PIGS & WIGS? WELBY ELEMENTARY’S FUNDRAISER EARNED TOP DOLLAR

ecently, Baby Yoda and her owner, Justin McMullan, the grandson of Welby Elementary’s first principal, Clell McMullan, came to visit the 40-year-old school.

The purpose?

To allow 11 teachers and Principal Aaron Ichimura, who promised if students met their fundraising goal of $15,000, to give her a big kiss.

“The pig was called Baby Yoda, so I was expecting this little piglet,” third grade teacher Carolyn Smith said. “It was huge.”

Surprise!

Welby PTA President Polly Uffens estimated that the 500-pound darling had plenty of places the faculty, wearing bright lipstick, could place their lips—foot, ear, shoulder, back, leg.

“We drew slips of paper where they would kiss the pig,” Uffens said. “The actual pig kissing was streamed into all of the classrooms. I think it was great; they all got a front-row seat!”

In fact, the PTA also was able to post the recorded video to the school website so online students and families could watch it as well. Students at school got to walk by the pig before the event took place.

That wasn’t all.

Ichimura also wore four different wigs during the week, selected by students who brought in the most amount of money in the fundraiser. The wigs, ordered off of Amazon, ranged Welby Elementary fifth-grade teacher Casey Draper was one of 11 teachers who volunteered to kiss a pig as an incentive for students to reach their Continued page 5

“The kids just loved the wigs,” she said, adding that she scoured the internet for ideas. “He stood outside each morning with the wigs, and the kids would see him when

they came to school. It was perfect.”

Those kids were led by a third grade boy, who brought in about $700.

“We had the highest individual earners that we can recall,” she said about the nofuss fundraiser that just asked students’ families and friends to make an online donation to the school. “I think this was convenient for parents and students could just send an

email to others so they could easily access the pledge website.”

Not only did the students surpass their goal, but they brought in more than $5,000 more and it reduced the time to count cash.

There also was an added safety factor of not touching the money during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Local artists on display at South Jordan City Hall

E

very month, the South Jordan Arts Council displays the work of two local artists at the South Jordan City Hall.

November’s featured artists are painter Durga Ekambaram and military graphic designer David Lankford.

Ekambaram’s paintings are vibrant and colorful, and she utilizes a variety of different techniques, including pointillism and reverse glass painting. She’s particularly fond of intricate swirling patterns and wavy mandalas, which feature prominently in many of her works.

“The patterns are called zentangles,” Ekambaram said.

“I really like working on them, because it kind of, you know, sharpens your skill, and it takes a lot of concentration. You can see it in almost all of my works. Anywhere I can incorporate zentangles, I do.”

Her three favorite pieces in this exhibition are “Lyme Park,” “Mysore Palace” and “Bharathiyar.”

“Lyme Park” depicts the English estate for which it is named: a large stone manor house reflecting into a serene man-made lake, surrounded by well-manicured green gardens. The estate was featured in the 1995 BBC adaptation of Jane Austen’s novel “Pride and Prejudice,” in which it was called Pemberley.

“I’m a very, very ardent Jane Austen fan,” said Ekambaram. “I’m actually writing a fanfiction of ‘Pride and Prejudice.’ It’s a work in progress; I’m hoping one day I could publish it on Amazon. So it’s keeping me busy, but it will be fun.”

“Mysore Palace” depicts an Indian palace of the same name, with high domed ceilings filled with the swirling patterns Ekambaram most likes to paint, swirling with bright blue and gold. “Bharathiyar” is a portrait of one of her favorite poets, composed entirely out of tiny dots of color.

“There are no brushstrokes involved in this painting; it’s just varied sizes of dots,” Ekambaram said. “It’s called pointillism. Bharathiyar is actually a poet from India. So he’s actually supposed to know, like, 16 languages, and he is really famous in India. His verses were a part of our schooling. He’s written a lot about feminism and independence and all those things. So he’s one of my favorite poets.”

works as a professional artist. But she’s lived all over the place. She moved from India to Nebraska, back to India again, then to Georgia, Missouri and now, Utah. In India, Ekambaram worked as an engineer, but she does not have a U.S. work visa—which has been a blessing in disguise.

Without such a demanding job, she has had a lot more time for working on her art, which is where her passions truly lie.

“Even though I did engineering, it was never my calling,” Ekambaram said. “You know, in India, there’s a thing where everybody expects you to get a professional degree.

And so even though my mother was an artist, she was like, ‘You get your proper degree, and then if you want to pursue something else afterward, you do it then.’ I had good grades everything and got a job, but still, my calling was not there.”

Art has provided her with a lot more satisfaction than her “real” job ever did. Since coming to Utah, she’s entered every art competition she could find and received honors in many. She took first place in her division in the 2020 South Jordan Community art show and also currently has some of her works on display at The Blocks in downtown Salt Lake.

“I feel I can be like an example to people, that they can go out of their zones and do something they love, and be recognized for it, because people usually think, the arts are only for people who can achieve the highest level,” Ekambaram said. “But it’s not actually like that. If you keep trying, at some point of time, you know, something will click and you will be recognized.”

