radon Action Month.

Most Utahans are aware of the dangers of radon, but taking steps to mitigate it and make your home safe again is another thing. Which is why this is Radon Action Month rather than merely Radon Awareness Month.

Radon is a radioactive gas, found naturally in soil all over the United States. But just because it’s natural doesn’t mean that it is safe or good for you. It is the second most prominent cause of lung cancer—the deadliest cancer of all—in the US after smoking. According to the EPA, it is responsible for around 20,000 deaths every year. It readily seeps into houses, particularly basements. It is invisible and has no odor. You will never know whether your house has radon in it unless you test it, and levels can rise over time, particularly when the soil is disturbed by home renovations—which is why testing for it somewhat regularly is important.

“The Utah Department of Environmental Quality is a good resource for basic radon information and why it’s a big deal.

They also sell test kits. They have a very comprehensive program,” said South Jordan Communications Manager Rachael van Cleave.

Four picocuries of radon per liter of air—or 4pCi/l, as the measurement is abbreviated—is the level at which the EPA recommends taking action. The World Health Organization is even stricter, and recommends taking action for anything higher than 2.7 pCi/l. No amount of radon is completely safe, the EPA explains; four pCi/l is just the minimum amount that most tests can reliably detect.

The Utah Department of Environmental Quality periodically releases information on radon levels by zip code. South Jordan contains 3 zip codes; in 2019, 45% percent of homes in the zip code 84095 had radon levels above 4 pCi/l, as did 35.4% of homes in the zip code 84009. If you live in South Jordan, there’s a very significant chance that your home has a dangerous level of radon, which makes the city’s proclamation of Radon Action Month particularly poignant.

If you have dangerous radon levels in your house, how can you lower them?

Most radon mitigation methods involve sealing up any cracks in the foundation that radon can get through, followed by venting the existing radon out through various means—simply plugging up cracks is not enough to restore a home to safe levels.

One common method is active subslab suction, also called active subslab depressurization. This involves installing a system that collects the radon from beneath the building before it can enter, and vents it to the air above the home, where

it is quickly diluted to a safe level. These systems generally consist of a plastic pipe connected to both the soil and a quiet, continuously-operating fan, which sucks the radon out.

“Mitigation isn’t as expensive as you may think,” said radon-induced lung cancer survivor Jan Poulsen said on the Department of Environmental Quality’s website. “It can typically can be done for $1,500 or less. The cost of my lung cancer treatment to date is running upwards of $1.25 million, so mitigation is pretty cost-effective if you think about it.”

According to the EPA, even homes with very high radon levels can be reduced

to 4pCi/l 95% of the time, and efforts to reduce radon levels below 2pCi/l are effective 70% of the time. Even if you can’t get it below 2%, reducing your radon level still reduces your risk of cancer by a lot.

The Department of Environmental Quality can direct you to reputable contractors for installing radon mitigation systems, and also sells radon tests for $10.95 each, which includes the laboratory costs of analyzing your sample. Radon tests are also sold at hardware stores such as Lowes, but don’t buy them there. Hardware store tests often lure you in with a low up-front price, but then won’t actually give you results until you pay a $60 lab fee. l

The Jefferson Scholar program began four years ago after a year in development.

Since then, it’s been revamped and finetuned, Mauer said.

“I was sitting at my computer, creating a PowerPoint,” she said about the evening the idea came to her to have the program. “I sat there thinking, ‘wow, this kid is going to love this topic and this other kid, he’s going to fall asleep because he doesn’t care about this sort of stuff.’ I was going through all the scholars in one class and I’m like ‘geez, they just can’t do their own research on this topic because they would all be different.’ All of a sudden, it was ‘well, why don’t we?’ So this Jefferson Scholar program basically turns the tables. I have given the students boundaries for what they need to be doing, and then let them go. I turn into one taking notes and asking questions because the things that they come up with are not what I would have come up with.”

She said many of the skills they’re practicing apply to their future college learning.

“They learn to ask questions to research the answers to their own questions.

They learn different kinds of research.

They learn to take notes. They learn to work together and collaborate. They learn to work by themselves. They learn to ask,” she said. “They have been told since kindergarten what to study. It’s the teacher who always gives them information, telling them what they’re going to be learning and telling them how to learn it, what’s

required on the test. This class doesn’t do that. It actually gives them the opportunity to discern what they want to study in certain areas.”

Junior Garrett Schugk said he not only has learned how to study, but also how to manage his time and not procrastinate.

“I love picking about topics I’m super passionate about,” he said. “I’ve talked to my mentors one-on-one, learning how to study, how to research and how to write a thesis. I learned how to take notes a different way with a different purpose. My writing has a purpose to it. It’s like higher education and it’s advancing my education.”

Mauer said that when studying U.S. history, she has had students select George Washington or Alexander Hamilton, but another student chose to learn about military tactics of different time periods.

“I would have never presented a lesson on it, because it wasn’t my area of interest,” Mauer said. “I may have said, ‘OK, let’s study the minutemen.’ That’s about as close to military as I would have gotten. The student learned about the tactics and where they came from,” she said, adding that students have the opportunity to share what they learned by taking the role as teacher. “I’m here to guide them, to help them find sources and help them figure out tactics of how to study and how to learn.”

That is one of the ways Mauer assesses students.

“They are the teacher; they are the authority on what they are teaching; I ask questions,” she said, adding that often their hour-long presentation includes a PowerPoint and hand-outs. “I believe with my whole soul, when you have to teach other people, all of a sudden it becomes more serious and more worthy of your work.”

Other assessments are students may write an in-class, timed essay using their

notes; or have a personal interview with a mentor, in which they answer questions and show that they are learning. In addition, scholars write and present papers, and complete portfolios. They also will converse with Mauer about their learning and together, reflect upon it to give them a score on their research and assessment.

The class is open to all high school students and each semester, they will pursue an area of interest within the boundaries of the curriculum. Each year, the numbers of hours to research and study vary as they develop more skills.

This year, she has 26 Jefferson scholars. Through the years, she said that there have been 60 students in the program, which is an application process as is a way of ensuring students understand and are prepared for the concept of choosing their own learning.

Mauer is a firm believer in empowering students and having them make connections in their education.

“It is about their own education. It’s about owning their education,” she said, describing once students embrace this desire and are excited about learning, it reaches a point where she calls it “beautiful learning.”