If you’ve ever set foot in a military aircraft facility, Maj. David Lankford’s work will probably be immediately familiar to you. The retired Air Force veteran draws incredibly realistic aircraft, carefully rendered with mathematical precision, and prints of his work bedeck many a pilot’s office walls.

War stories with three South Jordan veterans

S

tate-imposed COVID-19 regulations cancelled the annual Veterans Day program at Riverway Assisted Living in South Jordan.

But three veteran residents—Gordon Evans, Robert “Bob” Nixon and Marvin “Marv” Worthington—still wanted to share their thoughts and experiences with the rest of the world.

Gordon Evans, now 94, served during WWII as a sonar operator on the USS Vogelgesang, a Gearing-class destroyer.

“You had to have a musical background to operate the sonar, because you had to be able to tell notes apart from each other, the high notes from the low notes,” said Evans, who plays the cornet. “That was how you could tell if there was anything there. If it’s leaving it makes a lower note, and if it’s approaching, it makes a higher note, and that’s what’s called the Doppler. So they only took people who knew music. My job was to defend the East Coast from submarines. So I wasn’t ever in any combat zones, but it was an important job. We were keeping the country safe.”

When asked if he had any particular stories he wanted to share from his service, Evans’ answer was forceful. “No! That was over 70 years ago,” he said. “But I loved my time in the Navy.”

Bob Nixon, also a WWII vet, is 95 and still sharp as a tack. He joined the Army at age 18, and after completing basic training and noncommissioned officer school, he became a basic training instructor himself.

“My job was training all the soldiers who came in how to fight, how to shoot those guns—especially how to use their rifles, because most of them were from back east, and they had never seen a rifle,” Nixon said. “And so that was very interesting, because they had never ever even seen one, and now I was teaching them how to shoot one. There was one fellow I always told, ‘Don’t put your finger on the trigger until you’re ready to shoot something,’ and he pulled the trigger too soon anyway, and the bullet went right down about 3 feet in front of us. But that’s, you know, one of the things that happens.”

It didn’t take Nixon too long to pick up the infamous drill sergeant mouth, much to his parents’ dismay.

“This is kind of embarrassing, but it’s the truth,” he said. “In those days, as a drill sergeant, you kind of have a different language than most people. You swear a lot. At the time I was in Aberdeen, Maryland, and so my folks flew out to be with me. And I’d always gone to another [Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Satins] ward for church, because there were some cute girls there. But this time, my folks wanted to go to the church on the base. I said, ‘I’ve never been there, but we’ll go.’ So we go.

We start up the stairs into this building where the church was held. And some guy there said, ‘Sgt. Nixon is a Mormon? He’s got the dirtiest mouth of anybody!’”

The night the first atomic bomb was dropped sticks out particularly clearly in his memory. At that point in time, the U.S. Army was getting ready to invade Japan, and Nixon was stationed in New York, helping to convert a 230-foot-long ship into a floating munitions warehouse.

“We used to go into New York [City] every night to goof around,” Nixon said. “Then we’d go back to our base, which was on Staten Island, and get ready for the next day.”

The night President Harry S. Truman dropped the bomb, Nixon and his buddies were hanging out on the roof of the Radio City Music Hall. They had been invited there by a friend of a friend who worked at the neighboring NBC building. And it was from this roof that one of Nixon’s buddies happened to look down into Times Square and see that, despite the late hour, it was full of people—packed with them, and no cars to be seen.

“So we all ran over to that side of the building and looked on the Times building, and it said that the largest bomb ever dropped had destroyed an entire city,” said Nixon. “Now, we were in the Ordnance Department. That’s where they test bombs. And so as we went down the elevator of the NBC building, and we all said ‘Hey, there’s no way this is true. There is no bomb that could destroy a whole city.’”

But when they went downstairs and walked across Times Square, it became apparent that it was true all the same. “All the buildings had chain link fence across the windows— they expected people to break them, I guess,” said Nixon. The place was full of soldiers and sailors in white hats and pretty young women, and there were stands giving out free sodas and hot dogs at each end of the square.

“So we got our hot dogs and started walking from the one end to the other,” said Nixon.

“And the place was just full of women. And women in those days, unlike today, they all had this bright red lipstick, you know, that would come off. And the girls were kissing the sailors,

and they would wipe that red off into their hats, and see just how red they could get their hats to be. You know that famous picture in ‘Life’ magazine, of the sailor kissing the girl who’s leaning way back? I walked right up behind him as he was taking that picture.”

The next day, practically every house had a drunk person lying on its doorstep. But despite the celebrations, the war was not yet over, and Nixon’s unit was shipped off to Japan.

“This was a scary time, because we went down through what they call the Bermuda Triangle,” Nixon said. “Supposedly, there’s wild stories about ships that just disappear there.

And we hit a huge storm. These waves were so large that my ship had to climb them, and after we got to the top, the ship would drop, and the propellers were spinning so fast that when they hit the water again they would jam.” The storm broke the ship’s driveline, and by the time it was repaired, the war was over, so they turned around and went home.

Marv Worthington, an 83-year-old Vietnam war veteran, also has some stories to tell.

He joined the Marines at age 17, hoping to follow in the footsteps of his two older brothers, who had fought in World War II. But instead of being sent to the battlefield, he was sent to Hawaii, where he was made part of the military police.

“I was a patrol driver,” Worthington said.

“I drove the patrol vehicle all over the base, trying to keep things smooth.” There was one part of the base barely anybody went to, because the

jungle was so thick. The only people up there were military prisoners and their guards, there to do hard labor.

“One day I was patrolling up there, and I came up a hill and saw this prison guard with a shotgun, and four prisoners lying on the ground in the prone position, which is what they’re commanded to do in emergencies,” Worthington said. “One of the others prisoners was standing off about 10 feet from the guard, and he had his double-bladed axe, which was meant for cutting vegetation. And he was standing with it raised above his head. And he was getting ready to split that guard in two. He was serious. I could see that there was nothing good going to come out of that situation, that I better shoot the prisoner and put an end to it.”

Worthington immediately pulled over, jumped out of the vehicle and aimed his gun, which he kept loaded, at the prisoner’s head.

“I was pulling the trigger, taking the slack out of it, and I kind of hesitated. I had it aimed at his temple, right here,” said Worthington, indicating the location on his own head. “And it would have taken part of his head off. The bullet was about as big around as my thumb. The prisoner looked out of the corner of his eye and saw me, and then looked at the guard, who had a shotgun pointed at him, and I guess he could see that this just wasn’t a good situation for him to be in, so he dropped the axe behind him and fell face-down on the ground.”

A week later, the prisoner was court-martialed, and Worthington was called to serve

as a witness. He didn’t really want to testify against the prisoner, but he didn’t have much choice.

“You don’t really have a lot of freedom when you’re in the military,” he said. “You do what they tell you to do. I was only 17, and I wasn’t prepared for that kind of stuff. I was more prepared mentally to go into battle. And that’s truly what I wanted—to prove myself in battle, you know, to prove that I was as good as my two brothers had been. They fought at Guadalcanal and Iwo Jima, and all these places, and I never got the opportunity to prove myself that way. Instead I nearly shot an imprisoned Marine and somehow ended up with the, what do you call it. PTSD.” Here he looked around the assisted living center sadly.

“That’s part of why I’m in here.”

Despite that traumatic incident, Worthington enjoyed the first three years of his service. By the fourth, though, he was getting pretty tired of it. So as soon as he had the option to swap from active duty to the reserves and go back home to California, he took it. He was fascinated by the planes they had at the base in California.

“They had what they called AD5N Skyraiders; they used them a lot in Vietnam,” he said. “I was taking flying lessons at the time, and I really wanted to get in one of those things. So he talked to the commanding officer of the company and got permission to do a ride-along in one. “I was a sergeant by that point, so they catered to me a little bit,” he said.

He got all decked out with an oxygen mask, parachute and a too-small crash helmet, and strapped in next to the pilot, who talked him through the purpose of all the delicate instruments in the cockpit. Then, after a slight oxygen mask mishap that led to Worthington getting a face-full of engine fumes, they took off in formation with three other Skyraiders.

And then they began to do elaborate training maneuvers, turning upside-down and executing all sorts of violent turns.

“I was starting to feel kind of woozy from breathing in all that smoke,” said Worthington. “And my mom used to make me lunch to take down to the base, so I didn’t have to eat the military food. She’d always fix me a big lunch. That day I had two tuna fish sandwiches, a banana and dill pickles. So I’m fully loaded.”

He did his best to hold it all in. But then, they did a vertical dive. “You don’t know what a vertical dive is on an aircraft until you’ve been in one,” said Worthington. “You feel like you’re falling right through the bottom of the aircraft. I couldn’t hold it; it came up, and it was dripping down my cheeks. And they didn’t have barf bags. This was a military aircraft, not an airliner.”

He couldn’t just let it out. The cockpit instruments were far too delicate to survive having wet lunch sprayed all over them; they would have shorted out and caused a fire. Unsure of what else to do, he reached over and tapped the pilot on the shoulder. “I couldn’t call him on the radio, because I had a mouth-

ful of food!” said Worthington.

The pilot took one look at Worthington and went pale. He began frantically looking for something, anything, for Worthington to spit into. He found a flight map, folded it into a square bowl shape, and handed it to Worthington, who made use of it until they were able to split off from the group and land.

“I was so embarrassed I could have died,” he said. “I wanted to just get up, open the canopy and jump out of the aircraft. I was a sergeant, you know. I’m supposed to be a rough, tough Marine. And I wasn’t. I was never a rough tough Marine. I was just a Marine.”

Veterans Day means different things to different veterans. When Evans was asked what he thought of it, he gave a shrug. “I think Veterans Day is good,” he said. “I’m very proud to be a veteran, and I’m proud of my service. But I don’t know if I need anyone

making a special fuss over me. I was just doing my job. I would do it all over again.”

“I think it’s a great, great, great day,” Nixon said. “And it’s an honor for them to make so much of it, which I appreciate very much. But the concern I have is, we’ve got veterans now that are young dads. In my day, I didn’t have a wife. I didn’t have children waiting for me. If I got killed, my mother and dad, they were the ones that cried. Today, it’s not just the mother that cries; it’s the children.