Kelln Pratt said it’s one of her favorite classes.

“I was learning about ADHD in France and the chemistry of ADHD, and I began to compare America’s and Frances’s differing opinions of it; America sees it more biological and treats it with meds while France is more holistic and examines every part of it,” she said. “As I studied, I became fascinated about brain chemistry and that lead me to research more about chemistry and math. As a result, I learned more about myself and understand more since I was recently diagnosed with it.”

High school student-athletes undergo COVID-19 testing, change approaches to competitions

I

n swimming, the faster swimmers compete in the middle lanes. In basketball, traditionally, team captains shake hands with the opposing team and refs before the game and afterwards, players on both teams give each other a high-five. Wrestlers take the mats in multi-day competitions, but not anymore this season.

Those, and many other norms, aren’t the case in high school sports this winter. As high school student-athletes and coaches follow the Utah High School Activities Association’s COVID-19 health and safety guidelines, winter sports have a new look—and likely spring may follow some of the same protocols, say local high school athletic directors.

Throughout the state, the biggest change from fall sports to winter has been with restricting fans at indoor competitions and administering rapid COVID-19 every 14 days for student-athletes.

It’s part of the UHSAA “Return to Play” guidelines after high school sports mostly took a two-week break in early November following former Gov. Gary Herbert’s mandate, said Sally Williams, Hillcrest High athletic director in Canyons School District.

The “Return to Play” guidelines were issued in early December after the Utah School Superintendents Association and UHSAA worked with the Utah State Department of Health to provide protocols after the state health order suspended the start of the winter season.

Those guidelines were updated, with new policies of “test to stay” and “test to play” that took effect Jan. 4, when schools resumed from winter break. These have included if individuals are exposed to COVID-19, they can end quarantine 10 days after the last time they were in contact with the person who tested positive if they don’t have symptoms or they can return after a negative COVID-19 test result.

“We had to reschedule a bunch of games and give our teams time to prepare for the season; it was a bunch of shuffling for preseason and hard for both our boys and girls basketball teams as we have new head coaches in both programs and they had to put everything together, after delaying tryouts and early season preparations,” Williams said about the delayed winter season for her Midvale school. “But it still was probably good to get COVID numbers (of positive cases) down even though at that time, our school wasn’t high.”

Even so, both Hillcrest programs have had coaches and/or players test positive or be exposed to COVID-19, playing preseason basketball games with a skeleton team and both teams, canceling at least one game.

Already numbers at tryouts were down, about half as many for the boys and barely enough student-athletes to fill three team rosters for the girls, Williams said, because of the

impact of COVID-19 and that some online learners aren’t involved in sports this year.

“We’re at about 85% in-person enrollment this year,” Williams said. “The good news is that with the vaccine coming, we hope our spring season will happen since last year, their seasons were canceled because of COVID.” Admission to the basketball games and wrestling matches are restricted to assigned seats for contact tracing purposes and with two tickets issued per athlete, with Hillcrest stating no children in attendance. Masks are required for patrons.

Even athletes sit socially distanced from each other, totes by their chairs with their own water bottles and face masks. Student-athletes are allowed to take them off only during competition, Williams said.

Swim meets’ admission is restricted by the facility; many schools practice and compete at county pools, which limit capacity at 50 people including both boys and girls swim teams, coaches and officials often exceed that number. So, 11 of the 13 Hillcrest meets were scheduled at non-county facilities.

“We looked at swimming boys or girls or varsity and JV separately, but that gets to be kind of a nightmare. They all swim together, so what happens with those other kids and how many days are they unable to practice if we do it that way,” Hillcrest head coach Ryan Thierbach said, adding that meets are livestreamed free for the Hillcrest community.

Hillcrest swimmers also split the pool, so girls and boys teams have less interaction with one another to reduce possible spreading of COVID-19.

At Jordan High, in Sandy, athletic director Jason Long said the school’s swimmers aren’t as much impacted as other schools since they practice at private pools and when public pools are shut down, those schools that practice at them have no options and aren’t getting time in the water.

They also are finding a way for parents to watch their swimmers.

“We have invited some of our parents of seniors to be timers and judges so they can be there,” he said.

The competitions in the gym are different without student sections or pep bands.

“We aren’t pulling out all the bleachers in the gym as only two parents are allowed in to watch competitions,” Long said, adding that most sports are being livestreamed for families to watch with a subscription.

At Jordan, staff members are continuing to take student-athletes’ temperatures and go through health symptom checks just as they did in the fall in addition to administering COVID-19 tests, usually 45 minutes before the school day begins.

dent-athletes, coaches and managers, but also theatre and debate students since those activities fall under UHSAA. “We’re not relaxing on anything,” he said, admitting that the days get long, with early morning testing to games at night. “We’re all on the same page following UHSAA guidelines. It’s a lot of extra work from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. every single day, but we’re hopeful our students can compete and showcase their talents—and that’s worth the work.”

The push continues to wear masks for student-athletes, coaches, managers, trainers and athletic directors at practices, in huddles, team meetings, on the sideline and all the time, unless competing, he said.

“We have assigned seats socially distanced on the bus, in the locker room, on the bench. We’ll be able to trace each athlete and with the guidelines, keep the spread low. We shouldn’t have to shut down this way,” Long said, adding that even basketball drills are kept in small groups and drill is spaced distantly for contact tracing purposes. “If drill does any kind of lifts, they’re to practice in small groups and sanitize their hands.”

While the schools maintain the safety of its student-athletes and programs, referees fall under the UHSAA.

“Many of our refs wear masks until the game starts, then they take it off so they can use their whistles. They put the mask back on when talking to the coach or scorekeeper,” Long said.

In Jordan School District, Bingham Athletic Director Andee Bouwhuis said that instead of totes for the sideline seats, they have placed command strip hooks for masks and athletes keep their individual water bottles next to the chairs.

“We wipe down the bench with cleansing towels—the seats are spread out and assigned,” she said. “In the pool, we follow the county guidelines and limit five swimmers per lane, so our team is small this year.”

After the governor’s shutdown, Bouwhuis said she was surprised to see more athletes at tryouts.

“Kids are wanting to be involved and at school, not isolated at home,” she said. “Everyone is being flexible even as we’ve had to cancel or reschedule competitions. The coaches are just hopeful we’ll have a season and the athletes are putting it into perspective that just one or two games or meets aren’t that critical.