I was very angry at the people of America during the return of the Vietnam veterans.

It just really bothered me that [the veterans] would come back, and as they came through the airports, the people would boo them. That bothered me a lot, because I love veterans. All of them.” l

Monte Vista safety patrol becoming leaders in school community

T

his school year, Monte Vista’s safety patrol has undergone a new look, and it’s not just with their safety vests and badges.

Instead of rotating responsibilities throughout the sixth grade, about 40 students stepped up, volunteering for the safety patrol leadership positions, said sixth grade teacher Christie Matheson, who is overseeing the program with sixth grade teacher Ryan Beh-

mer.

The students went through training provided by AAA and have signed contracts promising to be respectful, safe leaders. They have committed to arrive to school early and leave later than the bell hours so they can oversee the safety of their classmates, Principal Nan Ririe said.

“It has gone from where in the past,

some students didn’t listen to them, to now being something where students are showing one another respect and following the safety rules,” Ririe said.

Matheson said the 40 students were divided in half, as squads, each being advised by a teacher. Each squad is divided into two teams, led by a lieutenant, who reports to the squad captain. This way, the teachers check

in with the captain to be assured everyone is there and on task.

Those student positions rotate monthly, allowing students to learn and hold leadership positions, she said.

The 20-member squads also rotate on their duties every other week. They work with about five teachers to ensure crosswalks and sidewalks as well as drop-off and pick-

up lanes are safe. The safety patrol also oversees the bike lock-up area, the playground and school campus where students meet one another or like to ride their bikes on the slopy hills.

They’re also working to develop an inside plan for winter days, which may include patrolling for icy patches on sidewalks, opening doors, monitoring hallways and ensuring students head to their classrooms.

“The students are being positive about their role, wanting to help students be safe,” Matheson said. “Especially during COVID-19, this is giving them a leadership opportunity and a chance to be a role model as they interact with younger students.”

That’s because many of the traditional opportunities, such as reading to younger children, aren’t able to happen during the pandemic.

However, the safety patrol team is looking at other possible ways to branch out. Once they learn communication skills and how

to present themselves, Matheson said she hopes the sixth-graders will talk to younger students, reminding them what they should do to remain safe.

As role models, the safety patrol is looked upon to wear masks and follow health guidelines, finding new ways to build each other up safely instead of giving high-fives, she said.

“Some students truly want to protect others and gain that level of trust and respect,” she said.

They also may look into implement games at recess, reviewing rules and safety equipment, and reaching out to those who may be needing a friend to play with, she said.

“We’re collaborating to learn how they see the school and what they want to do,” she said. “We’re building leadership, and they’re becoming role models. This is an opportunity to guide their learning and build our community.” l

‘The show must go on’—Does it? How? To what extent?

A

fter several high schools along the Wasatch Front were closed for two weeks or brought back on hybrid schedules, theater teachers are questioning the old adage, “the show must go on” and to what extent.

“We take that scenario, ‘the show must go on,’ and change it to ‘one show at a time,’ and ‘one day at a time,’” said theater teacher Adam Wilkins, whose school, Cottonwood High, was shut down and students learned remotely two weeks in mid-October. “It’s really, whatever works well for high school theater departments and their communities.”

Wilkins had planned the typical November musical performance of “Joseph,” only with a reduced cast size of 50 students. That now has been pushed back to 7 p.m., Dec. 3–5 and again on Dec. 7. There also will be a noon matinee on Dec. 5.

“We put recordings of our choreography on YouTube so our students can do their part and practice,” he said while the school was online and no in-person rehearsals were allowed. “We’re trying to keep the kids safe. So, we adapt to how we can do live theatre safely. We wear masks, wash hands, sanitize, decrease numbers of kids, practice intentionally in small numbers of ensembles and follow the Salt Lake County health guidelines.”

Wilkins said that at Cottonwood, patrons—only 500 of the 3,000 seats will be filled and they’ll sit socially distanced—can expect to see the performers in matching black masks.

“We’ll wear masks at performances and rehearsals. That’s nonnegotiable,” he said.

That’s not the same criteria at all high schools as each district determines what’s best for its communities. Nearby Murray High School allows actors to be unmasked for the performances.

Murray High, which also was shut down, allowed its students to rehearse during the two weeks in early October. Murray High students’ show, “Little Women,” was slated for Nov. 12–13 and Nov. 16 as of press deadline.

Students voted on the fall musical, citing a smaller cast and simpler set would be more appropriate during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Draper’s Corner Canyon High experienced one of the highest COVID-19 outbreaks to date in the state. After weeks of online and hybrid schedules in the midst of their rehearsals, theater director Phaidra Atkinson and her students are learning adaptability.

“There’s no normal day; we’re changing things every day,” she said in late October.

“With Shakespeare, we had three weeks of rehearsal, then four weeks where we were shut down. Initially, we weren’t allowed rehearsals while the school was closed, but we were able to get in four more rehearsals during that time, since we are sanctioned under the Utah High School Activities Association.”

And with those extra rehearsals, they

were able to pull off first-place results at the 44th annual Shakespeare Festival, which was held virtually.

“We swept everything; it was awesome,” Atkinson said, adding that they had a watch party over Google Meet. “It was the hardest thing we ever have done— to pull it together so fast. We cried a lot when we won.”

In December, the theater students will take part in three senior one-act student-directed plays as well as “Broadway Backwards” charity fundraiser, both which are restricted to family and friends because of health guidelines.

With the shutdowns, Corner Canyon also moved back its auditions for their February musical, “Matilda.” Currently, they can only allow 300 family or friends in the auditorium per night for the run instead of the typical 1,300 patrons.

“It’s my hope and dream they’ll raise the 25% auditorium capacity to 50% if it’s safe,” she said. “The musical is absolutely worth doing. It’s these students’ joy, their passion and their love. We’ll take a huge hit financially, but students need something to look forward to.”

Atkinson said that she is glad she double-cast the musical as already she had 10 students in quarantine in the first 10 days of rehearsal.

“We’ve filmed some things and put them online so those at home can learn at home,” she said. “It’s so depressing for them to be at

home and miss out. It’s a show that we don’t have the rights to film the entire show or to stream it, but it’s a show that’s right for our students.”

Nearby, Bingham High had planned a December screening of their filmed Shakespeare production of “Hamlet,” but in late October, students shifted to online as COVID-19 cases rose at their school and the decision was made to move it to mid-January.

“With the school closure it will be impossible for us to get everything shot and edited before Christmas break,” said show director, Jason Purdie. “We are hoping to get everything at least filmed before we leave for the break, but it all depends on how things go with COVID over the next few weeks. Hopefully, no other cast members will get COVID or quarantined, and hopefully there won’t be any more school closures. The schedule has become extremely tight at this point.”

Purdie, himself, was quarantined in late September, but was able to virtually meet with his students along with his co-director, Brittany Anderson.

Alta and Brighton high schools reached a peak number of COVID-19 cases in late September and early October, according to Canyons School District’s COVID-19 dashboard, so classes moved online. They returned on a hybrid schedule, but by mid-October, when cases dropped, students returned to full on-campus instruction for those in-person

learners.

In mid-October, Alta theatre teacher Linze Struiksma was quarantined, along with six of her students, awaiting COVID-19 test results.

“I’ve had parents there helping as I Zoom in to be there during the three-hour rehearsals,” she said. “We’re adapting the best we can, given what we’ve gone through with being closed down, being on a hybrid schedule, and now quarantining and doing lesson plans and rehearsals virtually. We literally change what we’re doing every week. It’s teaching me and teaching the kids to be adaptable.”

Struiksma, who was able to have her kids compete and take second place in their ensemble performance in the virtual Shakespeare Festival, has been cautious in making theater plans for the year, trying to adapt to the circumstances.

In mid-September, she talked with her seniors.

“I didn’t feel comfortable with a full show. I was really nervous. COVID cases were on the rise, and we didn’t know what it was going to look like,” Struiksma said.

They decided to perform in a showcase featuring groups of up to three students singing or performing a scene together and having two narrators bringing it together in a storyline. A tech student was assigned to each group to help design their set and costumes.

“It works well to be able to rehearse in

small groups, so there’s limited interaction and if we have to (because of students being in quarantine), we can remove a scene,” she said. “The kids came up with the theme and created it.”

The show, “Divine Connections,” examines the relationships humans have—from those with siblings and parents to platonic and romantic relationships. The show was scheduled to be held at the school’s new Performing Arts Center at 7 p.m., Nov. 12–13, with only 25% of the auditorium filled with patrons.

“We wear masks at rehearsals and had planned not to wear them during the second tech week or dress rehearsals when on stage and created a system for them when they were off,” Struiksma said. “But now, we’ll be rethinking that and talking to parents.”

She said that she also is rethinking the production of “Little Mermaid” for February, with concerns about producing a full musical during COVID-19 and the costs involved with it, when seating is limited.

“We rehearsed over Google Meet and learned what we could put into the scene, but it’s hard to adjust,” she said. “When we were allowed to continue to rehearse in person, kids came in, we did a symptom and temperature check, we were masked, 6 feet apart and took frequent breaks. When we could do virtual rehearsals on monologues, we did that to elimi-

nate the risk.”

On top of working under COVID restrictions, Davis also had other concerns. As Brighton is under construction, she got news that the new auditorium wasn’t going to be ready in time for the show, so Davis moved the Nov. 19–25 production of “Hamlet” to Butler Middle—an hour before fall break, during which she got married.

“It was a crazy time, but we rallied through,” she said. “The students were so diligent and worked so hard. Nobody in the production tested positive as of now and we put their personal safety first.”

Davis did have one student pull out when rehearsals went virtually, which she respected the immediate decision was shared with her.

She also said technical aspects were impacted as they could only talk virtually, so some parts were delayed.