I’m hoping that when spring comes, we can have a full season. That would be amazing.” l

Reflecting on 2020: Things weren’t all bad in South Jordan

rdinarily, South Jordan Mayor Dawn Ramsey gives the annual State of the City address in person, but these are exceptional times, so she made an exception and delivered this year’s address in the form of a letter instead.

“Despite the challenges 2020 presented, our City Council, staff, and residents have risen to the occasion and made the most of the last year. We have many successes to celebrate and much to look forward to in 2021,” Mayor Ramsey wrote.

Recreation staff devised creative ways to keep residents engaged even at a distance, through their wildly successful Virtual Race Series, virtual scavenger hunts, Story Walks, and their virtual Light the Night events. Since the City Council has not met in person for months now, city staff have also put extra effort into releasing regular informative videos, newsletters and staying active on social media.

It was a big year for South Jordan’s fire department. When California and much of the west coast was on fire last summer, South Jordan firefighters were deployed as part of Utah Task Force One to help try to keep things under control. They also helped neighboring cities clear out fallen trees in the aftermath of September’s historic windstorm.

2021 will see the completion of the under-construction Fire Station 64—a combination fire station, police substation, and city hall annex with 30,000 square feet of floor space, located at 5443 West Lake Ave. Having a station on the west side of town will greatly improve emergency response times for residents in that area.

“We have already begun to hire and train staff for the new facility as well as acquire new equipment. Public safety will remain a top priority in 2021 as we continue to work on staffing and equipping the new station. We appreciate all our first responders do to help keep us safe,” wrote Mayor Ramsey.

project scheduled to be completed in 2021. A much-anticipated expansion to the South Jordan Cemetery is almost complete, and a new elementary school will be ready in the fall.

Construction is also underway on an all-new, eco-friendly library: the Daybreak Branch Library. The new library will feature a lovely rooftop garden, and is planned to be a net-zero energy building, meaning that the total amount of energy used by the building will be roughly equal to the amount of renewable energy created on-site. It’s scheduled to open next winter, at which point it will be open for 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year to all county residents.

South Jordan residents and cross-city commuters alike will also notice one other,

slightly more aggravating construction project this year: the creation of a flyover road at Bangerter Highway and 10400 South, which will result in a full closure of that intersection from May to November.

“This temporary closure will ensure that our residents remain safe during construction, and also allows the project to be finished in a shorter timeframe. We appreciate your patience and look forward to the completion of this monumental project that will significantly improve traffic flow,” wrote Mayor Ramsey.

Another 2020 achievement for South Jordan was winning the Bill Daniels Ethical Leadership Award for government. “Ethical Leadership is paramount! It is a great honor to be recognized for our ethical leadership and to

be chosen from among all government organizations in the state for this prestigious award,” Ramsey wrote.

South Jordan’s parks continue to grow.

Last year, the city added 12 pickleball courts to City Park and Highland Park, and broke ground on the 160-acre Bingham Creek Regional Park, which will be the largest park in the county. The existing Heritage Park will also receive an exciting addition later this summer.

Rather than class party, Hawthorn students turn to service

F

or many elementary students, this past December’s holiday class party wasn’t what they may have envisioned — if they were able to hold one at all.

For Hawthorn Academy, it’s a tradition they were able to keep even with all the safety and health guidelines of COVID-19.

That’s because instead of a typical class party, they turn to doing service, both as a school and in each individual class.

“The students really get into it and have fun,” said Halley Miranda, social media specialist. “When they become older students, they look back at all the service they’ve done and given rather than having had class parties. They feel the joy of serving and many of them like it more than a craft they may make and then throw away. They understand when they do service, they’re giving to others.”

Each year, Hawthorn student government leaders lead their classmates to gather food and toy donations to help others in

their community. For three weeks in December, they were receiving contributions toward their goal of 2,020 pounds of food for the Utah Food Bank and 202 toys for the Utah Youth Village.

Through the years, the class service projects have been varied from tying fleece blankets for Bikers Against Child Abuse and filling the school’s food pantry to donating warm clothing to a shelter and making beaded gecko toys for a humanitarian aid trip to Guatemala.

This year, fifth-grade teacher Joy Leavitt got the idea for her class service project from her daughter. Her daughter’s class at another school was writing letters to Santa and dropping them off at Macy’s Department Store. For every letter the store gathered, Macy’s would donate to Make-aWish Foundation.

“We usually sing and help at the assisted living center near us, but with COVID, we couldn’t do that, so this was a perfect

fit with what we are able to do during this time,” Leavitt said.

Leavitt shared the idea with other teachers at Hawthorn, who also had their students write letters.

“We told the students it doesn’t matter if you believe in Santa or not, it can just be a persuasive letter, to work on your writing, and it will benefit those Make-a-Wish students. We could have our online students and the few we have quarantined be able to participate as well because they had an online link,” she said. “It’s just nice to be able to do service and it makes the students feel good. I like them to think of others and it’s fun to see how they’re wanting to make the world a better place.”

Plus, it ties into the curriculum, according to Hawthorn Academy Superintendent/ Lead Director Deborah L. Swensen.

“One element of the International Baccalaureate program is service,” she said.

“Students learn that they are a part of a community. Communities grow stronger as each person gives back to their community.”

Swenson said it got started 12 years ago when Hawthorn Academy opened.

Back then, faculty, staff, parents, students and administration looked at how students could contribute to their school community and the community in which they live.

lder adults in Utah residential facilities started the COVID-19 vaccination process in January. All Utahns age 70 and older are eligible to get the vaccine, but demand far outweighed supply and appointments quickly filled up. Care centers had an advantage because they partnered with pharmacies that brought the vaccine to them.

“We chose to partner with Walgreens Pharmacy to administer the Pfizer vaccines. Three days were set aside for vaccinations. Jan. 7 was the first day of administration to all residents and staff,” said Derek White, senior vice president of Cascades Health, which runs Sandy Health and Rehab on 50 E. 9000 South.

“The vaccine requires two doses 21 days apart, so subsequent dosing days are scheduled on Jan. 28 and Feb. 18. The process went smoothly, with a sore injection site being the most common complaint,” White said.

In South Jordan, vaccinations started at Riverway Assisted Living on Jan. 8. Riverway is run by SAL Management Group, which also manages care centers in Sandy, West Jordan, Holladay, West Valley and other Utah sites. They are all on the same vaccination schedule and also used Walgreens Pharmacy.

For Riverway administrator Jim Scadlock, the vaccine is the light at the end of the tunnel that we’ve all been waiting for. “It’s all paying off. When we get to the 21 days after the second shot on Feb. 19, our building is going to be able to open up for visits with friends and family,” Scadlock said.

“This won’t last forever—just a few more weeks, and it will start to feel normal around here. That’s what I really want people to know,” Scadlock said.

Scadlock’s urgency to get the vaccine administered is personal. In November he urged families to be cautious about holiday get-togethers and shared that his own mother had recently passed away under lockdown conditions.

“My mother lived in assisted living in Pleasant Grove. I had not seen her since March—eight months. In November, my sisters and I received a call from the hospice nurse telling us she wouldn’t

last through the day and that we could come say goodbye.

“An hour later, she quietly slipped away,” Scadlock said.

The CDC reports the risk for severe illness and death from COVID-19 increases with age. Older adults are one of the most vulnerable populations, which is why residential care centers had access to the vaccine. But their ability to protect residents from the virus varies.

Sandy Health and Rehab is a skilled nursing facility. They accept patients directly from hospital discharge. They have a generally sicker population and more residents coming and going. The

rehab center is in the “red zone” on the Utah Department of Health’s dashboard for facilities with outbreaks reported on Jan. 19.

Riverway is an assisted living and memory care residential facility. Their residents are generally healthier and more independent than at a skilled nursing facility. As of Jan. 18, Riverway reports one resident infection with light symptoms and less than five infections in staff members.

Months ago, Scadlock took the initiative to get Riverway certified as a lab so they could do their own rapid testing. He describes the rapid test as a swab in the nostril as opposed to the deep and uncomfortable “brain tickle” of the PCR tests.

CLIA certification allowed Riverway to test after exposures and get results in 15 minutes. This limited quarantine times, during which residents would be restricted to their rooms for at least five days.

Both facilities interviewed for this story said there were no adverse effects or reactions to the vaccine. The Pfizer vaccine does not contain weakened or inactivated strains of the virus. Instead, it uses mRNA to trigger an immune response and produce antibodies.

Older adults who don’t live in facilities can find information about getting the vaccine on the Salt Lake County Health Department’s website, slco.org/health/COVID-19/ vaccine/. They are out of vaccines at the time of this writing, but people can sign up

The UHSAA aligned its schools for possibly the last time

he Utah High School Activities Association made its biannual changes to school region alignments. The adopted proposals have been applauded and scrutinized.

“Looks like Region 7 was picked by throwing darts on a map,” Derek Erickson, a concerned fan, commented after the alignment was announced.

According to the Utah High School Activities Association’s constitution, the Board of Trustees has the responsibility and authority to classify its member schools and assign them to regions within the classification. This year may be the last year of regions as we know it.

Considerations for alignment include fair competition, school enrollment, travel costs, and natural rivalries.

Region 7 has a 348-mile spread. Uintah High School in Vernal was placed in the 5A region with Cedar Valley, Cottonwood, Hillcrest, Payson, Stansbury, and Tooele high schools. Making it one of the most scrutinized region placement divisions.

“We can’t just look at the numbers of the school and say, ‘Hey, because you have 2,000 students you should play against other schools that have 2,000 students. We need to look at the balance,” Juab School District board president Dale Whitlock said.

Hillcrest has over 2,100 students; Cottonwood and Uintah both have over 1,600 enrolled.

“We are absolutely excited for realignment,” Hillcrest Athletic Director Scott Carrell said. “We have regions and the RPI (rating performance index used to seed teams at state tournaments), they don’t work together very well. When they started to put together the changes we were put in a very competitive region in Utah County.

We sat down with our coaches and asked for that to be changed. We knew that in order for us to build our programs we needed to be put with similar schools. They told us we would have to travel more, but we were OK with that.”

The teams at Hillcrest realize there will be challenges.

“We know that not everyone will be on board, but we are excited to be able to build our programs back up,” Carrell said.

“We are looking at ways to have hotspots on buses to help with homework and more opportunities for distance learning.”

Many other schools were also enthusiastic about their new placement.

“We are excited about our new region,” Copper Hills Athletic Director Ben Morley said. “Mainly because of the proximity of the member schools and having West Jordan back in Region 3.”

West Jordan and Copper Hills have a natural rivalry again in Region 3 and are located just four miles from each other. They have played 25 football games against each

other and Copper Hills has only won once, in 2013.

It is not the only rival to be preserved in the current alignment; Hunter and Granger, Kearns and Taylorsville in Region 2; Herriman, Riverton, and Mountain Ridge now all reside in Region 3; Bountiful, Viewmont, and Woods Cross in Region 5; Olympus and Skyline in Region 6; and Alta and Jordan in Region 8.

Roy administrators asked to be moved from Region 1, in northern Utah, to Region 2. They stated competitive balance as their reasoning. Roy last won a state championship in 2012 in softball. West High School won Region 2’s most recent title in 2019 in softball, but Granger has not been a state champion since 1979 in boys baseball.

In the upcoming season, Region 2 will consist of Cyprus, Granger, Hunter, Kearns, Taylorsville, West and Roy. “I like our region,” new Taylorsville head football coach Chris Rosales said. “I just wish that winning a region championship meant more. With the new RPI, it has all changed.”

The UHSAA Region 3 will consist of Bingham, Copper Hills, Herriman, Mountain Ridge, Riverton and West Jordan.

Because of an increase in enrollment Mountain Ridge was moved from 5A to 6A in all sports.

Region 5 includes Bountiful, Woods Cross, Bonneville, Box Elder, Northridge, and Viewmont. Region 6 contains Brighton, East, Highland, Murray, Olympus, Skyline and Park City. Region 8 is comprised of two other Salt Lake County schools including Jordan and Alta.

“I think no regions in our alignment will be beneficial for every school in the

state of Utah,” Carrell said. “Then games could be scheduled against teams of like opponents, more participation is the ultimate goal. It would not work for every sport, but we need to make goals to improve.”

UHSAA is exploring options for its realignment in two years. Some of those ideas could include the adoptions of no regions allowing teams to make schedules of their choosing. l

The teams at Hillcrest realize there will be challenges.

“We know that not everyone will be on board, but we are excited to be able to build our programs back up,” Carrell said. “We are looking at ways to have hotspots on buses to help with homework and more opportunities for distance learning.”