“It’s been hard since I love to see actors grow in their acting, and because of the circumstances, I’m not able to coach them as much as I would,” Davis said. “It’s been challenging as some activities rely on groups, but when we break it down, it forces me to be creative and find innovative methods. The show will go on—if we can continue in a safe climate.”

South Jordan races may be virtual, but the running is real

I

n regular years, South Jordan holds seven races a year—but 2020 is not a regular year.

When the pandemic threatened to cancel South Jordan’s races completely back in late March, the city’s Parks and Recreation department found a way to move them online. Now, after introducing the Virtual Race Series, instead of having no races, they have more races than ever before. They’ve gone from holding a race every two months or so,

to holding a race pretty much every week.

“Virtual race” may sound like an oxymoron on the surface, but it works better than you might think. In a standard race, you have a whole bunch of people running down the

same course at the same time. In a virtual race, you still have a whole bunch of people running down the same course; just not at the same time. The running is still very much a real-world action, with real sweat and real sore muscles. It’s only the planning that’s virtual.

“When it started off, we kind of posted a race route per week that people could run on their own time at any point during the week, and they could send us their times to win prizes,” said South Jordan Recreation Coordinator Brad Vaske. “We had anywhere from about 200 to 400 people participate in those weekly from about the end of March all the way through the middle of September.”

to the event and the weather, that 200-400 range represents a pretty substantial increase over the 100-300 people the department has seen register for past in-person races.

“What the virtual race series has done is, it’s actually allowed us to include that base group of runners, but also expand out and reach people that, you know, weren’t necessarily able to attend our events on a single date. We actually have people doing this that have never run in one of our races before,” Vaske said. “A lot of them had conflicts— they worked weekends, or they just never had the time to attend one of those events, but they do have time to go out run routes on their own time.”

Each virtual race series lasts 10 weeks.

Registration costs $30, which gets you access to a new running route shared every week, plus a shirt and a participation medal. Their fall series just ended. Next up is the Turkey Run, which is a standalone event that lasted from Nov. 23-28, followed by their winter race series, which begins on Nov. 30.

Of course, since everything is self-reported, picking winners and distributing prizes works a little bit differently for the virtual races than it does in a traditional race.

istered for the event, we’d do a drawing of everybody that was registered and then hand out some prizes that way,” Vaske said. “The winter series has been less random, more geared towards runners setting goals that they want to accomplish.”

As part of registration for the winter race series, participants fill out a Google Docs form with personal goals for their weight, total miles they’d like to run, number of hours they’d like to train, and times they hope to achieve for 5K and 10K runs. Then, when they meet those goals and report back to the city, they’re entered into a drawing for prizes from there. As in past years, prizes are donated by local businesses. For the Turkey Run, the prizes include three Thanksgiving turkeys

donated by Natural Grocers.

Just how long the city will host virtual races remains to be seen.

“Right now, we’re slated to keep doing these virtuals all the way into February, and then seeing what happens and what the environment’s like—whether we’ll still have to keep to just virtuals, or whether we’ll be able to go back to on-sites and live events and stuff like that too,” Vaske said. “But the virtual race series has definitely created a new area. It’s definitely been interesting seeing the people we’ve been able to reach with it.

Regardless if we go back to live events or not, I can definitely see virtuals still being a big part of our future here.” l

Welby teacher chooses optimism as winter approaches during pandemic school year

“Our PTA rocked it,” she said.

“It was absolutely hilarious, and they loved it; they ate it up. That was a real fun activity they made in spite of the circumstances. And they not only did it well, but the kids were excited about it.”

She also was looking at her annual Thanksgiving feast, where students dressed up as pilgrims and

n mid-November, 13 weeks since the first day of school, after the bright sunny weather turned to bleak cold winds and a surprise snowstorm covered the Salt Lake Valley, Welby Elementary teacher Carolyn Smith had already broken into her stash of disposable masks for schoolchildren who had forgotten theirs and had reminded them to keep out their “zombie arms” and stand on the dots, both designed to keep them socially distanced.

Cold and flu season were approaching; students were transitioning from playing outdoors to using a portable for indoor recess as the gym was being used for lunch, and they couldn’t sit next to their friends at lunchtime as they were spaced far apart while eating unmasked.

Smith, as hundreds of others in the valley, was teaching in-person during the deadly COVID-19 pandemic.

Even with positive test numbers skyrocketing—nearly 4,000 cases on Nov. 12— was Smith happy with her decision to risk her own health to teach third graders?

“Very, very,” she said. “I love kids. And I love to be with my kids. There is an energy that happens when they’re all with you, they’re excited about what you’re doing, and when those ‘a-ha’ moments happen.”

She also likes the personal relationships she builds with her pupils.

Recently one of her students told her he was learning piano so on the day of his lesson, Smith asked if he was excited. The day after, he told her he was learning to play “Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star.” She asked him to send her a video so she could hear him.

“So, he sent me a video of him playing ‘Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star,” and his mom sent me an email saying, ‘Thank you so much for validating him as a person,’” she said.

“My point is that you don’t hear those little comments online. [Teaching in-person] you can just be a part of those little things.”

As of press deadline, Welby reported fewer than six positive cases of COVID-19.