Many other schools were also enthusiastic about their new placement.

“We are excited about our new region,” Copper Hills Athletic Director Ben Morley said. “Mainly because of the proximity of the member schools and having West Jordan back in Region 3.”

West Jordan and Copper Hills have a natural rivalry again in Region 3 and are located just four miles from each other. They have played 25 football games against each other and Copper Hills has only won once, in 2013.

It is not the only rival to be preserved in the current alignment; Hunter and Granger, Kearns and Taylorsville in Region 2; Herriman, Riverton, and Mountain Ridge now all reside in Region 3; Bountiful, Viewmont, and Woods Cross in Region 5; Olympus and Skyline in Region 6; and Alta and Jordan in Region 8.

Roy administrators asked to be moved from Region 1,

in northern Utah, to Region 2. They stated competitive balance as their reasoning. Roy last won a state championship in 2012 in softball. West High School won Region 2’s most recent title in 2019 in softball, but Granger has not been a state champion since 1979 in boys baseball.

In the upcoming season, Region 2 will consist of Cyprus, Granger, Hunter, Kearns, Taylorsville, West and Roy. “I like our region,” new Taylorsville head football coach Chris Rosales said. “I just wish that winning a region championship meant more. With the new RPI, it has all changed.”

The UHSAA Region 3 will consist of Bingham, Copper Hills, Herriman, Mountain Ridge, Riverton and West Jordan.

Because of an increase in enrollment Mountain Ridge was moved from 5A to 6A in all sports.

Region 5 includes Bountiful, Woods Cross, Bonneville, Box Elder, Northridge, and Viewmont. Region 6 contains Brighton, East, Highland, Murray, Olympus, Skyline and Park City. Region 8 is comprised of two other Salt Lake County schools including Jordan and Alta.

“I think no regions in our alignment will be beneficial for every school in the state of Utah,” Carrell said. “Then games could be scheduled against teams of like opponents, more participation is the ultimate goal. It would not work for every sport, but we need to make goals to improve.”

UHSAA is exploring options for its realignment in two years. Some of those ideas could include the adoptions of no regions allowing teams to make schedules of their choosing.

Community generosity spreads to South Jordan Elementary children

he generosity of the South Jordan Elementary community surprised first-year principal Bev Griffith.

It was February 2020 when Griffith took the helm of the elementary school so when families approached her and started giving items to her to provide for children in need this past December, she was genuinely taken back with appreciation.

“I had a couple families just come and give me things for families for the winter and holidays and then people just started donating and donating,” she said. “We just got 14 hams donated, on top of bags of food. We have books and toys, hygiene items and so many wonderful things for them. It’s so wonderful.”

The Angel Tree effort provided for 18 families.

Food was sorted and distributed to families in three bags – main course, lunch and bread, and snacks and personal hygiene items. Other items were given to families matching the ages of the children. l

Heart baskets to gnomes: Early Light Academy students learn about Scandinavia

arly Light Academy students set aside time to understand a little about Scandinavian culture — from its geography to notable people — as part of the school’s Culture Day. “We’re planning on having students learn about the Vikings for the Day of History, so we thought we’d keep in the same region for Culture Day, so students have some context,” said Early Light curriculum director Shannon Berry about the 12th annual Culture Day. The school’s annual Day of History actually will be extended a week to accommodate all students’ schedules during COVID-19. The event was slated for late January.

Culture Day as well as Day of History and history fair, which is scheduled at the end of the school year, are included in the school’s charter, but it’s more than that, Berry said.

“It’s one of our traditions that our school and our board wanted to keep and hold for some normalcy, even in a different-looking year. Not only do our students look forward to it, our teachers do. It’s a fun part of who we are and it’s an interactive learning

break from our usual school days,” she said.

On Culture Day, students learned a little about the culture and traditions, the geography, famous inventions, and notable people from Sweden, Iceland, Finland, Norway, and Denmark, Berry said.

The day included lessons about the region and had activities to enhance those. For example, as kindergartners and first-graders learned about the countries, they made paper flags that decorated their classrooms or hallways. After learning about the region’s geography, fifth-graders made large maps of the countries on posters that adorned their hallways.

Third-graders learned about Denmark’s famous author, Hans Christian Andersen, and some classes acted out his fairy tales while others wrote biography assignments about him.

Second- and fourth-graders not only had lessons about the region, but also took time to appreciate some of their traditions and crafts.

Second graders decorated a paper pine tree with gnomes, Danish heart baskets, and reindeer.

“It was like a winter wonderland,” Berry said, which also tied into fourth-graders learning about “hygge,” a Danish and Norwegian word for a cozy and comfortable atmosphere.

“They decorated the halls with mittens, books, sweaters, board games, hot cocoa, warm socks, and snowflakes – things that you think of with warmth and comfy,” she said.

Sixth graders made Danish heart baskets out of felt and also had a 30-minute zoom call with a teenager in Finland. Junior high students put on Hans Christian Andersen plays, which were recorded and shared with families along with an interactive slide show that highlighted each grade’s activities.

“Usually, the community is invited in, but we couldn’t do it this year,” Berry said, adding that they followed protocol to ensure students’ privacy in sharing it with their community. “I was so happy to see that in less than 24 hours our virtual Scandinavian culture fair had been viewed over 1,100 times. I call that a huge success.”

with faculty that normally teach physical education, library, music and social-emotional classes providing instruction about the Vikings time period with NearPod lessons as well as with hands-on learning activities.

Teachers may also include some lessons in their regular day and students will have two days to dress up in the time period, so hybrid students can

take part.

“We usually have Day of History on Fridays and we’re not even in school this year on Fridays, so this way, everyone will get to participate in at least some of it. We’ll also be livestreaming some of the lessons so those kids online will get to experience part of it as well,” Berry said. “It’s a lot of work, but it’s worth it.” l

Since COVID-19 vaccines were approved and rollout began for healthcare workers and teachers, we have all been a little more hopeful that the end of the pandemic is drawing near.

A few weeks ago, vaccinations were expanded to Utahns 70 years of age or older. Vaccinations were prioritized in this manner by the State of Utah to provide protection to those on the front lines of fighting the pandemic and to reduce the number of fatalities among those most vulnerable to COVID-19.