With only a couple of Smith’s students having been quarantined for exposure to people outside the classroom, she just welcomes them with a “we’re happy to have you back.”

However, as all of South Jordan secondary schools went online Nov. 12 until at least the end of the month, would she have wanted to return in-person if she taught those grades?

“I still think I’d prefer in-person, but I have a very elementary personality,” she said.

That’s apparent as she continues to try to connect with her students, bringing a sense of normalcy through creative ways. Even with Gov. Gary Herbert’s Nov. 9 mandate restricted after-school activities for two weeks, Welby and several other schools already curtailed

Smith made sure to have a fun class day on Halloween, a day that many schoolchildren love and some, may have been fearful wouldn’t happen this year.

“Halloween turned out to be great,” she said. “There were strict rules; the kids could wear their costumes; but if they were going to wear it, it needed to be able to be something they could wear all day because specifically they were told that teachers couldn’t help kids on and off with costumes.”

Smith made it a day to celebrate and learn.

“On the way, my husband told me to make it a fun day and be a fun teacher—and they all had a blast as we did some educational Halloween activities, all day,” she said.

Those activities included graphing costumes and their favorite candy, Halloween Kahoot math word problems and creating a catapult from popsicle sticks, rubber bands and spoons and using candy pumpkins to shoot across their desks.

“I said, ‘this is science,’ and one my kids said, ‘no, this is engineering,’” she said, then she asked how he knew that; he replied, “’because I’m going to be an engineer when I grow up,’ and I thought, ‘bless your heart.’

That was one of their favorite things. I just gave them the pieces and they had to discover how to create a catapult. They were having fun; they were learning.”

The school PTA also did a “fun thing” by having teachers, who volunteered, kiss a 500-pound pig as a result of students surpassing the school online fundraiser goal.

Smith gave her a kiss, with bright purple lipstick, on the shoulder so students could see it as it was livestreamed to classrooms and made available to online students.

“We’ll just do it a different way,” she said. “They could sit in their seats dressed up and have the Thanksgiving dinner and they’d get a kick out of that. Anything different, they get a kick out of anything. Even today, instead of sitting at their chairs, they sat on their desk for an activity that tends to be a little boring. But that made it exciting and so much fun. So just tweaking things just a little, but still social distancing and being appropriate, makes it fun.”

Not only is she thinking about her classroom holiday plans but also what her daily curriculum will be like weeks ahead in case a substitute is needed, or if case numbers rise and the school is to transition to online learning, her lessons will be ready.

“In that case, if we go online, I can make that work,” she said, adding that she took a Canvas class over the summer to help her prepare for that possibility. “It’s hard for me.

It’s more complicated than my Google classroom was last spring. I have my Canvas set up and my kids are used to being on it, from day one.”

She also has her students knowing how to access their books online.

“I want them to be able to be independent of me,” she said in case teaching turns virtual. “My class and myself are much more

prepared than I was in the spring.”

While Smith says, “I’m not a tech person,” she learned and held a back-to-school Zoom meeting, which she said she did “so they could see me.” She also was preparing for her first Zoom parent-teacher conferences.

“I think it’s going to be a lot more accessible,” she said. “They can access it from their phone or wherever. I think it’s going to be great.”

Besides learning technology, Smith has appreciated more teacher support from her aides, since she has missed having parent volunteers in the classroom; collaboration of her third-grade team; her school professional development Friday mornings; and from her peers across the Jordan School District, who have shared successes in their classrooms during the pandemic.

“We talk about we’re gearing up for this and what’s going well and what are your challenges,” she said. “It really has been beneficial and helpful to get perspectives from different teachers in other schools. Flexibility is a huge part of teaching, and this year, it’s especially been an important part of our teaching culture. We just have to be flexible as things come up, even as the rules change.

There are teachers with anxiety and are up at night or you can do your best and take it one step at a time and make the best of it.”

What Smith is taking advantage of, during this year’s four-day school week, is Fridays when school isn’t in-session in its regular form.

“I love—and this surprises me—Fridays with kids [I invite] to school for three hours,” she said. “I did not anticipate liking it. I thought three hours would be a long time with small groups or a couple kids. And I was so very wrong.”

Smith first started with Zoom meetings, but then, knowing she was more comfortable in-person, she invited students, at first, for an hour, but then extended it to three hours so she could have more time to help them indepth.

“Half of my class masters things, especially multiplication, and half of my class, struggles,” Smith said. “So, I can have some of them come in and not only can I really hit hard the concepts that they need, I can go over papers that they’ve needed to make corrections on, and I can really have them practice multiplication. I can have them play Kahoot. My class really loves Kahoot, and they’re having so much fun, they don’t realize they’re learning. And they’re the winners when they come in; on Fridays, they have a chance to shine and these kids are begging to come back. Teachers have all different levels come. Some of them do expanding activities with the gifted and talented, but I haven’t gotten there yet. I have surprised myself by loving it as much as I have. That is the silver lining.” l

UDOT ramping up construction on 12600 S/Bangerter intersection

S

outhwest valley motorists have likely noticed the beginning of a new construction project around 12600 South and Bangerter Highway in recent months.