The State is making the determination on which groups will receive vaccinations, but they have recognized that counties and their local health departments are best equipped to carry out the actual vaccine administration. I was able to meet with Salt Lake County Mayor Jenny Wilson, Lt. Gov. Deidre Henderson and health officials from both the county and state as we discussed the best way to vaccinate as many people as possible. The State of Utah is working hard to obtain more vaccines from the federal government and our county is dedicated to getting vaccines to residents as soon as we receive each batch.

Your Salt Lake County Health Department has been hard at work preparing and executing the administration of the COVID-19 vaccine. In the national vetting of the vaccine, no steps were skipped to ensure its safety and efficacy. I have seen the vaccine administered at the Mountain America Expo Center and the process is orga-

nized and sanitary. As of Jan. 19, the Salt Lake County Health Department had administered 21,400 vaccines. As you are eligible to obtain the vaccine, I encourage you to do so. The faster you and those around you can get vaccinated, the better off we will all be.

Here is some additional information that may be helpful: Hospital healthcare workers are being vaccinated by their employers. Long-term care facility healthcare workers are being vaccinated through their employers by Walgreens, CVS and Community Nursing Services.

All other healthcare workers who live or work in Salt Lake County are being vaccinated by the Salt Lake County Health Department.

Teachers and other school staff will have their vaccines administered through their school district via Community Nursing Services (CNS), but information can be found at cnscares.org/covid19vaccine-educator Those 70 years of age or older can sign up to be notified of vaccination appointments at SaltLakeHealth.org (click “COVID” then click “Vaccine”) or can obtain more information by calling the Salt Lake County Health Department at (385) 468-7468.

Psych 101: What is gaslighting?

I

f you’ve tuned into the federal news at any point during the past four years, you’ve probably heard a phrase or two about President Donald Trump gaslighting America. Even though the term has been thrown about rather loosely at times, it seems to be becoming part of our common collective discourse. Personally, I wanted to make sure I really understood this term, and the research behind it, before evaluating the claims made about our current political climate. I’d like to take a moment to define and clarify gaslighting, discuss its prevalence, and illuminate potential harmful impacts.

The term “gaslighting” has been used to describe abuse involving emotional and intellectual manipulation, most often recognizable through mind-manipulation strategies. Gaslighting often leads to a person questioning their sanity, perceptions of reality, and/or memories.

Even though the term was recently popularized in politics, gaslighting has been well recognized within psychology research for decades. One of the first mentions of gaslighting was on June 21, 1969. Russell Barton and J.A. Whitehead published an article in “The Lancet” where they outlined two cases in which “there were definite plots to remove an unwanted and restricting relative

by securing admissions to a mental hospital.”

They compared this to the storyline of a play titled “Gas Light” by Patrick Hamilton where a husband tries to get rid of his wife by driving her into a lunatic asylum. Dr. Paige Sweet attributes the common usage of the term to a story as well. In the 1944 film

by George Cukor, “Gaslight,” a husband attempts to isolate his wife by making her believe she is insane. “His eponymous tactic is to dim and brighten the gaslights and then insist she is imagining it. (He) aims to undermine (her) sense of self and everyday life, to confuse and distort her reality such that she must accept his imposed reality in place of her own.”

The term appeared minimally throughout the 1970s and 1980s, but eventually it began to recur in research as the focus on interpersonal relationships intensified. In 2007, Dr. Robin Stern published “The Gaslight Effect” focusing on how to identify manipulation in relationships.

As might be apparent from the contextual history of the term, gaslighting is of importance in domestic violence research and intimate partner violence (IPV) literature. “Gaslighting is a conscious or unconscious form of psychological abuse that occurs when a perpetrator distorts information

to confuse a victim, triggering the victim to doubt their memory and sanity,” defines Dr. Madeline Tormoen.

In the popular conversation, confusion, distortion and anxiety are all recognizable as consequences of gaslighting. However, the potential impacts of gaslighting can quickly become more harmful and severe. Those being gaslit may start to question their own perceptions and lose trust in their own experience of reality.

Tormoen described how gaslighting may often affect memory, contribute to emotional abuse and interpersonal abuse, lead to a victim undermining their sanity, and betrayal. “Gaslighting can also prevent domestic violence victims from accessing institutional resources that would help them escape the abuse. The very institutions set up to help victims can become part of the gaslighting process,” she described.

In addition, gaslighting may contribute to double-binding and depersonalization, resulting in losing a sense of self, multiple perceptions of reality, and varied internal versions of reality.

Gaslighting creates hostile social environments. Sweet and others have argued that gaslighting is not just a psychological tactic, but a sociological phenomenon as well.

“When perpetrators mobilize gender-based stereotypes, structural inequalities, and institutional vulnerabilities against victims with whom they are in an intimate relationship, gaslighting becomes not only effective, but devastating.”

South Jordan community comes together to thank educators

his winter, about 1,000 school employees in South Jordan were thanked for not only supporting students’ education, but also for teaching during the hard and uncertain times surrounding COVID-19.

There were cards from the mayor and City Council, Jordan School Board, South Jordan’s state house representative and senator, the chamber of commerce, Rotary Club, Jordan Education Foundation, and residents, who were part of an “unprecedented community effort to thank our teachers and school staffs here in South Jordan,” Mayor Dawn Ramsey said.

Daybreak and LiveDaybreak donated funds to the thank-you drive so $50 gift cards were distributed and with the help of Mountain America, they were purchased without any fees.

“We’re excited to support teachers who love what they do,” said Spencer Carver, who is with Mountain America business development, and has served on the Jordan Education Foundation three years. “They’re our frontline workers supporting our kids in South Jordan.

We want them to know we value them.”

Right before winter break, Ramsey, Rep. Susan Pulsipher, and Jordan School Board Vice President (now President) Tracy Miller distrib-

uted the cards, letters and gift cards to South Jordan schools.

The three formed a bond and a group, which they call “Serving South Jordan” and look for service opportunities in their hometown. They started by serving seniors, providing letters, masks and sanitizers to some of the population’s most vulnerable during the pandemic.

“With all the negativity, we wanted to bring a positive focus,” Miller said. “We want to give back to people and recognize them for the good they do in the world.”

So, after helping seniors, they asked themselves, “Who’s next?” Miller said. “We all said teachers. We want to support them.”

This was before the state legislature promised to provide a $1,500 one-time bonus for licensed educators and non-administrative staffers a $1,000 bonus who are teaching in-person.