The Utah Department of Transportation project will create a “freeway-style interchange” at the intersection, allowing traffic on Bangerter Highway to continue unabated through 12600 S. It will also improve eastwest traffic flow along 12600 South.

The $55 million project is part of a broader effort by UDOT to upgrade Bangerter Highway by replacing intersections with overpasses and on-and-off ramps. Other intersections that have already undergone the transformation include 5400 South, 7000 South, 9000 South and 11400 South. Those updates have already helped to shave eight minutes off a commute from one end of Ban-

gerter to the other, according to UDOT. In addition to 12600 South, the intersections at 6200 South and 10400 South are also planned to be transformed this year, further cutting commute times for residents of the west side of the valley. Together, the three projects have a price tag of $147 million.

Of course, the long term benefit of creating these new interchanges will come with some short-term headaches due to the construction, which will necessitate a “long-term closure for east-west traffic” through the intersection, according to UDOT. That closure is expected to happen sometime in February.

Meanwhile, construction crews are busy relocating utilities and building up an embankment on the east side of the highway for a future on-and-off ramp. l

Like Mariah Carey, Christmas seems to bring out the best and the worst in people. You have some folks gathering presents, food, and cash for those down on their luck, and then you have people on video surveillance stuffing jars of sweet pickles down their pants at the grocery store.

Christmas is descending like a firebomb on families this year who have been sick, laid off or evicted. Rubbing Mediterranean Sea salt flakes into that wound, Hallmark Christmas movies are back.

Hallmark Christmas movies should come with an eye-roll rating. Two eye-rolls means a small-town doctor falls in love with a handsome (yet grumpy) big-city lawyer. Three eyerolls means a sick puppy was healed through a Christmas miracle involving an enchanted snow globe, a Nebraska blizzard and Angela Lansbury.

Not my cup of tea.

Give me “A Christmas Carol” any day.

With his black-and-white characters and punch-you-in-the-face symbolism, fans of Charles Dickens know his stories are never subtle. But you have to love a Christmas story that starts, “Marley was dead, to begin with.”

The story is about Ebenezer Scrooge and the Christmas Eve where he’s visited by spirits all night. (If I’m going to be visited by three Christmas spirits, they’d better be white wine, tequila, and Champagne. Not egg nog.

That’s the stuff of Christmas demons.)

Scrooge’s partner, Jacob Marley, is a spirit that first shows up as a brass doorknocker (like ya do) and visits Scrooge to give him a heads-up that ghosts will be stopping by to

chat. Marley is awesome. I mean, who doesn’t want to be followed around by a dead business partner who’s wrapped in the ghostly chains of his unkind existence?

Scrooge “Bah humbugs” his way through that discussion before he jumps into his distinctly creepy four-poster bed.

Soon, the Ghost of Christmas Past floats into the room, with its face shining like LED headlights. It shows the Christmas memories that shaped Scrooge through joy and heartbreak, until his soul bent like a candy cane, starting his transition to the irritable Scrooge he is now. Ebenezer is all, “Cool, cool. Can I go back to bed now?”

Then the Ghost of Christmas Present shows up (looking a lot like Jeff Bridges in “The Big Lebowski”) and shows Scrooge what his acquaintances think of him. Sort of like a Victorian version of Twitter.

Scrooge sees the people who think he’s a greedy, grumpy old man (everyone) and although Mr. Christmas Present Ghost is a jolly guy, he opens his robe to show Scrooge two emaciated children, representing Ignorance and Want. (Trump tried to deport them last Christmas.)

Scrooge is apprehensive as he waits for the final spirit, the Ghost of Christmas Future. This is my favorite part of the story. The somber, black specter appears to Scrooge and makes the hair on my knuckles stand up. I love how the spirit only communicates through pointing, like a passive-aggressive teenager.

Scrooge sees his dead body, his headstone, and the callous lack of sympathy from those around him. He wakes up a new man,

ecently, Baby Yoda and her owner, Justin McMullan, the grandson of Welby Elementary’s first principal, Clell McMullan, came to visit the 40-year-old school.

The purpose?

To allow 11 teachers and Principal Aaron Ichimura, who promised if students met their fundraising goal of $15,000, to give her a big kiss.

“The pig was called Baby Yoda, so I was expecting this little piglet,” third grade teacher Carolyn Smith said. “It was huge.”

Surprise!

Welby PTA President Polly Uffens estimated that the 500-pound darling had plenty of places the faculty, wearing bright lipstick, could place their lips—foot, ear, shoulder, back, leg.

“We drew slips of paper where they would kiss the pig,” Uffens said. “The actual pig kissing was streamed into all of the classrooms. I think it was great; they all got a front-row seat!”

In fact, the PTA also was able to post the recorded video to the school website so online students and families could watch it as well. Students at school got to walk by the pig before the event took place.

That wasn’t all.

Ichimura also wore four different wigs during the week, selected by students who brought in the most amount of money in the fundraiser. The wigs, ordered off of Amazon, ranged Welby Elementary fifth-grade teacher Casey Draper was one of 11 teachers who volunteered to kiss a pig as an incentive for students to reach their Continued page 5