Pulsipher, who has previously served on the Jordan School Board, said there would be further discussions about extending it to the online teachers as well, but in the meantime, she hoped this would show a support from the community they serve.

Ramsey, who has served in the PTA leadership, said the community effort easily fell in

“It didn’t take much when we mentioned what we wanted to do. Everyone in the community recognizes our educators’ sacrifice and heroic efforts. We’re so grateful,” she said.

Pulsipher said that the thank-you letters will be something they can appreciate and reread.

“Sometimes, they may only write or hear frustrations from people, but these are from the same community who truly appreciates them,” she said. “Some people thanked us for thinking to reach out to them; they were so excited to participate. It warms my heart that they want to be a part of it. It’s a small way to bring some good news in what has been a difficult year.”

Miller agrees: “We want teachers to rec-

ognize we know how difficult it has been and we want to continue to support them and the learning process.”

Ramsey said that sometimes people just need someone to initiate the appreciation effort. Once the effort got underway, even more people stepped up to thank the teachers from writing and gathering the notes to sorting them for easy delivery.

“We have an amazing South Jordan community and our group provides opportunities for us to serve our own, but the story isn’t about us,” she said. “It’s about expressing our gratitude for the service these teachers and staff members are providing and how everyone stepped up to make it happen. It’s a great way to end the year on a high note.” l

Paper, tape and pennies: Eastlake’s STEM activities engaging students

E

astlake Elementary fourth grader Tyler Castleberry said his paper and tape bridge was tested for strength by placing pennies on it.

“It held 100 pennies, but we used lots of layers of paper and it took several tries,” he said. “We had to keep doing it to see what worked. Our first one fell apart and our second one didn’t have enough layers to support the pennies.”

That is just one of the activities he has done during a STEM rotation at school. He also liked seeing lions and giraffes in one of the 3-D panoramic videos when he used the virtual reality googles and learned how they worked.

“We’re always learning something new,” he said, adding that one day he’d like to develop a new kind of technology to draw up plays as a basketball coach. “It would just be amazing to be able to write out plays in different ways using techniques of a technology board.”

Eastlake Principal Suzanne Williams said that in the past year, Eastlake has “come a long way in our STEM lessons.”

Not only have they borrowed the virtual reality goggles, they’ve used their Land Trust funds to purchase and introduce MakeyMakeys, Ozobots, Spheros, Bee-bots, Little Bits, logic games and other items to the stu-

dent, Williams said.

Recently, they applied for a LiveDaybreak grant to purchase their own VR googles, a Coder Z LEGO set or STEM tables.

“This year, especially, the school needs to offer some fun learning activities because of the anxiety and stress surrounding COVID-19,” Williams said. “Kids are loving these STEM lessons and we’re getting students career and college ready. These activities may pique their interest when they build a bridge, do marble runs or any of these activities and it may result in an engineering job or a career that has yet to develop as they pursue as interests.”

They also may spark an idea that can be used in the virtual fifth- and sixth-grade science fair, she said.

The 800 in-person students are learning how to problem-solve, be creative, and work as a group when they’re in their 45-minute STEM rotations.

“It’s fun to see their excitement and how they’re not afraid to get involved and try again if something doesn’t work the first time, which is an invaluable tool,” Williams said.

Williams credits her 25-hour per week instructor, Sarah Broadbent, for expanding the program.

gy-based, it’s important that students know the basis and are able to apply it to their future careers,” Broadbent said. “It’s rewarding to see kids reach to technology, coding, and STEM activities. It’s important to bring in all aspects, to solve problems in creative ways and to think outside the box.”

For example, with Makey-Makeys, Broadbent not only let them experiment, but made sure they understood why they worked.

She taught them about simple circuits and how they needed to complete the circuit.

They also learned about short circuits, LEDs and polarity through putting their circuits together and testing them.

Through the activity, they learned how to troubleshoot if it didn’t initially work. Students asked themselves if the positive circuit trace ever came in contact with the negative circuit trace or to make sure they didn’t ever touch when they made their battery connections.

Tyler’s 6th-grade sister, Grace, said she hooked the wires and made sounds using electricity.

“It’s really cool and I could make it play the piano, the bongos and flappy bird,” she said. “I could use different tools like a nail, paperclip, tinfoil and playdough. Maybe if I become a computer scientist or ophthalmologist, knowing some things from the STEM activities would be really helpful. I want to be an interior designer so I can learn how to measure the space and items I’d use to decorate. By knowing about electricity, it would be helpful to know where to put things for the best lighting and the maximum light I could use.”

Younger students were challenged with other STEM activities like Bee-Bots. BeeBots are table-top robots that actually look

like bees that can be programmed to move forward and back and turn left and right by pressing the corresponding arrow keys on its back. Students understand cause and effect, directional language and early programming, Broadbent said.

For second-grader Scarlett Seamons, it’s fun.

“I can make it move left or right, forward or backward,” she said. “Backwards is my favorite. If it were on the ground, it could follow my teacher.”

Scarlett also liked playing the circuit maze game that uses three different colors that makes them glow and has a robot that follows the code.

“We made a unicorn robot, but it didn’t work so we had to do it two or three times or five until it did,” she said. “We were problem-solving.”

Her mother, Meg, pointed out that Scarlett has applied it to real life as she was making gluten-free cookies.

“The recipe doesn’t always work even when she follows the ingredients and directions, so she has learned to keep trying to see what will work and why it didn’t the first time,” she said, adding that she appreciates what they’re learning at school. “We immerse STEM in our home with what they’re doing or with their toys and games that are fun, but educational so they learn how things work and why or why they don’t.”

Scarlett’s brother, Oliver, is a fourth grader who liked making his Ozobot spin like a tornado as it followed colors on a dotted line he created.

“I made a color code it can follow and move how I want it to,” he said. “I’d like to code more and be able to tutor in coding, math or division and multiplication.” l

Students grow into leaders through student council

erving on student council can change lives.

Jason White has seen this happen in his time of advising Welby Elementary’s student council — including this year during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“At the beginning of the year, they talk about anti-bullying, about leadership and about being an example,” he said. “But they also learn about giving when we do service projects and want to make a difference in people’s lives.”

Many times, White has seen students break out of their bubbles. This year, he’s witnessed a shy girl become a quiet, but confident leader.

“She’s a really good student. She’s one of those kids that when she says something everyone listens. She has something to say, it’s really profound,” White said. “She’s a soft-spoken girl, but she’s totally comfortable and a good reader when she does the announcements. That’s helped her overcome her shyness in public speaking and definitely when she does a presentation in front of class.”

Often times, the announcements may include things at school including fundraisers, spirit days and school lunch as well as what the student council is working on – this year, introducing the Golden Gate Kids program to the school.

Similar to the Golden Gate program at nearby Bingham High, the program focuses on making friends and a stronger community.

“In a nutshell, it’s an anti-bullying program, with its aim at becoming a more friendly school,” he said, adding that the student leaders are helping change the attitudes of themselves and others at Welby.

Every month, the student leaders have a pledge point that they relay to their peers. The students began the program with the pledge of “I will smile at others.” In December, they introduced. “I will be a true friend.” Other pledges include treating others and themselves with respect, they will be problem-solvers and they are in charge of their own happiness.

White said then, the students are responsible to communicate that to their peers. They do this through hanging posters and reminders in the halls as well as share the pledge point on the school announcements.

“They talk about the program and challenge the students on whatever the focus that month is. This month, it’s being a better friend.

They talk about what does a better friend means to them, whoever’s turn it is on student council to do the announcements,” he said.

“It’s great that from the lessons that are taught, they can take that slogan on themselves and become that kind of person to better themselves and those students around them.”

ample and then a challenge statement.

“It’s not something specific like I challenge you to talk to five new people or wave to a new person. They do say, ‘how can you be a friend to others? Being a friend to others is going out of your way and saying hi to people; so I challenge you today to work on being a better friend to those around you,’” White said.

Assistant Principal Allyson Stovall introduced the program to the school.

“There’s an air of kindness where kids are helping each other, smiling and waving back — and the kindness is contagious,” she said.

The lessons are printed for teachers, who give it to students in class. Stovall and Principal Aaron Ichimuru read a story to the class to match the pledge, “I Will Be a True Friend.”

It’s also shared with parents, who are given a QR code to scan and learn more about the monthly pledge point and research behind it.

The purpose is to teach students to build positive connections to not only their personal life, their classmates and their family, but also to the community.

There also is a faculty inspirational component to the program.

“Our faculty have bought into it and accept the challenge. They held a welcome party at the beginning of school, smiling, cheering and having a fun morning that welcomed them to school. They held posters that read ‘you can do it,’ which just sets the mood for students to have friends and make those connections,” she said. “It’s an attitude-changer for our teachers and our students.”

That is reinforced in the new Morning Meetings, a time where all teachers greet students in their class, give students a time to share and then, lay out the day’s schedule so students can focus, Stovall said.

“It’s helped to have student council explain a pledge point and create a way to make it memorable to students,” she said. “Then, to see them do it, smiling at others, becoming true friends — it’s very student-motivated.”

Stovall saw it work at Bingham High when someone was sitting alone in the cafeteria and others would join that person or invite him to sit with them.

“I hope it will be that way at Welby,” she said, adding that she hopes in a nonCOVID-19 year to have Bingham High Golden Gate students share their experiences in person with Welby students. “I struggled in elementary school, being bullied and feeling out of place so I want to bring this program to every child. It matters that they matter. I want them to connect to teachers, not just in an academic way, but in a personal way and build those relationships.”

Stovall said that already this school year, the amounts of arguments on the playground and disrespect for one another has decreased significantly and she credits the change of culture in the school.

White added that the Golden Gate goals tie into a leadership conference that the students attended virtually at the beginning of the year, so student leaders are able to pull those examples into their role play and communication with their peers. l

Fear sells, but why does the food industry use anxiety to sell products? I mean, if there’s one thing the seven billion people on this planet agree on, it’s that we need food. (And Baby Yoda is adorable. That’s universally accepted.)

When COVID hit last spring, I heard we’d run out of beef by autumn. My husband lost his mind. Someone told me canned vegetables would be as valuable as gold, which is good because I’d rather wear a can of peas on a chain around my neck than have to eat them.

Experts tell us food is plentiful and cheaper than ever before. Just the food left over from Las Vegas buffets could feed several Third World countries for generations.

They’d all develop diabetes and heart disease, but they’d have plenty of food.

And that’s the other fear; the idea that the food we eat, even broccoli and kale, has no nutritional value because the soil’s been depleted of nutrients and we’re consuming the dietary equivalent of Rice Krispies for each meal.

So, we hear companies proclaiming to have discovered new, perfect foods. Not just foods— Super Foods (with a heartbreaking origin story). They ask questions like, Do you poop every day at noon? Are you often irritable? Well, you’re eating the wrong food!

I used to drink water out of the hose in my front yard. I’m sure I’ll die full of mercury, lead and chlorine.

Spinach and romaine lettuce routinely try to kill us, and don’t get me started on GMO conspiracy theories. I don’t have that kind of time. Are apples still good for us?

Can we eat corn without worrying about growing a third arm? Does everything have to be organic, farm-fresh and certified because according to Facebook, we’re all doomed!

I know Americans don’t have the best diets but throw me a grass-fed bone. We’re assaulted on all sides and just trying not to dive headfirst into a bucket of chicken for a morning snack.

Let’s drop the fear, food industry, and go back to promoting wellness as we wait to hear if Baby Yoda will be on the next season of “The Mandalorian.” Some things are more important than organic bananas.

aradigm High School junior Reagan Cox wanted to choose what she was learning.

“I was looking for a program that allowed me more freedom in my education,” she said. “I found that in the Jefferson Scholar program.”

Paradigm’s Jefferson Scholar program allows students, or scholars as they are called at the school, to complete state curriculum high school credits as they study topics they choose. The program isn’t a lecture format from teachers, or mentors, rather, the scholars select a topic they want to learn about, research it and present it in one of several ways to their peers and mentor, said mentor Lisa Mauer who originated the program.

That was what Cox wanted.

“We were learning about Italy, and I chose to learn more about gelato since I have an interest in foods. I was so excited to learn about what I wanted and because I have that interest in it, I’ll be able to remember what I learned,” she said. “I’ve also learned about Egypt’s female pharaoh, which came from learning about gelato. I learned ice cream came from Egypt and it started because of their pharaoh, who was female. I’ve shared that excitement of learning about it with friends. It’s never happened before that my education is joyful. I’m learning and excited about it.”
